Would I be wrong if I said it’s possibly in the DNA of all AFL supporters – no matter their colours – to secretly harbour a warm spot, deep beneath the duffle coat as they huddle at the MCG, for the Western Bulldogs? Perhaps it is because of the club’s proud Footscray origins and heartbreaking backstory that fans of all creeds can’t help but want the sons of the west to do well. Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli, the sensational All Australian midfielder who is a chance to hang Charlie around his neck on Brownlow night, shares with us his own proud footy origins in this week’s cover feature. ●

FIRST PERSON
““I am Scott Bosman ” … and I’m a corporate pilot I was 14 when I saw an F-111 fighter bomber fly very low and very fast through Port Phillip Bay Heads. I looked up and thought, “I absolutely want to do that”. I liked the technicality of it and appreciated the training of the pilot. My first solo flight was at 16 with the Scouts at Moorabbin Airport in their two-seat Cessna. On the airstrip, the instructor stepped out and said I’d have to do one lap by myself, and then land. I did that and loved it. I was accepted into the air force after my second year of an aviation degree at Swinburne, and on my 21st birthday I graduated as a junior officer. I spent 15 years in the air force. I completed pilot training, did four months in the Middle East in the air operations centre, and fighter jet training in
formation with three other Hawks at a cruise speed of 600km/h. The most challenging run was during a night flight. We were so close to thunderstorms, veins of static electricity crisscrossed the canopy. I was also a pilot for the VIP squadron in Canberra, and flew politicians within Australia and to the South Pacific. I flew Denmark’s Princess Mary to Broken Hill; my last passenger was former Governor-General Quentin Bryce. I became a corporate pilot in 2014. First, for a wealthy individual in Western Australia, and for the past three years, for a company that flies out of Essendon Airport. I fly several times a month, and three to four times a year I pilot longer trips. In July, another captain and I flew the owner’s family to Europe for a month.

I love the responsibility of piloting a plane worth upwards of $US55 million ($81.3 million). I know I am handling a very expensive piece of equipment and ultimately, it’s down to me to get it right. We visit the simulator in Montreal annually, where the aircraft I fly is made. We endure situations like engine failure, electrical problems and smoke in the cockpit. We also have to undertake detailed medicals. Flying is not difficult. If it were, it would be problematic. Landing is still the most challenging. Low visibility, strong wind or a wet runway, mean you sometimes need to call on nearly all your skills. I am probably not a great passenger to travel with. I’ll be like, “What’s that noise? Why are they doing that?” ●

COVER STORY It takes
a team to raise an AFL footballer. Star Marcus Bontempelli gives thanks.
A
s a youngster, Brownlow Medal contender Marcus Bontempelli spent countless hours kicking the footy at his Eltham home, imagining an elite career; the dream felt so real, he'd even commentate as he played in the backyard. Bontempelli’s three sisters were more mad about horse show The Saddle Club than Sherrins, but there was a passion for footy elsewhere in the bloodline, via their cousin, St Kilda champion Nick Dal Santo. “I spent a lot of time outside as the girls were interested in whatever they were interested in, so I was always outside kicking the footy on my own,” Bontempelli, 23, says. “I would be in the backyard virtually as soon as I would get home from school. I'd throw my bag down and then be outside until dinner. “I would be kicking the footy or playing basketball just to keep myself amused – I never had control of the TV remote. “He [Nick] got drafted in 2001 and I was born in ’95, which meant I was about six or seven at that point. “Once Nick got drafted I took an even greater love and interest in the game, and followed him and looked up to him as a role model. “I think from that day forward I wanted to do what Nick was doing." Now one of the league’s supreme midfielders and an All Australian, Bontempelli says while his sisters were busy together, he would spend hours alone outside with the footy, commentating to himself and visualising what it would be like to win a premiership at the MCG.

FIELD OF DREAMS
Wo r d s
Remarkably, just a few years later, that's exactly what Bontempelli did. He was instrumental in the Western Bulldogs winning the AFL grand final in 2016, when he was 20. That same year he polled 20 votes in the Brownlow (accompanied to the ceremony by his mother Geraldine). Bontempelli was last week voted the player of the year by AFL’s coaches (the first Bulldog to win the accolade since it started 16 years ago), which has confirmed him as a hot favourite for the game’s highest individual honour at this year’s Brownlow count on September 23. The Dogs’ premiership was extra special considering what the club had endured two years before, with Brendan McCartney resigning as senior coach and captain Ryan Griffen moving to Greater Western Sydney. It was a time of upheaval at the proud club. However, Bontempelli says he and his teammates embraced the change and what it felt like to be the underdog.

