Championships, ANKC Rules reviews, State Rule interpretations, End of Year awards and all matters pertaining the trialling in SA. Despite covid restrictions, most Advisories managed to schedule their State Championships. This year Council approved the Scent Work Advisory Committee to oversee the new activity of Scent Work.
COUNCIL REPORT 2021 ADMINISTRATION The ANKC Ltd Conference was held in October 2021 via zoom and was attended by the President Brian Parker and Marie Merchant with invited guest Cheryl Currie. Council approved various works at David Roche Park in 2021 which included the removal of the old evaporative air conditioners in the bar which were replaced by a ducted reverse cycle system. In addition, the rear double doors in the bar were replaced due to deterioration of the woodwork. The main oval irrigation system was upgraded with additional sprinklers installed. In 2021 the Investigations Committee dealt with numerous complaints and breaches of the SACA Rules. Two members of the Committee resigned during the year, Sue Foster and Annette Jones, and Council sincerely thanks Sue and Annette for their invaluable assistance during their time on the Investigations Committee. Council also recently approved the appointment of Ian Glen to the Committee. Council greatly appreciates the commitment, expertise and knowledge of the Investigation and Disciplinary Panel members who freely give their time to consider and adjudicate breaches of the Dogs SA Rules. The Conformation Judge’s Theory examinations were held in November at David Roche Park with 21 candidates participating and 14 being successful. Practical Examinations were held in December with 21 candidates participating and 13 being successful and as a result 2 candidates achieved All Breeds status. Congratulations to all successful candidates. Council extends a sincere thank you to the Conformation Judge’s Training Panel members who generously volunteer their time in co-ordinating Judge’s exams and to the Group Leaders for their ongoing support. Council also thanks the many members who assist by providing dogs for the practical examinations. The training scheme would not exist without the dedication of all involved. Council extends a sincere thankyou to the Trials Advisory Committee members for their extensive contribution in supporting their various trials activities. Trials Advisory Committees are responsible for State and National February 2022
Congratulations to the many and varied Trainee Trials Judges who successfully passed their theory and practical exams in 2021 and are now newly licenced or elevated Judges. Council extends a sincere thank you to all of those involved with the Trials Judge’s Training Panels in organising training days and theory and practical examinations. The 2021 Dogs SA Winter International, renamed the 2021 Winter Festival, was held with an FCI Show and two Championship Show with an Interstate Panel judging. Congratulations to the Committee for ongoing dedicated support which resulted in a very successful event despite difficult times in 2021. Sincere congratulations are extended to the dedicated DOTY POTY Committee, small in numbers but who managed to organised two very successful fundraiser Championship Shows in November with the main event held in December. This year included eligible entries from both 2020 and 2021 which necessitated the event to be held over two nights and included for the first time the NOTY event for neuters. The prizes on offer were magnificent and most appreciated by the winners. Lastly, but not certainly not least, Council and members sincerely thank Margaret Bush, who this year received a Queens Honour Award for services not only to Dogs SA for the past 22 years but other volunteer organisations recognising her efforts over the past 60 years or so. Margaret has managed the Dogs SA Canteen on show days for more than 20 years and not many realise the amount of work Margaret contributes behind the scenes ordering and collecting supplies, co-ordinating Club volunteers and ensuring the canteen complies with government health regulations Margaret’s dedication is appreciated by her many customers and Clubs working for commissions. The Hospitality Centre (including Bar) returned an excellent profit of $20k in 2021, in addition to the $17,480.00 returned to Clubs as commissions. At the Dogs SA Office, Georgia Reece commenced part time in June 2021 and is now appointed to Hayley Prior’s full time position following Hayley’s resignation effective 31st December 2021. I am sure all members will warmly welcome Georgia as a staff member and also appreciate Hayley’s contribution over the past 7 years. Page 7
OBEDIENCE ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2021
2021 has been an interesting year, coming out of the very disrupted Covid 2020 year. I would like to thank all that have contributed to things getting back to close to “normal” in 2021 including fellow Obedience Advisory Committee (OAC) members Brian Fielder and Peter Dynan and the support from the Dogs SA Council and staff. I also acknowledge the invaluable work done by Lynn Fielden for her work as Registrar and Julie Brown in maintaining our social media platforms of the website and Facebook page. The effort of all of our affiliate clubs and those that support then is critical to sustain our dog sports. To those clubs and their volunteers that delivered trials during the year – Thank you. To Ros Kumela and her willing pupils, thank you for working to build our judging panel. This year Karen Moralee has passed her Novice judges exams and is now able to judge from 2022, Ruth Visser has completed her theory exam and we look forward to her gaining her