President’s Report

As many are aware, Deb Lee the Dogs SA Executive Officer resigned from her position. I am not going into detail as enough has been said throughout the Dogs SA bush telegraph. Deb, during her 19 months as EO, did a number of good things for the association but in the end the job was not what she anticipated and wanted more. Dogs SA Council did try consultation with her however her resignation remained and she finished up on 11 August. Cheryl Currie will be managing the affairs of the association with the assistance of Council and Ann Farndell has agreed to work part time with us to assist her.

Currently the major project of Council is getting the proposed draft constitution past the members so we can move forward. The draft has been out for a second consultation with the members and will now need to go to a Special General Meeting to have it ratified if the members so wish. The draft will require a 75% vote in favour to pass so I do trust that all members have read the draft and asked questions if need be. The draft is very different to what we are used to as it brings us more toward current day convention in that much of the prescriptive elements in the constitution will now be written into the bylaws of the association. The office is currently investigating the option of both face to face and electronic attendance and voting at the SGM. Watch this space.

Work has also commenced on the updating of the canteen frontage which for many years has looked old and tired and would most likely not meet current health regulations. The first change members will see is the removal of the old roller door and being replaced with a full length roller door to the floor. Apart from the visual effect this will also give greater security for the counter front which is also planned to be replaced. No need to say but Margaret is feeling very excited. Adelaide Royal Show is up and running with the Dog Section moving into their new area in the brand new Basketball stadium. As there is a good entry for the show this year in many of the dog disciplines just be a little patient as we will all be getting used to the new surroundings and I am sure the committee will be happy to take back constructive feedback.

Remember September brings the end of winter and the beginning of spring and hopefully some warmer weather. However, with the warmer weather comes both the snakes and wasps. At home and when out be very careful as the weather warms and when at an event be careful with food and bait as that is what attracts the wasps.

As always, I am available to members to have a chat with and to discuss any issues they may have, or alternatively happy to attend club or committee meetings if there is a club issue to discuss, I do like to be pre-warned of the matters to be raised so I can research them and hopefully give a detailed answer at the time.

2023 THEORY & PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONS FOR CONFORMATION TRAINEE/ASPIRANT JUDGES

Application forms to apply for the Theory Exam to be held on Saturday 11th November 2023, is included in the Dogs SA September magazine and available on the Dogs SA website.

Applications will close on Friday 20th October 2023. Alternative dates for either Theory or Practical Examinations will only be considered for work or health related matters and all requests must be accompanied by a certificate from the employer or health practitioner. If you have a health-related condition that prevents you from completing the Theory exam in the traditional manner, this will be taken into consideration on submission of your health practitioner’s certificate.

Practical Examinations are schedule for Saturday 9th December 2023 during the day but allowing for the Examinations to be moved to Saturday evening in the case of Hot Weather Policy activating.

MBIS CH Lornell Grand Design “Piper”

At 22 months old with minimal outings this year, Piper recently won Runner Up Best In Group under Mrs Dianne Jovanovic then in the afternoon Best In Group and on to BEST IN SHOW under Judge Mrs Patrice Johansen at the Alice Springs Kennel & Dog Sports Club Championship Shows in July. This is the second year in a row that she has won Best in Show at these clusters. I would like to thank the club’s hard-working members, the Judges and especially Jo Grundy for handling Piper so beautifully.

Hot Weather

10. The following Exhibitions must be postponed or cancelled, or the commencement time amended to not before 7.00pm when the forecast temperature at 10.00a.m from the bom.gov.au site two days prior for (02/23)

(a) Conformation Exhibitions, is 35 degrees Celsius or higher; (02/23)

(b) Obedience, Agility, Earthdog, Lure Coursing Trials and Dances with Dogs Competitions, is 34 degrees Celsius or higher; and (07/21)

(c) Herding Trials, Tests and training and Scent Work, is 30 degrees Celsius or higher. (01/22)

(d) Tracking Trials, is 32 degrees Celsius or higher (01/16)

(e) Sled Sport – Sled Racing 15 degrees Celsius or higher, Backpacking/ Hiking 25 degrees Celsius or higher Weight Pull 20 degrees Celsius or higher. (06/17)

(f) Retrieving, Field and RATG is 32 degrees Celsius or higher unless there is ample swimming on the property. (01/19)

This temperature and timeline will be final for the decision to postpone or cancel or amend the commencement time of an Exhibition. (02/23)

11. For multiple Exhibitions scheduled for a weekend, only those Exhibitions where either forecast or actual conditions invoke the provisions of these rules, may be postponed or cancelled or the commencement time amended. (02/23)

12. It is the responsibility of an exhibitor to check two days prior to the Exhibition that the bom.gov.au forecast temperature for the day, at the locality where the exhibition is to be held, is in accordance with these rules. (02/23)

Other Extreme Weather Invoking Safety Concerns

13. An Exhibition may be postponed, in accordance with 6. Above, or cancelled when either the forecast or actual weather is such that they present a threat to the wellbeing or safety of competitors or their dogs.

14. All schedules must state that where an Exhibition is cancelled in accordance with the Extreme Weather and Safety Rules, no entry fees will be refunded.

