The word “athleisure” was added this year to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. It seems the decade-long debate over a most misunderstood garment – leggings, whether they qualified as pants and should be worn in public – has been put to rest. Leggings for the win, helped along by the general casualisation of fashion and brands like P.E Nation conquering this category (with wellcut fabric and a suction quality to give you a silhouette like Kim Kardashian on an airbrushed day). Designer Pip Edwards is the queen of gym-meets-the-street. Meet her in this week’s cover story. ●

AMFF (Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival) has more than 70 events and goes from March 4 to 14. How to pick out the best? Here are some standouts.
NATIONAL GRADUATE SHOWCASE \ Sure,
newcomers to the fashion festival want to see the big names on the runway. But, often, the show with the most frisson is the one that features graduate students from across Australia. These kids aren’t usually trying to make collections that can be worn straight off the runway; they want to get noticed. Sometimes the results are spectacular, sometimes puzzling, but the fun is not knowing what to expect. Friday, March 13, 6pm. Tickets from $39.
Comedian Celeste Barber’s Instagram has been poking fun at magazine and model poses for ages (to the delight of the people she pokes fun at), but it was her bushfire relief fundraiser that really catapulted her to celebrity status. She’s already walked international runways – Tom Ford used her in 2019 for New York Fashion Week – but there are other reasons to attend. Featured designers are Aje, Ginger & Smart, Jason Grech, Manning Cartell, Viktoria + Woods, Rebecca Vallance, Rachel Gilbert, SIR and Matin. Front row tickets available. Thursday, March 12, 7pm. Tickets from $59. AUSTRALIAN FASHION SUMMIT \ If you want to do more than simply see Barber on the runway – where she will no doubt have crowds in stitches – hear her insights during the conversation, “Who Really Has Influence Today?” Also in the line-up is Australian editor-in-chief Laura Brown of US InStyle magazine. Bonus: $50 from each ticket goes towards the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. Friday, March 13, from 9am-5.30pm, $499. HOW TWO LIVE \ You might have been following lookalike fashion sisters Jess and Stef Dadon on their Instagram page. But this pair is more about influencing; they’re also fashion entrepreneurs (with their own shoe label, Twoobs) and have a podcast for which they’ve interviewed Meg Ryan, Dita Von Teese and Erin Brockovich. At VAMFF, they will live-record their podcast with a free discussion at The Plaza with industry identities. Wednesday, March 11; Thursday, March 12, 6pm.

Walking the talk VIRGIN AUSTRALIA GRAND SHOWCASE FEATURING MATICEVSKI \ Which fashion
aficionado hasn’t swooned over the frothy concoctions that Toni Maticevski always delivers? This year’s Virgin Australia Grand Showcase features a solo show by the red carpet master, which will include his current designs as well as some of his archival pieces, that will explain to the novice why he has held such an exalted place in Australian fashion for the past two decades. Plus there’s a goodie bag, with $100 in Priceline gifts. Thursday, March 12, 8.30pm. Tickets from $59. NOCTURNAL X FASHION \ Night owl? Check. The
festival’s after-dark party at the Melbourne Museum combines culture (Mojo Juju in a DJ set) and Chunky Move dance company wearing Romance Was Born threads, among other big names in the line-up: Banoffee, Rainbow Chan, Purple Sneakers
and more. There are pop-up bars, fashion films and live music. The beats go on until 11pm. Friday, March 6, 7pm. Tickets from $25, this is an over-18s event. HUGS BY HEIDE X PATRICIA PICCININI X ALPHA60 \ Wanna eavesdrop on a conversation between renowned artist Patricia Piccinini (as part of a showcased exhibition) and the duo behind quirky label Alpha60, Georgie and Alex Cleary? Even better, it’s at Heide Museum of Modern Art at twilight, as part of VAMFF’s independent program. Expect the talk to centre on the two themes of nurture and nature that are embedded in Piccinini’s artworks: conversation, wine and museum admission included. ● Sunday, March 8, 5.30-7.30pm, tickets from $30.