Novice licence in the new year. I look forward to more joining the judging ranks. Thanks to those who supported the Judges Training program though marking ampersand assessing practical exams. There will be a time, in the not too distant future, where the aging judging panel will decline quickly and there is a need to have an active panel to support trialling into the future. Thank you to those competitors who entered the State Championships to the SAODC for providing their grounds and facilities and their generous support. My special thanks go to Lynn Fielden and Shonna Wilson for their work in getting the Championships organised and supported. To this year’s award winners, congratulations on your achievement and the time and effort you have put into your success, I trust your dog has enjoyed it as much as you. The recent changes to the operations of the Dogs SA advisory committees places the decision who manages the obedience, rally and Endurance activities that support our disciplines squarely on to those that are involved in any capacity. The ability to have body that can advise, advocate and facilitate our disciplines is a decision you – will you volunteer to take and active role at the OAC level? There are a number of areas for further improving the support to clubs and competitors. A committee with a strong membership will be well placed to progress these tasks. Thanks for contributing to 2021 and I look forward to 2022 being a year of growth for our disciplines and for those who support and contribute to them. Neil MacDonald Chair
AGILITY ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2021
This is my first, and probably only report on behalf of the Agility Advisory Committee. I would like to thank the members of the Committee for welcoming me after my appointment late last year. It has been a privilege serving the Agility community and educational in some ways as well. 2021 has been an interesting year with its fair share of challenges. Nonetheless, we have managed to achieve quite a bit during the year. Obviously, the biggest challenge again came from the impacts of COVID, the most notable being the cancellation of the Royal Page 8
Show and the scheduled trials at Mt Gambier and the Riverland. While the loss of these trials was disappointing, particularly for the country clubs, losing the Royal also robbed us of our biggest opportunity to promote our discipline in the public arena. Our Agility competitions always attract very good crowds. I’m sure that we all hope that next year will see things back to normal. We began the year with the task of implementing the new ANKC Rules. Perhaps the major change has been the introduction of the new Elite class. Our Judges spent quite a bit of time trying to establish the best way of incorporating the new class and creating guidelines for course design. With significant input from Vanessa Loughlin in particular we came up with a document which analyses on course challenges progressively though all classes from Novice up to Elite. It is hoped that in the future this document will be a very useful guide in the training of new Judges. Another initiative during the year was the development of new, more detailed rules for Not For Competition classes. One of the first thing the Committee did at the start of the year was to formalise arrangements for equipment grants to clubs who run Agility trials. A grant of up to $1500 was made available for the purchase of new equipment or the upgrading of existing equipment. Although not all clubs have put in their claims yet, I’m sure more will be submitted before the end of the year. Feedback I have received indicates that these grants were very much appreciated. A highlight during the year was the return of our State Championship trials after their cancellation last year. The Committee put a lot of work into this event and the support from sponsors and competitors was very much appreciated. Although we couldn’t achieve our original aim of having an International Judge, we did manage to have two Judges from interstate, who were both very well received. The success of the event was in no small measure aided by the support of the Munno Para club and its members. On behalf of the Committee and competitors I would like to once again thank them for their support. I would also like to once again congratulate all of our State Champions in the various classes. One of the more pleasing duties the Committee has is the awarding of awards each year for our most successful competitors. The task of processing the results from all our trials and working out the winners is a big one. This year the Committee decided to try to streamline the process, beginning with a complete revision of the rules around the eligibility for the awards. Thanks to the efforts of Roz Short and Nadege Wauchope we now have a much simpler system for next year and into the future. While we are speaking of the Annual Awards, I would like to congratulate all the worthy winners for this year. You should be very proud of your efforts. Congratulations also to the teams who achieved their Agility Champion titles during the year. I believe that there were 5 Champion titles awarded this year, which is a great effort by all involved. Going into next year some of the initiatives the Committee are working on are reviewing criteria for the selection of teams for National trials and supporting the ongoing development of our Judges by subsidising the costs of on-line course design and training programs. I would like to thank all the members of this year’s Committee for their efforts this year. As well as Vanessa, Roz and Nadege, we also had Kerry Thomas, Chloe Dunlop and Jason Schultz on board. Kerry will not be continuing next year as she takes time
