President’s Report
Welcome all. January has been a hot month with a number of events postponed or cancelled due to the heat. Well done to those affiliates who have worked through this and ran some very good events. If you are planning or running an event and are not positive of what you can do or what your responsibilities are please, contact the office who are more than willing to assist you to achieve a positive outcome. Avoid asking the question on Face Book as the answers you may receive are the popular responses but may not be the correct responses. Council will be reviewing the Hot Weather policy and in particular the use of the Elders weather site. Elders was originally chosen due to its search function of location which was not (then) available on the Bureau of Meteorology site.
The office has been extremely busy over the January period with membership renewals, litter registrations and titles. This along with staff shortages and training has produced longer than normal processing times for litter registrations. Dogs SA does allow for babies to be entered in events with the registration number pending. The registration number must however be produced prior to the event. The other issue is the late payment of membership fees. If you are not financial at the time of entering your entry should be rejected. When we go over to an automated entry system where the service providers are connected to the Dogs Aust database they will automatically reject entries if you are not financial. So in future please ensure your memberships are paid up prior to 31 December of each year with time allowed for processing.
Recent reports have identified that there has been a number of items removed from exhibitor’s tents whilst they have been out exhibiting their dogs. This is a significant slant on our membership as many of the belongings are only of advantage to our own members. This is a timely reminder however as we move into a new year for everyone to be vigilant and not leave personal belongings in plain view and easy for someone to simply pick up as they walk past. We also have a number of visitors to the grounds when shows are on and some may be looking for opportune moments to pick up purses and other attractive items.
In closing I would like to remind everyone that the 71st AGM of the Association will be held on Wednesday 22 March 2023 commencing at 7pm. This is a little later than is been previously held and is to ensure the Auditors have the time to complete the Audited accounts and the members have time to review prior to the AGM. Looking forward to seeing as many there as possible.

COUNCIL ADMINISTRATION REPORT 2020
ANNUAL REPORT 2022
2022 has been another amazing year for Dogs SA. We have been gradually and methodically reviewing and updating our systems and processes and ensuring that we have everything we need to continue to be an efficient and effective organisation supporting our membership and achieving our objectives into the future.
2020 was an extraordinary year with the Coronavirus impacting all Dogs SA operations, shows, events and trials. Given the volatile conditions, many activities planned were unable to be conducted or were cancelled at short notice because of changing SA Health advice. This virus was felt worldwide and impacted entries and judges from not only around Australia but the World.
Albeit a difficult year, membership numbers declined only slightly in comparison to 2019. In 2020, SA Membership Statistics were recorded by the ANKC as 2,731 compared to 2,866 on the previous year. Noting that all states except WA and NSW experience d some level of decline.
Our new Executive Officer, Deb Lee, joined us in February and since then we have commenced the review of our Strategic Plan, developed a Governance Charter (which you can find on our website), Delegations of Authority and developed a range of policies and procedures. We have reviewed our Advisory Committee Terms of Reference and provided a standard Constitution template for our Affiliates. A review and update of our Investigations Committee and Disciplinary Panel procedures is well under way. We have commissioned an organisation called Governology to update our Constitution and a Sub Committee from Council has been working closely with them. The final draft will be circulated to members soon.
Due to Covid-19 a total of 218 exhibitions were cancelled including 74 All Breed Championship Shows, 31 Specialty Championship Shows, 6 Open Shows, 1 Parade and 106 Trials. Despite the disruption a total of 139 exhibitions were held consisting of 78 All Breed Championship Shows, 1 Parade, 6 Specialty Championship Shows and 54 Trials.
A repair and maintenance review was undertaken by Peter Thompson, Peter Dynan and Deb and works were duly scheduled. The grounds pump was updated with a backflow valve, catches were fitted to the Stewards boxes, assistance rails were fitted within the Ladies Toilets, the hall carpet and floor was thoroughly cleaned, Library established in the Bar and a disabled ramp was installed to access the Marsula Brine room. We purchased a deep fryer and under bench refrigerator for our weekend food sales and had a Video/audio system fitted to the Bar which enables us to hold Zoom and other meetings that are well supported by sound and video. The old office area was completely refurbished and is almost ready to be used as one large meeting space or two smaller ones. All the door locks and padlocks were changed, and all keys updated, with key register now in place.
Although events were impacted the Council took this opportunity to undertake some updates at David Roche Park including full irrigation upgrade with electrical, gate and timer; floodlights; training room fit out (screen, tv, projector, speakers); Wi-Fi to Marsula Brine Room; Solar Panels; pavers and finally bollards outside the equipment shed. Further maintenance has been identified following a site inspection, undertaken at the end of the year by members of Council and the new EO to identify potential work to be done moving forward.
Judges training for Conformation has held their annual theory and practical examinations and we are pleased to note the pass rate 14 out of 18 candidates in Theory and 16 out of 18 candidates for Practical. Congratulations to all our new Judges! Six members have been accepted onto the Judges Training Program and we wish them good luck and an amazing learning journey.
