At the meeting of Council held 27 April 2020 it was decided to continue with the current COVID 19 restrictions until 01 Jun 2020 as previously moved. Council will review its position following the National Cabinet meeting in early May dealing with the COVID 19 epidemic when the South Australian Government will likely review its position in line with Cabinet recommendations. DOGS SA Council will convene a further meeting soon after this to determine if or when restrictions can be lifted on our members and activities. Any decisions from this meeting will immediately be disseminated amongst the members via Face Book, the DOGS SA App, the web site and in the Journal. DOGS SA Council is first and foremost considering the Health and Wellbeing of our members and adhering to the advice provided by SA Health and restrictions being placed on us by Government to control the spread of the COVID 19 virus. There have been a number of requests from members and affiliates for financial assistance due to the suspension of activities. At this time DOGS SA cannot provide a response to these requests as there are too many unknowns for DOGS SA. Any assistance which may be provided will come after the current situation has been resolved and the full extent of the financial or other burdens have been identified on the Association. Council will revisit this matter once more is known and where possible will provide that assistance where it is deemed appropriate. We understand these are trying times so please ensure that we care for one another. Our dog family has always shone in times of adversity and this is just another of those times. AGILITY NEWS These are certainly trying times for the agility community with no competitions or even training at the clubs, and currently no resumption date apparent. However it is great to see people becoming involved in online agility pages and sharing ideas for keeping their dogs fit and engaged during social isolation. Finding enjoyable ways to remain active and to keep building skills is a creative challenge for these times! Appointment of inspectors PART XVI INSPECTION OF MEMBERS PROPERTY As prescribed in the Constitution of the Association, Council may appoint a person/s to complete an inspection on a members property to ensure the keeping and welfare of the dogs are maintained to the minimum standards as prescribed by DOGS SA and South Australian Government Legislation. Council is seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ from eligible members interested in being approved by Council to carry out inspection of members property in accordance with the above rule. ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Be a Full Ordinary Member of the South Australian Canine Association Inc. (SACA) (or equivalent). 2. Been a financial member of the SACA for a minimum period of (5) years. 3. Experience in any aspect of the Associations activities which includes the breeding of pedigree dogs or any other recognised discipline. 4. Experience in animal welfare/husbandry in relation to dogs. e.g. significant experience in breeding dogs, kennel management, animal control officer, veterinary nurse or relevant education/training in animal welfare. 5. Knowledge and understanding of the Constitution, Rules and Code of Ethics of the South Australian Canine Association Inc. 6. Knowledge of relevant legislation impacting on the welfare and keeping of Domestic Animals. 7. Not been found guilty of any breach or offence with respect to the Constitution, Rules and Code of Ethics of the South Australian Canine Association Inc and/or relevant State or Local government legislation. 8. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1.

I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.

I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)

I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.

I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.

The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime. (01/20) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/ sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20)

I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.

I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)

I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)

10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. 11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. ANKC Health & Wellbeing Committee COVID 19 advice to breeders Realising that bitches were mated or whelped prior to the introduction of travel and social distancing restrictions, the CHWC hopes that the following advice will help in the process of transferring puppies to their new owners. In addition the ANKC has received many inquiries in regard to continuation of breeding during this time of Government limitations, this of course is a personal choice but the ANKC recommends that before you mate a bitch, you give serious consideration to difficulties that may be encountered in relocating puppies to their new homes, transporting puppies both inter and intrastate can be a problem as are limited flights between states.

COVID 19 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the basics COVID 19 is one of a large group of Corona viruses that affect many species. These viruses, like most, are generally species specific and rarely transfer to or affect any other species. Both dogs and cats have corona viruses, but these are genetically very far removed from COVID 19. There has been no recorded transfer of dog and cat Corona viruses to humans and vice versa.

Socialising during the COVID 19 pandemic Because of the limited movement and social distancing of people during the COVID 19 lockdown, breeders will have to be more inventive with their puppy socialisation, particularly if there are no children around. Lots of play activity, try having different outfits, hats, noises, toys; most of which are usually done anyway. Take a few puppies out at a time in a trolley or pram to walk around the park or the block to see different places, people running past etc. Do more one on one handling, particularly in those breeds that really need the individualisation (GSD, Rottweiler, etc). Stress to new owners that they will need to keep up this socialisation after they leave your care.

Placing a Puppy during COVID 19 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Safety Advice 1.

Do most of your normal checks, talking to prospective owners by phone, email, Facebook etc, ahead of time. Send photos, videos of the puppies, how they are being kept and raised, shots of the parents etc.

Check the credentials of the new owners, safe yards and fencing, members of the family, young children etc. Give copies of the relevant health certificates to people you expect to take a puppy. Have your puppy pack ready with dietary advice, spare puppy food, vaccination certificates etc, all ready to go before people arrive to see the puppy (or puppies).

Explain to prospective owners ahead of time what to expect. Ask whether anyone has had contact with anyone with COVID 19 or whether they have a cold or flu. Ask that older and/or compromised people and young children do not come to view the puppies. Only allow 1-2 people to come at any one time. Have everyone use a hand sanitizer or soap and water before handling the puppies.

Put the puppies to be viewed in a playpen, preferably outside, where the puppies can be placed into before the people arrive. Limit the number of puppies brought out. Prospective owners can then handle the puppies without direct contact with you. Any puppies not going can be wiped over with disinfectant (or washed) after the other puppy has gone.

Have all the paperwork ready, if anything needs signing, use a pen that they can then keep or you wipe it down with disinfectant/hand sanitizer. Keep the time spent with prospective owners to a minimum. Wash your hands and all open surfaces around the puppy area after the people leave.

