President’s Report June has been a busy month for the Dogs SA with a number of significant events in different disciplines. Firstly the Winter Festival (International). The number of entries was very promising early in the piece until Melbourne went back into lock down which had a significant effect on entries. Nevertheless the event was a great success utilizing interstate judges in place of the normally international panel. The month also saw the State Agility Championships being held. I visited there on the Saturday afternoon and was very impressed with the condition of the grounds and the way the event was being managed. I would also like to congratulate the Agility Advisory Committee and the affiliates that worked so hard. There is a significant amount of equipment that is needed to host such an event and it was good to see that a number of the affiliates contributed to the loaning of that equipment. The German Shepherd Dog Club of SA also held their state Championship show over the month. Again, this event was affected by the restrictions imposed by COVID. The club as usual hosted a superior event and the friendship displayed by exhibitors was enlightening. The Golden Retriever Club hosted the annual eye screening day at David Roche Park with Dr Read. This is very important day for many breeds as hereditary eye disorders are prevalent in many breeds and this testing is the only way to identify those animals effected and to reduce the instances of the disease. The ANKC Board of Directors held the June meeting via ZOOM. This means of conducting the special meetings of the Board in February and June provides a significant saving to the ANKC Ltd. The details of the resolutions passed will be provided in the August Journal once they have been ratified. Not at all least June saw a very big announcement for one of our long serving volunteers, Mrs Margaret Bush. Margaret was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her services not just as the Dogs SA Canteen Manager but also to several other volunteer organizations over many years. These included a number of dog committees, catering manager for the Dressage Club of SA (20 Years), former volunteer nurses aid and lavender lady at Glenside Hospital and also a recipient of the Premiers Certificate for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 2019. On behalf of Dogs SA Council, Staff and Members I congratulate Margaret on her award which was well and truly deserved. Many of you would already know the office has a new Office Assistant. Her name is Georgia and I am sure you will all welcome her to Dogs SA as I and others have done who visited the office. As for the replacement of the Executive Officer, Council is deliberating on the most effective means of recruiting to ensure we get the right person and members will be kept updated as this progresses. With the cold snap occurring at the moment remember it is not just us that needs comforting warmth but also our dogs. So if it is cold for you remember to give extra blankets and warmth. All Dogs SA Members. Just a kindly reminder for the dog and cat Registration Renewal period come 1 July. Members are reminded that they are exempt from the requirement to desex the dogs owned by them and that renewing their DCMB Breeder Registration is only required if they have a litter of puppies for sale or will have during the 2021/2022 registration period. Membership with Dogs SA does not provide cats owned by them exemption from desexing. If you have cats and wish this exemption then you must be a member of either Feline Association of South Australia Inc or the governing council of the Cat Fancy of South Australia Inc Members can add their membership details to DACO as part of their dog registration renewal by selecting the Breeder Registration button > saying they are not a breeder > Saying they are a member of Dogs SA > entering their Dogs SA number. This will NOT add the breeder fee. Ensure your membership number is attached to your dog on DACO so the Council knows not to issue an expiration notice for not desexing. If a member is a registered breeder with DCMB and chooses not to renew their breeder registration for this financial year they can deselect the breeder registration check box. Their renewal code should stay open for the year if they choose this option and they can choose to renew their Breeder Registration Number (BRN) at any time during the financial year. If breeders are considering to breed later in the year they can renew their breeder registration when they have puppies for sale. Valid breeder registration provides desexing exemptions for both dogs and cats. Renewals will start to hit the post, email and SMS depending on which option you have selected during the first week in July so do not panic on July 1 if you have not received notification or paid the renewal. If you have not received your renewal by Friday 09 July log onto DACO to confirm your details if able or speak with your local Council for assistance. You have until 31 August 2021 to pay the registration renewal. There are significant penalties for noncompliance of registration and for those with business licenses if you do not pay the renewal the expiration notice is per dog and not per license so it can become extremely expensive. Ch Wingrove Enchantress Posy qualified for her Ch title at the age of eight months after only two months of showing. This included Puppy and Junior in Group placings and Best in Show at the SA Tenterfield Terrier Specialty Show as well as Runner up in Show at the Qld Specialty Open Show against 43 entries. She has accrued over 450 points in 10 months. At 10 3/4 inches she is true to the standard. Her beautiful nature makes her a pleasure to campaign.

