President’s Report

July overall has been a slow down for much of our Association with conformation having a bit of a break. However, the sporting codes are getting into full swing in the cooler months with the Adelaide Lure Coursing & Racing Club conducting their ﬁrst Sprint Dog event which appeared to be very successful. The Labrador Retriever Club hosted their National Championship Show at DRP together with Restricted Obedience and Rally Trials and Retrieving Ability Tests.

Of signiﬁcant note was the great success of the Dogs SA Agility State team which ﬁnished second overall at the Agility Nationals which were held in Sydney. Very well done by the team consisting of Bevan and Duke, Barbara and Titan, Katie and Maddie, Michelle and Rogue, Jessica and Finn and Natalie and Aurora.

The summary of the Dogs Australia Special General Meeting held in June has been released and is available on the Dogs SA Website. There are rule changes in most of the disciplines so I would suggest all have a read of the summary and make yourselves aware of the changes.

Of note in the rule changes is the addition of a new title for Conformation dogs which will come into effect on 01 January 2025. The Regulation is in Part 5 –Conformation Shows and reads:

Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows

10.12 Sire and Dam of Merit (Effective 01 January 2025)

10.12.1 Sire of Merit (SOM) - A dog that has produced at least ten (10) Conformation Champion offspring.

10.12.2 Dam of Merit (DOM) - A bitch that has produced at least ﬁve (5) Conformation Champion offspring.

10.12.3 At least 1 of the conformation Champion titles (CH, GRCH, SUPCH, CIB, A2O) must have been awarded after the implementation date (01 January 2025).

August will see an increase in activity with the number of Conformation Shows being conducted and of course the sporting codes will be in full swing. With the sporting codes being so active it is an ideal opportunity for members, particularly conformation trainee judges, to view or participate in the other activities to see what most of our dogs are bred for, remember form and function is very important to the conformation ring.

The most important event on the August calendar is the commencement of the Adelaide Royal Show on 31 August and runs for 9 days. This is the event where we can show off the breeds and activities that are available to the general public. Be patient with the public as many are not fully aware of what can be done, so promote your breeds and activities. The Dogs SA stand will once again be in attendance and assistance will be required to staff the stand, please contact the ofﬁce for further details.

SUMMARY OF THE DOGS AUSTRALIA SPECIAL BOARD MEETING HELD VIA ZOOM VIDEO CONFERENCING ON 15 JUNE 2024

At the June 2024 ANKC Ltd Special Board meeting, Directors resolved/considered the following:

1. * ANKC Ltd/Canine Disc Australia Agreement

It was RESOLVED that the ANKC Ltd/Canine Disc Australia agreement be approved and to be effective from 1 January 2025.

2. * Dogs Australia Rules - Amendment

Amendments to the following rules have been endorsed and will be effective 1 January 2025. Rules for the Conduct of Sled Sport Events

3. * Canine Grooming Competitions

It was RESOLVED that Dogs Australia adopt the following in relation to Canine Grooming Competitions:

• Canine Grooming Judges Training Program.

• Requirements for appointing interim licensed judges and approving nominated licensed judges for the next two years in support of the Canine Grooming Judges Training Program.

• Dogs Australia Certiﬁcation Structure, exemptions and the associated beneﬁts.

• Recognition of Prior Learning in Dogs Australia Certiﬁcations and their associated beneﬁt. Effective from 1 July 2024.

4. * Rules for the Conduct of Scent Work Trials - Amendments

It was resolved that the Rules for the Scent Work Trials be amended as follows: Currently reads:

19.13 “Finish” calls

19.13.1 The “Finish” call is used in Classes that contain multiple hides (Advanced, Excellent, Master and Ultimate) and is required to stop timing of the search.

19.13.2 The handler is required to call “Finish” when all hides have been located for the search area or, for Classes/Elements with an unknown number of hides, when the handler believes that all hides have been located or a “blank room’ cleared.

19.13.3 In the Advanced Class, if the handler fails to correctly call “Finish” within the maximum time allowed for the search or before leaving the search area precinct, the team will receive a Qualifying Fault and the maximum time allowed for that search.

19.13.4 In the Excellent Interior and the Master Classes, the number of hides in the search area is unknown. The handler must call “Finish” within the search time (including each area in multiple area searches). Failure to do so will incur a Non-Qualifying Fault.

It was resolved that the following Dog Sports Qualifying Cards be amended to remove the requirement for a Judges signature: • Agility • Endurance • Obedience • Rally • Track & Search • Sled Sports Events

7. * Dogs Australia Judges Contract - Amendment

It was RESOLVED that the Dogs Australia Judges Contract be amended at Section Option 1 as follows: Currently reads:

8. * Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows - Amendment

It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows Section 9 relating to the conduct of CACIB Shows be amended to align with the current FCI regulations and to avoid confusion between CACIB events and our own regulations for the conduct of the Challenge Certiﬁcate.

8. * Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows - Amendment

It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows be amended with the inclusion of new Clause 10.2 pertaining to Sire and Dam of Merit:

6.1.3 No word that is in the nature of a known prefix or deceptively similar to a known prefix and no prefix except the breeders registered prefix may be used in a dog’s name unless the following conditions apply:

6.1.3.2 The registered name remains unaltered with a preposition - e.g. ‘of’, ‘to’, ‘from’, ‘with’, ‘at’, ‘is’, ‘by’ - added followed by the new owner’s prefix as a suffix. This new name after this point may not be furthered altered. In respect of dogs born in Australia, only dogs under one (1) year of age are eligible. Only one additional suffix may be added.

