What I love A who’s who of designer names have combined forces on this striking property. The twostorey 1938 Marcus Martin-designed home, listed by Kay & Burton, had a makeover by the team at Hecker Guthrie. Its luxury features include light fittings by Apparatus Studio, a built-in barbecue and wine fridge on the limestone terrace, overlooking a private garden and lap pool.

Note from the editor
T
he concept of home can mean any number of different things to different people. For me right now, it’s my inner-city rental but, in truth, it’s wherever my loved ones are. For those lucky enough to snap up the keys to our gorgeous cover property, home will mean living in one of Melbourne’s prestigious suburbs, on a plot of land that takes in prime city views and verdant green spaces. Journalist Lou Sweeney walks the halls of the impressive five-bedroom Victorian home in Hawthorn’s St James Park Estate for this week’s feature story. For artist Cai Guo-Qiang, whose exhibition The Transient Landscape will be showing at the National Gallery of Victoria from May 24, home is a spectacular pad in New Jersey designed by one of the world’s most famous architects, the legendary Frank Gehry. Journalist Rachelle Unreich speaks to Cai about the joy of living and working in this space.

hen you turn the car off Burwood Road, Hawthorn into Yarra Street, you find yourself in some of the most rarefied property air in all Melbourne. The St James Park Estate and its winding, verdant loveliness is a thing to behold. On the exclusive streets here, that bend and dip to accommodate the flow of the Yarra, are a clutch of our city’s grandest homes. Although the area is studded mostly with imposing period manors on large grounds, there’s a sort of lovely accessibility here; views that open onto the city skyline and the river gums confer a connection, rather than retreat from the surrounding environment.

Number 26 Shakespeare Grove is a radiant case in point. This wedgeshaped block offers fine vistas from its sublime west-facing rear where the inner suburbs lay a gorgeous multi-coloured carpet up to the towers of town. Built in about 1890, plenty of period finery has been retained and polished here, but there are generous broad spaces of a more contemporary bent too. The rear of the house, with its expansive family and entertaining spaces, was added about 20 years ago and the amenity the rooms provide is brilliant. From the bend on Shakespeare Grove you take the gated entry up a set of stairs to a tessellated-tiled return verandah. In front, a parterrestyle garden offers prettiness and
privacy and provides a winning green frame. Beyond the luminous leadlighting of the arched entrance a wide foyer with parquetry flooring anchors the lofty decorative ceilings. Bank right to the first of the majestic formal rooms. The billiard room has excellent dimensions and an entirely apposite colour scheme; deep magenta walls rise up to a charcoal trimmed coved ceiling. A beautiful large bay window brings the light and a timber fireplace the warmth. Cross back to the near identical dimensions and style of the media room, except here you get your own marble wet bar. You can cross past the stair and head west to the living areas via a passage that has a powder room, neat little indoor cubby and internal

