President’s Report Welcome all and I trust everyone had a lovely Easter break. Easter is again one of the Association’s big weekends with Conformation shows both North and South at Port Pirie and Mount Gambier. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who travelled to our country events as they are just as important as any of the Adelaide events. Dogs SA Council is currently consulting with the Office staff on the best ways forward to manage the day to day functions of the Association including what the structure of the administration should be. Once the outcomes are known the structure will be relayed to the members via the Journal and Dogs SA Web page. There are several changes effecting this review including the possibility of a new ANKC database which will be intuitive to the member needs by allowing them to do more online and with direct electronic funds transfer. As COVID is still amongst us there were appropriate changes made to some of our major events. I would trust that members will appreciate the work being put in to continue hosting these events and will support them. Some of these include the Winter International which for this year will be the Advance Winter Festival and the Adelaide Royal Show, both of which will be required to use interstate judges in place of the usual international panels. Also the Festival of Dogs which was cancelled in 2020 has now been scheduled for October 2021. The replacement of the current Dogs SA Web Site with a friendlier version and one with both a members and public area is underway. It is hoped this will allow Council and the office to disseminate information to the members quicker and clearer. We are also investigating the possibility of electronic voting for the coming election of President and five councillors. This will need a constitutional change as the way the elections are currently conducted is very prescriptive in the constitution. We will keep members informed on both of these matters as they progress. Thoughts on the electronic process would be appreciated. Hard copy voting will still be available for those not able to vote electronically. The Conformation Judges Training Panel conducted a very successful practical handling day on Sunday 18 April which took on a different slant from the usual where new exhibitors were being encouraged to attend along with the more seasoned ones. Apart from the normal hands on for the trainees there was also a handler class conducted by Hollie Clarke, an explanation on the conduct of how shows are conducted for those new exhibitors by Ruth Thompson and a nutritional stand hosted by Anne Raymond and Advance pet food. The day was a great success and thanks to Marie Merchant and the group leaders with the aid of Jeffery Binding in setting up. It shows that events can be done differently and be a success. Just in closing I would like to show my appreciation to the Dogs SA office for getting back on top of work after recent events. It is a tribute to their work efforts in being able to get the job done (with a little assistance from Wolfgang who has been helping out) and catching up on what was a bit of a back log. Thanks to all of you. Brian Parker President DOGS SA Mob: 0417 724 223 Page 3

COVER STORY

Statement from Dogs SA Council As members will be aware, we find ourselves in the position where we need to recruit a new Executive Officer. Council has decided to use this as an opportunity to review and refresh the structure of our office staffing base. We have arranged a meeting with our office staff to discuss and develop a new structure to reflect the changing demands of our operations so that we can provide the necessary support for them to provide the best possible service to our members. To assist in this transition, Wolfgang has kindly offered to return temporarily, on a part time basis, to assist in managing the workload. An Office Assistant will also be employed on a casual basis to assist current office staff and an Expression of Interest will shortly be called across the membership to fill this role. Once we have finalised the new structure, we will commence the recruitment process for an Executive Officer.

DOGS SA POLICIES FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS AT DAVID ROCHE PARK • Any person is permitted to take photographs on the grounds providing they are not selling such photographs • Any person who intends to take photographs on the grounds for renumeration must supply proof of Public Liability Insurance to the office • Any person who intends to have a site on the grounds for either displaying and or the taking of photographs must pay the appropriate site fee • Clubs who engage a photographer to take photographs on their behalf have the right to make that photographer exclusive for their event and no other photographers are then permitted to operate during that Clubs event/s.

