President’s Report COVID has struck again in a big way with the cancellation of the Adelaide Royal Show for the second year. Below is a message from the Chair of the RAHS Dog Committee. “The cancellation of the Show is now ‘old news’ but it should be said that it came as a shock to the many people – the committee and Royal staff – who were intensely invested in it. Detailed plans had been formulated to ensure a safe experience for everyone but in the end events overtook us all and the decision was made to let it go for this year. As a committee, we were very aware of the anticipation of so many for the show this year. The Royal is special and the Adelaide Royal is extra special, widely recognised as the “friendly Royal”. However, this year it was not to be. The Committee for the Dog Section of the Royal Show wish to thank all those who entered this year – some 2,000 entries across the various disciplines of our dog sport. Your support and your entries were affirmation of the place the Royal holds in our show and competing year and we hope that you will all come with us on the journey to the Royal Adelaide Show 2022. Planning for the 2022 is already under way and with your support and the opening up of borders it will be a very special show! Thankyou to all. Dr Francis McEvoy” With the cancellation of the Royal the Junior Handler Committee has taken up the weekend of 11 – 12 September to host a number of events which would normally have been run at the Royal including, the state final of the Junior Handler Competition. This is a new experience for this committee so please get behind them and enter the events with the schedule being online and in the September journal. Conformation Judges Training has also stepped up and scheduled a number of practical handling days to assist trainees in their learning development. The new format of opening it up to all exhibitors by publishing notices on Face Book has worked well with plenty of dogs attending for the trainees to go over and new exhibitors gaining valuable experience. It has been very encouraging to see that many of our dog sports are continuing during these periods and that is a credit to those in the clubs organising these events with the ever changing COVID regulations. Just a reminder to all that the clubs have the responsibility of ensuring they have a COVID Safety Plan and are aware of the requirements current at the time of the event. People putting up other information, all with good intent are not helping the organisers. Let them work through it with the relevant authorities and post what the requirements are and we as competitors/spectators abide by them. With the current border closures many clubs are finding it difficult to contract local judges to allow events to continue. If we want our activities to continue we all need to put the effort in and if called for, judge events that you are licensed for. It is not too much to ask to give up a weekend to officiate in something that has given you so much already. As we enter into spring remember to watch your dogs for swooping Magpies and of course as the weather warms up snakes will start to come out. Remember our dog activities are a hobby and a great way to meet people and to socialize. None of us are playing for sheep stations so let’s all have some fun. NOMINATIONS FOR COUNCIL With nominations being called for in September/October 2021 for the election in February 2022 for half the officers of the South Australian Canine Association (SACA) Council, required to serve for a three-year term and one Councillor for a two-year term, it is relevant to provide the following information for interested members. SACA (trading as Dogs SA) is a member of the Australian National Kennel Council Ltd (ANKC) and is the controlling canine body for the State. It is responsible for matters relating to breeding standards, the registration and exhibition of pure-bred dogs as well as the promotion and encouragement of recreational, sporting, training, and trialling activities of Dogs SA registered dogs. Dogs SA is a non-profit organisation. It relies heavily on the support and voluntary involvement of many people to service its members and affiliated club organisations. Dogs SA is governed by an elected Council comprising a President, Vice-President and nine Councillors. The Council determines policies and procedures within the limits imposed by the SACA Constitution and Rules, the ANKC Ltd Rules and the regulatory environment of Common Law and legislative obligations associated with State and Local Government bodies. The officers of Council and members of supporting Committees are not renumerated for their services or travelling expenses. Any member considering nomination to a position on the Council should understand that regular evening meetings must be attended, and one must have available time to commit to the work involved including participating in various Council Committee meeting and activities. You must be prepared to serve as a team player and be able to offer to Council with enthusiasm, skills and experience required to help chart and drive the future viability of the Association. Dogs SA is faced with the challenge of retaining its membership numbers and developing strategies and approaches relevant to the future needs of those who enjoy pride in responsible dog ownership against other competing demands in society.

