President’s Report

In October DOGS SA hosted the 2019 Dog and Puppy of the Year at David Roche Park. By all accounts the night went very well. Congratulations to the Committee for a well organised event and congratulations to the winners - Dog of the Year is the Afghan Hound, SUP CH SULIMAN Poetic Justice owned by Kerry, Kerin and Rachel Hutchings and runner up the Chihuahua, SUP CH VONCRONAN DIAMOND THIEF owned by Kylie Tilley, Tina Sunman, John & Annabel Gunn. Puppy of the year was the Border Collie, NAHROF CHAMPAGNE ON ICE owned by Kaye Hanson, runner up puppy was the Pug, CH KEATON DAARKLING owned by Eric Soti and Wolfgang Schnitzer. Well done to all those that qualified and to all those who came out to support the event. Royal Hobart Show also hosted the National Final of the Australian Junior Handler competition. South Australia was represented by Darcy Clarke who although not successful did not let us down and performed admirably with both his own dog and the swap dog. The final was won by Hollie Mann from Victoria with runner up Taylah Rattray from NSW. We all wish Hollie the best at Crufts in 2020 where she will be representing Australia. As many have now seen, Australian Dog Show Scene Pty Ltd (ADSS) has commenced scheduling shows in South Australia. Councillors have received both good and poor comments re the decision to allow a company to operate shows. The decision was not taken lightly and was brought about by the number of vacant weekends in the calendar which members were complaining about. Whether the concept will work or not is up to the proprietors of the company but all I ask is to go into this period with an open mind and see what transpires. On the weekend of 19/20 October the Executive Officer and I attended the Annual October Conference of the ANKC Ltd. As the minutes of the meeting have not been ratified at this time I cannot divulge the details of the decisions made, however there were some healthy discussions. Once the minutes have been ratified a summary will be provided and uploaded to the DOGS SA website and Journal. If you have any questions on the ANKC Ltd meeting please feel free to contact either the EO or myself. Just a reminder that on Wednesday 13 November 2019, there is a meeting being held at David Roche Park to discuss DNA parentage proving of pedigree dogs. The meeting is purely for parentage and is not for health testing which is vastly different. All DOGS SA members are encouraged to attend and have their say. This is a General Meeting of the members so there is no agenda and no motions will be accepted on the night. November and December are very busy months for DOGS SA with a number of Club and Advisory Committee Annual General Meetings being conducted. I do try to get to as many as I can and answer questions of the members and the committees. If there are any specific questions you would like answered or Council representation please put all requests through the office. CODE OF ETHICS CHANGES FROM 2020 Effective 01 January 2020 the following important changes to the Code of Ethics come into force: PART XV CODES A. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS 5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime. (01/20) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20) Definition of “Whelping” – Giving birth to one or more puppies. (01/20)

“IVY” Sire - Westrova Stoic Ironbark x Dam - Ch Rockport Bitchin Boudicca There is not enough words to say how extremely proud I am of my pocket rocket “IVY”. IVY did three years of Weight Pull at Paracombe, which was held by the South Australian Sled Dog Club. IVY continued with Weight Pull from 2017 with SHAM (Siberian Husky Alaskan Malamute Club of SA Inc) as ANKC Titles were now available. IVY loved it, excelled each and every time. Her personal best weight pulled is 503kg. IVY is the first Staffordshire Bull Terrier in South Australia, to gain the WWPD (Working Weight Pull Dog), and now the first Staffordshire Bull Terrier in AUSTRALIA to gain the WWPDX (Working Weight Pull Dog Excellence) title. AGILITY, JUMPING, SNOOKER, GAMBLERS, STRATEGIC PAIRS, HERDING, RETRIEVING, FIELD, OBEDIENCE, ENDURANCE, TRACKING, EARTHDOG, DANCES WITH DOGS, LURE COURSING AND SLED SPORT BECOMING A JUDGE J TRACK & SEARCH – Refer to ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 3E (b) Track & Search Trial Judges Training Scheme 1. Eligibility – Refer to ANKC Ltd Regulation 3: 3.1.5 To be eligible to apply for a Track & Search Dog Judging Licence, the applicant must have personally trained and trialled a dog to a Track & Search Dog Excellent Title. (01/20) 2. Practical Assessment – Refer to ANKC Ltd Regulation 8 In addition to the Track& Search Dog Assessors Panel an independent Referee will be appointed by the Tracking Advisory Committee. The assessing Panel will carry out the practical assessments and the fourth appointed person shall act as the Referee only. At the conclusion of each part of the assessment the Referee has the authority to collect the assessments from the assessing Judges and advise the Aspirant of a pass or fail for that part of the examination. The Referee must not indicate the exact result of the assessment. If an Aspirant fails a part of the examination the remaining part/s of the examination will not be conducted. (01/20) PART XIV