The St James Park Estate is arguably the pinnacle of Hawthorn with its wide, leafy streets and magnificent architecture. Having only eight houses on the west side adds to the prestige of this location.
Need to know: The Yarra River winds its way along the bottom part of this precinct. Access to Richmond and the city is a skip away over Hawthorn Bridge. The 75 tram services the area and Melbourne Girls’ College and a range of private schools are within a few kilometres.
access to the garage or take in the grand dining room just below the entrance hall. A set of steps take you down into this fine space, both broad and beautiful. French doors lead onto a quiet, covered terrace with a pond. Head further on from here to the kitchen that features a rangy walk-in pantry and a long marble preparation bench to the side. Sitting front and centre is the lovely kitchen with a long marble and timber island bench. Behind there’s an ornate rangehood and top-notch appliances. Across on the north wall there’s a brilliant little sun trap where a window seat looks out over a mosaic-tiled feature wall. The spacious open-plan family room has enough space to offer another generous dining area as well as luxurious lounging. There’s plenty of leg room here centred around an angled corner fireplace and three sets of french doors over that superb west-facing rear garden. A full-length verandah rolls down to a deep, synthetic-grass terrace. The lush borders offer excellent privacy and feature towering palms and tropical greenery. All this flows down more stairs to surround the sparkling pool and spa. There’s plenty of paved areas down here too and a raised platform offers a terrific dining spot. Beyond there’s a pool room with a kitchenette and bathroom. You can access level one via the main entrance stair or the steps near the kitchen.
Whichever way you choose there are treats galore up here. To the easterly front are two superb, typically Victorian rooms – grand in size and with glorious views beyond the lacework balcony that wraps around to the south. You could use these as particularly fine bedrooms, or they’d be perfect as rumpus/ retreat spaces. Boasting marble fireplaces, ceiling roses and bay windows, you’d be happy whatever the function. A crisp white bathroom services this section before you do the hall split and head up more stairs. Three lovely bedrooms sit here, two on the south side are split by a sparkling shared en suite with twin basin vanity and glass shower.
Head into the main bedroom – the scope here is near perfect – large, but not overwhelming. There’s a walk-in wardrobe and a marble-trimmed en suite but the star is the balcony. Running across the room at full stretch you can head onto it through three sets of french doors and then you’re in heaven. Sit out here and you can see the city and those gums; the Pelaco sign and St Kilda Road. You know you’re in Melbourne but here in St James Park, on this balcony, you feel like you’re on top of the world. This feature is part of a Domain Deluxe package.

here are few people who will ever know what it’s like to live in a home designed by one of the world’s most famous architects, Frank Gehry. But one person who does is his friend, artist Cai GuoQiang. The two met when Cai had a solo show in 2009 at Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain, and Gehry took note of the artist’s installation, Head On, in which 99 replica wolves appeared to be leaping skyward in an arc before crashing into a transparent wall. A connection was formed between the men immediately. Cai says that his friendship with Gehry stems from the fact that “I have the heart of a child. Frank is the same … He loves me very much, even though he’s almost 30 years older than me. He’s my example. I need to learn from him.”

When Cai was looking for a space to both work and spend time with his wife and two daughters, he called upon Gehry. The resulting New Jersey house (designed in collaboration with Gehry’s former student Trattie Davies) was once owned by an Olympic equestrian; as such, it includes a renovated horse barn that has been transformed into an artist’s studio. And it’s not just any artist’s studio that’s required when you consider that Chinese-born, New York-based Cai has become best known for his brand of both pyrotechnics and “gunpowder art,” making him the subject of a Netflix documentary, Sky Ladder Ladder. In March, Melbourne got to witness this first hand when Cai set a Williamstown warehouse space alight with gunpowder.