to deal with some health issues. Kerry’s input will be missed, particularly all the work she puts into her monthly articles for the DogsSA Journal. Thanks for all your efforts Kerry and best wishes going forward. Our clubs are the lifeblood of our discipline. From providing instruction for their members to putting on trials for our active competitors and everything in between they perform an extremely important function and fully deserve our appreciation and ongoing support. The Association’s office staff were again very helpful during the year. A big thank you to Ros for her help while she was with us and to Ann, Cheryl, Hayley and Georgia for your patience and assistance. Brian Fielder Chair, Agility Advisory Committee
DANCES WITH DOGS ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2021 Adaptation to COVID19 compliance regulations meant only a brief gap in South Australia’s DWD and Tricks programme. Thus, we have been able to continue with a very busy 2021 which saw rapid development of the new sport of Tricks Tests. This has grown in leaps and bounds. DWD COMPETITIONS and Tricks TESTS Total number for this period of reporting for DWD Competitions is 9, with 16 for Tricks Tests, including the State Championship in April. Entries for DWD Competitions this year averaged around the low-twenties. Average Entries for Tricks Tests is around mid-twenties per Test, with 41 entered in the State Championship: boosted by interstate entries. HANDLER TRAINING Currently Tricks training is being conducted by DWD, Para Districts, SAODC and Southern Districts Clubs. Tricks Classes commenced the year with a focus on Starter and Novice Levels, then gradually moved to include Intermediate and Advanced by mid this year. Lynne Stapleton and Elaine Kennedy have been providing lessons in the development of Tricks’ skills for handlers, assisted by Denise Adams and Irma Crews. Workshops were held in March, April, July and August. In addition, self-training for Judges has provided learning opportunities for handlers. It is pleasing to note a growth in the numbers attending DWD classes conducted by the DWD Club of SA and Gawler Dog Training Club. This has led to a small increase in the number of handlers entering Competitions, boosted by some new people entering the sport. JUDGES TRAINING Under the expert guidance of Jenny McLoughlin, two new Judges successfully gained their licences to Judge DWD this year. There is now a total of 14 DWD Judges in this State. The five Tricks Test Judges, Lynne Stapleton, Elaine Kennedy, Denise Adams, Irma Crews, Jenny McLoughlin and Julie Brown have conducted practical self-help training sessions across all Levels and have worked exceptionally hard to develop this sport, which is evidenced by the growing number of Tests and ever-increasing number of Entries. The first of two DWD Judges Training session this year was held in January. February 2022
In April 2021 a combined Training Session in both DWD and Tricks for Judges was conducted with three experienced, foundation judges from interstate. This was most beneficial for all attendees, especially in the developing sport of Tricks Tests. PROMOTION Two demonstrations organised by Jean Milnes of the DWD Club of SA at public venues and nursing-homes were cancelled, due to COVID. However, members of the general public and residents of Nursing Homes, were fortunate to be entertained by dogs doing Tricks and Dancing on six occasions. These demonstrations play a part in helping promote DogsSA to the general public. FUTURE Our two sports of DWD and Tricks have received tremendous support from many people within the fraternity which bodes well for future development. 2022 will see another busy year for DWD and it is anticipated that Tricks will continue to grow. In addition, the Rules Review for both these sports will commence next year. The new structure of operation for Advisory Committees has been accepted as practice by this Committee. I thank everyone who has given our two sports so much support this past 12 months. Too many to mention in this report. However, I would particularly like to thank my fellow AC members. Maryka Spurling-Janes for her diligence and hard work, Tegan Whalan for her depth of canine-world knowledge and reliability, Jo Murrell for her great help with keyboard and publication skills especially with the State Championship, Dan Mc Loughlin for his enormous effort managing the combined DWD and Tricks State Championship and Andi Sutherland for recently filling a casual vacancy. Margaret Bourn Chair, DWD Advisory Committee South Australia
EARTHDOG ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2021
INTRODUCTION Being an instinct based sport, Earthdog compliments Conformation with the sport’s ability to test and hone small Terriers and Dachshunds natural instincts. Although dogs on the Associate Register that are of Earthdog type can also compete, this breed restriction, combined with the sport being limited to the cooler months, as well as the need for a tunneled Test enclosure with its associated equipment, makes Earthdog one of the smaller ANKC sports offered by Dogs SA. As a result, while the Earthdog Advisory Committee undertakes the usual functions of an Advisory Committee it also holds Earthdog Tests. This facility is appreciated by the small Terriers and Dachshunds who are either not well suited, or are at somewhat of a disadvantage in most other dog sports. Due to the broad involvement by the Advisory Committee, this report addresses the sport as a whole within the State, highlighting Advisory Committee activities where appropriate. From the 2014 Season to the 2019 Season, the pattern of Tests Days and the number of Tests held was consistent. In each of those six seasons South Australia enjoyed over the Winter period of May to August, two Triple Test Days and four Double Test Days; resulting in fourteen Tests each year. Since 2016, two of the Double Test Days have been held by the Terrier Club of South Australia, with strong support from the Advisory Committee members. In 2020 no Tests were held due to COVID, but it was planned to Page 9
