President’s Report

President’s Report

As we push on into 2021 things do seem to be getting back to some form of normality or are we are just getting accustomed to the abnormal, you be the judge of that. Many of our activities are starting to get themselves together again thanks to the hardworking volunteers who are needed to conduct these events. If you are new or old to the dog world and would like to get involved with a club do not hold back, all clubs regardless of the discipline are always looking for eager volunteers to assist them. Most will be aware of the media attention lately in relation to the cost of puppies due to COVID. Although the attention is primarily against Designer breeds Dogs SA breeders are being caught up in the hype. I have recently conducted a number of interviews with both print and radio media to explain the difference between buying a registered ANKC pedigree dog and that from a BYB. This can be a hard message to sell when we still have some of our own breeders not doing the right thing when dealing with the public. Remember always respond to the requests either print, telephone or text this is just being courteous. Explain to them the benefits of buying from an ANKC registered breeder such as the follow up support they can get, membership to Dogs SA, the different activities we conduct and most importantly the health benefits of the puppy and parents. We keep saying we are a cut above the rest, well let’s all make sure we act like it and treat the public and everyone else with the dignity and respect which we ourselves expect. 2021 has also brought with it some of the bad traits of the dog world with bullying and harassment again on the rise as we get back into our activities. This was most obvious with Face Book posts about a junior who was by no uncertain terms bullied and harassed to a point where she was physically upset. This behavior is not acceptable anywhere and particularly where the young and elderly are involved. These latest incidents have made Dogs SA bring forward the implementation of policies on Bullying and Harassment, Child and Member Protection and Social Media. These policies will be enforceable and will bring with them hefty penalties. A couple of reminders, the first being the Council election closes on 10 February 2021 for the Vice President and 4 Councilors. If you do not vote do not complain about who is representing you. Next is the Annual General Meeting of Dogs SA to be held 03 March 2021 at 8PM at David Roche Park. There are a number of constitutional changes that members should be interested in. A final reminder that we are in the middle of summer and as we have already seen the weather is hot in Adelaide and around the state so make sure you look after yourselves, your dogs and those around you. Not too difficult to ring a friend and ask RUOK. Brian Parker President DOGS SA Mob: 0417 724 223 Page Page 3 3

AGILITY ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2020

2020 was a very different year, particularly impacted by the Covid pandemic. Clubs went into hibernation, and trials stopped for some months. Handlers and their dogs had to find alternative ways to continue developing skills and maintain fitness! And then adjust to Covid-safe arrangements when trials resumed2. AAC monthly meetings were initially in abeyance but recommenced using Zoom. Two members took leave for three months for personal reasons. There was only one Judges Panel meeting held (specifically to review agility rules) and no trainee judges took up training this year. Nevertheless, the AAC continued to progress some significant work. Regular tasks continued as and when appropriate. These included arranging for the measuring of dogs, and it is exciting to note an increase in novice level entries when trials recommenced. Other tasks included maintenance and provision of timing devices to trials. Address of incident reports and consideration of safety issues are ongoing agenda items, as has been discussion on ways to support clubs. Covid-safety plans were reviewed and supported. Other activities included: Selection of the State Team to represent SA in the National Agility Championships in Perth – cancelled due to Covid. Chloe Dunlop has initiated a process to form an interstate working group to explore the potential of having agility endorsed as a formally recognised sport, thereby eligible to attract different sources of funding. Options to provide Clubs with standardised measuring equipment being investigated. State Championships: When it seemed that the state champs would be abandoned due to scheduling and Covid challenges, the AAC accepted a terrific offer from the Riverland Club to integrate the championships with their August Trial. While sadly the championships were cancelled due to the pandemic, this afforded a unique format and work in developing this may yet bring benefits in the future. Work has commenced in planning for the 2021 Championships. Survey of agility members’ and club challenges and opportunities: In support of strategic planning initiatives, an online survey was conducted mid-year. While there were some limitations in the survey’s implementation it nevertheless generated some very valuable findings and substantially confirmed informal feedback from members of the agility community. A summary of the survey findings is published in the December issue of the DogsSA Journal. Further surveys and workshops are envisaged to help elicit a wider number views and innovative ways to address needs. Findings will continue to inform the AAC’s efforts to strengthen management and development of the sport. Agility database: A key AAC responsibility in liaison with the DogsSA office is the maintenance of the agility records database. Under the stewardship of Roz Short, a significant overhaul of the system was undertaken earlier this year. This was a massive effort that will improve the reliability and accuracy of records and annual awards. This process revealed a need to review criteria pertaining to the calculation of awards and a need to upgrade the database system – work for 2021. The annual agility awards were cancelled this year. Terms of Reference to guide AAC functioning: Following a review of the current generic DogsSA Page 10