The Judge’s training for Conformation was impacted, with a shift in learning focus , to online self-guided and no, hands-on exams being conducted in 2020. Although the delivery was somewhat different, Council would still like to acknowledge the work undertaken by the Conformation Judge’s Training Panel and all those involved who provided their valuable time, experience, and knowledge. Theory Examinations were conducted in December with a pass rate of 16 out of 22 candidates.
The Executive Officer and the Investigations Committee processed 53 complaints and/or breaches of the Rules through Disciplinary Panels in 2022 with improvements made to timely processing, scheduling and information going back to members. A considerable number of other issues were dealt with by the Executive Officer aiding members on a range of issues that were not suitable for Disciplinary Panels but still required some facilitation or mediation input and outcomes.
The dog community enjoyed lots and lots of shows and trials in 2022, both at David Roche Park and other venues around our state. The Winter International was an outstanding success – despite the wet and chilly weather with all marquee spots booked out for 2023 within the first week after the show! Dog of The Year/
The Investigations Committee worked through numerous complaints and/or breaches of the Rules in 2020 despite the reduction in Shows. A total of 22 cases were reviewed, with many going to Disciplinary Hearings. Council fully appreciates the volunteer commitment made by the Investigations Committee and Disciplinary Panel Members, as it is a difficult, yet extremely valuable role of the Association. Let us hope in 2021 we see a reduction in investigations being heard and complaints being received.

Puppy of The Year/Neuter of The Year was another show case event for Dogs SA with a spectacular array of prizes for the winners. The State Agility Championships were also held in South Australia and the support and participation was outstanding. We must all remember how much work, effort, passion, and time goes into the planning, set up and running of these events – all done by volunteers. A very warm thank you to everyone who plays a part in helping and bringing these shows and trials to us for us all to enjoy.
Work continues on our new Dogs SA website – although the progress has most definitely been slower than we would have liked. We are very hopeful that our new website will be launched in the early part of 2023. Our EO sent out her first newsletter just prior to Christmas and given the positive response this will be sent out every 2 months throughout 2023. We have also commenced work on a series of member surveys which will be launched in 2023 – an opportunity for you to tell us what you would like to see in a range of areas. We have had several staff changes in the office during 2022 when we said farewell to Ann Farndell and see ya later to Georgia Reece and a big warm hello to both Nova Mahajabin and Mick Carter. We continue to provide effective, efficient, and pleasant service to all of our members. We continue to work our way through replacing as many of the paper records into electronic format as we possibly can, introducing scanning and electronic processing of memberships, litters, prefixes etc.
In August we reviewed our Scale of Fees and Charges and made a very moderate increase to fees of 4% (well under the CPI). Additionally, we offered members the option to decrease their membership fee by opting to not receive a printed Journal. There was no increase on stationery charges and decreases were made to Country Affiliate Club levies. We also added a Cluster License for Clubs where you pay for the first 2 shows/ trials and receive subsequent shows at half price (in the same weekend).
We would very much like to applaud the efforts of many of our volunteers and workers including the SACA Reps, Judges, Stewards, Canteen Manager and all the Canteen volunteers who all work tirelessly for the Association.
This year our Canteen and Bar sales achieved $20,340 profit and a further $19,680 was paid to affiliate clubs for their commission earned whilst running the canteen, BBQ and fryer.
2022 was indeed a good year with Dogs SA achieving approximately $213,450 in profit, funding that will be put to good use, improving facilities and resources for Dogs SA members.
And so, to 2023
We look forward to continuing the pace and ensuring that we bring many more projects and improvements to finalisation.
• Finalisation and adoption of the Dogs SA new Constitution
• Comprehensive member survey and feedback
• Upgrade of the BBQ area
• Review, upgrade, and facilitation of our Dogs SA training (Stewards and SACA Reps)
• Development of New Member Mentoring programs
We have so much to offer all dog owners and we look forward to hearing your ideas about how we can continue to expand our membership and involve our broader community in what we do. Dog shows, trials and dog ownership are fun and great ways to have fun, keep fit and meet new people – we hope 2023 is a year full of achievement, friendship, and fun for everyone in our dog community.

OBEDIENCE ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2022
2022 has been a year of activity with trials back in full swing and keen competitors. There have been new faces in the earlier classes and I look forward to their ongoing participation and involvement in the sports of Obedience and Rally.
The OAC this year has worked well with full membership. I thank very sincerely all of the members: Julie Brown; Peter Dynan; Brian Fielder and Sue Laidler. Julie’s support in managing our social sites (Facebook and Web) is a major role. Brian and Peter have ben tireless in their support for our dog sports at Council. Sue has been a welcome contributor being able to bring an active voice for club administrators. Brian and Lyn Fielden’s work on delivering another successful State Championship, major event of the year. Peter has been actively updating the Steward’s guide with Wendy Adams support. Lyn continues to do the unenviable task of Registrar with her usual enthusiasm. Thanks also to the SAODC for their support of the State Championships.
