President’s Report

Here we are another month and summer coming to a close, although who would know with the temperatures being so high. As many are already aware Dogs SA has changed its weather app from Elders to the BOM Weather App. The reason for the change is the Bom site changes every 3 hours so it is more up to date with the weather predictions. Council will also be reviewing the Hot Weather Policy before next summer to ensure it meets current community standards for both the welfare of the dogs and also exhibitors.

Council with the aid of a constitutional expert is reviewing the Dogs SA Constitution to ensure it complies with current legislation and meets best practice whilst still serving the needs of the membership. Council is in the final throws of reviewing the content before it goes to the members for review and consultation. Depending on the interest of members Council will hold a consultative meeting in the coming months prior to drafting the final document for members to vote on at a Special General Meeting of the members which will be conducted in accordance with the current constitution and the Associations Incorporation Act.

Dogs SA had a better-than-expected year in 2022 which generated a significant profit for the Association. As such Council elected to return approximately 1/3 of the profit back to the members in the form of a $500 credit to all of the Affiliated Clubs. The increased profit was derived from a number of areas including some very astute practices implemented by the Executive Officer which saved us considerable dollars in areas such as insurance and banking. A significant increase in membership fees also added to the profit of the Association along with income from the Journal. Full details will be available in the financial report which will be available prior to the AGM. The canteen also traded well during the year with not just a profit of approximately $20,000 but also almost a payout to clubs of $20,000 to clubs for operating the canteen on weekends.

Dogs SA currently has a tender out for the renewal of the BBQ area which is long overdue to meet current food standards and make it easier for the clubs operating both the BBQ and deep fryer. Council considered this a good investment into the future considering the commission paid to the clubs and the canteen profit. Other improvements underway is the remarking of the car parks. These will be made an additional 300mm wider to assist in the parking of trailers and removing equipment from vehicles. New concrete is also being laid at both entrances to the off lead area. Many will be aware of the mud slide at the entrance to the off lead area during the 2022 Winter International, well not again.

As I alluded to earlier the Dogs SA AGM is rapidly approaching. It is being held on Wednesday 22 March 2023 at 7.PM at David Roche Park. It would be appreciated if members could notify the office of their intended attendance so we know where to set up for the meeting. Also as usual depending on time there may also be an opportunity for a Q&A session after the close of the meeting. If you have something you would like answered please inform the office so a researched response can be provided.

REGULATIONS

Applications from TRAINEE JUDGES for Theory Examinations will only be accepted if the following criteria has been completed.

6.1.1 Module 1. Breed Lectures / Field Events / Seminars

With the exception of Distance Trainee Judges, Trainee Judges must attend a lecture on every breed in the Group at least once within the previous 2 years before applying for a Theory Examination. Trainee Judges are encouraged to attend any other Field Days and Seminars arranged by the Member Body. (Amended EAP 05/10, 10/10) The breed lecture series is to be run by the controlling body over a minimum 12 months period with a lecture for every breed in the group to be presented over that time. (a) A Trainee Judge must be present for and participate in the entire lecture in order to be credited with attendance. (b) Should a Trainee judge miss any Breed Lecture, they must within 14 days, of the lecture, submit to the Member Body, a minimum one thousand (1,000) word essay on the Breeds dealt with in the missed lectures. Essays on a maximum of 25% of the breeds within the Group may be submitted over the period of the lecture series for missed lectures. (Amended 10/10) (c) In the event that a lecture for a particular breed is not offered, a written essay of a minimum one thousand word (1,000) word essay on that breed will be required by the end of the Lecture Series. (Amended 10/10) (d) Essays are to contain a history and description of the breed, its purpose and all relevant requirements contained in the Breed Standard and are to be illustrated with drawings/pictures. All essays are subject to approval of the CJTC as conforming with the conditions of this clause and achieving the required level of competency. 6. (e) Failure to submit the essays, in accordance with 6.1.1 (b), (c) and (d), will render the Trainee ineligible to sit the Group Theory Examination in the current Training Program.

