President’s Report Over the last couple of months I have had members approach me and ask why Dogs SA does not apply for recognition as a sporting body so we would have access to grants and other government assistance. Both Dogs SA and the ANKC has investigated registering as a sporting body as we can meet the majority of the mandatory requirements. The one requirement we cannot meet is that we must be affiliated with an internationally recognised sporting body such as the Global Association of International Sports Federation (GAISF). The ANKC is currently discussing this issue with the FCI with the intent the FCI becomes a member of the GAISF and then the ANKC and member bodies can follow suit. With the increasing interest in dog sports it is considered we do have a case for recognition once the international hurdle is addressed. November starts the round of Annual General Meetings for our Advisory Committees and Affiliates. Many of our Affiliates are struggling to survive, not simply from a lack of funds but from the lack interest in being on committees or even assisting to manage events and training. Dogs SA and Affiliates need volunteers to maintain our hobby as inexpensive as possible. If we were required to pay everyone what they are worth, we would simply cost ourselves out of existence. If you have an interest in a particular discipline, go along to a meeting and see what you can do to help, I am sure you will be most welcomed. As many are aware some significant changes are being planned for the ANKC over the coming months. To stay informed register your interest from either the Dogs SA Face Book members page or the website. This is an exciting time for the ANKC and has been in the planning for a number of years so join them in the change when it arrives. There has also been concern over an ANKC regulation in relation to judges. Namely Regulations Part 5, 3.2.8 ‘A judge cannot exhibit, and any dog owned by a judge cannot be exhibited at a conformation show where that judge has been on the panel at one of the conformation shows using the same panel of judges at a cluster of shows.’ Dogs SA Council has voted to suspend the implementing of this regulation until December 2022 due to the issues Affiliates are experiencing with contracting judges and the ambiguity of the regulation itself. The suspension has taken effect immediately. With the hot weather approaching remember to ensure your dogs have plenty of shade and water or in most of our cases keep the air conditioner on for them. COVER STORY Like Father - Like Son We are so very pleased at the continued success and results of the Tasgall Collies Show Team. Gr Ch Derloch Pleasure Seeker – “Kane” (Our 3rd Gr Champion in a 12 month period) In March at the Le Fevre Kennel Club Championship Show “Kane” achieved his remaining points required to gain his Grand Champion Title under Mr G Cruse from N.S.W. Doing it in style he also went on to get Austbred in Group and also Austbred in Show. This made Kane our 3rd Grand Champion in a twelve month period. We are proud of his results being a BIG and multiple RUIG award winner, and the Sire of “Blaze”. Ch Tasgall Blaze of Glory – “Blaze” (Multi BIS, Multi BIG winner) In November 2020 when on the same weekend “Splash” – “ Blaze’s” mother gained her Grand Champion title, “Blaze” Won Multiple BIG and BIS. In December “Blaze” went on to achieve his Aust Champion Title after only 8 Shows. We are very proud of his results as he is now a Multi BIS, and BIG winner. While Our Tasgall Collies are owned and campaigned by Marty, Julie & Damien Ryan the results achieved are an accumulation of the help, guidance and assistance of many of the friends we have made on this journey. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (f) A current veterinary certificate is defined as a certificate dated within three months prior to the mating. Rationale Dogs SA Rules need to be consistent with the SA Government Rules.

These Advisory Committees shall advise and assist the Council in the management and control of their respective disciplines. The Obedience Advisory Committee will also manage and control Endurance Test Exhibitions. (01/09)

An Advisory Committees shall; (a) meet when necessary or as directed by the Council; (01/09) (b) submit full details of proceedings at their Advisory Committee meetings, including recommendations to the Council, within seven days of such meetings; (01/09) (c) submit an Annual Report to the Council reviewing the work of their Committees and advising of matters relative to their discipline; and (01/09) (d) conduct Special Meetings annually at which a report reviewing the work of the Advisory Committee shall be presented. An Advisory Committee shall consist of; (a) a Chairperson appointed by Council; (b) Committee members elected annually at the Special Meeting of Members shall be Obedience, Tracking, RAFT, Herding, Earthdog and Dances with Dogs each four and Agility six. There will be no vice Chairpersons and if required a Chairperson will be elected by the Committee to conduct the meeting for that night.

