President’s Report

One would not know it with the persistent rain and cold weather but yes we are well into Spring. Spring brings to a close many of our Winter sports including Lure Coursing and Sledding. Both of these sports are gaining popularity and it is hoped that after the Summer break they will come back as strong as ever.

Adelaide Royal Show is done and dusted for another year and congratulations to the winners in all of the events. Agility was again a highlight for the public with the stands being full to a point where the security had to close the pavilion to reduce the public numbers for safety. The temporary facilities for benching worked well during the event and the vast majority were just happy to be back at the Royal and showing their dogs off to the general public. In this month’s journal there is a copy of the layout for the new basketball pavilion being constructed next to the existing pavilion. As you can see it is larger than the existing with many more facilities. The facility will be fully operational by the 2023 Royal Show and dog exhibitors will be benched in the existing facility as we were a number of years ago and compete in the new area. This may be subject to change but is the plan at the moment. Either way we will have a bright new facility.

As the year draws to an end, many of our affiliates will be holding their AGM’s and will be calling on ordinary members to come and join the clubs as either simply a member or to be more active and join committees. All of the Dogs SA affiliates are made up of volunteers and that is what keeps the costs down. If you have the time, it is not onerous to join a club and go on a committee, you will see what goes on and have a better understanding of running an event. As usual I will attend as many AGM’s as I can but it is impossible to attend all.

Council at its August meeting discussed and accepted a number of fee changes for the coming 2023 year. Yes some will still go up by a reduced CPI, however a number of the fees have also been reduced to assist the affiliates keep costs down but remain viable themselves. In short, some of the reductions include:

Reducing the event dog levy to $2.80 per entry and the country levy to just 25% of the metropolitan entry.

Changing the cost of hosting an event so that the first 2 over a cluster would be at the full rate and the remainder would be at ½ the rate.

Reducing the cost of membership by $20 for those who do not wish to have a hard copy of the Journal each month but still receive it electronically.

It is not intended that these reductions be utilised to allow clubs to reduce entry fees but it will assist them in staying viable themselves. Clubs must do their due diligence and formulate accurate budgets for their respective events and adjust entry as appropriate. Exhibitors must also realize that the cost of entries will go up the same as the cost of living has. It is not realistic to think that the Association or the affiliates can continue to cover the additional costs being imposed on them.

As many of us are rate payers in a number of Council areas it is now local election time. With it getting harder to keep dogs, approach your local candidate and find out what their views are on the keeping of dogs. In the Adelaide Plains Council there are 2 dog people standing for re-election, those being Terry-Ann Keen and myself. Along with us the current Council is very supportive of the Animal Husbandry area in Lewiston so I would like you to consider this when casting your vote, and please do vote it is vitally important.

AGILITY NEWS

The AAC Special General Meeting and EOY presentation night with be held on Monday, November 7th at 7pm in the Marsula Brine room, David Roche Park, Cromwell Road, Kilburn.

The 2022 season, 1st/10/2022 - 30th/9/2022 is the first that has been operating under the new rules.

The new rules have been available for some time on the Dogs SA agility website.

Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the current rules and the eligibility for awards.

The results will be collated after 1/10/2022.

This season the AAC would like to acknowledge competitors that gained titles during the 2022 Season with a sash. This is regardless of how long it took to achieve the title.

If you would like to receive your sash/sashes at the presentation night, please complete the form that can be found on Facebook or the agility website and return it to the secretary@agilitysa.net prior to 22/10/2022.

No sashes will be presented without the completion of the form. If you require one after that night, it will be up to you to organise it with the AAC.

SACA Rule Amendments Effective 1 October 2022

PART II MEMBERSHIP

A GENERAL

Classes of Membership

New Rule

1. (g) Complimentary Membership: (10 /22)

A person 18 years and over that has a current Membership provided to them as a Complimentary Membership.

(i) Complimentary Members shall be entitled to be an Ordinary Member of a Committee of an Affiliate Member and participate in all activities of an Affiliated Member but shall not hold any Office Bearer position on the Committee of an Affiliate (Office Bearer includes President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.)

Complimentary Members are not entitled to; vote at any meeting of the Association; be elected or appointed to any office of the Association; register a Kennel Prefix or apply for the registration of any puppies bred; act as an Official at any Exhibition; or receive a hard copy Journal.

