President’s Report Welcome all to 2022. It appears that COVID will still be the new norm as we move into this year and it is just something we are going to have to live with. Dogs SA will continue to comply with all SA Health directions on the restrictions imposed and where possible advise members on how it may affect them or our events. December was again a busy month for myself with a number of meetings with organisations outside of Dogs SA. The first of these was the Annual General Meeting of Sports SA to which Dogs SA is a member body. The conversations there were very interesting particularly what other bodies were doing to promote themselves and to entice and retain memberships and just as importantly volunteers. The leader of the opposition in SA Mr Peter Malinauskas was a guest speaker and outlined his party’s objectives for Sport and Recreation should they be elected into government in March 2022. He has agreed to dismantle the Partnership Program which was detrimental to the smaller bespoke activities such as ours. The second meeting was with Associations Forum SA. This is an Association which represents many Associations within SA and provides advice and support as necessary. Much of the focus of this meeting was around the relationships between the management boards and CEO/EO. The conversation was very enlightening particularly with Dogs SA not having a full time EO for many months. This matter should be remedied in 2022 with the recruitment commencing in December 2021. A further meeting was held with Gayle Grieger CEO of the DCMB. This was an informal catch up to discuss a range of issues including DACO and what we considered to be the shortfalls it had in identifying puppy farms or unethical breeding practices. We talked around the proposed review of the Dog and Cat Management Act and the Standards and Guidelines for the Breeding and Trading in Dogs and Cats. I expressed concern that Dogs SA does not want to go down the draconian regulation adopted in Victoria as it has no relevance on puppy farming but further penalises the responsible breeders of associations such as ours. These was some consensus on this as it created an administrative burden on the authorities for little benefit. Hopefully 2022 will be a better year for Dogs SA and its members with activities getting back to normal and the Association moving forward again with a new EO. The staff of Dogs SA have done a marvellous job keeping us going through this and I would like to thank Ann, Cheryl, Hayley and Georgia for all of their efforts and trust they will come back fully refreshed in the New Year. Just a final reminder that elections are now open and this is chance to have your say on the future of the Association. So make your vote count. There are 3 ballots, 1 for President, 1 for the election of 5 Councillors for a 3 year period and the final for 1 Councillor for a period of 2 years. Read the directions on how to vote. BRIAN PARKER – For President Why am I re-standing for President of Dogs SA? Over the years I have led Council and the membership through a number of exciting initiatives and also challenging times. These I do not believe have been finished and am encouraging members to allow me to continue to improve our associations standing within the community and government. Our achievements: When I first came on Council as Vice President Dogs SA was struggling to service its loan on SACA Park. This was not through bad management but by not having the foresight to raise funds to assist in servicing our loans or building cash reserves. With the support of Council we instigated a policy of annual fee rises by CPI + 1%. This incremental rise has allowed Council to build up cash reserves which has seen the loan on David Roche Park being finalized, improvements completed and us being able to push through the COVID Pandemic without increasing fees in 2020 to assist members and affiliates. David Roche Park is continually being commented on by both international and interstate visitors as the best they have seen as an outdoor venue. We have purpose-built facilities which can accommodate many of our activities including Dog Sports (Agility, Obedience, Herding, Earthdogs and a number of others). The office has moved from a dirty old building out the back to a purpose-built office at the front of the complex. The Marsula/Brine Rooms have undergone a midlife upgrade which included a new kitchen and toilet facilities. Our future: Our future is still not rosy with relatively steady membership which is aging and needs to grow. Governments and Local Councils which are not that dog friendly introducing legislation which restricts the ownership of dogs. As an organisation and with the support of Dogs Australia (ANKC Ltd) we need to encourage the benefits of being a member of Dogs SA and to be seen as a united front. Without forgetting our history of being an organisation for the preservation of registered pedigree dogs we also need to introduce new breeds which meet very strict criteria to allow ourselves to grow. Remember the vast majority of our current breeds were developed from selected cross breeding for a purpose and not simply a designer dog for profit. We need to encourage not just participation in our current sports but also to introduce new sports where they align to our idealisms of owning and interacting with our dogs. We need to interact more with other canine sporting bodies such as Australian Flyball Association and Australian Sled Sports Association so we can remove the stove pipes. Many members already compete with both so let’s encourage it. The Dog and Cat Management Act which was amended in 2017 is due for it’s 5 year review in 2022. I represented Dogs SA membership at the 2017 consultations and although we did not win every battle we did come out with some good wins so the war was not lost. We will need to go through this again. Why vote me as President: As an executive with the Department of Defence I have developed leadership skills which will continue to assist the Association grow. I am a team player I have demonstrated Page 6
good leadership throughout the years. Until recently Dogs SA has had a strong and united council which has been able to deliver the outcomes the members have expected. Councillors have always been encouraged to speak out and put their suggestions forward. It then becomes a council decision to accept, develop further or reject an idea. I am not simply a Conformation or Sports person and have interests in both sides. My dogs compete in conformation with my partner Lyn however I am a Sled Sport judge. I openly encourage people to train with our Obedience clubs as, who is more experienced in training and socialization of dogs. 2022/2023 will be important years for us with the ANKC changing tact to being a more open organisation, something I have been advocating for many years, the Dog and Cat Management Act coming under review and the engagement of a new Executive Officer. I already have well established contacts with the relevant organizations to be able to influence change. As from 23 December 2021 I will be transitioning to retirement so will have significant time available to meet with organizations to promote our cause. This is something I have missed over the years and flexibility to meet is paramount when dealing with Government organizations. My first priority should I be re-elected is to again build Dogs SA council back into a unified and cohesive body to better support the Association and its members. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact me at Sibertac@bigpond.com or 0417724223 and I will be happy to respond.