PART XV CODES C. CODE OF CONDUCT FOR EXHIBITORS Dogs SA Exhibitors Code of Conduct (01/20) 1. By entering an Exhibition, all exhibitors acknowledge that they will do their utmost to comply with this Code of Conduct. 2. Exhibitors shall at all times and in all communications, including electronic media; (a) Be familiar with and commit to abide by ANKC Ltd and Member Body rules and regulations, and the rules covering the Exhibition both in word and in spirit. (b) Consider the health and welfare of their dog(s) to be of prime importance. (c) Consider the health and welfare of other peoplesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; dogs as if they were their own and not commit or allow their dog(s) to commit any act that may put other people or their dogs at risk. (d) Commit to fair play, sportsmanship, honesty and integrity within a competitive spirit and display good grace whether successful or otherwise. (e) Commit to being civil and courteous at all times to other exhibitors, Judges, the Exhibition management, stewards and other officials. (f) Commit to having control over their dogs at all times. (g) Be respectful of decisions taken by judges and the Exhibition Manager and refrain from open displays of dissent. (h) Respect constructive criticism of the performance or behaviour of themselves or their dogs. (i) Be respectful and constructive should they feel the need to comment on aspects of the running of an Exhibition, decisions made by Judges, or the performance or behaviour of another exhibitor or their dog. (j) Be respectful and constructive should they feel the need to comment on a dog entered in the Exhibition by another exhibitor. (k) Do nothing to adversely affect the impartiality of the Exhibition management or judges at the Exhibition. (l) Take responsibility for the actions and behaviour of their dog(s), family members or guests whom they invite into the precincts of the Exhibition. (m) Be welcoming and encouraging towards newcomers to the sport and assist them in understanding both the letter of and the spirit of the rules and the code of conduct for exhibitors. (n) Ensure that they have trained their dog(s) to a standard that will give them every chance to compete safely and successfully. 3. The use of threatening, abusive or aggressive language or behaviour towards any other person attending an Exhibition, including but not limited to, judges, exhibition officials, other exhibitors or visitors will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Breaches of the Code of Conduct 4. Any competitor who witnesses a breach of this Code of Conduct is encouraged to report the matter to the SACA Representative at the earliest possible time. (01/20) APPENDICES RULES FOR NOT FOR COMPETITION OBEDIENCE AND RALLY CLASSES This is a non-qualifying class for dogs who have gained a Community Companion Dog or Novice Obedience title or a Novice Rally title. Dogs may be entered in any class up to and including the highest title gained by the dog but shall not enter a higher class at the same trial. The class will be judged in accordance with the normal ANKC Rules and procedures for that class. (01/20)

THE DOGS SA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RETRIEVING TRIAL FOR GUNDOGS Held in the Riverland on 17th & 18th August and judged by Eleanor Johnson (WA).

1st place John Stott’s Labrador Retriever Bitch, GR RT CH KADNOOK DREAMS EDGE with 311 points and awarded a Diploma Of Merit. Sedge finished 60 points in front of the 2nd placed dog, a worthy winner of the Championship and was also winner of the Highest Scoring Labrador Retriever Trophy. 2nd place Greg Playdon/Anna Malinin’s Labrador Retriever Dog, ADDERSLOT DIGGER RRD with 251 points. 3rd place Rick and Judy Johnston’s RT CH INKALINE PHOEBE German Shorthaired Pointer Bitch, with 249 points. Em was also the winner of the Highest Scoring GSP Trophy. 4th place to Greg Playdon/Anna Malinin’s Labrador Retriever Dog, NAT RT CH GR RT CH ADDERSLOT CARBO with 192 points. All of the placed dogs were from Victoria. No other dogs finished the Trial. Highest Scoring South Australian resident dog and handler were Ray Ashenden’s Labrador Retriever Dog, RT CH NATIVERUN ANGUS who unfortunately missed out on the last run. Please ensure that you are conversant with the Rules of Dogs SA and the ANKC Ltd prior to entering/competing in any sanctioned event. In SA it is the breeder/owner responsibility to transfer ownership of a dog within 14 days, not necessarily so interstate. TRICK DOG TESTS A new sport for dogs in Australia commencing, 1st January, 2020.

Trick dog Tests encourage handlers to teach their dog skills and behaviours in a positive and fun manner. Training for these Tests leads to improved communication and interaction, thus increasing the bond between handler and dog. This sport grew out of a need for handlers to learn to develop a variety of moves, behaviours and actions similar to Dances with Dogs: and it is anticipated that they will move through this sport on to DWD. There are four Levels of Titling Classes – Starters, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced, with the number of Tricks to choose from ranging respectively from 15 (Starters), 20 (Novice), 20 (Intermediate), 25 (Advanced). The number of Tricks ‘passed’ for which Qualifying Certificate Scores can be achieved are: 6,8,8,10 respectively, with Total minimum Scores for a Pass ranging 45, 60, 65, 85. There is also a rule for the minimum number of judges under which these scores are to be achieved.