Not less than seven days notice shall be given of all meetings.

Each Member of respective Committees shall have one vote and the Chairperson in addition to his/her vote shall have the casting vote.

Any Members of the Committees absent without any apology from three consecutive meetings may be replaced by Members appointed by Council.

Special Meetings of the Committees shall be held during November in each year and at least fourteen days notice of such meetings shall be published in at least one edition of the Journal of the Association. Nominations must be in writing on the prescribed form: i. Must be nominated and signed by two persons eligible to vote; ii. Must contain a declaration, signed by the candidate, that he/she accepts nomination and is eligible to stand as a candidate. iii. Must be lodged with the DogsSA ofﬁce at least 14 days prior to the date of the discipline’s published Special Meeting. 1. If the number of nominations received by the Ofﬁce are equal to the number of vacant positions or is less than the number of vacant positions, the nominated candidate is duly elected.

2. If the number of nominations received by the Office exceeds the number of positions available a ballot will be undertaken during the Special Meeting. (09/21) Where insufficient written nominations are received for the Committee positions available, nominations for the unfilled positions may be accepted from the floor during the Special Meeting. (09/21) A Returning Officer is to be appointed by financial members in attendance at the Special Meeting to conduct a ballot as required. (09/21) Vote counting shall be under the direction of the Returning Officer who shall appoint scrutineers from the body of the meeting to assist. (09/21) The Chairperson will be appointed from within the Advisory Committee members elected annually at the Special Meeting of Members. (09/21) Where the Advisory Committee is unable to reach consensus on election of a Chairperson, Council may appoint an interim Chairperson from within the elected group until such time as the Committee agree a new Chairperson. (09/21) Should a full committee not be filled at the Special Meeting of Members or following an event triggered by clauses 9 or 10 Council may appoint additional members to fill the positions (09/21)

Working Parties for new Disciplines may be appointed by Council until such time as they hold their own Special Meeting of Members to elect a committee. The size of the working party shall be determined by Council. (09/21)

(09/21) Rationale: The current Rules of the Association regarding the construct of the Dogs SA discipline Advisory and Working Party Committees require that Council must appoint the Chair. After consultation with each of the discipline Advisories and Working Parties, Council has amended to Rules of the Association to empower each discipline to elect their own Chairperson and simply notify Council of the outcome of that election. Consequently, Rules of the Association Part X111 have been amended to clarify the construct of the DogsSA discipline committees and Working Parties, identify quorum numbers and processes for the election of Committee members.

Stories around 1%" *-Ɯ/" 4&1% All Breeds Dog Judge, ,%+ "4&+$1,+ Canberra Royal Many years ago, I was invited to judge at the Canberra Royal show for three days. Friday and Saturday I judged the toy breeds and on the Sunday I judged the Toy group, a very pleasant way of doing things. There was no pressure plenty of time to go over and move the dogs. Good size outdoor rings and no benches like most of the Royal shows where the dogs have to sit in a box all day and are only allowed out for a walk during the lunch break. The motel the judges were staying in was just across the road from the show grounds, I don’t think that particular one is still there but I may be wrong.

ALANA SHEPHERDSON I’m 17 years old. I live in Adelaide although I moved over from Western Australia in August 2014 with my family when I was 10. I’ve been showing dogs since I was 4 years old in the breed ring with my Italian Greyhound named Hannah at the time. I’ve achieved many things in my time in Junior Handlers although it is coming to an end for me. I won my age class at WA state final in 2011, 2013 & 2014. I continued to show in the breed rings when I moved, I took a 4-year break from handlers till 2019 when I decided I wanted to compete in Junior handlers again. I competed in the state final that year winning Runner Up State Final winner to the wonderful Darcy Clark. 2020 we didn’t have the state final due to COVID, but I continued to show mainstream. There were only ever three breeds that really took my breath away. They just happened to be the ones my mum bred. Australian Shepherds, Border Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs. I’ve campaigned and titled many dogs for my beautiful friends with the help of mum.

