President’s Report During the month of May I had the great pleasure in presenting Mr Ray (Ash) Ashenden his achievement award for being inducted to the Australian National Kennel Council’s Retrieving Hall of Fame. Ray’s award was achieved in 2020, however due to COVID restrictions the presentation was cancelled on several occasions and was finally presented at the Grand Cru Estate Winery and attended by retrieving enthusiasts from around the country. When I listened to Jeff Patrick reading out Ray’s achievements in the field of Retrieving, I could fully understand why he was awarded this great honour from his peers. Going past just his achievements in the field, Ray is also an avid supporter of children’s charities and over the years has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of these charities. In just one event alone Ray raised over $64,000 by rafting down the Murray River collecting donations along the way. On behalf of Dogs SA Council, Members and Staff we congratulate Ray on his outstanding achievements. An update on the office administration which I know most are interested in. Council at the April meeting elected to continue Ann Farndell to act in the Executive Officer role for the time being with assistance from Cheryl Currie and Wolfgang Schnitzer and to have the office recruit an assistant Administration Officer on a casual basis to assist with the office administration. The recruitment has been ongoing and may be finalized by the time this Journal is distributed to members. Once a successful candidate has been selected, the membership will be informed as soon as possible by Facebook, Website and the Journal. In recent times there has been comments regarding the requirement to sign in to events being an invasion of privacy using the Government QR Code and that the Affiliate, Dogs SA and the individual could be prosecuted for failing to sign in. Dogs SA has been so lucky during this pandemic in that we have in the main been able to reduce the effects of the restrictions by being vigilant and abiding by the rules. Many members are in the high-risk category for contracting the virus and suffering the severe outcomes that could occur. For the sake of our members please continue to check in via the QR Code or manual sign in any time you visit Dogs SA or attend an event. Currently contact tracing is the only way we can reduce the effects of this virus. As always, I am always happy to meet with Affiliates to discuss any issues they may have or ways they believe may assist the Association in presenting itself to the general public. We as an organization have a lot to offer the general public in the activities we have to offer whether it be dog obedience, Dances with Dogs or other sporting activities. Let’s all work together to promote both pedigree dogs and dog sports as a whole. Have a lovely time and remember to keep both yourselves and your dogs warm and dry over the winter months. PART XIV OFFENCES A. GENERAL 9. Any Member of the SACA who engages in any action or conduct that is discreditable or injurious to those involved in the activities of the SACA shall be guilty of an offence. 10. Members shall at all times and in all forums (including at Dogs SA events, in dealings in wider forums including chat lists on the internet and in all other communications) conduct themselves in a manner respectful of the reputation of the ANKC Ltd and Dogs SA Members, Judges, workers and officials. 12. A Member, including an Affiliate Member, who fails to remove an electronic communication posted on any of, but not limited to, social networking sites, all and other electronic forms of communication, when requested by the Executive Officer or their representative, shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. 13. A Member who; (a) forges the signature of another Member or person on any document relating to the activities of the SACA; (b) provides false information on any official document relating to the activities of the SACA; shall be guilty of an offence. 14. A Member or Affiliate Member, when requested to provide information or documents, relating to the activities of the SACA, to Council or an Affiliate Member, unreasonably fails to do so without just cause, shall be guilty of an offence. 15. Where a Member or Affiliate Member, is indebted to the SACA or an Affiliate Member and that debt remains outstanding for more than sixty days after that date on which it was due that person or Affiliate Member may be guilty of an offence. 19. (a) No meeting of Council or the Committee of an Affiliate or any Sub committee of the Council may be held in a private home without the prior approval of Council. (b) Where a meeting is held in contravention of sub paragraph (a) of this Rule each Member of Council, the Committee of an Affiliate or the Sub Committee present at the meeting shall be guilty of an offence.

