JACK JONES THE DIGGER & A FL GRE AT ON THE SPIRIT OF FOOT Y & FA MILY M O O N E E VA L L E Y

The editor’s desk

Our cover this week celebrates aspects of Victorian life that connect us across the generations. A shared love of AFL binds Sarah Jones and her grandfather Jack Jones, one of the most beloved former players at the Essendon Football Club. Sarah, a football journalist, and her Pop, also a veteran of World War II, will be at the Anzac Day match between the Bombers and Collingwood at the MCG; it’s an occasion that for them carries a gravity as big as a grand final, as it does for many Victorian families. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am JJames Ketika” … and I’m a ‘garbo’ I saw this job advertised and I just wanted to get fit again, so I took it. The ad was for a bin runner, so I was the guy running behind the truck emptying the bins. I used to box when I was younger, and I missed being athletic. If you’re doing wheelie bins in the city, you’ve got to be quick because you hold up the traffic, so you just sprint from one bin to another. When you do that all day, you get fit pretty quickly. I lost about 10 kilograms when I started. Not everyone has to run; I just wanted to put in extra. What does it take to be a good garbo? It’s your work ethic. It’s easy to die off during the day, but I never complained. There’s not too many really bad smells – just at the tip, and food that’s not in a bag. But you just cop that, and it’s all right. It’s part of the job; you can’t work as a garbo and complain about the smells. I like hard, physical work. Before this I was a grave digger, and before that I was concreting. My parents were hard workers; my dad came here from Tonga, and he worked hard so I could have a relatively good life. For the past two months I’ve been driving the truck, and doing the bigger runs for all the apartment buildings. You have to have a good sense of humour to be a driver; it’s a long day. The other guys are funny – they’re all amateur comedians. I never thought in a million years I’d be driving a truck in the city, but I’ve adapted. There’s cars on both sides, going down laneways, going in and out, pedestrians and people on scooters. I start at five o’clock and I finish at three, so it’s a 10-hour shift. I love it because it’s still dark, so you still get a while before the traffic builds up. At 7am to 7.30am, that’s when it gets a bit difficult to manoeuvre, but at five in the morning it’s perfect. I like smashing it out early and enjoying the rest of the day when I get home with my two kids. I’ve got a boy who’s four and a daughter who’s two. I feel like I’ve accomplished something and contributed to society by doing this job. I had the same kind of feeling when I was grave digging, especially when the families would thank me. My son wants to be a garbo now. Whatever job I’m doing at the moment he likes. Now he’s asking to come on the job with me. ●

COVER STORY

Anzac Day footy unites veteran Jack Jones and his granddaughter Sarah.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

J

ack Jones, 94, played in seven grand finals for his beloved Essendon Football Club, while granddaughter Sarah Jones, 36, is one of the faces of Fox Footy’s AFL coverage. They share a special bond and love of the Bombers and family, highlighted on Anzac Day. As a teenager, Jack served his country in New Guinea and Bougainville as part of the 24th Infantry Battalion during World War II. It’s a Jones family tradition to walk in the march before heading into the MCG for the traditional Essendon and Collingwood match. This year, Jack will be watching from the stands while Sarah will be at ground level hosting Fox’s broadcast. “Last year, we had 35 of the family there for the march, and all had a great time together,” Jack says. “It’s a sad day when it comes around because we lost 91 in our battalion and 197 wounded. I was one of the lucky ones, with a lot of my mates, and those poor buggers never had the chance to have a family, get married or even see their parents again. “Our battalion was mainly made up of 19-yearolds – I’d never seen a gun, hand grenade or machine gun in those days. It was hard to take in for a while, but I got through it, thank God, and now I’ve got a lovely family, Sarah and all the grandkids and great-grandkids. “But when the bugler blows the Last Post, that’s when I feel it more than anything.” For Sarah, Anzac Day is about reflection and gratitude. “It’s a really special day for our whole family, and because of Pop, we see an example of someone who went to war, fought for his country and was really lucky to come back. None of us would be here if he didn’t return. “There’s gratitude that he was one of the lucky ones and a real sense of pride in what he did because for us. It’s just a world away, what those teenagers did – it’s hard to wrap your head around