schedule the Advisory Committee with three Double Test Days and one Triple Test Day, and the Terrier Club with one Triple Test Day and one Double Test Day. This schedule of events would have maintained the established Season of six Test Days with fourteen Tests. In 2021 it was planned to hold one less Advisory Committee Test Day, but to have all Test days as Triple events. This would have resulted in five Test Days and fifteen Tests; an increase of one Test compared to previous Seasons. However, due to a COVID “lockdown”, one of the planned August Advisory Committee Test Days was cancelled. This resulted in the both the Advisory Committee and Terrier Club having two Triple Test Days each, giving the 2021 Season four Test Days with 12 Tests; two Tests less than usual. TESTS Earthdog has four classes; Instinct, Junior, Senior and Master and once Master is attained, then a dog can gain attempt to gain a Champion title. In these classes the dogs are tested on various aspects of going-to-ground and working the nonlive quarry. These classes have always been offered in South Australia. However, a Junior titled dog may also enter Strong Dog, where the dog must be able to go-to-ground and draw the non-live quarry out to be retrieved by the handler. This Strong Dog class is not offered in all states, or on a consistent basis. Strong Dog was first offered in South Australia in 2019. This class has proved to be extremely difficult for dogs to qualify and is subject to some proposed improvements in the current Rules Review. In 2019 there was good interest in Strongdog, especially for dogs who had already achieved Champion titles. However, due the difficulty in gaining qualifications, entries dropped considerably this year. Earthdog interest continues to be constant. The following statistics comparing the 2021 Season to 2019 Season give an overview of how the sport is progressing: • Breeds entered in 2021 covered Border, Jack Russel, Parson Russell, Tenterfield and West Highland White Terriers. In addition to the breeds entered in 2021, excluding Tenterfield Terriers, 2019 also had Australian Terriers and Miniature WireHaired Dachshunds; • Total entries per Test were up from 13 in 2019 to 15 in 2021, comprised of: Earthdog entries per Test increasing from 9 in 2019 to 14 in 2021; Strongdog entries per Test decreasing from 4 in 2019 to 1 in 2021; • The Earthdog Qualification rate average over 7 years is 34%, with 2021’s being 38%, an increase over the 28% achieved in 2019; & • The Strongdog Qualification rate averaged just 5% over 2 years, with 2021’s being 13%, an increase over the 4% achieved in 2019, albeit with very low entries this year. Charts showing the trends since 2014 are attached to this report. JUDGES Although we gained a new judge in Christine Koch for the 2020 Season, due to COVID there was no opportunity to judge. In 2021 we were able to contract four local judges but due to the risks associated with COVID, no interstate judges were contracted. No Trainee Judges applications have been received for 2023. To improve the number of entries it would be beneficial that the Page 10
SACA Rules were amended to allow Judges to compete under a substitute Judge. This ability is supported by the SACA Rules for some other sports. I plan to ask the Advisory Committee to consider this option and if the Committee agree a submission will be put to Council. RULES South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania made submissions for changes to the Earthdog Regulations during this year. These changes are still under consideration by the ANKC. It is expected that we will know the status of any changes well before the season commences in May 2022. If there are changes approved, the Advisory Committee will run a briefing for judges and any interested parties TRAINING & PROMOTION We held the usual “Come and Try” day just prior to the Season start in late April. Turn-out was good and some new dogs have joined the sport, particularly a few JRTs. The Committee are considering increasing the Training Days in 2022 to better set up dogs and their handlers for the Season. Earthdog demonstrations planned to take place in as part of Dogs SA’s 2021 “Festival of Dogs” was cancelled, due to COVID. FINANCE A detailed Financial Report has been distributed to the meeting. In summary, the surplus for 2021 is approximately $600, bringing the cumulative surplus for the Advisory Committee to approximately $4,500. Note that the actual Income and Expenses are low when compared to that budgeted, but this is due to an increase of one Terrier Club Test, with a corresponding decrease in an Advisory Committee Test, and the cancellation of an Advisory Committee Double Test Day due to COVID “lockdown”. CONCLUSION Thanks must be given to the existing Committee who have accepted nominations to stand again for Committee in 2022. The effort the Committee put in to support the sport, along with Judges, is very much appreciated and without which there would be no sport. Good luck to everyone and their Terriers and Dachshunds in 2022! Daniel McLoughlin Chair EAC
RAFT ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2021