Rules regarding the role and function of advisory committees, and research into interstate Agility TORs, an updated, agilityspecific TORs document was prepared. It necessarily needed to blend some existing DogsSA requirements with new roles and functions that better reflect the nature of agility management in 2020. It is intended that this document be made readily available to all members, will promote accountability and encourage people to join the committee in the future. The new TORs document was endorsed by Council in October as an exemplar for all DogsSA advisory committees. As a key governance document it does however require further development and updating, and the AAC looks forward to working with the EO and Council to make amendments in 2021. Committee member nomination process, and member participation in AGM: Written nomination forms incorporating a brief description of what a nominee would bring to the AAC were prepared along with a notification and submission process prior to the AGM. This draft material was shared with DogsSA administration but requires further development as it is bound up with DogsSA Rules. The AAC drafts will provide a basis for an improved process which can hopefully be implemented in 2021. Queries were also made regarding the process and criteria by which Council appoints the chairpersons of advisory committees; it is hoped that a more transparent, participatory process can be developed, reflective of the membership-based organisation that DogsSA is. In the interests of promoting access and inclusion (particularly for country members), the AAC also sought to have participation and voting at the AGM via Zoom. While Zoom participation was enabled, work is required to provide for proxy or zoom voting in the future. Communication with the retiring and newly appointed Executive Officers, President and Council members to address various matters of governance and related processes. Opportunities exist to continue to strengthening these, and the AAC is keen to work with both DogsSA management and the agility community in doing so. Similarly, the committee has utilised social media and the journal to share some key information with the community and elicit views and engagement in proposed events, but a lot more can be done with this. The new EO has expressed a desire to build stronger, more engaging and transparent communication mechanisms, and we’re excited by these initiatives. Festival of Dogs: Jace Shultz lead agility input in the organisation of this fabulous event, and garnered contributions and support from across the agility community. Massive thanks to all who had been helping and were lined up to participate. It was super exciting to see how much interest had been stimulated in this event. Another casualty of Covid, but look out 2021 - it’ll be back! A big thank you to Jo Shirlock who is not re-nominating for the AAC – her compassion, commitment and contribution to agility, including the AAC, has been enormous, and we especially acknowledge her lead work this year on the TORs. Nadege Wauchope (secretary), Jason Shultz (communications), Roz Short (database/records), Chloe Dunlop and Kerry Thomas intend to renominate. Peter Dynan (chairperson) is also acknowledged. Thanks are also extended to the DogsSA admin staff, without whom we couldn’t operate – as a committee and as a sport; your timely assistance has been much appreciated. This year committee members have also valued having positive

engagement with the incoming Executive Officer and members of Council – this augers well for ongoing development of agility into the coming year. Finally, a massive thank you to the Clubs and the agility community for “hanging in there” and continuing to find ways to engage in this wonderful sport of ours – here’s to Agility, and 2021! Notes 1. This summary report was prepared by the AAC 2020 Committee Members to communicate the range of work undertaken by the committee in support of agility during the year and to supplement the limited report provided by the Chairperson at the AGM on 9th Nov. Provision of an Annual Report is an advisory committee task under current DogsSA Rules. 2. See agility competitor Nerissa Haby’s article in December DogsSA Journal.

