2020 The year that never was. I can safely say that not many of us would have ever experienced a year like 2020. It started with devastating bush fires in many parts of Australia and just as we were starting to recover, along comes COVID 19 to knock us back down again. The year has seen not just a cessation of dog activities but where isolation and quarantine has become the norm. South Australia faired very well when compared to most of Australia so we should be grateful for that. As we move into a new year let’s not get complacent about effects of COVID 19 and practice safe distancing and support the governments initiatives to control this epidemic. Dogs SA and it’s affiliates like most in the country have taken a financial hit during 2020. The amount to Dogs SA is not fully clear at the moment as the accounts have not been closed for the year. It will however be reported on in the financial accounts provided at the AGM in March. Dogs SA did what it could to assist many of the affiliates by refunding fees and charges for events that could no longer be conducted. We also introduced a half levy to encourage affiliates to go back to conducting events with less financial risk. During the pandemic most would have realized the significant increase in Puppy enquiries and the asking price for them. The reason for this is not proven however it is believed that many people wanted a companion whilst they were home either off work or working from home. My concern is what will happen to all of those puppies when things go back to pre COVID and many go back to work and no longer need the puppy. 2020 also saw the retirement of our long-standing Executive Officer who retired after 28 years in the job. From seeing the posts on FaceBook it appears retirement has suited him with moving down to Encounter Bay. An unconfirmed rumor (this is the dog world) is that due to the number of retirees moving into that area they are considering starting up the Veteran Kennel Club. What will 2021 bring us? I have been reading tea leaves but they seem to have all given up predicting at the moment as well. Things we do know, life will go on and as the dog world has demonstrated so many times in the past, we will always band together to support each other in times of need. These are those times. We need to stand together and support each other, our affiliates and the community if we are to get through this and be stronger and wiser on the other side. The ANKC is working on a new database to manage our dogs and members. The old database has served us well but is over 20 years old, no longer supported and is not capable of doing what is now being expected in modern society. The new database will be cloud based and have the ability for members to be more self-serving by being able to renew memberships, register litters and conduct other business on line including direct debits. The ANKC is also starting to develop common rules and processes which are slowly being accepted by the member bodies. As most are aware this is something Dogs SA has been pushing for a number of years. I trust we all had a Merry Christmas and many saw in the new year with friends and relatives so lets all think positively to start the new year and kick the negativity. A reminder that there are elections for Vice President and 4 Councilors currently underway and I would like to see as many members vote as possible. We have strong lineup of candidates with 3 standing for Vice President and 8 standing for Council. I would like to wish all of them the best in their endeavors to come onto Council and look forward to working with them whoever they may be. Be safe and strong. Gr Ch Tasgall Son of a Rich Man – “Lucky” (1st SA Bred Gr Champion in over a decade)
In February “Lucky” achieved the remaining points he required to gain his Grand Champion Title. We are very proud of him being from our first litter and being a multiple in group awards and specialty winner.
Gr Ch Cathgarry Splash of Silk – “Splash” (1st Female Gr Champion in SA in over a decade)
In November when shows were on again for a while we were thrilled to see “Splash” – “ Lucky’s” mother get the remaining points she required to gain her Grand Champion title. Again we are so proud of her achievements as a multiple in group awards and specialty winner and a loving mother to her offspring.
While Our Tasgall Collies are owned and campaigned by Marty, Julie & Damien Ryan the results achieved are an accumulation of the help, guidance and assistance of many of the friends we have made on this journey. Thank You to Kathy & Gary Drew, Ian & Cheryl Spangler, Naomi, and all the other special people who have helped hold, handle, and assist us along the way, Matt, Deana, Belinda, Alana, Marlene, Miriam and Melissa. I am seeking your support for my nominations as Vice President and Councillor of our Association. Having completed my first term on Council I now have a strong understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Council in overseeing the affairs of Dogs SA to take on the role of Vice President. Being open and transparent is essential in gaining the members’ trust and I believe that my integrity and honesty, my leadership ability, my willingness to respect all points of view yet speak up when I believe something is unfair or unjust will serve you all well. I know there is much to be done during these tough times and I would be very keen to continue with what I feel is unfinished business on Council. The challenges that face our association and pose a threat to our collective interests needs all of us to work together to promote our hobby in a positive light. It is my commitment to all the members across all disciplines, that I will listen to your feedback or concerns and do my very best to present your views to council for consideration and believe that as Vice President I would be well placed to represent your views strongly and to positively influence our future direction. It is important that Council includes a diverse range of members who possess a mix of different skills, knowledge, and experience with the ability to meet the future needs of the association. The role of a Council is one of leadership, planning, resourcing, and making strategic decisions on behalf of its members and it is my intention to ensure members are kept informed and