President’s Report Welcome all to 2024. 2023 was successful for our Association with the hosting of a number of events which were well received throughout the country. These events showed that although we are a relatively small association, we can keep up with the larger member bodies when it comes to hosting world class events. The Winter International won the award of most liked show again for the 3rd year in a row and who could overlook the fabulous facilities provided for us by the Adelaide Royal. Feed back from the interstate exhibitors was that the Adelaide Royal facilities were by far the best in the country. The new floor in the exhibition area was well received by all the disciplines that competed over the week and some great runs were achieved particularly by the Agility competitors. Some improvements were complete on facilities at David Roche Park with the old office being transformed into a more usable space for meetings and other activities. This was a large task which exceeded the cost budget due to asbestos being identified under the carpet and vinyl tiles throughout the building and the poor and non-conforming state of the electrical wiring which had to be remediated. After consultation with the members the name of the area decided upon was the “Kings Room”. The Kings Room has been named after Harold and Eunice King who were long time members of the association. Harold was a well-known Judge and Hound Group Leader on the conformation judges’ program. He was also a well and respected steward for many years. Eunice was synonymous with assisting with the junior handlers and spent many hours waiting for Harold, as the driver of their car, throughout all weather seasons. Completed in December was the refurbishment of the canteen front counter and shop front. Margaret, the canteen manager, and her band of volunteers in the canteen had been complaining about the condition for several years. The cupboards and draws are now closable and we are more compliant with food service regulations. As from 08 December 2023 new food safety standards were introduced and Dogs SA has been advised by the Port Adelaide Enfield Council that we and any other entity preparing or serving food at DRP must comply with the regulations. In the January Journal you will also find voting papers for the election of office bearers for Dogs SA Council. The positions are for the Vice President and 4 Councillors. It is important that you vote to have your say as contrary to what some think they are there not just to sit on council and to make decisions but they are also there to represent the views and wishes of the members. So, vote carefully so we can have harmonious and united forward-thinking council. As many are aware $1 from every puppy registered goes towards Canine Health Research. Council recently endorsed the sum $6,000 be granted to the James Cook University in North Queensland in association with Dogs Queensland to conduct research into the spread and possible effects of Ehrlichia canis (Brown Tick Disease). Although not prevalent in SA at the moment cases have been identified primarily from dogs that have been north and come back with the tick. More on Ehrlichia canis can be found on both the Dogs SA and Dogs Australia web sites. Carter has gained the following titles in 2023 - TKN, JD & JDX, RA, SWN, he was State 300 Novice Agility Champ and has qualifications in AD, TD & SD. Fenway turned 8 this year but that didn't slow her down, she gained the following titles in 2023 - Neuter Champion, TKN, SWN, ADX, RE, she also has qualifications in TD, SWA, SPD, SD, JDO, JDM, ADM & qualified for NOTY 2023. Dear Members, I have once again offered my support and nomination for positions for Dogs SA elections. I have held the position of Councillor for the past two years which I have enjoyed and found challenging and I believe that I have made a positive contribution to Dogs SA in this role and in other areas. I have also decided to nominate for the position of Vice President and feel that I have the knowledge and skill to carry out either of these positions. I have held various positions in my working life including that of Regional Manager for an international company that dealt with finances, people, employment and recruitment. I have held the position of President of the German Shepherd Dog Club of SA (GSDCSA) for over 24 years and am the longest serving President of the club. I have also served on the Obedience Advisory Committee of Dogs SA. More recently, I contributed to the lobbying of Government Departments in regards to recent dog incidents Australia wide. I am a handson approach person that believes in being present in person in addition to working behind the scenes. The dog world is facing challenges and we need a diverse mix of people to work in protecting our hobby. I strongly believe that I hold the necessary attributes and drive to help keep moving Dogs SA forward and work for the members and ultimately to protect our breeders and hobby into the future. Councillor As it is now time for new Councillors to be elected, it is my earnest wish to be return to Council, which will allow me to once again, serve you the members.