RAFT ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2020

Firstly, I’d like to thank my fellow advisory committee members for their hard work throughout this very challenging year. What looked like to be an exciting Year ahead with plans well underway for the running of the National Retrieving Trial in August, the start of our Season was less than a month away when DOGS SA announced all events were to be cancelled due to the Covid 19 pandemic until 1st June. Unfortunately, the cancelation of events meant that our early season RATG’s held by RAFTCOSA, the Gundog and Labrador Clubs were cancelled. Several clubs tried in vain to reschedule the early season Retrieving Trials that were cancelled until later in the year, however due to circumstances beyond their control the Labrador Retriever Club Retrieving Sub Committee, The Golden Retriever Club, Gundog Club and GSP Clubs were unable to reschedule their trials. RAFTCOSA were fortunate when approval to recommence Trials was granted just in time for the Meningie Cup Trial to go ahead in early July. In addition to this they were able to organise back to back trials to finish the very short season at Loveday in the Riverland area of South Australia. The National organising Committee were holding out hope that the Borders would be open in time for the National Retrieving Championships to go ahead in August, despite earlier indications they could remain in place until at least Late August. However, the National RAFT Advisory voted in June to Cancel the Event. This was a devastating blow to our Organising committee who had been working tirelessly to bring everything together. A big Thank you in particular to Ray, Jessie, Lynne, Jeff and Graeme. The Advisory Committee were determined to run our State Championships, With the constant changing of Border restrictions it became apparent that we would not get the required number of Eligible entries for the event to go ahead as a State Championship. Permission was sought by the Trial secretary to hold the event as 2 All Age stakes with local Judges. The event went ahead with the Minimum number of entries on both days. Several Judges training days were scheduled, a Theory day was well attended before the restriction on gatherings came in to effect and a Practical training day has been postponed until early next year. We urge all Judges to attend the Training Days. Aspiring Judge Julie Kradolfer had limited mentoring opportunities this year, however with the help of several All February 2021

Age/Championship level Judges, Julie was able to fulfill the requirements of the Judges training program to successfully gain her Novice Retrieving Judges Licence. Congratulations Julie, we look forward to seeing you in action next year. Sadly, Tor Bakkeland has decided to hang up his Judges Hat. We wish him well and Thank him for his contribution to the sport over the years. There was an incident during the year when a Competitor went to apply for a Title with Dogs SA. They were told that their dog had not been transferred into their name meaning all achievements up to the date of Transfer were void. When acquiring a New Dog, please make sure you enter the Dog with the correct owners’ details so this does not happen to you. Jessie has been busy writing Articles throughout the year which have been published in the Dogs SA Journal. I hope everyone has enjoyed reading these articles, I know I have. We have been very fortunate in South Australia to be able to do some Competing this year, whilst some of our Interstate counter parts have had all of their trials cancelled until the End of December. Our thoughts are with you all and we hope that 2021 brings better Trialling opportunities for all of us. Lastly, I’d like to Thank Dogs SA for offering me the Position of RAFT Advisory Chair person for 2021. With several people stepping down, I look forward to working with the new Panel. Wishing you all the best for the summer months, please stay safe. I look forward to seeing you all next year. Regards Lynette Lennell Chairperson SA RAFT Advisory Panel

TRACKING ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2020

2020 has been an interesting year to say the least. Covid-19 reared its ugly head and all Advisory events and face to face meetings went on hold. The TDC of SA Inc., Committee was forced to cancel tracking trials at Monarto on a rolling basis throughout the year as the uncertainty continued. This also included the first Track and Search trial scheduled for April. The year improved and we developed a Covid-Safe plan as per regulations. A Tracking training day for those new to tracking was conducted at Dogs SA by the TDC of SA Inc.. It was well attended and provided at no cost. DogsSA allowed the use of DRP at no cost to the Club. In September the second of thier planned Track and Search Trials was able to go ahead with Covid-Safe precautions in place and a total of 27 tracks were run. Three other Track and Search trials were able to be run, one by the Tracking Advisory was initially deferred and then run (26 tracks) and two by the Rottweiler Club of SA Inc, (52 tracks in total). In total this resulted in 34 titles being completed this year (14 TSD, 12 TSDX, 6 TS Ch and 2 TS Grand Champion). Dogs and handlers gaining their Grand Champion Titles were Neut CH / TRIPLE CH (T) (TS) TS Grand CH Blakesims Stop Me CD RA "Axyle" a Rottweiler - Owner handler Narelle Medlicott and T Ch TS Grand Ch Misty CD RAE ADX JDX SDX GDX SPDX HTM.N.FS.I. "Misty", a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Owner handler Jenny Pearson. This dog also gained her Track and Search Championship in 2020. Page 11