TRICK DOG TESTS
This new dog sport is attracting a lot of attention and growing participation.
Lynne Stapylton, together with her fellow Tricks Judges, has prepared the following information to assist those interested in preparing for and participating in Trick Dog Tests. Useful reading. Training dogs in tricks was introduced to assist handlers wanting to learn how to participate in Dances With Dogs. It is proving useful as a steppingstone to the fun sport of DWD. Margaret Bourn - DWD Advisory Committee
YOU WANT TO ENTER A TRICK DOG TEST? Trick Dog Tests commenced on 1st January 2020 and are proving very popular with handlers across the country. For those interested in learning more about this doggy discipline, the rules for Trick Dogs Tests are available on the ANKC website at: Rules (ankc.org.au). There is no substitute for reading the rules for any dog sport. Want to learn how to train your dog in tricks? There are a few Dogs SA Affiliated Clubs currently offering classes in trick dog tests namely, the Dances with Dogs Club of SA Inc and Gawler Dog Training Club Inc. Check out the Facebook pages for these clubs. If unsure, contact your local Dogs SA affiliated Club and ask. The first class in a Trick Dog Test is Starters – there are 18 different tricks in Starters, and as some have options, more than that. However, you and your dog only need to perform 6 tricks at the Starter class. Choose carefully and work to your dog’s strengths. Your dog does not need to be able to perform all 18 tricks, just the 6 that you choose. Some but not all tricks progress in the higher levels – for example S.1 Go Round – Once requires the dog to go around a cone or pole with the handler no closer than .5m. In Novice, this trick builds to N.2 Go Round – 3 m/1 ½ circles. In Novice the dog completes 1.5 circles of the cone/pole from a distance of at least 3 metres. In Intermediate this further builds to I.3 Double Go Round – 3m/2 ½ circles. However not every trick builds into the higher levels. It is worth reading through all of the tricks and seeing how they increase in the degree of difficulty in the higher classes. Some tricks require the use of a prop. For example, S.1 Go Round requires a cone or a pole for the dog to round. It is the responsibility of the handler to provide the props their dog needs for their tricks. The only exception to this is that some clubs will provide the jump for S.10 – if this is the case it will be stated on the schedule. The welfare of your dog is the primary consideration and if the judge is of the view your prop is not safe or inappropriate, the judge will not allow you to use that prop. To find out when Trick Dog Tests are being Page 14
held to the Exhibition List on the Dogs SA website. Note however that these days most Clubs are not publishing their schedules in the Dogs SA Journal – to find out details of upcoming Trick Dog Tests, go to the Facebook Pages of the Clubs who offer training in tricks. Also, there are several Facebook Pages providing information on trick Dog Test. For South Australia go to Dances with Dogs – and Tricks in South Australia. To enter a Trick Dog Test you must complete the entry form which is available on the Dogs SA website under the Downloads Section. You are required to provide both your Dogs SA Membership number and your dog’s registration number. For more information about this contact the Dogs SA office. You are required to mark on your entry form the tricks you will be performing. Send your entry and the entry fee as per the schedule, making sure it gets to the trial secretary before the closing date. On the day of the test make sure you arrive well before the vetting time (this will be stated on the schedule). You must report to the checkpoint to be marked off and collect your number. Your number must be worn when competing so remember to take either a safety pin or an arm band with you. Make sure you bring all your props with you to the Test. For the test you should note that the handler is expected to wear appropriate footwear – this means no thongs, scuffs or bare feet. So, make sure you have suitable footwear. Also, for the test your dog must have either a slip or fixed collar fitting loosely around the dogs neck. Collars which give additional