PUBLIC APOLOGY It was brought to Council’s attention that several inaccurate, misleading, and damaging comments were made on Social Media by the late Mr Keven Harris, as well as some members of our own canine community in September 2020, following the completion of the recruitment process to appoint a Dogs SA’s Executive Officer. These comments have remained in the public domain unchallenged without Council refuting any factual errors in the comments. Council recognises that the public nature of these comments was potentially damaging to Ms Carius and called her ethics and integrity into question and therefore Council would like to correct these inaccuracies. Council can assure members that Ms Carius was not engaged as a Consultant for the purpose of the recruitment, and aside from Council paying for her flights she was not remunerated for her services. Ms Carius was a voluntary participant on the interview panel at the request of council based on her extensive skills, background and experience in Human Resource, Industrial Relations and the very nature of our sport. Council regrets that it did not publicly address the comments in a timelier manner and is apologetic for any reputational damage, distress, inconvenience, or offence that this situation may have caused to Ms Carius. Council extends the following public apology to Ms Ainslie Carius that the inaccurate and disparaging remarks were not refuted at the time. Council sincerely thanks Ms Carius for her willingness to participate in the panel and valued her knowledge, expertise and contribution to the process.

Gawler Kennel Club Inc Championship Show 25/4/21

AGILITY NEWS The State Champs are rapidly approaching! Lots has been happening in coordinating preparations for these, and we are especially grateful to the team at Munno Para for assisting in managing the change of venue. The new venue is: Duncan Anderson Reserve, Trimmer Road, Elizabeth Vale. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this change but it was unavoidable due to works being conducted at Munno Para’s permanent grounds. Note: Gates will open to competitors and others at 12.00 midday on Friday 11th for those wanting to set up gazebos. On arrival, please check at the Office for instructions and Covid sign-in. We shall also be seeking assistance in setting up rings. We’re delighted to introduce two prominent interstate judges as part of the judging team; should be exciting - reckon we’ll need to get our skates on!

Other AAC News in Brief: Progress is continuing on development of the guidelines to support implementation of the 2021 ANKC Agility Rules in SA, particularly around the introduction of the Elite Class. Clarifications are being sought from ANKC on some points. It is intended that these will be discussed with judges and clubs before finalising. The Committee has also initiated work on developing a series of guides to assist competitors, both existing and aspiring, to help them along their journey. The new guides cover a range of

Tenielle Thwaites

aspects and have been given the working titles of: • Agility: I want to trial… what do I do now? • Agility: What to do at your first trial • Agility: Trial etiquette – ensuring trials are enjoyable for everyone These and other Guides will be available on the Agility SA facebook page and website as well as the DogsSA website as soon as they are finalised. Michelle Chapman and others have contributed to the research, drafting and development of these resources. The Dog Measuring and Height Card Protocol has also been updated. Please note that Vanessa Loughlin has taken over as the primary contact. Members seeking to have their dogs measured should now contact Vanessa by email at vanessaloughlin@optusnet.com.au. Other tasks we have in the pipeline, also with assistance from community members, are: • Preparing Agility equipment safety guidelines and checklists • Developing prototypes for weighted sandbags to use as stabilisers for wing jump uprights • Updating our timing gear and the battery recharging process. So, as you can see, we have been and continue to be pretty busy and we’re making some significant progress in addressing needs identified in last year’s survey. More on other developments next month!

Karen Phillips

I have recently moved to Orange, NSW with my husband, son and three dogs. I have a cavalier cross (13 years), border collie (10 years) and kelpie (3 years). I have not long retired my two older dogs and I am looking forward to starting trialling with my Kelpie this year. I was introduced to agility in 2007 when I took my first puppy to the local dog training club to teach her basic manners and obedience. While I was there I noticed agility training happening and thought it might be fun for us to play together. It didn’t take long for us to get bitten by the agility bug and we started trialling when she turned 18 months in 2008. My passion for agility has only grown since then. I wanted to give back to the sport that I love so became a judge at the end of 2015. I have judged in New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory and Western Australia. I love the challenges that different appointments bring, from judging at a state title event to judging at a small country trial. I learn and evolve as a judge with every opportunity. I try to keep up-to-date by attending handling and judges training seminars when available. There are so many aspects to judging that appeal to me. I enjoy designing courses that are challenging, fast and flowing. It is really exciting to watch dog and handler teams attack my courses and seeing the different handling options that they choose. I am looking forward to judging at the South Australian State Titles in June 2021; it will be my first judging appointment in SA. Good luck to all competitors and I hope that everyone has a great time as I’m sure that I will.

