President’s Report

The June meeting of the Board of Directors for Dogs Australia was conducted via Zoom and the summary of decisions from that meeting have been loaded to the Dogs SA Web site and placed as a feature in this month’s Journal. Major decisions included the use of ramps and tables with directions for when they are to be used and for what breeds. There is also a list of breeds where ramps and/or tables are to be used. This list will be a living document at the start to ensure the correct breeds are judged in the most suitable manner for both the dog and the judge. These regulations will come into effect 01 Jan 2024, to give affiliates sufficient time to source the ramps. Another addition is the recognition of the Australian Sled Sports Association (ASSA) into the listing of recognised Working Dog Associations or Kindred Bodies.

June/July also saw the running of 2 major Dogs SA events those being, The Advance Winter International Championship Shows and the State Agility Championships. Both were great successes and I congratulate the organizers of the events for their efforts and all the wonderful exhibitors who entered the events.

The Royal Adelaide Show entries have closed for 2023 and the Dog committee is extremely happy with the entry numbers. At the time of normal closing the total entries were Conformation 2024, Obedience & Agility 241 and Dances with Dogs 24. Car parking has been a hot topic on Face Book however, parking has gone back to the pre COVID days with Car Park 3 now fully operational and reserved for dog exhibitors.

Decisions from the June meeting of Dogs SA Council included:

• Dogs SA to coordinate a committee to attend the 2024 Pet Expo as it was considered the 2023 event was a great success.

• Dogs SA Representative training to be conducted online and to be generic for disciplines. This would make it easier for the smaller disciplines to find Representatives.

• Dogs SA would be a Gold Sponsor for the Dogs Day Out event in Mawson Lakes held on 24 Sept 2023.

In closing I want to remind members that dog registrations are now due and payable by the 31 August. In keeping with the aims of our association in promoting responsible dog ownership, payment of registration fees is essential to demonstrate we are responsible dog owners ourselves.

The Committee found you guilty of a breach of Rule 13(b) of Part XIV Offences and the following penalty is imposed:-

1. Suspension of Membership of the South Australian Canine Association for a period of twenty-four months (24) months wholly set aside but to become effective immediately should he re-offend with a breach of these rules.

2. All further litters from Andonas (of any breed) must supply DNA parentage analysis results on the Sire, Dam and all live puppies.

3. Fine of $1,000.00

4. Costs of $136.00

WINTERBOURNE JACK RUSSELLS

Celebrates 38 years of successful Showing, Breeding and exporting overseas.

I am so proud of the achievements and accolades awarded during this time gaining two Supreme Championship Titles with sire and son progeny. Numerous homebred Group level awards. Thank you to all the judges who have awarded and appreciated the quality of my Jacks and thank you to my fellow exhibitors and friends who have supported me along the way.

Rest in Peace

David was an International Judge, Examiner, Assessor, Breeder, Mentor for many with a longstanding career which spanned over 50 years. Breeding Rough Coat Collies with his lifelong partner Lance, they bred many Champions and Grand Champions with a history to be proud of. His heart was always with the Working Dog ring and he could be found there with his beloved Collies most weekends.

David was a Life Member of the Collie Club of SA Inc, Adelaide Kennel Club Inc, Canine Fanciers Kennel Club Inc and in later years was on the committee for the prestigious Winter International Shows which have been voted the most popular in the country on multiple occasions.

David’s funeral was held on Wednesday 19th July at Mount Barker with the service being packed to the brim with his abundance of friends and family in attendance.

Sincerest condolences to David’s partner of 54 years, Lance. He will be missed by many.

SUMMARY OF THE DOGS AUSTRALIA SPECIAL BOARD MEETING HELD VIA ZOOM VIDEO CONFERENCING ON 17 JUNE 2023

At the June 2023 ANKC Ltd Special Board meeting, Directors resolved/ considered the following:

1. * ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show, New Clause 2.7

It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show be amended with the addition of Clause 2.7 to read as follows:

2.7 Use of Ramps/Tables

2.7.1 A current list of table, ramp and ground judged breeds may be found on the Dogs Australia website.

2.7.2 Table Breeds

Designated table breeds must be examined on an examination table. When re-examining them, they must be placed back on the table. Only breeds designated as table breeds may be examined on the table.

2.7.3 Ramp Breeds

A judge requesting the use of a ramp must give notice to the show representative/show manager prior to judging. Dogs Australia/ member body approval is not required. Designated ramp breeds may be examined on the ground (table if applicable) or on a ramp during breed judging at the sole discretion of the judge and not the exhibitor. The entire entry in that breed is to be examined on the ground (table if applicable) or on a ramp. The ramp will be available at the discretion of the judge for all ramp optional breeds through all levels of competition including group and Best in Show judging.

2.7.4 Breeds designated as Table/Ramp optional breeds may be judged on either at the sole discretion of the judge and not the exhibitor. The entire entry in a breed is to be examined in the same manner.

