Guy Sebastian arrived at our cover photo shoot in Windsor, carrying his guitar case as though a road trip beckoned. While photographer Julian Kingma set up, Sebastian gently thumbed a tune, waiting in position, setting a relaxed scene at what would otherwise be a very busy production. He didn’t change clothes and was shot in what he arrived in, low-key and humble. It befits his attitude to life. In this week’s feature, Sebastian – soon on tour – opens up about the impact of fatherhood, the death of a close friend, his shift in priorities and a new mantra: make a greater impact on a few. ●

DEVELOPMENTS
FIRST PERSON
“ I am Tim Manger ” … and I’m a wedding celebrant with a twist I used to work in the corporate world, in IT training, so I was always in front of audiences. In my other life I’m also a professional pianist. I realised I could talk to audiences very comfortably, and I became a master of ceremonies as well. I worked in the wedding industry extensively and made a lot of friends. People said, ‘Hey, you know the industry needs more quirky celebrants – have you considered sidestepping from being a master of ceremonies, getting your qualifications and becoming a celebrant?’ So I went from the wedding reception room into the chapel, and took all my funny dad jokes with me. I’ve been a celebrant now for more than eight years and I’ve done more than 700 weddings. I don’t do boring weddings. People who want a boring celebrant won’t talk to me. I get knocked back a lot ... there’s kind of a mutual weeding out. The first nude wedding I did was at a nudist colony. The interesting thing was they didn’t tell me initially that it was a nude wedding. They didn’t even give me the location, so I followed them down all these dirt roads. I’ve been asked to do all sorts of stuff. Some of the characters I do are Darth Vader – the whole voicebox and everything – Spider-Man and the Grim Reaper, usually at Halloween. I also do Elvis. For the week leading up to the wedding, I talk like Elvis the whole week and I listen to Elvis music and watch Elvis interviews until I sound like him. I appeared on the second series of Married at First Sight. I imagine there are some celebrants that are horrified by that sort of thing. But the ceremony was quite authentic, quite real ... the only thing about it, of course, is they’re not actually married. You see everything at weddings. I’ve seen a groom run away, people faint, brides that haven’t turned up. I had a wedding couple that were taken away by the police at the end of the ceremony. They just got straight in the divvy van. I guess what I really love about what I do is that I can be incredibly quirky; incredibly extroverted, yet still work for one of the most conservative departments in government, which is the AttorneyGeneral’s Department. ●

e’s sung for Oprah at the Sydney Opera House, played cricket with former prime minister John Howard and has been awarded an Order of Australia medal. Guy Sebastian is one of Australia’s most loved singer/songwriters, who came to attention as the first season winner of Australian Idol in 2003, and after 16 years in the spotlight, he’s changing the way he handles his fame and fortune. “I’ve gotten better at prioritising,” says Sebastian, 37, as he arrives for our cover shoot and interview at Galah bar in Windsor. “I’ve also learnt you can’t be everything to everybody, it’s more important to have greater impact on a few.” For someone who has achieved nine top 10 albums, been nominated for 28 ARIA Awards and spends the bulk of his time on the road touring in between album releases, Sebastian is happy to refuse hectic schedules and puts his family first. Sure, he was a mentor on Channel Nine’s The Voice but that was filmed a stone’s throw from his Sydney home, which suited him fine. With a new album due for release this year,

Even with a tour and new music, pop favourite and family man Guy Sebastian has found a natural balance. there are two singles to keep fans anticipating more; Choir and Before I Go, both songs hinting at the neosoul and pop groove to come. He married his childhood sweetheart Jules Egan in 2008 and keeps busy raising their young sons – Hudson, 7, and Archie, 5. He’s also just finished the final touches on his home recording studio in Sydney’s beachside Maroubra, which means you’ll find him playing drums at 3am if the mood takes him. “There’s no denying I have spread myself a little thin over the years, but I’m ready to live life a little differently now,” Sebastian says of his rise to stardom and back to reality. “I sold my place in LA not that long ago, and I’m just focusing on being with family. There was a time I was chasing a different sound, doing things because I was advised to do it certain ways. I’m done with that.” There aren’t many celebrities willing to indulge an interviewer in their life’s challenges, but Sebastian openly invites the discussion. In fact, an hour with Sebastian feels more like a therapy session than it does an interview. “I don’t have that many close friends,” he says calmly. “But I do know I want to be there for them at the special moments, from turning up with a trailer to move rubbish or help them move house.” You get a sense that life got hectic for Sebastian and you can’t help but feel there’s a quiet hankering for some normalcy. “You get stuck in the rut of being the one everyone is prioritising and that’s not reality. I’ve had to check myself and now recognise when I’m disconnecting from reality,” he says. He grew up in a religious home and was guided by the Pentecostal
Church movement, singing with family and friends – even meeting his wife at the age of 12 singing in the same Adelaide church. He’s discovered a love for golf and makes sure to schedule a three-hour session to unwind. He’s learnt the art of slowing down – in spirit and mind. “In the past I’ve been a workaholic, it’s been a bad balance and I have no
tour in September. “Without kids, I was running my own race and focused on my own goals and objectives. Now everything needs to align with them. I don’t want to be away from the kids for more than two weeks in a row either. “And anything will me cry these days. I’m super emo, since becoming a dad, it’s weird,” he smiles.