If you had told me this time last year I would spend part of 2021 as the RAFT Advisory Chair almost 30 years after competing in my last trial I would have laughed at you, but here I am. I must thank the Retrieving community, both those that knew me and those who did not for accepting me into this position. It was actually lovely to catch up with some familiar faces. 2021 saw RAFT Advisory Committee go through many changes from the 2020 SGM with resignations from Graeme Allen, Allan Putterill and Lynette Lennell as Chair with only the Chair position being filled by the Dogs SA Council. The Dogs SA Council has now amended the Rules for all Advisories to give them more freedom to operate and choose their own chairs from within the discipline which we hope will ensure full committees for each discipline. Much like 2020 COVID took its toll once again causing the cancellation of the State Championships, though the Advisory

Committee held out as long as they could in hopes the borders would reopen to give us a judge and enough exhibitors to go ahead. Unfortunately a lack of restricted competitors and stakes combined with the border restrictions Lynne Webster was unable to finish her restricted judges training program and sit the practical exam. Consequently in 2022 there will be two people in the program, Lynne Webster in Restricted and now Ben Kradolfer who will commence his All Age judges training. I wish them both the best of luck. 2021 saw three dogs gain titles, congratulations to their owners. Lynette Lennell & Jet NRD Jeff Patrick & Ranger NRD Lynne Webster & Starzky RRD. With the cancellation of the State Championships the Novice Teams Event was moved to the date as the venue was already booked. This event was held on Sunday August 15th at Grand Cru. There were 10 competitors which equated to 4 teams with 2 competitors running twice. A $50 donation to the RFDS was made after the event by Rob Dolphin and Lynette Lennell. My biggest observations on returning to retrieving was the decline in numbers, both competitors and judges. The smaller a discipline is the more noticeable a decline in numbers becomes. 2022 needs to be a year of promotion, training days and a time for long term competitors to consider adding a judging hat to their repertoire before we reach the point some of our current judges retire. Back in the 90s John Kersley’s weekly classes held at Bonythan Park over summer certainly brought many newcomers the confidence to start to trial, perhaps an idea to consider. Thank you to the current panel Lynette Lennell, Carmel Nottle and Rob Dophin for your work during this year, Jessie Hughes and Lynne Webster for your guidance with the SGM and the office Cheryl Currie, Hayley Prior and Ann Farndell for being there to assist. I wish the incoming advisory committee the best of luck, and whilst I may be returning to my “normal life” running in triangles I am still happy to lend a hand if needed, and if I get back on council in 2022 be an advocate for retrieving and gundog sports. I may be gone but don’t forget me. Tracie Edwards 2021 Chairperson
TRACKING ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2021
Despite all the ongoing difficulties, caused mostly by Covid but some by weather, in 2021 both disciplines covered by this Advisory, had successful years. In the discipline of Tracking, three trials were able to be run and 14 titles were gained. (7 xTD, 3 x TDX and 4 TCH). All these were run by Tracking Dog Club of SA Inc. The dogs and handlers gaining their championship title were Neut Ch Dual Ch (T) Pampard Pheel The Phorce RN, a Dalmatian owned and handled by Julia Mills, T Ch Albajail Masquerade Doll UD RN, and O Ch T Ch Albajail Maidens Mist RN, Australian Shepherds both owned and handled by Ros Kumela and Dual Ch (T) Beachspots Renaissance RN TSDX, a Dalmatian owned and handled by Julia Mills. In the discipline of Track and Search, 6 trials were run, three by TDC of SA Inc., two by Rottweiler Club of SA Inc., and one by this Committee. This resulted in a bumper year with 47 titles gained (5 x TSD, 14 x TSDX, 15 x TS CH and 13 X TS Gr CH). The dogs and handlers gaining the TS Grand Champion title were TS Grand Ch Gumhaven Shine A Light RN TK.S TD HTM.I Page 12

Evans/ F Gollan and handled by Fran Gollan. In 2021 there were no new Judges approved in either discipline, however there are a number who are working towards getting ready for examinations in 2022. One judge Nid Watt is retiring from Judging. Thankyou Nid for your long service to both disciplines, Nid commenced judging in the mid 1990’s. We can never have too many Judges, so if you are interested particularly in Tracking and haven’t already made your interest known to me, please step forward soon, there are many things that can be learned out of Tracking season that Judges need to be able to do. Actually, Judging the dog and handler on a Track is only a small part of what is required. Thank you to both affiliates and all our currently licensed Judges for their continued assistance in training aspirants in the practical side Tracking & Track and Search judging. In 2023 there will be a review of the Rules for both the Tracking and Track and Search disciplines. The Advisory will be organizing a meeting for all interested Members of the Association around March 2022 to discuss any Rule changes and or additions plus rationale/reason, that may be put forward in South Australia. Submissions will be called for prior to this. The Advisory considers all suggestions and those deemed worthy will then be submitted to Dogs SA for approval and then to the ANKC (by end of June 2022) to be put on the Agenda for the Conference in March 2023. After decisions are made at this conference, all decision are sent back to each State to approve and ratify the changes, an updated Rule book is produced reflecting changes and additions, everything is checked, new Rule books are then released, and the additions/changes take effect from Jan 2024. Thank you to my Committee, secretary, Sheila Smith (even from a distance of many kilometres, for some of the season), Nid Watt, Ian Murrell and Karron Jordan. Nid has decided after many years of service on this Committee not to accept nomination for 2022, and we thank her for all her invaluable input and service for all this time. Thank you to all the Dogs SA office staff, particularly Ann Farndell, the helpfulness and excellent service by the Office cannot be faulted. Josie Miller (Chairperson Tracking Advisory)