Mrs Margaret Bush OAM She would randomly assist of an early morning to make the sandwiches in the canteen as it was something she enjoyed doing. When the manager retired and the canteen became a paid position, she continued to volunteer her time along with working on club fundraising days for all of the above clubs in the canteen. At a time of need when the paid position was vacated, she stepped up and volunteered her service to keep the canteen running and get it back to where it needed to be. Over 10 years later she is still there. For a 2 day show she spends many hours before ordering and sourcing specials to avoid purchasing at a premium and she collects all stock herself at her own cost to avoid the association delivery fees and ensuring the profit margins are as high as possible. She also provides a service to clubs to serve the judges lunches, which has a great profit margin for the association.

The Australian honours system celebrates the outstanding achievements and contributions of extraordinary Australians in a diverse range of fields and areas of endeavour. It's about recognising those people in the community whose service and contributions have had the effect of making a significant difference to Australian life or, more broadly, to humanity at large. This year marks 22 years since Margaret Bush Started as Dogs SA canteen volunteer. From 1999 she began volunteering & then in 2006 took over as volunteer canteen manager. Margaret has been a committee member of the GSP Club of SA, Hungarian Vizsla club of SA, Gundog club of SA, Pug Club of SA, Dalmatian Club of SA. She has volunteered at Glenside hospital as nurses aid & lavender lady. Woodville Primary canteen in the 60’s. Mt Carmel canteen weekly from 1981 to 1984, St Dominic’s canteen weekly from 1985 to 2002, St Francis De Sales Mt Barker canteen monthly from 2000 to 2002. Sold bingo tickets to raise funds for various horse associations on a weekly basis at local shopping centres. Margaret was also the catering manager at SA Dressage Association for 20 years running their canteen & outside catering for other events with their catering van. Committee member & life member of a Metropolitan Zone Pony Club & West Wind Woodville pony club where she did camp catering & weekly rally catering.

At 85 years of age she would still easily give in excess of 35 hours a week voluntarily to Dogs SA in order to organise/run a 2 day show. She steps up and organises catering for Dogs SA AGM’s and Judges training evenings when asked and caters for breed specialty and national shows opening the canteen when requested. Margaret Bush is more than worthy of this distinguished award. At the Dogs SA Winter International Show 2/6/19 Margaret was presented with her Premiers Certificate for Recognition for Outstanding Volunteer Service. A post was put on Facebook which currently 4/6/19 has 355 likes and 170 comments of congratulations. This number keeps growing hour by hour. This proves how much she is appreciated by exhibitors of the dog showing community for her hard work time and effort. She was nominated in 2019 for a Distinguished Service Award with Dogs SA for her role which requires a considerable degree of personal endeavour, involvement and dedication.

Margaret Bush joined Dogs SA in 1998 when she purchased her first pedigree dog, a Hungarian Vizsla. She joined the Hungarian Vizsla Club of SA and soon after joined the German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) Club of SA, despite not yet owning a GSP, but it didn’t take long and she fell in love with the breed. She was also co-opted on to the Gundog Club of SA and served on all 3 committees for several years, especially the GSP Club where she spent over 10 years. She has been an avid fundraiser for any club she has been involved in whether it be selling bingo tickets, chocolates, raffles, organising catering for events, wine raffles etc. She was a member of the Dalmatian Club of SA for a few years and with her expertise from assisting with the running of 2 successful GSP nationals in SA helped do the same for the Dalmatian Club. Most recently, she became a committee member of the Pug Club of SA. July 2021

Phew, what a month it’s been! To begin with the AAC wishes to highlight that we have another two new Agility Champions: Barb Moore and Gauis, and Lindsay Newton and Albajail Feel the Rush (Bella). Big congratulations to these two fabulous teams, who are so deserving of this award. Now to a wrap-up of the SA State Agility Championships held over the June long weekend. And with her permission, we start by sharing Sharon Taylor’s Facebook post because it captures so much of what the AAC organising committee was striving to achieve:

In fact we received more items than we had expected, enabling us to give out additional prizes to placegetters in some classes – primarily to novice and excellent competitors in line with sponsors’ interests. Jenny Barnes Photography was our ofﬁcial photographer – a great effort whilst also running her own dog! Massive thanks to so very many people without whom there would be no State Champs: ) our judges: for your awesome, thoughtful courses and the positive approaches you brought to your roles, and additionally to Karen and Tenielle for travelling to SA ) stewards: for your efﬁcient yet engaging, encouraging attitudes ) those competitors and others who pitched in on Friday and during the event to set up, change courses and pack away - you all seriously rock ) many others behind the scenes, especially those that have rightly been applauded in the back room - Roz, Nadege, Chloe – for a phenomenal and often thankless job; and a special shout out to our partners and friends - Geoff Short for securing the coffee van (yet another highlight!) and Barry Lincoln for carting equipment to and fro from ADCSA, and much more; and colleagues and friends who have donated much time, energy and prizes in supporting the AAC and Munno Para crews – we can't thank you enough; apologies to those who we’ve missed.

The State Championship weekend was awesome! What I particularly loved about it was the positive vibes. The whole atmosphere was different. It wasn't about winning and losing. There was a feeling of celebrating the journey and relationship with our dogs. Touches like: The "celebrate your success" board for selﬁes allowing everyone to record achieving a goal whatever that may be Judges that were more than happy for us to reward our dog with a game on the way out of the ring Presentation where judges mentioned those that showed skill and sportsmanship even though not a pass Encouragement awards for those that showed promise and great attitude The Teams event Second chance draw The mesh around the rings reducing the stress and distractions for our dogs The reward tables near the rings I have recently lost 2 beautiful dogs from my life. I am grateful for the opportunity to spend time and celebrate milestones with Squizzy and keep our agility fun and rewarding. We only have our dogs for a short time and to them we are everything. Thank you to the AAC for a great event. Other initiatives included the Veterans event on Sunday – a great lunchtime spectacle recognising and applauding 13 returned dogs who still love to run agility. And three-legged Maggie was just one of many who brought tears to the eyes of many onlookers. The Juniors event attracted one competitor, and we look forward to reﬁning how this initiative can be engage more young competitors in the future. As has also been posted on social media, the AAC wish to acknowledge our partners, sponsors and the very many people who contributed to making this event not only possible, but a success. With 93 dogs entered and approximately 620 actual runs, sadly without our Victorian competitors due to Covid restrictions, this was still a BIG event! Huge thanks to Munno Para Obedience Dog Club for hosting - at temporary grounds and on top on a few weekends of various trials, incredible effort in organising, setting-up, catering (including 50 meals for judges and stewards etc), packing-up, and further cleaning up the next day; a super effort. Thanks also to the Agility Dog Club of SA for generously providing another set of agility equipment and barrier mesh, and being available to return it on a public holiday when most others were chilling out. And to Gawler Dog Training Club for loan of a Galican Hoop.

In an effort towards continual improvement, the AAC has taken a more systematic approach to the planning, management and review of the event this year. More detailed checklists, budgeting, itemising of prizes, etc. means whoever takes on next year’s State Champs will be much better prepared. We have also untaken a Zoom reﬂection meeting with our two interstate judges to capture their feedback on highlights, things that worked well and things that could be improved, insights to share from other states and judging appointments, and comments on the overall standard of our teams and possible implications for ongoing training. Local judges have similarly been asked to provide feedback via a survey. A summary of key ﬁndings and insights will be shared in the next journal article. Perhaps at the next States, competitors can be invited to provide feedback beyond social media comments – for now, one step at a time! Life is a process of continual learning and development, and as with dog training, its positive, respectful approaches that generate the best results! Our interstate judges concurred that a highlight was the happy, friendly atmosphere of the event. And for the AAC it was a highlight to see the enjoyment being had by so many - and especially the collegiality of support and encouragement amongst many competitors – something we feel sure will continue to grow! Congratulations to our SA Agility Champions for 2021 and to everyone who competed – we hope you all went away with some good moments to cherish, even if you didn’t get a quali, prize or trophy.

