There has never been a more crucial time to have a filmmaker like Louis Theroux in our midst, with his documentaries into subcultures, uncomfortable realities, and the complexities of humans who exist on the fringes. As journalism becomes more about quick bites, in an increasingly busy world Theroux’s deep dives into some of the world’s weirdest subjects cover a path less and less travelled. He interviews without judgment, and yet his cynicism – when required – is palpable. He is our cover feature, ahead of a January 2020 Australian tour, including a Melbourne show. ●

“ I am Sandra Bader ” … a canine massage therapist In my old life, I studied anthropology and worked in

academia for a bit. But it wasn’t where I saw myself. After that I did a course in therapeutic massage, remedial massage and shiatsu for humans, and then migrated to dogs because I realised it’s really hard on my body working with humans. My dog was also having problems. He was limping so I thought, why don’t I apply what I know to him? There are so many massage therapists for humans out there, but hardly any for dogs. After doing a course in canine myofunctional therapy, I started my business, Paws4Paws, five years ago. A lot of my “clients” are old dogs with arthritis and general stiffness. But I also have younger dogs. Generally, their owners take them to the park, but don’t warm them up. There’s a lot of small injuries, pulled muscle fibres. I also do palliative care with old dogs. I’ve lost a few clients already over the past five years, which is very sad. I’m with them until the end and just try to keep them more comfortable and alleviate the pain. Canine massage therapy is slowly getting more popular here. But in saying that, a lot of people still don’t know it exists. So when I tell people what I do, they’re surprised and some people are quite critical at first. But then I explain the benefits and people see it makes sense. I go to my clients’ houses because it is easier for me and for the dog to relax. They know the environment and they know the smells and the owner is there. I am with the dog wherever the dog is more comfortable. It’s about building a relationship really. If the dog’s hyperactive, it can take three or four sessions until the dog really relaxes completely. With other dogs, their nature’s a bit slower and calmer. It depends on what the issue is, and if they’re in pain. It’s different with humans because I can talk to a human and say, “OK, this might hurt a little bit or might be a bit tender, just communicate with me and let me know what’s going on”. That doesn’t work with a dog, obviously. It’s finding that balance between doing my work and telling or showing the dog, “look it’s OK, I’m not going to hurt you”. ● ● paws4paws.com.au

ritish documentarian Louis Theroux never planned a career as a storyteller beyond his first journalism gig aged 21 at a San Jose newspaper, and thanks filmmaker Michael Moore for giving him the chance to seek beyond it. Theroux has spent the past 25 years making documentaries about cults, sex workers, UFOs, Nazis and polygamists and takes his viewers where few dare to go – face to face in some rather confronting situations. “I wasn’t that successful working in print. I mean I enjoyed people telling me their story and writing about their obsession in a news article, but after a few years I met Michael Moore and it changed my life,” Theroux says. “Michael saw something in me I didn’t see in myself and sent me off to do a report for his new show TV Nation and it was at that moment I thought ‘maybe this is something I could do’.” When TV Nation ended, Theroux created Weird Weekends for the BBC. It had a successful run between 1998-2000. He went deep into cults and religious groups who believe the world is coming to an end, teasing out the extreme point of view for compelling viewing. Then came When Louis Met from 20002002, interviewing various British

“I have always been interested in forming human relationships with people who are on the fringe.” “The subject of mental health has always interested me, and at times it can be very emotional to be that up close and personal in someone’s journey,” he says. “What I try to do is destigmatise mental health and yet try to find a way to get these people who are vulnerable and acting as normal as they can in their circumstances to not be afraid to show it.” Theroux returns to Australia for a new stage show, Without Limits, after he last visited in 2016. Hosted by Julia Zemiro and featuring special guest Shirley Phelps-Roper, who starred in his 2007 documentary The Most Hated Family in America, Theroux will delve into the making of his documentaries, his encounters with various subcultures and an extraordinary catalogue of work. “In divided times, the sensitive nuanced approached is even more valuable and you have to hold your nerve,” he says of his approach. “You have to go to difficult places and tell your story as best you can.” A compelling exploration of US college rape was a difficult documentary to make, according to Theroux. “The Night in Question was about allegations of sexual assault on campuses in America and following a guy accused of