head control are not permitted. The dog must enter and exit the ring wearing a collar or harness with a lead attached or a slip lead. But a dog must not wear a shock, prong or pinch collar. The dog must not be artificially coloured. Long haired dogs may wear a head band to improve visibility but not as a decoration. If you are going to be using the reward station, ensure you have your treats or toy with you. Your treats must be in a secure container – and may be inspected by the judge before your test starts. The judge will hold a competitor briefing usually about 5 to 10 mins before the test is scheduled to start – make sure you are near the ring and attend the briefing. Listen carefully – the judge will expect you have this information and will not repeat it again when it is your turn. When it is your turn in the ring, you are required to place your props in the ring. You should practice this beforehand and have a good idea where you are placing your props in the ring. This will minimise delays and keep things flowing along. If you are taking too long the judge/steward will ask you to move it along. It is the handler’s responsibility to ensure the security of their dog while setting up and also removing their props from the ring. You cannot leave your dog in a stay outside the ring while you put your props out and you cannot take your dog into the ring while you set up. You cannot expect the steward to hold your dog. This means you must either have organised someone to hold the dog for you (make sure you have read any COVID rules the Club holding the Test have in place), More likely you will be expected to crate your dog while you put your props out and then remove them after your test. Enter the ring with your dog on lead and follow the judge’s instructions and GOOD LUCK! Your dog needs 3 passes in the Starter Class for their Trick Dog Starter Title (TK.S) under at least two different judges. To qualify your dog must score at least 5 out of 10 points for each of the 6 tricks plus a total score of 45 out of 60. Note in the Starter Class you have one retry (costs you 2 points which is deducted from your total score). The retry must be undertaken immediately after the incorrectly executed trick.
SOME DO’S AND DON’TS TO REMEMBER AT THE NEXT TRICK DOG TEST! This article sets out a few important tips for competitors to remember when competing at Trick Dog Tests. It takes a lot of people to run Trick Dog Tests - Judges, Stewards and Trial Managers are all volunteers who give freely of their time to get this relatively new doggy discipline of Trick Dog Tests up and running in South Australia. Please remember to treat them with respect! Stewards do a fantastic job and will be following the judge’s instructions, so please if you have an issue raise it with the judge, not the steward. All Clubs struggle to find sufficient volunteers, how about volunteering to steward at a test? It is a great way to see what is really happening in the ring and to follow the judges judging. And now for a few Dos: • Make sure you have your number clearly visible on you before you enter the ring. • Have all your props near the ring and ready to go when it is your turn. • Obey the exclusion zone – the rules require an exclusion zone of at least 1 metre around the outside of the ring. Spectators must remain outside the exclusion zone. • Keep watch as to what is happening in the ring so you know when your turn is coming up. If you are entered in another trial happening at the same time, ensure you keep the ring steward posted as to where you are so that you are not called and marked absent. • Listen to the steward who will advise you when you can enter the ring and set up your props. You should have practised the placement of your props when training, so put your props out as quickly as you can. You cannot take your dog into the ring while you put your props out, so ensure you have arrangements in place – the steward is not able to to ‘hold’ your dog for you. • Put props that the dog will hold on the table. • Keep your dog on lead when you enter the ring, and only remove your lead when instructed to do so. • At the end of the test put your dog back on lead before you leave the ring. Put your dog away. • Quickly return to the ring to remove your props • Always clean up after your dog at the Club grounds And a few Don’ts: • Don’t take your dog into the ring before the Test starts unless you have the specific permission of the Test Manager and the Judge • Don’t crowd around the entrance to the ring – ensure the competitor before you has access to get their dog and props out of the ring. Note- we do usually have an entry gate and an exit gate to make this much easier for competitors, but it is not always possible • Don’t train your dog outside and near the ring when another dog is competing – how would you feel if your dog was distracted during its test because of another dog? Happy Trialling!

