President’s Report

The old office has a new name, “The Kings Room” after Harold and Eunice King who were both long time members and contributors to the association. Thank you, Beck Bush, for the suggestion. The Facebook comments indicate it certainly appears to be a very popular choice!

I would like to thank all of the members who attended and contributed to the forums in relation to the proposed draft Constitution. There was robust discussion and some good suggestions made. All the suggestions are being considered and a second draft of the proposed Constitution should be released shortly for further consideration by the members. We will not be holding additional forums but if you have any further comments or suggestions, please forward them to our Executive Officer, Deb via the info@dogssa.com.au email or to her direct email. The final draft will then be distributed 21 days prior to an SGM where members will vote to accept the new Constitution.

The grounds are slowly improving with the exception of ring 7 which has again become a bog. Council will be working with the grounds staff to identify why this has again occurred and what can be done to rectify the situation. Please do not place mats on the ground when setting up the day before a show. This prevents the grass from breathing and causes the grass to thin and die off. Council does not want to impose more regulations – lets all just do the right thing.

The EO and I are still in communication with the DCMB and have a good working relationship. This is most important at the moment with the 8 recommendations for changes to the various Acts and Regulations that affect us as dog lovers being debated. DACO is also back online just in time for registration renewal time which is from 01 July 2023. Please ensure you either log onto DACO or visit your local office to update yours and your dog and cat details. As an organisation that promotes responsible dog ownership, we very much need to model responsible behaviour and do that right thing.

Hot Weather Rules for Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Earthdog, Herding, Dances with Dogs, Lure Coursing, Scent Work and Sled Sport

10. The following Exhibitions must be postponed or cancelled or the commencement time amended to not before 7.00pm when the forecast temperature at 10.00a.m from the bom.gov.au site two days prior for (02/23)

(a) Conformation Exhibitions, is 35 degrees Celsius or higher; (02/23)(b) Obedience, Agility, Earthdog, Lure Coursing Trials and Dances with Dogs Competitions, is 34 degrees Celsius or higher; and (07/21)

(c) Herding Trials, Tests and training and Scent Work, is 30 degrees Celsius or higher. (01/22)

(d) Tracking Trials, is 32 degrees Celsius or higher (01/16)(e) Sled Sport – Sled Racing 15 degrees Celsius or higher, BackPacking/Hiking 25 degrees Celsius or higher Weight Pull 20 degrees Celsius or higher. (06/17)

(f) Retrieving, Field and RATG is 32 degrees Celsius or higher unless there is ample swimming on property. (01/19)

This temperature and timeline will be final for the decision to postpone or cancel or amend the commencement time of an Exhibition. (02/23)

11. For multiple Exhibitions scheduled for a weekend, only those Exhibitions where the temperature does not comply with those specified in these rules, may be postponed or cancelled or the commencement time amended (02/23)

12. It is the responsibility of an exhibitor to check two days prior to the Exhibition that the bom.gov.au forecasted temperature for the day, at the locality where the Exhibition is to be held, is in accordance with these rules. (02/23)

13. All schedules must state that where an Exhibition is cancelled in accordance with the Hot Weather Rules, no entry fees will be refunded.

THE KINGS ROOM

attitude and manner, immaculately dressed, a very recognisable personality in SA for many years. Eunice was Harold’s biggest supporter. The thing was which some would not have known, is that Harold did not drive. Therefore, for every steward appointment where Eunice would assist in the office, she was also the driver for them both. Right throughout those cold winters where we, as trainee judges, would all come to lectures at Dogs SA, Eunice would sit in the car, in the carpark and wait for Harold. Dedication to the volunteer efforts displayed by both of them were to be admired.

Harold had a quick wit, and really had a great sense of humour. I respected him and appreciated the time he dedicated to Dogs SA over so many years.

Finally, we have renamed the old office at the rear of the Off Lead area, The Kings Room.

The King’s Room is named in honour of Harold and Eunice King (both passed in 2019).

Harold was a Ring Steward at Dog’s SA for over 40 years. Always a familiar face at weekly Dogs Shows in SA, he was also a steward at Adelaide Royal Show for many years. He exhibited Dachshunds commencing in 1967 with his wife Eunice. Harold was also an All Breeds Judge obtaining that status in 1973 and he judged throughout the world. He was also a life member of the Dachshund Club of SA, the Hound Club of SA, Sporting Dog Club of SA and Metropolitan Kennel Club.

