Those who own an Ellery garment know that, by Kym Ellery’s hand, they are engineered for the female form – a tendril of fabric that falls just so, the sensuous whorl of fabric at the throat. She’s the master of modern Australian fashion, embraced by the world – especially Paris Fashion Week. Ellery is cut from a similar cloth to Jenny Kee – a maverick, too. Princess Diana helped Kee’s international profile when she wore one of Kee’s knitted koala jumpers. Ellery has Beyonce. What else is left for Ellery to achieve? Plenty, and journalist Jane Rocca meets her to reveal what’s next. ●

FIRST PERSON
““I am Tom Lillecrapp ” … and I run dog walking adventures I started my dog walking adventure business,
Tom & Captain, in 2013. I had been in commercial real estate, working as a tenant representative. I worked out it just wasn’t for me. And I really wanted a dog in my life. The dog I wanted was a Weimaraner, Captain, and he needed quite a few hours a day of walking. My thoughts were, ‘I’m getting an athlete of a dog. I’m going to be walking it so much anyway, I may as well, for a little extra money, see if anyone in my area wants me to walk their dog as well.’ It took a while to take off, but when it did, I did some sums in my head and I thought well, even if it doesn’t go crazy, this is a great lifestyle. There’d be many hundreds of dogs on our books now. Some dogs only walk with us when their owners go through busy times, and our customers aren’t just wealthy people. It’s not about customers being lazy either – we’re often called in because of a change of circumstances. Perhaps by new mothers, or when a partner needs to go interstate on business. We’re not going to the local park; we go to places like rivers and beaches and bushland, places that dogs can let loose a bit more. I think when dogs play together, they wear each other out a lot more, and they get a lot more out of it. We try and match the groups based on personalities, rather than size. Even though Captain is a 40-kilogram dog, some of his best mates are sausage dogs. I’m really into photography and I get some nice action shots for the owners. ‘This what Peter got up to today, he went to the beach and he hung out with his friend Coconut ...’ You have to be very patient. Sometimes you get dogs that don’t want to leave. You step towards them, they step back – they think it’s a game and you just want to go home. And you do pick up a huge amount of poo. But it’s just one of those things, you don’t even think about in the end. It is a fun job, it really is. I love – even if you’re all muddy and a soaking-wet golden retriever is jumping up on you. It’s certainly not a stress-free job, but I would much rather be doing this and hanging out with Captain than being at a desk. ● ● tomandcaptain.com

COVER STORY

s one of Australia’s most celebrated fashion exports, Kym Ellery has done what few have managed in just 11 years in retail. She’s taken her luxury clothing brand from its humble beginnings in Sydney to Paris and wooed a celebrity client list that includes Beyonce, Bella Hadid and Chloe Sevigny. The Perth-born 35-year-old relocated to Paris in 2016 to grow her business abroad. With more than 90 per cent of her client base living in another time zone, it made perfect sense to pack her bags and quit taking midnight calls in Australia.

Best known for her sculptural ready-to-wear pieces, Ellery has since branched into shoes, jewellery and eyewear in a bid to expose her classic modernist point of view to more followers. She takes lessons from art and philosophy, and imbeds her collections with a vision that comes from the heart – she loves a flared sleeve and ruffle, too. Ellery is also one of only three Aussie designers invited by the Chambre Syndicale du Pret a Porter – French fashion’s governing body – to show on schedule during Paris Fashion Week three years ago. She follows in the footsteps of Collette Dinnigan, who was honoured in 1995, and Martin Grant. Now the French have fallen head over block heels in love with Ellery’s tailoring and oversized silhouettes. What’s more, she channels an intellectual French bon viveur spirit in her latest eyewear range with Specsavers – a partnership now in its third year. Ellery reimagines cat-eye frames with a graphic wonder, while large square and round styles flirt with a ’90s retro feel. “Eyewear can be a very intellectual piece of fashion,” Ellery says while on a trip to northern Italy with her mother, Debra. “My inspiration comes from my intimate moments in Paris, from living there to seeing beautiful women in glasses.” Ellery is also intrigued by the way French women interact with one another, from fashion to politics. “The way Parisians think and speak fascinates me,” she says. “They’re philosophical and different to what we’re used to in Australia. We aren’t encouraged to speak our minds as much as they are.” Her latest spring fashion collection is inspired by The Sound of Ice