interest in that any more,” he says, pointing to his phone when close friend and singer Gary Pinto rings, taking the time to answer it and assure him he’ll buzz him right back. He admits that becoming a father was his ultimate wake-up call. “It gave me purpose and redefined my view about life,” says Sebastian, who asked his son Hudson to record some words about friendship that will become part of his live show and
He wrote his latest single Choir about his friend Luke Liang who lost his battle with mental health. The news crushed Sebastian when he received the call while in Los Angeles working on the forthcoming album. The video clip features his eldest son playing with his friend, both carrying sparklers, until one fades to black. It’s an ode to that lost friendship and looking out for those you love.
“Luke [Liang] was in my band, we toured Europe together just last year. The news totally crushed me,” he says. “It all came out of nowhere, it’s pretty awful.” Sebastian admits being on the road is isolating for some. He likens his touring life to that of his father Ivan, who is a geologist and often based for a month at a time on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean. “I look at his life and it’s not too dissimilar to being crew or artists on the road. When the gig is gone and the high is done, you’re just there by yourself in a hotel. For a lot of musicians it’s confronting.” Sebastian is grateful for the love and support of family. He relishes nothing more than to go back to visit relatives in Adelaide, even though he and Jules have called Sydney home for many years now. Named after his late paternal grandfather, Sebastian recalls ringing his father to tell him about the Order of Australia medal and how it brought him to tears. “My late grandfather was a Japanese POW. He learnt the language and became a translator and was freed as a result,” Sebastian says. “He was presented with a National Award in 1979 for his service. When my parents heard about my Order of Australia medal they were over the moon, but Dad was really emotional about it, knowing that he had named me after him and that it was a recognition my grandpa would be totally proud of.” ● GUY SEBASTIAN’S RIDIN’ WITH YOU TOUR \ September 14-15, Hamer Hall, the Arts Centre Melbourne. lay Smith has rediscovered his competitive edge. The 2016 Western Bulldogs premiership player, forced into retirement by a chronic knee injury last year, has donned the boxing gloves, winning his first battle in the ring at Melbourne Pavilion in June. The 26-year-old, who was born and bred in Gippsland, underwent three ACL knee operations during his 55-game playing career and, nearly a year on from hanging up the boots, has found a new passion. “Competing – that was the biggest thing I was struggling with and missing outside of footy. There was also probably some mental stuff too
I’d dealt with before and I was also adapting to a new life and not having sport in it,’’ Smith says. “When I did take boxing up it filled that hole, gave me some focus back, a lot more enjoyment and something to look forward to. Leading up to the fight we did a seven-week training camp with 26 other fighters … I got to experience that camaraderie again.” On June 21, Smith, the headline act, beat opponent Chris French in three rounds, taking out the cruiserweight division. “It was good just to get back into some competitive sport, get that buzz again and put my mind towards something. It was awesome to get a win in my first one,” he says. “There was a lot of waiting in the lead-up then the actual fight went pretty quick, it was only three twominute rounds. I built some

“Competing – that was the biggest thing I was struggling with and missing outside of footy ... adapting to a new life.” relentless pressure, came forward, threw my punches and didn’t let my opponent dictate terms.” Donning the boxing gloves wasn’t completely foreign to Smith. “I’d always done it in the off-season for footy, mainly for fitness but I have always loved boxing. After footy finished I put on a few kilos and wasn’t real happy about it so I went in for a session and got roped into a seven-week camp,’’ he says. “My playing weight was 85 kilograms, I was 89.7 kilograms at the start of camp and was 81 kilograms flat when I weighed in the night before [the fight].” Retiring from the AFL at just 25 forced Smith to embark on a
quick transition from elite athlete to full-time worker. He swapped a Sherrin for the tools and the Bulldogs jumper for a fluro polo, landing a job in steel fixing, working on the ANZAC train station development as part of the Metro Tunnel project. “It’s definitely been a change of pace,’’ Smith says. “It took a bit of getting used to, to start with, but I like it – the blokes I work with and working outdoors every day.” So, with one win from one fight under Smith’s belt, what’s next? “I’ll stick with it and have another fight in October. Boxing came around at the right time for me,’’ he says. ●