ROBERTA CROUCH (Prof) – For President / Councillor 3 year term Dear Members, I’m seeking your support in running for President/Councillor, to work with you to lead Dogs SA into a resilient future. This will be based on achieving membership growth across all our disciplines, because I believe that is critical to our future. A focus for me during my first term, has been the development of a forward thinking and engaging strategic plan that relies on engaging the extensive knowledge and talent in our membership to implement exciting strategies to grow our membership and support all aspects of our Dogs SA activities. We need to promote and support our non-conformation members as a priority, such as obedience, agility, dances with dogs and all the other terrific sports that our dedicated trainers share with all dog owners in our society. Our affiliated clubs (of all types) provide invaluable services to all dog owners representing important opportunities to build awareness of Dogs SA in our community. I want to provide more help to our breed clubs and all breed clubs, who are adjusting to changing times, where clubs don’t look like they once did. We need to reaffirm the value of a high-quality purebred dog, bred by one of us, against the relentless competitive messaging. Critically, we need to work together with mutual respect and be able to voice thoughts and opinions freely. These are uncertain times; Dogs SA needs to move forward with a strategic and community-oriented focus and investments to attract new members and our leaders of the future, and at the same time, ensure the future of our beautiful and distinctive pure-bred dogs. There is much to do. I have a long history with Dogs SA and have been a member for 34 years. I have bred and exhibited Rottweilers under my Blackcombe prefix for over 30 years, and more recently, Norwegian Buhunds. I am a Specialist Judge for Rottweilers and have judged them at Specialty level nationally, and internationally. I have also held my Judges license for the Utility, Gundog and Working Dog groups for many years. Workwise, I am a Professor in Management at Flinders University, moving there three years ago from The University of Adelaide. I have conducted research and/or worked in Singapore, Austria, Finland, Germany, the USA, China, Vietnam, the UK and South Korea, as well as living and working for 2 years in Burgundy (France). My research has been widely published in highly ranked, international academic journals in addition to traditional and industry-based media. I believe my background in the dog world, in addition to my education and experience in marketing, business, and strategic planning permits me to work effectively with ALL members to achieve our goal of building a strong, resilient Dogs SA for the future – it would be my great honour to try. https://www.facebook.com/RobertaCrouchPhD January 2022
PETER DYNAN – For President / Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term The past months have been difficult in more ways than expected, particularly with COVID 19 appearing on our horizons. Dogs SA has been under threat of legal action from many fronts and I, along with other members am concerned with issues that have arisen, which started at the reconvened AGM, and have continued on throughout the year. I would like to see Dogs SA return to a friendly place and you the members are the only ones that can make that happen by using your votes wisely. To that end I am standing for election as President, and Councillor, of Dogs SA in the elections being held in 2022. To that end I would like to introduce myself. I have been obedience training since 1977. I became interested in the trainer side of this later the same year and became an instructor. My involvement with Dogs SA (formerly known as SACA) began after I became an instructor and continues to this day. During this time, I have worked in various positions, as Vice President and a Councillor, taking on the full responsibility of those positions. I have more than working knowledge of many disciplines, and at all levels of the dog world, through affiliated clubs, Dogs SA and ANKC Ltd and am committed to whatever position I undertake. Within these environments I have held positions such as Chief Instructor and committee member of SAODC, Dogs SA representative of the ANKC National Agility Committee since 2005, Chair of the same committee for about 10 years and have chaired three agility rules update meetings. I believe that all Councillors should be involved in working on behalf of the membership, and Dogs SA. To that point these are the activities that I have participated in: Chair of the Dogs SA Agility Advisory Committee, Chair of the ANKC National Agility Committee, Chair of several conciliation meetings, Panel member of disciplinary panels and, Panel member on review panels whenever needed. To be fair to all disciplines’ needs, Dogs SA representatives should have experience in more than one part of Dogs SA. My involvement includes Agility, Obedience, Rally O and Endurance Tests. Through my skills, knowledge and understanding of the differing fields of Dogs SA, I feel that I would be the most appropriate person to fill the role of President on the Dogs SA Council. My advice has often been asked for on various matters relating the rules, policies and procedures within Dogs SA and I have also assisted in solving many issues in the above-mentioned disciplines. I look forward to being able to support and guide Dogs SA into a brighter future should I be elected as your representative. If you have anything that you would like to discuss with me, you can contact me on 0419501117 or pj@baonline.com.au Page 7
LANCELOT JAMES HEILMANN – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term I once again put my name forward to serve Dogs SA and the Canine Community of SA as a member of Council. Member of Council for 18 years’ service to the association. Club activities – I am still involved with many clubs and have served all positions. For many years, since a Junior member for over 40 years handling my mother’s Rough Coated Collies and still showing this breed. I have always had great commitment to the Dog World, using my background in financial management to assist many clubs with their admin and fundraising with running amenities shows to benefit the association. I raised some $25,000 for improvements to our wonderful grounds. Infrastructure of the Association. We need to maintain priority to our grounds for your benefit, recently new air conditioning in the bar for your comfort and new lights for outside rings. I also utilise my experience to assist other board members to increase and maintain financial stability to our obedience, agility, herding, dances with dogs, along with other associated clubs of the organisation as they are valuable assets to the association. Judges Training panel – As group leader of the Working Dog Group I shall continue to give my experience and expertise to produce top judges in the future. Current position I hold for Dogs SA and Clubs. President Winter International Committee & Collie Club. Treasurer Cattle Dog Club and Canine Fanciers Kennel Club. Life Member Dogs SA, Canine Fanciers Kennel Club, Adelaide Kennel Club. Patron Adelaide Kennel Club & Shetland Sheepdog Club. I must congratulate our Junior Handler Committee for their dedication. We need to promote our future Junior and our future to become leaders in running our association. I would like the opportunity to complete these tasks and ask you, the members to honour me with your vote for Council. Lancelot J. Heilmann