(ii) Complimentary Members who wish to join the Association as an Ordinary Member during the course of the Complimentary Membership may do so. The Ordinary Membership fee will be such as a new Ordinary Member joining respective of the date in the membership year

PART IX JUDGES

A GENERAL

Current Rule

6. No Judge shall adjudicate upon or judge any dog within a period of twelve calendar months after;

(d) that Judge is the owner, an employee or has an interest in a private training facility where the dog has received training.

(e) except Veterinary care or attention in any discipline at any Affiliate Member activity, any official Judges Training Scheme, SACA Ring training and Junior Handlers competitions sanctioned by the SACA (Training for the purpose of this rule means physically handling the dog, instructing people for reward, gift or favour); or (01/22)

(f) except Dances with Dogs where only one member of the judging panel appointed for that competition may be a private instructor and that judge must also instruct Dances with Dogs on an ongoing basis at an Affiliate. (01/22)

Amended to read

PART IX – JUDGES

A GENERAL

12. (c) A Judge may enter and act as a Handler for a dog/s registered in his name/s at an Exhibition for Tracking, Retrieving, Field, Dances with Dogs, Lure Coursing or Trick Dog Test at which they are appointed to judge. (01/22)

Practical Assessment – Refer to ANKC Ltd Regulation 8

Current Agility, Jumping, Snooker, Gamblers and Strategic Pairs practical examination the Trainee Judge must provide copies for the Examining Panel of all their course designs appropriate to the licence/s that the Trainee Judge has nominated; the Examining Panel will determine the classes which the Trainee Judge will be assessed; the Agility Judges Licence will be assessed on at least two of the five available classes; the Jumping Judges Licence will be assessed on at least two of the five available classes; the Snooker Judges Licence will be assessed on at least two of the three available classes; the Gamblers Judges Licence will be assessed on at least two of the three available classes; the Strategic Pairs Judges Licence will be assessed on at least two of the three available classes; the Trainee Judge must be tested on at least five dogs for each determined class.

Failure in any part of the practical assessment for the nominated licence means that the entire examination for that licence is failed.

PART XIV OFFENCES

A GENERAL Rule Rescinded

4. Any Member promoting, judging, making an entry for, or in any way officiating at an Event conducted by an unrecognised organisation, shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules unless prior approval has been granted by the Executive Officer. Maximum Penalty $1000 (07/22)

Scent work is gaining momentum in SA!

So far this year, the Scent Work Advisory Committee (SWAC) has conducted 3 trials – our inaugural trial was held in April, a double trial was held in June, and we have another 2 trials scheduled for 14 and 16 October.

Mock trials have also been held by Gawler Dog Training Club, and another is to be held at Para Districts Dog Training Club on 1 October. Gawler is also holding a single element trial at the end of October. You could say that October is going to be one big sniff fest.

Several affiliated clubs have also commenced training in scent work.

The big news for this month is that we have 10 new trainee scent work judges! SWAC would like to welcome the following people to the Scent Work Judges’ Training Program: Tony Brennan, Helen Davis, Nicole Elkins, Pat Fickling, Anne Greenwood, Julianne Henry, Julia Mills, Jean Milnes, Carmel Nottle and Lynne Stapylton. We wish you all well in your training, and look forward to competing under you in the future. Also, as more of you start on your scent work trialling journey, we remind you of the following rules:

• Rule 6.1(b) - Advanced: For dogs that have qualified for the Scent Work Novice title or have gained two (2) Qualifying Certificates in the Novice class for an Element as part of qualifying towards the relevant Scent Work Element title.

• Rule 6.2.2 - A dog which has completed two (2) Qualifying Certificates in any Element at the Novice level or three (3) Qualifying Certificates in any Element at the Advanced level may not compete further in that Element at that level.

• Rule 8.1.3 - At any trial a dog may be entered in only one (1) class within an Element.

The practical version of what this means - you cannot enter Novice and Advanced in the same Element at the same trial (eg: Novice Exterior and Advanced Exterior). You can only enter Advanced if you have your SWN title OR if you have 2 passes in a particular element. For example, if you have 2 passes in Novice Containers, but don't have your SWN, you can enter Advanced Containers. However, if you don't have your SWN and have only 1 pass in Novice Containers, you must enter Novice Containers.