t’s not uncommon to find Jodi Anasta on the Neighbours set at 3.30am. The actor and mother of one commutes to Melbourne every week for filming and says exercise and a healthy diet have enabled her to stay on top of a hectic routine. The 34-year-old recently took time off the Neighbours’ set to reset after exhaustion got the better of her. She is in Melbourne four days a week to film and says her juggle is real, but it’s also her choice. “Sometimes you need to take time to get back to yourself and look after yourself,” she says. “And we shouldn’t shame people for doing that. We put pressure on ourselves when it’s actually OK to have a break and recoup.”

Anasta will often be on the Channel Ten set at 3.30am reading scripts and exercising before saddling into hair and makeup at 6am. “I am so used to this lifestyle now,” she says. “And I do love my morning time. I like to fill my head by reading positive affirmations, doing some weights, mediation and get myself ready for a big day ahead. “It’s important for me to have a clear and strong mind. I take vitamins, eat a healthy diet ... the older I get, the more I know what it takes for my body to function at its best.” Anasta has set up a small gym on set and heads there in between takes. You’ll also find her reading poetry by Zachary K Douglas.
“It’s a place to go to let off steam, continue working out or take a mental break,” she says. “If things feel intense I remind myself [it’s] important to meditate even for a few minutes.” When Runway Room’s makeup artist and photographer Alex Fevola asked Anasta to be her brand ambassador, she didn’t think twice. “I love the products, they’re ethical, functional and great quality,” Anasta says. “There’s a Glow Palette in the range, which is a three-in-one that works wonders for someone on the go like me. It has a bronzer, blush and illuminator.” Anasta didn’t plan on a life in
acting, but landed a role on Channel Seven’s Home & Away in 2005 when she auditioned at the age of 19. “It felt like the right thing to pursue at the time and 14 years later I’m still here doing it,” she says. Away from the screen Anasta loves to write poetry. “I find writing a therapeutic way of expressing feelings and story and hope that one day I can explore my love of it via other means. I am obsessed with poetry, art and design – there is something in that whole world I want to explore in the next five to 10 years – so never say never,” Anasta says. ● ● runwayroom.com

Anasta, the ambassador for luxury beauty brand Runway Room, says her busy work life wouldn’t be possible without the help of her mother, who assists with raising her five-year-old daughter Aleeia. “All we can do as mothers is the best we can with the knowledge we have,” she says. “It doesn’t matter what we do for work, it is a juggling act for all women regardless of the profession you choose. “For me, it’s all about planning my week and staying on top of that. I know my filming schedules a few weeks out and I plan. When I come to Melbourne my daughter Aleeia stays with my mum … where would we be without our mums?”

MELBOURNE NEWS The future is beautifully bright for four talented young women with a stylish eye.
T
here was a time when aspiring makeup artist Gwen Catamura was facing an uncertain future. Just over a year ago, when she was in year 11 at school, she confided in her teacher what she was dealing with. “I was at risk of homelessness at the time; I was unsure of where I would go or how I would succeed in my life,” she says. Things didn’t necessarily get better quickly: as early as this year, when she moved out of home, “I was struggling, balancing the financial side of living alone with [trying to get] an education. And I had a lot of issues. I couldn’t afford rent and the bare necessities; on top of that, I had mental and [physical] health issues.” But recently, Catamura discovered that she is one of four recipients of L’Oreal’s Beauty For All Scholarship, each worth $12,000, which supports individuals who have faced hardship or

