President’s Report With the hot weather now upon us it is a timely reminder to ensure all of your animals are well watered and shaded. With the weather also comes the usual rhetoric around activities in the summer months. Dogs SA council has always tried not to involve itself in the running of events and has left it up to the management of the affiliates concerned. There have been many Face Book posts about cancelling all events over the summer months or moving them all to night events. These affiliates have been doing a very good job at managing their events with very few cancellations. Dogs SA rules allow a club to postpone an event for up to 48 hours notice without approval and any time longer then it must be approved by the Executive Officer. Affiliates also have the option of moving forward if approved in the schedule. Council will be reviewing the Hot Weather Policy again after summer and will take into account the member’s suggestions and also the changes in the way we enter dogs with the introduction of online entries and the 7 day weather forecast being available. During January there was a lot of discontent in relation to the condition of the grounds. The Executive Officer and I have been working with the contractor to improve the condition of the grounds. It must also be remembered that we have had an extremely wet beginning to summer which has allowed the grass to grow at a much fast rate. The grounds contractor has tried to keep the grass down to reduce the sponginess which has meant they have had to scour the surface at times. This has also led to excessive amounts of grass clippings which the contractor has not been clearing, again a matter of discussion with them. Council elections for the Vice President and 4 Councillors will close on 07 February 2024 so I trust you have all considered your options and voted. If you do not vote, do not complain about who gets elected. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be conducted later in March this year as compared to normal. This is still in accordance with our constitution and the Incorporated Association Regulations, but it gives the Auditor more time to prepare the Audited Accounts. An agenda item at the AGM will be the acceptance of the revised Constitution. There was considerable consultation with the members in relation to the development of the new constitution which has been available on the Dogs SA website for members to view since August 2023. Should you require a copy please contact the office who will either email it to you or if necessary, print and post a hard copy to you. There will be no option to amend the proposal on the night and any changes will need to be made after the meeting with a Special General Meeting to be convened for the adoption of the constitution and amendments to be included as a special resolution. Finally, try to stay cool and keep your dogs safe and well watered. As always if any member wishes to discuss anything please feel free to call or arrange a time to meet. COUNCIL ADMINISTRATION REPORT 2023 The Dogs Australia Conference was held in October 2023 in Melbourne and was attended by President Brian Parker and Executive Officer Cheryl Currie. Council approved an upgrade of the Canteen with kitchen renovations including new cupboards, drawers, front counter, oven and roller door across the front with a ceiling fan installed in the BBQ area. The Hospitality centre including the bar returned a profit of $7,645 and in addition, there was $18,810 paid to Clubs in commission for working in the Canteen and BBQ. Council and Members are extremely grateful to our volunteer Canteen Manager, Margaret Bush for her tireless efforts and dedication in providing such a great service with constant surveillance to provide Members with choice and competitive pricing. Thank you. The Investigative Committee dealt with numerous complaints or breaches which resulted in 31 cases going to a hearing. Late in 2023 saw the return of previous Member of the Investigative Committee, Sue Foster and new panel Members, Lynne Stapylton & Lance Heilmann. They will join the current experienced team. Dogs SA greatly appreciates their efforts in often trying circumstances. Council extends a sincere thank you to the Conformation Judge’s Training Panel. The Group leaders deliver lectures throughout the year via zoom and hold Practical Handling days. The success of the program is reliant on the commitment of the volunteers which undertake the application of the process. The Theory exams were held in November with 13 candidates and 10 achieving pass results which is a pass rate equalling 77%. The Practical exams were held in January after the original scheduled date