involved in the process wherever possible. Accordingly, I put forward my background and experience for your consideration. My involvement with the SA Canine Association began in 1975, briefly showing Great Danes and Dalmatians and then falling in love with my first Dobermann in 1977. Since that time, I have competed successfully in conformation with Dobermanns and in later years added Lakeland Terriers. In my current role on Council I am on the Investigation Committee, Chairperson of the Dog and Puppy of the Year committee, work with Council on a range of activities and provided information direct from SA Health to help inform the Association’s Covid strategy. Over the years I have held several Executive positions on the Dobermann Club of SA. I am a licensed conformation judge for terriers, utility and the non-sporting groups and continue to study for the working and toy groups. I am a Junior handler judge and was involved in this activity, teaching and supporting my grandsons to participate over the past 8 years. As owner of the Complete Canine Company ‘Dog Shop’ for more than 6 years I got to know most members and worked hard to provide a friendly and positive service. Professionally, I have University qualifications in my chosen profession of Nursing & Midwifery and have a Masters in Health Service Management. I am the SA State Manager of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, an organisation responsible for the registration and regulation of over 800,000 health practitioners. My significant experience working in a caring profession, professional regulation, and senior management roles, combined with my passion for my dogs and this hobby, provides me with truly diverse experience, skills, and a sound knowledge to draw on. I respectfully seek your support to represent you on Council either as Vice President or as a councillor. If you have any issues or concerns that you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact me on 0432465912 or email at sherylep@hotmail.com
Peter Dynan - For Vice President / Councillor Let me say that it continues to be a huge privilege to be able to represent you on the Dogs SA Council. I am fortunate that you have continued to support me since 2001 and am hopeful of your further support in this election. My involvement with SACA began in 1978 and continues to this day. During that time I have accepted responsibility and gained a working knowledge of many disciplines and at all levels of the dog world through Affiliate Clubs, Dogs SA and ANKC Ltd and am committed to whatever position or project undertaken. I have a firm belief that all Councillors should volunteer to undertake work on behalf of the membership and Dogs SA and to that point these are the activities that currently have my involvement, Chair of the Dogs SA Agility Advisory Committee, Chair of the ANKC National Agility Committee, Chair of several Conciliation meetings, sitting on Disciplinary panels and review Panels whenever needed. Add to this over 30 years judging in Agility, Obedience, Rally O and Endurance Tests. Included also is the training and assessment of judges in Agility and Obedience and Rally O. Dogs SA to be fair to all of its Disciplines needs representatives that have experience in more than one part of the Dogs SA fancy. My involvement includes Agility, Obedience, Rally O and Endurance Tests. If you have anything that you would like to discuss with me please call on 0419501117 or email me on pj@baonline.com.au Hopefully you will be able to continue to support me as your representative.
JEFFREY BINDING - For Councillor As it is now time for new Councillors to be elected, it is my earnest wish to be returned to Council, which will allow me to once again, serve you the members. It is important to any committee to have diverse expertise of willing workers at all levels and I have a proven record of being a reliable, willing worker, plus a long-time active member of our great sport. I am a second-generation dog person following my late parents with many years of Group six involvement. This includes being a member of several club committees, a SACA rep, Junior Handler Judge, Ring Steward, and general all-round Club and Show assist person. I can be found at most Shows, working often simply as an extra, not necessarily on that committee. I am not afraid of hard work, especially if it contributes to ongoing improvements for the general membership benefits. I also see myself as being an independent, decisive, honest, and willing to continually learn for the benefit of our Association, my own man. In support of our Association, I respectfully request you vote for my continuing support within Council. Thank you Regards Jeffrey Binding January 2021
PETER THOMPSON - For Vice President / Councillor I have now completed my second term on Council, and it has been a pleasure to serve the Canine Community in South Australia during this time. I hope to continue to do so as either Vice President or as a Councillor for the next three years. The next two Council terms will be crucial to the long-term future of Dogs SA. While obviously David Roche Park is the “Jewel in the Crown” as an asset, its primary use is for Conformation events. Investment is now needed to support and help grow our non-conformation activities, as these are the areas which will appeal most to the new dog owner and potential new Dogs SA member. For example, activities such as obedience training provide incredible value to new dog owners and our community and must be a greater priority. This is what a responsible new dog owner sees as one of their first priorities. One of the key aspects of being a Councillor is to represent members and I have always made myself available to support members and clubs on a wide range of issues, both privately and on the various Social Media avenues and will continue to do so. This is a key responsibility of a Councillor and one I believe in strongly. My continual involvement in various Dogs SA Committees, such as Winter International, Stewards Training and Festival of Dogs is well known. I ask for your support for the future and continual success of Dogs SA as the leader of Canine activities in South Australia. We must change to move forward. I am always available via mobile 0408806464, email pathompson@adelaide.on.net or Social Media.