I live in Perth Western Australia and first got involved in obedience and agility in 1997 with my two border collies Murphy & Soda-Pop. Over the years I have competed all around Australia including all of the National Agility Trials held to date. In 2012 & 2013 I had the opportunity to go to Europe and compete at the World Agility Open with borrowed dogs as part of Team Australia. This gave me the first taste of running on international courses! In 2015 I became an agility judge. I am constantly inspired by the open and flowing courses that are designed in Europe and they are my favourite type of course to run. I have been fortunate enough to develop my course design under the guidance of Jan Eigl Eide and Tamas Traj, two of the most popular judges in Europe. They have taught me the importance of the dog’s line, creating flow for the dog while incorporating technical elements to challenge dog and handler. I get a huge thrill watching dog and handler teams fly around my courses with big smiles on their faces. Over the last few years, I have been fortunate to judge in Brisbane and Singapore. Unfortunately COVID prevented me from judging in NSW & Victoria last year. Thankfully things are looking up on the COVID front and I’m very excited to travel to Adelaide to judge at the South Australian State Agility Trial!

Agility:

What to do at your first trial

It is highly recommended that you attend a trial as a spectator prior to your first competitive trial; even better consider volunteering as a helper/steward. This will really help you to familiarise yourself with all the processes and procedures that occur on the day and is a good opportunity to learn. Also, familiarise yourself again with the Rules! Especially the Agility Rules and the Safety Guidelines (see Agility: I want to go trialling – what do I do now, 2021). 1.

Prepare a list of all the things you will need. We recommend a crate or stay peg for your dog, chair, flat collar (no dangly bits) and leash, water and water bowl, toys and/or treats for your dog and yourself, poo bags, good running shoes, dog’s height card, desex card (if not listed on height card, female dogs only), an elastic armband or safety pin to attach your number. Catering is usually available at all trials but please check with the schedule.

2.

Plan to arrive early. We recommend a minimum of 1.5 hours before the scheduled start and preferably even earlier than this to allow plenty of time to set up, familiarise yourself with the venue, check in, help build the courses, walk your course, warm up and toilet your dog. Try to choose a shady location close to friends or fellow club members. Many competitors choose to bring tents or gazebos but this isn’t essential. Make sure you allow a minimum of a 5m clearance to any ring. As a volunteer-managed sport, there is an expectation that competitors will help in setting up rings and courses, and/ or help in packing them away at the end of the day. Please allow some time for this! It’s easy to see what is going on but ask those who may already be helping how you can assist. Tell them it’s your first trial - it’s a good way to meet people and garner support.

3.

The schedule will list the vetting/check in time and this will be announced at the time. Present yourself at check in with your height card. You will be given a number which you will need to wear during the trial, either pinned to your top or inside a number holder/arm band; it can also be on the dog’s lead. At some trials your dog may be allocated more than one number for different events on a single day. Be sure to check that you have the correct number visible when you enter the ring. Only entire female dogs will need to be ‘vetted’; a bitch in season is not allowed to compete.

4.

The schedule lists the order of events and the catalogue will list the running order. A novice class will usually be first in one of the rings. Familiarise yourself with what is happening in each ring and listen/look out for when your course is ready for walking. If you are unsure please ask a ring steward to clarify. Also check the catalogue to know which height is running first; if you have a 600 dog or a 200 or 300 dog, you may be the first dog called to run.

5.

Course walking. You will be allowed a reasonable amount of time to walk your course (a minimum of 10 minutes); if entry numbers are high there may be split walking (more than one course walk). If there is split walking please ensure you listen to the instruction given by the judge or ring steward as to which walking group you belong to and how the walks will occur. Only the handler may walk the course except with the permission of the Judge. Please wear suitable closed in footwear and secure your number either by safety pin to your top or in an armband. Do not bring any food, drink, treats or toys into the ring with you at any time. Also when walking the course you cannot bring your dog with you. Do not touch or alter any equipment without prior approval from the judge. During your course walking time the judge will call a competitors’ briefing where they will explain what they expect from you and provide an opportunity for any questions or concerns you may have. Take time to plan your course and how you will handle your run. The judge will then signal the end of course walk and soon after will call for the first dog.