2.7.5 All Other Breeds

Breeds not designated as either table or ramp breeds may only be examined on the ground.

2.7.6 Baby Puppies of any breed

Baby puppies may be examined on the ground, table or ramp at the discretion of the Exhibitor and Judge.

2.7.7 Guidelines for Construction of a Judging Ramp

NOTE: Please refer to Regulations Part 2 – Judges, Clause 1.4 in relation to the declaration contained on all Judges Application Forms, both new and renewal regarding fitness to judge.

Note: This amendment to the regulations will be effective 1 January 2024.

2. * ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration, Clause

1.7

It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration Clause 1.7 be amended to read as follows:

1.7 Greyhounds

All Member Bodies shall recognise registrations issued by the relevant Authority within that State/Territory. Owners must complete a re-registration application signed by the relevant Authority and accompanied by a copy of the Greyhound Identification Card or Pedigree. (04/84) (Amended 5/00) (Amended 10/16, 6.1) (Amended 06/23, 5.2 –effective 01/08/23)

Note: This amendment to the regulations will be effective 1 August 2023.

It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration Clause 3.2 (c) be amended to read:

3.2 All pedigree dogs that are imported into Australia except those imported from New Zealand (including dogs whelped in Australia and previously exported from Australia) to be re-registered with Dogs Australia must provide, at the time of registering the dog the following:

c. An original Export Pedigree and Ownership Certificate (if two separate documents) or a digital Export Pedigree/Ownership Certificate sent directly to the State Member Body Office from the Overseas Controlling Body, indicating the Australian member’s name and current residential address showing all registration numbers, titles granted and colours by the overseas body. The Export pedigree must be at least first and second generations complete and the 3rd generation a maximum of 4 names missing.

Note: This amendment to the regulations will be effective 1 August 2023.

4. * ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration, Clause 6.3.4.12.1

Ramps acquired from date of implementation should conform to the following specifications.

Construction: Any stable material, including the use of folding legs if required.

Surface: non-slip such as; rubber-mat, artificial turf, outdoor carpet.

Weight: the weight any ramp shall not exceed 16kg (in accordance with WHS guidelines) except in the case where the ramp is mobile by form of attached wheels (can be pushed rather than carried or lifted).

Dimensions: Length: 120 cm, Width: 60 cm, Height: 40 – 60 cm

Slope: no greater than 30°

It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration Clause 6.3.4.12.1 be amended to read as follows:

6.3.4.12.1 The State Member Body that initially first registers any dog with a shortened tail shall determine whether such shortening is legal. Any change to this status shall be the responsibility of the State Member Body that first made the notation on the registration. All State Member Bodies shall recognise any determination by another State Member Body in relation to this matter.

Note: This amendment to the regulations will be effective 1 August 2023.

* ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration, Clause 3.2 (c)

5. * ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration, New Clause 8.16A

It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration be amended with new Clause 8.16A to read as follows:

8.16A Dobermann

8.16A. Effective 1st January 2024, any Dobermann born a Natural Bobtail will be eligible to be registered on the Limited Register only and flagged NOT TO BE UPGRADED as they do not conform with the breed standard.

Note: This amendment to the regulations will be effective 1 January 2024.

6. * ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration, Clause 6.11.4

It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration, Clause 6.11.4 which currently reads as follows to be removed in its entirety effective 1 January 2024:

6.11.4 In addition to compliance with 6.11.1 any Dobermann applying to be registered as a Natural Bobtail (NBT) must also show DNA proof of purity of breed. Where the certification of the dog being a NBT is by DNA testing, the DNA testing for proof of purity of breed must be conducted by an independent testing laboratory to that of the NBT testing. Effective for matings after the 1 June 2022. (Added 10/21, 9.4) (Amended 05/22, EM#199)

7.

Clause 8.16 be amended with new Section 13 pertaining to the Conduct of Surveys to read as follows:

13.1 The Board of Directors may at their sole discretion, resolve to conduct a survey of members to gauge their opinion on any matter not covered by Regulations Part 6 Clause 8.18 to assist it in making a decision.

13.2 If the survey is breed related, it will be limited to:

a) voting current members of a Dogs Australia Member Body;

b) who have held full continuous membership for the previous two years prior to the release of the survey; and

c) currently own or have owned a Main Registered dog in the specific breed.

13.3 Surveys will be electronic, conducted by the Dogs Australia Administration.

Note: This amendment to the regulations will be effective 1 August 2023.

8. * Dogs Australia Listing of Recognised Working Dog Associations or Kindred Bodies

It was RESOLVED that the Australian Sled Dog Sports Association be added to the Dogs Australia Listing of Recognised Working Dog Associations or Kindred Bodies.

It is with much sadness that I would like to pass on the sad news of Bill Godfrey’s very sudden passing on Thursday 6 July.

