President’s Report

Dogs SA again cleaned up at the Dog News Australia Top Dog Awards which were held in Sydney in March. We we awarded 3 of the 4 awards being Australia’s favourite Steward – Mari Lowden, Australia’s favourite Judge –Joy Lim and Australia’s Favorite Show for the 4th consecutive year – Dogs SA ADVANCE Winter International. Then to top it off, a Dogs SA exhibitor won the top dog award with German Shorthaired Pointer Am Ch Sup Ch

By Heiderst Knls, S Rattle, T Sproule, M Reichmuth and handled by Liat O’Malley. Just goes to show what a small state can do. Now for the 2024 awards lets go for the clean sweep and pick up Australia’s Favorite Royal as well.

There have been a number of concerns raised about the condition of the grounds in recent months. These issues are being addressed with the water pump now replaced so an improvement in the grass will become noticeable very quickly. The heat and dry weather has also stressed a number of trees on the grounds. This has also been addressed and an Arborist has been engaged to assess the trees and take the appropriate action to remediate any issues identified. The other issue is the Calthrop which is coming up around the grounds. Although we are poisoning the weed as we see it, if you are down at DRP and see it, dig it out and place in the bin. Do not simply throw on the ground as it will reseed and the issue will continue.

European Wasps are in plague proportions in and around Adelaide at the moment and DRP is no exception. The traps are designed to attract and then trap the wasps, problem is they tend to attract more than they trap. What can we do to reduce the numbers at DRP. Firstly we are baiting during the week away from the main areas behind the herding area. We are removing all baits prior to the weekend when dogs are present. Take a can of fly spray to the shows to spray the wasps if you see them but, most of all reduce the amount of bait and do not throw it on the ground. Even if you pick it up the Wasps can still smell where it landed and will be attracted to it. Cover any food or drink as again this attracts them. We do not believe the nests are on DRP as we have extensively looked for them and Wasps are known to travel Kms for a good food source.

As we hopefully start to say goodbye to the hot summer weather please all go out and enjoy yourselves with your dogs. Easter is again with us so I wish all those competing in what ever all the best particularly those going to Sydney. Lets show them what SA dogs can do.

SUMMARY OF THE DOGS AUSTRALIA SPECIAL BOARD MEETING HELD VIA ZOOM VIDEO CONFERENCING ON 10 FEBRUARY 2024

At the February 2024 Dogs Australia Special Board meeting, Directors resolved/considered the following:

1. * Dogs Australia Rules for the Conduct of SprintDog™

It was RESOLVED that Dogs Australia approve the Rules for the Conduct of SprintDog™ Trials and the Dogs Australia SprintDog Qualifying Certificate to be effective from 1 July 2024.

2. * Dogs Australia Rules for the Conduct of Obedience Trials

It was RESOLVED to rescind the October 2023 Board meeting decision to amend the Glossary in the Rules for the Conduct of Obedience Trials as follows:

Page 3 Fouling

Present Rule:

A dog which fouls at any time while it is under the control of the Judge must be disqualified

Change to:

A dog which fouls at any time while it is under the control of the Judge must be disqualified and removed from the ring immediately.

Page 4 Disqualification

Present rule:

No points awarded. The dog is disqualified from all Trial Competition on the day and the Judge must provide a written report to the Member Body within 14 days – the only exception being in the instances where the disqualification was incurred for continual barking, a correction penalty, fouling the ring or for handlers bringing training aids into the ring.

Change to:

No points awarded. The dog is disqualified from all Trial Competition on the day and the Judge must provide a written report to the Member Body within 14 days. It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 5, Conformation Show Clauses 9.5.5 and 9.5.6 be amended to read.

9.5.5 At all shows with few entries the organisers are permitted to have different groups judged together in the ring of honour for “Best in

Group” competitions; however, this does not apply to World and Section Shows.

9.5.6 In accordance with the above provision, at FCI/CACIB Shows conducted in Australia the following combined groups may be utilised:

a. Group 1 Sheepdogs and Cattle- Dogs (except Swiss Cattle Dogs)

b. Group 2 Pinschers and Schnauzers – Molossoid Breeds - Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs

c. Group 3 Terrier Group

d. Combined Group 4 Dachshunds Group 6 Scenthounds and related breeds Group 10 Sighthounds

e. Group 5 Spitz and Primitive Types

f. Combined Group 7 Pointing dogs Group 8 Retrievers – Flushing dogs – Water dogs

g. Group 9 Companion and Toy dogs

Rules for the conduct of Dances with Dogs Competitions & Rules for the conduct of Trick Dog Tests – CORRECTIONS

The National Dances with Dogs/Trick Dog Committee Chairperson, Barbara Murfet has confirmed the committee has identified a number of typographical and consequential errors in the Rules for the conduct of Dances with Dogs Competitions & Rules for the conduct of Trick Dog Tests.