This year we have been active in the following areas: ET rules review; Concessions on Dogs SA charges for country clubs; Competitor’s guide; Updating the Steward’s Guide (still in progress); Judges training; Supporting a new obedience group recently established in Port Lincoln and updated Not For Competition rules to be available for 2023.
The judges training program this year with significant support from Ros Kumela has seen additions to the panel – congratulations David Opperman (Open) and Ruth Vizzer (Novice/ CCD). We expect a further Open judge to join the panel in early 2023. I urge others to consider taking up judging. Any effort by clubs or competitors is of little value if the list of judges continues to be limited.
I thank all of our Club’s and their committees and volunteers, particularly those that offer obedience and rally trials, those that keep our sport active through their competing, our judges who ensure that competition is maintained and the staff of Dogs SA for their support and assistance, with special thanks to the years of service from Ann Farndell.
I take this opportunity to give very special thanks to Brian Fielder for his many years of service to the OAC and wish him well in his ongoing role as a Councillor. Brian’s contribution to our sports has been outstanding – Thank You.
Neil MacDonald Chair
AGILITY ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2022
I’m sure that everyone in the agility community will agree that it’s been terrific to get back into training and trials as Covid has taken a back seat.
2022 has seen the eight SA Clubs that provide for agility, able to conduct all their scheduled trials. On behalf of the AAC and the agility community, I extend sincere thanks to all those involved in making this happen. Without you, we couldn’t enjoy the sport we love.
While numbers in some classes have been a little lower this year, it has been heartening to see a significant increase in Novice entries. This auger well for the future, and there are certainly some exciting teams coming through that inspire us all. The packed
stands at the Royal Show agility competitions and the increased number of requests for agility demonstrations at local shows are further indicators that agility is of growing interest in the wider community.
Elite trial classes, when on offer, are also being supported by a small number of seasoned Masters level handlers. Not for competition (NFC) options are being utilised, and the increasing use of ring mesh has supported more entries. And everyone loves watching the Veteran dogs, enjoy a jumping round when it is available.
The State Championships were held over three days in June, hosted by the Southern Districts Kennel and Obedience Dog Club. The 2022 event saw us trying a different format to determine State Champions. This generated useful experience for future planning. The event was once again well-supported by competitors, including both local and interstate teams. There was a total of 110 dogs, completing 967 runs. The highly regarded judges, from NSW, Vic, and SA, provided us with great courses, and camaraderie that added to the enjoyable ambience.
Many people contributed to making this a successful event, but I wish to give special thanks to Roz Short for her phenomenal effort in chasing up sponsors and organising all the trophies and prizes.
Agility is continuing to evolve quickly as a sport. This includes course designs and handling techniques, as well as safety of both dogs and handlers. The AAC has noted that keeping abreast of new developments presents challenges for clubs, many of whom are already stretched to the limit regarding available capacity. As such, the role that notable interstate and international trainers coming to SA to run seminars, has been making an important contribution. These include classes at every level from puppy foundation and pre-trialling skills through to elite levels. The seminars support club training for handlers and their dogs and also offer ‘auditing’ spots for those who want to observe, discuss, and learn.
Some in our community love the challenges of the more open and faster courses, whilst others prefer courses that suit less mobile or highly ambitious teams. Throughout 2022, clubs and judges have worked hard in trying to achieve a balance that meets the interests and capabilities of all competitors.
During 2022 there have been fewer judges available for SA trials and their efforts in coming to grips with the ‘new’ rules in addition to changing course and handling trends, and increasingly fast dogs, is commendable. To support our judges in managing their task, the AAC has offered an ongoing 50% subsidy on the cost of online courses for judges.
As I prepare this report, confirmation has just been received that Trainee Judge, Judy Magarey, has passed her practical exam and is now set to judge in 2023 – Congratulations.
We need more judges, so if you have a feeling that you’d like to give it a go, please do consider it. Members of the AAC would be delighted to talk through the process with you.
As we move toward 2023, the twice-deferred National Agility Championships finally look set to run, in May, in Perth. The AAC will be using the criteria and protocol approved this year for selecting the SA Senior Team. This protocol was developed to provide greater clarity in team selection, and was published in the May 2022, Dogs SA magazine. Dogs SA Council has recently given their approval to the selection protocol for SA Junior Team.
Page 8
The annual awards will see us acknowledge some very worthy recipients. Congratulations to you all, and especially to Mika Peace and her dog Flatout Breakout, in gaining their Agility Champion title. This year the AAC is also recognising the achievements of dogs that have gained titles during 2022 through the awarding of sashes at this Special General Meeting. For some teams, it may take years to gain a title, and in doing so, they may have overcome significant challenges; we wish to celebrate their efforts.