Other dogs to gain their Championship titles in 2020 were TS Ch T Ch Jasmine CCD RE ADX JDX SD GD SPDX HTM.I FS.N "Jasmine" a Jack Russell Terrier X- Owner handler, Jenny Pearson’s second dog, who also gained her TSDX in 2020. A great effort by Jenny Pearson. TRIPLE Ch (T) (TS) Shartooz Echos Magical Xmas HSAs “Flynn” an Australian Shepherd Dog Owned by J A Miller and S J Baillie, Handled by Josie Miller (me), he also gained his TSDX in 2020. TS Ch Tannah Harry In A Hurry "Harry" a Poodle (Standard) Owner handler Robyn Geraghty. Harry was yet another dog to gain a TSDX in 2020, along with TS Ch Rozate Night Quest Atthepole (AI) TD HSAs "Quest" an Australian Shepherd Owned by Rozate Kennels handled by Karron Jordan. TS Ch T Ch Malicloy Sir K Notes Kothrann "Sherlocke" a Bernese Mountain Dog owned and handled Nid Watt was the final dog to achieve his Championship in the 2020 season. It was a major effort by all involved, with a big leap of faith by any affiliate to run any trials at all this year. SA has indeed been in a fortunate position. Late in the year we once again found ourselves caught up in another Covid outbreak which resulted in the deferral of our SGM from it’s normal November date until January 2021. Thankyou to all the Advisory Committee for all the work put in this year. Thankyou to the Office staff and CEO (s) of DogsSA who have supported us through the Year. 2021 will also be an interesting year and I hope we can get the Tracking and Track and Search season underway in April/May. Josie Miller Chairperson Tracking Advisory Committee.

OBEDIENCE ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2020

This will be my last report as Chair of the OAC. I have been in the position for well over 10 years now and I think that in the interests of renewal it is time for me to pass on the baton. We are fortunate that Neil MacDonald has agreed to take up the reins. The Committee this year has been functioning on a very minimalist basis, comprising Neil, Jeff Hartshorne and myself. Many thanks to both Neil and Jeff for their efforts this year. I sincerely hope that after tonight we will have some fresh, and hopefully younger, faces on or Committee. Obviously 2020 has been a challenging year due to the effects of COVID. We lost pretty much 75% of our trialing year due to the shutdown which had a huge impact. As a result, we made the difficult decisions to cancel the State Obedience Championships in September and to forego the Annual Awards this year. All qualifying results for the Annual Awards have been recorded and will count towards the 2021 Awards. This year saw the finalisation of the rules reviews for Obedience and Rally. We just managed to squeeze in the National Conference before the COVID shutdown and the new rules have now been published. As usual, there was a bit of a mixture of outcomes, some good and some not so. One of the good results was the rectification of the ridiculous situation regarding Obedience Jump heights we have endured for the past 5 years. On the not so good side was the removal of the Out of Sight Sit Stay from Open Obedience. These stays have been a feature of Open class for as long as anyone can remember and a tangible Page 12

sign of progression from the Novice class. I do not believe that removing this exercise will be beneficial in any way to the standard of competition. In addition, in the subsequent reallocation of points for the remaining Open exercises as a result of this decision, we now have the curious situation where dogs will now receive the same maximum number of points for retrieving a dumbbell over an obstacle as for retrieving a dumbbell on flat ground. As usual I would like to thank Lynn Fielden for maintaining the trial results. Thanks also to all our DogsSA Office staff in Wolfgang, Ann, Cheryl and Hayley for their assistance. With Wolfgang’s retirement we welcome Roz Becker to the role of EO and look forward to a long and fruitful association. Looking forward to next year I’m sure everyone will be keen to get back into trialling in a big way. Lets all hope that 2021 is a huge one. In closing, on behalf of the Committee I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and holiday period and every success in the new year. Brian Fielder Chair, Obedience Advisory Committee

DANCES WITH DOGS ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2020 Despite some events being cancelled or postponed due to COVID 19, this has been a very busy year for the DWD fraternity, which included the addition of the newly sanctioned discipline of Trick Dog Tests. In January, DWD demonstrations were held at the Adelaide Museum during its exhibition on “Dogs”. An educational component was added to the usual Presentation, with the MC giving background on the various breeds represented prior to their individual performances. A short display on “How to Teach Your Dog a Trick or Two” was also very popular. Other planned demonstrations at public venues were cancelled. January also saw SA’s first three Trick Dog Judges succeed in gaining their licencesIn March, Barb Murfett, national DWD & Tricks Committee Chair, came to SA to meet with these foundation Tricks Judges and one Trainee to discuss training issues, interpretation of rules, management and judging of Tricks’ Tests. The Advisory Panel held practical Training for Handlers in September and several Mock Tests were conducted by the Gawler Dog Club. These were well-attended which augers well for Trick Dog Tests in SA. The first sanctioned Tricks Test, a double-header, was held in August by Gawler Dog Training Club. Another in September with SAODC holding its first in October. Twice weekly Classes in DWD and basic Tricks conducted by the DWD Club were halted briefly, but adaptation to COVID19 compliance allowed them to continue through to November. A successful one-day, non-dog DWD workshop titled, “Putting Your Best Foot Forward”, was held in August. The ranks of DWD Judges has now swelled to 13 and changes to the Rules pertaining to Judges eligibility, applicable from Jan 2021, should assist in increasing that number.