It is important to any committee to have diverse expertise of willing workers at all levels, and I have a proven record of being a reliable, willing worker, plus a long time active member of our great sport. I am a second-generation dog person following my late parents with many years of Group six involvement. This includes being a member of several club committees, a SACA representative, Junior Handler Judge, Ring Steward, and general all-round Club and Show assistance person. I can be found at most shows, working often simply as an extra, not necessarily on that committee. I am not afraid of hard work, especially if it contributes to ongoing improvements for the general membership benefits. I also see myself as being an independent, decisive, honest, and willing to continually learn for the benefit of our Association. Vice President / Councillor

I have now completed three terms on Council, the last as Vice President, and it has been a pleasure to serve the canine community in South Australia during this time. I hope to continue to do so as either Vice President or as a Councillor for the next three years. My 45 year involvement with Dogs SA has given me a vast knowledge of all our various activities. My continual involvement in various Dogs SA Committees, such as Winter International, Stewards Training along with mentoring and assisting several Clubs, city and country, is well known. Behind the scenes I have also worked on several Dogs SA sub-committees including the preparation of the Dogs SA Strategic Plan. One of the key responsibilities of being a Councillor is to represent members and one I believe in strongly. The future of our hobby is under threat from several directions and it is the responsibility of Council to map the way forward for the next generation. We need to change the way we do things and look for new ways to engage with the many dog owners in our community. It is the nonConformation areas in which we have the biggest opportunity to do this by investing in our Training Clubs and promoting their activities in the community to appeal to the new dog owner and potential new Dogs SA Member. I ask for your support for the future and continual success of Dogs SA as the leader of Canine activities in South Australia. We must continue to change to move forward. RICHARD CHAPMAN-STEVENS Councillor Dear Dogs SA Members, I'm excited to take the opportunity to stand for Council and hope to gain your support. I view this role as an opportunity to make a significant difference to the future of our canine community. My involvement is primarily in Conformation, however I am also involved in Obedience and Scentwork. As a result, I am aware of some of the concerns members have across several canine disciplines. My reasons for standing for Council I believe it is vital that we focus on growing the Association while retaining our current membership, a goal that is only achievable with your support. I aim to bring my calm, cohesive work ethic to council, focusing on the association’s growth, strength and its efficient governance in the service of its members. My 15 year journey with Dogs SA so far has been dedicated to promoting purebred dogs and our Association, along with responsible dog ownership. My contribution to date has centred around organizing events, engaging with the public and the canine community. My commitment to our association occupies a large portion of my free time, as a member of Dogs SA, I have served on multiple breed club committees, holding many positions including President and instructor. I am one third of the Dogs SA Junior Handlers Sub Committee, organizing regular heats, fundraising events, and the Snowflake Spectacular Junior Handler State Final weekend.

For the past 5 years I have been a volunteer obedience instructor, show handling trainer and more recently scent work instructor for The Gundog Club of SA.

For the last 3 years I have been Head Trainer on behalf of Dogs SA, offering weekly Show Training to members, with a focus on creating a fun environment for members new and old to share, learn and collaborate with each other, whilst providing a welcoming starting point for those new to our Association.

I am a steward for Conformation shows, Obedience and Scentwork trials.

Our Association's Future I believe we must engage our members in shaping the future to ensure the continued success of dog sports and the wellbeing of our Association. BEN LUXTON Councillor

In my first term on Council I have contributed the following: Finance – interpreting the monthly and annual financial statements, questioning expenditure, reviewing DOGS SA financial performance against previous years and ensuring transparency in the Auditor’s reports. Human Resources – Reviewed and updated Position Descriptions for DOGS SA staff, assisted in the recruitment of the Executive Officer and support Council in the professional development of current staff. Governance –assisted the drafting of an updated Constitution and support Council with appropriate Governance process. Evidence based decisions – Drafted reports for Council’s decision regarding edits to the Rules, the Association’s Governance Charter, Heat policy, alternative format for Conformation exhibitions and many more. Involvement – DOGS SA representative to DOGS Australia Canine Health and Wellbeing Committee and informed the Dogs Australia response to the Australia Veterinary Association’s Policy regarding Surgical Inseminations and the AVA’s current view on brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, French Bulldogs and British Bulldogs). Independent thinking – I am a critical thinker and inform my opinion and therefore my vote on Council through consultation in any area of the Association across all of its disciplines. Member of DOGS SA for over 40 years and exhibit Siberian Huskies, Pugs and Basenji. • Foundation and life member of the Pug Club of South Australia Inc. • All Breeds Conformation judge since 2008. • Member of the Dogs SA 2024 Agility Advisory Committee. • Own Petherton Park Boarding Kennels and Cattery. • Formerly, the Executive Officer of the Dog and Cat Management Board in South Australia. ARAMIS “JOEY” LIM Councillor