celebrities. It included a segment with the late BBC radio personality Jimmy Saville who, years after it aired, was charged with 500 sex offences. He died in 2011. “I have always been interested in forming human relationships with people who are on the fringe and building bridges with them with the view of understanding them in a fuller way,” Theroux says. The 49-year-old father of three, who lives in London, was born in Singapore to an American father (writer Paul Theroux) and a British mother. He has written a new book, a memoir Gotta Get Theroux This about his life on camera, the inner machinations of his mind and his odd career choice. His memoir reveals a child who was anxious; admitting it was this that drove him to become totally work focused for a long period of time. “Nowadays, I really take each year as it comes,” he says. “It wasn’t until making Weird Weekends in 1998 for the BBC that I thought I would have a whole career making shows for TV. I have never allowed myself to think this is my permanent job. But I’ll take it.” Theroux has covered topics of mental health – from post-partum psychosis to the confronting nature of dementia and the importance of touch during memory loss – which have even left him lost for words.

rape,” he says. “We didn’t know where the story would go, but knew there was a moral and ethical tension that exists between the urge to respect due process and not rush into judgment and the seriousness of rape. “That’s the heart of the matter in what we do and what I love about documentary making. The fact those two completely valid ethical imperatives do come into conflict sometimes makes the process very difficult at times.” Theroux says making documentaries since US President Donald Trump entered the White House has opened up the playing field. “I think the world has changed a lot since Trump came into power,” he admits. “Trump was a twinkle in the eye of the American voting public all those years ago, and I think now we find a world transformed in his image in certain respects. “For me, as a student of weirdness, I feel as though my niche pursuit of people who are in different ways strange, dangerous or unconventional, have taken the White House hostage, which I think is fascinating. I think because of the nature of what I do, I have a unique insight into that in some way.” ● LOUIS THEROUX WITHOUT LIMITS \ January 19, 2020, the Plenary at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. ● mcec.com.au

Watch this space Kennedy evokes its hallmark style and attention to detail inside the Birdcage at the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Wo r d s

hey don’t call it “Millionaires’ Row” for nothing. Occupying prime real estate in the Birdcage brings lofty expectations of design greatness, and the Kennedy marquee – an international collaboration between the Australian luxury watch house, an Italian design firm and Swiss construction specialists – is bringing the dazzle to this year’s spring racing carnival. Kennedy has been a fixture of the Birdcage at Flemington since 2017, but this is the first year executive chairman James Kennedy has taken the leap to a trackside position. And he didn’t leave things to chance when it came to entertaining his guests across the four-day carnival, recruiting the talents of Italian design house La Cellula for a bespoke marquee that takes

L A R I S SA D U B E C KI

inspiration from the leather, wood and brass of racing stables and elevates them to high-luxe. “We’ve moved to the front row this year and have embraced the fact we can create the height and space to get visibility onto the track. For us the marquee is all about celebrating a day at the races,” Kennedy says. A Melbourne Cup Carnival marquee is not something a company enters into lightly – the design and execution and wow-factor has to be pitch-perfect – and the all-new Kennedy marquee is a collaboration as meticulous as the workings of one of its famous timepieces. There was a telling synchronicity in the partnership with Swiss company Expomobilia, a long-time collaborator with La Cellula that brought the designs to life and had them shipped, flat-pack style, to Australia. The production specialists have been heavily involved with the installation and execution of leading

“The materials and the colour scheme are designed to convey the feeling of entering a prestigious club.” watch brands at the prestigious annual Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show. “Expomobilia is one of the key players in Baselworld, so we had a conversation with them earlier this year, spoke to them about the Melbourne Cup Carnival and our pavilion and the rest is history,” Kennedy says. The two-level marquee with a track-facing first-floor terrace was inspired by the elegance of the equestrian sports, while also obliquely referencing the Kennedy values of tradition and quality. “The materials and the colour scheme are designed to convey the feeling of entering a prestigious club, combining the art of design and