CAROLINE MURPHY - For Councillor I am seeking the support of the membership to be elected as a Councillor. A little bit about me….. I have been a member of Dogs SA and the Golden Retriever Club of SA since arriving in Australia from the UK. I have owned and loved Golden Retrievers since 1973. I have taken part in obedience, retrieving, and conformation both here and in the UK. I am currently a trainee judge for Group Three. I have served on the committee of the Golden Retriever Club of SA on two occasions in that time, fulfilling the roles of Trophy and Sash officer, Puppy Enquiry Officer and General Committee Member. I am now coming up to retirement in my career which will mean I have more time to commit to my passion. Many of you will know me from our interactions when I was organizing and running the James Newton Show Handling Workshops which was such a great success. I hope in the future to be involved in many more initiatives to benefit all members. I am very much a team player, enthusiastic and hands on, willing to get involved and excited about the future of Dogs SA. My career as a police officer has taken me around the world, taught me how important working as a team is to any successful outcome, I am an excellent communicator, I take a balanced impartial approach, I am open minded and above all value honesty and integrity. If anyone would like to know a bit more about me, to ask any questions I am available on my mobile 0431 767066 and I am often at shows around Group Three . Thank you for your consideration

CAROLINE SHEEKEY - For Councillor I have been a member of Dogs SA for 15 years. I am passionate about pure bred dogs and advocate their promotion in a range of media. My first love is showing dogs and appreciate all disciplines: I am an active committee member of specialty clubs and all breed clubs. This includes being President and Show Manager of the Marion Kennel Club and Treasurer of the Gundog Club to name a few. I will promote the dog community moving onward ensuring a positive outlook for the general public. This begins with the Festival of Dogs, of which I am an active member of the committee. This committee is working with Dogs SA to actively promote all registered breeds. As a committee, we need to be showcasing the different pure breeds competing in different disciplines. As a Councillor I have a lot to offer Dogs SA including my willingness to help and to be an active member of a team. I am a hard worker, energetic worker with strong communication skills. I am available on my mobile 0416084571. Thank you for your consideration.
BEN LUXTON - For Councillor Dear members I am pleased to offer my skills and experience to you as a nominee for our DOGSSA Council. I have enjoyed the opportunities which membership of DogsSA provides for almost 40 years. About me: • A successful breeder/exhibitor of pugs and basenjis for over 30 years and a founding and life member of the Pug Club of South Australia Inc. • All Breeds Conformation judges since 2008 providing opportunity to participate in our sport in many countries around the world. • Executive Officer of the Dog and Cat Management Board in South Australia until 2015, retiring due to my partners ill health. The board was primarily responsible for developing strategy in collaboration with strategic partners and advising both State and Local Government agencies for the improved management of dogs and cats in our community. During my career: - tertiary education sector, government and private sector I have acquired skills, experience and knowledge in the following areas: • Managing the role and duties of elected Board members to: o Act in good faith and for proper purposes o Act with reasonable care, skill and diligence o Not to dishonestly use position or information o Avoid conflicts of interest • the current provisions of the Dog and Cat Management Act, the Animal Welfare Act and the Local Government Act; • managing and reporting on research, the development of policy for improved management practice and achieving established objectives and strategic goals; • financial, asset and risk management reviews; • publicity, marketing, communication and the importance of excellent customer service. I encourage members from all disciplines of our sport with concerns regarding the continuity of that discipline into the future within the current legislative environment which impacts us as breeders, exhibitors and dog owners in general, to consider the expertise of the candidates who can improve the knowledge and expertise of our current leadership team to vote.

Hi everyone I’m Patricia Buckley (aka Pat) and I would like to nominate for council. Whilst in the work force I gained valuable experience in managerial positions, working well within a team environment, so I am quite capable of liaising with others, a skill which can be needed at times. Previously involved with organising junior handler days for a number of years with other members of my family. I served on Projected Improvements Committee, then as treasurer for the Shetland Sheepdog Club for a couple of years and I’m still a committee member for the club. I’ve been involved with dogs all my life, firstly with Kelpies and German Shepherds that were used mainly for farm work. Long before I decided I wanted to show dogs I had been doing obedience. I have English Mastiffs which we have shown for years and have brought the first Estrela Mountain Dogs into Australia , having since imported more. After quite a lengthy time the breed was recognised enabling us to show them. Since then we have been working hard to get the breed established here. Being retired now affords me more time to spend with the dogs and family. Currently a licensed judge for groups 6 & 7 and a trainee for groups 5 & 1. I feel I would be a strong voice for our members and that I have a lot to offer, I’m hoping members will consider me for one of the positions that are about to become vacant Page 9
CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required. 2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. PRESS RELEASE – TURKISH SHEPHERD DOG SURVEY RESULTS
