President’s Report Council conducted a Presidents and Secretaries meeting in June and has commenced actioning recommendations from the affiliates. Concerns were raised about the time being taken to install an accessible entrance into the Marsula-Brine rooms for people with disabilities. Approval was granted at the April Council meeting to commence installation the week prior to the Winter International however, as the installation would not be completed prior to this event, it was agreed to postpone to a later date. The contractor is currently rescheduling the trades to complete the task with minimal disruption to Dogs SA events and is anticipated to be completed during the month of August. Members would have noticed that work is progressing in the old office to convert it into meeting rooms and other uses. The building is being divided into 2 rooms with an operable wall in the middle so can also be expanded to a single large room when required. The rooms will also be available for other activities or when affiliates are using the off-lead area for organised activities. A deep fryer was purchased for the canteen so hot chips, Chiko Rolls and Dim Sims will be available during events at DRP. This purchase is part of the redevelopment of the Canteen and BBQ area to meet current food standards and also to provide a more diverse range of food and beverages available from the canteen. The canteen is always seeking clubs to assist in the canteen for which they are paid a commission to assist with their fund-raising efforts. If you are interested, please speak with Margaret at the canteen to book a day or weekend. The Royal Adelaide Show entries have now closed and all indications are that entries have exceeded the expectations of the committee in all disciplines. This is a pleasing result given the rate of inflation and how it is hurting the hip pocket and the fact that COVID 19 is still out there causing us all headaches. It will be good to see everyone back at Wayville socializing and enjoying each other’s company. Council issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the members for a position on the Governance Sub Committee and reviewed the EOI received at the June Council meeting. I am happy to announce that Michael Ross was selected to be the 3rd member of the subcommittee. I welcome Michael on board and thank others for their interest in the position. Most would have read on Face Book about a member’s car being damaged whilst attending an event at DRP. The damage was a malicious act by a person and it is not believed to be a member. It just shows that we should all remain vigilant at events whether at DRP or other grounds and watch out for each other’s property. If you see something suspicious report it immediately to either the SACA Rep or event manager and if possible, get photos on your phone. Do not try to interject with the person by yourself. The dogs pictured are handled on most occasions by Baylie Mercer. They have all been successful at both Specialty & Allbreeds shows. Baylie is prepared to handle any show dog regardless of its breed or level of training. Working with many breeds has allowed Baylie to gain knowledge and improvements in her handling abilities. Her goal is to get the best out of the dogs she handles. Her nickname being the “dog whisperer.” Afonwen & Alimanda Kennels are working together for the betterment of our chosen breeds, & hopefully assisting future generations so that Dog Sports will continue. We are always willing to offer a hand at any show or event. We love to mentor & educate people about our breeds. The suspension will commence from 1st August 2022 and end on 28th February 2023 3. DNA tests are required for all puppies in the litter along with the dam and two potential sires.

Exhibitor Courtesy with dropping / throwing bait Exhibitors are increasingly reporting their dogs are distracted when gaiting or stacking due to bait thrown or dropped in the ring and not picked up. Be considerate to other exhibitors and ensure any bait dropped is immediately picked up and removed from the ring and not left to cause distraction to others. Please also be mindful that bait left lying in or around rings can attract European wasps which may cause serious harm to dogs attempting to grab baits with wasps attached.

Firstly we would like to congratulate our 3 new Track and Search judges, Leanne Dunn, Narelle Medlicott and Joanne Murrell who all successfully passed their exams this year. Welcome to the world of track and search judging. We would like to thank everyone who turned out to help make this trial such a success, without you all there wouldn’t be a trial. We all know it takes a lot of people to run just one track and a lot more to run a successful trial. So thank you all. On 25 June 2022 the Scent Work Advisory Committee held its second scent work trial. For this trial we welcomed our first interstate judge, Ms Sonja Needs from Victoria. Sonja judged Novice Interior and Novice Exterior. Sharon Gahan judged Novice Containers in the morning, and Narelle Medlicott judged Novice Containers in the afternoon. We received 136 entries over the 4 Novice Elements, with lots of great passes in each. The highlight of the day being that 11 competitors are now eligible to apply for their Scent Work Novice Title (SWN) being the first ones for SA. Congratulations to all those competitors. On Sunday, the Scent Work Advisory Committee organised for Sonja to conduct a “train the trainer” seminar for those affiliated dog clubs who are currently training in, or are looking to introduce scent work to, their club training. The seminar was well attended by representatives from 9 clubs. The session was informative, and included topics such as odours, odour handling and storage, scent kits, and how to train for scent work. All attendees were given a handout to take back to their clubs to use in their training programs. We wish all those clubs well with their training and hope you enjoyed the seminar. SWAC would sincerely like to thank Sonja for judging at our trial, and for sharing her knowledge with us all. Our next trials will be held on Friday, 14 October and Sunday, 16 October 2022. The Sunday trial will be our first offering elements in the Advanced class. Keep an eye out elsewhere in the Journal for the schedules, and on the Scent Work SA Facebook page. In relation to progressing through the classes, we’d like to remind competitors that they will need to be familiar with rules 6.1 and 6.2 of the ANKC Scent Work Rules. As per those rules, it is important to note that once you have two passes in any element at Novice level, you are unable to compete further in that element. Quite a few of you have 2 passes in each element. For example, if you have 2 novice exterior passes, you cannot compete in novice exterior any longer. You must compete in the advanced exterior class. However, if you have your SWN title and only have one pass in novice exterior, you can still compete in novice exterior to try for another qualification. This extra pass can be used towards an element title down the track.

Snippets of news! The Penalty updates published in the June Journal have created some confusion and concern – don’t be alarmed! There is no intention to try and confuse or entrap you. The rules are the same rules that have always been there – it is only the penalties attached to same that were reviewed. Concern around the use of powder rule (which has always been there) – if you have used loose powder or the like for grooming your dogs previously and it has not been a problem – it won’t be now. Concern around the “handling” of dogs rule (exhibited or handled by a person who is not entitled to do so) – also has always been the rule but it is confusing – as long as the person handling your dog is a Dogs SA member – you are fine.
