The AFLW players possess the kind of courage I hope will develop in all the young women I know, particularly my little niece. She, unlike me, has a chance for football – the sport I loved growing up and still love today – to be much more in her life, if she chooses. The women’s league season started this month and the curtain-raising Geelong and Collingwood clash drew more than 18,000 fans. North Melbourne and Geelong are new teams this season, and in this edition we meet the Kangaroos’ Kaitlyn Ashmore, whose passion for the blue and white stripes runs deep. ●

FIRST PERSON
““I am James Tutton ” … and I’m an entrepreneur who helps people meditate I always knew that I was unemployable. I didn’t take direction from other people at all well, so I think I’ve always been aware that I’d work for myself. When I was at university I worked as a doorman and sold clothing at markets, and in my final year I started Moonlight Cinema, which I sold to a public company in my early 30s. Then, I had an entertainment business in LA before coming back to Australia and going into business with Jeff Provan at Neometro about 10 years ago. About five and a half years ago I established Smiling Mind with Jane Martino, which is a notfor-profit focused on preventative mental health tools for young people, specifically based in mindfulness meditation. We have 3.5 million downloads of our app, we’re working with hundreds of thousands of students, and have a workplace program that’s used in corporate organisations across Australia. I say this jokingly, but I went bald at 22 and was driving a Porsche in my mid-20s, so I’d done the traditional mid-life crisis things really early on. I was 39 when we started Smiling Mind and I thought, “Right, I’m going to have a positive mid-life crisis”, which, for me, involved putting my energy into something that could have a significant and beneficial social impact. I’ve also had a long-term interest in mental health. I’ve seen people close to me experience schizophrenia and post-natal depression. I wouldn’t for a second say that mindfulness and meditation are a silver bullet, but it’s clinically shown that they can lower the risk of the onset of a whole gamut of mental heath conditions. Making money is not my goal in life. I’m far more interested in using what skills I have as an entrepreneur to have a positive social impact. That’s not to say I don’t have to pay my school fees, because I do, but I didn’t want my children to go, “...that’s all he did with his life”. I felt a responsibility to show them that if you have some entrepreneurial skills and chutzpah, you can do really positive social things. ●

PE T E R BA R R E T T
If Dr Airlie Chapman has anything to do with it, fighting bushfires is soon going to become a whole lot more safe and effective. The University of Melbourne mechatronic engineer was one of five recipients (all of whom are in the early years of their careers) of a L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship late last year. Dr Chapman specialises in the science of robotic swarming: she designs and tests algorithms that allow semiautonomous vehicles to collaborate with each other. She says these machines, which are inspired by natural swarming creatures, could one day be sent to hover above bushfire fronts and communicate crucial information in real time to human firefighters below. Mine-mapping, search and rescue, and agricultural monitoring are just a few other areas her “robot swarms” could help with in the future. “I like the idea of being able to think of something and see that creation come to life,” she says. “I can effectively write an algorithm and make robots dance to my mathematics.” PROFESSOR MICHELLE SIMMONS
The 2018 Australian of the Year, Professor Michelle Simmons, is leading the international race for the quantum supercomputer. Her team at the Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology count the development of the world’s first single-atom transistor among their many achievements. Simmons is excited by the prospect of extending our understanding of the very small: how individual atoms work and interact, thus changing how we understand nature. “We’re creating things that have never existed before at the level of atoms and ... I think it will help us understand the way the body [and the mind] works”.

PROFESSOR TOBY WALSH
Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith came to Australia from Britain “for the weather” just over a decade ago and stayed. This gifted astronomer first read Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time at 14 and was immediately transported into a world of hard, cutting-edge physics. Today, Harvey-Smith leads a team of PhD students hunting for black holes using the Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope in Western Australia. “We’re watching galaxies colliding together and then black holes emerging and we’re figuring out how much the black holes weigh. It’s quite amazing, really,” she says. Harvey-Smith also dedicates time to communicate science to the public, including on her recent When Galaxies Collide national tour (also a book), and on ABC Television where she presents Stargazing Live.
Intelligence and robotics expert Professor Toby Walsh explains how he became an accidental activist. In 2015 Professor Walsh penned an open letter calling for a ban on autonomous weapons. It was endorsed by thousands of AI and robotics researchers, not to mention Stephen Hawking and tech entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak. Since then, the Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at University of NSW has spoken about the dangers of “killer robots” at the United Nations several times. “I feel a real duty, like scientists before me … to speak out and warn about the risks.” Among many predictions, the author of 2062: The World that AI Made, says that by 2050 Austalia’s robot soccer team will be able to beat Germany’s national (human) team. Why Germany? “My wife’s German, so I like to pull her leg.” ●

