Australian fashion designer Martin Grant doesn’t need a long introduction, but some blokes among the audience may need a prompt. If you see a woman sashaying down the street in a coat engineered to her form, the whorl of fabric with each stride indicating heft and substance, it’s likely a Grant confection. It is no wonder newly minted British royal Meghan Markle is a fan, and her popularity endears him to a wider audience. Grant’s approach is so perfectly suited to a woman in the public glare but who doesn’t want her clothes to snatch that spotlight – and now, he’s making menswear. ●

t's been more than 25 years since the Melbourneborn and internationally renowned fashion designer Martin Grant moved to London before choosing Paris as his final destination. “I speak French 90 per cent of the time, but when I am in France I still feel like an Australian,” Grant says. “It's only when I am in Australia that I feel Parisian and now, after all these years, I have decided that feeling may never change.” Next month’s Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival’s Runway 1, presented by Vogue, will include his latest womenswear collection. Grant, who travels to Australia a couple of times a year to see his family and manage an ongoing collaboration with Qantas (he designs flight attendant and pilot uniforms), won't be in town for VAMFF, as it is during peak selling season in Paris. “I would love to be there, but I trust the team at Vogue to do a great job,” he says. Grant’s label is exclusively stocked at Christine boutique in Melbourne. It's where you'll find his signature womenswear collection and now also a curated mix of his debut men's collection – coats, outerwear and T-shirts. “I was prompted to start a menswear line because I was cold and needed a coat,” he says frankly. “I also got the point where many male friends kept asking me to make coats. Many of the ones I make for women can translate into men’s, so I put my mind to it and it was a refreshing thing to do. After years of dressing women I was happy to look at what a man needed.” Grant has kept his men's collection minimal – there are three coats with additional pieces to complement the range. “For me, the conversation right now is all about crossing the border towards gender-neutral clothing,” he says. “It's also always been easier for women to wear a man's jacket but not the other way around.” Grant made headlines last year when Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle wore a beige trench of his on her trip to Australia, among other pieces from his collection. “There was definitely an immediate reaction worldwide,” he recalls of the social media hysteria. “Customers from America, England and Australia wanted to place an order for the exact same one. The good thing for us was that Meghan, who chooses all her own looks, went for something new from my collection which hadn’t come in store yet, so we had a good idea to make a whole lot more than planned.” International department stores like Barneys and Moda Operandi increased orders after Markle also wore a long, pleated striped dress by the designer.

A champion of Parisian couture, Grant is known for his chic cocktail gowns, belted trench-coat dresses and salon-ready looks for a sophisticated woman about town, and worn by celebrities such as Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and Juliette Binoche. European flair is the essence of his inspiration. “I have always stayed true to my style,” Grant says. “It's important to keep a constant look as part of your aesthetic as a brand and I enjoy trying to find this season's version of that coat that women love. It's more about an evolution than a rewrite.” His longevity and survival as a reputed designer in Paris has been due to years of hard work and commitment to quality. But he has also noticed that customers wanted more for their dollar. The collection shown during the VAMFF runway will highlight the fine line between feminine and masculine silhouettes. “I wanted a gender contrast this season and varnished the classic trench to look tougher, and

“For me, the conversation right now is all about crossing the border towards gender-neutral clothing.” dresses have a ’50s style, but come with an off-theshoulder look for a sharp diversion,” Grant says. Grant's decision to be stocked at Christine is no accident – he's a hit with her cult audience. He recalls meeting the owner Christine Barro through mutual friends and crossing paths through Melbourne's nightclub scene in the ’80s. Barro, who worked as an accessories buyer at the Georges department store on Collins Street, became an iconic figure in the fashion world and known for importing the hip pieces of the time. Barro continues to do so through her own shop, which has now moved to the Paris end of Collins Street after many years in Flinders Lane. “I was a young design student in Melbourne in the ’80s and Georges was our mecca,” Grant says. “It's where people like Christine was bringing in the coolest designs that us art and fashion students adored.” Grant prioritised sustainable design long before it became a fashion buzz-phrase and this approach, even as his collections grow, remains business as usual. “I have always been committed to slow fashion and quality,” he says. ● Impeccable pieces by Martin Grant, spring/summer 2019.