The work began as scattered coloured gunpowder over sheets of silk, covered with a stencil that Cai had created. Once alight, the explosion left behind gunpowder residue seared in peony designs, becoming a part of the National Gallery of Victoria’s exhibition Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape, presented in conjunction with Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality. Luckily, it all went according to plan, which doesn’t always happen; an event of Cai’s in Brisbane called for 99 metal boats to be filled with alcohol and set alight, but they notoriously toppled over and sank.
Poetically, Cai described the whole process as one akin to making love. Following this analogy, does he think that this romance with pyrotechnics will eventually result in a breakup? “Artists may have a breakup with artworks,” he says through a translator. “Because of the possibility of a breakup, you feel nervous, because they do not always forever belong to you. It’s not your personal possession. It’s an individual’s life itself.” Even though Cai has entered artistas-superstar territory, his ability to find common ground with everyone is clear in a story he recounts, of the time he visited Jerusalem. There, he
and you feel compelled to make history together with it. For instance, between the guest house and the main house there is a large pavilion, and earlier I thought that was a waste of space. “But to this point, everyone including myself, my family, my studio staff and visiting guests all love the pavilion. Sitting between two houses, it connects two sceneries. It is not a house that ends with the completion and design and construction – you only start discovering how clever and wonderful it is once you have moved in.” One can imagine Cai walking around it with his wide-eyed sense of wonder, which he clearly has retained despite reaching celebrity status. Of course, he would argue the accuracy of this description. “I’m still boring; just the same. I went to [Crown] Casino. No one ever disturbed me there. No one asked me to take photos. An artist is just a person who loves painting. I don’t ever forget that. I always ask myself, ‘Is this the [same as when] I was a little kid, does my feeling still exist today?”
“I regard all the ancestors from different cultures as my own,” he says simply. “I’m not someone who’s constantly thinking about China and Chinese art.” It’s clear that Cai is very much a global citizen and literally invites the world into his space: when I remark at how wonderful his Gehry house sounds, he tells me I must visit. It’s no pipe dream, either, since he plans to one day turn the property into a foundation and invite the public to see it. For now, he’s still stumbling upon the joy within its walls. “I always make new discoveries, living in this house designed by Frank. It brings you lots of surprises,
“An artist is just a person who loves painting. I don’t ever forget that.” asked to meet a rabbi, “because I look for a shaman or a spiritual medium wherever I go, to have a conversation with me.” As the rabbi described his belief in God, Cai realised that he was describing one aspect of his own Sky Ladder concept, too, whereupon a 500-metre tall “ladder” was suspended in the air by a giant balloon and ignited to create the illusion of a ladder reaching the heavens.
The Melbourne Winter Masterpieces presentation of Terracotta Warriors: SIMON SCHLUTER
On this March day, he explained to the Melbourne onlookers that he’d be running away quickly after he ignited the fuse. Everyone there had the option to wear face masks and earplugs. In Cai’s world, art is not for the faint-hearted. But when the smoke cleared, the delicate panels of fabric collected from the ground revealed unbearably beautiful depictions of the peony, portraying the flower’s blooming process and referencing ancient Chinese culture, for a 31-metre piece he’s titled Transience II (Peony).
Guardians of Immortality and Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape is on at NGV International, May 24 – October 13.

The result is a concrete-look benchtop in the lower apartments and terrazzo benchtops on the upper levels. From top to bottom, Anchor & Cecil is plush and glamorous. Style that’s never out of fashion Who: Deborah Symond O’Neil (Mode Sportif - modesportif.com) and husband Ned O’Neil What: A fashionable apartment Where: Elizabeth Bay, New South Wales
Y
ou’d expect the stylish owner of a luxury fashion and sportswear retailer to have a thoroughly fashionable life in all respects, and that certainly appears to be the case for the founder of Mode Sportif, Deborah Symond O’Neil. She moved into this building six years ago, before shifting into the current apartment with property developer husband Ned O’Neil in 2016.

The couple were lucky to find an Elizabeth Bay home with high ceilings and plenty of space, where all that was required in alterations was to “add a door to the outside terrace off our breakfast room to make entertaining outside easier,” Symond O’Neil says. The building is only seven years old, and Symond O’Neil’s brother previously lived in this apartment. When he moved to London, the couple pounced, moving in soon after. The apartment is filled with natural light, and dazzles with an eclectic mix of new and vintage pieces, artwork and treasured collectibles. The couple share a buzzing energy that radiates throughout the home, and they’re not afraid to play with bright colour and pattern. Symond O’Neil says: “Colour is a real feature for us, and quirky pieces that we have collected over time become the focal points of each room.” The floral and graphic artwork in the dining area by Marc Quinn is one of her favourites, and a real scene stealer. The vintage gold shell light (sourced by her sister Poppy, cofounder of Poco Designs) is also a special feature, casting sculptural shadows on the wall at night.

The only limitation of this bold apartment is the issue of wardrobe space. Symond O’Neil’s extensive collection of clothes has overtaken the third-bedroom aka “girl cave”. While the lack of storage isn’t ideal, the dreamy location overlooking Arthur McElhone Reserve and Elizabeth Bay House means that even this fashion maven is happy to live with an unconventional storage solution.