A survey was conducted by ANKC Ltd earlier this year to ascertain the feedback from any Member of a Canine Control affiliated with the ANKC Ltd and who was the owner of a registered Anatolian Shepherd Dog or Kangal Shepherd Dog to the following questions: 1) Do you agree to the renaming from Anatolian Shepherd Dog to Kangal Shepherd Dog? 2) Do you agree to the FCI Standard for FCI CACIB shows? 3) Do you agree to an Australian Kangal Shepherd Dog Standard for non-CACIB shows? The response received indicated support. As this was an amendment to current regulations, the result of the survey was referred to the ANKC Board of Directors for consideration at their October 2020 Special Board meeting where it was resolved that the status quo remain where there will be two breeds with the Anatolian Shepherd Dog using the current Anatolian Shepherd Dog breed standard and the Kangal Shepherd Dog using the FCI Kangal Shepherd Dog breed standard and that owners may transfer the affected dogs from one breed to the other up until the 30 June 2021. The ANKC urges those owners who want to take advantage of the transfer moratorium to ensure that they are satisfied that the dogs they are moving to the Kangal Shepherd Dog Register comply with the requirements of the Kangal Shepherd Dog Standard. As a consequence, the following new clause will be added to Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration: 6.2.4.9 Anatolian Shepherd Dog/Kangal Shepherd Dog The status quo will remain where there will be two breeds with the Anatolian Shepherd Dog using the current Anatolian Shepherd Dog breed standard and the Kangal Shepherd Dog using the FCI Kangal Shepherd Dog breed standard. Owners may transfer the affected dogs from one breed to the other up until the 30 June 2021. (Added 10/20, 5.5) Tracey Barry Administrator 24 November 2020

Proposed resolutions
PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES: a) Notice of Motion to alter the SACA Inc. Constitution: Current 10 (e) Any Officer of the Council who in the first year of their current term nominates for any other office of the Council, must resign their position in writing forthwith and prior to the close of nominations in that year. Amended 10 (e) Delete 10 (e) and renumber sub paragraphs as it contradicts both the existing and proposed amendment to 12 (c) Responsible: Dogs SA Council b)
Notice of Motion to alter the SACA Inc. Constitution:
Current 11 (16) Ballot papers and envelopes shall be distributed to members through the January issue of the South Australian Canine Association Journal. If the Returning Officer supplies ballot papers and envelopes to the printer for insertion in the South Australian Canine Association Journal, it shall be presumed that he/she fulfilled his/her obligations under this sub-rule. Amended 11 (16) Ballot papers and envelopes shall be distributed to members in January. If the Returning Officer supplies ballot papers and envelopes to the printer for distribution to the members, it shall be presumed that he/she fulfilled his/her obligations under this sub-rule. RATIONALE: This amendment covers the situation where members have elected not to receive a printed Journal. Responsible: Dogs SA Council c) Notice of Motion to alter the SACA Inc. Constitution: Current 12 (c) Any member of Council who wishes to stand for another position on Page 12
President/Secretary
Council must resign their current position prior to the nominated cut-off date to enable their position and the position they aspire to, to be voted on at the same election. Failing to resign prior to the cut-off date renders the Councillor ineligible to stand for that vacancy. The cut-off date will be determined by the Executive Officer immediately on becoming aware of a casual vacancy Amended 12 (c) 12 (c) Any member of Council, whose term is not expiring, wishing to stand for another position on Council must tender their resignation of their current position prior to the nominated cut-off date to enable their position and the position they aspire to, to be voted on at the same election. The effective date of the resignation will be a firm date which precedes the next Annual General Meeting, once tendered the resignation cannot be withdrawn. Failing to resign prior to the cut-off date renders the Councillor ineligible to stand for that vacancy. The cutoff date will be determined by the Executive Officer. 03/11 RATIONALE: As explained by the former EO Wolfgang Schnitzer at the July Council meeting, the intent of Rule 12 ( c ) was that only Councillors who’s term was not expiring would have to resign by the nominated cutoff date to enable their positions to also be advertised. The proposed amendment to 12 (c) does not change the intent, just clarifies any ambiguity. The clarification of this rule, and reinforced by the proposed amendment, would at least allow Councillors in the same election grouping to nominate for either President or Vice President in case either decided after the cut-off date not to stand for any reason. I believe that the last sentence in the existing 12 ( c ) “The cut-off date will be determined by the Executive Officer immediately on becoming aware of a casual vacancy” would cover the unfortunate demise of either incumbent after the nominated cut-off date and thus enable the position to be open to any Councillor. Responsible: Dogs SA Council
d) Motion:- Change To Constitution. The current Constitution currently reads, 10. THE COUNCIL (d) All Officers of the Council shall hold office for three years (in accordance with the rotating system herein provided) or such other term as is prescribed by the provisions hereof and shall be eligible for reelection to such office or any other office of the Council. To be amended to read, (d) All Officers of the Council shall hold office for three years (in accordance with the rotating system herein provided) or such other term as is prescribed by the provisions hereof and shall be eligible for reelection to such office or any other office of the Council, however no member of Council can serve more than two consecutive terms in any one position of Council. RATIONALE: In today’s society, our Association needs to grow and evolve with modern day thinking. This amendment is designed to at least allow for Office Holders and regular Councillors to change at regular intervals, in order to ensure diversity in thinking and skill sets. It may be argued that at times, we could risk being “Stuck” without enough candidates. In response, this should not be considered a risk, because knowing vacancies would exist should motivate the membership to be more proactive and motivated to consider running for Council. It does not preclude any member of Council opting to serve in a different position on Council. It is my belief and hope that this amendment with a mixture of established and new members on Council will refresh our Council to lead us into the future. The motion allows for a member to be on Council for a period of up to six years in any one position, and that should give enough time to formulate and put forward their visions. We have many members with a vast pool of experience, and this motion I believe may encourage them to stand for our Council. Responsible: Stephen Schwerdt e) Motion:- Change To SACA Rule Book Items to assist in conducting business better now and into the future. 