President’s Report Welcome all members to my Presidents Report for the April Journal. What a month March has been with the requirement to hold a second AGM as we could not complete the first, and then the resignation of our recently appointed Executive Officer. Along with many others I was disappointed to see her leave but we have to accept her resignation and move on. Her reasons for leaving were her own and she felt it was better to leave during the probationary period rather than extending it on. There have been many rumours as to her reasons for leaving with the largest being Bullying and Harassment. It would be inappropriate for me to comment on these rumours but to simply clarify what Workplace bullying is as defined on the Safe Work Australia Website. Listed below is the extract: Workplace bullying is repeated and unreasonable behaviour directed towards a worker or group of workers that creates a risk to health and safety. It is a risk to health and safety because it may affect the mental and physical health of workers. Taking steps to prevent it from occurring and responding quickly if it does is the best way to deal with workplace bullying. Bullying can take different forms including psychological, physical or even indirect—for example deliberately excluding someone from work-related activities. It can be obvious and it can be subtle, which means it’s not always easy to spot. Some examples of workplace bullying include:

§ § § § §

abusive or offensive language or comments aggressive and intimidating behaviour belittling or humiliating comments practical jokes or initiation unjustified criticism or complaints.

When at an event or conducting business with Dogs SA you and everyone else is considered a worker so please act respectfully to each other, this is a hobby and meant to be fun and a place to catch up with friends. Bullying is not acceptable and neither is unfounded accusations which are just as damaging. Also, to confirm that a number of major events are still continuing during 2021 unless COVID changes things and these are the Winter Festival (June), Adelaide Royal Show (September) and Festival of Dogs (October). I would expect these events to be well supported in 2021 as all three had to be cancelled 2020. I hope you all have a good Easter and spend time with both your dogs and families and spend the time to reflect and think about how we as an organization can more forward into the year. Puppy of The Year competition, Winter International and the inaugural Festival of Dogs. Although the events were not held its important to acknowledge thecontributions by all volunteer members of the Committees, who dedicated time and energy into planning these events that were unfortunately cancelled. We recognise that this would have been very disappointing for all involved. So, let us hope 2021 sees a return to events, albeit in slightly modified formats. Marketing Dogs SA became a key focus towards the end of the year, with the Dogs SA Public Facebook page being reactivated with new content (post reaching on average 2,500) and the logo being reformatted with brand guideline, that have provided a suite of tools for future marketing activities. Furthermore, the first Direct Mail went out to Members in December with a 56% open rate. Several changes were introduced later in the year to the administration including a centralised records management system; in the interest of reducing paper wastage and ensuring essential documents are protected. HR practices were revisited including Job Descriptions. Compliance remains top of mind with work being done in this space through the introduction of Policies and Procedures and the revisiting of the terms of reference for Advisory Committees. It is recognised that much more time needs to be spend over the next 12 months ensuring Dogs SA is, and remains compliant. It is important to acknowledge the efforts of many of our volunteers and workers including the SACA Reps, Judges, Stewards, and the canteen manager who all work tirelessly for the Association. Although a commission is provided to clubs that undertake the catering, without them and some loyal helpers we would not be able to run the canteen or BBQ which made a profit (despite reduction in Shows) of $8,739 as part of the Hospitality Centre (including Bar). Furthermore $9,230 was redirected back to clubs as Commissions. In addition, a profit of $67,117 was achieved in 2020 by Dogs SA, despite the significant reduction in sales and income. The impact of Covid-19 affected the results of the Association due to a major decline in Levies from Shows and Hire Income $56,587 (2019 $137,162), $33,912 (2019 $62,081) respectively. In addition, due to the cancellation of Exhibitions, fees to the sum of $24,520 were refunded to Clubs. Fortunately, the Government JobKeeper Subsidy of $93,600 ensured a profit for the Association. In 2020 Dogs SA underwent significant change with the retirement of Wolfgang Schnitzer in July. Wolfgang commenced at Dogs SA in 1991 and assumed the role as Executive Officer in 1992, providing 28 years of service to the Association. Following his retirement Cheryl Currie acted in the role, that was later filled by Roz Becker in October. LOOKING FORWARD: We look forward to lots of positive and fun changes in 2021, with the appointment of a new Executive Officer and the addition of two new councillors. We will provide greater transparency and better communications. This change has already begun with regular direct mails being circulated to members and the new website under construction. Other changes being implemented are the introduction of online bookings which will see us “Activating the Park”, a special member lounge and library is on the Agenda, workshops for members and New Member Mentoring Programs. Dogs SA has so much to offer to all dog owners and we look forward to members supporting these new initiatives that will see more joining and staying with Dogs SA for years to come. Let us ensure Dog Showing and Sports are FUN FOR EVERYONE and that we are recognised as a “Dog Friendly” facility. April 2021