She finished her show career becoming a Neuter Grand Champion. Of her 67 Neuter in Group awards she went on to Neuter in Show 15 times and RU Neuter in Show 15 times. Congratulations are extended to Ray Ashenden on being inducted to the ANKC’s Retrieving & Field Trial Hall of Fame. This honour is bestowed upon exceptional persons who have made outstanding and significant contributions to the sports of Retrieving or Field Trials for an extended period of time. Ray’s trialling career spans 6 decades from the seventies to the twenties, and he has titled 6 Labrador dogs and bitches in Retrieving and Field. Ray began his trialling career in 1977 with “Pandell” with immediate success. His present dog is RT CH Nativerun Angus “Gus” has just turned three but has already won ten All Age stakes in several states. Ray, together with others, started RAFTCOSA in the late seventies, and he initiated the Meningie Cup, having found the property where the trial is still held to this day. Always the worker he organized marquees etc (and of course the liquid refreshments) for the trials there and for the Nationals that were run at Meningie in 1983 and 1986. Ray has always been a force behind Nationals held in SA, often working in the kitchen where his native dishes are legendary. Although living a long way from metropolitan Adelaide he chaired the National Committee for the 2008 National. As Ray has lived well away from Adelaide, he has not tied himself to any particular Club’s committee, but instead has worked for all. He has continued to find properties and the Labrador Club is thankful for him discovering the property at Morgan. He is also responsible for securing the property for the 2008 National and a number of other properties for field trials when they were held in SA in a bygone era. Ray has always been supportive of beginners. In the recent past he has travelled many kilometres to help out at training days. Ray is always the first to offer help at a trial. He has helped in many thankless tasks like digging toilet holes for all clubs. It can sometimes be embarrassingly difficult to stop him from going on the thrower once too often and insist another take his place. Even interstate he is often the first to volunteer.

AGILITY NEWS

It’s almost here! The 2021 State Agility Championships! Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th June. And we’re excited! So many people have been helping in different ways, and folks at the Munno Para Club have been wonderful in facilitating arrangements in holding the champs at the temporary grounds at Duncan Anderson Reserve, Elizabeth Vale. Special thanks to the Agility Dog Club of SA and various others in supplying additional equipment and barrier mesh. A big shout-out to all those who have offered to steward and to be on stand-by to help out on the day. We’ve also appreciated the collaborative spirit shown by competitors in managing entry payments in the absence of an EFT facility. Munno volunteers are catering and will have the BBQ cranked up. Negotiations are underway to have a Coffee Van on site each morning. Stay tuned for more details on Agility SA Facebook page!

We’re delighted to have an array of sponsors and prizes in addition to trophies and modest cash prizes. Munno are running a raffle and there are other activities in the pipeline to engage of those coming along. We look forward to welcoming you all to the event – and remind everyone to please sign in to be Covid-safe. This includes volunteers and competitors coming to set-up on Friday afternoon! On more mundane but equally important matters, your AAC has continued to progress efforts in finalising the Not for Competition (NFC) document rule however please be aware that this must go through the appropriate channels and until we advise the changes have been approved by Dogs SA Council, the rule currently in the Dogs SA rule book still applies. Feedback was received from the National Agility Committee addressing some of the queries raised in relation to the 2021 Agility Rules; these were communicated via Agility SA Facebook and with Judges. The most significant amendment was a change to the design of the spread hurdle; there has been no change regarding the 1 metre refusal rule, which continues to challenge judges. The AAC will continue to try to gain insight into the National Agility Committee’s decisions and clarification of the intent which may assist in the implementation of these rules. In the meantime, judges have taken up the challenge of designing and judging courses under the new criteria, enabling practical insights to emerge to inform ongoing discussion and development of guidelines. We’ve loved the feedback that the process of measuring of dogs is now much easier. In conjunction with judges, we are continuing efforts to make it even smoother and more efficient; the protocol has been updated and has been posted on Agility SA Facebook and website pages, and a schedule has been developed to better plan for and share the measuring of dogs across coming months. Three Agility Champions in One Day! How’s That! An extraordinary thing happened at the Munno Para trial on Sat 24th April: three dogs, three different ‘breeds’ and from three different height categories, were successful in gaining their Agility Champion titles. How amazing is that! And not only that, but there is a spread of ages and genders across the owners and handlers. All three teams have unique stories… that inspire us to get out there and enjoy agility with our canine buddies. Cleo (300 height), is owned by Linda Hedges and run by Victor Jordan. As Linda told us, ‘Cleo came into our lives end of 2012. I’ll never forget the day we went to meet and greet this tiny 9 week old rescue puppy we bonded instantly. She has such a great nature and temperament and took to both obedience and agility training. But agility was her thing… she loved contacts and often took a detour to them in training!’ Cleo started trialling when 2 1/2 years old, but we soon realised she had an anxiety issue when competing in the ring; ‘it took a lot of patience and work which eventually paid off’. As Linda went on to say, ‘Cleo has achieved many milestones and achievements but there are two special ones close to my heart. In 2019 she was equal winner of the Gwenda Baker Memorial Award. The other is winning the Excellent Strategic Pairs State Championship with her great mate Eddie. Heartfelt thanks go to Victor for taking on the challenge of running her for me.’ Kee (500 height) is the canine companion and agility partner of Andrew Butler. They are excitement personified - with a unique handling style, when watching this team tackle an agility course you have their heart in your mouth! Kee is a beautiful 4 ½ year old Kelpie who came from a cattle farm at Millicent, and took to agility with enthusiasm. Kee and Andrew were SA Agility’s Top Team in 2018 and won several other Dogs SA awards in 2018 and 2019, and state championship events. Andrew’s passion for his dog is captured in his simple comment ‘I just love running with my dog…’. They are both super-fit, spending a lot of time at the beach and running/bike riding through the Hills (Kee runs, Andrew rides!). Kee loves kayaking, and the paddle board and boogie board - ‘she’s a full on swimmer and comes out in the surf with me. We do lots of tricks training too, and she’s also a handy stock dog on sheep. And as she loves car rides, she’s in the car whenever we go out!’