n an era of viral hits and social media pecking orders, New Zealand pop singer Robinson took a chance when she posted her songs online. Now, the 22-year-old singer, dubbed the next Kimbra or Lorde, proves she’s got what it takes to make it in the music industry. Growing up in a musical family in Nelson, New Zealand, Robinson (or Anna as she is known to family and friends) hit the jackpot when she started posting songs on SoundCloud and YouTube.

The artist, who spent her teenage years living in Australia, says touring was front-of-mind after finishing high school. “I wanted to be out on the road performing,” says Robinson. “I wrote a bunch of songs after high school and played Crave You to a friend of mine, and he was like, ‘Anna, this is really good’.” “I finished the chorus and he recorded it for me. Three months later I got a message from my now manager, Ashley Page, who wanted

The delicate pop track is as brutally honest as it gets. It has been streamed more than 50 million times worldwide and certified platinum in Australia. Now signed to Sony Music, the emerging star, with a new single Karma under her belt, is about to head to SXSW, a rite-of-passage for any musician looking to break into the US market. “I remember being 14 and begging mum to take me to LA. I was obsessed with America, I wanted to live there,” says Robinson who cites Fleetwood Mac, Bonnie Raitt and Ariana Grande as influences. “Now I have a chance to play there and take my music around the world. LEARNING CURVES

T

he first year of primary school can be both an exciting and anxious time for young students and their parents. But how can you know your child is ready for school next year? According to the experts, it’s not just about his or her academic skills. Associate professor Kay Margetts with the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education says ensuring your child is ready for school is linked to their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. “Children’s adjustment to school is supported when they are adaptable and cooperative and have some basic understanding of letters of the alphabet and numbers,” Margetts says. She says children who are sociable and join groups, initiate conversations, include others, have self-control and can resist temptations, share and take turns, are confident to try new things and cope

with new situations are able to deal with challenges, disappointments and conflict and better able to cope with the demands of school life. Claire Vellios, director and educator at Malin Friends Nursery and Kindergartens in Melbourne agrees. She says the focus for kindergarten teachers is on the development of skills in children’s physical, social, emotional, communication and cognitive areas to prepare them for school. “Prep and school is a much bigger physical environment [than kindergarten], there are many more people and people that are unknown initially to children,” Vellios says. “Children need to be able to manage themselves within this space and have definitely the ability to solve problems or difficulties they may encounter, skills such as finding a teacher to ask for help.” While developing social and emotional skills is important, getting to know their new surroundings

GETTY IMAGES

Prep timed to perfection can be an important part of young students adjusting to school. “I think it is important for children to make as many visits to the school as possible before commencing, parents can help their children by making extra visits such as walking past the school on the weekend, looking at the grounds and talking about the transition in a positive and exciting way,” Vellios says. “Most children will be very happy and excited to be starting prep. Parents and teachers can be available to talk about any concerns, feelings or difficulties the children may have and talk through these.” ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

EDUCATION & INNOVATION

Me & My Mentor

OSCAR GEERTS & CHRIS CAPEWELL

Y

ear 9 student Oscar Geerts and ELTHAM College’s deputy head of mathematical and scientific thinking, Chris Capewell, are fascinated by mathematics. Since Chris spotted Oscar’s outstanding mathematical talents in year 6, the two have spent countless hours working together on high-level mathematical concepts and projects. They constantly encourage each other to delve deeper and learn more.