Accessories favourite Mimco looks to the National Gallery of Victoria for inspiration for its latest collection.
I
SENIOR
LIANE HURVITZ
n January, a swarm of media personalities and influencers descended on the National Gallery of Victoria, each one dressed from head to (stilet)toe in a single hue of their choice. They certainly stood out against the mostly black-andwhite backdrop within, where a “house of Escher” had been repeated across the walls and floor of the NGV’s Gallery Kitchen, design studio Nendo’s response to the works of Dutch artist M.C. Escher. Was this a group of art aficionados? Fashion followers? A bit of both, actually. The two worlds married for accessory brand Mimco’s launch of their MIMCO x NGV capsule collection, which took inspiration from the latest NGV exhibition Escher x Nendo/Between Two Worlds. Not that this crowd was between either world: for one night, everyone had, at the fore, an eye on design. This is Mimco’s second capsule collection – they also did one for NGV’s triennial exhibition – and it demonstrates the extent to which design takes precedence in Melbourne and beyond. NGV has capably leapt outside of the world of an art-only crowd – witness the guest list of their recent gala, which included Hollywood actress Natalie Portman – and so it makes sense that Mimco’s extending the way its customers see the brand, too. To make that happen, it was never going to be a case of slapping some heavily derivative Escher images onto earrings and scarves. Says Mimco’s senior designer Sophie Begg: “Even though in reality we are a business that is commercial, we also pride ourselves on being design-led and working through the artistic process. Our focus was to make our own unique pieces that [Japanese design studio] Nendo
DESIGNER S O PH I E B E G G
worked with and Escher worked with, but to no point imitate those designers or that artist. It meant going back to the fundamentals of the work, looking at the manipulation of basic geometric forms, and themes.” The result is an accessories collection that one can’t immediately link to Escher (or Nendo), but the link is clear: tessellate earrings, scarves and rings mimic the idea (rather than the execution) behind Escher’s tessellation drawings, where one graphic image folds into its opposite, creating an illusion that only one appears on the page. “People look at the pieces and find them beautiful in their own right, but others question how they relate [to the
Wo r d s
exhibition]. That’s the point. It gets people to look into it further.” And the collection also manages to echo another important design movement: the one that insists on individuality over insta-viduality. “Mimco has always worked this way – looking to artists, architects, design and art movements, but ensuring we create our own unique product. Collaborations show their transparency to our customer. Fashion brands worldwide have been forced to really work with their own original ideas. If ideas are not your own, everything’s on the internet – you’ll be found out. It places more importance on working from a place of true originality.” ●

As javelin star-turnedfootballer Kaitlyn Ashmore spears a new AFLW team, the next generation is on her mind.
hen Kaitlyn Ashmore was selected by the Brisbane Lions as a priority draft pick ahead of the inaugural 2017 AFLW season, she was both excited and a little unnerved. “I didn’t know who was going to be in Brisbane as far as the team went, and I didn’t know anyone in Brisbane,” she recalls. “Actually, I’d never even been to Brisbane. The furthest I’d been away from Ballarat was Melbourne, and I’d only moved there three months before.”
The Ashmores are a close family; when Kaitlyn broke the news, her mother couldn’t comprehend it. “She said, ‘But you can’t! Women don’t go interstate to play footy!’ ” Indeed they do. And sometimes they come home, too. To her North Melbourne Kangaroo-supporting brother Leigh’s delight, Ashmore has suited up for the burgeoning national competition’s 2019 season in blue and white stripes, a key member of one of two new teams (alongside

“Pa was an old-school guy, just loved footy,” she says. “I’d do athletics but he’d never come and watch, or if he did, he’d just sit in the stands and not say anything. I’d be happy because I threw a PB; he’d be like, ‘Yeah, that was good.’ He was just a football head.” When she took up school footy her grandfather was in the crowd; after she joined North Ballarat, aged 18, he was there every weekend. After a stroke took her beloved pa in 2011, Ashmore joined Melbourne University’s women’s team, made the state side the following year and has been a serious player ever since. While Brisbane was initially daunting, Ashmore now regards her two seasons there as an awakening. She missed home terribly, not least
her dalmatian Billie, she says, but felt herself grow. “I was a very a shy girl. Now I’m in the North Melbourne leadership group, and I don’t think that would have happened if I hadn’t got out of my comfort zone.” She loves football’s small-world, familial feel; Kangaroos captain Emma Kearney, along with teammates Ash Riddell and Kate Gillespie-Jones, are old Melbourne Uni comrades, while Jenna Bruton is another Ballarat girl. And there are other teammates she’s been longing to play alongside. “Jasmine Garner’s going to be a star.” At the Lions, Ashmore played in two grand finals for two heartbreakingly narrow losses. It excites her to think how strong the AFLW will be when the girls who are starting Auskick now push into the big league. “I just wish I had that when I was younger. Hopefully I’m still going in 10 years’ time.” ●