Rules for the conduct of Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs (RATG) – CORRECTION

The National Retrieving & Field Trial Committee Chairperson, Ron Jackson has confirmed the committee has identified an error in the RATG rules which occurred at the last rule review with the rules being effective from 1 January 2024. The error occurred in Rule 2.4 pertaining to the eligibility to enter the Open Stake of RATG. Refer below.

Currently reads:

2.4. To be eligible to compete in an Open Retrieving Ability Test, a dog must not have gained any of the following Titles as defined in the Rules for the Conduct of Retrieving Trials for Gundogs (effective 1 Jan 2010) – RRD, AARD, RT CH, Nat RT CH, Grand RT CH.

The committee has agreed the rule should read as follows as the correct interpretation.

2.4 To be eligible to compete in an Open Retrieving Ability Test a dog must have gained its Novice Retrieving Ability Test (NRA) title or gained any one of the following titles as defined in the Rules for the Conduct of Retrieving Trials for Gundogs – Qualified Novice Dog (QND) or Novice Retrieving Dog (NRD).

Dogs are ineligible to compete in an Open Retrieving Ability Test if they have have gained any of the following Titles as defined in the Rules for the Conduct of Retrieving Trials for Gundogs: QRD, RRD, AARD, RT CH, Nat RT CH, Grand RT CH or been awarded a CM (Certificate of Merit) or DM (Diploma of Merit)

Rules & Guidelines for the conduct of Track & Search Dog Trials – CORRECTION

The National Obedience & Tracking Committee Chairperson, Raelee Hedger has confirmed the committee has identified an error in the Rules & Guidelines for the conduct of Track & Search Dog Trials which were effective from 1 January 2024.

The error occurred in dot point (g) under Safety where the word “may” should read “must” to be consistent with paragraph 2 under Safety.

Currently reads:

SAFETY

The safety of competitors, tracklayers, officials, other persons, and dogs at a trial is of paramount concern. As track and search tests are conducted in urban environments where there are likely to be hazards including moving vehicles and uneven surfaces all reasonable steps to protect safety must be taken.

A competitor who does not comply with safety requirements must be disqualified. Before commencing judging a test the judge must check that the dog and handler have on the necessary equipment. A judge may abort or suspend a track at any time if they consider it necessary to do so for safety.

(g) The Judge may disqualify any Handler who does not comply with safety requirements.

Local Irish Wolfhounds at Crufts

Irish Wolfhound Club of SA President Chris Michelmore and his wife Jodie had the opportunity to attend Crufts this year and watch their home bred Irish Wolfhounds compete. An entry of 160 Irish Wolfhounds saw Creena Atticus Finch at Dukesarum place 2nd in Limit Dog and Creena Harper at Dukesarum place 1st in Limit Bitch. The dogs were sent to Dukesarum Kennels and the male lives with international singing star Sting (Police) and the bitch lives on the same property with her handler. Great to see South Australian bred dogs shown at Crufts with super results.

FUTHERMORE, due to confusion sometimes arising over the correct calculation of a dog’s age into breed classes where the date of birth does not occur in the relevant month, the anniversary date is to be taken as the last date of that month, e.g. dogs born on the 31st January will be eligible to enter the Baby Puppy class on the 30th April

Procedure for reserving of sites for Commercial marquees

When it is intended to book and erect a commercial marquee an application must be lodged with the Dogs SA office no less than 10 working days prior to the event.

The booking must be made on the application form (available on the Dogs SA website or office) and the non-refundable prescribed fee of $50.00 must be paid at this time.

The booking will not be accepted without a complete form and payment.

Commercial marquees are erected 2 days prior to avoid conflict with members setting up their own gazebo. If a commercial marquee is not erected 2 days prior, the reservation is forfeited, and other members may set up within that site.

Only commercial marquees are to be erected on booked sites. No personal gazebos.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS

Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)

As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:

1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.

2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)

3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.

4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.

5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)

(a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20)

(b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20)

(c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (11/21)

(d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20)

(e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20)

6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.

7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)

8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.

9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)

10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.

11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)

FCI Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion Title (FCI A20 Ch.)

Many FCI countries around the world award ‘Regional Titles’, for example in the FCI Americas Section there are regional titles such as Pan American Champion and Latin America Champion. The regional Australian FCI title is the Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion, in the short form FCI A20 Champion (FCI A20 Ch.), which came into effect 17th June 2019.

Due to the structure of the ANKC and the way individual States Bodies manage and run their own affairs, dispensation is given to Australian exhibitors to qualify for FCI A20 Section titles, in that A20 CAC’s won in different countries be replaced with individual States counting as different countries.