6.

Warm up your dog, and yourself. It is important that you warm your dog up before their run (see articles on what this entails, e.g. April 2021 DogsSA Journal). If you are on early in the draw, you will need to do this before walking the course. Also make sure your dog has ample opportunity to toilet before entering the ring. Any fouling in the ring will result in immediate disqualification and you will not be able to finish your run. Remember that your dog must have a flat fixed collar with no dangly attachments. And ensure all treats and toys are left 5m away from the ring.

May 2021

Page 15

Do your own stretches and warming up; and do any calming techniques to help reduce nerves to a favourable level. This will help your dog too but there may be other things you can do to help your dog to be at their optimum level of arousal on entering the ring. 7.

Listen for your name or number to be called. Please be ready 2-3 dogs before your turn and let the steward know you are ready. This helps keep things running smoothly. Some competitors may need to run out of order due to clashes with runs in other rings so you may be required to run sooner or later than you’re expecting. If for any reason you can’t get to your ring on time you must inform the steward or you may be disqualified if you don’t present yourself by the 3rd call. While waiting in line, try to stay calm - keep the focus on you and your dog, and how you want to handle the course. Give other people and dogs space.

8.

Your dog must be on leash when you enter the ring. When called by the steward, enter the ring with your dog and set your dog up near the first obstacle wherever it suits you best. When you are happy that you and your dog are ready, remove the leash and/or collar and pass it to the steward. Please note: currently due to Covid restrictions this step has changed. You must secure your leash on your person, either around your waist, shoulder or in your pocket. Please take care with this and practice beforehand; if your leash becomes dislodged and falls to the ground during your run, you will be disqualified. The judge will ask if you are ready or indicate you can start when you are ready; please acknowledge the judge in some way, this can be verbally, by a head nod or wave. At this time you can no longer touch your dog. You may now begin your run. If you commence running prior to the judge’s direction you can be disqualified or asked to restart your run. If you lead out past the first obstacle you cannot return back over the start line, unless the dog runs around or ducks under (refuses) that obstacle. Going back will otherwise result in a disqualification.

9.

Start your run! Be positive and have fun. Use the techniques (verbal and non-verbal) that you have trained in practice; this will help keep your dog confident and focused. Keep your voice calm and encouraging; no harsh reprimands (which shall incur a penalty). Nerves aside, this should be enjoyable for both you and your dog! If your dog is overly anxious or shuts down during the run, consider withdrawing. You may do more harm than good by continuing if your dog is not responding. You may withdraw from competition at any time by asking the permission of the Judge. If your dog has a tendency to show aggression or run from the ring be aware and ready to act immediately if necessary. If your dog happens to run out of the ring, make an immediate, concerted effort to call it back; if you are unable to get the dog back, you will be disqualified and under a SACA rule the judge is required to submit a report.

10. At the end of your run you must put your dog back on leash. The steward will have placed your leash in a designated spot for you to retrieve. Currently you will have the leash on your person. Once on leash, you and your dog may leave the ring. Time to celebrate!! 11. Cooling down your dog. Reward your dog with a treat or toy. It is also recommended that you spend some time cooling your dog down after their run before putting them away, so that they are fit and ready for their next run. Cool down and treat yourself too! 12. Packing-up and presentations. Help dismantle the rings and equipment, as well as begin packing up your own gear. Presentation of prizes and qualification cards is held at the end of the trial. It is courteous to other competitors to stay until the trial is over to support them and to help pack away equipment. 13. Some final points of etiquette (adapted from the Obedience Guide, but also see a forthcoming separate Guide on etiquette at agility trials). • If your dog is reactive, (is reactive or aggressive with humans or other dogs), it is your responsibility to avoid situations that may cause problems. If another competitor approaches too close to your dog, either ask them politely to move away or move away yourself. • Do not do anything that might interfere with or adversely affect another dog competing in the ring, such as: ✣ Train your dog or throw toys or other objects near a ring ✣ Walk your dog too close to a ring, particularly if a competing dog is close to the edge of the ring ✣ Allow your dog to bark or show excitable behaviour near a ring ✣ Make unnecessary noise near a ring, such as excessive clapping, cheering etc.; it is good to encourage fellow competitors but not to the detriment of others ✣ Run with your dog close to a ring • Do not allow your dog off lead in the vicinity of trial rings. SACA Rules require that dogs are secured on a lead, in a crate or pen at all times at a trial unless competing or in a designated off lead area. Note: This guide draws on existing agility and obedience guidelines as is available on the DogsSA website.