equine grace,” says La Cellula designer Ottavio Di Chio. Clad in a semi-transparent metal mesh facade, the pavilion plays with natural light, while materials – natural oak and brown leather through to the use of topstitching and burnished brass – recreate the warm authenticity of a racing club. A horseshoe-shaped lounge and suspension lamps tie in the theme, along with a striking series of equine photographs by Giana Terranova. The marquee’s Exhibition of Wonders – a showcase of selected timepieces from the world’s best watchmaking brands, including Rolex, Patek Philippe, IWC, Panerai, Cartier, Tudor and Ulysse Nardin – is not only a point of difference, it was also the area requiring the highest attention in design, Di Chio says. ●

here’s a moment in the second episode of ABC’s runaway reality hit Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds that executive producer Debbie Cuell recalls as a standout. Eric, 85, is leading superhero-loving youngster Aiden around a remembrance walk at their retirement village. But the four-year-old is puzzled. “What was the war?” he says. His elderly friend goes on to carefully explain how “people like him” fought each other and died. “It was a poignant moment and the look of shock on this four-year-old’s face was quite evident,” Cuell says. “That was just one of the scenes that really stayed with me.”

It wasn’t the only highlight in the show that quietly won its time slot when it aired on the ABC this year. Cuell and a team of producers worked tirelessly to pull together the kind of reality series that had never been shown before in Australia. Based on a unique social experiment where a group of older retirement home residents are brought together with a group of preschoolers, audiences witnessed how inter-generational contact can improve the health and wellbeing of the elderly. Over seven weeks, two groups of 11 older Australians and 10 preschoolers came together for activities each day in a specially designed preschool built within the retirement home. It is exceptionally moving, with moments of sadness intertwined with spontaneity and joy. Cuell says she can understand why the concept resonated so well with Aussie audiences. “I think because everybody has parents, either alive or no longer alive, and has probably seen them age and go through the same issues and then you

Young at heart see these four-year-olds who are so unaffected by life yet. “They are not sneaky. They are pure. “To see how they brought these older Australians out of themselves and got them moving again – it was very moving. “It offers a lot of hope.” A veteran of television producing, Cuell can’t help but shed a tear when talking about the broader impact the program may have had. “In a way it has helped highlight the problems we will all face and that we should always look out for others and be cared for in the same way,” Cuell says. “We all get so busy. It’s easy to forget.” The executive producer says she has always lobbied for and worked on the kind of programs she believes can reach out and touch the audience. Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds was no exception. “What a privilege to bring two vulnerable but delightful age groups together in the hope of capturing something that could change the way we look after our ageing population,” she says. But filming was not without its challenges. Selecting the correct production team to work with the two groups that were generations apart and were vulnerable in different ways took time and careful consideration. “Our duty of care to the groups was paramount,” Cuell says. “We needed patience, understanding, and respect for each and every one of the participants.” ●

hen someone says “Brighton”, the suburb immediately conjures colourful bathing boxes, tree-lined streets and affluent bayside living. Just 11 kilometres from the city, the suburb feels worlds away with its relaxed, beachside-chic atmosphere. The established community frequents the shopping strips, and the houses – whether architecturally designed and contemporary or pristine Victorians and Edwardians – are enviable. Many who raised families in the area stay on to slow down by the beach, while their kids now have a small tribe of their own and are eager to stay close to prestigious private schools.

Wo r d s

Brightonites love the outdoors. You’re never far from someone in designer activewear walking by the sand, cycling or on the public golf course. Catching up over coffee at one of many inviting cafes – whether it’s the Little Ox, Brighton School House, St Martin’s or elsewhere – is a weekly rite of passage, while shopping is a breeze on vibrant Church and Bay streets. You’ll find the Dendy Cinema on the former, Brighton Bay Cinema on the latter, and boutiques and restaurants on both. Over the past few years the suburb’s value has continued to grow while the rest of the market has weakened, and with median property prices around the $2 million mark, living in Brighton is certainly an investment. ●

ike most of us, the older I get the more I tell myself that age is just a number. I really believe that this is true. I have worked with thousands of people in their 50s, 60s and beyond and witnessed that biological age and chronological age are very different. I meet 40-year-olds who don’t take care of themselves who have a biological age of 70 and I’ve worked with very active, health-conscious 70-yearolds who live life better than most 30-year-olds. Ageing is inevitable so let’s embrace it and make sure we take better care of ourselves for a longer and better quality life.