Stories around the campfire with All Breeds Dog Judge, John Lewington Winter 1994 Fort Collins I was judging in Colorado again and decided to stay on for a week or so after the show I stayed with friends Scott and Cindy and their Wolfhound Liam. They took me to meet their fiend Corky who worked in the Golden Police Department and I was given a tour and shown how their 911 operation worked. May come in very handy if I want to evade capture in the future. The next day they had arranged to take me on the tour of the Budweizer plant in Fort Colins. They asked me if I would mind if they picked up their friend Cathy on the way. Cathy was in her early twenty’s and suffered from cerebral palsy and didn’t get to go out much. We joined the tour party of about twelve and I noticed Cathy, who was a lovely bubbly young girl, was having trouble walking and I thought there may a problem if the tour was a long one. The tour guide told me it would take about two hours so I asked if they had a wheelchair available. We soon had Cathy seated comfortably in the wheelchair and I offered to push her round the brewery. There was a problem, I am not used to steering wheelchairs and promptly ran over the tour guides foot, from then on everyone kept well away from the crazy bloke from Australia. At the end of the tour we came to a long function room about thirty metres from end to end. The guide explained this was the end of the tour but if we made our way down to the long bar at the end of the room we could sample three different types of beer. As the rest of the party started to make their way towards the bar, I told Cathy to get out of the wheelchair and told her I have pushed you round for two hours now its your turn to push me to the bar. I sat in the wheelchair and the fun began poor Cathy could not walk in a straight line and was bumping into the tables and chairs as she was pushing me. The rest of the people on the tour party looked horrified but Cathy was having the time of her life giggling and laughing, We made it to the bar and by then people started to see the funny side of it and stood and clapped Cathy as she got there. I had a fun day Cathy had a fun day. So it is nice to know you can bring a bit of joy to people’s lives on the odd occasion.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WARM-UPS AND COOL-DOWNS FOR AGILITY Insights from Marie and Pippa Our dogs are athletes! Whilst we might think we are too, it’s our dogs that are the true athletes. Think about it…. In a full day’s competition, we might compete in up to 4-8 events. Depending on what class you are in, your dog could be jumping between 60-100 obstacles, based on 4 events. That’s massive in anyone’s language. Hence the importance of a warm-up and cool-down. Grabbing your dog from his/her crate and standing by the trial ring waiting to go in, just doesn’t cut it for our wonderful canine friends. Imagine if we had to run a 200m hurdle event with no warm-up! We probably wouldn’t do very well. Try to fit in 10-15 minutes of warm-up, if possible. If you are first on or near the top of the order, you can always warm-up before walking the course, as that warm-up will last 20 minutes. A warm-up can be simple really, consisting of: 1. Straight line trotting on lead. 2. Body awareness and stretching. 3. 1-2 jump exercises. Points 1 and 3 are fairly self-explanatory. For point 2 it might be as simple as paws up and stretch, back leg stretches, sidestepping, bows to stretch out the spine, head to the side to flex the neck. The added advantages of a warm-up and cool down are: 1. Increases the body and muscle temperature. 2. Increases flexibility. 3. Engages the dog mentally. 4. Creates a connection between you and your dog. These exercises I have learnt with the help of personal tuition and an online course. Then you should be ready to have fun!!