just how horrendous it would’ve been. Pop did that as a young man then came home and led a really rich life back in Australia. “Anzac Day is a really special day to celebrate Pop and all the Anzacs. Having a connection with Essendon and the Anzac Day match has really amplified that.” The Joneses were born Bombers. Jack began following Essendon in 1933 and saw Dick Reynolds play his first league game. Thirteen years later he’d play alongside his hero. “I have red in one eye and black in the other,” Jack laughs. “When I came home (from the war), I played in three premierships and seven grand finals with my idol Dick Reynolds. “It was wonderful. I was successful only because I played in a great side. You’ve got to be there at the right time with all the good players.” Sarah loves that her AFL club was chosen for her. “It was in my blood and DNA that I’d barrack for the Bombers. There was no choice – I was always going to be a Bomber. When we were kids, Pop

would take us down to the rooms to meet the players, and that was really cool, and when he worked in the club’s Hall of Fame we’d go along and watch his tours,” she recalls. “Having the footy connection is great because Pop loves footy, I love footy, and a lot of that comes from him. Essendon’s a big interest for him and part of his life that keeps him going strong at 94.” Sarah was eight when her mum died in an accident, but despite living in Echuca, her Melbourne-based Nan and Pop played a very active role in her childhood, never missing a netball final or ballet concert.

T

oday, Jack is Fox Footy’s No.1 viewer, having watched Sarah enter journalism competitions as a child, later do work experience at the Herald Sun and then land her first job in television. “Sarah is very special. The grandkids are equal, and I love them all but Sarah is on television, and no matter what day she is on TV I find her and barrack for her all the time.” Now, Sarah’s heart fills with joy watching her Pop with her daughters Mila, 4, and Halle, 2. “We have a lot of shared interests and spending time with Pop is so much fun and now seeing my daughters get to have a really great relationship with their great-grandfather is something so special,” she says. “They call him ‘Old Poppy’. We visit, and Nan makes pancakes for the girls and Pop tries to steal them, and that’s an ongoing game.” Sarah says anchoring Fox’s Anzac Day football coverage is a career highlight. “Especially as a Bomber fan and someone who really loves the occasion of Anzac Day, it’s only behind finals and the grand finals as the biggest occasion in football. “You get the chill down your spine when they do the ceremony, and it’s even more special because of my connection to Pop.” ●

ipping a cappuccino out of a china mug, while devouring a four-layered lemon coconut cake, I overhear a group of elderly ladies at a table nearby. They are reminiscing on the beauty of old Italy and the rapidly changing times. Here, I could mistake myself for being at a grandma’s house, instead I’m tucked into a cozy corner in North Melbourne off tram route 57. It has a sweet, generous and old-soul way about it. Despite the aged buildings being converted into newer establishments, the area still feels vintage, with plenty of nostalgia – including its tastes. A “camp-fire hot chocolate” from Mork Chocolate Brew House, a specialty chocolate store, smells like a night out in the woods. experience and there’s no shame here in polishing off an indulgent plate of sweets on your own. If it’s vintage you want to experience in the clothing domain, Martin Fella sells Europeanlabelled bags, accessories and even restored lamps. It’s even by the old school word-of-mouth while browsing that I am recommended to try Willow and Wine, a bar offering classic forms of entertainment, with shelves full of board games and secondhand books. However, for the more avant-garde grandmas or grandpas of Melbourne there is Quirk & Co,an eclectic gift store which sells playful and distinctive pieces, including best-selling banana lights Now all I need is a second slice of cake, perhaps a crochet rug, and a black and white photo album to show off to my new friends, two tables over. ● B E C D I C KI N S O N