1. Part VI CATALOGUES a) GENERAL LODGEMENT OF MARKED CATALOGUE (a) amend to read … a copy of the catalogue, either hard copy via mail, or via email, containing a full and correct list of all entries and marked with the points and placings awarded and details of any absentees; and (b) – delete …. Each judges sheet signed by the judge and in (Confirmation by the steward as well) Amend to read …. Affiliate conducting the event to retain judges sheets signed by judge and/or steward for a period of not less than three (3) clear calendar months. RATIONALE: These sheets are no longer needed to be lodged with the Dogs SA Office, but need to be retained for reference by the affiliate conducting the event, should there be any discrepancies. Responsible: Wendy Baker f) Motion:- Change To SACA Rule Book Items to assist in conducting business better now and into the future. 2. Part VIII EXHIBITIONS Conditions of Entry 20 Insert (c) Entry to shows may be emailed to the convenor. Providing that the affiliate has indicated that they will accept email entries on their schedules, and have a prescribed form that can be emailed out upon request by exhibitor. Exhibitors must request the form from the affiliate. No entry will be taken as received until the prescribed fees are duly paid to the affiliate. RATIONALE: Affiliates now have the ability to accept entries from exhibitors and enter to the online system, and process the funds directly to their own account. Savings to exhibitors in fees and charges. Instant processing of fees to affiliates own account. Responsible: Wendy Baker g) Motion:- Change To SACA Rule Book Items to assist in conducting business better now and into the future. 3. PART VIII EXHIBITIONS Refusal of Entries 38 (a) AMEND TO READ …. The committee of any Affiliate Member conducting an Exhibition under these Rules shall have the right to refuse or return any entry provided that the decision to do so is made at a properly convened and constituted meeting of that committee and such January 2021
a decision is communicated, in writing, or via email, giving the reasons, to the intending exhibitor at least (remove 7 days) clear days before the Exhibition is scheduled to be held REMOVE 7 DAYS – REPLACE WITH three (3) days. RATIONALE: Most affiliate clubs now are closing their entries on the Sunday prior to a show weekend, this is only 4-5 days clear to their first show. If an affiliate has any reason to refuse an entry, they need to have time to email the exhibitor to let them know, and for the exhibitor to still have time to utilise rule 38 (b) to lodge an appeal Responsible: Wendy Baker h) Motion:- Introduction of Recycling Bins at DRP RATIONALE: The container recycling scheme came into effect in SA in 1975. How are we handling this 44 years on? The current bins used for recycling bottles, cans etc at DRP has not worked. This is not surprising considering the lack of appropriate signage and the similarity of the recycling bin and waste bin. It’s time this issue was sorted and the appropriate colour coded bins for recycling and waste with appropriate signage and education was used to bring DRP up to community acceptable standards. I’m sure Members would appreciate an odour control measure on the waste bins used to collect dog waste. Opening the waste bins during summer can at times test the stability of ones stomach contents. Below is an example of recycling bins in use at Semaphore Beach (2019). If there are any issues I’m sure KESAB or the local council would help resolve them. Note a distinctive lid colour and appropriate signage to indicate the bins purpose. A more obstructive opening could be considered, having to force containers through the opening. This would potentially stop people putting poo bags in the container bin. Smart City Solutions provide solutions where by capacity is increased x8 (not cheap), reduces odour and Wi-Fi hub in the bin system. Adelaide and Salisbury Councils are following through on this concept. “People are good basically, they just need to be shown” Billy Connolly Responsible: Gordon Radcliffe i) Motion: Nomination for Life Membership – Wolfgang Schnitzer Wolfgang has been involved with the South Australian Canine Association for over 40 years as an exhibitor, breeder and of course our Executive Officer. He has been a well-respected breeder of both Standard Smooth and Standard Long Dachshunds, breeding top winners in both breeds and winning the Australian Dachshund National five times. For almost 30 years Wolfgang has served the dog community of South Australia, working in the office of Dogs SA in both an administrative role and then as the Executive Officer for 28 years. During his time as Executive Officer he built up the office which now has the reputation throughout the ANKC Ltd as the most effective and friendliest of the eight member bodies. Wolfgang has always worked hard and in a fair and equitable manner to accommodate all disciplines of the South Australian Dog World, especially giving assistance beyond with Conformation Judges Training as an Examiner/Assessor and the physical setting up of both Theory and Practical Examinations. He has always been obliging to go the extra mile to ensure the Association achieved it’s objectives. Even after retirement Wolfgang has offered to continue to assist the Association by responding to questions where there does not always appear to be a logical answer. I know many believe that Wolfgang was paid for his services but not many know of the additional sacrifices he made as the Executive Officer including the additional hours that were not paid, the number of times he would be called out at night in response to the security alarms being activated, or the number of members that would accost him at a show when he was there as an exhibitor. After working with Wolfgang over the past 15 years as President I have seen the dedication Wolfgang has applied to the Association and consider him more than worthy of Life Membership to the South Australian Canine Association (Dogs SA). Responsible: Brian Parker 10 Meeting close AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE AGM: General Business not pertaining to the Annual General Meeting. The President will open the meeting for any general discussion members would like to raise with Council for their consideration and/or action. This discussion period will be limited to one (1) hour. At the conclusion of General Business, a light supper will be provided for all attendees. Page 13

