We are heading into the silly season of the dog world with Brisbane, Melbourne and not forgetting Adelaide Royal shows getting underway. The Adelaide Royal has a fantastic entry for the size of our state once again showing that we do have the best Royal with the facilities we have available to us. Conformation entries are slightly down this year however the entry numbers are made up with exceptional entries in the Dog Sport disciplines so well done to all.
Some of the sporting disciplines are currently going through their 5 yearly rule reviews. These are very important to the continuing growth of these disciplines and I encourage all those involved to participate at a level at which you feel comfortable. On a positive note, the sport most dear to me Sled Sports, had its rules review completed and endorsed by the Dogs Australia Board. There were a number of changes made to which I would encourage those interested in Sled Sports to read them. Further to this the Dogs Australia rules review committee is currently working on two new activities for members to participate in, those being Cannicross and Bikejor.
Over the past months Dogs SA has had to deal with issues where it appears that Clubs and committees are not always working in the best interest of what they are there for. This is very concerning to both Council and staff as it can present a bad presence not just within Dogs SA but also by the wider community. A reminder to read the objectives or Term of Reference of what your Club or committee are there to promote. Nothing should be about self-interest.
With the recent welcome rains concern has again been raised over the water pooling in the rear car park at David Roche Park and around the sheds by ring 6. Council is reviewing these issues but as you can understand the relocation of these pools has to very carefully considered and dealt with appropriately as by simply filling the holes could lead to pooling in other areas which may have a more detrimental effect on the use of the grounds.
A new initiative on the Dogs SA Public Facebook Page is ‘What’s On This Week’ which has been well received by the members. Further to this we are always looking at reaching out to the general public. Many clubs and individuals have been attending Pet Expos and other events which Brian Fielder has been coordinating on Dogs SA behalf. Another way of getting the message across is where most local councils have community pages on their websites. These community pages allow for free advertising of events in their local areas so contact your local council and get them to assist in promoting events. Port Adelaide Council has already promoted several events being held at David Roche Park.
The take up by members on the Respiratory Function Grading (RFG) within SA has been below that of the National average. RFG is extremely important for brachycephalic breeds which now have an accepted test and grading (Pug, French Bulldog, and British Bulldog). Other breeds may be tested however the results are either a yes/no with no grading at this time. There are currently 3 Veterinarians accredited to conduct the grading in SA and information relating to the RFG Scheme can be found at Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (dogsaustralia.org.au)

2024 THEORY & PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONS FOR CONFORMATION TRAINEE/ASPIRANT JUDGES
Application forms to apply for the Theory Exam to be held on Sunday 3rd November 2024, is included in the Dogs SA September magazine and available on the Dogs SA website.
Applications will close on Friday 11th October 2024.
Alternative dates for either Theory or Practical Examinations will only be considered for work or health related matters and all requests must be accompanied by a certificate from the employer or health practitioner.
If you have a health-related condition that prevents you from completing the Theory exam in the traditional manner, this will be taken into consideration on submission of your health practitioner’s certificate.
Practical Examinations are schedule for Sunday 8th December 2024 during the day but allowing for the Examinations to be moved to Sunday evening in the case of Hot Weather Policy activating.
Attention Member Bodies and Show Secretaries
Our previous advice concerning the contracting of Judges from FCI National Canine Organisations (NCO’s) to judge at FCI International Shows has raised queries from a number of Member Bodies as to how the new regulation will affect overseas FCI judges being contracted to non FCI Championship Shows in Australia.
Approvals for overseas judges are granted in accordance with Dogs Australia Regulations 9 Non Resident Judges Section 2, which sets out a number of scenarios where judges may be approved to judge breeds in Australia which they are not approved for in their country of residence, which are used for judges from the UK, America and Canada, however FCI judges are bound by FCI Judges Regulation 6 e A judge may under no circumstances agree to judge a breed at any show for which he is not approved by his own national organization. The same applies for judging at Best in Group and Best in Show level. This means that with FCI judges we can only approve them for breeds that their own NCO approves them for.
This presents a challenge for the Dogs Australia Office as many applications for FCI judges are supported by letters from their NCO approving them for Best in Show, Best in Group or breeds which are not listed in their entry in the FCI Judges Directory. Although the new FCI regulation pertains only to FCI International Shows we believe that the same criteria should be applied for Australian Championship Shows. We have written advice from the FCI that if there are discrepancies between the FCI Directory and the NCO’s statement, Dogs Australia should advise the NCO that their information is different from what is reflected in the Judges Directory and that, according to FCI, we must follow the Judges Directory.