was postponed due to weather. There were 12 candidates with 10 achieving a pass rate with equates to a pass rate of 83%. The training scheme would not be achievable without the many volunteers to run the program, including the Examiners and the Members who provide dogs and time which is greatly appreciated. Council extends a sincere thank you to the Trial Advisory Committees for their extensive contribution in supporting the many Trial activities. Not only do they facilitate the training of judges and delivery of a mentorship program for training, there are many other areas that the volunteers facilitate throughout the year such as State and National Championships and Dogs Australia rule reviews. We can also report there are three brand new Trial Judges for Trials in 2023, with many of the existing judges doing further exams and training and therefore increasing their repertoire in a discipline. Dogs SA Committees held multiple events for Conformation during the year including another successful ADVANCE Winter International which was voted as the Best Show in Australia for another year. The event draws an excellent entry from every State in Australia with rave reviews (and the weather was kind this year). Congratulations to the committee of this event for their committed approach to delivering a world class event. The annual competition of DOTY POTY NOTY was held in December with a slight change to the format with only one judge being a “secret”. The entry reflected this was a popular decision. The prizes were fabulous and the event was another success being well run and presented. Good job committee! Dogs SA Junior Handler Committee conducted the State Final with a very small committee and continue to deliver a memorable February 2024
and enjoyable experience for our youngest Members. In addition, the Committee held two weekends of shows as Fundraisers which were well supported and well managed as we have come to expect in their capable hands. There has been a slight increase in the number of registered Junior Handlers, and this is greatly attributed to the outstanding experiences that this committee provide to the younger generation. You are doing a wonderful job, Thank you. Dogs SA Office continues to implement new procedures to improve the efficiency and Member experience. Cheryl Currie has been engaged as Executive Officer after previously filling in for the position. Staff Members Mick Carter, Nova Mahajabin, Simon Squire (part-time) are still engaged, and Ann Farndell has returned in a part-time capacity. Staff will continue to deliver outstanding service on a daily basis. Membership cards can be viewed on the Dogs SA app or on the online services platform. We have also implemented that all Members will receive an email confirming their renewal has been paid. Membership cards are still available upon request. Effective from 1st January 2024, all new Prefix applicants will be required to do an open book exam. Show Title applications can now be found on Show Manager with a list of the dog wins at one of their events. In addition, the list of results from Easydogs can be found on their site. Eventually, Challenge certificates will be available upon request as the online applications will not require both. The Dogs SA Office has also altered the hours on Tuesday afternoon where it will close at 12.30pm. This will facilitate the time to schedule staff meetings and staff training. Staff can be identified in their uniform with black polo shirts embroidered with the Dogs SA logo. Dogs SA staff in 2024 will continue to strive to provide the best service in Australia.

OBEDIENCE ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2023
2023 has been a good year for the OAC with strong involvement and continued to support the sport. Again there have been new faces in the earlier classes and I look froward to their ongoing participation and involvement in the sports of Obedience and Rally. I thank very sincerely the OAC members: Julie Brown; Peter Dynan; Annette Railz and Sue Laidler. Julie’s support in managing our social sites (Facebook and Web) is a major role. Brian Fielder and Peter Dynan have ben tireless in their support for our dog sports at Council. I thank Council and the staff of DogsSA for ongoing support. Annette has been a welcome contributor being able to bring an active voice for trial managing and administrations. Annette and Lyn Fielden’s work on delivering another successful State Championship, our major event of the year. Peter has updated the Steward’s Guide with Wendy Adams support, the guide be released in early 2024. Lyn continues to do the unenviable task of Registrar with her usual enthusiasm. Thanks also to the