President’s Report

The end of August and the first half of September have been a busy period in SA with a number of significant events being staged here and interstate. The biggest of which would have been the Adelaide Royal Show with an entry of over 2,500 between the different disciplines represented. The new facility was a great success and there was a lot of praise for the exhibition surface. Mick Carter from the office set up the Dogs SA stand and staffed it for 3 and a half days over the Royal, with staff member Simon Squire holding the fort for 2 days. They also had an army of volunteers assisting them. The Royals Dog Committee have listened to several of the suggestions made to improve the event as we go forward and will implement some of them over the year.

The Obedience Advisory Committee hosted the State Obedience & Rally Championships in mid-September. I visited there on the Saturday and was very impressed with the way the event was both set up and being conducted. I spoke with a number of competitors there and we discussed what could be done to improve the notoriety of the Obedience and Agility clubs within the community. This will need to be a work in progress as these clubs are where many of the grass roots members are from.

A discipline which is small but obviously well represented is Retrieving with Mr Ray Ashenden and his Labrador Retriever, Gr RT Ch Nativerun Angus CM (Guss, as he prefers to be called) taking the honors in the 52nd National Championship Retrieving Trial for Gundogs in Western Australia. Congratulations Ray and Guss.

As we start moving into October and November, many of the clubs and Advisory Committees will be conducting their AGMs. As usual I will try to get to as many as I can but if your club has a particular interest in myself or another Councillor attending your AGM, please let the ofﬁce know so we can make the extra effort for you.

I am very aware that many clubs are hurting at the moment with both financial and volunteer participation. Therefore, Council at its August meeting set fees for the 2024 financial year and elected to only increase administration fees by CPI +1 %. Club levies and fees have been put on hold for another year to assist. Once the financial position of the Association is fully disclosed for the 2023 financial year Council may look if further relief can be provided to the clubs.

The new roller door for the canteen has now been ﬁtted but is still waiting on some ﬁnishing touches by the contractor. Once completed the servery will be replaced with a more user friendly and hygienic one including new appliances such hot and cold food display cabinets which comply with current food standards.

Council is committed to continual improvements on the facilities at David Roche Park which is available to not just conformation but also other sporting disciplines should they wish to utilize them. We have one of the best facilities in the country and they must be used with a user pays system to ensure they are maintained.

Also in this month’s journal is the notice of election for the position of Vice President and four Councillors. If you have any ambition to stand for a position please, either talk with myself or another Councillor to help determine if it is right for you and what you can offer the Association.

2023 THEORY & PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONS FOR CONFORMATION TRAINEE/ASPIRANT JUDGES

Application forms to apply for the Theory Exam to be held on Saturday 11th November 2023, is included in the Dogs SA September magazine and available on the Dogs SA website.

Applications will close on Friday 20th October 2023.

Alternative dates for either Theory or Practical Examinations will only be considered for work or health related matters and all requests must be accompanied by a certiﬁcate from the employer or health practitioner. If you have a health-related condition that prevents you from completing the Theory exam in the traditional manner, this will be taken into consideration on submission of your health practitioner’s certiﬁcate.

Practical Examinations are schedule for Saturday 9th December 2023 during the day but allowing for the Examinations to be moved to Saturday evening in the case of Hot Weather Policy activating.

Well done to every Junior Handler that competed in the state final. You all did an amazing job it was wonderful to watch. Huge congratulations to winners and places getters, and special thank you to the Dogs SA Junior Handler Committee for a fantastic weekend.

Looking forward to another great Snow Flake Spectacular State Final in 2024.

SACA (trading as Dogs SA) is a member of the Australian National Kennel Council Ltd (ANKC) and is the controlling canine body for the State. It is responsible for matters relating to breeding standards, the registration and exhibition of pure-bred dogs as well as the promotion and encouragement of recreational, sporting, training, and trialling activities of Dogs SA registered dogs.

Dogs SA is a non-profit organisation. It relies heavily on the support and voluntary involvement of many people to service its members and affiliated club organisations. Dogs SA is governed by an elected Council comprising a President, Vice-President and nine Councillors. The Council determines policies and procedures within the limits imposed by the SACA Constitution and Rules, the ANKC Ltd Rules and the regulatory environment of Common Law and legislative obligations associated with State and Local Government bodies. The officers of Council and members of supporting Committees are not renumerated for their services or travelling expenses.

Any member considering nomination to a position on the Council should understand that regular evening meetings must be attended, and one must have available time to commit to the work involved including participating in various Council Committee meetings and activities. You must be prepared to serve as a team player and be able to offer to Council with enthusiasm, skills and experience required to help chart and drive the future viability of the Association.

Dogs SA is faced with the challenge of retaining its membership numbers and developing strategies and approaches relevant to the future needs of those who enjoy pride in responsible dog ownership against other competing demands in society.