If you are entered in a trial and get a second pass in an element at Novice level, or a third pass in an element at Advanced level at another trial, prior to the date of close of entries for the trial entered, you must upgrade to the next class. If the class is not offered (eg: Excellent), the trial secretary is required to refund your entry fees already paid, or provide you with a credit towards future trial entries.

Please make sure you read and become familiar with the Rules, which are freely available on the ANKC website. The rules are your friend, and even to seasoned scent workers, require constant reading and re-reading.

Finally, the first special general meeting of SWAC will be held on Tuesday, 8 November 2022 at 7.00 pm. If you have an interest in scent work, we encourage you to attend. Please refer to the advertisement elsewhere in this journal. There are two positions available on the committee for the 2023 year. Please consider nominating so that you can play a part in the future growth of this wonderful discipline in South Australia.

History of the Murray River Retriever

As the Murray is now accepted as an ANKC Ltd recognised breed, registered Murrays may be entered in Championship Shows and Retrieving & Field Trials in addition to Agility, Obedience & Rally, Dances with Dogs Competitions and other ANKC trialling activities.

Through the dedicated work of the Murray River Retriever Association (MRRA) Committee and many others, Murrays were accepted by Dogs Australia onto the Sporting Register as an Associate Gundog in 2017. This enabled Murrays to compete in Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs (RATG), to be catalogued as MRR in other eligible trials and to be kept entire for Council registration. It also allowed Victorian based Murrays to be used for hunting and retrieving as Victorian legislation restricts eligibility to breeds recognised by Dogs Australia.

Following further collaboration between the MRRA and Dogs Australia in October 2021, it was announced the Murray River Retriever would be accepted as a recognised breed by Dogs Australia on 1st January 2022, making the Murrays the first pedigreed Australian Gundog.

The origin of the Murray River Retriever, also known as the Murray or Murrays, is traced back as early as the mid-1800’s in Australia and appears to have been breeding relatively true to type since 1894. The original imported breeds forming the Murray are obscure, however DNA testing undertaken in 2014 shown that pure Murrays are not related to any other modern breed of dog. The closest markers to any other breed are to the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

The most likely history based on the settlements of Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales along the Murray River indicates that Murrays are from British and Irish heritage leading back to the Southern County Spaniel and Northern Water Dog of Ireland of the early 1800’s that are also commonly found in Britain and were bred into other breeds, namely the Tweed Water Spaniel or Norfolk Retriever. These dog breeds are now all extinct. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever may have an undetermined common ancestry or have been cross-bred in the development of the Murray in the mid-1800’s in Australia to develop a retriever fit for purpose along the River Murray.

The Murray River Retriever was known by various names depending on where along the Murray-Darling people settled and worked. The breed is also believed to have been popular with Australian indigenous people as a hunting companion in the 1800’s and among the First Nation people on the Coorong and Lake Alexandrina regions in SA.

Today Murrays are still used for retrieving game, ducks, flushing and retrieving quail and tracking deer, foxes and pigs. Murray have also been trained in many other areas including Tracking, Search and Rescue, Assistance Dogs, Companion animals, Protection and Bomb Detection Work as well as beloved family pets.

The first Murrays shown at a conformation show on 1st April 2022 were bred by Rodney and Karen Howard of the Barokamurray prefix. These 5-7 months old pups created much interest and have had great success with Group Awards in Baby, Minor and Puppy under Australian and International judges who have acknowledged their quality. On 3rd July 2022 Barokamurray Cowboy Tequila (Jojo) became the first Australian Champion MRR in Australia at just 7 months, followed by his sister Barokamurray Beatingroundtbush (Bea) on 9th July 2022.

Having the MRR accepted as a pedigree dog promotes them in Australia and internationally and allows them to compete in Australian Gundog Trials which are restricted to pedigree Gundogs only.

To register a Murray River Retriever with Dogs Australia, the owner needs to be a member of the MRRA and their relevant Dogs Australia State or Territory body, the dog requires a four generation pedigree MRRA pedigree and a letter of confirmation from the MRRA Registrar approving the transfer to the Dogs Australia register. Persons interested obtaining information about upcoming litters eligible for registration with Dogs Australia may contact the MRRA.