irrarung Marr isn’t where you’d usually expect to find a group of students learning to fly. But in March, the riverside venue hosted the 2019 Birdman Rally – a competition that sees entrants build all kinds of human-powered aircraft. This year, St Columba’s College became the first all-girls’ school to enter the event after a team of 15 students spent five weeks designing, testing and building their craft. The students share a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics – STEM subjects that are strongly supported by the college. The St Columba’s College craft flew a respectable seven metres and students plan to enter again in 2020. Melissa D’Amico is the first STEM curriculum leader at St Columba’s College. She says the Birdman Rally was an opportunity to combine design, physics and mathematics and to make learning engaging. Students also raised $3383 for the Sisters of Charity Foundation. “The rally highlighted the girls’ ability to design and build and they learnt about flight, engineering and physics. It also showed them that STEM is fun,” D’Amico says. “The college is keen to give students futurefocused skills and hands-on skills. We have a ‘Make It Monday’ session at Monday lunchtimes where girls can make anything from a robot to something more artistic using equipment like the laser cutter and 3D-printer.” The school encourages STEM through various other initiatives, including working with the CSIRO’s STEM Professional in Schools program. Students work in the classroom with Kelsey Rowe, an electrical engineer, who helped the girls design and test the Birdman Rally craft. Ciara Cashin, 15, of year 10 says: “I like chemistry and biology and I didn’t think I liked physics until I got back into it through STEM. “I’m looking forward to studying aviation – it will extend what I learnt through the Birdman Rally. I’ll learn more about physics and how to apply theories and concepts to design and solving problems. “We learnt about concepts like air resistance and how air should be released to reach maximum distance.

A M B E R DAO, SA R A H PA M M E N T & C IA R A CA S H I N

“During the design process we’d find errors and have to research how to solve those. On the day, when I saw the craft take off, I felt very proud.” Amber Dao, 15, of year 10 says: “I am doing chemistry and biology and STEM and I decided to be part of the Birdman Rally because I also like building and constructing. “We had regular meetings and were assigned different construction tasks. You had to be committed because we were on a tight schedule. Having to change things and to go back a few steps before we could move forward again could be frustrating, but we learnt to work as a team to

get things done. I certainly want to be part of the Birdman Rally next year.” Sarah Pamment, 15, also of year 10 says: “I’ve always been interested in the problem-solving part of STEM. We had five weeks to plan and build our craft and we took it from paper to a small prototype that we tested. “Once we were happy with that, we built a craft with a four-metre wingspan. Learning theories is fun but when you apply them you learn a lot more. We were all nervous on the day wondering if our craft would work but we were happy with what we achieved in our first year.” ● SARAH MARINOS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

As the street name suggests, there are fine views to be had from this grand home basking on one of Moonee Ponds’ most attractive streets. The ornate Hawthorn-brick house is coping with the 21st century beautifully. The Victorian features have been celebrated with decor appropriate to the era. Deep cornices and corballed arches are emphasised with strong colours, and the timber skirting boards, door frames, doors and window frames are polished. Fireplaces are delightfully ornate, with high mantels and cast-iron inserts. There is leadlight by the front door and a pine dado in the study. Opening off the hallway on one side is a huge living and dining room with a dual-sided fireplace. On the other side are three bedrooms, two with fireplaces. Contemporary additions, at the rear and upstairs, have been designed in sympathy with the original style. A verandah, with traditional rails and posts, runs down the side of the house and around the back. Before we get to the living area, there is a bathroom, storeroom, workshop and another bedroom or study with a fireplace. The living zone comprises a family area set into a huge bay window, plus the kitchen and meals sections. Timber-lined ceilings bring a sense of warmth. French-provincial in style, the kitchen has a magnificent red Ilve Majestic cooker set into a recess with a mantle above, along with granite benchtops, soft-close drawers, a farmhouse sink and a Liebherr fridge. There is excellent storage, and the laundry and powder room are tucked