In addition to the more obvious tasks, such as measuring dogs, providing timers to trials, and developing protocols to streamline processes, the AAC has continued to advocate and liaise with Dogs SA Council, regarding the development of agility in SA. Thank you to our new EO, Deb Lee, for her support in this regard.
On behalf of the AAC and competitors, I extend a big thank you to the Dogs SA office staff. Their work and assistance, support all we do, and it is greatly appreciated.
In conclusion, I wish to say it’s been a privilege to serve as Chairperson of the Agility Committee for 2022. I would like to thank each of the AAC members, Paul Schroeder, Vanessa Loughlin, Roz Short, Chloe Dunlop, Jason Schultz, and Jenny Barnes, for their support and hard work throughout the year.
I wish the incoming Advisory Committee all the best in taking agility forward in the coming year.
Nadege Wauchope AAC Chairperson
DANCES WITH DOGS & TRICKS ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2022
This reporting period saw the upsurge of interest and participation in Tricks Tests levelling off and with little change to the numbers involved in DWD. This year has been dominated by the Rules Review for both DWD and Tricks. As this was the first opportunity to review the newly introduced sport of Tricks it attracted a lot of interest and in-put.
DWD COMPETITIONS
DWD Competitions totalled 8, conducted by two Clubs – The DWD Club of SA and Gawler Dog Training Club and the Royal Show. Entries for DWD Competitions have been down a little, averaging around 20.
TRICKS TESTS
Twenty-two Tests were conducted by four clubs: The DWD Club of SA, Gawler Dog Training Club, Riverland Dog Club, Southern Districts Dog Club and SA Dog Obedience Club. Entries for Tricks Tests are around 40. It has been noted that the number of entries has levelled out at this number.
HANDLER TRAINING
The DWD Club of SA is the only affiliated Club providing weekly training in both divisions of DWD, which are held on the grounds of David Roche Park. It also organised a Workshop with a professional dog trainer to assist people to understand training techniques in a range of sports, including Tricks and DWD. Regular Tricks Training is conducted by DWD Club, Gawler Dog Training School, Para Districts, SAODC and Southern Districts Clubs. This has ensured continued interest and participation in Tricks Tests.
JUDGES
Training DWD Judges: One Session was held earlier this year,
via Zoom, attracting very good participation. The second will be held as part of the final Rules Review next month.
Maryka Spurling-Janes has been analysing the data from every DWD competition, both DWDCSA and Gawler DTC since Jan 2019. This data has been used to inform the Judges Training Programme. During 2022 Topics such as: Clarification of rules 11.4.2 and 11.5.1(j) that relate to barking - How do we decide on deductions of 1-4 points or a DQ? And, Given that 23% of entrants receive an NQ, what are the factors that you consider when you attribute a Non Qualifying score?: And “What would it take to gain a perfect score?”
Earlier this year Daniel McLoughlin produced a very detailed analysis of statistics of DWDCSA competitions from 2012 to the present. It is interesting to note that there were similar patterns in his analysis and Maryka’s, that studied a shorter period and included the Gawler Competitions as well.
There is now 13 Judges on the DWD Panel and next year will see a Trainee Judge entering the sport. With an average of 8 DWD Competitions held in this State, a problem could emerge, regarding judges getting sufficient ‘real life’ practical experience. Training for TRICKS Judges: The five Tricks Test Judges have collectively used the Rules Review by working together as a basis for growing their skills and knowledge including practical sessions. This has been an enormous task with descriptions of 75 Tricks under review and Lynne Stapylton is to be congratulated on her efforts to drive and develop this sport in SA.
PROMOTION
DWD and Tricks Demonstrations at schools and nursing homes have picked up despite some being affected by Covid. The demonstrations, organised by the DWD Club of SA, continue to play an important part in helping promote these sports to the general public and act as a platform for DogSA to the wider community.
THE FUTURE
The popularity in Tricks is pleasing, however, so far only one person has transitioned from Tricks to DWD: which was the original intention.
Next year will see us celebrating 10 years of DWD in SA. This special event (which was delayed due to Covid), will be conducted in conjunction with the DWD and Tricks 2023 State Championships.
The DWD AC has successfully met the challenges of 2022 albeit a very small committee of 4. Tegan has continued her service to and support for the AC, and her titanic work scribing and recording the Rules Review is to be lauded. Carolyn Gregoric expertly took up the role of secretarial/Minute-taking with absolute style and aplomb. Shauna Ashewood, another newcomer has stepped in and is relishing her steep learning curve. We are most grateful that Sharon Wood is returning to the AC to undertake the role of Competition Secretary for the two DWD State Championship Competitions at the April 2023: and it must be said that it is doubtful we could have managed without Lynne Stapylton’s expert and energetic input in taking on the Manager and Secretary Roles of the three State Tricks Championship next year.
We look forward to an exciting 2023, which we hope includes progress on the expansion and development of the SACA Hall, thus enabling Dogs SA members to participate in DWD Competitions at David Roche Park, their home ground.