6.1.2 Module 2. Practical Experience

Judge a minimum of fifty (50) dogs and additionally examine and critique a minimum fifty dogs (50) from the relevant Group. The breeds covered must be from, as wide a range as possible, but will include at least five (5) critiques from each of the five (5) Major Breeds as determined by the Member Body CJTC. This may be achieved by attending Field days or shows. All critiques to be countersigned on the day by a licensed judge for that breed who have themselves examined the dogs critiqued Judging may be in the form of hands on experience by placing dogs at open shows, sweepstakes or field days, but not at breed lectures. (Amended 10/13 – 5.6.4) (Amended 10/14, 7.4.2)

Applications from TRAINEE JUDGES for Practical Examinations will only be accepted if the following criteria has been completed and is lodged with the application:

(a) A Pass is achieved in the Theory Examination.

(b) 6.1.2 Module 2. Practical Experience ANKC regulations. Judge a minimum of fifty (50) dogs and additionally examine and critique a minimum fifty (50) dogs from the relevant Group. The breeds covered must be from, as wide a range

as possible, but will include at least five (5) Major Breeds as determined by the Member Body CJTC. This may be achieved by attending Field days or shows.

Judging may be in the form of hands on experience by placing dogs at open shows, sweepstakes or field days, but not at breed lectures. (Amended 10/13 – 5.6.4)

All critiques to be countersigned on the day by an accredited Assessor/Mentor

Accredited Assessor A person licensed as a Judge by ANKC who complies with Section 8 of these Regulations.

Mentor An ANKC Championship Show Judge who has completed the ANKC Assessor Accreditation Program as outlined in Section 8.1 of these regulations.

8. Appointment of Assessors. To be appointed by the Conformation Judges Training Committee, an Assessor must not be a Trainee Judge in the current Judges Training Program and must;

8.1 Hold a Certificate of Approval issued under the ANKC Accreditation Program stating that the Assessor has completed the competency training.

8.2 Have held an ANKC Breed or Group Licence for a minimum of five (5) years for the Group or Breed being used in the examination.

8.3 Have judged the Group or Breed being used in the examination on at least three (3) occasions.

All Critiques and signed evidence of dogs judged must be submitted at time of applying for Practical Examination.

Critiques are NOT to be signed by family members and no more than 10 critiques may be signed off by one person.

Trainee Judges must be assessed whilst judging by an Accredited Examiner on at least 2 occasions.

Should a Trainee not achieve a pass result in a Practical Examination, then to qualify to take a further Group Practical Examination a Trainee judge must judge a further twenty-five (25) dogs and examine and critique a further fifty (50) dogs, in accordance with 6.1.2 of ANKC LTD Regulations and submit the approved enrolment form accompanied by the requirements of this clause. They may then attempt the next available Practical Examination.

Neutered Register

To transfer to the Neutered Register please lodge your pedigree with the desexing certificate and the payment of $25.00

You are not eligible to compete in Class 18 or 18A until the transfer has been done.

2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)

3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.

4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.

5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)

(a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20)

(b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20)

(c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (11/21)

(d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20)

(e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20)

(f) A current veterinary certificate is defined as a certificate dated within three months prior to the mating. (11/21)

6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.

7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)

8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.

9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)

10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.

11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)

12. I shall ensure that every dog in every litter I breed will be registered as required in the SACA Rules. (07/22)

The Dogs SA RAFT Advisory Committee is pleased to present a training seminar by two of Australia’s most successful retrieving trial competitors. This is a rare opportunity to learn from some of the best in the game. The format for the seminar starts in the classroom in the morning, followed by some practical demonstrations later in the day.

Please note this is a theory seminar covering all aspects of training a dog for retrieving trials, there will be some practical demonstrations but you will not be working with your own dog. Due to the length of the seminar - 9 am until approximately 3 pm - we suggest that you leave your dog at home.

