June was a very busy month for myself with many representations and meetings to attend. The most important meeting of these to all members was to discuss the Draft Dog and Cat Management Amendment Bill 2024. This bill can have serious repercussions on our members and our hobby and sport as a whole. As we have previously published the Dogs SA response to the bill I will not dwell on it further. The Executive Officer and I were afforded a meeting with the Deputy Premier’s Executive Director and her staff to outline our concerns with the bill. The meeting was very positive with plenty of notes taken and appeared genuinely interested in our concerns. I would encourage all member to seek a meeting with their local member to discuss the concerns and to try and gain their support in opposing the bill.
The start of the month saw the Dogs SA Blackhawk Winter International event take place. This is the largest dog show in SA and is held over 4 days with almost 6,000 entries between the 4 Championship shows and specialty support shows. Although there were some headaches, the event as a whole was very positive and a credit to all those involved in the management. It is no wonder the event has been awarded Australia’s Favorite Show for the last 4 years, let’s go for 5.
During the month I attended the German Shepherd Club of SA as the SACA Representative on the Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend. It was great to see so many German Shepherd Dogs on show and also to see a number of Group 5 trainee judges attending. On the Monday I attended the State Agility Championships at the Munno Para Dog Club’s grounds. Although I could not spend too much time due to puppy duties at home, what I saw was very promising with a very well-run event and the competitors being very supportive of each other. Well done to the Agility Advisory Committee for putting on such a good event.
The following weekend I attended the Dogs Australia meeting where several matters were discussed and resolved. Although I can not elaborate on those at this time as the minutes have not been confirmed, once this is done a summary of the meeting will be released by Dogs Australia.
This weekend also saw the Conformation Judges Training Panel conduct the practical training day at David Roche Park. It was good to see so many members bring dogs for the trainees to go over to gain practical experience - although I would like to believe they come for the sausage sizzle I cook for them. The Dogs SA Scent Work Advisory also conducted Scent Work Trials which were attended by over 100 competitors including interstate competitors.
Dogs Australia has also provided a response to the Commonwealth Government’s Australian Animal Strategy Review Program which is due to close at the end of June. Dogs Australia previously held a position on the Advisory and we are supporting that to continue as a major stakeholder.
I must admit I am hoping for quieter July but it is not looking that way at the moment. Please if you have any issues or concerns, please feel free to discuss them with either myself or any other elected Councilor. It distresses me somewhat to see posts on Face Book about members complaining about their Boards or not being informed. I have always attempted to have an open council and intend to stay that way.

Effective 1st June 2025 that all Affiliates be restricted to clusters of 4 Championship Shows in a weekend (with the exception of Mount Gambier and Port Pirie at Easter) unless approved by the Executive Officer.

If an event is cancelled with less than 6 months’ notice to the Dogs SA Office, there will be no refund of show and / or trial booking fees.

Australian Shepherd
Health
Contrary to their name, the Australian Shepherd, as a breed, was developed in America, but their early ancestors can be traced back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, where it is believed that the Basque shepherds arrived from Australia with large bands of sheep and with them, their ‘little blue dogs with bob tails’.
The Australian Shepherd Club of America was established in 1957, but the breed was not officially recognised by the American Kennel Club until 1991. Australian Shepherds were reintroduced into Australia in 1990. On the 1st of January 1994 the Australian Shepherd was officially recognised by the Australian National Kennel Council, and it is now one of the largest breeds in the working dog group.
About the Breed
Australian Shepherds are a medium sized breed with the preferred height for females ranging between 45.5 - 53.5cm and for males 51 - 58.5cm, however quality is not to be sacrificed in favour of size.
Everything about the Aussie is to be ‘moderate’ including their double coat. Acceptable colours are Blue Merle, Black, Red Merle and Red. With the addition of white or copper/tan trim the solid colours are known as Bi coloured, and with the addition of both white and Copper/Tan trim they are known as Tri coloured. Most Aussies only need grooming on a weekly basis, but this will most likely increase at times of seasonal shedding.
Eyes are almond shaped, and colour can be brown, blue, amber or any combination thereof. Aussies can be found with two eyes of the same colour, each of a different colour, or a mixture or marbling of colours within each eye. Ears are triangular and have lift, creating the proper attentiveness. Intelligent, alert and eager.
A naturally bobbed tail is an identifying breed characteristic, often appearing anywhere from a very short bob all the way through to a fulllength tail.
The Australian Shepherd is an intelligent working dog of strong herding and guarding instincts. He is loyal companion and has the stamina to work all day. The variety and individuality in colour are unique to the breed.
Australian Shepherds are intelligent and active dogs with a good disposition and strong herding and guarding instincts. They can be reserved with strangers but should never be aggressive or fearful and should be well socialised as young pups to ensure a happy, well balanced, adult dog.
The Australian Shepherd is generally a very healthy breed and most live to between 12-15 years, but of course there are always exceptions to the rule. Most breeders do extensive health testing to ensure the breed remains as healthy as possible for generations to come.
Some of the main concerns in Aussies are Hereditary Cataracts (HSF4) and all owners need to be aware of the sensitivities of the Multi Drug Resistance (MDR1) mutation. Hip and Elbow scoring is widely conducted, the breed average is 9, which continues to gradually lower. Extensive research is being conducted through the Australian Shepherd Health and Genetics Institute in the US, which helps breeders monitor and assess for where and what they need to be health testing. The Institute also offer guidance for those that do not currently have tests available. While the Australian Shepherd is a working breed and loves nothing more than to be given a job to do, they are still able to settle into normal suburban life. Most Aussies need mental stimulation and if both their physical and mental needs are met, they can be a wonderful family addition. If their needs are not met, they can be destructive like any breed. Of course, there is the odd couch potato for the more laid-back family, however a good breeder will have a good idea of drive levels of each pup, which can vary within a litter.
Aussies make excellent dog sport candidates and with their high intelligence and willingness to please, are extremely fast learners. Aussies excel in Obedience, Rally O, Agility, Flyball, Dancing with Dogs and of course most are found to be excellent in the herding arena, should they be given the opportunity to do what they were actually bred for. In fact, there is not much an Aussie can’t do.

Cutting back on Showing does not meanthat you stop participating in the Dog World.
Stewarding is a great way to be involved, as often or little as you want to be without the expense.

DOGS MUST BE ENTERED IN THE NAME OF THE OWNER/S ON THE PEDIGREE WHETHER THAT BE CONFORMATION OR TRIALS.
ALL OWNERS OF THE DOG MUST BE FINANCIAL MEMBERS OF THEIR STATE CONTROLLING BODY.
CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS
Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)
As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:
1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.
2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)
3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.
4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.
5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)
(a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20)
(b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20)
(c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (11/21)
(d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20)
(e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20)
(f) A current veterinary certificate is defined as a certificate dated within three months prior to the mating. (11/21)
6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.
7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)
8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.
9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)
10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.
11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)

Clubs interested in gaining commission by working in the Dogs SA Canteen on All Breeds Championship Show days are invited to contact the Canteen Manager, Margaret Bush on 0447 478 371 to arrange suitable dates.
Clubs must provide at least five people with three preparing food and serving in the canteen and two cooking and serving the BBQ.
It is possible for 2 Clubs to work together to provide enough volunteers.

• Any person who intends to take photographs on the grounds for renumeration must supply proof of Public Liability Insurance to the Dogs SA Office
• Any person who intends to have a site on the grounds for either displaying and or the taking of photographs for sale, must pay the appropriate site fee
• Clubs who engage a photographer to take photographs on their behalf, have the right to make the photographer exclusive for their event. No other commercial photographers are then permitted to operate during that Club event/s.