General Business: A Management and Development of Agility in SA
Agility is a discipline that is evolving rapidly, as are the needs and processes for engaging the community in the development of agility in SA. In contrast to other Australian states and internationally, agility has been declining locally. We believe it is time for renewal and rejuvenation with respect to how the sport is promoted and managed in our state. The current AAC chairperson, Mr Peter Dynan, has been in the position
Furthermore it was apparent at the AGM on 9th Nov 2020 that the current chairperson has lost the confidence of a majority of the agility community to lead the management of agility in SA. Results from a survey undertaken with agility community members during 2020 further confirms a call for new leadership, fresh ideas and transparent processes that are consistent with a membership-based organisation. There is an urgent need to nurture leadership and development of agility in SA, and engagement at different levels and in different ways across the sport. We believe this is critical to us if we are to grow our community and thrive as a contemporary sport. Therefore, we strongly believe it is time for a change and new leadership, and respectfully present the following two motions for discussion and voting. These motions acknowledge that some processes will take time to evolve whilst calling for an immediate change of leadership to restore a positive approach to agility in SA. Motion 1: That DogsSA with the AAC and in collaboration with the agility community, develop clear and transparent processes for the election of AAC members and the appointment of the AAC chairperson, consistent with a contemporary membership-based organisation. Motion 2: That the DogsSA Council appoint an interim AAC chairperson, effective immediately, until such time that a new chairperson can be properly elected or appointed in consultation with the agility community or AAC. SACA RULE CHANGES Effective January 2021 Part II Memberships B AFFILIATE MEMBERS APPROVED BY COUNCIL TO CONDUCT EXHIBITIONS Obedience, Tracking and Agility 3. To become an Affiliate Member approved to conduct Obedience, Tracking and Agility exhibitions, an Affiliate Member must satisfy Council that; PREVIOUS RULE 3 (d). the applicant is conducting Obedience or Tracking or Agility training programs on a regular basis of sufficient standard to satisfy Council. NEW RULE 3 (d). any Affiliate who conducts an exhibition in a discipline for which they do not currently provide training will be required within a period of two years from the date of that exhibition to clearly demonstrate they are providing training in that discipline on an ongoing basis. If they are unable to demonstrate they are training on an ongoing basis within that time they will no longer be able to conduct further exhibitions in that discipline. (01/21). RATIONALE
Helen Randall gives agility competitors of all age a ‘good run for their money’! At the young age of 78, she may be SA’s oldest current competitor. And she’s successful! With her two dogs, Megs and Tooey, she is consistently placing in the top order. Helen, how did you get into agility? I’d gained Grade 5 Obedience with my Aussie, Megs. As an energetic working breed dog, I was wondering what I could do to keep him active and interested. A friend introduced me to agility – I’d never heard of it before! It sounded amazing. So I started training with Jacky Zakelj – she didn’t tell me I was too old! – and she got me trialling. Megs loved it and I loved it! Mentally and physically, it was stimulating – and the best weight-loss program going! And a year later when I was 70 and Megs was 3 years old, we started trialling. What have been some of the highlights over the past 8 years? With Megs, I won the first trophies I’ve ever got in my life. They still have pride of place at home! He’s 11 years old now and with Masters level titles across agility, jumping and some games, he’s retiring. Tooey, my gorgeous kelpie girl, came to me as a rescue dog from AWDR. She’s very different to Megs, and I’ve had to learn a different way of handling with her. It was so exciting to win the State Championship in Novice Agility with her – a special highlight. She is 6 now and almost has her Masters titles in jumping and agility. Another delight has been been introducing people to agility – folks, young and old, love watching our demos at the annual Macclesfield Strawberry Fete. It gets people appreciating what dogs and people can do as a team. What do you enjoy most about agility? The joy my dogs get from doing it! They love it. And I love training; since I got involved I’ve learnt so much more about dog behaviour and ways to train and build confidence and skills – theirs and mine! And though training and trialling, I’ve developed some really good friendships. The agility community are very supportive. What have you learnt? Oh gosh, I’ve learnt SO MUCH! Mostly from my dogs!! But from friends and instructors and especially from Susan Garrett (online) and One Mind Dogs (workshops and online). Dogs are so much more clever than I ever thought. I want to keep improving my skills but sometimes all the information about different methods can be a bit overwhelming so I’m learning to take what will work for me, what ‘feels right’ for me. Tooey, who is a sensitive soul, has taught me the most important lesson – always keep it fun for the dog. Amazing things can happen when we let go and just enjoy! What advice might you offer to others? It’s never too late! For me, agility has become a passion – and everyone needs a passion in life.
The rationale to the rule change was to allow Obedience, tracking and Agility Affiliates the opportunity to conduct a trial on an activity that may be new or not normally conducted by the affiliate to gauge interest within their own clubs or externally without having to already be training in that activity. Council considered the existing rule too onerous on the affiliates and that they needed time before having to conduct training in the activity. Discussion was held on the appropriateness of officials at these events and it was considered that he affiliates would take the necessary actions to ensure suitably experienced and where required approved officials would be sought from other affiliates to assist as occurs when breed clubs host trials.

