President’s Report

February has been a busy month for Dogs SA with the Dogs SA Council Elections, practical examinations for conformation judge. Many disciplines and clubs are now getting back to some form of normality with the ever-present COVID 19 pandemic. As of 1 January, we have new ANKC Rules in place for Agility, Obedience and Rally trials. The Obedience and Agility Advisory Committees have both held information sessions for Judges and competitors to discuss changes from the previous Rules and to address issues arising from those changes. I was invited out to the first training day of the Adelaide Plains Kennel and Obedience Club at their new grounds at the Clara Harniman Reserve located on the corner of Boundary Road and the Gawler Two Wells Road. The grounds although a little rudimentary at moment, the club has put in a lot of work over the last year to get it going and will be a great ground once established. Their AGM is scheduled for 10 March 2021 for all those who would like to attend or just see the grounds. I would also like to congratulate those who were successful at the recent Dogs SA Council elections. Firstly, Peter Thompson who has been elected as Vice President after serving for the last 6 years as a Councilor. We also have two new Councilors Caroline Murphy and Ben Luxton. Welcome aboard to both and I look forward to working with you. Two Councilors were returned, Sheryle Pike and Peter Dynan. Peter, as most would know has been the Vice President for the past 11 years. We do however have to say goodbye to two of our existing Councilors who did not wish to recontest the election for personal reasons. Firstly, Greg Harvey who served on Council for 6 years and Rae Hedger who has served on Council since 1997. Rae was also granted life membership in 2018 for her service to the Association and will be missed on Council. Again, I congratulate all those for their success and look forward to a bright future for Dogs SA. The Conformation Judges Training Panel completed Practical examinations in February. Congratulations to all those who elevated to either Championship or trainee status. Again, we had an impressive pass rate of approximately 75%. This can be attributed to the dedication of the trainers and trainees alike. Conformation Judges Training takes many years of dedication too finally qualify as an All Breeds Judge which is what most trainees aspire to be. Thank you to Marie Merchant and her dedicated group leaders and their assistants for their work throughout the year. On behalf of Marie and her team and all those who sat their exam we thank all the exhibitors who came out on the day to assist with the running of the exams. As many are aware there is a state election looming in South Australia and is due by mid March 2022. We have already seen politicians making promises about cleaning up the puppy farm and commercial breeders. This is the same rhetoric we had to fight against in 2017 when the then Government attempted to bring in legislation similar to that which was introduced in Victoria. As with 2017 I will again be meeting with the DCMB and members of parliament to pressure our case to have some form of recognition and autonomy. To beat this, we again must fight together and let our local members know how we as reputable Dogs SA members can be trusted to have self-regulation. As our local elections have now been declared we will be moving forward with breeder inspections. These inspections are not designed to come down on our breeders but to assist them in assuring they are meeting the South Australian Standards and Guidelines for the breeding and trading in companion animals. ANKC Regulations Part 5 has been amended as follows: Items 5.8 - by the inclusion of an additional Clause, numbered 8.1.4, to read: 8.1.4 A dog cannot be entered in the name of a deceased person once the administration of that person’s estate has been finalised. [Note: Dogs NSW drafted their original submission for the February 2020 Special Board meeting prior to the final submission from the Regulations Part 5 Review Working Party being endorsed which was a complete review of the regulations. As a result the new clause has been added as Clause 11.1.7 and the current 11.1.7 and 11.1.8 has been renumbered accordingly.] Item 7.5.7 - Clause 1.1.7 be amended to read: SECTION 1 – DEFINITIONS and CLASSES 1.1 Definitions 1.1.7 Proprietary Interest – having some legal or equitable interest in an animal on an on-going basis. For the purposes of these Regulations the definition does not include boarding a dog at a Judge’s boarding kennel. Item 7.5.8 – Clause 3.2.5 be amended to read: “I undertake to abide by the Rules and Regulations of the ANKC Ltd and judge to its approved Breed Standards/ Regulations/Rules and any member body regulations applicable to this assignment. I declare all information on this form is correct and if circumstances make the information inaccurate, I undertake to inform the ANKC Ltd forthwith. I also declare I am physically fit and capable of judging in the normally accepted manner. I acknowledge this is a continuing obligation and I undertake to notify the contracting affiliate should my health status impact upon my ability to judge in the normally accepted manner.” The updated regulations are now available from ANKC website.

AGILITY NEWS The Agility Advisory Committee AGM Continuation meeting was held on 21st January, chaired by Brian Fielder, the interim 2021 Chairperson.

Forty six members came to the initial AGM meeting in November, with 56 members in attendance at the January meeting along with another 14 people on Zoom; it’s terriﬁc to see so many people able to get along and vote for your new AAC - or take an interest via Zoom (a step towards greater inclusion, with thanks to technical support from Executive Ofﬁcer, Roz Becker). And it was most encouraging to have a Council nominee and representatives also in attendance.