I joined ELTHAM College as an early learning student and my favourite subjects have always been maths and science, particularly physics because it requires more maths. I enjoy the fact that maths is open ended and there is always something more to learn, I find that exciting. Because I enjoy maths, I’m inspired to learn new things and I spend a lot of time at school and outside of school exploring the subject, so that’s helped me advance in my studies. I do a maths extension program at ELTHAM every Wednesday lunchtime and I’m in a team of students who are designing a model formula one car as part of the F1 in Schools STEM program. In my spare time I also do a lot of computer programming and coding. I like the passion that Chris and I share for maths – his enthusiasm rubs off on me and we push each other. He helps me progress with maths by asking questions I wouldn’t normally have to answer in a regular class. Chris gives me more of a challenge and sticks with me as I work out that challenge. We never give up on a question – however long it takes. It becomes a bit of an obsession for both of us! Recently we’ve worked on trying to figure out the answer of one divided by zero because it is undefined. The investigation of that was very outthere and used very advanced methods. But Chris understands my fascination with those kinds of mathematical problems. After graduating from ELTHAM College, I want to complete a maths degree at university, like Chris did. Then I want to work in maths or science, perhaps in astrophysics. But while I am still here at school Chris and I plan to keep working together on many more mathematical problems and projects.

LUIS ENRIQUE ASCUI

OSCAR SAYS ...

C H R I S CA PE W E L L & O S CA R G E E R T S

CHRIS SAYS ... I joined ELTHAM College in late 2014 to teach mathematics while another teacher was on long service leave ... and I refused to leave! This was the first school I’d taught at where I was encouraged to do some weird and wonderful projects involving maths and science, and Oscar has been involved in many of those. Oscar was a great part of me applying for the budget for us to create a computer from scratch – we had to pick the parts and students put it together over a few lunchtimes. I have also started a “Not Chess Club”. We do anything but play chess and encourage strategic and critical thinking. The school has been a great support with that and this year we’re adding to our maths enrichment program for years 5 to 9. I met Oscar in a year 6 maths class and I noticed he was essentially capable of doing year 11 work. I thought he was just playing around, so I asked him to explain what he was doing and he did it perfectly.

I brought him questions about a new mathematical concept the next day and Oscar picked it up immediately. So I went to my head of department and asked, ‘What are we doing to help this student?’ That’s how our relationship at school started. Other people’s eyes glaze over when they see what Oscar and I are doing with maths, but he is so engaged with the subject. He will ask a follow-up question I hadn’t thought of and so I learn more. He quite often has me baffled. We find a question we don’t know the answer to and spend weeks chatting about it and working it out. We are both stubborn and must work out the answers using our own methods. Oscar constantly encourages me to tackle questions I’d probably avoided raising in a classroom previously because I know they will be challenging. He has no concern for the boundaries around our maths curriculum – sometimes I think it’s Oscar who mentors me, rather than me mentoring him. ● SARAH MARINOS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Meander down the garden path leading to this abode and you’ll find mid-century character lifted by an unpretentious makeover. The owners value the high ceilings, the natural light and having space outdoors, not to mention a location that underwrites family satisfaction, with transport and daily destinations in easy reach. On buying the house two years ago, the owners planned to renovate, rearrange and extend. As life got in the way, the plans remain on the table, leaving the canvass enticingly blank for people who prefer to add their own stamp. The introductory garden is big, neat and leafy. Along with an assortment of low-maintenance natives, are fruit trees including apricot, nectarine and plum. Through the timber-and-glass front door, the entrance foyer has an open doorway to the lounge, where Tasmanian oak floors and a slow-combustion heater in a brick fireplace create a warm welcome. In perfect nick, the original, sash windows frame garden vistas with old-school gravitas. While all three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes, a door to the deck gives the rear bedroom an indoor-outdoor advantage, suggesting it is the likely main. The bathroom is next to the laundry, and the only toilet is separate. A strip of black and white tiling provides retro edge in the kitchen and meals area, which has a tiled splashback, gas cooktop and wall oven. A quirky vestibule connects the kitchen and meals area with the deck. Knock out the wall between the kitchen-meals area and vestibule for greater flow between indoors and out. The deck has a solid canopy and spotted gum base.

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon

Make your home stand out

MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO

from the crowd, use Leeder

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