JEFFREY BINDING – For Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term As it is now time for new Councillors to be elected, it is my earnest wish to be return to Council, which will allow me to once again, serve you the members. It is important to any committee to have diverse expertise of willing workers at all levels, and I have a proven record of being a reliable, willing worker, plus a long time active member of our great sport. I am a secondgeneration dog person following my late parents with many years of Group six involvement. This includes being a member of several club committees, a SACA representative, Junior Handler Judge, Ring Steward, and general all-round Club and Show assistance person. I can be found at most shows, working often simply as an extra, not necessarily on that committee. I am not afraid of hard work, especially if it contributes to ongoing improvements for the general membership benefits. I also see myself as being an independent, decisive, honest, and willing to continually learn for the benefit of our Association, my own man. In support of our Association, I respectfully request you vote for my continuing support within Council. Thank you Jeffrey Binding
CHLOE DUNLOP – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term
SADIE PODGER – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term
Hello to Dogs SA members and readers. My name is Chloe Dunlop, and I have volunteered to become a member of the Dogs SA Council this year, with your support. I have been involved with dog sports for just over 10 years now. My border collies and I have achieved titles together in rally, agility, games, and tricks, and have undertaken training in tracking, obedience, herding, and scent work. I’ve been involved in trial management too, as trial manager, trial secretary, and through stewarding at many clubs. I am currently a committee member at Southern Districts, where I instruct in obedience, agility and tricks. I’m also a committee member for the Border Collie Club of SA, and part of the Agility Advisory Committee. My main passion is to encourage people to have fun with their dogs, and training and trialling is a key way to promote the building of that relationship. Dogs SA is uniquely placed in the community, and through the promotion of dog training and exhibitions, we have such a great opportunity to improve the lives of dogs and their owners in the public sphere. If I were voted onto council, I’d love to see us further promote the activities and services that we offer to the public. My dream goal is to see dog sport disciplines officially recognised as a sport! We also need to examine the way that Dogs SA functions to make ourselves more relevant, supportive, and accessible to both members and dog owners in general. I have experience writing policy documents and guidelines from working on other committees, and I’m ready to work with the other councillors to realise these goals. I have enjoyed being a part of passionate teams who try to bring about positive changes for our sports and breeds. With your support, I hope to be able to work towards these goals for Dogs SA as a whole.
I am a retired paramedic, health care professional and have volunteered for St John Ambulance and currently volunteering with Rotary International. I have been in the dog world since 1993 when I purchased a pedigree Pembroke Welsh Corgi and started participating in Conformation Shows & Obedience the following year. Having bred, trained and owned many Australian Champions (Pembroke & Cardigan Corgi), 5 Australian Grand Champion Cardigans, as well as obtaining the first Australian Neutered Grand Champion Cardigan under the prefix of Afonwen. Winning at both the National Breed specialty level and the All Breeds Shows throughout Australia. I’ve spent my time on the Executive of Welsh Corgi Club of SA (vice president, committee member & life member). Currently hold the positions of secretary for both the WCC of SA and the National Welsh Corgi Council and a committee member of Adelaide District Working Dog Club of SA. I am a qualified Dogs SA Representative, a Junior Show Judge & a Group 5 training Judge. Skills I offer are: Organisational and management skills (show management, event organisation, catering, emergency management & health and safety). Experienced and skilled in writing policies & procedures. An ability and skills in; risk analysis, situation investigations, reporting and debriefing. Able to maintain public image and developing community relationships and a qualified & experienced Covid Marshall. If elected I will endeavour to push for system and policy improvements (especially discipline process/bullying/conflict of interest/conflict resolution issues). I will work for and with the membership and the betterment of Dogs SA.

BRIAN FIELDER – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term Fellow Members, I am seeking your support for my nomination for re-election to Council. I will shortly complete my second 3 year term as a Councillor. I have found it to be both challenging and rewarding. I take the responsibilities of my position on Council very seriously and have at all times acted in the best interests of the Association, our affiliated clubs and our members. As well as my position on Council, I have been a member of the Obedience Advisory Committee since 2006, including 13 years as Chair, and a member of the Investigative Committee since 2015. More recently I have been Chair of the Scent Work Advisory Committee and the Working Party that preceded it for the past two years. Earlier this year I was asked to fill the role of interim Chair of the Agility Advisory Committee, a term that finishes at the Special Meeting on 8th November 2021. Other initiatives I have been involved in this past year in addition to my normal Council duties include a review of SACA Rules as they apply to non-conformation disciplines, a review of the Offences and Codes contained within our Constitution and Rules and the penalties which should apply for any breaches. Over the past 40 plus years I have competed successfully in Conformation, Obedience and Agility, firstly with my Golden Retrievers then later and currently with German Shepherd Dogs. My involvement in the dog world began in 1977 when I purchased my first Golden Retriever and decided to take him to my local Obedience dog club with the simple intention to train him to be a well-behaved member of my family and the community. Shortly after becoming involved there I was encouraged to have a go at entering my dogs in shows, which opened up a whole new world. I am a Life Member of the Noarlunga City Obedience Dog Club, having served as an Instructor and in various positions on the Committee, including Secretary, and for the past 24 years as President. I also served several years on the Committee of the Golden Retriever Club during the 1980s. I am licenced to judge Obedience and Agility Trials and have judged in all States of Australia as well as a very interesting and eye-opening judging trip to Kuala Lumpur. From my background and experience with the administration of both Breed and Obedience clubs I am very aware of how important our Affiliated clubs are to the Association and our members and the challenges they face from time to time. During my working life I spent the vast majority of my career with the Australian Taxation Office, along the way earning Degrees in both Economics and Accounting. While for many years I worked in Audit and Investigation roles, in the latter years I moved into leadership and management