My personal memories of Harold were as the Hound Group Leader when I commenced on the Judge’s Training Scheme in the 1990’s. Back in those days when the requirement was to judge 200 dogs at Open Shows before being eligible for elevation, it was common to take 5 or more years before you could sit the final exams. Therefore, I spent 5 years on the Hound Group going to lectures that were delivered by Harold, all throughout winter at Dogs SA which would commonly go for 2 hours. Harold was one of my first mentors for judging and we had many conversations over the years where his knowledge was shared. Harold was always professional in his

OBEDIENCE & RALLY ANNUAL AWARDS

The qualifying period will be from 1st October of one year to 30 September the following year. If the last trial in September and the first trial in October fall on the same weekend, i.e. 30 September and 1 October, both trials will count for the earlier trialling year.

Results from all trials held in South Australia during this period will be eligible. Results from trials held interstate will not be eligible. Results from Restricted trials will count towards the Top Dog Awards, but not for the Top Obedience Dog or Top Rally Dog awards.

Eligibility for these awards:

All competitors are required to lodge “Application for T itle” forms with the Dogs SA Office for any titles gained in all classes within the above dates to be considered Competitors are not allowed to enter a higher class unless titles are granted When titles are granted by the Offic e your results will be included in this year’s registers

To be eligible for the Country Dog awards the registered owner and the dog must NOT be domiciled closer than 100 kilometres by road from the Adelaide GPO. The registered owner must be a member of an affiliated Country based club and must nominate that club on their trial entry forms.

A country member cannot be considered for a metropolitan award for an Obedience or Rally class even if they are members of a metropolitan based club They are still eligible, howev er, to compete for the Top Obedience Dog and Top Rally Dog awards

If the owner/handler or a dog is found guilty at a Disciplinary hear ing of a breach of SACA Rules relating to behaviour at Exhibitions during the qualifying period, they will be ineligible for any award they may have otherwise been entitled to.

OBEDIENCE

TOP OBEDIENCE DOG

The Top Obedience Dog will be awarded to the dog that accumulates the highest number of points in the Open and Utility classes during the qualifying period. Only the best 13 results from each class for each dog will be counted. Points will be awarded on the basis of qualifications and placings gained as detailed below.

Qualifications: Utility Dog Excellent 40 points

30 points

15 points

points.

TOP COUNTRY OBEDIENCE DOG

The Top Country Obedience Dog will be awarded to the Country dog which scores the most points in the Top Obedience Dog Award.

TOP DOG CLASS AWARDS - OBEDIENCE

To be eligible for these awards the dog must have gained the relevant title during the qualifying period. Qualifications gained in prior years will count, as long as the 3rd qualification was gained during the qualifying period.

Top Dog awards will be offered in respect of the following classes:

Community Companion Dog (CCD) Novice (CD), Open (CDX), Utility (UD), Utility Dog Excellent (UDX)

Points will be allocated as follows:

Title points: Utility Dog Excellent 50 points

Utility 40 points

Open 30 points

Novice 20 points

Community Companion Dog 10 points

Bonus points for placings gained will also be awarded on the same basis as detailed above for the Top Obedience Dog.

The following formula will be used to determine the winning dogs.

The total of the number of title and placing bonus points will be divided by the number of trials in the relevant class the dog competed in to gain its title. This will give an overall score.

For example, if a dog gains its Utility title with 1 first placing, 1 second placing and a third, and competed in 10 trials to achieve its 3 qualifications, its score would be:

Utility title points

50 points

Placing bonus points (20+15+10) 45 points

Total 95 points

Divide by 10 (the total number of trials entered) 9.5 overall score

The dog with the highest overall score in each class will be the Top Dog for that class.

Tied Scores

In the event of tied scores in a particular class, the number of points awarded by the Judges in three qualifying trials will be added together and the dog with the highest total will be the winner. If there is still a tie then multiple awards will be presented.

RALLY OBEDIENCE

TOP RALLY DOG

The Top Rally Dog award will go to the dog that accumulates the highest number of points in the Master, Excellent and Advanced classes during the qualifying period. Only the best 7 results from each class for each dog will be counted. Points will be awarded on the basis of qualifications and placings gained as detailed below.

Qualifications: Master 30 points

Excellent 20 points Advanced 10 points

Placings: 1st 20 points

2nd 15 points 3rd 10 points.

To assist in accurate recording of results, it is essential that ALL competitors correctly enter the dog’s name (including all titles) on their entry forms. Clubs are asked to ensure that these titles and the club represented by the competitor are entered into trial catalogues.