There are currently 5 Trick Dog Test Foundation Judges, plus one Trainee for 2021. . Lynne Staplyton, Elaine Kennedy DeniseAdams, Irma Crews and Jenny McLoughlin all gained their Trick Dog Judges license,. One foundation DWD judge, Irma Crews renewed her DWD licence this year and also gained her Trick Dog Tests licence: with another foundation DWD judge also being successful in becoming a Trick Dog Judge. We also gained one new Trainee DWD Judge, Maryka Spurling-Janes who was successful this year, with another two DWD Trainees anticipated for 2021. One DWD Judges Training Session held in June was conducted with half attending in person and the other half via Zoom. The second Session is yet to be conducted. Contact has been maintained with members of the ANKC DWD/Tricks group, with work on statistical analysis being undertaken, which should help better align our sport with counterparts in other States. One DWD Competition (the Royal Show) was cancelled and another postponed due to COVID 19, however it is anticipated that 2020 will include a total of eight competitions. Plans for South Australia’s inaugural combined DWD and Tricks State Championship 2021 are progressing well, despite the difficulties we face in trying to advance these disciplines in SA. The lack of a suitable, affordable venue to conduct DWD competitions and workshops does hamper us. Appropriate modifications of and access to the SACA Hall would certainly be welcomed; and we will continue to seek support for this from Council. In addition, and more easily accommodated, is more appropriate use of the currently under-utlised Bowling Green which would allow Tricks Tests, training and other events during conformation shows. Members of the Advisory Committee have met with the new CEO of Dogs SA and it is hoped our requests will be met with a more positive response in the future. In closing I cannot speak highly enough of the support our disciplines have received from the DWD/Tricks community throughout what has been a particularly challenging year. Without such enthusiasm and input, DWD and Tricks would not have developed as well as it has in this State. There are so many people that I cannot name them all, but one who does deserve special acknowledgement is Lynne Staplyton. Without her, I doubt Trick Dog Tests would be in such a healthy situation. The other is Councillor Rae Hedger who has been a great supporter for our two disciplines since their inception. I also take this opportunity to thank the three members of our Advisory Panel: Maryka Spurling-Janes, Tegan Whalan and Dan McLoughlin. Dan’s ill health did not deter him from giving tremendous support with his penchant for financial management and eye for detail being most useful. Tegan, with her vast background in the ‘dog world’ also played a valuable role. Maryka, who, although new to the ‘dog world’, has performed the role of Secretary in a most diligent manner. Her active support and analytical mind have ensured we met all our obligations . . . and more. I look forward to working with these three stalwarts in our sport as well as welcoming Jo Murrell to our team. It means we will have a full complement of five members, something we have not enjoyed for quite some time. Margaret Bourn Chair, DWD Advisory Committee South Australia February 2021

EARTHDOG ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2020

The Earthdog 2020 Season was a disappointing one as it was affected by COVID 19 and no Earthdog Tests or Training took place. After the initial COVID advice was received from Dogs SA suspending meetings, just as the 2020 season was about to begin, the Earthdog Advisory Committee regretfully decided not to seek an exemption from the suspension of Tests due to: • the short period of time to plan the re-start the sport in the remaining winter months; • the additional effort required to be COVID Safe under the implemented; & • the unplanned absence of some of the Committee due to illness/personal reasons. However, the Advisory Committee will consider having additional training opportunities prior to, and during, the 2021 Season. The only event to take place in 2020 will be the Earthdog demonstrations as part of Dogs SA’s “Festival of Dogs”. These demonstrations should prove to be interesting as clear sided tunnels have been especially constructed and will be placed above ground - allowing a unique view of what our Earthdogs get up to! Also, based on the experience of testing these tunnels, they will prove a significant training aid going forward. The other activity that commenced in 2020 was the Earthdog Regulations Review. Submissions were called for by the ANKC in January this year. Following consultation with Competitors and Judges this Advisory Committee submitted our recommended changes to Dogs SA, which was forwarded to the ANKC in July. It is anticipated that we will receive the agenda, which will include all States’ submissions, shortly. Following receipt of the agenda, the following is planned to take place: • A notice will be placed in the Dogs SA Journal and Website advising Competitors and Judges of a meeting to review the ANKC agenda and to formulate the Dogs SA position on those agenda items; • A record will be made of the consensus of the meeting of Competitors and Judges which will act as the final instructions to SA’s Earthdog ANKC delegate, Tegan Whalan, on voting for all agenda items; • The National Earthdog Committee meeting to decide on the regulation changes will be held April/May 2021; • It is expected that the minutes of the National Earthdog Committee meeting will receive ratification by the ANKC and distributed to Dogs SA around October 2021; & • The new Regulations will be published in November 2021 with an Effective Date of January 2022. The other activity of interest planned for 2021 will be the ongoing refinement of the construction of the Strong Dog weighted pelt, which proved somewhat difficult for dogs to retrieve successfully in its first season of operation last year. Financially, there was no revenue for 2020 but some minor costs were incurred. This will reduce the previous surplus by approximately $100. I have drafted a detailed Financial Report, which has been distributed to the meeting. The surplus at the end of 2020 is expected to be approximately $3,900. Thanks must be given to those who have accepted nominations to stand for Committee in 2021. The effort the Committee put in to support the sport, along with Judges, is very much appreciated and without which there would be no sport. Good luck everyone in 2021 – I certainly hope next season works out much better than 2020! Page 13

CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required. 2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16) 3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce. 4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases. 5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime. (01/20) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20) 6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. 7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19) 8. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/ or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. 11. “It’s awesome!” - Juniors in Agility in SA

Attracting young people into dog sports is a challenge, but as those who are currently competing or have recently been involved highlight, “it’s awesome!” Here’s what five young people of varying ages have to say about doing agility1. We thank them for sharing their experience – they too are ‘awesome’! Their insights also raise ideas for how we might better support Juniors (i.e. competitors up to age of 18), including for example, having a range of older, experienced dogs available for Juniors to train and/or run with – on a regular, periodic or interim basis. And how to attract and retain young people who haven’t grown up being around agility? But for now, we invite you to enjoy the stories that follow.

Chloe Bartlett

My dog Lexie and I started competing in agility in 2017. Lexie was involved in obedience training at the same club as where my uncle was doing agility. We decided to give agility a try and Lexie really seemed to love it. I thought that this would be a good way to keep her fitness up which is quite important for her breed; she’s a pug! The best thing I like about agility is spending time one on one time with my dog. Agility has brought us so much closer and she always wants to make me proud. I have also had the chance to meet so many people that are also involved in agility that have helped me with so much. I love that agility isn’t necessarily a competitive sport, we’re all supporting and helping each other out which makes it a very safe and inviting environment. The best thing Lexie and I have achieved so far is getting into masters and competing against some of the best dogs in the state. Never did I ever think I would be able to get this far in agility with a pug but all of the hard work pays off. Another big achievement would include having the opportunity to compete and win awards at the Royal Adelaide Show and Agility Nationals. That was awesome! I hope to continue on with agility as this sport has allowed me to meet new people and have lots of fun with my dog. My goals for the future would include learning different training techniques/methods with my future dogs. This would allow me to improve in certain areas and excel in trials. Being able to run a variety of dogs would also help my skills and enjoyment. This would let me have the chance to run a faster dog and learn different ways of running a course. My advice to another young person starting agility would be to be patient with your dog and most importantly have fun. It’s not a competitive sport and everyone is there to help each other out so don't be afraid to ask for help. [Chloe, a quiet achiever who has done an amazing job training a pug to masters level agility; the only pug currently competing in SA. A great handler with an awesome agility future.] Photos: at the Royal Show (Chris Bartlett); Lexie (Chloe Bartlett) Page 20

I’m 8 years old and have been doing agility for about two years. Spending time with the dogs and having fun is what motivated me to get involved. And the best thing I like about doing agility is seeing dogs and people having fun together. I like having well trained dogs. So does my mum, Mika! Actually I like everything about agility; there isn’t anything I don’t like about it! Getting passes with my dog has been the best thing I’ve achieved, so far. But the funniest thing that has happened when I’ve been doing agility was when I dropped to the floor and Mason kept on running! Yes, I want to continue doing agility. My goals are to run Mason and start training Soy, our new puppy. If I can help Mason listen to me more and not run after mum, I’d enjoy agility more and it would help me reach my goals. My advice to another young person who might be interested in starting agility is to start training your dog at home first, then do some jumping and then agility, because agility is trickier than jumping. [Go Roscoe! You are awesome, with lots ahead in Juniors, and hopefully beyond!] Photo: Jenny Barnes Photography