positions. My experience has equipped me with a wide range of skills. As can be seen from my past history, I am very committed to our Association and work hard to ensure its long-term prosperity. I am also a strong supporter of our sporting disciplines and our affiliated clubs, which are the lifeblood of those disciplines. Without strong and viable clubs all disciplines will struggle to thrive as they should. If I am successful with my nomination I will continue to do my best to ensure that the interests of all Affiliates and their members receive the utmost consideration and support. I do not harbour any personal agenda and at all times my absolute loyalty is with the Association. If you wish to discuss any matter related to our Association and its operations I can be contacted on 0403 317 763 or by email at brifield@bigpond.net.au I thank you for your consideration. JASON SCHULTZ – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term I am seeking your support to join the Dogs SA Council. I have been a Dogs SA member for over 22 years, with Agility as my focus. But I have also been involved in a number of other dog related activities during his time. In addition to supporting my wife Kelly who exhibits our Border Collies in conformation. Additionally, my involvement and service includes Dogs SA affiliated club committees including the Agility Dog Club of SA, Border Collie Club of SA, and Gawler Dog Training Club. Likewise, I been held positions on Dogs SA Advisory Boards and Committees, such as the Flyball representative on the Obedience Advisory Committee and as a member of the Agility Advisory Committee. I participated in the 2016 SA Agility National organising committee and, more recently, volunteered to coordinate and manage all the planned demonstrations for the Festival of Dogs community day event (deferred to due C19 restrictions). During my working life, I have gained experience in a variety of fields, often holding supervisory and management positions. Since 2019 I have owned and managed a successful small business “Jason the Locksmith”. This combined experience, knowledge and skills will allow me to make strong contributions serving on Council. I have a very good understanding of the challenges people involved with all aspects of dog sports face. If elected to council I will endeavour to bring fresh ideas that benefit all members – whilst acting with openness, respect, honestly and integrity. My nomination is totally unselfish. I just wish to work with other like-minded members, and colleagues on council to drive the association into a successful future. Some may claim that they have Dogs SA’s best interests at heart. But I believe it important to consider what people actually do - not just what they say. In closing, I truly believe I would be an asset to council and believe that a vote for me is a vote for the future of Dogs SA. Please contact me if you have any relevant questions or concerns regarding the future of the association.
CONNIE REDHEAD – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term I have been a member of DOGS SA for over 50 years. I have served on DogsSA Council previously. I am an All Breeds Judge and a member of the Conformation Judges Training Panel. My husband and I ran a successful Boarding Kennel for many years until our recent retirement. I was involved with working closely with local District Councils in overseeing lost and abandoned dogs were safely rescued. I am also an accredited Kennel Inspector ensuring the keeping and welfare of dogs are maintained to at least the minimum standards as prescribed by DOGS SA and South Australian Government Legislation Some years ago, I was instrumental in starting the Australian Cattle Dog Club which has run Amenities shows for Dogs SA. So far, some $12000 has been donated by the Club to Dogs SA to be used for Members Benefit. I am passionate about the dog world and believe that all disciplines should be nurtured and that all should be encouraged to grow, have input and work in harmony to create and maintain a flourishing dog world. I find it distressing that the current climate in the dog scene appears to be of a disruptive and toxic nature. It is my intention with the help of others to try and resolve these issues and have a more harmonious atmosphere for the benefit of all in the dog world. Page 9
NICK GOUZOS – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term I have been a member of DogsSA for forty years. I am an All Breeds Judge, Examiner/Assessor and the Conformation Judges Training Panel Group Coordinator for the Toy group. I successfully breed and show Miniature Smooth Dachshunds and have a close involvement with several other breeds. I have taken early retirement after serving 35 years with the University of Adelaide and so feel that I now have the time to stand for council. At the present time DogsSA needs a strong and passionate Council. I feel I have the passion and knowledge to help this association achieve and maintain the stability it had in the past while spearheading it into the future. Some of the issues we need to address are: • Increasing and maintaining membership by smart promotion while acknowledging that every member, whatever their equally. • The promotion and preservation of pure bred breeds, while at the same time embracing the activities that non pedigree dogs can pursue. • Help and promote our individual clubs who are involved with our wide variety of dog pursuits. • Maintain the good relationships we have with Local Councils and DACO and keep South Australia "dog friendly". • Preserve and maintain our historical records for future generations. Never before has casting your vote been so important. Please use your vote to elect a Council that will cohesively pilot Dog SA into the future for the current and future members.
BEN TAYLOR – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term My name is Ben Taylor and I sincerely want to help you have a voice on council and sensibly influence decisions for the betterment of our Association. It is my desire to be the voice of reason for those that are quiet and unheard and to plead the case for struggling clubs... Having stepped away from exhibiting regularly for a few years to establish our new business at Wirrina Cove, I am now ready to commit to my next passion, which is the preservation and sustainability of Dogs SA into the future. We breed Bernese Mountain Dogs & I have shown for over 20 years, judged around the world, held many committee positions, including President & Vice President, won numerous high awards with our dogs both here and in America, was the Dogs SA delegate for Drafting and hosted the 2015 Dog Agility Nationals at our property. However, all this means nothing really when choosing a capable candidate for council... With pride I am known and recognised for displaying exceptionally good sportsmanship. I am humble enough to see reason when a good point is argued well, yet vocal enough to right injustices that often get glossed over. These traits put me in good stead to represent the best interests of the Association moving forward, without compromise or conflicting interests. I am a firm believer that “One who does not vote, has no right to complain” so please be counted and have your say. It is time for the dog fraternity to come together as a united front and work on how to reinvigorate passion for all dog sports. Dogs SA needs new blood in my opinion, a fresh view to take our association forward for the next generation. With your vote I promise to work hard, making your valuable vote count!