The Retrieving & Field Trials Advisory Panel would like to thank those members who have contributed to the rules review for Retrieving Trials for Gundogs. Special thanks must go to Lynne Webster for all the work she did behind the scenes. This has been a long process beginning with a call for submissions back in February and then a meeting to discuss what proposals we would put to Dogs Australia. That was the easy part.
Congratulations to all competitors at the State, fantastic to watch the dog work, I really enjoyed it as a spectator.
Thanks to our judge Paul Littlejohn (Tas), glad he has a sense of humour; SACA Rep Geoff Maudlen (Pointer & Setter Championship Judge and Conformation All Breeds Judge for those who don’t know him); Trial Manager John Nairn and all of those who helped before, during and after the Championship. Without the entries and assistance of the interstate competitors there would be no SA State. To the few local workers - RAFT committee and Michael Mason who worked solidly setting up Friday and on the throwers all day Saturday, Jeff and Graeme on the throwers on Sunday thank you; I appreciate all of you.

After a slight delay, whilst some other states were asked to re-format their submissions in the correct manner (not us thankfully) the proposals were circulated to each state. There were a staggering 55 pages of submissions! Some of which would significantly change the direction of our sport. Certainly this is the most wide-ranging review in many, many years.
RAFT SA appreciated the input from those who read and registered comments on the proposals; those who took the time to complete the survey form and those who came to the July meeting to decide on South Australia’s position on each of the proposals. I attended the 2-day annual RAFT meeting held in Melbourne to represent our views. Now we wait to see the results and find out what the rules we are trialling under in 2025 will look like.

During 9-14th July a number of DogsSA agility competitors headed off to Sydney for the 2024 Agility Nationals held at Dogs NSW. The weather had not been kind to the nationals committee and the grounds had turned into a swamp for the trials. Whilst the grounds conditions remained very wet, slippery and muddy for the whole week, the sun came out to play for most of the week, making for perfect agility weather!
The competition kicked off with the state team event, where each team ran an agility and a jumping round. The fastest team with the least cumulative faults wins! Our SA State team did a magnificent job coming in second place across all states. Our team included Michelle Vauran and Rogue, Barbara Moore and Titan, Bevan Hill and Duke, Jessica Stroet and Finn, Katie Warland and Maddie and Natalie Mudge and Aurora. Congratulations and well-done team! You did SA proud!
Over the next four days our competitors ran in a series of agility and jumping runs at novice, excellent, masters and open levels, to qualify for the finals to be run on Sunday 14th July. Games, including snooker, gamblers and strategic pairs were also run across the four days with qualifiers becoming champions.
While it was a long but relatively uneventful drive for most on the way to Sydney, with many competitors stopping to explore the various towns along the way. On the way home it was a bit more eventful with a number of competitors dealing with blown out tyres and broken vehicles. In the end everyone made it home safe and sound, each one with the bestest dogs that could ever be!