Prevention or delay of disease Reduced risk of falls ■ Increased confidence ■ Weight management Anything that increases muscle mass and bone density as we age is vital. If we do nothing, we lose these things fast. When it comes to selecting the right exercise routine, you should weigh up risk versus return. Ask yourself, what is going to give me the best return and the lowest risk? Here are some key activities through different decades and their benefits: ■ ■

Lifestyle changes (such as kids and careers) as we age often cause us to move less when we hit our 40s. This is a time in our lives where we want to ensure our workouts include cardio and some form of resistance. From circuit training to sensible HIIT

workouts through to walking, jogging, bike riding and swimming, the key to this age is some form of resistance, some form of cardio and consistency. 60s, 70s & BEYOND \

As you get into your 60s and 70s (remember, I’m generalising), you may want to pick workouts that are gentler on the muscles and joints. Swimming and water-based workouts, cycling and band resistance would be my picks. It’s also important to note the social benefits of staying active when exercising and socialising meet. For example: dancing, golf, tennis – there can be huge benefits to mind and body in these pursuits. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

Home owners can continue the same type of story with their style from the indoor to the outdoor to keep the same look and comfort throughout,” Kupke says. Cosh Living is one of the leading companies behind the evolution of the Australian backyard. The business is responsible for bringing some of the world’s most acclaimed European furniture brands to the country for the first time including Dedon, Tribu and Manutti. “If you want the designs, styles and the quality of those brands, then we are the only place in Australia you can buy them,” Kupke says. hen Colin Kupke and his business partner Shane Sinnott founded Cosh Living in 2008, the typical Australian backyard was a remarkably different place than it is now. While interior decorating and gardening had become popular hobbies (in part thanks to a surge of renovation television programs), stylish outdoor furniture remained an afterthought for most home owners. Instead, this space was often left to tackle “down the track”, making the backyard feel removed and uninspiring compared to a home’s interiors. As Kupke recalls it, “The furniture was very disorientated in design, look and feel from what was inside the house. There was not a lot of design to it, and not a lot of the longevity or lifespan.” Eleven years later, Kupke says the same emphasis once placed only on living rooms is also being applied to outdoor areas. upholstered sofas, not 12 to 16 weeks as is common elsewhere in the industry. Recognising the way home owners increasingly link their interior and exterior spaces, Cosh Living began stocking indoor furniture labels in 2016. Their interior collections – including those by its own in-house furniture label, Kett, led by designer Justin Hutchinson – showcase the same contemporary aesthetic Cosh Living is known for, enabling customers to easily create a cohesively furnished indoor-outdoor area. “We like to use colours and textures that are a little bit earthy in look and relate well to nature, with a whole range of materials that can add texture, softness and a really nice general feel,” Kupke says. Quality is also another key value shared among all Cosh Living brands. “We invest in brands who use materials that are made to cope with the conditions we have in Australia and we expect to get some real longevity in the furniture that we sell,” Kupke says. “Fabrics will ultimately break down, fade or become stained, but the furniture remains in really good condition. We find ourselves replacing cushion

covers for people just to revitalise their outdoor furniture many years down the track.” Perhaps surprisingly, Kupke says the number one element of a well-designed outdoor space isn’t a stylish aesthetic, but comfort. “When you’re home and when you’re outside, that’s your relaxation time,” he says. “You’ve worked hard to get there, so why not be as comfortable as you possibly can, while still using furniture that has a look and feel to it that suits your whole home environment.” Some of his current favourite pieces for achieving this include Tribu’s Senja sofa, the Kett Frame walling system, Kett’s Otway collection, and the Mbrace and Tibbo collections by Dedon. BRIGHTON COLLECTION \ DOWNSIZING WITHOUT COMPROMISE IN BRIGHTON

