President’s Report

Following the AGM and the proposed redraft of the Dogs SA constitution being narrowly defeated by 1 vote, Dogs SA Council has taken on board the issues which members were against and has made changes to reflect the majority wishes. The areas identified were the Council appointing the Vice President from within and the appointment of casual vacancies. Both points have been amended to allow members to again vote for the Vice President and the filling of casual vacancies by appointment will only be until the next scheduled election. It is intended to call a Special General Meeting in July 2024 to again put the revised draft Constitution to the members. It is hoped it will this time be supported by 75% of the membership present so we can go to electronic/hard copy voting for the election to be held at the end of 2024.

As many are seeing on Face Book the government has released the “Draft Amendment Bill for the Dog and Cat Management Act 1985” for comment. There has been no consultation with Dogs SA to this point which is very disturbing as we were promised to be consulted as a peak organisation for canine activities and welfare. After speaking with a number of members and I am apologetic that we have not been able to get around to all of the disciplines I have decided to hold an information meeting for members to discuss the pro’s and con’s of the Draft bill and what it may mean for many of us. The meeting is to be held in the bar at David Roche Park, Tuesday, 04 June 2024, commencing at 7PM. The meeting will be livestreamed if you would like to view from home.

Members are also encouraged to contact their local state members to discuss the issues with the draft. We need to place pressure on the government now as we are approaching an election within the next 12 months. It is only as a united team can we effect the cause of actions we are seeking.

The Pet Show at Wayville has been concluded and I am waiting on a report from Brian Fielder who was the Dogs SA Councilor organizing the event. Many thanks to Brian and his team for tending to the Dogs SA stand and those who had their own breed stands. Also to Simon and Rachael from the office for assisting with the bump in and out. These sorts of events are crucial to the brand promotion of Dogs SA for both the pedigree dog world and also the various activities that we conduct to keep both the dogs and owners healthy and promote responsible dog ownership.

Apart from the Dogs SA Blackhawk Winter International which is the Dogs SA premier Conformation event, we also have the Dogs SA Agility Advisory Committee’s Sate Agility, Jumping and Games Championships to be held at the Munno Para Obedience Dog Club from Saturday 8th to Monday 10th of June 24. All are welcome and it is a great opportunity to see some of the state’s top dogs in action.

• Restriction number of shows

Effective 1st June 2025 that all Affiliates be restricted to clusters of 4 Championship Shows in a weekend (with the exception of Mount Gambier and Port Pirie at Easter) unless approved by the Executive Officer.

• Cancellation of Exhibitions

If an event is cancelled with less than 6 months’ notice to the Dogs SA Office, there will be no refund of show and / or trial booking fees.

• Marquee site booking fee increase

Site booking fee for all events held from 1st January 2025 will be:

Up to 3 x 6 $50

Up to 6 x 6 $100

Over 6 x 6 $150

Dogs SA Policy for Photographers at David Roche Park

• Any person is permitted to take photographs on the grounds providing they are not selling such photographs

• Any person who intends to take photographs on the grounds for renumeration must supply proof of Public Liability Insurance to the Dogs SA Office

• Any person who intends to have a site on the grounds for either displaying and or the taking of photographs for sale, must pay the appropriate site fee

• Clubs who engage a photographer to take photographs on their behalf, have the right to make the photographer exclusive for their event. No other commercial photographers are then permitted to operate during that Club event/s.

THE MINIATURE AMERICAN SHEPHERD

The Miniature American Shepherd was developed in California during the late 1960's with the breeding of small, unregistered dogs that were thought to be Australian Shepherds. These dogs were bred with a goal of maintaining their small size, active character and intelligence.

The breed was first registered with the National Stock Dog Registry in 1980 and was originally called the Miniature Australian Shepherd. By the early 1990's, they had attained nationwide popularity. Several clubs promoted these small dogs, as they were registered and shown with various rare-breed organizations. The first parent breed club and registry, MASCUSA, was formed in 1990 and incorporated in 1993. The breed entered the AKC Foundation Stock Service as the Miniature American Shepherd in May 2011. The Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA (MASCUSA) is the designated national parent club of the American Kennel Club.

The breed has been used for herding smaller stock such as sheep and goats, although they have the heart to tackle larger stock as well. Their small size was looked upon with favour, as they could more easily double as a household pet. They became especially popular with equestrians traveling to horse shows, as their intelligence, loyalty, and size made them an excellent travel companion. In this way their popularity spread across the country.

Today, the Miniature American Shepherd is established across the

U.S. and internationally. It is a breed with a unique identity - an eye catching, versatile little herding dog, equally at home on a ranch or in the city.

The Miniature American Shepherd is a herding dog to be designated to the Herding Group in the American Kennel Club.

The breed was officially recognised by Dogs Australia in August 2022.

BREED COLOURS

Miniature American Shepherds come in base colours of either red or black, or a variation of the base colour known as merle, with or without white and/or copper trim.

Blue Merle

A blue merle has patches and patterns of black on a background varying from slate gray to powder blue. He may also have white and/or copper trim.

Red Merle

A red merle has patches and patterns of red on a cream coloured background. He may also have white and/or copper trim.

Black Bi or Black Tri

The black has a solid black body. They may have white trim, in which case they would be a black bi, or copper and white, which would be a black tri.

Red Bi or Red Tri

The reds vary in intensity from a deep mahogany to a brownishred colour. As with the blacks, a red and white is termed a red bi; add copper points and the dog is a red tri.

Retrieving news

At last we have received the submissions for rule changes to the "Rules for the Conduct of Retrieving Trials for Gundogs" and "Regulations Part 3A - Retrieving Trial Judges Training Scheme".

6 states (including South Australia) have made submissions and they can be found here: https://dogsaustralia.org.au/about-dogsaustralia/2024-rule-review-submissions-nationalretrieving-field-trial-committee/

The most useful document is probably the 7th one where all submissions are collated in rule number order. The submissions for the Retrieving Trial Judges Training Scheme are at the same link.

There are a huge number of proposals, 55 pages of them in fact.

The next step is that SA RAFT will call a meeting (or maybe 2) to discuss the proposals and decide how we will direct our delegate to vote at the July National RAFT meeting. This will mean that you need to have read through the proposals and formed your opinions before that meeting.

Once a meeting date has been decided RAFT will advise the retrieving fraternity. If you are not on the usual Retrieving Mailing List and would like to be kept informed, please contact Lynne Webster at lynnew@adam.com.au

Dogs Australia use of Ramp & Tables effective 1st January 2024

At the recent Dogs Australia Board meeting the following points were noted in relation to the use of ramps effective 01 January 2024:

1. Ramps are not mandatory and will be at the sole discretion of the judge.

2. Only ramp and ramp optional breeds to be judged on the ramp.

3. Once a breed has commenced, the entire breed will be judged in the same manner (eg ramp, table or ground, excluding babies).

4. Dogs Australia judges contract will be amended to provide an area for the judge to indicate if a ramp is required (for ramp breeds)

5. If ramps are not available in the location the club hosting the event is to notify the judge.

A Veterinary Certificate issued within fourteen (14) days immediately prior to the date of the test must be submitted for each dog on the day of the test. It shall cover such things as the general fitness, temperature, standing heart rate, condition of the pads and muscle tone of the dog. (For bitches the certificate is also to state the bitch is not in whelp.