Requirements to attain Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion Titles in Australia:

To obtain the title of Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion: A dog/ bitch who is already an Australian Champion or Champion of an FCI member country, must win EIGHT A20CS CAC’s dog/ bitch at any FCI A20 Championship Show (A20CS) organised by any of the ANKC State bodies or approved Clubs within the State. At least TWO of the Eight A20CS CAC must be won in different States of Australia.

Breed Level

To obtain the title of Asia, Africa & Oceania Supreme Champion: A dog/bitch who is already an Australian Champion or Champion of an FCI member country, must win TWELVE A20CS CAC’s dog/bitch at any FCI A20 Championship Show (A20CS) organised by any of the ANKC State bodies or approved Clubs within the State PLUS win a BIS1 (Best in Show 1) at an A20CS. At least THREE of the twelve A20CS CAC must be won in different States of Australia.

Awarding of A20CS CAC’s

The A20CS CAC’s are awarded to the Best Dog & Best Bitch OR Dog CAC & Bitch CAC at a Championship Show. The Show does not have to be a CACIB/ International Show and the awarding of the A20CS CAC’s follow the ANKC Rules with the regards to the awarding of the Best Dog & Best Bitch OR Dog CAC & Bitch CAC.

The Winter International Committee is delighted to have on their 2024 judging panel several senior members of the Africa, Asia and Oceania Section hierarchy including section Vice President Mr Gopi Krishnan, who will judge Best in Show at the 2024 A2O Championship Show.

Winter International CACIB Show INFORMATION TO EXHIBITORS

Order of Judging

1. The order of judging is as follows

a. DOGS

1) Baby Puppy Dogs - For dogs aged three months and under six months (not eligible for CACIB)

2) Minor Puppy Dogs - For dogs aged six months and under nine months. (not eligible for CACIB)

3) Puppy - For dogs aged six months and under twelve months (not eligible for CACIB)

4) Junior - For dogs aged nine months and under eighteen months (not eligible for CACIB)

5) Intermediate - For dogs aged eighteen months and under thirty-six months (a CACIB may be awarded)

6) Open - For dogs 15 months and over that are not Champions (a CACIB may be awarded)

7) Champion - To enter a dog in Champion Class, the title must have been confirmed by the issue of a Registered Pedigree Certificate with the title added by the day of the official closing date of entries; a Champion that has not attained 15 months of age may not be awarded a CACIB

8) Veteran - For dogs aged 8 years or older (not eligible for CACIB)

b. Challenge/CACIB

1) All class winners from CLASSES .2 - 21 are eligible for the ANKC Challenge and are to enter the ring

2) The judge selects the Challenge winner from those dogs in the ring. Should the Challenge winner be eligible for the CACIB (Intermediate, Open, Champion over 15 months and awarded excellent then they will automatically be awarded the CACIB.

3) The second placed dog from the class of the Challenge winner then enters the ring.

4) The judge selects the Reserve Challenge winner. Should the reserve challenge winner be eligible for a CACIB then if the Challenge winner was not eligible it will be awarded the CACIB.

5) Should neither the Challenge or Reserve Challenge winners be eligible for the CACIB then if any of the class winners were eligible they then remain in the ring for the judge to award the CACIB from those eligible only.

c. Bitches – Repeat steps 1a and 1 b.

d. Best of Breed

1) Best of Breed judging is conducted in the normal manner for the Alternate judging procedure which is Best and R/U Best of Breed followed by only Baby Puppy and Puppy Classes. Best in Group and Best in Show judging is judged in accordance with the current regulations for the Alternate method. That being Best in Group 4, 3, 2, 1, followed by Baby Puppy and Puppy. Similarly, Best in Show is judged 2, 1, followed by Baby Puppy and Puppy

2024 Winter International Judge Resumes

1: Mr Zaur Agabeyli (Azerbaijan)

Together with his wife, Zauer, Agabeyli started breeding West Highland White and Cairn Terriers and had some success with these breeds. Since 1999 he has bred Dobermanns under his own kennel name “v. Feuer Stamm” and imported several successful dogs in Azerbaijan. For the last few years Mr Agabeyli has bred German Shepherds and has in his kennel both working and show line dogs. Mr Agabeyli has been judging since 2006 and is an FCI All Breeds Judge.

2: MrMel Saranchuk (Canada)

Mel and his wife Lynda have been showing and breeding since 1974 under their Hysteppin Kennels and whilst English Setters remain their primary passion, they have also owned and exhibited Labradors, GSPs, Siberian Huskies, Irish Wolfhounds and Standard Poodles. He has judged in all over Canada and overseas in Argentina, Bermuda, China, Colombia, New Zealand, USA, and Australia.