DOG / PUPPY / NEUTER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION GUIDELINES

Dogs SA Show Dog / Puppy / Neuter of the Year competition will be conducted on a date to be approved by Council each year.

Qualifying period shall commence on the first Monday after the Adelaide Royal Show and will conclude on the final day of the following Adelaide Royal Show.

Qualifying wins for Show Dog, Puppy & Neuter of the Year will be all Championship Shows sanctioned by Dogs SA and held in South Australia.

At least one owner of the dog must reside in South Australia, be a financial member of Dogs SA at the time of the qualifying win/s and at the date of the event. All other owners must be financial members of their controlling body.

To Quality for this event:

Show Dog of the Year – your dog must have been awarded one of the following:

• All Breeds Best in Show

• All Breeds RU Best in Show

• Deemed to be one of the top 3 dogs in your group, excluding dogs already qualified under the first 2 dot points. This will be calculated on a point score of 2 points for Best in Group or Best in Show Specialty and 1 point for RU Best in Group or Specialty. The points to be calculated at the end of the qualifying period with the top 3 dogs deemed the qualifiers (excluding the BIS & RUBIS winners)

Puppy of the Year – your puppy must have been awarded:

• All Breeds Baby, Minor or Puppy in Show

NOTE: Puppy qualifiers must be 6 months old at the completion of the qualifying period for the current year, i.e. on the final day of the Adelaide Royal Show

Neuter of the Year – your neuter must have been awarded:

• All Breeds Best Neuter in Show

• All Breeds RU Best Neuter in Show Judges:

• The judging panel must consist of at least three ‘All Breeds’ Judges.

• No more than two judges to come from the same jurisdiction.

• It is preferable that all judges have not judged in South Australia in the preceding 12 months.

• Two judges will be announced prior to the event, when invitations are sent to qualifiers.

• One judge will be a mystery judge, (or more if more than three are required) and announced at the time of the event.

* *The committee reserve the right to alter or amend the above requirements in unforeseen circumstances.

Judging Format:

• Order of Judging will commence with Neuter of the Year, then Puppy of the Year, followed by Show Dog of the Year.

• The first-round draw in each category will be by random ballot and may be subject to multiple dogs as required (no single dog rounds unless unavoidable).

• Exhibitors with more than one dog in the same category cannot draw each other in the first round.

• Judging is a knockout competition with the judges assessing each dog independently. The winner of each round will advance to the next round until the eventual winner is declared.

Maria In-Coelum Perdigão (Brazil)

Maria PerDigao started in Weimaraners in the mid1970s and had great success exhibiting and breeding. She has been breeding Rhodesian Ridgebacks since 1998 and Portuguese Podengo since 2012 very successfully. Maria Perdigao has been a regular presenter at Seminars and online activities. Maria has judged throughout Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Australia.

Jean-Louis Blais & Madeleine Charest (Canada)

Jean-Louis Blais has been showing/breeding Labrador Retrievers since 1982. CHABLAIS Labradors has been owned by Jean-Louis Blais and Madeleine Charest since 1979. Jean-Louis commenced judging in 2005 and has judged shows in Brazil, Finland, USA, Denmark, France, Argentina, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, Spain, Japan, U.K, Poland and Costa Rica. Madeleine is approved for Labradors.

Gerson Ayala (Guatemala)

Gerson Ayala has been a breeder, exhibitor and handler since 1989 and has bred British and French Bulldogs, Pugs, oxers, Rottweilers, Basset Hounds, Mini Smooth and Mini Wirehaired Dachshunds. His judging assignments have taken him to most South American countries as well as around the world including Mexico, Australia, Japan, Spain, Greece, Canada, Switzerland, Lithuania, Philippines and Taiwan.

Pedro Gonzalez-Teja (Guatemala)

Pedro Gonzalez-Teja started as an exhibitor in 1972 and amongst breeds he has been involved with are Dachshunds, Bullmastiff, British Bulldogs, Akita, Basenji, Golden Retrievers, Chihuahuas and Alaskan Malamutes. Pedro has been judging since 1992 and has had appointments all around South America, Philippines, China, United States, Mexico, Canada and Australia.