SAODC for their support of the State Championships. This year we have been active in the following areas: ET rules review; support for new club’s as potential future members and Judges training. The judges training program this year has provided two additional Open Class judges to the panel – congratulations David Opperman and Karen Moralee. Ruth Vizzer has now commenced training for Open as has Julie Lyon as a Rally judge. I thank all of our Club’s and their committees and volunteers, particularly those that offer obedience and rally trials, those that keep our sport active through their competing, our judges who ensure that competition is maintained and the staff of Dogs SA for their support and assistance. I will shortly take the opportunity to give very special thanks to two of our outstanding contributors to our sport. Neil McDonald Chair
AGILITY ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2023
Thank you again to everyone for coming tonight to reflect on the year, determine the AAC members for 2024, and to celebrate the achievements of the agility community this year. I’ve been tasked with giving the Chairperson’s report this year, so this will be a short overview of this year’s events. Following on from last year’s introduction of the SA Agility Title Sashes, clubs were provided with sashes to celebrate titles on the day they were achieved. This has proved very popular, and we have enjoyed celebrating with handlers as they have reached new stages of competition with their dogs. The Agility National Championships were held in May, and there was a small but very competitive contingent of SA handlers that travelled over. The SA group was very successful, coming in second place in the Teams event, and scoring some lovely passes, including some National Page 8
Champion placings. Congratulations to all who attended, and we hope SA people are looking forward to the 2024 event in NSW too. Our State Championships in June were also very successful, with over 1200 entries, and competitors from NSW, ACT, VIC travelling over. Thanks to the efforts of the Committee and the Fundraising subcommittee, this event was the first State Champs in many years to make a profit too. To use the money raised to benefit the agility community, we have been investigating and budgeting for a second full curtain set of timing gear. This should be ready for purchase by next year’s committee. In some exciting news, we have received one application for an aspiring judge. We encourage any others who are interested to apply, as it would be great to have a group learning and supporting each other along the way! Looking ahead to 2024, we would like to remind everyone of Rules Review process. Over the next two years, the rules for Agility, Jumping and Games, Nationals Team events, and Guidelines for Judges will be examined, and Dogs Australia is calling for consultation from the agility communities in each state. Rule proposals can be emailed to the AAC secretary at secretary@agilitysa.au and submissions are open until January 31, 2024. Meetings will be held next year where members can vote on the proposals that SA will put forward to the National Committee. Finally, we would like to thank Keith Millington for his service as a judge, both in SA and interstate. I believe he has been judging in SA for nearly 50 years in several disciplines, which is an incredible achievement! We were able to join together with the OAC and Blue Lake Obedience Club to help celebrate his service alongside Kathy as well, and wish him the best of luck for his retirement. We wish all competitors who are trialling the best of luck at Southern Districts this Saturday, and also extend our well wishes to the incoming committee. Chloe Dunlop Chair Dogs SA Agility Advisory Committee
DANCES WITH DOGS & TRICKS ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2023 This has been a very busy year with the Rules Review of both DWD and Tricks, plus conducting the 10th Anniversary and State Championship incorporating double DWD Competitions and triple Trick Dog Tests, followed by a “Transitioning Tricks to DWD” Workshop, conducted by State Champ Judges Niccola Hardaker (ACT) and Rochelle Manderson (Vic). DWD Competitions During the year, Competitions were held by the following: The DWD Club of SA, Gawler Dog Training Club, the Royal Show and the Advisory Committee; attracting an average of around 23 entrants per competition. The State Championships’ two Competitions attracted record entries of 47 and 44 respectively, including many from interstate. Total entries for the year 209. For a challenging, minority sport such as DWD it is reassuring to see continued involvement and strong support.