Stories around the campfire with All Breeds Dog Judge, John Lewington Lake George New York 2007
I drove from Boston Massachusetts six hours to Lake George with my wife Sue and Gail and the late Albert Reading. Albert and I were Judging a two day all breed show in the picturesque town of Lake George in upstate New York. We checked into the motel about 3pm just in time for happy hour in the bar that overlooked the lake. Jimmy from the Bronx was the resident barman and set us up a tab as this is the way things are done in America. You don’t pay for each round of drinks - it is put on the tab and you pay when you leave. A great way to do business. Hot finger food was brought out and put on a table in the bar, all free, chicken wings, puff pastries and all sorts of goodies. Dennis Gallant, the show manager, had popped in to welcome us and had left a carton of Samual Adams beer for us at the reception. What a great start to our Judging assignment in New York State. The following morning, we were taken across the road to the convention centre which was the site for the show and no more than two 200m away across the car park. We spent a couple of days sightseeing and took in a boat trip on the 32mile long lake dotted with small islands with big houses on them. It was very a spectacular site. Happy hour at the motel had become a regular part of our day and we made sure we caught up with Jimmy the barman every day. It didn’t matter what we drank at the bar it all went on our tab. Sue was drinking strawberry daiquiris, Gail large serves of Baileys and Albert and I were giving the beer a nudge. The funny thing was every night when we paid our tab at the bar sometimes after a couple of hours drinking it was always the same amount when Jimmy gave us our bill. Jimmy would give us a big smile and say is twenty bucks okay and we would give him thirty dollars (a ten dollar tip) and he was happy. You can meet some funny people on your travels and funny things happen but sometimes it works in your favour. Jimmy was our barman of the year you don’t find many like him. From there we drove to Albany and flew to Milwaukee and were met by friends Mike and Charlene Dewald. The next morning, we drove three hours to lake Minocqua up near the Canadian border to stay in their holiday home on the lake. After a lovely meal that night we hit the sack about 2 am. Then the fun started, we were lying in bed and it started to move very slowly at first then got faster I jumped out of bed Sue was being thrown up and down all over the place she was shouting John what have you done when there was a knock on the door and in walked our hosts with remote controls for the orthopaedic bed. We had been set up. We were laughing so hard it was difficult to get to sleep after that but it was something we will never forget.
Scent Work News WRAP UP FROM SCENT WORK ADVISORY COMMITTEE INFORMATION SESSION On 8 January 2022, approximately 40 people eager to glean information, attended a COVID-safe outdoor session organised by the Scent Work Advisory Committee (SWAC) in relation to the introduction of this new dog sport into South Australia. Brian Fielder, the Chair of the SWAC, presented an overview of the current situation. As of January 2022, the 3 trainee judges have passed their theory exam with their practical exam to be held within the next month. By the time this article goes to press we will hopefully have 3 new scent work judges amongst the growing ranks of performance sport judges within the State! Narelle Medlicott and Sharon Gahan gave a rundown on the rules, specifically aimed at novice level, and Kate Lloyd gave a very informative “show and tell” session in relation to odours, hides, training aids, and different methods of training. The picture included with this article shows her table of goodies. Many questions were asked by those in attendance.
Going forward, the SWAC will be holding another mock trial on Saturday, 5 March 2022 as a final practice run, with our first official trial to be held on Saturday, 2 April 2022. At this stage, other trials are scheduled to be held during the year on 25 June and 1 October 2022. We are also hopeful of offering a workshop during the year. Keep your eye on the Scent Work SA Facebook page for future updates. The key to success for this growing sport is for affiliated clubs to get involved in training. Currently, most of the training is through private trainers. It is hoped that clubs will take up a role in expanding this to cater for what is sure to be a surge of interest in this rewarding sport. While we aren’t aware of clubs who have classes yet, we believe Noarlunga, Dover and Gawler are keen to provide offerings in due course. Attendees at the session were provided with a handout containing a list of resources, plus a copy of the rule book. If you aren’t a member of Scent Work SA on Facebook and would like a copy of the information provided to attendees, please send an email to scentworksa@outlook.com so that we can provide this to you.