It is just as important when you have completed your course to make sure that you give your dog your full attention and do a cool-down. A gentle walk with your dog for 5-10 minutes. I normally look at their gait to make sure that it is even and there aren’t any underlying problems. Also make sure that they are well hydrated, and a treat for a job well done. Although there’s been debate about whether warming up and cooling down can prevent injuries, proper warmups and cooldowns pose little risk. Plus, they seem to give your heart and blood vessels a chance to ease into — and out of — an exercise session. So, if you have the time, consider including a warmup and cool-down in your workout routine. If you’d like more specific information, check out the professional guidance provided by K9 Dynamics that follows. Marie Warming with Tookurra Seaside Serenade; Photo: Shadow Farm Photography

WARM UP Correctly warming up your dog is easy and can help reduce the risk and severity of injury. It should be done approximately 10-15 minutes prior to your run or commencement of your training session and only takes about 10 minutes. An example of a warm up/cool down modified from “The Agility Advantage - Health and Fitness for the Canine Athlete” (Chris Zink DVM, PhD) and “Warm up & cool down of the canine athlete –an evidence-based approach to improving performance” (Caroline McIntyre, PT) is shown below: BODY RUB – Rub every part of your dog’s body from head to tail to awaken the muscles and increase blood circulation (NOT deep massage on specific muscles). Gently rub over the major muscles. April 2021

WARM UP ROUTINE - This routine is aimed at general and specific muscle groups which are utilised by our dogs to effectively complete an agility course or training session e.g. spine, hamstrings, gluteals, shoulders, hips adductors, lateral and core. TROTTING – 2-5 MINUTES -whole body warm up of large muscle groups and to stimulate the cardiovascular system - increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to the muscles. • Trot/ jog with your dog in large circles, in a clockwise and anticlockwise direction • Do some shadow handling - changing direction, heeling on left and right side include front crosses and pivots. Page 17

WRAP AN OBJECT – 2 REPS TO LEFT AND RIGHT Send your dog to wrap around an object e.g. jump wing or cone, this exercise will engage the core and stretches the spine. Ensure you practice both directions. TUGGING – 1 MINUTE Play tug with your dog to actively stretch your dog’s forelimbs, spine, adductors and hamstrings. Have fun and get their focus on you. Ensure that when you are tugging the dogs head is low and you do not pull your dog’s head from side to side, rather encourage the dog to pull backwards. SPIN – 2 REPS TO LEFT AND RIGHT OR FIGURE 8’s BETWEEN YOUR LEGS – 2 REPS For the spin exercise, have your dog on your left side and then lure your dog in a tight 360-degree circle to the left (away from you - anticlockwise) and then repeat by luring to the right (towards you - in a clockwise direction). For the Figure 8 exercise have your dog in the heal position on your left and stand with your legs apart. Use your hand or a treat, to lure your dog between your legs and then wrap around and back to heal. Both of these exercises should be performed in a controlled manner and will stretch the spine, neck, tail and fascia over the ribs. BACKWARDS WALKING OR BACK UP TO TARGET – 5 REPS Cue your dog to “Back up” to a target e.g. mat, to stretch hamstring and glutes. Ensure they step back approximately 5-8 steps and do not hop backwards; it must be a deliberate step. Having a target for your dog to back up to, can help with keeping them straight. COUNTERLEVER STAND TO DOWN– 5 REPS From a balanced standing position lure your dog into a down position with food, ensuring the dog does not move its front paws. Reward and then ask for a stand. This exercise stretches numerous muscle groups including hips, shoulders, stifles, elbows and wrists.