Trick Dog Tests Total entries for this year were 648 over 22 Tests, with entries averaging around 30. 63 Entries were received for each of the three State Championship Tricks Tests. Numbers have settled to around 22 per Test as people who have gained their dogs’ titles have moved on to other sports. Trick Dog Tests were held by the DWD Club of SA, The Gawler Dog Training Club, Southern Districts, SA Obedience Dog Club, Southern Districts Dog Club and The Riverland Dog Club. This year saw a second person transition from Tricks to DWD. Judges: DWD The number of DWD Judges remains at 13, with one retiring. Irma Crews, whose enthusiasm for and contribution to the sport was greatly valued and appreciated and we hope she will join us at future Competitions to share her knowledge and passion with current and up-coming participants. It is pleasing to report one new Judge has joined our Panel. Tegan Whalan, who is a current DWD competitor and has a wealth of experience in a range of doggy disciplines. DWD Judges Training Both sessions this year focussed on the Rules Review and subsequent outcomes. Judges: Trick Dogs Currently there are five on the Panel with two Trainees booked to start next year. Trick Dog Judges Training The Judges two Training Sessions focussed on the Rules Review and subsequent outcomes. South Australia is indebted to Lynne Staplyton for her work in managing Trick Dogs Judges Training. Trick Sequencing It was agreed at the national Rules Review that the proposal to introduce a new sport, Trick Sequencing, be tested by each State and report back. SA’s “Come-N-Try Tricks Sequencing” conducted by Elaine Kennedy this month attracted interest: and responses from SA Judges who attended have been reported back to national. However, no interest has been shown for the other new proposal - Story-Telling. Training Regular training in both DWD and Tricks continue to be conducted by the DWD Club of SA and the Gawler Dog Training Club: with Tricks being taught at Para Districts Dog Club and Southern Districts Dog Club. Demonstrations of both Tricks and DWD by the DWD Club of SA at public venues continue to entertain, but so far have not attracted interest from new people to join. However, these events do play a part in raising Dogs SA’s public profile. This year has seen growing participation and support for our twin sports of DWD and Tricks and I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has played a part during that time, including members of Dogs SA council and office staff. In addition, I thank my fellow 2023 A/C members for their competent and valued input: Tegan Whalan, Carolyn Gregory and Shauna Ashewood. Their combined efforts together with Lynne Staplyton and Sharon Wood, ensured the A/C met all its obligations to DWD and Tricks in South Australia: February 2024
in particular the 10th DWD Anniversary and 2023 State DWD and Tricks Championships. As I will be stepping down from this Committee after 13 years, (10 as Chair) I wish to express my pleasure in working with so many like-minded people. I have enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship and am grateful for the support I have received over that time from a long list of DWD devotees. Their combined skills and knowledge enabled the Advisory Committee to continue to meet its obligations over the years. Casting my mind back, I recall being inspired by and working with everyone in the DWD fraternity. However, from my personal perspective, I must thank a few of the stand-out pioneers and current cohorts - Jenny McLoughlin, Carole Hussein, Rae Hedger, Sharon Wood, Kate Lloyd, Ilona Wright, Jean Milnes, Irma Crews, Andi Sutherland, Daniel McLoughlin, Jo Murrell, Maryka Spurling-Janes, Karin Marder, Elaine Kennedy, Alan Kennedy, Denise Adams, Lis Brady, Christine Hayes and in particular, Lynne Staplyton. I have had a great time serving on the DWD A/C and say, “Thanks for the memory”. And I will quote from one of ABBA’s songs, “ Thank you for the music, Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty, What would life be? Without a song or a dance what are we? So, I say thank you for the music, For giving it to me” Now I must say that I leave this Committee with one disappointment: and that is the fact that we are still not able to fairly access the Dogs SA’s Hall for DWD Competitions. This is a valuable central location which serves to encourage participation of members who live south of the city. The future I am confident that the momentum created over the year will continue to gain pace and meet challenges as they arise. Thanks to the input of fellow enthusiasts the future for DWD and Tricks in SA looks extremely bright. Margaret Bourn Chair DWD Advisory Committee
TRACKING ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2023