PATRICIA BUCKLEY – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term Hi everyone, I’m Patricia Buckley and I like to think of myself as an independent person with no allegiance to any other group and I would work hard to further the promotion of our association. Whilst in the work force, I gained valuable experience in managerial positions, working well within team environments and I am quite capable of liaising with others, a skill which can invaluable at times. Previously involved with the junior handler organising team for a number of years, also served on Projected Improvements Committee and for a while took on the position of treasurer for the Shetland Sheepdog Club. I’ve been involved with dogs all my life, firstly with Kelpies and German Shepherds we used for farm work. Long before I decided I wanted to show dogs I had been doing obedience with Rottweilers and later our Mastiffs. Currently we are showing our other breed the Estrela Mountain Dog with our first import arriving in 2013, we have worked hard to get the breed established here, bringing in bitches from UK and Portugal. I have been retired for some years now allowing me to spend more time with my dogs and family. I am a licensed judge for groups 5, 6, and 7 currently a trainee for group 1. Showing dogs should be a pleasurable experience and I hope we can all work together to ensure that it remains so.

NOTICE OF MEETING

TRACIE EDWARDS – Councillor 3 year term / Councillor 2 year term Dear Members, I would like you to consider my nomination for a fifth term on Council. It is vitally important that the Council has a mix of disciplines represented, in many ways I am an “All Rounder”, someone with knowledge across multiple disciplines, and a “regular” member whose thoughts and opinions are just like yours. Somebody passionate to make a difference, not just maintain status quo. As a Life Member, and current President of the Gundog Club of SA I have been involved with dogs since 1989, I have successfully competed in Agility, Obedience, Endurance and Retrieving, with over 10 years combined experience instructing Obedience and Agility. In 2021 I spent time as the chair of the Dogs SA Retrieving and Field Trial Advisory Committee. I have campaigned four breeds in the Conformation show arena including multiple Grand and Supreme Champions. I am an All Breeds licensed judge, an honour which took me 21 years to complete. Employed by UniSA I work with Industry and Government to raise much needed funds to undertake life changing research into anything from Cancer to Defence and better Agricultural equipment. This role has exposed me to the world of grants, which is an untapped source of funds available to not only Dogs SA but our many affiliated clubs through Government, Councils and Industry sources. I strongly believe that more should be done to take advantage of the many schemes available. I have an Advanced Diploma in Management specialising in Human Resources and have worked in the Manufacturing, Defence and the University sectors in Project Management, Recruitment, Grants, Bids and Tenders. I also have a Cert IV in Frontline Management and have attended a 2 day course on Advanced Not For Profit Governance. During my time on Council I have listened to the needs of the members and when possible taken action. This includes being the councillor who proposed the ANKC reinstate the original Grand Champion rules in 2011 and created the new Supreme Champion which was supported by Dogs SA and successfully adopted at the ANKC conference the same year. I also worked to get a Defribulator purchased for the grounds by the Projected Improvements Committee of which I was the Chair at the time. Focus areas for me include: • Finding alternate sources of income other than taxing members and affiliates • Improving our rules to cater for putting dogs out on breeders terms legally • Helping our disciplines to flourish, using promotion to increase participation and looking for solutions to pain points such as paid instructors not being able to judge • Implementing the current draft strategic plan (hopefully soon to be released) Please consider my nomination, should you wish to contact me to discuss any issues, please feel free to ring me on my mobile 0417 179 876 or by email mistypoint@chariot.net.au. Thank you for your time. Regards, Tracie Edwards
January 2022
JOHN JOSEPH DE LUCIA – For Councillor 2 year term Dear Members, I would like to nominate for Dogs SA Council and seek your support. I believe I have the necessary skills to fill this position based upon my work as a Senior Manager for an international company that dealt with finances, people, employment and recruitment. Furthermore, I am currently the President of the German Shepherd Dog Club of SA (GSDCSA), the largest single breed club in South Australia and a position I have now held for over 22 years. I have also held various other positions on the GSDCSA Committee since 1985. I have served on the Obedience Advisory Committee of SACA and was the main organiser for the Obedience Championships held at the Velodrome at Gepps Cross in 1998. I am passionate about pure bred dogs and our standing in the community for responsible dog ownership and breeding and welcome the opportunity to serve the Council. I am strong and determined and feel that I have a lot to offer Dogs SA Council in addition to being a voice for the members and am known to voice my opinion when required. I am available on my mobile 0491 610 096 or email, john.delucia1959@gmail.com

ELECTIONS, ELIGIBILITY, VOTING
RATIONALE: Members have requested over several elections why Dogs SA has not moved to electronic voting. Previous investigations identified the cost was excessive for the benefit. Recently it was identified that a company was able to conduct the elections electronically at a similar cost to the existing method. Incorporating the electronic option would not preclude those members without access to technology from casting their vote via mail. The proposed amendments to the constitution would enable the Association to utilize electronic voting in addition to posting voting for elections of Council. Current Rule (4) The Executive Officer shall arrange for an election notice to be published in the South Australian Canine Association Journal, calling for nominations and setting out the timetable for the conduct of the election.
Amended (8) Nominations must be delivered to or forwarded by post or electronic means so as to reach the Returning Officer by the close of nominations. Nominations shall close at 4.00 pm on the last Friday in October. 03/19 Current Rule (11) The Returning Officer shall forward the names of candidates and nominators to the Associations Executive Officer to establish whether the members are financial or unfinancial. On receipt of this information the Returning Officer may either accept or reject the nomination. In either case the Returning Officer shall advise the candidate of the outcome of his/her nomination. Amended (11) The Returning Officer shall forward the names of candidates and nominators to the Associations Executive Officer to establish whether the members are eligible for election. VOTING OF MEMBERS AT MEETINGS
The following Rules are renumbered but otherwise unchanged: (26) becomes (22) (27) becomes (23) (28) becomes (24) (29) becomes (25) (30) becomes (26)
RATIONALE: The Dogs SA Constitution in its address of the issue of voting at meetings under section 18. (a) uses generic terminology “any meeting of the Association” which, by inference would include meetings of Council. Amendment to this section of the Constitution makes the distinction between General meetings of the Association (Annual General Meeting and Extraordinary General Meetings) and Council meetings in the manner in which voting and attendance is accepted.