Retrieving news

The South Australian 2021 retrieving season kicked off on April 10th with the Gundog Club of SA’s first weekend of Retrieving Ability Test for Gundogs (RATG’s) at Grand Cru Winery, Springton. On the Saturday the Club welcomed Michelle Auld who had travelled from NSW to judge for the Club. The small field of 9 entries (5 in Novice and 4 in Open) was treated to four seasons in one day with sunshine, wind, rain and everything in between during the trial. The Novice stake included some short heelwork along the dam wall followed by a tricky recall down the side of the dam wall. Don’t worry though, handlers were not walking into water with the water level in the dam very low. This was followed by a marked run into light covered for the first retrieve and a second marked run into the water for the second retrieve. The Open stake had a nice piece of heelwork weaving amongst the trees followed by a downhill stop on recall which tested a few handlers. The first retrieve was a walk up done over the same run as the first Novice retrieve with the second run consisting of the same mark as Novice into the water (second pick up) and a shorter second mark over high terrain (first pick up) for a double mark. Unfortunate there was only 1 finisher in Novice but they fell just below the required qualifying score of 75/11. First place in Open went to Ms L Lennell & Mr R Dolphin’s Labrador Retriever Bitch NEUT CH REVEIRTER ABHAINN BLACKWATER (AI) NRA on 90 points with second place going to Mrs C Hayes’ Labrador Retriever Bitch NEUT CH CHEYANDOR GEM RA TDX QND NRD ORA HTM.S FS.I handled by A Hayes on 81 points. After the trial on the Saturday the Club also offered a beginners training which was well attended with a lot of different gundog breeds represented: German Shorthaired Pointer, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Logotto Romagnolo, Irish Water Spaniel, Weimaraner, Hungarian Vizla, English Springer Spaniels, Welsh Springer Spaniel. All dogs and handlers made positive progress across the session and walked away with some skills and drills that they could continue at home. The biggest take away for most handlers was the need to be more exciting than everything that an overstimulating and unfamiliar environment a retrieving property has to offer. Sunday there was another small field of just 7 dogs, 6 in Novice and just one Open entry. On the Sunday all runs were conducted on land which was much appreciated by most handers after having to deal with dogs covered in stinky dam mud Saturday morning. The heelwork and recalls for both stakes included some natural terrain and landmarks. The walk up in Open was a nice mark into ground cover with the second retrieving being a double rise up a slight hill. The Open walk up was then the first retrieve in Novice and the double rise the second retrieve. Unfortunately, the Open dog fell just short of the second pick up on the double rise and failed to finish. In Novice all the dogs show good improvements on their Saturday performance but only one finished with a qualifying score with first place going to Miss M Auld’s Labrador Retrievers Bitch GAMEFINDER ZOLPHOEN PIEPER on 79 points. The Club and handlers would like to give their sincere thanks Michelle and her partner Rob for making the trip from NSW. Michelle’s energy and enthusiasm both as a judge but also a fellow competitor, and her willingness to share all her best training tips and techniques was appreciated by all. Michelle also showed everyone a new way of running the stakes with all 4 exercises Sunday April 11t: Michelle Auld and GAMEFINDER completed back-to- ZOLPHOEN PIEPER with Judge Lynette Lennell May 2021