disadvantage, helping them to pursue a career in the beauty industry. Catamura will have her diploma of beauty therapy at the Kangan Institute in collaboration with L’Oreal – a game-changer for her. L’Oreal’s commitment to better its industry certainly disproves the notion that beauty only runs skin deep. It aims to remove financial barriers faced by those who have passion and motivation for a future in beauty, seeking to diversify beauty professionals, and making an investment in the future of the beauty retail sector. Bendigo Kangan Institute’s chief executive, Phill Murphy, says Kangan’s involvement came about due to “a little bit of serendipity”, and has welcomed the opportunity to be part of an initiative that has such a positive impact. “You see so much in the news about really disconnected people doing terrible things, and this is about the power of connection,” he says. “[These recipients] can see the journey in front of them, and it’s giving them actual opportunities with almost guaranteed outcomes … the beauty of having
L’Oreal is that it’s such a fantastic brand name. It will make a number of others stand up and ask, ‘What’s going on there?’ and will open a number of doors and contacts for everyone.” Scholarship recipient Antoinette Nero hopes to one day own her own business or work for a beauty company. After moving from country Victoria to Melbourne to study, she had to concentrate on cafe work in order to live independently. “I’d already contacted TAFE and said, ‘I don’t know how I will pay’ [for my course],” she says. Financial self-sufficiency had been an issue in her life since her parents divorced when she was 14.
“When I become successful, I’ll let people know that nothing is out of their reach.” ANTOINETTE NERO
“Moving out, I knew it was going to be tough and that I couldn’t ask my mum for anything. [But] my mum has always been inspirational. She went through a lot of struggles and she is still the strongest and happiest person I’ve met.” For both young women, there’s an urge to pay it forward. When Catamura was in high school at Mount Ridley College, she took part in “Christmas on the Streets,” where beauty services were provided to the homeless community in Melbourne. What really stayed with her was that something as seemingly frivolous as a particular nail polish colour could make a person feel more confident. In the future, she hopes to “push others and motivate them, and tell them that if they’re passionate, they should go ahead”. Nero says she has a similar outlook. “When I become successful, I’ll let people know that nothing is out of their reach.” ●

Beaumaris came of age as a haven for active families in the latter half of the 20th century, with the yacht club established in 1959 and the football club kicking off in 1962. In a stroke of salubrious fortune, the sports club at the end of the street in which this house is located has just been refurbished to offer excellent tennis and cricket facilities. Big fans of the life afforded by the Beaumaris Bubble, the owners did away with a tired, old pad on the block and replaced it with this boutique newbie in 2014. Roomy, up-to-the-minute and glamorous, the results are also functional and homey, with fireside chats part of their well-hatched plan, and extra space for boots-and-all action. Through the front door, the entrance halls swaps discretion for dazzle. Gleaming, white floor tiles, lavishly layered skirting boards and a two-storey ceiling dripping with replica Raimond Moooi light fittings give it bespoke chic. Period elegance that has flourished since 1880 and the contemporary excellence contributed by a 2013 renovation by esteemed architect Neil Clerehan are brilliantly, beautifully combined throughout WYNSTAY. In a residence that’s recognised for its spaces and revered for its style, the character of refined formal rooms is complemented by the light-filled ease of informal proportions and a magnificent kitchen featuring a butler’s pantry. Above, five bedrooms of unlimited luxury share two sublime bathrooms, including the main bedroom´s ensuite. Two additional bathrooms, zoned heating and air-conditioning, plantation shutters and 3 phase power accompany a fabulous home further enhanced by the flexible lower level’s retreat/theatre, gym, wine cellar and storage. A separate billiards room, solar/gas heated pool, travertine terrace, BBQ bench, external fire-place, lift access to all floors and and 3 car garage add to - but by no means conclude - the attractions of WYNSTAY, moments from leading schools, Glenferrie Road and transport.

The Architects Choice
Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered. The Eighth pillars. The philosophy behind The Eighth is based on five pillars: Taste, Live, Work, Play and Restore. A holistic interconnected approach to living.
Live The Eighth allows you to curate life for yourself. These expansive and timeless private residences feature natural materials and are finished with high quality custom detailing and furnishings. They are intuitive, comfortable, inspiring spaces that enable what’s important in life. Play The Eighth offers more than just recreation – the spaces allow you to connect with others, and stimulate your senses. Its dining and drinking options, and rooftop pool, are purpose-built to easily integrate play into the everyday.
Work
Taste The Eighth’s buzzing café and sophisticated wine bar are spaces that enhance the time you spend doing what you love. At The Eighth, these spaces are extensions of residents’ apartments, and offer areas to work and play.

Real and lasting work-life balance is possible at The Eighth, a place where its office spaces are designed to inspire and stimulate. Residents will be compelled to work from the rooftop, the café or wine bar, and their own residences. Restore The opportunities to incorporate wellness into everyday life are part of this building’s DNA. The Eighth’s European-inspired day spa and wellness level includes a spa, steam room and sauna, hammam, experience showers, relaxation beds, treatment rooms, and a fitness studio.