I was born into the Dog World with my parents having been breeders, exhibitors and judges of pedigreed dogs and founding members of the Philippine Canine Club Inc. I studied Medical Pathology at University in the Philippines and managed family businesses. Since arriving in Australia nearly 40 Years ago, I have served on canine committees, Vice Chairman of the Dogs SA Winter International, Life Member and current committee member of the All Breeds Dog Club of SA and the Dogs SA DOTY/POTY & NOTY show. During my time with Dogs SA Winter International, this event has grown and happily continues to be innovative, with the aim of “giving back” to Members. It has proven to be the Premier Showcase for Pedigree Dogs in South Australia, thanks to a dedicated committee who are passionate about promoting our love of pedigreed dogs. I take great pleasure in mentoring and assessing our up and coming judges and have been long been a member of the Assessing Panel. My experience as a judge has taken me all over the world and I am constantly in conversation with organizing officials, discussing canine activities and looking for further innovative ideas to bring back to the South Australian Canine fraternity. After a few years break from council duty, I am now refreshed and eager to run again for election. My aim will be to continue to work for the benefit of the entire Membership, in all disciplines of canine activity, encouraging new exhibitors and members. Dogs SA Judge Licence Renewals were due by 1st December 2023 If you have not paid your Judge Licence or made application as a Trainee Judge, you cannot accept any appointments after the 31st December 2023. SUMMARY OF THE DOGS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & BOARD MEETING HELD IN MELBOURNE ON 21 & 22 OCTOBER 2023 At the recent Annual General Meeting of the Australian National Kennel Council Limited held in Melbourne: 1.

Election of ANKC Ltd Executive • Ms Pam Campbell was elected unopposed as Vice President for a one-year term from 21 October 2023. • Mr David Sales was re-elected unopposed as Treasurer for a one-year term from 21 October 2023. • Mr Brian Parker was elected as a member of the Executive Committee for a one-year term from 21 October 2023.

ANKC Ltd Constitution – New Clause 34A.5 It was resolved that the Constitution of the Company be amended by the inclusion of the following clause: 34A.5 Should the office of the Director elected to the Executive Committee become vacant prior to the expiry of his or her term of office, the Directors shall elect a Director from amongst their number to serve the balance of the term of office of the retiring Director. This amendment is effective immediately. At the October 2023 Dogs Australia Board meeting, Directors resolved/considered the following: 1. FCI Membership It was resolved that Dogs Australia proceed with investigation of full membership with FCI: • to establish what conditions, we would require in a memorandum of understanding to protect our members. • prepare a discussion paper based on the memorandum of understanding for distribution to Member Bodies requesting feedback by a date to be determined. 2. DNA Parentage Verification It was agreed not to support national DNA Parentage verification as a prerequisite to registration on the Main and Limited Register for all puppies as each Member Body has the ability to implement DNA testing if they so desire. 3.

Exhibition of Dogs with Docked Tails It was resolved to oppose the prevention of dogs with docked tails from being exhibited at any conformation show in Australia.