Thukaram Preetham (India)

Thukaram Preetham started showing dogs at a very young age as a Junior handler with Great Danes. Later on, with his father, he started exhibiting and breeding Whippets, Labradors and German Shepherds. He has exhibited and/or bred several other breeds including Dobermans, Pugs, Fox Terriers (Smooth), Afghan Hound. An AllBreeds Judge, he has judged in all parts of India and overseas in China, New Zealand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Japan and different states of Australia.

Mukul Vaid (India)

Mukul Vaid and his wife Anjeli have been breeding and showing dogs for over 45 years. Amongst the various breeds they have bred and shown include German Shepherd Dogs, Boxers, Rottweilers, Dobermanns, Labrador and Golden Retrievers, English and American Cockers, West Highland White terriers, Skye and Cairn Terriers, Standard Dachshunds, Greyhounds, Beagles, Afghans, Akitas, Pomeranians and Chihuahuas. Mr Vaid has judged extensively internationally including Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Japan and South Africa.

Anjeli Vaid (India)

Anjeli Vaid from childhood has had dogs as companions, from St.Bernards, Tibetan Terriers, Dobermans and Pomeranians. With her husband Mukal, she has bred and shown many breeds including West Highland White terriers, Skye and Cairn Terriers, Boxers, British Bulldogs, Labrador and Golden Retrievers, Tibetan Terriers, Boxers and Akita. Mrs Vaid has judged all over India and many overseas countries.

Dr Agus Wardhana (Indonesia)

Dr Agus Wardhana is a Veterinarian and All Breeds Judge of The Indonesian Kennel Club. He has bred and owned Miniature Pinschers, Miniature Dachshunds, and Chihuahuas since 1980 and from 2004 has also bred and owned Basenji, Chihuahua Smooth and Indonesia’s national dog The Bali Kintamani Dog. His judging experience includes judging in many parts of Indonesia, in many Asian, Australia, Europe countries and also in South Africa and Canada.

Vincent O’Brien (Ireland)

Vincent O’Brien began his career in dogs in 1970 with a pair of imported Dobermann Pinschers. He established his Vincenza Kennels in 1972 and has since become one of his country leading figures in the Dobermann breed. Mr O’Brien is an all-rounder judge and he has judged in over 46 countries, and 6 continents in his career to date. Mr. O’Brien is a founding member of the Standard Schnauzer and Dobermann clubs of Ireland, and a member of the Irish Kennel Clubs special events committee.

Takahiro Miyagawa (Japan)

Takashiro Miyagawa began breeding and showing Boxers in 1959, and after that, has been also involved in breeding Shih Tzu, Maltese, Pomeranians and Poodles. Approved as an all-breed judge in 1972, he has been judging at many shows throughout Japan and many overseas countries including Hungary, Taiwan, Philippines, Norway, Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, Italy, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Korea, Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and China.

Yoshio Mori (Japan)

Yoshio Mori has been involved in dogs from a very young age. He started with a German Shepherd Dog and then became interested in Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs finishing with over 50 Championship titles. Yoshi had to choose between showing and judging and chose to show dogs for 15 years before he returned to judging in 1998. He has judged in many parts of the World including England, America, China and Russia.

FCI Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion Title (FCI A20 Ch.)

The Dogs SA Winter International Committee is excited to announce the Winter International Championship Show on Sunday 4th June 2023 is approved as an official FCI A20 Show and is eligible to award A20 CAC’s. (Challenge Certificates)

Many FCI countries around the world award ‘Regional Titles’, for example in the FCI Americas Section there are regional titles such as Pan American Champion and Latin America Champion.

The regional Australian FCI title is the Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion, in the short form FCI A20 Champion (FCI A20 Ch.), which came into effect 17th June 2019.

