President’s Report

Firstly, I would like to thank the organizers of the Dog of the Year event for 2022. It was a well-run event and Congratulations to all the winners. Neuter of the Year was Donna McClarty’s Pug – Gr Neut Ch, Ch Jaditi Princess Shelby. Puppy of the Year was Kylie Tilley and Tina Sunmans Australian Shepherd, Voncronan Send Noods. Dog of the Year was Kylie Tilley and Tina Sunman’s Chihuahua (Smooth Coat), Ch Voncronan Diamond Desire at Skyeway. The Dogs SA Junior Handler Committee also hosted the National Junior Handler final as part of the event and this was won by Emily Perkins, Victoria. Also, a special thanks to Blackhawk, the major sponsor for the events with some wonderful prizes.

As many are already aware Ann Farndell has retired from Dogs SA after 29 years of service as the Finance Officer. Ann will be missed from the office and along with many others we wish her the best for the future in her retirement. Thank you, Ann, for your years of service. Nova Mahajabin has taken over from Ann as the Finance & Administration Officer. Please all welcome Nova to the fold when visiting or contacting the office.

November sees the majority of the Dogs SA Advisory committees hold their Special Meetings. These meetings are very important to the sports they represent, and it is your opportunity to have your say on the future of the sports. The time and location of these meetings are on the Dogs SA website and published on page 8 of the September Dogs SA Journal. I will attend as many as I can but cannot always attend all due to competing priorities.

On a sour note, Dogs SA office recently received a threatening card from an anonymous member threating violence against a Councilor. This type of behaviour is cowardly and does nothing to rectify the issues they may have with either Dogs SA or the specific Councilor. Furthermore it could also be considered a criminal offence and as such has been handed to SAPOL for investigation. If you are the member reading this, I would suggest you have a good long look at yourself and your behaviour as it is not what a normal person would consider acceptable.

Just a reminder that voting closes in the Local Council Elections at 5PM, Thursday 10 November 2022. You may ask why are these important to us. Dog bylaws are the responsibility of your local Council. They set how many dogs you may have and what they charge for dog registration, not the state government. They will also have a strong voice in the upcoming review of the Dog and Cat Management Act which is due this year. Canvas the candidates in your local area and open their eyes to the importance of companion dogs. This is especially important to the local obedience clubs which are situated on Council land and in many cases supported by the local councils. I cannot confirm about most councils in SA however Adelaide Plains has 2 dog people already as elected members and they are re standing. Along with them the existing council is dog friendly with minimal increases in dog registrations over the past 4 years. Be inquisitive and vote wisely in this election.

Finance Officer Dogs SA

On the 30th September 2022, we bid farewell to Ann after 29 years of service within the Dogs SA Office. Ann’s experience and knowledge of many disciplines has been invaluable not only to Dogs SA, but to other state controlling bodies who sought her advice over the years. During Ann’s time with Dogs SA, incredible improvements were made to David Roche Park which was purchased in 1989 as a basic football and soccer oval complex and now is a dedicated facility for Canine exhibitors. She was also present for the change from the manual card registration system to the current national database. Her personal involvement with dogs has always been with her beloved Shetland Sheepdogs which she has successfully trained and trialled gaining numerous titles in Obedience, Tracking, Agility, Herding, Rally and Tricks. For more than 25 years she has undertaken the role of Committee Member, Trial Manager, Trial Secretary, Obedience Instructor and Steward for several affiliated clubs.

From the Council, Staff and Members, we wish Ann the very best in her retirement.

Queen Elizabeth’s first Corgi breeder among founding members of Adelaide Hills dog club (from ABC news)

Queen Elizabeth's love of corgis was well-known, but few know that it all began with a puppy called 'Dookie' from a dog breeder who would go on to set up the Adelaide Hills Kennel Club.

Thelma Gray was a pioneer in breeding corgis in the early 1920s, when the little herding dogs were well-known in Wales, but not so much in England.

In 1933, the Duke of York, who would later become King George VI, asked Ms Gray to bring three corgi puppies to Buckingham Palace for his young daughters Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret to choose from.

The dark-chestnut coloured puppy called 'Dookie', would become the first in a long line of Pembroke Corgis owned by the queen throughout her life.

Thelma Gray was a well-respected breeder of corgis in England, a senior judge at shows and even wrote a book about the breed.