Clause 14.
Current Rule
MEETINGS OF COUNCIL
RATIONALE: Advances in technology now provide opportunity for remote meeting attendance. The current DogsSA Constitution does not distinguish between meetings of Council and other meetings of the Association and limits the voting rights of Councillors remotely accessing meetings of Council by using a generalisation under section 18a of the Constitution. Historically, Councillors have only been able to vote on issues raised at Council meetings if they are physically in attendance. COVID 19 created limitations on physical meeting attendance and technology came to the rescue with Zoom meetings becoming common place. Review of the Dogs SA Constitution indicate it is silent on the issue specifically regarding Council meetings but use generic terminology in its address of the issue of voting at meetings under section 14. Meetings of Council. It is proposed to provide for remote Council meeting attendance using digital technology through these amendments of the Constitution. Insert New Rule (b) All questions and matters arising at a meeting of Council (other than questions of order and procedure) shall be decided by the majority of the votes of Councillors present either physically or remotely (via technology) and entitled to vote at such meetings. Votes shall ordinarily be by show of hands. Where a majority of Councillors request a secret ballot to be undertaken in respect of any matter to be put to the meeting the Chairman shall direct the Executive Officer to conduct such secret ballots. 09/21 The following Rules 14. are renumbered but are unchanged: (b) becomes (c) (c) becomes (d) (d) becomes (e) (e) becomes (f) (g) becomes (i) Insert New Rule 14. (g) Any member of Council must attend in person a minimum of 8 ordinary meetings of Council in any period of one year from the date of his election and from year to year during his/her tenure as a Council member unless factors outside the influence of Council limit physical meeting attendance. 09/21
All questions and matters arising at any meeting of the Association (other than questions of order and procedure) shall be decided by the majority of the votes of members present and entitled to vote at such meetings. Votes shall ordinarily be by show of hands but if in any instance a vote by show of hands appears to the President or any member to be unsatisfactory or ambiguous then the President or such member shall be entitled to request a division. Where a majority of members request a secret ballot to be undertaken in respect of any matter to be put to the meeting the Chairman shall direct the Executive Officer to conduct such secret ballots. Amended All questions and matters arising at any general meeting of the Association (other than questions of order and procedure) shall be decided by the majority of the votes of members present and entitled to vote at such meetings. Votes shall ordinarily be by show of hands but if in any instance a vote by show of hands appears to the President or any member to be unsatisfactory or ambiguous then the President or such member shall be entitled to request a division. By instituting legal action against the Association would clearly be in breach of the Code. MOTION proposed by John Lewington
RATIONALE: My concern of the large variation in the amounts that people charge to judge the same dog show, e.g., at one particular show I learnt that some judges were charging $150.00 per show and my charge was only $70. We all judged the same amount of dogs over the weekend. I propose that the judging fee be built into the entry fee, clubs would have an idea of the entry for that weekend and so would roughly know how much they would have to pay the judges before they were contracted. My belief is that this would be a much fairer system for all concerned. I have spoken to a number of judges, both in South Australia and interstate and all have agreed with me. I base this on the system in the USA which appears to work very well. I would like to propose that a standard judging fee of $1.00 per dog judged be implemented for all dog shows in Australia, starting with South Australia. 13.

(Amended 10/10) 6.1.2 Module 2. Practical Experience Judge a minimum of fifty (50) dogs and additionally examine and critique a minimum fifty dogs (50) from the relevant Group. The breeds covered must be from, as wide a range as possible, but will include at least five (5) critiques from each of the five (5) Major Breeds as determined by the Member Body CJTC. This may be achieved by attending Field days or shows. All critiques to be countersigned on the day by a licensed judge for that breed who is not a Trainee Judge currently enrolled in the scheme and is, preferably, an Accredited Assessor, and who have themselves examined the dogs critiqued. Judging may be in the form of hands on experience by placing dogs at open shows, sweepstakes or field days, but not at breed lectures. We drove out along the coast in Alan’s Corvette before heading inland to their beautiful home in Thousand oaks; and arrived about 1pm just in time for lunch and a cold Budweiser to wash it down. I was introduced to the three resident Wolfhounds and their male Devlin took a particular liking to me and became my mate during my short stay there. That night we went out for dinner and I renewed my acquaintance with one of Americas great loves, food. The next day after bacon and eggs on the patio with the Wolfhounds overlooking the Californian ocean Alan decided to take me down to Mexico in the Corvette. We headed off about 10am and hit the freeway with plenty of time to get to the border then disaster we blew a tyre just past Hollywood in East Los Angeles. Alan pulled off the freeway into a Mexican suburb. Well we might just have well been in Mexico, no one spoke English and no one was prepared to offer any help. I must explain the Corvettes do not carry a spare tyre there is no room for it only a small composite tyre that will take you as far as the nearest garage and has a speed limit of 55 miles per hour. Also you need to be a car mechanic to find it and then get it out of the car before you change it. The phone in the car had been disconnected (no mobiles) so Alan said he would go for a walk to find a phone to call for assistance so would I stay there and guard the car. I looked across the road there were about 5 Mexicans sitting on a porch watching what was going on. I walked over and went up to them and said do you speak English? no one answered, I then said Ceazer Charves Great boxer (he was a Mexican legend) and then they all started to talk to me. Boxing can open doors wherever you go. The Mexicans love their boxing. When I told them I had a gym in Australia and trained fighters they all shook my hand and gave me a cold beer. We sat chatting about boxing past and current champions for an hour, not much point talking about dogs to them so I told them I was visiting the wildcard gym in California the home of a number of world class Mexican fighters. Alan got back with the mechanic. I said goodbye to my new boxing friends and we took off to find a garage and get a new tyre fitted. It was now too late to go to Mexico and I felt like I had been there anyway. We settled for beers on the patio with the Wolfhounds and home cooked dinner with Alan’s wife Josie when she arrived home from work. I can think of a lot worse ways to spend an afternoon.