This is a non qualifying class for dogs who have gained a minimum of an Agility/ Jumping/Games Novice title. Dogs may enter any class/s up to and including the highest title class gained by that dog but shall not enter a higher class or any Open Classes. The exhibitor may nominate the dog’s Jump Height which shall not exceed the dog’s Heights Card. Veterans Class

This is a non qualifying class for dogs eight year of age and over who have gained a minimum of an Agility/Jumping/Games Novice title. The dog shall not enter in any other Agility, Jumping or Games class/s at that Trial. The dog shall only compete in the Novice Jumping class. The Exhibitor will nominate the dog’s Jump Height which shall be less than the dog’s Height Card. Where the Height Card is 200mm - one end of each Hurdle bar shall be set at 200mm and the other end must be on the ground.

Junior Handler Class

This is a non qualifying class for Junior Handlers who must be 7 years of age and under 18 years of age, having a current Membership with either the SACA or an $I¿OLDWH ZKR FRQGXFWV $JLOLW\ WUDLQLQJ Only Novice Courses will be used for the Junior Handler class/s. Rates as described in the ANKC Ltd Guide to Judges will apply. ANKC Ltd Jump and Table Heights will apply. This class may be conducted as a separate class and must be listed in the schedule.

NOT FOR COMPETITION (NFC) Runs 1.1.

NFC Categories Offered There are no separate classes, courses, or judges for NFC runs. NFC runs will be undertaken on the relevant competition course within the chosen class. A dog may participate in a NFC run in any class for which they meet or exceed the requirements. There are 4 different NFC categories: Standard NFC – A dog may be entered into any class and height for which the dog is normally eligible. Lower Height / Lower Class NFC – A dog may be entered into any class and/or height that is less than the dog’s current competition standard. The exception to this is a dog whose competition height is 200; it must run at 200. A dog cannot be entered in a class that it would not be ordinarily eligible for, or at a jump height higher than its competition height. Veterans – A dog may be entered into the Jumping Novice class and must compete at a jump height less than their competition jump height. This category is strictly for dogs 8 years of age or older, who are not competing in any other class at that trial. The dog must have gained a minimum of an Agility or Jumping Novice title. Junior Handlers – A dog may be entered into the Agility Novice and/or Jumping Novice class, to be run by a Junior Handler. Junior Handlers must be at least 7 years of age and under 18 years of age and possess D FXUUHQW PHPEHUVKLS ZLWK HLWKHU WKH 6$&$ RU DQ $I¿OLDWH ZKR FRQGXFWV Agility training.

NFC and Competition Class Eligibility $ 1)& UXQ LQ D VSHFL¿F FODVV UHSODFHV WKH GRJ¶V FRPSHWLWLRQ UXQ LQ WKH class for which it is normally eligible. An exception is made for a dog entered under the Junior Handler NFC category. A handler who elects to undertake a NFC run in either of the Agility Novice, Excellent, Masters, or Elite classes will be excluded from undertaking a competition run in any of those classes in that trial. However, the dog can compete in Jumping and/or any Open classes. Similarly, a dog may run NFC in a Jumping class and still be eligible for competitive runs in Agility classes. Open classes can be run as NFC. A dog entered in NFC in an Open class will not be excluded from competing in Novice, Excellent, Masters, or Elite in that trial. NFC runs will be deemed to be Non-Qualifying runs for the purposes of Annual Awards.