f you thought athleisure wear hit fever pitch back in 2016, you can thank fashion designers Claire Tregoning and Pip Edwards (opposite) for keeping the momentum going. Together they run the successful empire P.E Nation – a brand whose DNA is as sun-kissed as the beaches you’ll find them on in their downtime. Now they’re the first Australian brand to collaborate with Swedish retailer H&M to take their sporty vision to the world. Known for their colour blocking, logo straps and chic active wear, the P.E Nation X H&M collection will be available globally from the end of February. The limited edition range comes at an affordable price and will no doubt woo their fitness loving army keen to add to their memorabilia. The new range is less about logo sharing with the Swedes and more about showing the globe how Aussies handle their active wear. But more than capturing a few gym looks fit enough for a streetwear strut, the collaboration will have a fashion component, too. Think skirts and jackets, undergarments, swimwear. And where would we be without a ’90s revival bumbag? Edwards remembers checking her emails last year and thinking she’d been pranked. “I thought it was a joke when I read the email,” she recalls of the offer to collaborate. “Then Claire and I jumped on the phone to H&M and they had 12 people on loud speaker with us. Before we knew it, the deal was done.” H&M spotted the brand via York stockist Bandier, and the rest of their success is due to the organic cotton and recycled polyester they use, taking a fitspo look from Instagram posts to the streets. It probably helped that Kim Kardashian has worn the brand and given it the thumbs up. “We designed the entire collection based on our best sellers; it’s more like a retrospective,” Edwards says of what to expect. “H&M provided us with a colour palette and we used our P.E Nation DNA,” she adds, hinting there’s plenty of pink and tan colour-ways. The friends jetted off to Sweden and China to work with the retail giant, taking in the excitement of the lucrative deal. They’re in the company of Alexander Wang and Stella
McCartney who have also collaborated with H&M, but they’re the first designers in the brand’s history to be photographed in the campaign too. “We’re the first active wear collaboration they have ever done and one of the first Aussie designers they have ever picked,” an excited Edwards says. “You work hard to get your brand out there in various markets and eventually it all falls into place. The retailer had been following us keenly and really understood our mentality. We’re a fashion active wear brand that creates performance wear that’s street credible and comfortable.” Edwards, who got her start as a fashion designer at sass & bide, Ksubi and as design director at General Pants Co, has found her creative niche with P.E Nation. She’s avidly on social media and doesn’t shy from that spotlight.
“All we wanted to do was find women with whom the brand would resonate ... It’s grown larger than we could ever imagine.” PIP EDWARDS
With more than 159,000 following her every movement on Instagram, Edwards is the perfect pin-up for her brand – a Pilates-loving beach babe who is as much at home in a new snow collection in Europe skiing as she is conditioning her tanned abs in a Pilates class. The 40-year-old mother of one (son Justice, aged nine, with former partner Dan Single who started Ksubi) says working with her best friend Tregoning works perfectly for the ambitious duo. They’ve taken part in Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Sydney, showcased at Pitti Uomo in Florence and took part in the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival last year. Now they’ve got their eye on a new snow collection for winter. “When we started out, all we wanted to do was find women with whom the brand would resonate,” Edwards says. “It’s grown larger than we could ever imagine.” Edwards doesn’t chase trends – she sets them – and the brand’s meteoric rise is proof enough the duo has the vision to take it the next level.

“We want the world to know about us,” Edwards says. “And if you thought athleisure wear was on the way out, you’re wrong. The demand is stronger than ever. “I feel it’s really a great time for our brand to shine and this opportunity to be on a world stage and be recognised globally is a huge step for us. It’s amazing for us to have this sort of global footprint.” The activewear-meets-fashion philosophy might sound like an easy coming together, but it’s the way the P.E Nation duo have made their mark that puts them in a league of their own. “We have a definite personality; a P.E Nation girl is confident and has a lot of fun,” Edwards says. “Claire and I love our fitness, health and fashion and it’s our love for these things that comes through the brand. That’s what keeps us going.” ● ● pe-nation.com ● hm.com/au