RETRIEVING & FIELD TRIAL “HALL OF FAME”
2022 Nominations In the first nineteen years of elections, the Australian National Kennel Council Ltd has received nominations for 56 dogs and 41 people to be considered for induction into the Retrieving & Field Trial Hall of Fame. From the nominations received 34 outstanding dogs and 24 exceptional people have been inducted. The criteria for the two categories for selection are the following: Outstanding Gundogs (must be permanently retired from further competition and have not competed for the past 12 months, or be deceased) Their record as a winning dog i.e., CLUB – STAKE – DATE – JUDGE PLACE and/or Their production record. The eligibility for a dog should be based on its entire competitive career and previous record as a producer, not merely for a particular win or for a heroic deed within the field and retrieving trial sphere. Subject to the receipt of a formal application, dogs that have been awarded the title of Grand Champion and have gained a total number of points equal to, or greater than, twice the total number required for that award, shall automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Such applications must include full particulars and a brief resume of the dog’s career. Subject to the receipt of a formal application, dogs winning at least two National Championships in the same discipline shall automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Such applications must include full particulars and a brief resume of the dog’s career. 2. Prominent Persons: Their record of a broad combination of accomplishments as: Club official Judge Owner Handler The distinction of nomination should be accorded to those who have made outstanding contributions to the field or retrieving game. Nominees should be givers to the sport and not takers. Nominations are now being called for the current year. In addition to applications submitted in relation to Outstanding Gundogs 1 (d) and 1(e), a maximum of two other outstanding gundogs and two prominent persons may be elected each year. Nomination: Clubs or Members may nominate DOGS and PEOPLE considered worthy of awards, including full details of accomplishments within the above categories and with verification. In the case of dogs, nominations should include the full name, title, owner and date of birth. [Please note it is a condition of nomination that the nominator/s provides accurate written material supporting the nomination. In the absence of such accurate supporting material, or should the supporting material later prove to be inaccurate in areas of significance, the Selection Panel for the ANKC Ltd Retrieving & Field Trial Hall of Fame reserves the right to reconsider its decision and if appropriate, delete the name of the Prominent Person or Outstanding Dog from the list of inductees.] 2. Nominations shall close on the 31 May 2022 at respective Member Body offices for forwarding to ANKC Ltd. 3 Please use the proforma nomination forms that are available from all Member Body offices and the ANKC Ltd website at www.ankc.org.au/HallOfFame/?id=1096

ANKC LTD SURVEY ROTTWEILER OWNERS In accordance with Item 7.2.1 of the October 2021 ANKC Board meeting minutes an online survey is now available from the link provided below where ANKC is seeking feedback from owners of Rottweilers regarding the following proposal. The current regulation under Regulations Part 6 The Register & Registrations is as follows: 8.9 Rottweiler 8.9.1 For litters of Rottweilers born where the parents have been born after 1.1.97, these parents must show results of X-rays for hips and elbows. (Amended 10/13 – 5.6.4) Proposal to add as 8.9.2: Effective immediately, any Rottweiler born a Natural Bobtail will be eligible to be registered on the Limit Register only and flagged NOT TO BE UPGRADED. Rationale: The adopted standard (FCI Standard No: 147) for the Rottweiler within Australia has now been updated as of 24 July 2018. A significant change to this updated standard is that it now reflects the length of the tail: “while positioned along the leg, the tail reaches approximately to the hocks or is a bit longer”, and the Natural Bobtail is listed as a disqualifying fault. The following referenced attachments are available from the links provided below: 1. Section of FCI Standard No: 147 – 24/7/2018 listing Natural Bobtails as a Disqualifying Fault. 2. Copy Email from Prof Peter Friedrich outlining the ADRK reasons for not recognising NBT’s in the Rottweiler population. The online survey can now be accessed from: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HR7JS7K The link is also available from the ANKC website at: https://ankc.org.au/AboutUs/?id=3319 Please note responses to the survey are required by COB 7 March 2022.

AGILITY NEWS Summary of the 2020/21 Agility trialling year - What a year it’s been! 2021 saw the introduction of the ‘new’ national Agility Rules, which came into effect in January. In addition to updating a range of rules across Agility, Jumping and Games, an Elite level of competition was introduced. Collectively these changes are intended to support safety and performance developments in a sport that is evolving rapidly. 2021 also continued to be impacted by the Covid pandemic, with club training being curtailed and some trials were sadly cancelled, particularly during the earlier months. It was especially disappointing that our three major regional events, in Mount Gambier and the Riverland, were unable to be held, in significant part to interstate Covid restrictions. The Royal Adelaide Show also fell victim to Covid. So, while adjusting to Covid-safe arrangements had some challenges, competitors were rapt to be able to get back into competitions when they were held, and the AAC extends its gratitude to the work of committees and volunteers who undertook the extra work required to conduct Covid-safe trials. And to competitors who abided by changing Covid-safe requirements. A summary of key activities and outcomes dealt with by the AAC are as follows: Meetings: Aside from the normal AAC meetings, one Judges Panel meeting was held, two Judges Meetings were conducted and one Competitors Meeting was held. The purpose of these meetings was primarily to discuss implications of the ‘new’ Agility Rules, and to progress development of SA Guidelines to support these new rules and also updated not-for-competition rules. There was no trainee judges program conducted this year. Regular AAC Tasks: Key tasks have included streamlining arrangements for the measuring of dogs in accordance with existing and new policies; over 20 dogs were measured this year! Other tasks included maintenance and provision of timing devices to trials, addressing queries and incidents that arise each month, along with consideration of safety issues, facilitating preparation of Dogs SA Journal articles, and ongoing work to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of AAC functions. Grants to Clubs: The AAC was delighted to approve grants of up to $1500 per Club for the purchase of new equipment and materials and updating of existing agility equipment; to be acquitted by 31st December 2021. State Championships: Having been cancelled in 2020, these were successfully held with interstate and local judges and in accordance with Covid-safe requirements. This was no mean feat given the short timeframe to organise, and uncertainties around both Covid and Munno Para Club’s temporary grounds. An extraordinary level of volunteer support and great sponsorships helped in delivering a terrific event with minimal budget expense (a financial summary was tabled at the AGM). 