In 1975, she moved to Australia and bought a property at Coromandel Valley.

After bushfires devastated the area in 1980, Ms Gray helped set up the Adelaide Hills Kennel Club, where the members of today are proud of their royal connection.

Fellow founding member Lesley Mackness said the queen kept in contact with Ms Gray over the years, forming a friendship over their shared love of corgis.

Ms Mackness said when Ms Gray died in 1984, the queen presented the club with a sum of money which was used to buy a trophy.

"It's purely a personal gift between Her Majesty and Thelma," she said.

"It's not only a local connection, it's an international connection. "There is no other club, dog or horse of any description that has had anything from Her Majesty."

"It's very special, and the queen actually came out here in 2002 and we managed to have a number of winning corgis presented to Her Majesty in the grounds of Government House."

Kitty Flynn, 82, who has been showing corgis for nearly 60 years, said she can understand why the queen enjoyed the canine companionship for so long.

"You fall in love with a dog and a breed and if you genuinely love the breed, you don't swap and change, you mould into that breed and it's like a personality thing," she said. "You just fall in love with them."

Ms Flynn's corgi 'Jimmy' was the last recipient of the perpetual trophy and will relinquish the honour to 'Pemvale Fox n Sox', who took out Sunday's competition.

PART II MEMBERSHIP

A GENERAL Classes of Membership New Rule

1. (g) Complimentary Membership: (10 /22)

A person 18 years and over that has a current Membership provided to them as a Complimentary Membership.

(i) Complimentary Members shall be entitled to be an Ordinary Member of a Committee of an Affiliate Member and participate in all activities of an Affiliated Member but shall not hold any Office Bearer position on the Committee of an Affiliate (Office Bearer includes President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.)

Complimentary Members are not entitled to; vote at any meeting of the Association; be elected or appointed to any office of the Association; register a Kennel Prefix or apply for the registration of any puppies bred; act as an Official at any Exhibition; or receive a hard copy Journal.

(ii) Complimentary Members who wish to join the Association as an Ordinary Member during the course of the Complimentary Membership may do so. The Ordinary Membership fee will be such as a new Ordinary Member joining respective of the date in the membership year

PART IX JUDGES

A GENERAL Current Rule

6. No Judge shall adjudicate upon or judge any dog within a period of twelve calendar months after;

(d) that Judge is the owner, an employee or has an interest in a private training facility where the dog has received training.

(e) except Veterinary care or attention in any discipline at any Affiliate Member activity, any official Judges Training Scheme, SACA Ring training and Junior Handlers competitions sanctioned by the SACA (Training for the purpose of this rule means physically handling the dog, instructing people for reward, gift or favour); or (01/22)

(f) except Dances with Dogs where only one member of the judging panel appointed for that competition may be a private instructor and that judge must also instruct Dances with Dogs on an ongoing basis at an Affiliate. (01/22) Amended to read

One year instructing (aspiring time does not qualify) 15 pts

Two years or more instructing 30 pts

Trial Manager (for a minimum of four official trials) 20 pts

Other Agility Title: AD/JD, ADX/JDX, ADM/JDM, ADO/JDO, GD/GDX/GDM, SD/SDX/SDM, SPD/SPDX/SPDM per Title (each Title only counted once) 15 pts

Chief Ring Stewarding (Mandatory minimum of three to a maximum of five at ten points per appointment) 30 to 50 pts

An Aspiring Judge may aspire for the Agility, Jumping, Snooker, Gamblers and Strategic Pairs licences or nominate either a single or any combination of the available licences.

The Retrieving and Field Trials Advisory committee will conduct retrieving training for beginners in the off leash area at Dogs SA, on the following Tuesday nights:

November 8, 15, 22 and 29, December 6 and 13.

Sessions will run from 6 to 7 pm and are for Dogs SA members with Main or Limited Register Gundogs only who are interested in competing in Retrieving Trials for Gundogs.

It is envisaged that dogs taking part in these training sessions will have basic obedience ie walk at heel and come when called (on lead if necessary).

What to bring:

Dog

Lead plus a long lead if necessary

Water bowl

Crate or some form of containment when not working

not leave the dog in your car on a hot night)

Dummy for retrieving, dumbbell or favourite toy

Chair for yourself