3: Mrs Lynda Saranchuk (Canada)

Lynda and her husband Mel have been showing and breeding since 1974 under their Hysteppin Kennels and whilst English Setters remain their primary passion, they have also owned and exhibited Labradors, GSPs, Siberian Huskies, Irish Wolfhounds and Standard Poodles. She has judged in all over Canada and overseas in Argentina, Bermuda, China, Colombia, New Zealand, USA, and Australia.

4: Mr. Preetham Thukaram (India)

Preetham Thukaram started showing dogs at a very young age as a Junior handler with Great Danes. Later on, with his father, he started exhibiting and breeding Whippets, Labradors and German Shepherds. He has exhibited and/or bred several other breeds including Dobermans, Pugs, Fox Terriers (Smooth), Afghan Hound. An All-Breeds Judge, he has judged in all parts of India and overseas in China, New Zealand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Japan and different states of Australia.

5: Mrs Sumiko Ikeda (Japan)

Mrs. Ikeda, an All Breeds and FCI All Breeds Judge, from Japan, was raised in Yokohama, where her family bred and raised American Cocker Spaniels. She began showing American Cocker Spaniels and Miniature Schnauzers in 1979 and has bred many Champion American Cocker Spaniels, English Setters, Lakeland Terriers and Miniature Schnauzers. Mrs. Ikeda has officiated at shows throughout Japan, USA, Asia and Australia.

6: Mr Mitsunori Terada (Japan)

Mr Terada comes from a dog family and was raised with Dobermann, Boxer, Pointer, Boston Terrier, Cairn Terrier and many other breeds. Around 1969 his father began breeding British Bulldogs and he went to Shows with the Bulldogs and his mother’s Shih Tzus. A Handler of many breeds, he focused on the breeding of Bulldog, Shih Tzu, French Bulldog, and bred many champions. Following his retirement as a handler, Mr Terada focused on judging and has enjoyed many appointments around the world.

7: MrTakio Kamei (Japan)

Since he was born into a family which bred and showed Akita dogs, he became naturally interested in dog shows. Back then in Japan, the TV series “Lassie” was extremely popular attracting him to Collies. The joy and excitement of having his own Collie as a member of the family still stays with me. Later on, he saw Shelties at a show and literally fell in love with them and has been for more than 30 years. In 1980, he owned his first Sheltie (sable female) and in 1982, bred his first Shelties. In 2006, he earned his first judging license for the Herding group and since then has been active as both judge and breeder, qualifying for more breeds.

8: Mr Gopi Krishnan (Malaysia)

Gopi Krishnan studied for 9 years in the UK and this gave him the opportunity to attend dog shows every weekend. His Hacienda Kennels have owned, coowned, campaigned (owner exhibited) and titled 150+ Champions in Std. Smooth, Std. Longhaired & Min. Longhaired Dachshunds, English Setter and English Cocker Spaniels, with many homebred. Gopi joined the MKA judges training scheme in the 1990’s and has judged all over the world at many of the top shows.

9: Mr Al Ferruggiaro (USA)

Mr Ferruggiaro’s interest in purebred dogs began as a teenager by handling his black Miniature Poodle, in Junior Showmanship. His interest continued into adulthood with breeding and exhibiting dozens of AKC champion Lakeland and Norwich Terriers. The AKC has approved Al to judge all 32 Terrier breeds as well as an additional 80+ breeds. He judges Terriers regularly throughout the US. Additionally, he has judged Terriers in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, and New Zealand.

10:Mr Adrian Landarte (Uruguay)

Adrian Landarte started in the world of dog shows at age of 17, when he bought his first Afghan Hound. From that moment he got involved more and more in this hobby as breeder, exhibitor, judge, organizer, and director. With Jorge Nallem they founded “El Retorno” kennel having great success breeding Irish Setters, Beagles, Schnauzers, Dachshund, Fox Terriers, Whippet, Greyhound and Cimarron Uruguayo. Adrian is an all-breed judge and began his career as an Irish Setter judge in 1987. He had the pleasure of judging in more than 50 countries of all continents.

11: Mr Jorge Nallem (Uruguay)

Owner of “El Retorno” Kennel, Jorge Nallem breeds Standard Schnauzer, Wire and Smooth Fox Terriers, Whippet, Beagle, Boxer, Short hair Dachshunds, Greyhound and Cimarron Uruguayo. He became a Fox Terrier judge in 1987, and an All Breeds FCI judge in 1996. Specialist judge on Old English Sheepdog, Boxer, Doberman, Schnauzers, Fox Terriers, Basset Hound, Irish Setters, Poodles, Shih-tzu and Afghan Hound. Jorge has extensive international experience, judging in many countries around the world.