COOL DOWN After your run, it is important to take time (approximately 5 to 10 minutes) to perform some cool down exercises with your dog, it allows your dog to mentally and physically calm down and relax. An effective cool down routine can help to restore shortened muscles back to their original length, maintain good blood circulation to assist the removal of lactic acid and toxins and prevent muscle stiffness. COOL DOWN ROUTINE: WALK – 2-3 MINUTES Go for a walk around the grounds, telling your dog how good they have been! PLAYBOW – 5 REPS In a stand position, move a treat towards your dog and downwards between their front legs to encourage them into the bow. The dog’s elbows should be touching the ground, with back and knees in extension this exercise stretches the triceps, back, hips and hamstrings. SUPERMAN – 5 REPS Target your dog’s front feet onto a stool or chair. Encourage them to stretch up using a treat and hold for 5 seconds. Ensure your dog’s head and back are straight. This will stretch your dog’s hip flexors, hip and back. SPINAL STRETCHES – 5 REPS These exercises will stretch your dog’s cervical, thoracic and lumbar/sacral spine. Stretches to be performed on both left and right sides and held for approx. 5 seconds. • Lure and Treat to shoulder- hold for 5 seconds • Lure and Treat to hip- hold for 5 seconds • Lure and Treat Knee (stifle)- hold for 5 seconds • Look Up and Treat-hold for 5 seconds • Look Down and Treat- hold for 5 seconds RELAX - Sit down and relax with your dog with some wellearned pats!!

TUCK SIT TO KICK BACK STAND – 5 REPS Tuck Sit to Stand requires your dog to move their hind quarters in towards their front feet into a balanced tight sit which requires your dog to engage their core and hip flexors. It may be easier to get your dog to target their front feet onto a small mat when attempting this exercise. HIGH FIVE – 5 REPS Have your dog in a sit position and cue a paw or handshake. Eventually try to encourage your dog to raise their paw individually and hold without the support of your hand. This is a great exercise to warm up the shoulder muscles. JUMPS – 5 REPS Practice jumps e.g. back side, slice, wrap jump exercises Page 18

AGILITY NEWS

The trialling year is up and going! It’s terrific to once again be out having fun, competing with our wonderful dogs. And it’s good to see everyone being respectful of Covid conditions – thank you.

In addition to the regular tasks associated in supporting Clubs with trials (e.g. timing gear), measuring dogs (15 were measured on the 20th Feb at ADCSA!), facilitating preparation of DogsSA journal articles, addressing queries and incidents that arise across the month, and ongoing work to streamline AAC functions, here are some key updates from your Agility Advisory Committee: • 2021 State Agility Championships: Yes, they are on! And fingers crossed Covid stays away. See the Schedule for details elsewhere in this edition, and on the DogsSA website and Agility SA Facebook page. Sadly we have deferred our NZ judge until next year (a Covid risk casualty) but we have two exciting interstate judges coming. And we have a Juniors Event and a Teams Event, and more. Check it out! It’s going to be fun.

We are arranging the Champs in a very short timeframe so please be patient. We are also seeking volunteers for stewarding, in helping to set

rings up on Friday 11th June, in managing registration including Covid compliance, etc; contact Kerry! • Agility Rules: Successful meetings have been held with Judges and Competitors to discuss the 2021 ANKC Agility Rules and SA’s Not for Competition (NFC) Guidelines. Vanessa Loughlin has been instrumental in drafting Guidelines for NFC and importantly, to support introduction of the new Agility Rules – which are particularly intended to build safety and consistency in course design and judging associated with the new Elite class. Both documents are currently being modified based on feedback from meetings. The Judges Panel in liaison with the AAC is considering options by which to best support judges and clubs in introducing the Elite class. • Equipment Grants for Clubs: Grants up to $1500 per Club have been approved for the purchase of new equipment and materials and updating of existing agility equipment. It will cover incidental costs such as transport or labour costs. To be eligible, Clubs must be providing regular agility training and conducting trials. Clubs will be reimbursed on submission of receipts by 31st December 2021.