I would like to thank the Committee I worked with in 2023, Teresa Shanahan our Secretary, Ian Murrell, Christine Hayes. Thank you to Christine Hayes for her service as she is not renominating for 2024. Under the guidelines for Advisories, the Committee in 2024 will be four members in total. I would also like to thank the previous EO of Dogs SA, Ms Deb Lee and acting EO Ms Cheryl Currie and her staff for all the assistance provided to the Advisory in 2023. SCENTWORK ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2023
Welcome Everyone. Thank you for attending tonight’s SA Scent Work SGM. The Scent Work Advisory Committee (SWAC) consists of Sharon Gahan (Secretary), Kate Lloyd (Trainee Liaison), Angie Shepherd (Trial Manager), Jean Milnes (Event Coordinator) and myself (Narelle Medlicott) as Chair. I would sincerely like to thank each of them for all their hard work and dedication to the Scent Work Advisory and everything we have undertaken this year. I would also like thank the hard-working Dogs SA staff for their help and support with administration requirements of the Scent Work Advisory Committee. This year Scent Work in SA has increased rapidly, we can see why, it’s a great sport for people and dogs of all ages and abilities. It’s great to see so many newcomers and we look forward to seeing more people join our sport in the near future. Over the course of the year, we have held training sessions for our 10 Trainee judges including Theory sessions, Mentor sessions and Mock trials. We are pleased to say we have to date had 6 pass their Theory and Practical exams, bringing the total number of Licenced Judges in SA to 8. On behalf of Page 10
the Advisory, I would like to congratulate Helen Davis, Lynne Stapyton, Carmel Nottle, Julianne Henry, Nicole Elkins and Jean Milnes on passing their Scent Work Exams this year. The addition of these Judges has allowed us to hold many more trials here in SA, which from a competitor point of view can only be a great thing and gives us all many more options. We have another 4 from the existing training panel who have recently sat their theory exams and we hope in 2024 they will at some stage sit their practical examinations. To add to these existing 4, SWAC have also approved another 3 trainee Judges to the program. We are hoping to hold a couple of Mock Trials in the new year to give our trainee judges some experience and to assist in training stewards and, of course, to provide some practice for our competitors, we hope that you will support these mock trials and help in assisting our future Judges. The future of Scent Work in SA is looking exciting with the keen interest we have for people to become Judges and we wish all our trainee Judges the best with their training. From the period of October 2022 to now, SWAC have held two “Official” ANKC trials, both of which gained an excellent number of entries. The remainder of trials have been held by Para Districts Obedience Dog Club, Gawler Dog Training Club, The Gun Dog Club of SA and Southern Districts Kennel and Obedience Club. A total of 19 trials have been held, consisting of 7 Day trials and 11 Night Trials. The 2024 Scent Work Calendar is already looking promising for Scent Work trialists. The Advisory also undertook a couple of Demonstration days, these being at the Animal Expo in April and the Royal Show in September. Each of the demonstrations were extremely well received and we have been invited back to the Royal next year to show case Scent Work. A big thank you to Jean Milnes for organising and all those that took part in the demonstrations. In 2023, 35 members have gained Novice titles and 14 have gained Advanced titles, congratulations to all these competitors and their Dogs. The Scent Work Advisory Trial will be held in June 2024 and plans are already under way for a fantastic weekend of trials. Best wishes to you and your dogs for happy and successful trials in 2024. Narelle Medlicott, Chair, Dogs SA Scent Work Advisory Committee
RAFT ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2023
There were five weekends of Retrieving trials conducted by Dogs SA affiliated Clubs in South Australia in 2023. All five were held by the Retrieving and field Trials Club of SA Inc and a one-day trial attached to the June long weekend was held by the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of SA. The Gundog Club of SA also conducted a weekend of Double Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs with two Novice and two Open tests held each day. Again we thank the organising committees of these Clubs for their dedication to Gundog Retrieving in South Australia. A great deal of effort is required to organise and run a trial