OBEDIENCE & RALLY ANNUAL AWARDS The qualifying period will be from 1st October of one year to 30 September the following year. If the last trial in September and the first trial in October fall on the same weekend, i.e. 30 September and 1 October, both trials will count for the earlier trialling year. However this could change depending on future Covid 19 regulations. Results from all trials held in South Australia during this period will be eligible. Results from trials held interstate will not be eligible. Results from Restricted trials will count towards the Top Dog Awards, but not for the Top Obedience Dog or Top Rally Dog awards. To be eligible for the Country Dog awards the registered owner and the dog must NOT be domiciled closer than 100 kilometres by road from the Adelaide GPO. The registered owner must be a member of an affiliated Country based club and must nominate that club on their trial entry forms. A country member cannot be considered for a metropolitan award for an Obedience or Rally class even if they are members of a metropolitan based club. They are still eligible, however, to compete for the Top Obedience Dog and Top Rally Dog awards. If the owner/handler or a dog is found guilty at an Investigation hearing of a breach of SACA Rules during the qualifying period they will be ineligible for any award they may have otherwise been entitled to.
OBEDIENCE TOP OBEDIENCE DOG The Top Obedience Dog will be awarded to the dog that accumulates the highest number of points in the Open and Utility classes during the qualifying period. Only the best 13 results from each class for each dog will be counted. Points will be awarded on the basis of qualifications and placings gained as detailed below. Qualifications: Utility 30 points Open 20 points Placings: 1st 20 points 2nd 15 points 3rd 10 points. TOP COUNTRY OBEDIENCE DOG The Top Country Obedience Dog will be awarded to the Country dog which scores the most points in the Top Obedience Dog Award. TOP DOG AWARDS - OBEDIENCE To be eligible for these awards the dog must have gained the relevant title during the qualifying period. Qualifications gained in prior years will count, as long as the 3rd qualification was gained during the qualifying period. Top Dog awards will be offered in respect of the following classes: Community Companion Dog (CCD) Novice (CD), Utility Dog Excellent (UDX)
Open (CDX),
Utility (UD),
Points will be allocated as follows: Title points: Utility Dog Excellent 50 points Utility 40 points Open 30 points Novice 20 points Community Companion Dog 10 points Bonus points for placings gained will also be awarded on the same basis as detailed above for the Top Obedience Dog. The following formula will be used to determine the winning dogs. The total of the number of title and placing bonus points will be divided by the number of trials in the relevant class the dog competed in to gain its title. This will give an overall score. Page 22
For example, if a dog gains its Utility title with 1 first placing, 1 second placing and a third, and competed in 10 trials to achieve its 3 qualifications, its score would be: Utility title points Placing bonus points (20+15+10) Total Divide by 10 (the total number of trials entered)
50 points 45 points 95 points 9.5 overall score
The dog with the highest overall score in each class will be the Top Dog for that class. Tied Scores In the event of tied scores in a particular class, the number of points awarded by the Judges in three qualifying trials will be added together and the dog with the highest total will be the winner. If there is still a tie then multiple awards will be presented.
RALLY TOP RALLY DOG The Top Rally Dog award will go to the dog that accumulates the highest number of points in the Master, Excellent and Advanced classes during the qualifying period. Only the best 7 results from each class for each dog will be counted. Points will be awarded on the basis of qualifications and placings gained as detailed below. Qualifications:
Master Excellent Advanced
30 points 20 points 10 points
Placings:
1st 2nd 3rd
20 points 15 points 10 points.