Azawakh BREED PROFILE
History
It is an African sighthound descending from the types pictured in the wall paintings of the Central Sahara which date back thousands of years. The ever- increasing aridity of the Sahara caused Tuareg, Dahoussahaq and Peul shepherd-hunters to migrate with their dogs to the more hospitable lands of the Sahel: in areas suitable for farming and hunting along the dry valley of the Azawakh. Belonging to the culture of peoples who domesticated and shaped it, it is known as Oska in the Tuareg language. European enthusiasts discovered the breed with admiration, and selected with the help of the breeders who owned the first lines exported to Europe, as of 1968.
General Appearance: Particularly slim and elegant, the Azawakh sighthound gives a general impression of great slenderness. Its bone structure and muscles show through thin and dry skin. It is a slender dog whose body fits into a rectangle with a vertical long side.
About the Breed
FCI-CLASSIFICATION: Group 10 Sighthounds. Section 2 Shorthaired Sighthounds. Without working trial.
Group: Group 4 (Hounds)
SIZES: Height at the withers: Males: 64 –74 cm. Females: 60–70 cm. A margin of 2 cm above and below the standard is tolerated. Weight: Males: 20–25 kg. Females: 15–20 kg.
Coat: Skin: Thin and tight-fitting. Hair: Short, fine, and down to none on the belly.
COLOUR: Fawn, with or without brindles, with white patching limited to the extremities. All shades are admitted, clear sand to dark fawn (mahogany). Brindles should be black as excluding any other shade. The muzzle can present a black mask. White patching: The blaze is very inconstant. On the fore chest, white may be present as white patches,
more or less extensively, confined to the base of the neck. The bib should not extend past the point of the shoulder, or go up on each side of the neck. A small white spot on the nape of the neck, of reduced size, is tolerated. As a continuation of the fore chest, white spots can appear below the chest, but must not in any case go up the ribs. Each of the four limbs has a white stocking, at least as a trace on the feet. On a subject having excellent morphology, the lack of white on one limb is allowed. The white marks on the forequarters, often irregular, should not extend beyond the elbows, or encroach on the shoulders. The white marks on the hindquarters, often more regular and less invasive, should not go up to the thigh. White marks appearing on the inner side of the thigh, however, should not be considered a fault.
Life Span: 12 to 15 years
Temperament: Quick, attentive, distant, can be reserved with strangers, but it can be gentle and affectionate with its family, and people whom it is willing to accept.
They originated from the Northern borders of Mali and Niger; the slopes of the Azawakh valley.
They were bred for the hunting of game (gazelles, hares, ostriches) and fights off predators (hyenas, jackals, lions). This dog is an important companion for the family life of the nomads and shares their camp life.
Particularly slim and elegant, the Azawakh sighthound gives a general impression of great slenderness. Its bone structure and muscles show through thin and dry skin. It is a slender dog whose body fits into a rectangle with a vertical long side. Azawakh are known for being intelligent, affectionate, and exceptionally loyal to their family members. They are still often independent in spirit, though. They are not a suitable breed for novice owners. Their unique personalities mean they can require a lot of additional training.
Their hunting instincts mean that they can have a high prey drive. Although they can get on well with cats and other animals, careful introductions should be made to ensure their chase instincts are not triggered.
The Azawakh is regarded as a generally healthy and robust breed. Given the rarity of this breed, though, means there is a small gene pool. You should find a breeder that carries out health tests on parents to minimize the chances of your puppy developing an inheritable condition. Some of the conditions this breed have been known for developing can include: Hypothyroidism, Epilepsy, Wobblers, IVDD, Auto-immune mediated diseases, Masticatory Muscle Myositis.

Affection With those they know, they are very affectionate.
Friendliness They vary from highly suspicious of new things and strangers to the rare exceptionof being friendly to everyone. It is their natural instinct to be suspicious and aloof with people they do not know, you cannot force an Azawakh to accept everyone, they choose who they accept and when they accept them.

JUDGING THE AZAWAKH
The first thing to remember is while the Azawakh is an elegant sighthound it is first and foremost a primitive guardian breed.
Most Azawakh do not want to be friends with strangers, it takes multiple introductions over an extended period of time for an Azawakh to accept a stranger IF they decide they even want to accept them into their usually small circle of “friends”. It is ingrained in the breed to be aloof and highly suspicious of stranger’s and their surroundings, especially foreign surroundings. What we westerners ask of them as show dogs, goes against everything ingrained in them. Their “job” is to protect the encampment, livestock and their people from 4 and 2 legged intruders.
Most Azawakh through a huge amount of conditioning, exposure and socializing will be, to an extent accepting of a respectful judge. This is a super short coated breed with flat muscling under dry skin – nothing can be hidden!
As a judge you really do not need to put your hands over every inch of the dog, a basic hand along the topline to the testicles (if male) or tail should be sufficient enough for you to be able to feel their fine coat, skin and muscle tone.
As you approach quietly, calmly and confidently speak directly to the handler, ignore the dog. Ask if the dog is OK to be touched, we really appreciate judges who ask and it also gives the dogs a second to see that you’re not a threat because their person is conversing with the stranger.
Please, please, please do not push yourself on an Azawakh that is not comfortable. NO amount of you trying to reassure an Azawakh by any means will help to reassure it, usually it makes them worse and could even be what ends their show career. So please do not talk to the dog or talk while going over it or pat it to reassure it. This usually has a very negative impact, and you will not see the dog at its best as it will want to avoid you at all costs afterwards. We won’t even mind if you don’t touch them (especially in Europe if you ever get the opportunity)