Bill was a well-known Judge and Steward for many decades and the breeder along with his late wife Janet, of Spaceline Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Whippets.

The Adelaide Hills Kennel Club and the Whippet Club played a major part in his life as one of the founding members and President of both Clubs until the past couple of years.

His loved daughter Stephanie and grandson Jackson gave him much pleasure on their visits and he would speak so proudly to me about Jackson’s hard work and how well he was doing.

I am sure everyone will join me in thinking of Stephanie and Jackson at this very sad time.

A big loss to the dog world.

A private family funeral will be held at a later date.

Retrieving news

Not long now until the culmination of SA’s retrieving season with the Dogs SA State Retrieving Championship to be held at Loveday on 26th and 27th August. Entries close on the 10th with the draw being done at Dogs SA at 10 am on the 11th August. The judge from Victoria is Mrs Diane McCann. Spectators welcome, please leave your dogs at home or in the car.

We are desperately looking for helpers for this event. Triallers are happy to go distances in all weather conditions to trial during the year but in the past, and it appears to be going to be the same this year, do not offer their help and support at the top event - very disappointing! If you are able to assist for one day please contact the Trial Manager, Jeff Patrick, on 0428 894 240, or else email me and I’ll pass your email onto him.

The GSP Club ran a very successful trial on the first day of the King’s birthday June long week-end and RAFTCOSA completed it with 2 more days of trialling. RAFTCOSA also ran trials on 24th and 25th June and the following week-end 2 days of trialling at Meningie. Results elsewhere from these trials.

A huge break between Meningie and our next trials on 19th and 20th August, then the State. Apart from the RAFT’s Novice Cup non qualifying trial Teams Event, that will be it for retrieving season in SA (no date set as yet).

CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS

Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)

As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:

1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.

2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)

3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.

4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.

5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)

(a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20)

(b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20)

(c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (11/21)

(d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20)

(e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20)

(f) A current veterinary certificate is defined as a certificate dated within three months prior to the mating. (11/21)

6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.

7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)

8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.

9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)

10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.

11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)

12. I shall ensure that every dog in every litter I breed will be registered as required in the SACA Rules. (07/22)

Setting up for Shows at David Roche Park

Members are permitted to set up tents and gazebos only to reserve an area on the day prior to exhibiting at a show held at David Roche Park. It is not permitted for space to be reserved using pegs or rope. No impervious groundsheets are permitted to be laid.

All property is left at the member’s risk. Gates are open by 8.30am by the office staff, or the club may facilitate an earlier time. The gates are closed at 4.30pm. Please ensure all people and vehicles have vacated the grounds by this time. If a show is held on the Sunday, and the grounds are closed on the Saturday, setting up on the Friday is permitted at the member’s risk.

Procedure for reserving of sites for Commercial marquees

When it is intended to book and erect a commercial marquee an application must be lodged with the Dogs SA office no less than 10 working days prior to the event. The booking must be made on the application form (available on the Dogs SA website or office) and the non-refundable prescribed fee of $50.00 must be paid at this time. The booking will not be accepted without a complete form and payment.

Commercial marquees are erected 2 days prior to avoid conflict with members setting up their own gazebo. If a commercial marquee is not erected 2 days prior, the reservation is forfeited, and other members may set up within that site.

Only commercial marquees are to be erected on booked sites. No personal gazebos.

The Definitive German Shepherd

While this book has been the subject of MANY glowing reviews since it’s release, I have always felt that they missed one of the most unique aspects of the book. Now, please don’t think that I disagree with what has been said so far, because they have all been excellent.

Dozens of articles will show you the incredibly detailed sections on anatomy, movement, dentition, muscular and skeletal structure as well as temperament. Regardless of your breed, these sections hold a depth of knowledge that simply blows the mind and challenges you to re-evaluate what you thought you knew.

For the German Shepherd lovers, the chapters on history and development are comprehensive and actually very interesting, even for me as a non-GSD person. The history behind the formation of the breed and the people involved make for a great read on their own.

This is where I feel many people have missed something truly unique, the slow but relentless morphing of the breed from its initial structure through to some extremes, and then the SV made a conscious decision to pull back towards moderation.

Every breed has had some movement in style over the years with

some more obvious than others. The GSD, however, has done this on a grand scale. This is partly due to the large number of the breed and partly due to the general familiarity of the breed with almost everyone.

I have spent many years talking about how breeds slowly push “normal” and the extremes go with them. This migration of the normal range is typical of so many aspects of life from Politics to dog style to general beliefs and behaviour.

Reading through the journey of this breed from decade to decade with a continuous string of top winners, photos showing the slow transition over time in pictorial form. Personally, I find it fascinating to look at and so very relatable. This is the first book that I have ever seen that so clearly lays it out to follow.

At 1100 pages you will be sure to find whatever it is you are looking for. After all, there is a very good reason so many people have called this a Bible. Louis is working on a second release of the book.