15. The Affiliate Member must notify SACA Office and officials of their decision to cancel or amend the start time of an exhibition immediately. (02/23)

(a) The decision must be made available to exhibitors within four hours by every possible means of communication – i.e. uploading the information onto the Dogs SA website, electronic media, verbal telephone communication etc. (02/23)

(b) Provision for the running of 2 night exhibitions consecutively can be made, specifying any changes to the judging format and the use of a reserve judge should entry numbers require. (02/23)

16. Where the Affiliate Member has cancelled an Exhibition, they must submit a copy of the catalogue to the Executive Officer within 14 days of the cancellation. (01/22)

17. All levies from entries, fees, and ground hire fees where applicable will be paid to the SACA.

18. All contracted Judges, Stewards and SACA Representative fees must be paid on request.

19. Exception to these rules is where an Exhibition has been scheduled to be held in an air-conditioned venue or where the Exhibition is scheduled to start not before 7.00pm (02/23) or

Dogs SA Child Safe Code of Conduct Policy

Caring for children and young people brings additional responsibilities for employees and volunteers of our organisation. All employees and volunteers of our organisation are responsible for promoting and protecting the safety and wellbeing of children and young people by:

• always sticking to the Dogs SA child safe policy and taking all reasonable steps to ensure the safety and protection of children and young people

• treating everyone (this includes staff, volunteers, students, children, young people and parents) including those of different race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes and religious beliefs with respect and honesty and ensure equity is upheld

• being a positive role model to children and young people in all conduct with them

• setting clear boundaries about appropriate behaviour between yourself and the children and young people in Dogs SA – boundaries help everyone to understand their roles

• listening and responding appropriately to the views and concerns of children and young people

• being always mindful about bullying behaviours and responding promptly and appropriately

• ensuring another adult is always present or in sight when conducting one to one coaching, instruction, or other activity

• being alert to children and young people who have been harmed, or may be at risk of harm and reporting this quickly to the Child Abuse Report Line (13 14 78)

• responding quickly, fairly, and transparently to any complaints made by a child, young person, or their parent/ guardian • encouraging children and young people to ‘have a say’ on issues that are important to them.

Employees and volunteers must not:

• engage in rough physical games

• develop any ‘special’ relationships with children and young people that could be seen as favouritism such as the offering of gifts or special treatment

• do things of a personal nature that a child or young person can do for themselves, such as toileting or changing clothes

• discriminate against any child or young person because of age, gender, cultural background, religion, vulnerability, or sexuality.

Reporting a Breach of the Code of Conduct

Any reports of breach of the Code of Conduct should be made to the Executive Officer, Dogs SA.

Consequences of Breaching the Code of Conduct

Any breaches of this Code of Conduct will be investigated promptly by the Executive Officer and further investigation may be undertaken by the Investigations Committee which could lead to Disciplinary action. Complainants will be informed of the outcome as soon as possible.

C. CODE OF CONDUCT FOR EXHIBITORS

Dogs SA Exhibitors Code of Conduct (01/20)

1. By entering an Exhibition, all exhibitors acknowledge that they will do their utmost to comply with this Code of Conduct.

2. Exhibitors shall at all times and in all communications, including electronic media;

(a) Be familiar with and commit to abide by ANKC Ltd and Member Body rules and regulations, and the rules covering the Exhibition both in word and in spirit.

(b) Consider the health and welfare of their dog(s) to be of prime importance.

(c) Consider the health and welfare of other peoples' dogs as if they were their own and not commit or allow their dog(s) to commit any act that may put other people or their dogs at risk.

(d) Commit to fair play, sportsmanship, honesty and integrity within a competitive spirit and display good grace whether successful or otherwise.

(e) Commit to being civil and courteous at all times to other exhibitors, Judges, the Exhibition management, stewards and other officials.

(f) Commit to having control over their dogs at all times.

(g) Be respectful of decisions taken by judges and the Exhibition Manager and refrain from open displays of dissent.

(h) Respect constructive criticism of the performance or behaviour of themselves or their dogs.

(i) Be respectful and constructive should they feel the need to comment on aspects of the running of an Exhibition, decisions made by Judges, or the performance or behaviour of another exhibitor or their dog.

(j) Be respectful and constructive should they feel the need to comment on a dog entered in the Exhibition by another exhibitor.

(k) Do nothing to adversely affect the impartiality of the Exhibition management or judges at the Exhibition.

(l) Take responsibility for the actions and behaviour of their dog(s), family members or guests whom they invite into the precincts of the Exhibition.

(m) Be welcoming and encouraging towards newcomers to the sport and assist them in understanding both the letter of and the spirit of the rules and the code of conduct for exhibitors.

(n) Ensure that they have trained their dog(s) to a standard that will give them every chance to compete safely and successfully.

3. The use of threatening, abusive or aggressive language or behaviour towards any other person attending an Exhibition, including but not limited to, judges, exhibition officials, other exhibitors or visitors will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

4. Any competitor who witnesses a breach of this Code of Conduct is encouraged to report the matter to the SACA Representative at the earliest possible time. (01/20)