Cars on Main Oval at DRP
Members are reminded that no cars are to be driven or parked on the main oval at David Roche Park for any reason. This directive from Council includes all grassed areas inside the perimeter fencing and the concrete paths both inside and outside of the perimeter fencing.
The only vehicles permitted on the main oval are emergency vehicles or authorised vehicles.
Dogs SA spends a considerable amount of member’s funds to maintain the main oval to the highest standards for exhibitors to enjoy the best facilities in Australia and damage to the grassed surface or irrigation system caused by vehicles are very costly and time consuming to repair.
Please ensure all exhibitors abide by this directive.

19.13 “Finish” calls
19.13.1 The “Finish” call is used in Classes that contain multiple hides (Advanced, Excellent, Master and Ultimate) and is required to stop timing of the search.
19.13.2 The handler is required to call “Finish” when all hides have been located for the search area or, for Classes/Elements with an unknown number of hides, when the handler believes that all hides have been located or a “blank room’ cleared.
19.13.3 In the Advanced Class, if the handler fails to correctly call “Finish” within the maximum time allowed for the search or before leaving the search area precinct, the team will receive a Qualifying Fault and the maximum time allowed for that search.
19.13.4 In the Excellent Interior and the Master Classes, the number of hides in the search area is unknown. The handler must call “Finish” within the search time (including each area in multiple area searches). Failure to do so will incur a Non-Qualifying Fault.
22.3 Non-Qualifying Faults
22.3.1 The following actions are deemed to be Non-Qualifying Faults: (a) the maximum time for a search has been exceeded (d) in the Excellent, Master and Ultimate Classes, where the number of hides is unknown, the handler does not call “Finish” before the expiration of the search time

Neutered Register
To transfer to the Neutered Register please lodge your pedigree with the desexing certificate and the payment of $28.00
You are not eligible to compete in Class 18 or 18A until the transfer has been done.

FUTHERMORE, due to confusion sometimes arising over the correct calculation of a dog’s age into breed classes where the date of birth does not occur in the relevant month, the anniversary date is to be taken as the last date of that month, e.g. dogs born on the 31st January will be eligible to enter the Baby Puppy class on the 30th April
PLEASE CHECK THE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR DOGS
DOGS MUST BE ENTERED IN THE NAME OF THE OWNER/S ON THE PEDIGREE WHETHER THAT BE CONFORMATION OR TRIALS. ALL OWNERS OF THE DOG MUST BE FINANCIAL MEMBERS OF THEIR STATE CONTROLLING BODY.
CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS
Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)
As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:
1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.
2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)
3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.
4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.
5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)
(a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20)
(b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20)
(c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (11/21)
(d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20)
(e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20)
(f) A current veterinary certificate is defined as a certificate dated within three months prior to the mating. (11/21)
6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.
7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)
8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.
9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)
10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.
11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)
12. I shall ensure that every dog in every litter I breed will be registered as required in the SACA Rules. (07/22)

Except where the equipment is being utilised by the Affiliate for the conduct of an Exhibition, tents gazebos, crates, guy ropes or other equipment being used by the Exhibitor/s is not to be set up/extend within three metres (Conformation), five metres (Trials) of the judging precinct or within one metre of the concrete paths, except where the crates/trolleys are being used to restrain dogs during judging of the breed. Guy ropes are not to extend greater than 500mm from the extremity of the item they are securing and must be of a high visibility colour.