Rites of passage Rural experiences can help year 9 students transition into young adulthood.
I
t may not be every 15-year-old’s idea of a good time to spend months living at school or in the bush, without a phone, social media or television. But it’s not unusual for year 9 students at independent schools around Victoria to participate in extended excursions away from home. And several schools have rural campuses, where year 9 students can hike, run, chop firewood, cook and clean, as part of their formal education. Year 9 students at Methodist Ladies’ College can choose to attend Marshmead, a rural campus in East Gippsland, for eight weeks. Wesley College has a country campus in Clunes, outside of Ballarat. Prince Charles famously attended Geelong Grammar School’s rural campus, Timbertop, for two terms in 1966, when he slept in tents and took
part in cross-country hikes. So what’s significant about this age group, and what makes it a popular time for students to experience life away from home? Tom Hall, head of Timbertop, which is compulsory for year 9 students at Geelong Grammar, says it can be a “problematic” year level for students in a traditional school setting. “For many young people, year 9 can be a no man’s land between middle school and senior school. They’re too old for the younger parts of the school and they’re not quite old enough for the rest,” he says. Hall believes that rural education programs, especially ones with various physical, mental or academic challenges, give students a “rite of passage” typically missing from year 9.

Students at Timbertop attend regular academic lessons. But they also participate in a range of physical challenges, including a running program that culminates in a 33-kilometre run. They do not have access to the internet or their phones, and they have to perform a range of domestic chores, such as cutting wood to fire the boiler that heats their showers. “They live a simple existence, but they live in close connection with the natural world, and they can be responsible for themselves,” Hall says. “It’s a wonderful thing to see that transition from childhood to young adulthood and that happening both with their maturity, their intellectual and academic capacity and their physical capacity as well.” Year 9 students at Lauriston Girls’ School in Armadale spend most of their school at Howqua, a
campus three hours away from Melbourne in Victoria’s High Country. The girls participate in normal academic lessons, as well as an outdoor and fitness program that includes canoeing, rock climbing, skiing and camping. “We believe that year 9 is a good time to send our students to Howqua because girls are ready to face new challenges and are keen to make new friends,” says Lauriston principal Susan Just. The hope is that a year at Howqua will help students embrace challenge, independence and selfconfidence, skills that will help prepare them for VCE. “Our year 9 students return to year 10 with more self-confidence and independence,” Just says. “They know how to organise their time and set goals. They know the other girls in their year level and feel more of a sense of belonging, which is important for the senior years.” ●

ears 11 and 12 can be a challenging time for students, who face all sorts of pressures around academic success and personal development. With Mission Australia finding that one in four young people are at risk of serious mental illness, many schools are focusing on wellbeing as part of a more holistic education. “It underpins everything,” says Mara Vanderzeil, head of student wellbeing at Yarra Valley Grammar. “If a child is healthy and feeling safe, and mentally

well, then they’re going to be able to achieve their potential. For them to be able to learn, they need to be well.” Students face a variety of pressures both inside and outside the classroom. “They’re becoming adults,” Vanderzeil says. “They’ve got relationships with people, even the fact that they’re becoming learner drivers ... there are so many different aspects.” The ubiquity of social media can also exacerbate things. “There are so many images, and there is so much information coming in all the time,” she says. “One of the things we try to teach is the mindfulness side of things. To be in the actual moment and focus in on one thing.” It’s an approach that has served Noah McGrath, a year 12 student at Brighton Grammar, well. McGrath says that he puts all his focus into whatever he’s working on – whether revising for a test or training for sport – so that he doesn’t get distracted or overwhelmed. “Say I had a test on Friday and I know that Wednesday and Thursday I’ll have soccer training,”
“If a child is healthy and feeling safe, and mentally well, then they’re going to be able to achieve their potential.” MARA VANDERZEIL
he explains, “in class on that Wednesday and Thursday I’ll remove myself from my peers and focus significantly on study. I’ll get two hours of quality work in.” He says the students at the school openly chat with each other about how they’re going. “I talk to a lot of the rowing boys about how they deal with [pressures]. A lot of people do different things. I probably focus more on being in the moment and trying to get everything out of every minute, whereas other students are really good at managing their time outside of school.” The school has a wellbeing committee, and McGrath says that it’s “awesome” that they encourage students to book in to see a psychologist if they have something they want to discuss.
Brighton Grammar has also introduced a camp that year 10 students go on with their fathers, or father figures. “You can talk about anything,” Noah says, “and you won’t be judged… it was just good that I could ask [dad] questions about how he’s gone through life. He’s experienced similar things to me.” Yarra Valley Grammar, meanwhile, is partnering with The Resilience Project on materials for homeroom teachers and year co-ordinators from prep right through to year 12. It’s all part of a drive to embed wellbeing across the school. “The education that we provide is not just academic,” Vanderzeil says. “It’s so many things. And to feel connected, you really want students to feel like they’re part of a community.” ● ANDERS FURZE