Track and Search Discipline
Examinations for written and practical were conducted in the Track and Search discipline and we congratulate the three successful candidates Joanne Murrell, Leanne Dunn and Narelle Medlicott. We have a further two candidates in this discipline, that we hope will complete the examinations in 2023.
For the 2022 season, the following dogs achieved the title of Tracks and Search Grand Champion, T Ch TS Grand Ch Labsnlife Freyja CCD RA “Lexie”, a Labrador Retriever Owned and handled by Julianne Henry, Tri Neut Ch (T)(TS) TS Grand Ch Cheyandor Carly RA TK.S QND NRA HTM.N FS.N “Carly” a Labrador Retriever and Dual Neut Ch (TS) TS Grand Ch Cheyandor Gem RA TK.S TDX QND NRD ORA FS.I HTM.N “Opal” , a Labrador Retriever both owned and handled by Christine Hayes, Tri Ch (T)(TS) TS Grand Ch Blakesims Kanyemba Brooklyn (AI) RN HSAs “Brooklyn” a Rottweiler owned and handled by Narelle Medlicott, and Tri Ch (T)(TS) TS Grand Ch Beachspots Renaissance RN “Aura” a Dalmatian owned and handled by Sharon Gahan. There were 4 dogs that achieved a Championship title, two TSDX and three TSD titles. A very successful year with the Tracking Dog Club of SA Inc running two trials, The Rottweiler Club of SA Inc., running one trial and the Tracking Advisory Committee running one Trial. All scheduled trials were run this year.
The regular ANKC Rules review for both disciplines has entered the next phase with the meeting for discussion and recommendations of all the member bodies, slated for the end of March 2023. Once all the State Bodies have ratified the decisions of the Meeting, an updated Rule Book will be produced, and the updated Rules will take effect from January 2024.
I would like to thank the Committee I worked with in 2022, Sheila Smith our Secretary, Ian Murrell, Christine Hayes and Karron Jordan. I particularly would like to thank Sheila and Karron for their service to this Committee as they have chosen not to re-nominate. Under the new guidelines for Advisories, the Committee in 2023 will be reduced to four members in total.
I would also like at this point to thank the EO of Dogs SA Ms Deb Lee and her staff for all the assistance provided to the Advisory in 2022. I would particularly like to thank Ann Farndell
for her helpfulness over the many years she has served the Association. Ann has recently retired, and we will miss her. Enjoy your retirement Ann.

SCENTWORK ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2022
Welcome to the first Special General Meeting of the Dogs SA Scent Work community.
This has been a very busy year for the Advisory Committee as we have worked firstly to bring on our first batch of licenced Judges and then to hold the first Scent Work trials in the State. When I took on the role of Chairperson, my brief was to assist in the establishment and development of Scent Work in South Australia and to guide the new Working Party through its transition to an Advisory Committee.
I think now is the opportune time for me to bow out in the knowledge that we have established Scent Work as a popular and viable discipline in our State and that the remaining members of our foundation Committee provide the core of a very enthusiastic and competent group going forward.
I have been exceptionally lucky to have had the assistance of the group of people I managed to “encourage” to help me along the way. Many thanks to Bron Gascoigne, Sharon Gahan, Kate Lloyd and Narelle Medlicott. Bron has been extremely valuable putting her previous experience as a Secretary and Trial Secretary to very good use while Sharon, Kate and Narelle have also been excellent contributors to the workings of the committee. Unfortunately, Bron has decided that the time is right for her to step away. She has set a very high standard in what she has contributed and will be deeply missed. On behalf of the Committee and our entire Scent Work community I would like to thank Bron and wish her well for the future, which I’m sure will include participating in some more Scent Work trials.
In addition to their roles on the Committee, Sharon, Kate and Narelle formed our first group of trainee judges and in January this year successfully completed their Practical Exams and were granted their licences to judge Scent Work trials. We were fortunate to have assistance from Sonja Needs from Victoria and Silke Weyland from Queensland as Assessors for those exams. Sharon, Kate and Narelle have recently begun training our new group of trainees, so we hope to have some new Judges on the books early in the New Year.
During the year we ran 2 mock trials and 3 sanctioned trials. The mock trials were valuable in giving our new Judges some experience, whilst at the same time giving our competitors and their dogs some experience as well.
Our first “proper” trial was held on 2nd April. We had 83 entries across 3 Novice Elements resulting in 60 qualifications. At our next trial on 25th June we had 136 entries with 99 qualifications across 4 Novice Elements. At our recent trials on 14th and 16th October we had 72 entries with 48 qualifications across 3 Novice Elements and 52 entries with 14 qualifications across 3 Advanced Elements.
For a new discipline I think the entry numbers are very encouraging. As more dogs qualify to enter Advanced and higher-level Elements those numbers should continue to increase.