back for each competitor. Instead of each competitor completing each exercise in turn as 4 separate parts all judging was completed for a single dog in succession as the heelwork finished at the start of the recall, and the recall finished at the pegs for the control point of the first run which also served as the control point start for the second run. Competitors therefore finished being judged in one exercise and could then praise and reward their dogs briefly before setting up ready for the next exercise. Not only did this save considerable time by eliminating the need for a change over between competitors it also meant that dogs weren’t required to switch on and off all morning and overall performed well using this approach. The Gundog Club would like to thank Laucke Mills for supplying a bag of DIBs Premium Dog Bits for first place in each stake on both days and to Peter Seppelt for the use of his property. Thank you also to the competitors and spectators that helps with stewarding and on throwers across the weekend. Thank you also to Ferrocut, Therapetics Canine Massage and Mobility and Bremerton wines who all donated prizes for the Clubs raffle which helped to fund not only Michelle’s travel and accommodation but also other trial costs for the Clubs 2 remaining weekends of trials.

Retrieving Trials for Gundogs – RTFG’s A Retrieving Trial is an event at which competitions for the working of registered Gundogs are conducted, both on land and in or through water, to determine their relative merits in the field under conditions which emulate as closely as possible those which would be found whilst hunting, but at the same time bring the work of each dog within an ambit of equality where assessment may be fairly made. Each retrieve/run is marked out of 65. The competitor with the most points at the end of the competition (normally 3 runs, but no more than 4) is the Winner. You need to achieve 3 Wins at each level to gain your Title.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required. 2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16) 3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce. 4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases. 5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime. (01/20) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20) 6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. 7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19) 8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health. 9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12) 10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/ or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. 11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)

Stories around the campfire with All Breeds Dog Judge, John Lewington Cheyanne Wyoming 2002 In 2002 I flew from Adelaide to Denver, Colorado again and stayed with our friend Jude York, who had offered to drive me up to a place called Greely not far from the border with Wyoming. I was there to judge the Rocky Mountain Irish Wolfhound Specialty and then judge two days at the Cheyanne champ show. After I had finished judging the all breed show on the Saturday I was invited to a party put on by local land owners in Cheyanne for members of the Irish Wolfhound Club. Just wear something casual I was told no fancy suits. It was a warm evening so what better than cargo shorts and T shirt. My friend Barb Patterson picked me up at the hotel and took me along to this great big house set in acres of land. When I arrived I realised most of the guest were dressed in cowboy gear complete with check shirts cowboy boots and Stetson hat. The host had put on a wonderful spread for the Wolfhound fraternity including buffalo, goose and elk. These were just some of the delicacies available. A bar stocked with beer and a local music recording star entertaining us. They sure did a great job keeping everyone fed. One of the ladies from the Wolfhound club decided to do a rap song so I was part of the backing group along with a couple of Wolfhound ladies they sure know how to have a good time. The party wound down around 10.30pm so some of the Wolfhound ladies Jocelyn, Tamara, Bambi, Karen, and J Fred the son of our host decided it was time to hit the local night club (I think it was the only one in town). So they asked me if I would like to join them how could I resist. The night club was full of cowboys no one took any notice of me in my shorts and T shirt. The bouncers were dressed like Whyatt Earp with long black coats black trousers and black hats but there was no trouble, it was one of the friendliest night clubs I have ever been in. We danced the night away, then someone decided we should try the bucking bronco, that was when the fun started. I gave it a try but just got chucked off a few times so I watched how the cowboys did it and after a couple more scotches gave it one last try. I told them to wind it up full speed and hung on for dear life. Somehow I stayed on, when I got back to the bar the cowboys were asking where I leaned to ride I told them I had a ranch in Australia, and didn’t buy another drink all night. We left the club at 2.30 and I was up at 6.30 for another days judging cannot remember if I got any sleep. That morning while I was judging one of the ladies, Tamara, who had been with us at the night club came up and asked me what size waist I was. Later that day she came back with a present for me - it was a pair of wrangler jeans with a note on it that said real cowboys wear jeans not surfie shorts, it’s lovely to find dog people in all parts of the world who have a good sense of humour.