The judges were all given a dinner ticket and an entry pass for the main dining room at the showgrounds overlooking the large arena that was set up for the show jumping and several other events. I had been told not to dress up for dinner as it was a very casual affair. Apart from three suits shirts and ties I hadn’t packed much in the way of casual gear. T shirts I decided were not appropriate for a Royal show judge so I settled for a blue Denham shirt which was in fashion at that time, blue Levi Jeans and brown Doc Martin boots highly polished. Around 7.00 pm I wandered over the road and found my way to the main arena. When I walked up the pathway I was still trying to ﬁnd my pass. As I reached the door I was met by a man in a white coat who put his knuckle to his forehead and said good evening sir and opened the door for me. As I walked into the dining room I was met by a sea of blue Denham shirts blue Denham jeans and brown boots. I was greeted by just about everyone in the place although I knew nobody. When the other dog judges arrived and sat down, they could not understand how everyone in the room appeared to know me, nor could I. Later I was told that the blue shirt, blue jeans and brown boots was the thing to wear if you were one of the wealthy ranchers and stockmen from all over Australia that met there every year. It’s a funny old world, sometimes you can just get lucky and pick the right gear for the occasion and it sure helps when complete strangers keep buying you a beer.

My biggest achievement was becoming the Dogs SA Junior Handler State Final Winner with a dog Mum and I brought into the country together ‘Multi BIG Am Ch, Can Ch, Aus Ch Bellarose Hollybluff Ace of Hearts (Ace). Also, I’m currently campaigning a beautiful Border Collie Dog ‘Trumagik A Flash of Tartan’ (Bailey) for Maureen Kay (Qld). Recently we have won many Best of breeds and Two Best in Groups together. I could not have become the handler I am today without the help of Helen Fitzgerald who not only taught me so much as a person but stepped in and became a grandmother to me, loving me like her own and Berlinda Shepherdson (mum) for everything she sacrificed for me. A Judges Panel meeting to consider other ongoing matters including ﬁnalisation of the SA Agility Guidelines is yet to be convened. Equipment safety is another topic that has arisen at various times this year, and is on the agenda to be addressed at the next AAC meeting. National Championships Team Selection. Following a review of interstate approaches, criteria and processes for selection of the team to represent SA at the national championships next year have been distilled and it is hoped a ﬁnal decision may be made at the next committee meeting. Well the agility trialling season is drawing to a close, with just a couple more trials scheduled before the summer break. The ofﬁcial ‘competition year’ came to an end at the end of September and results are currently being tallied in readiness for the AAC Awards Night and AGM on Monday 8th November. But as our two photos capture, competitors and judges from across the agility community have been enjoying courses, testing their handling and partnership skills as gained at clubs, through workshops, private and home-based training, and identifying things for ongoing development. It’s exciting – but your support is needed to assist in growing the sport in SA. Let’s be inspired by the photos! This month, the AAC endorsed, with recommended provisos, the proposal from Council to amend the process of electing Advisory Committee members and the Chairperson, effective at the forthcoming AAC AGM in November. As has been published elsewhere, seven members will be elected to the AAC from which a Chairperson will be determined by the elected committee themselves. In the AAC’s response to the proposal, we identiﬁed a need to link this process to the AAC Terms of Reference (which themselves require updating), and to ensure that appropriate processes are enacted to allow the AAC Chairperson, if not a member of Council, to address Council directly when required. Consideration was also given to other matters including how the AAC may link with judges and also the ANKC Agility Committee. It is exciting to see some changes happening and the AAC looks forward to working with Council and staff in bedding down the processes to enable strong, transparent representation and communication on behalf of the agility community. The new Award rules, as published on the Dogs SA website, came into effect on October 1st and will be presented in November 2022. The Awards night is also your opportunity to acknowledge some of the people who have been involved in supporting the conduct of agility in SA, and voting for and/or welcoming the new AAC who play a crucial role, in collaboration with Clubs, in the development and conduct of your agility trials. While written nominations for the AAC closed on 25th Oct, if there are insufﬁcient nominations there is the option of calling for nominees on the night.