The new Agility Rules came into effect on January 2021. Under the chairpersonship of Brian Fielder, the AAC and a Judges Panel have prepared a Summary of Rule Changes and a Guideline for the Not For Competition (NFC) category of participation in trials. When ﬁnalised, after consultation meetings with both judges and competitors, it is intended that these will be available on the DogsSA and Agility SA websites for easy access to anyone who seeks them. A ‘living document’ Guideline is also being developed to assist SA judges in designing Elite agility and jumping courses; the aim of this document is to build consistency in an understanding of graded challenges across the noviceexcellent-masters-elite continuum. This Guideline will also assist clubs and others to provide appropriate training to members, and will support judges training initiatives. It is expected to take some months to build capacity to safely and successfully introduce Elite level classes in SA.

Ten members stood for nomination with the six successful candidates identiﬁed in the photo below. We expressly thank those who stood for nomination and were unsuccessful – it takes time and commitment to nominate, and as the written bios and short spiels on the night illustrated, offers the community options. Importantly, there was a strong theme across all speeches of a need to work collaboratively, with transparency, to build up agility as a safe, engaging sport for both fun and competition – and the new Committee takes this to heart.

As was conveyed during the January meeting, the AAC is comprised of volunteers who undertake a wide range of activities on behalf of the agility community in SA, some of which were outlined in the 2020 AAC Annual Report which was published in the February edition! And in 2021, there are more initiatives on the way – look out for regular updates each month in the DogsSA magazine as well as on the Agility Facebook and websites. We are aiming to improve communication and promote wider participation of members in the development of agility in our ﬁne state. Also at the AGM Continuation meeting, we had hoped to be able to make a special presentation to Peter Dynan (previous AAC chair) to acknowledge his very considerable contribution to the administration of agility in SA for around 20 years, most notably as Chairperson of the AAC. Peter was also a long-standing chairperson of the National Agility Advisory Committee; and is currently the SA representative on the ANKC Agility Advisory Committee. On behalf of the agility community, a gift will be passed onto him in recognition of his signiﬁcant involvement and contribution, March 2021

Kangal Shepherd Dog/ Anatolian Shepherd Dog Clause 6.3.4.9 - The status quo will remain where there will be two breeds with the Anatolian Shepherd Dog using the current Anatolian Shepherd Dog breed standard and the Kangal Shepherd Dog using the FCI Kangal Shepherd Dog breed standard. Owners may transfer the affected dogs from one breed to the other up until the 30 June 2021.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required. 2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16) 3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce. 4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases. 5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime. (01/20) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20) 6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. 7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19) 8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health. 9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12) 10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/ or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. 11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. Newcastle is on the east coast in New South Wales a few hours’ drive north of Sydney. The club informed me I would be Judging with another South Australian Judge, Birgit Ferguson one of Australia’s top Afghan breeders. We had chatted at ringside during the hound judging at many shows in South Australia but had never had the opportunity to judge together. On arrival in Sydney, we had a two hour wait for our connecting flight. After a couple of beers in the bar we boarded the 18-seat propeller plane to Newcastle. The flight was a bit bumpy but not too bad and the view across the mountains was quite spectacular. 40 minutes later we landed and were met by the club show manager and taken to our Motel that was situated on the shore of Lake Macquarie. On Friday, the show started at 2pm and finished about 8pm. We then had dinner with the other judges and the committee in the club rooms and rounded off a very laid-back relaxing day. On Saturday, on completion of my Judging, I caught up with friends Kim Gunther and Michael Milne who had brought along two of our Kodi pups for me to see. They are both still alive at over eleven years of age. On Sunday I had an easy day judging terriers and the terrier group. A stretch limo arrived just after lunch to take us back to the airport. I had seen the black clouds coming in as we left the showgrounds but did not take too much notice. I asked the young man who was driving the limo if it was his own business and he said yes and that he had taken many well-known and famous people in his car to various places. I told him he could now say that he had Johny Lewington in the car, he was quiet for a moment and then said “Johny who?”. I said surely you have heard of me from TV and he apologised and said he didn’t recognise me the poor bloke didn’t realise I was winding him up. When we arrived at the airport, he was getting our bags out of the boot, I said to him that I cannot understand where the TV

cameras were, as they knew we were going to be here, poor Birgit seemed very embarrassed about it all. When we checked in we were asked if we would like to sit together I said we are not married, Birgit looked at me and said I would not marry you the young lady at the desk looked very embarrassed. As the plane took off the clouds were black the wind had picked up and as we gained height the aircraft started to get blown around all over the place. The pilot was trying to go round the storm but not having much luck. A couple of times I thought we were going down; Birgit was terrified, and passengers were getting thrown about all over the place. The 45-minute journey took nearly an hour and a half but we did eventually arrive at Sydney Airport. It was straight to the bar for a stiff drink and thank our lucky stars we were still alive. I settled down with a pint and Birgit went for a wander. Half an hour later she came running in the bar to tell me our flight was boarding, and we were in the wrong departure lounge - we were flying Qantas not Virgin. We made it by the skin of our teeth. As we went through the gate a very old man told Birgit he was terrified of flying, she told him nothing to worry about after what we have just been through, I just looked at him and said take no notice of her I don’t know who she is she just keeps following me all over the airport. Poor Birgit will she ever forgive me. The 2-hour flight was uneventful, and I was home by 9 pm. Birgit assured me that was the very last time she would be going in a small plane and told Sue that she would never go away judging with me again but I think she was joking, it was a fun trip. You never know what will happen when you go away judging.