and this is appreciated by the competitors who are able to compete with their dogs on some of the best properties in South Australia. Unfortunately, there were no new aspiring Novice judges in South Australia this year nor were there any existing judges upgrading their licences to judge at a higher level. This is a dangerous situation for the future of Gundog Retrieving in South Australia because new judges in all stakes are a must if the future of Gundog Retrieving is to be assured. Fortunately, Russell Whitechurch, recently arrived from Victoria where he was a Novice Retrieving Judge and has added to the ranks of judges in this state. With the gracious help of Greg Playdon and Russell Whitechurch we held a very well attended training seminar at the old Bowling Green at Dogs SA. Greg and Russell spoke at length about training in general, training drills with accompanying video and answered attendees’ questions. Later they provided a practical demonstration of some of the training drills. In November and December of 2022 the RAFT committee held 6 weeks of beginner training for new and interested Gundog owners. This type of activity is a must in attempting to encourage more competitors into Gundog Retrieving and I thank Jessie Hughes, Lynne Webster and Allan Putterill for their attendance at these training evenings. The South Australian State Retrieving Championship was held on the 26th and 27th August at the Loveday property of Barmera-Marook Field and Game and was judged by Diane McCann from Victoria. In a similar situation to last year, high Murray River water flows did not allow us to access much of the property but good planning by Trial Manager Jeff Patrick with help from Ray Ashenden enabled us to access some new areas which provided ample scope for the Judge to set 6 testing runs. The level of entries was excellent at 31 and this was, in part, because of the competitors were travelling on to Western Australia for their State Championship and the National Retrieving Trial later in September. The Winner of the South Australian Championship was Russell Whitechurch with his Labrador Retriever bitch, RT Ch. Adderslot Maggie May [AI] DM. We appreciated the support of the interstate competitors especially Tony Palmer, Judy Johnson and Leanne O'Sullivan who volunteered their services to steward at the trial also Anna Playdon and Francene Palmer. Our locals, Gail and Bob Phoenix and Vicki Jones also stewarded at the trial. The Novice Teams event was not held this year and possibly the new committee could look at holding it before the season starts next year as part of a training weekend. There will be a rules review for Retrieving Trials for Gundogs in 2024, and competitors will be able to submit any changes they think are required. Meetings will be held early in the new year to meet the deadline of the end of February 2024 for suggested rule changes to be sent to Dogs Australia. I thank the RAFT Advisory panel for their support and assistance during 2023 and look forward to another Retrieving season in 2024. Enjoy your Dogs. Graeme Allen - Chair SA RAFT Advisory Panel February 2024
EARTHDOG ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2023
The 2023 has seen the Earthdog Advisory Committee continue to provide earthdog tests in South Australia, as well as training in the sport. Throughout the year, the Earthdog Advisory Committee held 4 test days totalling 11 tests. This includes holding a Strong Dog only double test. The Committee also supported the Terrier Club of SA Inc in holding 2 test days totalling 6 tests. On average, there were just over 13 entries per test. The pass rate across entries was 42%. We had three breeds partake in the sport throughout the year: border terriers, jack russell terriers, and miniature pinschers. We also had various associate dogs compete. This is less diverse than breed entries we have had in previous years. Over the course of the year, 11 South Australian dogs earned their earthdog titles. We had: • 3 new earthdog grand champions, • 2 new earthdog champions, • 1 master earthdog title, • 1 senior earthdog title, • 3 junior earthdog title, and • 1 earthdog instinct certificate title. It should be noted the significant achievement for 3 dogs to gain their earthdog grand champion titles. These dogs are the first dogs to achieve this title in Australia, indicating the quality of earthdogs in South Australia. The club has continued to run webinar earthdog training which has been well received. We have also offered face-toface training days. Strong Dog The EAC was excited to host a double strong dog test day, utilising the recently revised rules. While only one dog got a pass, it illustrated the viability of the rule change and allowed the committee to consider how these tests would run moving forward. 2024 Plans The committee is exploring upgrading the earthdog area fencing, as the sporting community has expressed concern about dogs escaping the area, and the 10 year old fencing has begun to deteriorate. The committee has kept their accounts ‘in the black’ for many years and so we hope Dogs SA will be supportive of this important upgrade. Tegan Whalan Chair