Stories around the campfire with All Breeds Dog Judge, John Lewington Judging New Jersey USA In 2007 I took off to America yet again, this time I was heading for New Jersey to judge a two day all breed show. I was not alone and was accompanied by my wife Sue and Albert and Gale Reading. We were picked up in Newark Airport and taken to our hotel on arrival. The next morning, I went with Gale to pick up the hire car she had organised. When we arrived, there were about 60 cars on the lot, take which one you like they are all the same price, the young man told us. We decided to take the black Pontiac fast and sleek. When we got back to the Holiday Inn, Sue said nice car but where are we going to put four suitcases and all the bags, they won’t fit, don’t be silly I said we can get them in. The car was great, and we used it for three days going backwards and forwards to the show which was a 20-minute drive away. I was having a ball as the designated driver the car was not unlike my V12 Jaguar I had at home. Saturday morning judging all done, and we were on our way to Boston, a 5-hour drive, to watch the Bull Terrier National (Silverwood in the Sheraton Hotel). Up early but the suitcases would not fit a very small boot and the ladies refused to sit in the back with their cases on their lap - they really were spoil sports. Gale and I took the car back only to find the hire place empty. The young man said he had been very busy, and all his cars were gone. He said he would try and help us out and rang a mate of his who had a car hire lot up the road and five minutes later he arrived with a large four-wheel drive car like our other car a Ford Territory. No extra charge he said I will sort it out. The American people are great and really look after you. Back at the hotel we loaded all the bags in the back and were on our way a bit later than we thought but at least the ladies, Sue and Gale, were happy. I did mention when driving on the freeways that it was a nice comfortable car but did not go like the Pontiac. I should have listened to Sue when she said the cases would not fit but it’s all good fun and we got there okay in the end but it was a lot more exciting driving the black Pontiac.
AGILITY NEWS It’s also an important time to consider the ongoing management of the sport – if you’d like to get more involved, you are warmly invited to consider nominating for the AAC. Details regarding the nomination process for AAC 2022 members’ election will be forthcoming. By the time you read this, we shall be half way through the six week trial drought – fingers crossed we shall all be back again later this month. In the meantime, stay safe and have fun at Clubs and training, wherever you may be. And enjoy the Potted History of Agility, kindly compiled by Judy Magarey – it’s a most insightful and enjoyable read!

Wasn’t it wonderful to be trialling! Two trials have been successfully held over the past few weeks - and we were fortunate that the weather gods prevailed with beautiful weather. Sadly, however, the pandemic gods have not cooperated and the Covid Curse has continued to impact on the sport with three events being cancelled (two metro and one country), in addition to the Royal Adelaide Show. On behalf of the agility community we extend our commiserations to the clubs and those involved; not only is there a loss in much needed income but the amount of work that goes into organising these events is massive. We know many competitors appreciate this but without the voluntary efforts of the amazing organisers, behind the scenes and out-front people, scribes and stewards, we would not be competing at all. SO, a massive shout out to all those who put in much time and energy, in order that we can run our dogs, have fun, and gain awards for those for whom this is also important. And hearty acknowledgements to those competitors who show their respect for the efforts of organisers and judges, by helping out in rings too. The AAC has also been progressing efforts on various matters including End of Year Awards, selection criteria for state team for nationals, support options for judges and instructors for ongoing skills development in course design and association training implications, seeking opportunities to comment on/contribute to the SACA Rules that are currently being drafted, as well as clarifying roles and responsibilities and communication processes between the AAC and Dogs SA and Council. End of Year Awards: After much discussion and an opportunity for competitors to provide comment, changes to the End of Year Award (EOY) Rules have been agreed upon and have been forwarded for endorsement by Dogs SA Council. These will come into effect for the 2021-2022 competition season (1st October – 30th September). The End of Year Awards for Agility and Jumping have not been reviewed since November 2012, and Games EOY rules have not been reviewed since August 2008. As many will be aware, the current system is outdated, overly complex and cumbersome. As outlined in last month’s news, there will be some