6.1.3.3 The consent in writing of all the o wners of the second preﬁx must be given.

6.1.3.4 In the case of an overseas Kennel Name being used, all the o wners must certify in writing that they are the owners of the Kennel Name and that it is registered with the appropriate overseas canine control. Be amended to read:

6.1.3.1 The prefix of the new owner is permitted to be added at time of registration or transfer but must be added as a suffix and will be in addition to the thirty (30) letters or spaces as specified in 6.1.2 provided the dog has not been awarded a Dogs Australia recognized title, been bred from or used at stud One prefix registered with Dogs Australia may be added as a suffix at time of registration or transfer provided the dog:(i) has not been awarded a Dogs Australia recognized title, and (ii) has not been bred from or used at stud, and (iii) is under one (1) year of age if born in Australia.

6.1.3.2 3 The consent in writing of the breeder and all owners of the suffix must be given. In the case of an overseas Kennel Name being used as a suffix, all owners of that suffix must certify in writing that they are the owners of the Kennel Name and that it is registered with the appropriate overseas canine control.

6.1.3.3 2 The original registered name as specified in 6.1.2 remains unaltered, with and a preposition (eg, ‘of’, ‘to’, ‘from’, ‘with’, ‘at’, ‘is’, ‘by’) added followed by the new owner’s prefix as a suffix is added to the original name. 2024 ADELAIDE ANIMAL EXPO

Well, it was another busy weekend for many of our members at the Adelaide Animal Expo.

Visitor numbers at our DOGS SA stand were again very high. It was good to see that there is still a strong interest in pure bred dogs.

I would like to thank the following for their assistance over the weekend and the presence of their dogs for the public to interact with. We had Joy Lim, Caroline Sheekey with her Irish Water Spaniels, Richard Chapman-Stephens and his Newfoundlands, Sharon Garrett with her Welsh Springer Spaniels, Rachael Fagan and her Aussie Shepherds and a cameo from Sandra Pilgrim and her whippet on Sunday afternoon.

As well as our DOGS SA stand, we were represented by another 16 stands set up by either Breed Clubs or individual breeders as well as one Kennel and Obedience Club. Without wanting to single out any particular participants, there were a number of standouts in relation to the time and effort put into their displays. Thank you everyone for your contributions. For next year’s event I might have to convince Council to put up a reward for the best stand(s). This year we again staged demonstrations in Agility, Dancing with Dogs and Scent

Work which all drew great interest from the crowds in attendance. Our ability to include Obedience was limited due to there being trials on both days, but hopefully we can add it to next year’s program. We also had our Grand Parade of Breeds, which was once again a highlight, accompanied by Caroline’s extensive and informative commentary. Many thanks to all those members who took part in these activities. We greatly appreciate your efforts.

A ﬁnal thank you to Rachael and Richard and those members who helped pack away the carpet tiles in the demonstration ring on Sunday afternoon. After a long weekend I was extremely grateful for your assistance. Cheers all, Brian Fielder

Attention Dogs Australia Conformation Judges

The following information has been received from the FCI Head Ofﬁce. Only FCI-NCO judges that appear in the FCI Judges Directory can judge at international FCI-CACIB shows i.e. judges that are NOT listed in FCI Judges Directory CANNOT be invited to FCI international shows; From 1st August 2024, Dogs Australia Judges who are not listed in the FCI Judges Directory may not be invited to judge at FCI International Shows. Even if, despite this directive, an FCI Country still invites you, and you accept, any awards you give including CACIB’s will not be recognised by the FCI Head Ofﬁce, which of course will not make the exhibitors happy.

Increasingly, the Dogs Australia Ofﬁce is receiving inquiries from overseas regarding Australia judges who do not appear on the FCI Judges List, we are sure this has resulted in a lot of proposed appointments not going ahead. Dogs Australia have 1,393 approved conformation judges, only 840 are on the FCI Judges list, if you wish to be placed on the list, complete the attached form and email it to: fcijudgeslist@dogsaustralia.org.au

Although Dogs Australia are an Associate Member of the FCI you cannot call yourself an FCI judge unless you are on the list.

AGILITY NEWS

Agility lovers from far and wide gathered on the June long weekend for the Dogs SA State Agility, Jumping and Games Championships 2024. The Championships were held at the Munno Para Obedience Dog Club grounds, Smithﬁeld, drawing a total of 1148 entries from 89 handlers across South Australia, Victoria and Australian Capital Territory. The Dogs SA Agility Advisory Committee were fortunate enough to have judges Rose Ince from South Australia, Lisa Kaddatz from Queensland and Emi Hinago and Frankie Aston both from New South Wales, who judged across all disciplines over the weekend and provided fun and challenging courses. Overall competitors received a whopping 204 qualiﬁcations! Congratulations to everyone on their achievements, even those that did not receive the passes they wanted but had some amazing moments in the ring with their dogs. There was an array of impressive skills and speed on show!

Saturday was games day with dogs competing in the gamblers, snooker and always fun strategic pairs classes. The games finals were held on Saturday afternoon with the AAC awarding the all heights state champions that evening. On Sunday and Monday dogs and handlers threw themselves into competition with agility and jumping classes. On Monday afternoon, the finals were kicked off with the all important (and very tear jerking) veterans runs; a great opportunity for the now retired dogs to return to the ring for a fun run with their favourite person. The bond between dog and handler that could not have been more evident than watching the veterans runs. The finals of agility and jumping followed this on Monday afternoon culminating in the AAC awarding the individual height champions for agility and jumping at the close of the event.

The event had some amazing sponsorship including: Laucke Mills, Surf Dog Australia, Accell Animal Therapy, The Pet Butcher, Therapetics Canine Conditioning and Mobility, Happy Dog Hydrotherapy, Petherton Park Boarding Kennels and Cattery, Tri-Paws Tug Toys and Melissa Simmons.