Page 10
The October trial saw the refurbished old office building used for the first time. Although there is more work to be done, this facility will provide a good venue for trials and training into the future. Although this will in the future be a multi-purpose facility, the Scent Work community are grateful to Dogs SA Council for making the investment.
For our June trial we arranged for Sonja Needs to judge some of the Elements and to conduct a workshop for Club Instructors. We had 18 people in attendance representing 9 affiliated clubs. The feedback we received indicated that the session was very worthwhile and helpful.
In October we had Yvonne Haynes from WA judging the Advanced level Elements. We took the opportunity of her visit to arrange a workshop for both our existing and trainee Judges. Again, this proved to be a very valuable session with some very positive feedback.
It is not the primary role of Advisory Committees to hold trials so it is pleasing to see some clubs now looking to hold trials, with Gawler leading the way with their first trial on 29th October. I look forward to seeing more clubs becoming actively involved next year.
One thing we need to be aware of, however, is avoiding clashes with other disciplines. We need to be sensitive to the dangers of holding events that conflict with others that may force competitors to choose between trials being scheduled on the same day.
In closing, I would again like to thank Bron, Sharon, Kate and Narelle for all their hard work and dedication over the past couple of years. They have proven to be a very effective working group and have certainly kept me on my toes. Thanks also to all the staff, past and present, in the Dogs SA Office. Our jobs are made significantly easier due to the assistance they provide.
Brian Fielder Chair, Scent Work Advisory Committee
RAFT ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2022
There were seven weekends of Retrieving Trials conducted by Dogs SA Affiliated Clubs in South Australia in 2022. Six of those were held by RAFTCOSA and one by the Golden Retriever Club of SA. In addition a one day trial was conducted by the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of SA which celebrated its 50th anniversary by having Queensland judge, Elio Colasimone, a long time owner and trialler of the breed, judge their All Age Stake.
The Gundog Club of SA also conducted a weekend of double Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs with two Tests held on each day.
We thank the organising committees of these Clubs for their dedication to Retrieving for Gundogs in South Australia. A great deal of work is required to organise and run a trial and I am sure it is appreciated by the competitors.
Two Retrieving Trial Judges have had their Judging Licences upgraded during the year. Ben Kradolfer has been upgraded from Restricted to Judge at All Age level and Lynne Webster has been upgraded from Novice to Judge at Restricted level. Congratulations to both Judges.
The South Australian State Championship Retrieving Trial for
Gundogs was due to be held at the Field and Game Property at Loveday. Unfortunately high water levels in the Murray River resulted in flooding at Loveday and a large part of the property became inaccessible. As a result the venue was changed and the Championship was held on 13 & 14 August at Dodds’ property at Meningie. This is a wonderful trialling property which offered our judge, Mr Jim Hargreaves from Victoria, endless possibilities in setting his runs. The weather was kind to us and Jim set 6 testing runs that encompassed just about every possible variation covered in the rule book. The winner of the event was Russell Whitechurch from Victoria with his Labrador Bitch, National Retrieving Trial Ch. Adderslot Maggie May (AI) DM. The top local competitor was 4th placed Rt Ch Nativerun Angus CM, Ray Ashenden’s Labrador Dog.
We appreciated support from McMahon Services, the Golden Retriever Club, the Hungarian Viszla Club and RAFTCOSA who sponsored the event and the Labrador, Golden Retriever, Gundog and GSP Clubs which provided breed awards. Thanks also go to Judy Johnston and Tony Palmer (both from Victoria) who volunteered their services as stewards at the Championship and our local stewards, Gail Phoenix, Susan Burns and Georgie Ray for the time and effort they all put in.
The RAFT Advisory also conducted the Novice teams Cup competition for Novice Gundogs at Peter Seppelts Grand Cru Winery in early September. A fun time was had by all on a fairly wet and sodden property.
The Retrieving Ability Test for Gundogs Rules Review was commenced early in the year with SA submitting one suggestion for change. The Review is on-going.
The RAFT Covid 19 Plan has been reviewed by Jessie Hughes and Lynne Webster in view of the easing of State regulations, and updated for next year.
I thank the RAFT Advisory Committee for their support and assistance during the year and I look forward to a another Retrieving season in 2023. Enjoy your Dogs.
Graeme Allen Chairman SA RAFT Advisory Panel.
EARTHDOG ADVISORY REPORT FOR
2022
INTRODUCTION
The sport of Earthdog for Small Terriers and Dachshunds has two divisions; Earthdog where dogs “go to ground” and “work the quarry” and the less popular Strongdog, where dogs “go to ground” but then must instead “retrieve the quarry”. Following recent rule changes affecting Strongdog, it was decided not to offer these classes until 2023, so proper preparation could be undertaken to ensure a more successful participation in Strongdog.
After 9 years as both a member and Chair of the Advisory Committee, I will not be standing for re-election, however I will still be involved in the sport as a Judge. I would like to all the Committee, Judges and competitors for their support.
