President’s Report

As the year progresses so does the work being completed in the office. The Executive Officer has been approved by Council to take on an additional staff member under contract to complete the uploads into the new Dogs SA Web site. This has been a long task particularly in acquiring the material to make it conducive to the public. We were after not just photos of competition but also photos which show the softer and rewarding side of owning a companion animal. This is coming along and hopefully will be out soon.

March also saw the conduct of the Annual General Meeting of Dogs SA. I cannot report much on that now but will have more details on the meeting and the general discussion held after the business session. These general discussions are important to the management of Dogs SA as it is an open forum for members to discuss issues they may have with Council.

The old office is now up and operational as a meeting room which will take the pressure off the Marsula Brine Rooms and leave them primarily for larger meetings and use on event days as the main office. The area has chairs and tables as well as a sink and hot water.

There are several grounds improvements being developed at the moment including the BBQ area and canteen servery. Both of these have served us well over the years but are getting old and would no longer meet current food handling guidelines. These were also considered suitable for upgrade as they also provided a good source of revenue for the Association and affiliates who staff the canteen. There has been a number of complaints about the condition of the grounds at the moment. The office has been liaising with the grounds staff to rectify the situation and it is hoped an improvement will be seen shortly. It may mean some pain as rings are closed for maintenance however exhibitors will be notified of any closures to lessen the inconvenience.

A major initiative of Council at the moment is the rewriting of the Dogs SA Constitution. The draft is now coming into its final stages and the membership will be consulted by way of reviewing the document and an open forum to express their views prior to a Special General Meeting of the members which will be held to vote on its adoption.

As the weather now starts to cool, please remember that shelter and warmth is now required for our beloved friends, so look after them.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS

Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)

As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:

1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.

2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)

3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.

4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.

5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)

(a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20)

(b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20)

(c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (11/21)

(d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20)

(e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20)

(f) A current veterinary certificate is defined as a certificate dated within three months prior to the mating. (11/21)

6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.

7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)

8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.

9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)

10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.

11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)

Distribution

EHRLICHIOSIS IN DOGS

Distribution of the Brown tick in Australia

This disease can be found worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas. Once the disease is in the brown dog tick population, it is very difficult to control. German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies are predisposed to develop more severe signs of disease with a worse prognosis (reduced cell-mediated immune response).

In extremely rare cases, infected ticks may infect people, however the species of Ehrlichia that affects humans have not yet been detected in Australia.

Ehrlichiosis is currently a notifiable disease. While this disease was first reported in the far north of Western Australia in the middle of 2020. Since that time, cases have also been found throughout the Northern Territory where it is now considered endemic, right down to the South Australian border. A case has been found recently in Mount Isa where the infected dog has no history of ever leaving the state.

At the rate this is moving, no state will be safe and all people who travel with their dogs should be aware of the risks and the need to provide preventative measures to protect their dogs.

Currently as of early 2023, the disease has been reported in the Mount Isa area and as far east as Townsville.

All people travelling with dogs into north Queensland, the Northern Territory, the far north of Western Australia and northern South Australia should be taking precautions against ticks.

All dogs should have Serresto tick collars on prior to entering these areas and to stay on tick preventatives for several weeks following. If you are using other oral products for flea, heart worm and tick control, these can continue to be used. The aim is to prevent the tick from biting the dog and these collars repel the ticks.

Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne disease affecting primarily dogs but equally affects dingoes and foxes. It is not transmitted from dog to dog, transmission only occurs through infected ticks, the main one being the brown dog tick.

The brown dog tick is widespread throughout mainland Australia. No brown ticks have been found in Tasmania. While some ticks are mostly coastal, the brown dog tick is found extensively throughout the Australian continent.

Ehrlichiosis is the disease that is caused by a tick-borne bacteria called Ehrlichia Canis. Once a dog has been bitten by an infected tick, there are 3 stages of infection: -

1. Acute or early phase (3-4 weeks)

2. A subclinical phase (months to years)

3. Chronic or long-term stage. (months to years)

Symptoms include fever, lethargy, enlarged lymph nodes, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, weight loss, anaemia, and bleeding disorders such as nosebleeds or bleeding under the skin that looks like small spots, patches or bruising.

The severity of symptoms varies considerably between dogs. The incubation period is 1-3 weeks after the tick bite, but the chronic form may not manifest for months or years following infection. PCR and ELISA tests give the most accurate diagnosis along with comprehensive blood tests. Affected dogs require veterinary treatment and supportive care, the earlier this is diagnosed and treated the better. Usually, these dogs are treated with tetracycline drugs for a minimum of 4 weeks, shorter treatment periods may

Dogs from affected areas are being monitored and their movement limited (at this stage). Dogs (including rescue dogs) moving out from these areas are required to test negative. Healthy dogs should be on an effective tick control program.

Prevention

The aim is to prevent tick bites in the first place so as to avoid the dog getting the disease. The best prevention is to use Tick collars of which Serresto is the best as it repels ticks.

Secondly, have a good tick and flea control program in place so that if a tick does get on the dog, it will be killed. There are quite a few products that can be used but ensure the dog is not left unprotected by running late with treatments.

Avoid taking dogs into tick infected areas such as bush and long grass, particularly in coastal areas. Inspect your dogs daily for ticks for 5-6 days after being in tick infected areas.

Check bedding and treat with anti-parasite sprays if in a tick area.

Travelling

The most likely way this disease will spread is by the transport of dogs interstate. Dog exhibitors like to travel far and wide for shows, often interstate. We should all be vigilant with providing tick control measures and renewing these before we travel!

Do not take dogs running along beaches, through the bush etc without adequate tick prevention. Be aware at some shows, the grounds may back onto bush, do not walk your dogs through these areas.

Long Term

At the rate this disease Is spreading, it is highly likely that this disease will be widespread throughout Australia within the next 5-10 years. With global warming, the brown ticks will become more common even in the southern states. Keep an eye on warnings put out by the Government of where new cases are detected so you can be aware of this real threat to your dogs health.

Tick prevention should become second nature, especially when travelling into areas of high risk.