Agility has been in my life since I was a baby. Mum would take me to agility training and competitions when I was still in a pram, all the way through ‘til my teenage years. I started running in Juniors when I was 8 years old with our family dog Taz who was a retired Agility Champion. I also got to run with other retired agility dogs like “Biddy” owned by Judy Magarey. To start with agility was just something to do whilst at training nights and competitions. I began to really enjoy it and everyone was so supportive and nice. Then Michele Steggall asked if I wanted to train her dog Della and it progressed from there. The best thing about doing agility is having that special relationship with your dog when you work together as a team. Della and I have only just got that happening. We were both

beginners and have progressed, gaining more and more skills. We may not pass all the time but we have fun! Agility’s pretty awesome, but I’m not mad about packing up the heavy contact equipment! Highlights so far have been getting second for Top Non-Titled Novice Jumping Dog at the 2019 Agility Dog Club of SA award night and a first place for our first Excellent Jumping class at the Noarlunga trial this year. It was such a lovely smooth and fast run. It felt like all our training was finally coming together. There are always funny moments in agility and the funniest thing that has happened was at one trial where I was competing with a very lovable chocolate Labrador who decided to go under the first jump and then commenced rolling around on her back on the grass! Needless to say we got a DQ! But, I absolutely, definitely want to continue doing agility! I would like to continue working towards our Masters Qualifications in both Agility and Jumping and compete at an Agility Nationals event. To help reach these goals, it would be good to be able to attend more skills training seminars to improve my handling and ability to train Della, and other dogs in the future. My key advice to any young person who might be interested in starting agility would be to join a club and just go for it! It’s a great way to have fun with your dog and get a bit of exercise. Agility is a very rewarding sport, with a supportive and helpful community which has helped me grow as a person and develop that special bond with my dog. [Tia, on a roll! Another awesome SA Junior handler with an exciting future ahead.] Photos: with Taz (Michelle Vuaran); with Della (Mel Maiolo)

I did agility for three years but stopped last year… just didn’t have the same passion I had when I started. I got motivated to do agility through my Nenny (Unetta Shugg). I had been going to watch trials since a young age, when Nenny asked me to run her little dog, Obee - I was happy to try! The best thing I liked about doing agility was the opportunity to meet lots of new people and lots of different dogs. But I wasn’t really rapt about spending a whole day at a trial! And it would also have been more enjoyable to have more junior handlers while I was competing. The highlights - the best things I achieved – were passing in Masters Agility with Obee, then starting to train Nenny’s other Havanese, Tanzee. Going to the nationals in 2018 was awesome. And then in 2019 training my boy Zak, a border collie. I was very happy to gain my Novice Title within 2 trials with Zak. But the funniest thing that happened was having Tanzee on the start line in a trial and she just sat there. Wouldn’t move! Made me laugh and also a few spectators! If a young person is interested in starting agility, in my experience it’s important to have someone who is happy to take you to training and trials, that understands the sport – and is always encouraging. You need people who support and encourage you! [We will miss seeing Jemima and Zak at trials – they were an awesome team. Congratulations to you both on your achievements whilst in the sport.] Photos: Michelle Green