At its Ordinary Meeting on 11 December 2018, Moonee Valley City Council (Council) Council) resolved to give notice of its Council intention to declare a Special Rate and Charge (Scheme). Scheme Scheme). Council intends to declare the Scheme at its Ordinary Meeting on 14 May 2019. The Scheme will be for the purposes of defraying expenses to be incurred by Council in providing funds to the Moonee Ponds Rate Levy Association (Association). Association). The Scheme funds are to be used to fund a part-time Shopping Centre Coordinator, promotional, Association advertising, marketing, business development and other incidental expenses as approved by Council and agreed between Council and the Association, all of which are associated with the encouragement of commerce, retail and professional activity and employment in the Moonee Ponds Activity Centre (Business Business Precinct Precinct). The Scheme will be based on geographic criteria, having regard to the location and capital improved value of rateable properties in the Business Precinct that are used, or reasonably capable of being used, for commercial, retail or professional purposes. Council considers that each rateable property and each business included in the Scheme area that is required to pay the Special Rate and Charge will receive a special benefit because the viability of the Business Precinct as a commercial, retail and professional area will be enhanced through increased economic activity. The Scheme is intended to raise funds in performing functions and exercising powers in relation to activities associated with the encouragement of commerce and retail activity in and around the area the Scheme applies to. Council intends to levy and spend $190,000 in the first year of the Scheme, which will increase by $10,000 in each year of the Scheme. The Scheme will raise $1.05 million over its five year period, which is the total cost of performing the functions and exercising the powers associated with the Scheme. The Scheme is to be declared, and will remain in force, from 1 July 2019 until 30 June 2024. The Special Rate and Charge will be assessed based on the following: a) an 80 per cent Special Rate component calculated by multiplying the capital improved value of each property by a rate in the dollar (adjusted annually); b) a 20 per cent fixed Special Charge component assessed as a flat charge of $68.84 in the first year; c) all properties not located on Puckle Street will have their rate component discounted by 20 per cent; and d) the Special Rate and Charge will be capped at a maximum amount of $5,000 per rated property per year. The total amount of the Special Rate and Charge is to be collected, and will increase by $10,000 in each year of the Scheme for the remaining four years of the Scheme. Council will levy the Special Rate and Charge by sending a notice of levy annually to the persons who are liable to pay it. The notice will require the Special Rate and Charge to be paid in one instalment, by the date specified in the notice. Council will consider cases of financial and other hardship and may reconsider other payment options for the Special Rate and Charge. No incentives will be given for early payment. Council estimates the proportion of the total benefits of the Scheme (including all special benefits and community benefits) that will accrue as special benefits to those liable to pay the Special Rate and Charge is 100%. This is because, in Council’s opinion, all of the services and activities to be provided with the Special Rate and Charge funds are marketing, promotion and advertising related and will only benefit those properties and businesses included in the Scheme that are used, or reasonably capable of being used, for retail, commercial or professional purposes. Copies of the proposed declaration of the Special Rate and Charge and a plan showing the land and properties required to pay the Special Rate and Charge are available for inspection at Council’s offices, 9 Kellaway Avenue, Moonee Ponds, VIC 3039. These will be available during normal business hours for at least 28 days after the publication of this notice. Any person may make a written submission to the Council on the Special Rate and Charge. In addition, an owner or occupier of land who will be required to pay the Special Rate and Charge has a right to make a written objection to the Council. An occupier of a property included in the Scheme is entitled to object if they submit documentary evidence with the objection showing that it is a condition of their lease that they are to pay the Special Rate and Charge. Written submissions or objections must be received by Council by 22 March 2019, 5pm. Submissions and/or objections must be in writing and addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Bryan Lancaster, Moonee Valley City Council, 9 Kellaway Avenue, Moonee Ponds, VIC 3039 or business@mvcc.vic.gov.au. Any person who has made a written submission and has requested to be heard in support of their written submission is entitled to appear in person or to be represented by a person specified in the submission before a Council Committee on Monday 1 April, 2019 at 5.30pm at Council’s offices, 9 Kellaway Avenue Moonee Ponds. Council will consider any written submissions and take into account any objections in determining whether to declare the Special Rate and Charge. If you would like further information about the proposed Special Rate and Charge, please contact Nadine Muscat, Business Development Officer, Economic Development, phone 03 9243 8888 or email business@mvcc.vic.gov.au.