Due to the structure of the ANKC and the way individual States Bodies manage and run their own affairs, dispensation is given to Australian exhibitors to qualify for FCI A20 Section titles, in that A20 CAC’s won in different countries be replaced with individual States counting as different countries.

Requirements to attain Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion

Titles in Australia:

To obtain the title of Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion: A dog/bitch who is already an Australian Champion or Champion of an FCI member country, must win FOUR A20CS CAC’s dog/bitch at any FCI A20 Championship Show (A20CS) organised by any of the ANKC State bodies or approved Clubs within the State.

To obtain the title of Asia, Africa & Oceania Grand Champion: A dog/bitch who is already an Australian Champion or Champion of an FCI member country, must win EIGHT A20CS CAC’s dog/bitch at any FCI A20 Championship Show (A20CS) organised by any of the ANKC State bodies or approved Clubs within the State. At least TWO of the Eight A20CS CAC must be won in different States of Australia.

To obtain the title of Asia, Africa & Oceania Supreme Champion: A dog/bitch who is already an Australian Champion or Champion of an FCI member country, must win TWELVE A20CS CAC’s dog/bitch at any FCI A20 Championship Show (A20CS) organised by any of the ANKC State bodies or approved Clubs within the State PLUS win a BIS1 (Best in Show 1) at an A20CS. At least THREE of the twelve A20CS CAC must be won in different States of Australia.

Awarding of A20CS CAC’s

The A20CS CAC’s are awarded to the Best Dog & Best Bitch OR Dog CAC & Bitch CAC at a Championship Show. The Show does not have to be a CACIB/International Show and the awarding of the A20CS CAC’s follow the ANKC Rules with the regards to the awarding of the Best Dog & Best Bitch OR Dog CAC & Bitch CAC.

Winter International CACIB Show INFORMATION TO EXHIBITORS

Order of Judging

Breed Level

1. The order of judging is as follows

DOGS

1) Baby Puppy Dogs - For dogs aged three months and under six months (not eligible for CACIB)

2) Minor Puppy Dogs - For dogs aged six months and under nine months. (not eligible for CACIB)

3) Puppy - For dogs aged six months and under twelve months (not eligible for CACIB)

4) Junior - For dogs aged nine months and under eighteen months. (providing the winner is over 15months of age a CACIB may be awarded)

5) Intermediate - For dogs aged eighteen months and under thirty-six months a CACIB may be awarded)

6) Open - For dogs 15 months and over that are not Champions

7) Champion - To enter a dog in Champion Class, the title must have been confirmed by the issue of a Registered Pedigree Certificate with the title added by the day of the official closing date of entries; a Champion that has not attained 15 months of age may not be awarded a CACIB

b. Challenge/CACIB

1) All class winners from CLASSES .2 - 7 are eligible for the ANKC Challenge and are to enter the ring

2) The judge selects the Challenge winner from those dogs in the ring. Should the Challenge winner be eligible for the CACIB (Junior over 15 months, Intermediate, Open, Champion over 15 months and awarded excellent then they will automatically be awarded the CACIB.

3) The second placed dog from the class of the Challenge winner then enters the ring.

4) The judge selects the Reserve Challenge winner. Should the reserve challenge winner be eligible for a CACIB then if the Challenge winner was not eligible it will be awarded the CACIB.

5) Should neither the Challenge or Reserve Challenge winners be eligible for the CACIB then if any of the class winners were eligible they then remain in the ring for the judge to award the CACIB from those eligible only.

d. Best of Breed

1) Best of Breed judging is conducted in the normal manner for the Alternate judging procedure which is Best and R/U Best of Breed followed by only Baby Puppy and Puppy Classes. Best in Group and Best in Show judging is judged in accordance with the current regulations for the Alternate method. That being Best in Group 4, 3, 2, 1, followed by Baby Puppy and Puppy. Similarly, Best in Show is judged 2, 1, followed by Baby Puppy and Puppy