reductions in the number and range of awards, but SA will still be providing more awards than any other state! Full details will be published as soon as they are approved by Council. End of Year Awards 2021 - Notice to Country Competitors: If you live 100km by road from the Adelaide GPO, you are considered a ‘country competitor’, and are eligible for End of Year Country Competitor awards. However, to ensure country competitors are correctly identified, the AAC requests that you please inform the committee in writing at your earliest convenience: secretary@ agilitysa.net This will be an ongoing annual requirement. Preliminary Notice: AAC Awards Night and AGM - Monday 8th November 2021. We are aiming to make this year’s Awards Night and AGM gathering an enjoyable event and celebration of agility. September 2021
From ‘Crufts Demo’ to International Sport - A Potted History of Dog Agility - Judy Magarey In 1977 John Varley, a member of the Crufts Committee reflected that the current Cruft’s events could be boring for spectators and decided to create a demo which would be interesting. He contacted a friend, Peter Meanwell who was an experienced working dog trial exhibitor. They formed a committee to work with 5 other working trial colleagues to develop the first dog agility trial. The design of the event was influenced by a RAF Canine Corps jumping event, witnessed by Meanwell in the mid-1970s and possibly other agricultural events he had attended. The principles of the event were; it had to be fun, it must not be dangerous and it must have spectator appeal. To increase interest two teams of handlers and their dogs were recruited to compete in the first demo. These were from the ‘Lincolnshire Alsatian Association and All Breeds Training Society’ and the ‘Yorkshire Working Trials Training Society’ (working Border Collies). The demo was held in February 1978. The teams each consisted of four handlers and their dogs; the Yorkshire team won the event.
Preparing for Crufts - From The Agility Dog by Peter Lewis, 1981 Canine Publications
In 1979 some clubs began offering training in agility and the first competition ‘betting on agility’ was held at the international equestrian show Olympia in London. Complaints regarding the lack of regulation led to the first set of rules being written in 1980. Peter Lewis, an experienced working trial exhibitor, headed the committee formed to develop the rules. Lewis ‘the father of agility’ was a highly significant figure in the development of the sport. He set up the first National Agility Club in the UK in 1988 and is also said to be responsible for the spread of agility to Holland, Sweden, Belgium, Norway and France. Lewis’ meeting with an American obedience competitor in 1983 was also pivotal to the sport being introduced to the USA. In 1986 the United States Dog Agility Association was formed. Dog agility is now a world-wide sport with clubs and competitors in the UK, and throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia and of course New Zealand and Australia. Handling techniques have evolved rapidly and there are many international professional organisations offering training. There are literally thousands of publications dedicated to agility including, books, journals and E-publications. Not an insignificant growth rate considering the first book on agility was published in 1981 by Peter Lewis. Page 17
Agility in Australia NSW was the first Australian state to introduce agility in 1984 and by 1986 it had become a national sport, governed by the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC). There are now a further two agility competition organisations in Australia. The first is closely aligned with the USA and Canadian competition, the Agility Dog Association of Australia (ADAA) and has affiliated clubs, in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia. The second NADAC is a division of the North American Dog Agility Council and they run competitions in Victoria. These two organisations have different competition rules to the ANKC. Agility in South Australia One of the most significant figures in the introduction of agility to South Australia is Gwenda Baker, who after attending a Shetland Sheep dog trial in Sydney in 1992 decided SA needed an agility dog club. Several current agility competitors and judges were on the first advisory committee including Neville Cox and Keith Millington. Now some nine ANKC affiliated clubs across SA offer agility training. Evolution of the competition The rapid evolution of course design is reflected in the rule changes. The first agility competitions bore more resemblance to obedience than current agility. The first courses were figure eights with the handler changing sides at a pause table in the centre of the figure. The front cross was the only handling technique and was said to be accidental. See below an example of a course from the 1986 rule book.
Nanette Lee and Bonnie doing triple jump in 1995, Judge Keith Millington
John Maiolo and Lacey 1999; note the three contact zones.