With the restrictions on travel and only for essential business, it becomes quite difficult to sell puppies and comply with the necessary requirements. All the advice that we can give is how to limit your exposure to the virus when people come to view puppies. Starting a new Retrieving Puppy by Joe Law

hether you have trained dogs before or you are relatively new to this venture every fresh start with a puppy will be a somewhat different experience. Previous experiences certainly add to both your knowledge and skill base but because every puppy comes as a unique individual every new start is going to provide more experience with new opportunities and challenges. Training programs do vary and truly experienced trainers know that what worked in one training environment involving one set of personalities will not necessarily produce the same outcomes in another. Flexibility in approach to training is one of the hallmarks of truly experienced trainers. Flexibility however, should not be confused with inconsistency. Flexibility requires an ability to empathise with your dog, having considerable patience and perseverance along with the ability to initiate new ways of simplifying the learning process for your dog. Inconsistency, on the other hand, is more likely to be recognised and associated with a lack of the above qualities and resulting in situations where the dog is unable to understand what is being asked of it in order to be correct. Inconsistency leads to confusion, uncertainty and ultimately the lack of trust between dog and handler. The first six months of a puppyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life is a period of rapid growth and development during which he must learn to cope in the environments that are about to surround his future life. From the time you take delivery of your new pup his education will begin and you will play an integral Page 8

part in his development. While this period is not generally considered to be a time for formal retriever training much needs to be done to condition your dog for his future role in life. Through play and pleasant experiences with you he will learn to cope in a number of different environments. Combined with good nutrition, rest and quiet time he will also learn to meet and greet strangers of both human and animal kind. He must learn to accept being confined in a crate and being restrained by collar and lead. He will have a short concentration span and tire easily so training will be carried out in short sessions. It is important to find time and expose him to those environmental situations that involve noises, crowds, travel, stairs and ramps. He will need to be introduced to different terrains that involve various forms of cover and water. Your pup can learn and should be taught to come when called and this can easily be introduced by using food and praise as a reward. In the same way simple obedience commands of sit, stay and heeling can be introduced at an early age. His natural drive to retrieve can then be awakened with some playful fetch games but these should be carefully managed so that bad habits of breaking, whining and barking along with failure to return and deliver to hand are not inadvertently developed. Formal structured retriever training is best introduced after the pup has reached six months of age and will be best left as subjects of future articles. ADSS raffle proceeds donated to Gumeracha CFS for a new siren

In December 2019, with the Adelaide Hills alight with bushfires, ADSS heard about the plight of the Gumeracha Country Fire Service, with regard to their siren. Their siren was dated circa 1914, and had finally past its use by date, and was not working. This posed a real threat to the surrounding area, as it is in the country and residents rely on this siren to alert them. The area was already under threat from the Chandlers Hill Fire that was ravishing the local countryside, and was not under control. With this in mind, ADSS decided to conduct a raffle to raise funds towards a replacement siren for GCFS. The raffle was conducted over our 31st Jan – 2nd Feb weekend of shows, and was extremely well supported by exhibitors for this most worthy cause. Most notably, Heather Budd, who very generously donated the puppy play gym for the first prize in the raffle.

The raffle raised $600.00 which far outstripped our expectations, but showed the support that our canine community has for, not only our members who lived in this area, but also for our dedicated band of volunteer Fire Fighters. The raffle was drawn, by Heather during our shows on Sunday 2nd February, and the very lucky winner was John Lewington. The humour to this win is that John had come down that day, specifically to meet up with a friend. As the Bar area (an area well supported by John) was not open that weekend, John had come to the Marsula rooms to wait. He was a bit thirsty, so I offered him a beverage, which came with a price tag, of course, and that was that he had to pay for his beverage in tickets in the raffle …… I do not think that John has ever paid $10.00 for a beer ever before, or maybe ever again ….. On the 11th February, it was my extreme pleasure to take the drive to Gumeracha, to present the CFS with the cash from the raffle. They were extremely grateful for the donation towards their siren, and said that the funds were 1/3 of the funds needed to replace it. But that they had other fundraising events organised to try and raise the rest. It was saddening to learn that they were not eligible for any government funding for this siren, and had to raise all the funds themselves to replace it. ADSS were very pleased to receive, in the post, a week later a lovely certificate of appreciation from the Gumeracha CFS, presented via us, to the entire South Australian Canine Community, for their generous donation. ADSS have framed this certificate, and have donated it to Dogs SA, to hopefully, hang in the Marsula Rooms, so that we have a constant reminder, of the good that we, as a group can do, to help our community when its in need. Retrieving news Our retrieving season is on hold at the moment, of course, due to the pandemic. Hopefully we’ll get in some trials this year before the end of the season, which is all too short at any time, as it is restricted mainly by our weather conditions in this State. We have the Championships and other trials in the month of August ready to go, should they be allowed. RAFTCOSA will be having trials on the week-end of 1st and 2nd August as an extra if restrictions are lifted by then. Hopefully the people who came to the Come ‘n Try in March are practising their retrieving - at least it gives you something to do at home in this period of social distancing and stay at home requirements and helps prevent boredom both in handlers and dogs. I know the die-hards of the retrieving world aren’t just sitting back and not doing any training just because they’re stuck at home; dogs are still being trained and kept super fit. Some of the Common Questions of Social Gatherings Can I meet with more than two people? Although it is strongly discouraged, you are able to meet with more than two people at a time, as long as you use social distancing of 1.5 metres and it is not more than 10 people.

What if my house has more than two people, can we still meet? Yes, you are able to meet with everyone in your household. However, social distancing and good hygiene is encouraged.

Can I have a family picnic at my local park? Yes, provided that the number of people gathering does not exceed 10 people and the social distancing principles of 1.5 metres applies. Limiting the number of people gathering to two is strongly encouraged.