TESTS
5 Test Days were held over the period May to August, each having Triple Tests scheduled (i.e. 15 Tests in total for the season, 3 more than 2021). This Dogs SA Advisory Committee ran 3 days and the Terrier Club of SA ran 2 days. Breeds represented were Border, Jack Russel, Tenterfield and West Highland White

webinar was held for the first time, covering tips for training a dog to both “go to ground” and to “work the quarry”, as well as a brief overview of what is involved to gain qualifications in each Class.
JUDGES
No new Judges were licensed in 2022, nor were there any Trainee Judges. The new SACA Rule for 2022 that allowed for a Substitute Judge to judge the Scheduled Judge’s dogs in a Test was well received, especially as with COVID issues no interstate judges were contracted.
RULES
FINANCE
In summary, the surplus for 2022 is approximately $800 bringing the cumulative surplus for the Advisory Committee to approximately $5,300. The Budget was based on a break-even position, the major drivers behind the surplus were:
• +$600: No interstate judge contracted due to risks associated with COVID;

• -$275: Changes to non-live quarry materials to avoid any risk of Animal Welfare Act infringements.
CONCLUSION
TESTS
Tests were run under the new Rules, which included some significant and beneficial changes to Strongdog, due to the previous difficulty in gaining qualifications and low participation rates. The Committee plans to further develop and test weighted pelts, tunnel lay-outs, etc. prior to the next season and consideration is being given to training and Test Scheduling improvements in 2023, so as to help promote the new classes. Also, the ANKC is considering creating a new sport of “Barn Hunt”. Accordingly, each State was requested to set up a Barn Hunt Working Party to draft possible rules for review by the National Earthdog Committee. This process is still in its early stages.
TRAINING & PROMOTION
A new format was tried this year and worked well. Usually a single Training Day has been held a few weeks before the season start, this year a Training Weekend was held for the first time, one day for dogs without any qualifications and the other day for dogs with at least 1 qualification in any class. Also, a pre-season
Thanks must be given to the Committee who helped make the 2022 season a success and I wish the new Committee all the best. I believe the non-competitive nature of the Earthdog sport creates a great atmosphere of support for the competitors and fun for the dogs and I am sure that this will only grow in the future.
Good luck to everyone and their Terriers and Dachshunds in 2023!

Retrieving news
In the 59 years that sanctioned Retrieving Trials have been conducted in South Australia we have never had a local dog achieve the ultimate title – that of GRAND RETRIEVING TRIAL CHAMPION. (This title has been available since 2004).
That is until the end of last year when Ray Ashenden and his Labrador Retriever dog GR RT CH Nativerun Angus CM aka “Guss” broke the drought.
To gain this prestigious title a dog must be awarded 120 “championship points” of which at least 12 have to come from a Championship stake. The rest of the points can be awarded in All Age stakes where a win earns 6 points. So gaining a “Grand” requires a dog and handler combination to work at the highest level, winning consistently over an extended period of time.
Guss has had a stellar career – he is still only 5 years old – trialling with success both locally and interstate. He has won 37 All Age stakes and the final 12 points came when he won the Tasmanian State Championship trial in November 2022 under New Zealand judge Graeme Palmer.
Guss was the Top Retrieving Dog in Australia in 2021 and 2022 on the Retrieving Australia Leaderboard which tracks national scores for retrieving trial placegetters.
Congratulations on a wonderful partnership and we look forward to Ray and Guss flying the South Australian flag in retrieving trials well into the future.
RETRIEVING AND FIELD TRIAL RULES REVIEW 2022-3
The DOGS AUSTRALIA (formerly ANKC) rules review for a number of Retrieving & Field competitions continues this year.
South Australia is only eligible to have input into the review of Rules for the Conduct of Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs and the Retrieving Ability Test for Gundogs Judges Training Scheme in this current round, as we do not conduct the other types of trials being reviewed.
Last year we called for submissions and held an open meeting to consider them. As a result of that SA RAFT put in a proposal to DOGS AUST.
Now that the States’ proposals are in we are giving all SA retrieving enthusiasts, especially those who have competed in or are currently competing in RATG’s, the opportunity to direct how SA will vote at the National RAFT meeting, where the final decisions will be made.
You can find the list of submissions on the DOGS AUSTRALIA web site https://dogsaustralia.org.au/about-dogs-australia/2023-rule-reviewsubmissions-national-retrieving-field-trial-committee/ scroll down a short way and you will find (in yellow) the RATG sections (both Rules and Judges’ Training Scheme). You can go through each State’s submissions but there is also a “Document 1” where all submissions are listed together. Pages 1 to 19 of that document are the ones relevant to us.
SA RAFT will hold an open meeting at Dog SA David Roche Park in the Marsula Room on Sunday 12th March, commencing at 9 am
If you wish to actively participate in this rule review you must read the submissions prior to the meeting and come prepared to vote “Yes” or “No” to each of them. There will be limited time for discussion because of the number of submissions to consider.