What is the ANKC Herding Program? (Adapted from ANKC rules)
Herding instinct is a precious part of a herding breed’s heritage. It is also a vital component that can be easily lost when breeding for other purposes. The ANKC Herding Program is designed to preserve the traditional style and herding instincts of the many herding breeds. Herding dogs around the world developed different styles to suit the terrain and type of work required. Herding Tests provide an entry to the program and an opportunity to gauge basic instinct and ability before progressing through to the Trial classes The ANKC Herding Program currently offers 3 different trial courses to cater for the majority of working breeds A Course – This is the general “farm dog” course. It is held in a small paddock/arena and requires dogs to move stock through a range of obstacles and gates, simulating stock movement on an average property. B Course – This is an open field trial, similar to English Working Trials. If you have ever watched BBCs “One Man and his Dog”, B Course is similar to this and requires the dogs to collect and control the movement of stock in a large open paddock from 45m to 360m away from the handler. C Course – This course reflects a tending shepherd's day, as he/she accompanies the flock, moving to various unfenced grazing areas. The sheep must be allowed to graze peacefully, contained within specified unfenced areas, and safely guided on the roads between those areas. The dog patrols to guard against sheep trespassing onto the adjoining field, while the sheep graze and are moved along roads. C Course requires the dog control a larger number of sheep and each trial run takes up to 45 minutes to show prolonged working ability. In addition to the 3 courses, herding can run on 3 stock types to further account for different working styles – sheep, ducks and cattle (with the exception of C course which is only ever run on sheep)
HSAsd – Herding Started A Course (sheep & ducks) HXBc – Herding Advanced B Course (cattle) Dogs can be titled to different levels on different course and stock types. For example you might be participating in Advanced B Course Sheep but only Intermediate for Ducks and Started for A course. After gaining an advanced title handlers and dogs can work towards Herding Champion titles for that course and stock type. These appear before the dog’s name and are shown as:
Test Classes and Titles
HCH – Herding Champion (5 more passes in Herding Advanced, with scores of 85 points from the same course and stock type as the Advanced title was gained)
Progression through the program requires handlers to first complete an Instinct Certificate. This is a very short test to show that the dog has desire to work and handler has basic control. No title is granted for this.
GR HCH – Grand Herding Champion (An additional 5 qualifying scores of over 85 points after submission for HCH whilst competing in Advanced in the same course & with the same stock as the HCH was gained)
After the Instinct Test the handler can opt to participate in a herding Test. 2 passes of Herding Test gains the HT test title. This test is optional and is there as a steppingstone for handlers and dogs wanting more experience before the required Pre-Trial Test.
VHCH – Versatile Herding Champion (For dogs who meet the criteria of Herding Champion on 2 course or stock types)
The Pre Trial test requires the dog to move stock in a controlled manner and through some gates in an arena to show that the dog is able to control movement of the stock and handler can demonstrate effective control. 2 passes at Pre-Trial level grants the PT title and from here handlers can chose their preferred trial path.
Each accompanied by the course and stock type gained on

Stories around the campfire with All Breeds Dog Judge, John Lewington Battle of the Champions For a number of years, I was asked to help with the annual Battle of the Champions event which was at the time, held at the Adelaide Greyhound track. My part in the show was to give the whole thing a bit of theatre, music, lights, etc. This particular year the Hills Kennel Club who organised the dinner show decided that they would like something a bit more spectacular for the Best in Show so could I come up with something a bit different. The show was held in the dining area of the race club with exhibitors and handlers dressed in formal gear for the event. A draw was held to determine order of judging, two dogs in the ring together where the three judges examined and moved the dogs, they were not to confer. They then held up a card A or B to indicate their winner who would then move on to the next round until there were only two dogs left, one of which would be crowned Champion. Each dog was introduced into the ring by the late Bill Egan and during the judging I played soft classical music. For the final, I had decided to use a follow spot (light) and a smoke machine to give the whole thing a bit of class. To do this I had to enlist a bit of help from friends in the dog world who were at the show. On completion of the judging a small picket fence was put in the middle of the show area with a number of large pot plants. The smoke machine was set up in amongst the plants and the follow spot was at the edge of the room ready to pick up the winner. This was being coordinated by me from behind the bar where I had my sound desk. The light and smoke operators were fitted with headsets, as was I, so what could possibly go wrong. I had given instructions to my friend who was operating the smoke machine. I explained there was a ten second delay so I would call GO ten secs before the spotlight was given the okay. The lights were turned off it was pitch black in the room the proud winner walked out with his dog to a designated spot to a loud fanfare and I said GO SMOKE ten seconds later SPOT LIGHT GO as they announced the winner. It was a great way to crown the Champion Dog and owner standing in the spotlight with a small amount of smoke coming out through the plants. There was a problem to everyone’s horror, the smoke kept coming and the winner disappeared from view engulfed in smoke, they suddenly reappeared coughing and sputtering. My friend had forgotten about the ten second delay and panicked when the smoke didn’t appear straight away so she kept pushing the button. I knew what had happened immediately but was unable to do anything about it. It just goes to show the best made plans of men and beast sometimes go wrong. The winner took it very well and could see the funny side of it but to be fair I will leave the names of those involved to people’s imagination.