Following on from the RAFT Advisory training nights and daytime seminar, RAFTCOSA conducted practical retrieving training for Beginners and Triallers the two week-ends either side of Easter. Quite a few new people and their various breeds of Gundogs turned up and under the tutelage of Julie and Ben Kradolfer have continued as a training group. The first week-end of Retrieving Trials in SA has been run and won. RAFTCOSA conducted trials at Grand Cru Estate in the Barossa Valley and results follow. Numbers were a bit thin with 8 Weimaraner entries being pulled out just before closing due to owners contracting Covid the week prior at the Weimaraner National. Judges were Peter Doley and Helen Pownall from Victoria with Jeff Patrick stepping in for the Covid affected contracted judge (who also had officiated at the Wei. National) in Saturday’s All Age and Ben Kradolfer doing the other day’s All Age; his first AA appointment since gaining his upgraded licence. Very exciting for Retrieving, the 2 Top Retrieving Gundogs in Australia (2022 Retrieving Australia Leaderboard), both Labrador Retrievers, are now competing against each other with Russell Whitechurch moving from Victoria to SA. Plus our own Ray Ash’s Guss, Leaderboard winner for the last 2 years.

The next Retrieving Trials For Gundogs are on the June long week-end in the Tolderol area and being run by the GSP Club and RAFTCOSA. Spectators welcome, please leave your dogs at home or in the car and bring appropriate wet weather gear.

1. At dog shows breeds are often judged upon aesthetic appeal rather than functional efficiency. At times extremes are developed in the mistaken belief that if a little is good a lot is better, such as over-angulation in German Shepherd Dogs, and the trotting style and long neck in Afghan Hounds. The coat and sloping toplines of the Cocker Spaniel are another example. Boxers, Poodles and a few other square breeds of dogs have been developed to possess long forward reach of the front paw during the trot; it is very pleasing to the eye but very counterproductive to minimum energy consumption.

2. By authority of the Standard a judge is often asked to make decisions by criteria that can be proved to be functionally incorrect. The rules of the game are that the judge should judge by the Standard if possible. Judging is more an art than a science.”

This book is based on the previous books by Curtis & Thelma Brown, Dog Locomotion and Gait Analysis is one of those that I have already reviewed and liked a lot. Hopefully, I will soon have a copy of “the art and science of judging dogs” as well.

So, if you have felt like your life is lacking reference to the African hunting dog, this book will fill the void. Yet again many different animals feature throughout to demonstrate natures solution to construction and how it compares to our own.

This was actually one of the first reference books I purchased many years ago and one I have often returned to as I lived through my breeds. Rarely will you turn a page without a simple, clear diagram to help you understand or a photo of a top quality dog to show the desired outcome in a real dog.

Many of the photos I can picture in my mind and yet I actually cannot remember any that were not of well balanced, quality examples. I much prefer the positive reinforcement of constantly putting good examples in my eye to help train me for what is correct in each breed.

Each aspect of the structure of a dog is broken down and not only described, but many different versions are spoken about with the more distinct ones having visual examples. Things like the Chow Chow hocks’ unique structure has a side by side comparison (pictured) to ensure understanding.

My personal favourite is the diagram of shoulder measurement (pictured) that shows what we are actually measuring. Many articles talk about “true” angles not matching the ideal and this diagram shows why that is. However, we all measure from the same places as we cannot see the actual bones.

Nostril shape, eye shape, skull, chest, feet, croup angles, tail length to the effect of varying the length of 1 bone in a structure are all set out in a manner that I have always admired for its simplicity. The ability to impart knowledge effectively is always something I have held in very high regard.

As an example of the detail, there are 31 pages of glossary just to cover off the finer points that some breeds use commonly but others may not. This is a section I have gone to many times over the years, as some people use similar phrases to mean very different things.

For those that like to work one group at a time, they have taken the time to work through the major subgroups such as Terrier, Mastiff, Spitz, Sighthound and so on. These sections talk about the common purpose within these groups and then set out the major differences to help ensure you are not looking for a generic dog.

This is a book I would say is compulsory reading for anyone interested in understanding dogs. When you order this one don’t forget a pack or 2 of sticky tabs so you can mark the many sections you will want to come back to.

Dances with Dogs 10th Anniversary Competition, State Championship and Triple Tricks Tests, 2023 Report

A most successful weekend on 15th and 16th April was enjoyed by the biggest entry seen at a SA DWD and Tricks State Championship, with a large contingent of interstate entrants who took out many of the top prizes. In DWD spectators were treated to some really entertaining performances, enhanced by spectacular costumes and great dog work. The bold initiative to conduct three Tricks Tests held on the Sunday also attracted a record entry, producing some very good scores

In Saturday, Alex Mateer and Bella’s almost perfect scores scooped the pool of Awards by winning Highest Overall Score for the 10th Anniversary DWD Competition, being awarded The Golden Gilda Trophy, as well as the State Championship DWD Competition perpetual trophy donated by Urban Pet Food. This outstanding team also won Best Spectator Appeal.

Our puppies are given the best start to life being exclusively fed Medium Puppy and our adults are conditioned on Premium Performance Sport.