SA State Team Selection for National Agility Championships – Adult Competition
As competitors may be aware, each Agility National Championship holds a State Team Competition. Each state selects five dog and handler teams, and one Reserve team, to run over both an agility and jumping course. The winning State Team is decided by the combination of total faults accumulated by each team.
The South Australian State Team will be determined by competitors who best meet the criteria outlined in this document. The criteria include self-nomination for consideration, an intention to travel to the Nationals, results from the previous trialling year, and a good standing within the SA Agility community (refer to point 6 below). Selection based upon trial results has been chosen as one of the selection criteria as it best demonstrates ability and consistency.
The dog and handler combinations with the top five best results will be awarded a place on the SA State Team. The dog and handler combination with the sixth best result will be awarded the Reserve position. If one of the dog and handler combinations in the State Team is unable to compete on the day of the National competition, the Reserve dog and handler will step into their place on the team.
Selection Criteria:
1. Handlers must reside within South Australia, and be financial members of Dogs SA. Dogs must be registered with Dogs SA. Any coowners of the dog must also be a financial member of an ANKC-affiliated State Body.
2. The dog must be competing in Excellent or Masters in both Jumping and Agility (i.e. must have a JD and AD ANKC title at minimum).
3. Dog and handler combinations must self-nominate to be considered for a position on the State Team. Selfnomination can be completed by emailing the Agility Advisory Committee (AAC) Secretary by Friday March 17th at the following address: secretary@agilitysa.net
4. Dog and handler combinations must be intending on travelling to the Nationals competition.
5. Runs from the previous trialling year will be scored according to the process detailed in the ‘Scoring’ section below.
6. If the owner/handler or a dog is found guilty at an Investigation hearing of a breach of Dogs SA Rules during the qualifying period, they will be ineligible for consideration.
Scoring
Results from the trialling year prior to the Nationals date will be scored, with team selection points given in the following priority order:
1. Double Qualifications (i.e. a qualification in both agility and jumping in the same trial, excluding Opens) – 10 points each
2. Single Elite Agility Qualifications – 4 points each
3. Single Elite Jumping Qualifications – 3 points each
4. Single Masters Agility Qualifications – 3 points each
5. Single Masters Jumping Qualifications – 2 points each
6. Single Excellent Agility Qualifications – 2 points each
7. Single Excellent Jumping Qualifications – 1 point each
Using these rules, each dog and handler combination’s results will be considered. The five combinations with the highest number of points will be chosen to comprise the State Team, and the dog and handler combination with the sixth best result will be selected as the Reserve team member.
In the event of a tied result, the dogs’ course time will also be compared against the SCT for each qualification. The dog that scores the faster times will be granted the team or reserve placing. For example, an ADM clear round: Score = (SCT subtract Course time) e.g. SCT 60s, Course Time 46.65s. Score 13.35.
Please note: Points will be tallied by the AAC and taken from results provided by each club to Dogs SA.
For further information, clarification, or to register a selfnomination, please contact the AAC Secretary at secretary@ agilitysa.net

We are pleased to announce three interstate Judges will adjudicate both disciplines, DWD and Tricks, over the weekend. They are, Niccola Hardakers (ACT), Rochelle Manderson (V) and Sue Cordwell (V). Access to the Two Wells Hall will be made available in the afternoon of Friday 14th for entrants to practice (for a small fee), following setting up in the morning by volunteers.
On Monday 17th a DWD Workshop at David Roche Park is being planned to wrap up what is planned to be a most enjoyable long weekend. Schedules and other information to keep you up to date will be posted on a range of media. Dogs SA DWD Advisory Committee is proud to host its fourth State DWD Championship and second State Tricks Test this year on behalf of Dogs SA and welcomes participation in this special weekend by all DWDers and Tricksters.
Margaret Bourn Chair, Dogs SA DWD Advisory Committee
The key component of a special weekend planned for 15th & 16th April this year will be the celebration of a decade of Dances with Dogs Competitions for members of Dogs SA. Official recognition of this fun and challenging sport by the Australian National Kennel Council was first granted in 2009 to Queensland, with other States following.
South Australia joined the ranks in 2011 and conducted its first DWD sanctioned Competition in 2012. Prior to that a number of Dogs SA members had been forming small groups to train themselves and give demonstrations at public events. Since that time this sport has seen healthy growth with a dedicated Club being formed and now at least 8 competitions held annually, including at the Adelaide Royal Show.
The morning of the 15th April, will see the DWD Competition celebrate this ten-year milestone with a special award being bestowed by President Brian Parker.
The afternoon Competition will be the 2023 DWD State Championship with the winner being awarded the Dogs SA State Champion perpetual Trophy (for highest score) donated by Urban Pet Food. Other special Awards will be issued to recognise effort and achievement in a range of areas.
Sunday 16th will see the second State Tricks Tests held for South Australia, with three Tests held concurrently on the old bowling Green at David Roach Park for the first time. A long list of Special perpetual Awards are being