* Regulations Part 3 – Judges Training & Examination Scheme It was resolved that Regulations Part 3 – Judges Training & Examination Scheme be amended as follows: Add new Clauses 8.4, 8.5, 86. and 8.7 8. Appointment of Assessors. To be appointed by the Conformation Judges Training Committee, an Assessor must not be a Trainee Judge in the current Judges Training Program and must. 8.1 Be a resident of the Member body conducting the Assessors course. 8.2 Be invited by the chair of the CJC of the Member’s State Body. 8.3 Invitation to attend the course must be in writing through the Member Body 8.4 Not be under investigation for any offence by the Member Body. 8.5 Hold a Certificate of Approval issued under the ANKC Accreditation Program stating that the Assessor has completed the competency training. 8.6 Have held an ANKC Breed or Group Licence for a minimum of five (5) years for the Group or Breed being used in the examination. 8.7 Have judged the Group or Breed being used in the examination on at least three (3) occasions. AND Add new regulation to read: 6.1.2 Module 2. Practical Experience Judge a minimum of fifty (50) dogs and additionally examine and critique a minimum of 20 dogs from the relevant Group. The breeds covered must be from, as wide a range as possible, but will include at least one five (15) critiques from each of the five (5) Major Breeds as determined by the Member Body CJTC. This may be achieved by attending Field days or shows. All critiques to be countersigned on the day by a licensed judge for that breed who is not a Trainee Judge currently enrolled in the scheme and is, preferably, an Accredited Assessor, and who have themselves examined the dogs critiqued. Judging may be in the form of hands on experience by placing dogs at open shows, sweepstakes or field days, but not at breed lectures. (Amended 10/13 – 5.6.4) (Amended 10/14, 7.4.2) (Amended 10/17, 7.4.1 – effective 01/01/18) Approved Distance Trainees may complete the critiques by downloading photos of dogs from the Internet and approved by the Group Coordinator. (Amended 10/10) These amendments will be effective from 1 January 2024.

* Regulations Part 5 – Confirmation Shows Clause 2.7 At the recent Dogs Australia Board meeting the following points were noted in relation to the use of ramps effective 1 January 2024: 1. The use of ramps is not mandatory and is at the sole direction of the judge. 2. Only ramp and ramp optional breeds are to be judged on the ramp. 3. Once a breed has commenced the entire breed is to be judged in the same manner (e.g. ramp or ground, excluding babies). 4. That the Dogs Australia judges contract be amended to include an area where the judge is to nominate if they require a ramp for ramp breeds. 5. If ramps are not available in the location the club hosting the event is to notify the judge. For the full Dogs Australia ramp/table/ground regulations refer to Dogs Australia Regulations Part 5, Clause 2.7 Use of Ramps/Tables.

* Regulations Part 5 – Confirmation Shows Section 9 Amendment It was resolved that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows Section 9, Clause 9.7 Classes be amended as follows to align to the current FCI class numbering: 9.7 Classes 9.7.1 Only the following classes are recognized at Dogs Australia /CACIB shows sanctioned by the FCI: a. Classes ineligible for the CACIB to be awarded: (Amended 02/23, 5.11 – Effective 01/07/23) Class 1 Baby Puppy For dogs aged three and under six months. Class 2 Minor Puppy For dogs aged six and under nine months. Class 3 Puppy For dogs aged six and under twelve months. Class 12 Veteran For dogs aged eight years and over. (Added 02/23, 5.11 – Effective 01/07/23)

Class 11 Open For dogs 15 months and over that are not Champions Class 21 Champion To enter a dog in Champion Class, the title must have been confirmed by the issue of a Registered Pedigree Certificate with the title added by the day of the official closing date of entries. A Champion that has not attained 15 months of age may not be awarded a CACIB.

Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows: Amendment to Clause 10.5.2 (d) It was resolved that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows Clause 10.5.2 (d) be amended as follows: Currently reads: d. Runner up to Best in Group Each Runner Up in the recognized seven (7) groups or ten (10) at CACIB shows – ten (10) points less than the Best in Group Winner or breed points whichever is higher, with the minimum being six points. Amended to read: d. Runner up to Best in Group Each Runner Up in the recognized seven (7) groups or ten (10) at CACIB shows (must be a challenge or Reserve challenge winner) – ten (10) points less than the Best in Group Winner or breed points whichever is higher, with the minimum being six points. This amendment will be effective from 1 January 2024. * Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration Clause 6.7 Amendment It was resolved that Regulations Part 6: The Register & Registration, Clause 6.7: Neuter Register, under Definition, which currently states:6.7 Neuter Register (Added 06/22, 4.2 – effective 01/01/2023) Definitions: Neutering – removal of the sex organs i.e.. testicles or ovaries. Judges Contract - Amendment It was resolved that the Dogs Australia Judges Contract be amended to include an additional field for Judges to indicate if they wish to use a ramp and for Show Secretaries to advise if ramps are or are not available. This amendment will be effective 1 January 2024. * Rules for the Conduct of Obedience Trials - Amendments It was resolved that the Rules for the Conduct of Obedience Trials be amended as follows: 7. Exhibits - Fouling A dog which fouls at any time while it is under the control of the Judge must be disqualified and removed from the ring immediately. 8. Exhibitors and Handlers - Disqualification No points awarded. The dog is disqualified from all Trial Competition on the day and the Judge must provide a written report to the Member Body within 14 days. The only exception being In instances where the disqualification was incurred for continual barking, a correction penalty, fouling the ring or for handlers bringing training aids into the ring, handlers will only be disqualified from that class and no report is required. This amendment will be effective 1 January 2024. * Rules for the Conduct of Retrieving Trials for Gundogs - Amendments It was resolved that the Rules for the Retrieving Trials for Gundogs be amended as follows: Currently reads: (k) Game – Definition of - Quail, Duck, Pigeon, Partridge, Pheasant, Rabbit and Hare, inclusive of domesticated variants of the above species. (Refer also to Rule No.7) Be amended to read: 8 (k) Game – Definition of - Quail, Duck, Pigeon, Partridge, Grouse, Ptarmigan, Pheasant, Rabbit and Hare, inclusive of domesticated or replica variants of the above species. This amendment will be effective 1 January 2024. * Dogs Australia Rules - Amendment Amendments to the following rules have been endorsed and will be effective 1 January 2024. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22) As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required. 2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16) 3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce. 4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases. 5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (11/21) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20) (f) A current veterinary certificate is defined as a certificate dated within three months prior to the mating. (11/21) 6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. 7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19) 8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health. 9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12) 10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. 11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12) 12. I shall ensure that every dog in every litter I breed will be registered as required in the SACA Rules. (07/22)

WE HAVE WAITED A LONG TIME FOR THIS For most of us 1973 is a dim memory. However, that year the Labrador Retriever bitch RT CH Kaldare Proud Miss trialled by Mr G Jenner won the 5th National Championship Non Slip Retrieving trial – the last time that a South Australian dog won the “National”. Move the clock on 50 years and the name of another South Australian dog now appears on the very impressive “National” trophy. GR RT CH Nativerun Angus CM owned & handled by Mr R Ashenden won the 2023 National Championship held jn Western Australia. Judged by Ron Jackson from Queensland and Allan Bartram from Western Australia, the trial consisted of 8 runs over 3 days. Guss scored 412 points which was 14 points ahead of the second placegetter. Ray has been involved in working Gundogs since the 1970’s training and competing in both Field and Retrieving trials. His contribution to the sport was recognised by the ANKC when he was inducted into the Retrieving Hall of Fame in 2020. Guss was born in May 2017 and competed in his first retrieving trial at 8 months of age. He quickly moved up the levels from Novice to Restricted to All Age. Right from the start it was apparent that Guss was going to be an exceptional retriever and fortunately he found an equally talented trainer and handler. Together they have created a formidable combination and potentially have years of competing ahead as Guss is really only a youngster in terms of retrieving dogs, In addition, Guss has won the Dogs SA Top Retrieving Dog trophy for the last 6 years. Ramps are not mandatory and will be at the sole discretion of the judge.

Only ramp and ramp optional breeds to be judged on the ramp.

Once a breed has commenced, the entire breed will be judged in the same manner (eg ramp, table or ground, excluding babies).

Dogs Australia judges contract will be amended to provide an area for the judge to indicate if a ramp is required (for ramp breeds)

If ramps are not available in the location the club hosting the event is to notify the judge.