OBEDIENCE NEWS Judge’s Retirement - Keith & Kathy Millington An acknowledgement from the Dogs SA Obedience Advisory Committee’s SGM Nov 2023 It is not often we do this but this is both a sad and happy occasion. The OAC has decided to use the SGM tonight to mark the retirement from judging by both Keith and Kathy after many decades of service to our sport. Their contribution has been significant over decades, to give you a brief history: Keith • Started at SDKODC in 1970 when he and his family were adopted by Sheba. Keith trained Sheba to her CX title. • In 1974 he commenced as an aspiring judge and had completed his training in 1978 as a full panel judge. Keith authored the first Trial Manager’s guide. • Keith moved to Darwin where he continued his involvement with the sport and started their first judges training scheme. • He returned to SA in 1985 and continued his involvement in judging and competing. In 1986 he started trialling his next Golden Retriever ‘Tisha’ (Ch Pepperhill Princess CDX AD ET QC). Since then he has trained and trialled ‘Tiffany’ a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. • Keith was key in establishing Agility as a sport in SA and was one of the founders of the Agility Dog Club of SA. • He has been a longstanding chief instructor and member of the Gundog Club of SA. • Keith spent several terms on the OAC and been active as a judge’s trainer and assessor. • More notable than any of the above achievements he married Kathy thirty years ago ultimately forming one of the few very successful husband and wife judging duos. They travelled extensively by caravan with dogs in tow all around Australia judging in every State and Territory and overseas (minus the van). • Keith and Kathy both share a philosophy that your dog should be given every opportunity to show its value not just in Obedience, but showing, Rally, Agility, Tracking & Retrieving having obtained titles for their dogs in 9 different classes of dog sport. • He is a Life Member of Dogs NT, SDKODC and the Gundog Club. • In his spare time Keith has taken on creating and organising the Barossa Valley Airshow as part of his Rotary Club role. • A 53 year commitment to our sport is something very unique and warrants our fullest recognition not just for the time but for the quality of that commitment. Kathy • Kathy start training her Shetland Sheepdog ‘Robby’ at SDKODC in 1980. • She has had 8 Shelties and competed with them all, most of them achieving their UD titles. • She spent years as the Show and Trial Secretary at SDKODC as well as instructing there and at the Gundog Club of SA. • Kathy started as an aspiring judge in 1998 and became a full panel judge in 2002. • She like Keith, has trained Nova Scotia Duck Trolling Retrievers in Obedience, Agility, Rally and Tracking, even for a short period in retrieving. • Kathy has travelled and judged across Australia and has judged many prestigious trials at Nationals and Royals. • Kathy is also a Life Member at SDKODC. Collectively they represent 96 years of commitment to dog obedience as administrators, trainers, competitors and judges. Considering our sport has only existed since the early 1950’s this is an epic level of commitment that deserves to be shared and acknowledged with our most sincere thanks and gratitude for their contribution. Please join me in thanking them and in offering this token of our recognition. February 2024
Neil MacDonald - Chair OAC
A message from Keith After 49 years as a judge, I have had to retire. Kathy too decided to call it a day after 22 years. We have enjoyed our judging, we have made many friends across Australia and overseas and we will miss them. The reasons for our retirement are mainly caused by too many birthdays. Our bodies are not recovering as quickly as we used to and aches and pains last several days after the trial. I have metal plates in my feet, neuropathy in my feet, balance problems in my ears and glaucoma in my eyes. Add in the arthritis and the stomach problems and you can see why I have had to stop. Kathy also has a few health problems that could affect her judgement, so the only right thing to do for the sport is for both of us to stop now before we make a calamitous mistake. Making a mistake in judging is serious as a wrong call undermines the integrity of the sport. I cannot move as quickly as a need to be in position for judging Agility, which means that I could be allowing a pass when it should be a fail. In Obedience and Rally I find I am tiring so that my concentration level is dropping and I risk making a wrong call. We will be out and about traveling in our caravan and our motor home when it arrives next year, so we may turn up at a trial or two just to say hello. Many thanks to all the Obedience, Rally and Agility people that have made our time as judges and competitors so exciting and the many friends we have met. The photo is of the p re s e n t a t i o n we received at the Blue Lake Obedience Club on the Saturday of the October 2023 trials. Photo by President Darren of the Blue Lake Obedience club.