A Handler may decide on the day to change their entry to Standard NFC. A Handler must advise the Judge that they wish to convert to a NFC run in a particular class by the expiration of the time allocated for walking the course for that class. A Handler may not enter the ring for a competition run and then once in the ring change their mind and swap to NFC. A Competitor running NFC will only be given time in the ring up to the Standard Course Time (SCT). 7LPLQJ IRU 1)& UXQV ZLOO VWDUW ZKHQ WKH GRJ QHJRWLDWHV WKH ¿UVW obstacle, or as the dog or Handler triggers the timing device. In the FDVH RI PDQXDO WLPLQJ WKH WLPH ZLOO VWDUW ZKHQ WKH ¿UVW SDUW RI WKH GRJ¶V ERG\ FURVVHV WKH SODQH RI WKH ¿UVW REVWDFOH DWWHPSWHG The scribe should not record time or faults for an NFC run. NFC runs should be denoted on the scribe sheet with ‘NFC’ written next to the competitor number. The Handler may choose to repeat an already completed obstacle or sequence of obstacles in a NFC run. A Handler may not lift a dog onto equipment. 7KH 6FULEH LV WR LQGLFDWH WR WKH +DQGOHU WKDW WKHLU WLPH LV ¿QLVKHG at the end of the SCT for an NFC run. At the end of the SCT the Handler should promptly remove their dog from the ring. Under no circumstances is food to be used in the ring. This includes toys with food inside of them. The Handler may use a non-audible toy for rewarding in the ring. Toys must remain in control of the Handler at all times (i.e. must not be thrown or intentionally released). NFC runs must not cause distraction to other dogs - in other rings or dogs running before or after that run. The Handler must carry a lead and/or collar during the run. The Judge shall not judge the Handler for Faults or 5HIXVDOV XQOHVV DJUHHG XSRQ DW WKH -XGJH¶V EULH¿QJ The Judge shall ensure safety, good sportsmanship and fair treatment of the dog, and that the Handler is complying with the NFC rules whilst in the ring. Failure to follow these rules may result in the Judge disqualifying the Handler from further competition in that trial.

The entry will be placed at the end of the class and height nominated. If a separate height trial is being conducted where different courses are provided for different heights, the dog must run the course designed for that dog’s normal competition height, regardless of the jump height selected by the Handler. For example, a dog with a competition height of 500 which has been entered into Lower Height/Lower Class NFC at 400 must still compete on the 500 course, albeit with the jumps set to the 400 height.

Rationale: Agility Exhibitions are conducted for the purpose of testing a Handler and dog’s ability to successfully complete the standard/ challenges set by the Judge. However, at various times, a Handler may wish to train or reward their dog under competition conditions. Stories around 1%" *-Ɯ/" 4&1% All Breeds Dog Judge, ,%+ "4&+$1,+ Las Vegas In 2012 Sue and I ﬂew to San Francisco where I had been contracted to judge the Northern California Irish Wolfhound Specialty and two days for the Del Valley Kennel Club show in Pleasanton just outside of San Francisco. We were picked up by a committee member and taken to our motel. It was very basic and not a place you would want to stay for more than one night, no restaurant so no breakfast, I called an old friend Betty Anne Stenmark who was the show chair for the Del Valley Club and explained my position. Two hours later she called me back to say she had got two rooms at the Hilton for us and our traveling companions Wolfhound breeders Sarah Baker and Soile Gendle for the next 7 days. It made things a lot easier as all the other judges were staying there along with many of the Wolfhound exhibitors.and their dogs. I had three wonderful days judging, there were 57 rings going at the all-breed show. A couple of days after the show we ﬂew to Las Vegas to meet up with our daughter Karen and husband Shayne for a week in the sin city that’s when the fun started. A stretch limo picked us up and gave us a tour of the city sights complete with glasses of champagne to set the mood. After checking into the Casino New York New York on the strip, we had dinner and settled in for the evening. Later that night the ladies went to play the poker machines while me and Shayne decided on the roulette tables. I was dressed in a black shirt, black trousers and shoes, it was a quiet table until suddenly a large overweight Mexican stood one side of me at the table and his lady the other side they were shouting at each other across me and I was getting rather annoyed to say the least. The next thing my beer went over she was waving her arms around, the table went very quiet, I told the Mexican to control the women and he replied with a few profanities. I told him he should be very careful who he insults as he was in Vegas and you never know who you may meet. His whole demeanour changed when I reached into my pocket and gave him one of my funny business cards. His face went white he went from a grizzly bear to a Koala bear and he told the lady to go get Johny a beer he started to apologise trying to shake my hand I told him not to touch me. The table had stopped and the croupier and other people were just sitting watching the drama unfold. My new beer duly arrived and Fonsey, the Mexican, was still saying sorry I didn’t know who you were when he put a $100 chip down on the table next to me and took off. The croupier asked me what I had given the Mexican so I gave him one of my cards he couldn’t stop laughing. He told me the card would do the rounds in Vegas when he had a few beers with his mates later that night. Just goes to show sometimes a little bit of play acting can fool anyone even in Vegas.