GUIDElINES FOR THE CONDUCT OF CONFORMATION SHOWS – 1/12/2020 During the current COVID-19 Pandemic, the following guidelines will operate for the conduct of Conformation Shows in South Australia. Note that these guidelines are in conjunction with the SA Department of Health and other Government Guidelines that are applicable at the time of the Show.
CONDITIONS OF ENTRY If you have even mild symptoms, please stay at home, and get tested. If you are a close contact of a person self-isolating, or have been ordered to self isolate please do not attend the event. If you have visited a venue listed, at the date and time specified, on the Contract Tracing Locations page of the SA Health Website you must follow the directions for that Location. • All adult attendees and unaccompanied minors at the event must check in using the QR code applicable to that event either via Smartphone using the mySA GOV app or present to a club official and check in via the manual contract tracing attendance record log. • COVID SAfe Check-In is a new feature that has been added to the free mySA GOV app. You can download the mySA GOV app using your smart phone. In the mySA GOV app, select the COVID SAfe Check-In tile when you arrive at a venue or business, and follow the prompts to scan their unique QR code and check in. You are not required to login to use the COVID SAfe Check-In feature. Download the app from Google Play or the App Store. If you do not have a compatible smart phone, a paper record will be available for you to provide your details. Please refer to https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/business-and-work/ covid-safe-check-in for more details. • Entries are open to all States SA Health has removed border restrictions from at the time of entries closing. Note should the borders be re-closed after entries close entry fees will not be refunded for interstate exhibits. • As 1,000 people are allowed on the grounds it is highly unlikely that there will be a need to restrict entry or visitors. However strict social distancing rules should be followed by all. • Online Entry preferred. • Failure to adhere to any instruction issued by an Official including COVID Marshalls may result in the exhibitor being required to immediately leave the grounds and they may be subject to disciplinary action. • Paper Catalogues are permitted to be ordered and sold. • Place Ribbons are required as per Dogs SA Rules. • Only normal spacing of Gazebos is required. • Please observe current social distancing and density requirements in force on the day of the show. This includes where people of different households share a Gazebo. Note that the area of a 3m x 3m Gazebo is 9 square metres, whilst a 2.4m x 2.4m Gazebo is 5.74 square metres. • The SA Health recommendations on the COVID Safe Plan read “Consider limiting the duration of any activity to 2 hours or less where possible.” As most Groups are completed within or close to this timeframe, there is no need for Exhibitors to leave the grounds as soon as possible after elimination of competition. However, current Social distancing rules must be maintained.
PHYSICAL DISTANCING • Total numbers shall not exceed the SA Government Gazetted COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement Order current at the time of the show. • There shall be no congregating or setting up under the Ring Awnings or Pergola area. • Practise good hygiene by cleaning your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or sanitizer, after visiting a common area, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. • No person shall encroach into the Steward’s designated safety zone. Page 24
• Masks may be worn by Officials and Exhibitors - but are not compulsory. • Hand sanitiser or soap and water shall be available for Judges and Stewards. Exhibitors are encouraged to provide their own. • All Venders and Patrons shall adhere to physical distancing rules and maintain COVID-19 safety requirements. • Only Handlers of the Breed currently being judged shall be in the judging precinct. If Dogs need to be changed from one class to the next, handlers are to advise the Steward prior to entering the ring for the class prior. Appropriate time must be allowed for changes to occur. The Steward may exercise discretion when no changes are required. At all times appropriate social distancing should be adhered to. • Exhibitors shall enter the ring area via the entrance and depart via the exit maintaining physical distancing at all times whilst in the ring. “IN” and “OUT” signs should be posted, and Stewards advise the exhibitors. • Ring equipment shall be regularly sanitised during the event. • When Group Specials is being judged, the Steward shall remind exhibitors of Social Distancing requirements both when gaiting and stacking. Only Handlers of the Class in Group next to be judged should be in the Assembly area. If Dogs need to be changed from one class to the next, handlers are to advise the Steward prior to entering the ring for the class prior. Appropriate time must be allowed for changes to occur. The Steward may exercise discretion when no changes are required. At all times appropriate social distancing should be adhered to.
JUDGING • Judges are permitted to examine dogs in a standard manner as they are not in contact with the exhibitor for longer than 15 minutes. This has been confirmed by the SA Government ORSR COVID-19 Support Team. • Judges are encouraged to spend no more than 30 seconds going over an individual exhibit. • Where there is more than one entry in a class, exhibitors must adhere to physical distancing rules. • Judges must maintain good hygiene practices as appropriate whilst judging. • When judging Group Specials, Judges may shortlist the Group.
COLLECTION OF NUMBERS, CATALOGUES AND CHALLENGES • The normal Ticket Window can be used with a maximum of 2 people in the Room to maintain appropriate Social distancing at the window. Only 2 lines for exhibitors so Social distancing rules can be maintained between exhibitors. Appropriate signage should be used, i.e. Groups 1-3, 4-7 or similar to assist exhibitors.