93 dogs competed with approximately 620 runs undertaken (and this without the usual interstate competitors). A range of new initiatives were introduced to encourage participation, safety and enjoyment, including the popular Teams event and Veteran Dogs event. The nurturing of a refreshingly positive, friendly atmosphere was widely appreciated. Other initiatives are continuing to be employed at trials (e.g. the treats table). A comprehensive review of the championships was undertaken in order to identify things that worked well, as well as insights and lessons to inform ongoing improvements for future events. Look out for an even more fabulous state champs in 2022! Not-for-Competition Rules: After significant discussion, updated NFC rules for agility were finally endorsed and introduced into SA in mid-2021. There are four categories, including Junior handlers and Veteran dogs, but of particular interest were provisions allowing pre-Novice dogs to gain experience under competition conditions, whilst handlers with dogs who may be experiencing challenges can change their entry to NFC on the day of competition. Agility Database and Annual Awards: A key AAC responsibility in liaison with the DogsSA office is the maintenance of the agility records database. Under the stewardship of Roz Short and Nadege Wauchope a review of the criteria pertaining to the calculation of awards was undertaken. This review revealed a need to rationalise the annual awards and following research of various options, a new Annual Agility Awards policy has been approved and published, for the competition year that commenced in October 2021. Through the process of maintaining the database, it is terrific to highlight that there been five new Agility Champions crowned this year. Of course there

Owned by Sophie Wright have very many other achievements and it is wonderful to see so many doghandler teams entering and progressing through the sport. Equally, we salute the passing of some remarkable dogs, all of whom were loved companions as well as being agility dogs. Management and Communication Arrangements: The AAC has continued to liaise with Council members and Dogs SA personnel to progress development of policies, rules and procedures by which the sport is managed in SA. A highlight this year is the adoption by Council of a rule enabling advisory committees to appoint their own Chairperson; and consideration of how this will work in practice. The AAC acknowledges that Dogs SA itself has experienced challenges that have impacted on strategic and management capacities this year and is looking forward to the possibility of working more closely with Council in 2022 to better address matters of concern to the SA agility community. These include: • continuing to advocate for amendments to the SACA Rules as they relate to supporting development of agility in a way that is consistent with good governance and with interstate and international practices; • continuing to strengthen governance, roles, responsibilities and communication mechanisms between agility community members, the AAC and Dogs SA management. The Committee has continued to utilise social media and the Dogs SA Journal to share key information with the community and obtain views and engagement in proposed developments, but more can be done with this. A number of interesting articles have been elicited from agility members for inclusion the Journal; these contributions have been much appreciated. Other Activities: Work is well advanced in researching and developing selection criteria for the State Team for 2022 Nationals. Equipment safety has arisen at various times this year; reviews and resource material has been gathered and will be further addressed in preparation for the recommencement of the trialling season after the summer break. With the rapid evolution of agility globally and take-up of new approaches (through online learning sites and an increasing number of experts conducting workshops in SA), and the introduction of the new Elite class, options in supporting judges and instructors in ongoing skills development in course design and association training implications have been explored; one of these has included subsidising fees for judges to complete an international online training program (which will roll over into 2022). Sincere thanks are extended to Brian Fielder for taking on the AAC Chairperson role in 2021, and to Kerry Thomas who has been on the committee for two years. Both are stepping down in 2022; in various ways, Brian and Kerry have provided valuable contributions in enabling development of aspects of agility in SA during their tenure. On behalf of the agility community, the individual and collective efforts of the other five members of the AAC are also acknowledged: Nadege Wauchope (secretary), Roz Short, Chloe Dunlop, Jason Shultz, and Vanessa Loughlin. Thanks are also extended to the Dogs SA admin staff, and particularly those members of Council who have made an effort to engage with agility activities; your efforts in supporting the agility discipline are recognised and appreciated. Finally, a big ‘thank you’ to the Clubs and the agility community for continuing to find ways to promote and participate in this awesome sport of ours – here’s to Agility, and 2022!

Meet the Juniors RHYS CLARKE
My name is Rhys and I am 8 years old. Even though my family have showed dogs for a very long time, I only started showing dogs in 2021. I was very excited when my Mum and Dad told me that I could have my very own dog and was even more excited when I found out that my new best friend was going to be a Pug and he was exactly the same age as me! Even though his real name is Rory, we mostly call him Wug and I think he likes this name the best. We have had lots of fun together already – Wug comes to school, he loves it when all of my friends give him lots of pats. He likes to ride in the car and have lots of naps too but his very favourite thing to do is to have snacks. So far we have been in the ring a few times and we always have a good time. I like dog shows because I get to spend time with my family and Wug likes them a lot too because at dog shows there are always extra snacks. My favourite show was when Wug won a Runner Up Neuter In Group and the judge said I was good enough handler to show her dogs! This year I am excited to keep showing in Junior Handlers and in Neuter class and maybe Wug will get to be a Neuter Champion one day! I love to chat about lots of things, especially about my Wug, so if you see me at a dog show, please say Hello!

PART IX Judges A General Conduct of Judges c12. (h) New Rule For Trick Dog Test a judge may compete at the Test for which they are appointed to judge. (01/22) Rationale: There are a limited number of Trick Dog judges and with Tricks being a new discipline, it is difficult for judges to compete and obtain titles with their dogs. It is important that we give every opportunity for judges to compete