10. The following Exhibitions must be postponed or cancelled, or the commencement time amended to not before 7.00pm when the forecast temperature at 10.00a.m from the bom.gov.au site two days prior for (02/23)

(a) Conformation Exhibitions, is 35 degrees Celsius or higher; (02/23)

(b) Obedience, Agility, Earthdog, Lure Coursing Trials and Dances with Dogs Competitions, is 34 degrees Celsius or higher; and (07/21)

(d) Tracking Trials, is 32 degrees Celsius or higher (01/16)

(e) Sled Sport – Sled Racing 15 degrees Celsius or higher, Backpacking/ Hiking 25 degrees Celsius or higher Weight Pull 20 degrees Celsius or higher. (06/17)

(f) Retrieving, Field and RATG is 32 degrees Celsius or higher unless there is ample swimming on the property. (01/19)

This temperature and timeline will be ﬁnal for the decision to postpone or cancel or amend the commencement time of an Exhibition. (02/23)

11. For multiple Exhibitions scheduled for a weekend, only those Exhibitions where either forecast or actual conditions invoke the provisions of these rules, may be postponed or cancelled or the commencement time amended. (02/23)

12. It is the responsibility of an exhibitor to check two days prior to the Exhibition that the bom.gov.au forecast temperature for the day, at the locality where the exhibition is to be held, is in accordance with these rules. (02/23)

Other Extreme Weather Invoking Safety Concerns

13. An Exhibition may be postponed, in accordance with 6. Above, or cancelled when either the forecast or actual weather is such that they present a threat to the wellbeing or safety of competitors or their dogs.

14. All schedules must state that where an Exhibition is cancelled in accordance with the Extreme Weather and Safety Rules, no entry fees will be refunded.

15. The Affiliate Member must notify SACA Office and officials of their decision to cancel or amend the start time of an exhibition immediately. (02/23)

(a) The decision must be made available to exhibitors within four hours by every possible means of communication – i.e. uploading the information onto the Dogs SA website, electronic media, verbal telephone communication etc. (02/23)

(b) Provision for the running of 2 night exhibitions consecutively can be made, specifying any changes to the judging format and the use of a reserve judge should entry numbers require. (02/23)

16. Where the Afﬁliate Member has cancelled an Exhibition, they must submit a copy of the catalogue to the Executive Ofﬁcer within 14 days of the cancellation. (01/22)

17. All levies from entries, fees, and ground hire fees where applicable will be paid to the SACA.

18. All contracted Judges, Stewards and SACA Representative fees must be paid on request.

19. Exception to these rules is where an Exhibition has been scheduled to be held in an air-conditioned venue or where the Exhibition is scheduled to start not before 7.00pm (02/23) or

JUDGES REPORT VENUE: LOVEDAY FIELD AND GAME GROUNDS

We were blessed with great weather for the setting up of runs and for competing. I was provided with a range of different terrain, sandhills, treed banks, open areas, splashy and swimming water with lignum. This provided a great opportunity to provide variety for the dogs and handlers. The trial was very well run, and everyone was supportive and great to deal with. I thank Dogs SA for the appointment and I thank everyone who worked in any capacity.

Runs 1 and 2 were judged concurrently with myself judging run 1 and Jeff Patrick judging run 2. The field was split in half with 15 dogs starting at run 1 and 16 dogs starting at run 2. This meant that not all dogs attempted both runs, some having been eliminated on the first run that they attempted.

31 dogs entered and there were no scratching’s on the day. 7 dogs successfully completed all 6 runs of the event.

RUN 1 DOUBLE MARK - A longish mark thrown first, right to left up a hill with vegetation encroaching on each side. The mark was clear all the way to the ground and the dog could be seen all the way to the mark. Second mark 4 seconds later was thrown half way up, also right to left, across the line to the first mark, clearly seen in the air but the fall and the pick up was obscured by shrubbery. Long mark to be retrieved first. 9 dogs failed this run – all picking up the short mark in error.

RUN 2 DOUBLE MARK AND RABBIT BLIND – Dogs had to go down into a gully, through or around sticks and shrubs, and then up a hill onto a rise to retrieve all game. A mark was thrown the left that went slightly away, and a mark was thrown the right, also slightly away but shorter. The rabbit blind was in the middle and needed to be retrieved first followed by the right mark and then the left memory mark. 5 dogs failed to complete this retrieve, and I believe that the memory mark created the most problems.

RUN 3 WATER MARK AND TWO BLINDS – 17 dogs came together after runs 1 and 2. The water mark was thrown into the middle of a lagoon, landing behind lignum bushes out of sight. The mark was clearly seen in the sky and the dogs also heard the splash. There was a blind to the left on the bank beside a tree, close to maximum distance, and a shorter blind to the right, also on land. Left, right, middle was the pick up order. Unfortunately, and surprisingly to me, I lost 7 dogs on this run, predominantly for picking up the water bird too soon.

RUN 4 DOUBLE RISE AND TWO BIRD – 10 dogs into run 4, a relatively simple double rise across a bit of splashy water, over two tracks and up a hill. The two bird fell as the dog was coming up to the first track on its way back, it was a short bird and in full view of the dogs. 2 dogs failed this run, one was handler error retrieving the two bird before the double rise and one handler chose to withdraw his dog on the double rise.

RUN 5 WALK UP MARK AND DOUBLE MARK – 8 dogs into the final day. A short walk up mark throwing away from the dogs, a longish mark going directly left and a middle mark coming forward. The left mark was retrieved first followed by the short walk up and then the middle bird. Most dogs had two good legs and one poor one. One dog failed to finish due to picking up the middle bird instead of the left mark.

RUN 6 MARK AND IN LINE DOUBLE FALLS – 7 dogs into the final run. The dogs saw a mark across water to the right, it was clear in the sky but the last part of the fall was obscured by a lignum bush in the water. Once the dogs were out in the water two double fall birds were cast into shallow water with lignum in front and to the left of the dog. The birds were cast almost simultaneously and could be retrieved in any order after the mark had been completed. All completed this run. 2 dogs impressively, and unexpectedly to me, took on the lignum bush in the water on the way to the mark, pushing through very thick cover.