Looking across the ground Bontempelli recounted, with a smile, just how important the club was to him growing up, and the long nights of training. “I remember being out here after training until the lights virtually went off, that was my thing,” he says. “On a Thursday night they would put on a barbecue and we’d be out here after training trying to kick some bombs from the 50-metre mark.” Bontempelli says he was lucky to be in such a strong junior team, and puts a lot of his professional success down to his foundation with the Panthers. “I think one of the big reasons why I fell in love with the game as a kid was because of the footy club, and because of the people who ran it, and the friends I made during that time,” he says. “I never felt I was on my own trying to achieve the dream. I’m incredibly grateful to the club for creating such a positive environment.”
aren’t far behind them in terms of going to games.” Growing up with three sisters, Bontempelli is a strong advocate of the AFLW and the leading role the Western Bulldogs have taken in the league’s development. “Hopefully every club has its own team and it virtually becomes the same competition as us, side by side,” he says.
“I would be kicking the footy or playing basketball just to keep myself amused – I never had control of the TV remote.” “I think some of the best stories in sport [are] coming through various levels of adversity that you go through,” he says. “In the short space of two years we really flipped the script on what had been written for us. It was a pretty special time." The other place Bontempelli spent hours of his youth was at the Eltham Panthers Junior Footy Club, just down the road from his family home. On the eve of the AFL finals series, he visited the oval at Eltham Central Park for Domain Review.
His siblings Olivia, Alanna and Sienna may have left their brother to his own devices while nurturing that big dream, but they are all incredibly supportive of his career. Their parents Carlo and Geraldine are also always by his side. “I've got a really close family and they support me through everything,” he says. “I'm lucky my mum and dad come to a lot of the games, and they try to travel and are probably there for almost 90 per cent of my games. “I'm really lucky, and the girls
“It’s so great for girls out there who now have a pathway.” With his profile and superstar status, Bontempelli has attracted commercial interests outside of football; one of those roles is as a friend of Mercedes-Benz Melbourne Vans. “It’s a great car to drive around in,” he says of his Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute. “It’s incredibly versatile but it’s a big car too. I'm a big lad so that helps as well.” ● ● mbmelbourne.com.au

After 13 years, Italian institution Sarti is closing its doors, with plans to open a new venue towards the end of 2019. The site will remain Italian but present a “younger, more playful concept,” according to co-owner Joe Mammone. Also in the city, Fancy Free has shut, as planned – the Black Pearl alumni always intended the bar to be a six-month pop-up. ●

TRAVEL \ AMALFI COAST We don't really want to tell you about Praiano in Italy, but we will. Snug between big-ticket Positano and atmospheric Amalfi on that sweeping, majestic coastline, Praiano nuzzles into the hillside like a magnificent secret. There, now you know.
A day Don't do anything else if you're day-tripping to Praiano – sit on the gorgeous pebble beach at Marina di Praia and watch the sun dapple the azure water. Maybe a simple, rustic seafood pasta at one of the three beachfront restaurants, maybe a short stroll along the seafront's gorgeous stone carved path to finish at Il Pirata for a crisp Aperol spritz as the sun sets and the boats skip their way back home.

Don't miss the NaturArte Project – a series of mosaics and sculptures by local artists that adorn the houses that cling to the hillside turning the town into the open-air art gallery. Praiano's churches are worth more than a passing glance. The 11th century San Giovanni Battista offers beautiful mosaics inside and an eye-popping view. The vista from the broad terrace of lofty San Luca Evangelista to the endless blue will make you weep. If you want a memorable Saturday night, the Africana nightclub, carved into a cave a stroll from the marina, has plenty of fans. Rumour has it Jackie Kennedy and the jet set used to arrive here by speed boat from Capri.
Divide your seven days by land and sea. The best, most fun and probably most hair-raising way is to hop a Sita bus and marvel as the driver hurls the full-size coach around the tight bends and narrow stone tunnels between towns. Wander Amalfi and its sublime Duomo di Sant Andrea to soothe your jangled nerves or the serene heights of Ravello before your return trip. Both Vesuvius and Pompeii are within easy reach of Praiano, too. Day tours take about eight hours. Numerous boat companies also offer skippered or self-driving/sailing packages to get you to Capri. ●

GETTING THERE \ Naples is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. Most of the large airlines fly to Rome daily and have connecting flights. From Naples, bus or train to Sorrento then take a Sita bus to Praiano. Private car transfers will take you door-to-door.

Niddrie might be one of the best-kept secrets in Melbourne’s west and the appealingly hilly suburb is a place where you can still get bang for your buck. Case in point: this spacious three-bedroom townhouse. The rearmost property in a small development called Hamilton Mews, it’s a five-year-old brick veneer home that keeps things simple and low-maintenance, with quality fittings throughout. The open-for-inspections have been a magnet for young, child-free couples and families with small children. The latter are drawn not just by the residence’s dimensions but by its proximity to a range of great schools, with the prestigious St John Bosco’s and St Bernard’s College within walking distance. The home sits on a 132-square-metre block, with the living areas spread over three levels. The double garage and entry are at ground level, with the main bedroom’s location at the back of the house giving it an atmosphere of seclusion. An en suite bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and private balcony add to the luxurious feel. Below, on the lower ground floor, you’ll find two bedrooms and a large bathroom. Any prospective buyer would approve of the generous laundry, which opens to a courtyard that runs the width of the property. At the top of the house, the timber-floored living and dining zone feels airy. This open-plan level has airconditioning and includes the stone-topped kitchen with breakfast bar, and a powder room. A sliding door leads to a wraparound balcony at the back. Entertain guests here and