Redshift Hot Asha (600 height), better known as Asha to her friends, joined Michelle Chapman’s family in May 2015, and ‘it was a delight to have such an outgoing, friendly and confident puppy’. Asha, a doberman, began her agility career in April 2017 gaining both Novice Jumping and Agility by June that same year. Within 18 months she had managed to qualify for both her ADM and JDM titles. Highlights of her career include 4 titles in one weekend in Mt Gambier gaining ADX, JDX, ADO and JDO , third place at the National Championships in Novice Snooker against 157 dogs of all heights, and several State Champion titles and Dogs SA awards over 3 consecutive years. Early in 2020 Asha was struck with a severe flesh eating bacterial infection that was very nearly fatal. After surgery and 6 months of 24/7 care Asha was able to start running again. I am so thankful to have her back – and it’s icing on the cake to be able to achieve her AgCh. How inspirational are these stories; rescue dogs and pure breds, whatever approach you may use, through trials and tribulations, with tenacity, love and passion, it’s possible to have success - even if it’s not at AgCh level! But best of all, these dogs are all, first and foremost, loved family members. DogsSA combined Dances with Dogs and Tricks State Championship held on 10th and 11th April, 2021 was an Australian first!

Despite the spectre of COVID19 threatening viability of interstate judges attending, we were fortunate to welcome two from Queensland and one from Victoria. Barb Murfet and Coral Pethers (Q) who were both key players in getting DWD and Tricks started in Australia, judged both disciplines on both days. Sue Cordwell, a leading light in DWD in Victoria, joined them in judging DWD. On Sat 10th, a doubler-header of two DWD Competitions (morning and afternoon) attracted an entry of 56 for the day across the two divisions – Heelwork to Music and Free-style The inaugural perpetual State Championship Trophy for Highest DWD score on the day, across both divisions of the two competitions, sponsored by major sponsor, URBAN PET FOODS, was won by Victorians Jeanette Wilson and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Steven, performing to the music “Happy Together”. To acknowledge and encourage competitors to incorporate those unique elements of DWD in their routines which enhance presentation and entertainment, two local experts in musical theatre and dance, adjudicated for Special Awards. Alana Coleman and Kym McDougall of Alana’s Dance Studio. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required. 2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16) 3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce. 4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases. 5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime. (01/20) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20) 6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. 7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19) 8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health. 9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12) 10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/ or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. 11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. Stories around the campfire with All Breeds Dog Judge, John Lewington Colorado Springs

One year, during a judging trip to America, Sue and I hired a car in Milwaukee after staying with Wolfhound friends Mike and Charlene Dewald and drove for two days down to Denver Colorado to stay with another Wolfhound friend Jude York. I had been to Denver many times and got to know the City very well. During the week Jude lent us her car and we visited Red Rocks a beautiful natural amphitheatre carved out of rocks about 15 miles from Denver in the Rockies. It was a favorite place for international rock bands and they told me you could hear the music in Denver on a clear night. While in Colorado we were invited to go and watch the lure coursing in Colorado Springs an hour’s drive away. The site for the trial was on the outskirts of town and was a large open plain with not a tree or bush in sight. When we arrived, there were a lot of cars /trucks, a marshalling tent and portable toilets it was well set up. The trial was for sighthounds only and there were a good number of Irish wolfhounds there along with whippets, ridgebacks, borzoi, basenjis. greyhounds, salukis and deerhounds. After lunch Sue and I were watching one of the trials when we heard a lot of shouting looking around we could see that a large truck had backed into one of the portable toilets and had knocked it over with the door on the ground. From the noise coming out of the toilet whoever was stuck inside was not very happy it was a very heavy thing and several men had to put a rope on it to pull it upright. As they stood it up a rather large man with his trousers down round his ankles fell out onto the ground looking like he was covered in chocolate, not a pretty sight. He was quickly wrapped in a blanket still screaming and shouting and was taken off to someone’s home for a shower and change of clothes. I guess it was funny to us and all the other people but I often wonder if that poor man ever went to another lure coursing trial.