TOP COUNTRY RALLY DOG The Top Country Rally Dog will be awarded to the Country dog which scores the most points in the Top Rally Dog Award. TOP DOG AWARDS - RALLY To be eligible for these awards the dog must have gained the relevant title during the qualifying period. Qualifications gained in prior years will count, as long as the final qualification was gained during the qualifying period. Top Dog awards will be offered in respect of the following classes: Rally Novice (RN), Rally Advanced (RA), Rally Excellent (RE), Rally Master (RM). Points will be allocated as follows: Title points: Rally Master Rally Excellent Rally Advanced Rally Novice
40 points 30 points 20 points 10 points
Bonus points for placings gained will also be awarded on the same basis as detailed above for the Top Rally Dog. The following formula will be used to determine the winning dogs. The total of the number of title and placing bonus points will be divided by the number of trials in the relevant class the dog competed in to gain its title. This will give an overall score. For example, if a dog gains its Rally Excellent title with 1 first placing, 1 second placing and a third, and competed in 10 trials to achieve its 5 qualifications, its score would be: Rally Excellent title points 30 points Placing bonus points (20+15+10) 45 points Total 75 points Divide by 10 (the total number of trials entered) 7.5 overall score The dog with the highest overall score in each class will be the Top Dog for that class. Tied Scores In the event of tied scores in a particular class, the number of points awarded by the Judges in three qualifying trials will be added together and the dog with the highest total will be the winner. If there is still a tie then multiple awards will be presented. PLEASE NOTE: To assist in accurate recording of results, it is essential that ALL competitors correctly enter the dog’s name (including all titles) on their entry forms. Clubs are asked to ensure that these titles and the club represented by the competitor are entered into trial catalogues. Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the chair of the Obedience Advisory Committee at neil@nmac.com.au. February 2022

A HEAD START ON AN ACTIVE FUTURE
Fuel their growth and their play Eukanuba™ puppy diets contain concentrated energy and optimized fat and carbohydrate levels to help fuel growth and play. At weaning energy required for growth is at 50%, however when this growth plateaus energy required for growth drops down to 8-10%. Our goal with puppies is not to maximise their growth and weight gain but to ensure they grow at the right pace. Different size puppies have different metabolic growth rates, for example, a smaller breed puppy has a quicker metabolic growth rate and so this must be represented in their diets. As fat supplies more energy per gram than protein and carbohydrate, Eukanuba™ puppy diets have a high calorie density and are a great source of: • Essential fatty acids • A concentrated form of energy • Carrier for fat soluble vitamins

AGILITY NEWS SA State Team Selection for National Agility Championships – Adult Competition As competitors may be aware, each Agility National Championship holds a State Team Competition. Each state selects five dog and handler teams, and one Reserve team, to run over both an agility and jumping course. The winning State Team is decided by the combination of total faults accumulated by each team. The South Australian State Team will be determined by competitors who best meet the criteria outlined in this document. The criteria include self-nomination for consideration, an intention to travel to the Nationals, results from the previous trialling year, and a good standing within the SA Agility community (refer to point 6 below). Selection based upon trial results has been chosen as one of the selection criteria as it best demonstrates ability and consistency. The dog and handler combinations with the top five best results will be awarded a place on the SA State Team. The dog and handler combination with the sixth best result will be awarded the Reserve position. If one of the dog and handler combinations in the State Team is unable to compete on the day of the National competition, the Reserve dog and handler will step into their place on the team. Selection Criteria: 1. Handlers must reside within South Australia, and be financial members of Dogs SA. Dogs must be registered with Dogs SA. Any co-owners of the dog must also be a financial member of an ANKC-affiliated State Body. 2. The dog must be competing in Excellent or Masters in both Jumping and Agility (i.e. must have a JD and AD ANKC title at minimum). 3. Dog and handler combinations must self-nominate to be considered for a position on the State Team. Self-nomination can be completed by emailing the Agility Advisory Committee (AAC) Secretary by [insert date here] at the following address: secretary@agilitysa.net February 2022
4. Dog and handler combinations must be intending on travelling to the Nationals competition. 5. Runs from the previous trialling year will be scored according to the process detailed in the ‘Scoring’ section below. 6. If the owner/handler or a dog is found guilty at an Investigation hearing of a breach of Dogs SA Rules during the qualifying period, they will be ineligible for consideration. Scoring Results from the trialling year prior to the Nationals date will be scored, with team selection points given in the following priority order: 1. Double Qualifications (i.e. a qualification in both agility and jumping in the same trial, excluding Opens) – 10 points each 2. Single Elite Agility Qualifications – 4 points each 3. Single Elite Jumping Qualifications – 3 points each 4. Single Masters Agility Qualifications – 3 points each 5. Single Masters Jumping Qualifications – 2 points each 6. Single Excellent Agility Qualifications – 2 points each 7. Single Excellent Jumping Qualifications – 1 point each Using these rules, each dog and handler combination’s results will be considered. The five combinations with the highest number of points will be chosen to comprise the State Team, and the dog and handler combination with the sixth best result will be selected as the Reserve team member. In the event of a tied result, the dogs’ course time will also be compared against the SCT for each qualification. The dog that scores the faster times will be granted the team or reserve placing. For example, an ADM clear round: Score = (SCT subtract Course time) e.g. SCT 60s, Course Time 46.65s. Score 13.35. Please note: Points will be tallied by the AAC and taken from results provided by each club to Dogs SA. For further information, clarification, or to register a selfnomination, please contact the AAC Secretary at secretary@ agilitysa.net Dogs SA Agility Advisory Committee (AAC) Page 31