hristian Kimber may not be a name you’re very familiar with but he’s quietly been making tracks in the Australian menswear fashion space, going from strength to strength – or garment to garment – as he establishes what is fast becoming one of the country’s best boutique menswear labels. Hailing from East Sussex in the United Kingdom, the 31-year old – based in Melbourne – has
immersed himself in menswear for as long as he can remember, learning from fashion courses, internships and workshops at a variety of haberdashers across London. “My background in menswear fashion is quite interesting. I have done a pattern-making course, worked in shoe design, illustration workshops, fashion PR internships, worked as a buyer and stylist – I just wanted to learn as much as I could about the industry,” Kimber says. “My journey in fashion has also been about discovering who I am as an individual. I wasn’t sure where I [fitted] in after finishing school, and although I loved men’s clothing and wanted to design, I didn’t necessarily know what skills I had to do so.” Kimber worked in and around Savile Row, London’s home of bespoke tailoring, learning the delicate art of classical men’s tailoring, as well as working for a notable shoemaker where he developed a natural affinity for the craft – the catalyst for the first Christian Kimber product. “I absolutely love shoe design because it is just so technical. The journey of making a pair of shoes
from scratch is truly beautiful,” he says. It wasn’t until 2012 that he decided to take the plunge and move to Australia, where he quickly felt that the menswear scene lacked character and soul. “I started my business in 2013 after living in Australia for a year. I saw a gap in the market between casual and formal menswear and, really, I just wanted to create garments that could be worn to work or on the weekend,” Kimber says. “Shoe design was also going through a moment that saw a lot of people with the same idea: design a medium price casual shoe which had a great design.” Fast forward to 2015, when Kimber officially launched his first line of smart-casual footwear. “I started off designing chukka boots, tassel loafers and sneakers because I wanted these three styles but couldn’t afford to buy them. So, I just made them. This whole business has been about what I have wanted to wear at the time,” Kimber says. “The Australian lifestyle is quite relaxed so sneakers, in particular, resonated really well with my customers. I have always loved sneakers and the
casualness of them, but it doesn’t mean they have to be made poorly.” From its inception, Christian Kimber quickly built a loyal following. Sneakers would sell out soon after launching, and custom-made accessories such as city-based pocket chiefs were seen all around town. Menswear is now on the agenda; Kimber was the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival National Designer Award winner last year. “As a brand, I want to reach out to guys who might not know about menswear but just want to look and feel good about themselves,” Kimber says. “My overarching goal since the beginning has been to work towards this concept of redefining Australian style and what that means. “What I’m trying to stand for, and develop, is clothing that is lifestyle-focused but can still be elegant, and I think it’s never been a cooler time in menswear because you can wear anything and everything.” ● CHRISTIAN KIMBER \ 264 Johnston Street, Fitzroy ● christiankimber.com

The owner-builder really went to town here, with his 21st-century take on homestead living excelling from the big picture (and we mean big) to the detail, flaunting living spaces galore and a poise born of outstanding trappings. Out of doors, extras turn the property in to a leisure-lover’s paradise, with exercise options and fabulous provision for entertaining al fresco. And entertaining is pretty much mandatory here. It would be criminal not to. The interior design matches neutral tones in walls and floors with individual flourishes. The wallpaper is sophisticated and decorative light fittings add a flashy edge. A lengthy driveway adds suspense to the approach. That suspense ends sweetly on sighting the sandstone pile with a wraparound verandah and solar panels on the roof. Saunter in through the front door, and a foyer with cove ceiling detail and a post-modernist chandelier hints at the luxe style to come. The central hall leads right to sleeping quarters and left to social spaces. The minor bedrooms share a powder room and a massive bathroom. The main suite offers full-on amenity with two walk-in wardrobes and a double-shower en suite in addition to its spacious, slumber chamber. In the social wing, you’ll find a study opposite a lounge and dining room. The study has a desk. Fashioned for all seasons, the lounge and dining room has a wood fire in a sandstone alcove and two sets of doors to the rear verandah. Next up, a rumpus room precedes the kitchen, family and meals hub. The staircase in the hub descends to the cinema (with powder room and bar while three sets of doors open

MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