There were two rounds in the trial. There was no standard course time, but the fastest 50% of the dogs would progress to the second round. A five second penalty was applied for each mistake. Equipment included 8 weavers with flags, a triple jump, spread hurdle, a tyre (literally constructed from a tyre), broad jump, dog walk, scramble and a tunnel constructed from a 44 gallon drum and canvas chute. There were two classes of dog sizes, small and large. Dogs could attain one title, ‘Agility Dog’. Stewards used flags to indicate to the judge if the dog weaved correctly. By 1995 there were now three classes of dog sizes and in addition to the early equipment a high jump and bar jumps were included. There were different colours indicating the contact zones for each different height of dog. There were still only 8 weavers and the drum tunnel. The two rounds in each competition continued. Page 18
By 1997 dogs were able to attain three titles, AD, ADX (called open) and ADM. A standard course time was introduced. The novice class continued with 8 weave poles but for higher classes there were 12. A seesaw and the pipe tunnel for the higher classes were introduced. In 2001 jumping classes were introduced. The handler was excluded from a zone of 0.5 m around the weavers and 1 m around the table. By 2006 there were open classes with a distance challenge and the title of Agility Champion had been introduced. There were five different height categories and later on there was only one contact zone on the contact obstacles. The triple jump had been abolished and all classes weaved 12 poles. Games had also been introduced. The exclusion zones around the table and weavers were abolished. Agility Now The rules governing the sport have continued to evolve. The table and the chute tunnel have been dropped. Equipment specifications are more closely regulated. Greater attention is paid to the dog’s path and leg changes, as the speed of the sport continues to increase and with the trend to backside sends. The most recent rule changes (2021) introduced a games champion title and an elite class. Distances between obstacles have increased to a minimum of 5m and a max of 10m. There are many different handling systems and more than to 35 different manoeuvres. Agility in the future. So what does the future hold? These are my thoughts. I hope the sport will continue to thrive. Maybe there will be compulsory electronic indicators for the contact zones? Equipment will be more standardised and safer. Evolution of handling techniques will continue. There may be a possible division between the speed courses and those constructed for complex handling. I hope there will be changes informed by research on how to prevent injury to our dogs and an increased focus on fun in the sport. Maybe there will be an ageing handler class. I hope agility will be recognised as a sport and will be included in the Olympic Games. And finally, as the founders specified, agility should continue to be fun, safe and have spectator appeal. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required. 2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16) 3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce. 4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases. 5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime. (01/20) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20) 6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. 7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19) 8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health. 9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12) 10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/ or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. 11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)

ANKC Scent Work Trial
The Dogs SA Scent Work Working Party has scheduled the first ANKC Scent Work Trial in South Australia on Saturday 30th October 2021, at David Roche Park commencing at 10.00 am. An interstate Judge is to be contracted so the trial will be dependent on the borders being open. ANKC Scent Work trials are open to all dogs registered with the ANKC. Please check the ownership on your pedigree and ensure all owners are members of Dogs SA or other interstate office. If your dog is non-pedigree please make application for registration on the Associate Register. Scent Work is a sport that is based on the task of working detection dogs to locate an odour and communicate to the handler that the odour has been found. Detection is done in a variety of environments and often during changing weather or environmental conditions. Scent Work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the handler and dog. Dogs are trained to recognise specific odours, and to alert their handlers when the odours are detected. Dogs may paw, bark, point with their nose or body, sit, lie down, or use any other non-destructive behaviour to communicate the location of the odour. Handlers take their dogs through a search area which may be set up in a variety of environments. The dog and handler must work together as a team. The handler is part of the team, using body language and verbal encouragement to ensure all sections of the search area are covered, directing the dog’s search only when necessary and indicating to the Judge when the dog has found the odour. Communication with and praise of the dog during the search are encouraged. If you require any further information regarding Scent Work, contact Brian Fielder at brifield@bigpond.net.au or Bron Gascoigne at agilecavs@gmail.com September 2021