I have been training my dogs in agility since 2018 so this will be my fourth year of training and second year of competing. I’ve actually just graduated out of Juniors and am now competing as an adult! I was always amazed by the agility videos I saw of the big dog shows like Crufts and Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The relationship between the dogs and their handlers was incredible. The dogs had amazing focus and drive. It motivated me to try it! The best things I like about doing agility are all about training! I love the small wins when training… when my dog has a lightbulb moment and you can actually see them learning and picking up a new behaviour. When it comes to agility there is always something new to learn for me and for my dogs. On the flip side, my least favourite part of agility is probably when you are at a trial and you nearly have a clean run but then the dog drops a bar or something small goes wrong just when you were so close to getting a pass! Probably the highlight of my time as a Junior was when I competed in my first trial. We didn’t get a pass but I saw all of our years of training come together. I couldn’t stop smiling all day! And there have been so many funny moments over the years but the stand out moment to me was when I was competing at the Riverland Trial with Alice and she was doing so well until she saw the judge who she recognised from training and ran over to her, and rather than jumping up to say “hello” she sat down perfectly and waited for a pat. She then realised that we were trialling and ran back and finished off with a completely perfect run. Absolutely I want to continue in agility - I cannot wait for this year’s season to start! However my goals are going to be small this year. I’d like to get a couple of clean runs with my four year old Border Collie, Oliver, and start working towards his JD and AD titles. With my other two year old Border Collie, Alice, I would like to just start getting her in the ring more and maybe get a clean run. I’d also love to compete at the Royal Adelaide Show as that has been a goal since I was little. There are a number of things that would help me to enjoy agility more and reach my goals. I would love to see some new agility facilities in Adelaide. Maybe some indoor arenas so we can continue training through winter and summer. Special seminars for Juniors or even school holiday programmes would be great too. Hopefully Covid will settle soon and we can go back to having trials more often. Get in touch with a club is a key piece of advice I would give to another young person who might be interested in starting agility - send them a message or give them a call and let them know you are interested. The club should be able to help you get started in agility. If you aren’t able to get to a club, then check out some online resources and start practicing in your backyard. I even started by using chairs and broomsticks for jumps. Also don’t forget to thank your parents for driving you to training and for sitting around for hours at trials. Finally, I just want to thank everyone from the Agility Dog Club of SA, Noarlunga City Obedience Dog Club and countless others for supporting me in my agility journey. I am now lucky enough to train dogs professionally as my full time job but I would not be where I am now without the support and kindness of everyone in this community. [Brianna, from Junior dog obedience and agility into a dog-focused career; that’s awesome!] Photos: with Ollie (Jenny Barnes Photography); with Alice (Shadow Farm Photography) Footnote 1. Invitations to contribute were sent to all juniors and their parents, and parent permission was sought for publication of photos and comments. One young man is no longer competing as the dog he was running sadly passed away. Page 21

Stories around the campfire with All Breeds Dog Judge, John Lewington Judging in Alabama USA In 1998 I flew from Dalles International Airport to Columbus via Atlanta after spending a few days with Roy and Bernie Smith, St Leger Irish Wolfhounds at their horse ranch in Virginia. It was my first show in that part of the country, and I was not sure what to expect. When I arrived, there was no one to meet me so I took a taxi to the hotel. No contact from the club that night and there were no other judges staying there. The following morning the phone rang in the room at 7am while I was in the shower to inform me, I was to be picked up in ten minutes. The shows in America start at 8 am so I had to get suited and booted fast no breakfast for me. I had a full day judging indoors at the Columbus Civic Centre. It was a pleasant surprise to have 24 Irish Wolfhounds entered and the overall quality was very good. I also judged several other breeds including Rottweilers, Bull Mastiffs, St Bernards, Mastiffs and Newfoundlands. After the show, I was approached by one of the Wolfhound exhibitors, Marsha, and was asked how long I would be staying in Columbus. Marsha then asked me if I would like to stay at her home for a few days and she would show me around the area. I accepted her invitation and she picked me up from the hotel on the Monday after completion of my judging. Marsha lived in a trailer park along with her husband Rocky who was a Marine and seven Irish Wolfhounds. The park was on the banks of the river where they made the film Deliverance. It was great for me to take the dogs for a walk and wade in the shallows with the Wolfhounds keeping a wary eye out for alligators. Marsha’s friend Peggy picked me up the next morning and took me see the Confederate village, the prison site and some of the graves from the Civil War. On the way home we visited a friends Emu Farm, fancy going all the way from Australia to see Emu’s in America. The following day, Marsha took Page 22

me out to visit the Army camp where Rocky was stationed, Fort Benning GA. We wandered around and I noticed a place where they were doing haircuts. I said to Marsha I will go in and get my hair cut. She told me it was for Army personnel only. No problem I said and went back to the Army Store where I bought two Army t-shirts and put one of them on. I walked into the Barbers where there were 4 young ladies, one or two vacant chairs, I sat down, and one said to me that she had not seen me there before. I told her I was on exchange from Australia and that I would like a no 4 haircut. In the meantime, Marsha walked in and was not quite believing what she was seeing. The young lady got out her clippers and cut my hair. I told her it was the best haircut I had ever had since I had been in the army because in Australia they use the clippers that they shear the sheep with and they give you a paper towel to mop up any blood running down your face when they cut your head so it is wonderful to have a decent haircut. The girl was horrified but believed me and when I went to pay my $5 for the haircut, they told me it was a free one as they did not get many people in from Australia. Marsha and Rocky thought it was quite hilarious. So much for the security I could have been anyone, but I do not think they will forget my visit for a long time.