DEVELOPMENT SPOTLIGHT
A
design dream team that includes Hecker Guthrie, Jackson Clements Burrows (JCB) Architects and award-winning developer Piccolo have come together for the third time to bring to life their most refined residential project to date: Fitzroy House. Working from a heritage building that was a boot-maker’s shop in the 1880s, Fitzroy House will retain its iconic red brick facade, arched windows and door frames, bluestone windowsills, faded painted signage and a prominent chimney. Founding director of JCB Architects Tim Jackson says the heritage of the building and its location were pivotal when approaching the design. “The new built form consciously bookends the site’s iconic heritage building and frames its corner location to celebrate and amplify its presence in a positive way.”

Fitzroy rebooted Nods to the site’s history are also reflected in the interiors, crafted by Hecker Guthrie to represent the enduring nature of Fitzroy, with a contemporary edge. “We took references from the origins of the site’s environment,”
says founding director Hamish Guthrie. “Glass panels throughout are tinted darker to represent the grit and tenacity of the surrounding landscape, and the overall colour scheme is darker to give it a very sophisticated, premium feel.”
The 34 residences have a similar attention to detail. All have private terraces, expansive open-plan living areas and large windows. Wide corridors and high ceilings lend a sense of grandeur; bedrooms are spacious. Kitchens include premium integrated Gaggenau appliances, soft-closing European oak timber joinery and aged-iron finishes. Piccolo director Michael Piccolo says he is proud to be breathing new life into this historic building. “The significance of this building to the local landscape and history adds a character and depth to this project that wouldn’t be possible if you were starting from an empty site,” he says. Fitzroy House has launched to market, with construction expected to commence in mid-2019. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

For Wilson, working from home means she can relax as soon as her job is done.
A DAY WITH
CAROLINE WIL SON Journalist
Morning
I’m an early riser and three mornings a week I go to a local gym group, so I’m up at 5.30. Once a week I’ll meet Corrie (Perkin) to record the podcast and that’s all over by 8.30am. If I’m at the beach, I will head out for a walk with my very old dog. I still buy the newspapers each day. Once I’m home I’ll have breakfast and get on the phone. Life has taught me that the more phone calls you make about any story, the better.
Monday is probably my busiest day. Before I drive back to Melbourne, I talk to the producers at Footy Classified just before 9am about ideas for the show, then I drive to the The Age to do the Real Footy podcast. Midday
If I’m not at home for lunch I’ll meet a contact or catch up with an old friend or work colleague. When I’m sitting down to write a story I’ll make a pot of tea in a beautiful old metal teapot that I couldn’t live without. Sometimes I sit at a desk, sometimes I’m on the sofa, sometimes I’m just in a chair with my laptop – the ritual is the tea. Anyone who has ever waited for my copy will attest that I’m a massive procrastinator – I find it really hard to sit down and start, but once I do I’m pretty good. The biggest distractions are always the garden, chores around the house or wanting to make something, like my mother’s lemon cordial.

e it writing her weekly column for The Age or appearing on Channel Nine’s Footy Classified and a smattering of radio segments, at the heart of veteran AFL journalist Caroline Wilson’s work is talking to people. “It might sound a bit boring, but in terms of professional work I’m mostly just on the telephone,” she says. Having pulled back from the rush of daily journalism, Wilson has a new-found time and passion for gardening, reading, cinema-going, bridge lessons and even co-hosting the weekly podcast Don’t Shoot the Messenger with her best friend, Corrie Perkin. Wilson admits the above list sounds “pretty retirement,” but says: “I’m trying to do more with my life than just write about football.”

WORKING FROM HOME TIP Try not to extend
Late afternoon
This tends to be time to catch up with friends and prepare something nice and healthy for dinner, which I haven’t had time to do in the past. I think if you’re someone who has to be up really early and working really late, you should try to sit down for at least half an hour at some point during the day and just stop.
your deadlines into your family time because that can be
Two evenings a week I do radio spots, so there’s some preparation. I’m not someone who sits around very often. That said, the great thing about working from home most of the time is that when your work is done, you can just go and put the kettle on. If it’s later in the day, pour yourself a glass of wine, do a crossword or pick up a book. I’m pretty good at unwinding. We might go out to a local restaurant, the football or the ballet. If I’m not out, I tend to go to bed early at about 10 o’clock.