C

onstruction has started on Brighton’s new landmark address, a prestigious 10-residence project designed by Martin Friedrich, 55 metres from Church Street and the heart of Brighton village. Located to take advantage of the idyllic bayside lifestyle that only Brighton offers, it’s a short stroll from the Brighton Collection to cafes, restaurants, entertainment, trains and the bay. Bayside architect Martin Friedrich’s designs are synonymous with contemporary Brighton, balancing simplicity and grandeur in iconic designs for high-end residences. His design for the Brighton Collection matches his reputation, with airy, lightfilled homes designed to inspire good living. Developers Tim Campbell and Stuart Kacir, directors of Carpe Group, say there’s been constant interest from people living within a two-kilometre radius of the project since its launch. “We have designed these residences with Martin Friedrich and Jack Merlo to offer downsizing without compromise,” Campbell says. ● LIZ McLACHLAN

ith dramatic bay and city views, and architecture inspired by mid-century modern and traditional Japanese design, Virgate Property Group’s newly launched $120 million Domain House will be a sophisticated new landmark within the Domain Precinct. Located on 3AW’s former Bank Street site, it is a five-minute walk from the Royal Botanic Gardens and the future Anzac Station, within Melbourne’s famed arts and cultural precinct. Bruce Henderson Architects’ 20-level design prioritises natural light, views and proportion in a diverse selection of 170 one, two and three-bedroom residences and a series of high-end social spaces. Bay views begin from level four with wide city views from upper levels; some residences will have botanic garden views. Inside, Japanese design inspiration is evidenced in abundant natural timbers, long simple lines and flexible layouts. CBRE’s Andrew Leoncelli says Domain House will give residents one of Melbourne’s best addresses with over 240 hectares of open space nearby. ● LIZ McLACHLAN

On the vast terrace of the Marine’s sub-penthouse the bay view is eternal and yet never the same. Cyclists glide and swimmers wade, ships loiter at Station Pier and at dusk the city skyline turns on a galaxy of light. There’s even a dash of industrial chic, with dockside cranes looming like dinosaurs in the distance. South, west, north and a little bit east, the terrace surveys it all. Whosoever next owns this magnificent apartment will be a very popular party host. Designed by SJB Architects, the Marine has been a landmark of desire since 1999. Its Nott Street corner address makes for an easy walk to Bay Street and the light rail, which originally made it hot property for downsizers. Now, with Albert Park College surging ahead, school-age families might fancy this three-bedroom eyrie as a place in which to grow up and get healthy. The apartment was recently renovated and has new bathrooms and kitchen. Currently configured with three living areas and two bedrooms, it has a floor plan that can morph as needed; turn that third lounge back into a bedroom, as you choose. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap the enormous family and dining areas, which open on two sides to the terrace. Oak flooring adds a sturdy cool below block-out blinds for those summer scorchers. The kitchen looks effortlessly smart in white with a waterfall island and stainless steel appliances. Pull up at the breakfast bar for lashings of avocado smash. The second living area, with matt black cabinetry, suits a television lounge. Adjoining it is another living area (or study

“THE BOAT SHED” Here is a truly unique and rare opportunity to secure one of the most amazing properties on the South Gippsland coastline. Perfectly positioned in the tightly held village of Waratah Bay, is this exclusive property. With absolute frontage to one of the most pristine beaches in Australia, and a view of Wilsons Promontory, is all that lies before you. With all the character and charm of a bygone era, “The Boat Shed” epitomises the traditional rustic appeal of a modest, yet comfortable 3-bedroom cottage and an open plan living area with small kitchenette, dining and lounge areas. This is the perfect setting for the family to sit back, relax and laze away the summer holidays without a care in the world. Fill your days with swimming, surfing, rock pooling, fishing, a leisurely stroll along the beach or just kick back and read a book. Waratah Bay is one of the best kept secrets of coastal Victoria, protected by parks Victoria and the Cape Liptrap Coastal Reserve, the foreshore is an unspoilt haven, preserved in its natural state, free from extensive development. 10 minutes around the bay you’ll find Sandy Point with its boat launching facilities and a General Store for all your incidental needs. If a more substantial shopping precinct is required the Township of Foster is only 15 minutes away, with supermarkets, medical facilities, and eateries. This property has been in the same ownership since the 1970’s, and it is a truly exceptional opportunity for you to secure your own piece of paradise.
