President’s Report In opening I would firstly like to congratulate Peter Thompson for being reelected as Vice President with John De Lucia and Ben Luxton as returning Councilors. Welcome also to Joy Lim and Richard Chapman-Stevens onto Council for 3 years. I would also like to thank Sheryle Pike and Caroline Murphy for their last 3 years of service on the Dogs SA Council. For various personal reason neither of the two ladies decided to re-stand for a further term. Please join with me in thanking Sheryle and Caroline for their time and effort which was much appreciated. These Council election results will be confirmed at the 72nd General Meeting of the South Australian Canine Association (Inc) to be held on Wednesday 20 March 2024 at 7PM in the hall at David Rocke Park. Council and I would like to see as much participation as possible at the meeting as there are some very significant changes to our Constitution being proposed. There has been considerable consultation with the membership on the changes and as always not all will be satisfied with them but it is time we moved forward. Changes cannot be made on the night so after discussion it will be a yes/no vote to either accept or reject the new Constitution. Should anyone require a copy of the proposed constitution please contact the office on info@dogssa. com.au and a copy can be emailed to you. Alternatively, I am happy to speak with members if they wish. As with each summer there is conjecture over the Hot Weather Policy (HWP). Council adjusted the HWP for 2023/24 with the temperature being reduced from 37 to 35 Degrees for most activities. Additionally, as from 01 March 2024 Council also revised the requirements affiliates were required to fund should an event be cancelled due to the HWP. We understand the policy is not perfect however when dealing with the weather everything is unpredictable. The current policy provides protection for both the Exhibitor and the affiliate hosting the event in addition to the Association. Council and I are happy to discuss alternatives should a member like to put them forward. European Wasps are again an issue on the grounds and Dogs SA is endeavouring to reduce the occurrence of the wasps, however they are attracted to the food and drink we bring each week as well as the bait dropped on the ground. Every weekend I hear members say but I don’t throw bait - sorry but most do and so often I have walked around the rings and found large pieces of sausage/chicken or whatever on the ground. Dogs SA will recommence a baiting program however we imagine this process has to be very selective as to not risk poisoning dogs on the grounds. You cannot place baits on the grounds yourself and do not place food or drink in other areas in an attempt to entice them away from you. All you are doing is making them someone else’s issue and attracting more wasps. If you can see them and follow them back to a nest report it to the office or SACA Rep and Dogs SA will get the local council to eradicate them. DO NOT APPROACH THEM YOURSELF. Australian Final Winner Deana Musolino who will now be Representing Australia in the International Junior Hander Final at Crufts in March. From a very young age Deana has always displayed an affinity with the dogs and the bond she shares with each dog always shines through. GRANT APRECIATION CEREMONY At the Club’s invitation, President Brian Parker and Executive Officer Cheryl Currie attended the Grant appreciation ceremony hosted by the Adelaide Plains Kennel & Obedience Club at their grounds in Lewiston on a Wednesday morning with perfect weather on display. Invited guests included the Member for Grey, Rowan Ramsey MP. Members from Adelaide Plains Council, CEO James Miller, Mayor Mark Wasley, Community Development Officer Susan Dugan, Community Development & Community Mike Ravno. Luke Miller from Echo & Plains Producer Media was also in attendance. On this occasion, the club dedicated the gathering to acknowledge and gratefully receive the “July 2023 – Stronger Communities Programme Round 8 Grant” from the Representative for Grey, Rowan Ramsey MP. This grant of $15,000 was utilised towards their kitchen fit out and appliances. The Club continues to spend hours of their time applying for grants to assist them in their future endeavours and have applied for eleven other grants before this once was gratefully received. Last year the club members managed to paint their clubrooms, install new flooring, tint windows, complete the kitchen, purchase equipment for classes which was achieved through the commitment and effort from the dedicated committee. The focus for 2024 projects that funding is still required for is the completion of the bathroom facilities, complete the servery in the canteen area, but the main project continues to be to substantiate a suitable sustainable water source to provide a grassed area for training and competition. The Club volunteers at regular Bunnings BBQ, at Munno Para, and are a major source of income for this club. Their Christmas raffle was also a success raising $1657.00 which is impressive. Such a huge commitment from the Members of this club that are commended for their continued efforts to fund future improvements at their grounds. Adelaide Plains Kennel & Obedience Club continues to run four training sessions a week which have grown with demand. In time,

if they can source grass and water, this will continue to expand, and new members will be encouraged with the improvement of facilities. The Tuesday evening puppy class has provided many new puppies with socialisation and exposure to other breeds. Many of these new babies go on to compete in conformation and the groundwork is invaluable. The Club can boast thirteen Best Baby in Show awards in the last 18 months. Their Membership base extends from Lewiston, Two Wells, Gawler, Roseworthy, Williamstown, Hamley Bridge, Dublin, Port Wakefield, Munno Para, Blair Athol, Curramulka with the 2023 Membership numbers showing 90 families/singles. Thank you to President Deb Heinze and all Members of Adelaide Plains Kennel & Obedience Dog Club for showing us your impressive facilities and making us feel so welcome. The Clubrooms are impressive with an enormous potential for future use. The Members commitment and pride in the facility was inspiring and we wish you the very best for the continued development of this up-and-coming resource to all dog owners in the area (and beyond).