Melting – a 1970 installation by conceptualist artist Paul Kos, who set up a block of ice among a sea of microphones to capture the sound of ice doing just that. “I liked the existential nature of his work,” Ellery says. “For me, it was about looking at the idea of ice and how it links to icicle embroidery or the interior of a freezer ... to the melting of water and how that could look as a scarf draped onto tailoring.” As a result, Ellery’s ready-to-wear items are captured in sequins that form snowflake patterns and in dreamy, icicle-inspired fabrics in dusty peach, white and silver. She thanks her art-teacher mother, who encouraged her to use her imagination while growing up in remote Western Australia. And, in a perfect throwback to how it all began, she is taking art classes with her mother again.
“It’s how I started my creative journey so it’s nice to step back in time and relive that moment,” Ellery says. “Mum is my greatest muse and I don’t see her as often as I like, but right now we’re in Italy together and it’s amazing.” When Ellery takes a moment to come up for air, she reflects on her achievements with gratitude. “It’s kind of strange to realise I have achieved what I set out to when I started this brand. I’ve ticked all the boxes,” she says. “I wanted to create a luxury brand in Australia that would become internationally known, would show on schedule in Paris and be on the world stage. I did, for a moment, think maybe now I can slow down a bit, but not really,” she adds, smiling. It’s business as usual – that’s two collections a year, collaborations with Specsavers and dressing celebrities.
“It’s incredibly tough to survive in this business,” Ellery says. “You have to be aware of what’s happening in the market and remain relevant.” She says the digital world is still new and people are learning how to navigate it: “It’s an ongoing challenge ... I am proud of what I have achieved but there’s more I want to do.” While celebrity endorsement isn’t the reason anyone gets in the business, Ellery is certainly thrilled by those who “fan-girl” her collections. “I have ‘wow’ moments all the time,” she says. “Seeing Beyonce’s team come in and order my collection is up there in terms of wow. I mean, she can have anything she wants and they chose Ellery. I also met Bella Hadid and she was so gushy and a huge fan. “Hearing it first hand from them is what makes it feel surreal, but it’s very flattering.” ●

ENTERTAINMENT Tim Minchin is hitting the road and embracing the acting world for his new TV drama, Uptight. Wo r d s

“The story is quintessentially Australian ... (it) should make you laugh and laugh and laugh, and then cry.” TIM MINCHIN
JUSTIN McMANUS
ack in 1998, Kylie Minogue sold out five live shows at St Kilda’s Palais Theatre, which was a very rare feat. But that is exactly what has also happened for comedian, writer, composer, musician and director Tim Minchin. His five concert dates in April for his Back tour have already sold out, which is quite remarkable a few months ahead of the tour. Like Minogue, Minchin is really something special when it comes to Australians doing really, really well in entertainment on the global scale. Minchin is currently filming his new Foxtel TV series called Uptight, which was created by The Chaser’s Chris Taylor with Tim writing the script alongside Kate Mulvany and Leon Ford. It will see him drive across the Nullarbor from Perth to Sydney, with a piano in his car. “The story is quintessentially Australian without being parochial,” he says of Uptight. “The story should make you laugh and laugh and laugh, and then cry.” For Minchin, Uptight is a dream role. “I don’t think I ever dreamed that I would be a kind of co-star in an eight-part drama, but at the same time, the skills I’ve applied over the past 15 years have led me here and I feel very excited.” At 43, Minchin tells Domain Review that, in a lot of ways, he is only getting started. One burning ambition of his is to create a worldwide global Australian musical hit. Minchin tasted worldwide success writing the lyrics and music for Matilda The Musical, which opened in London’s West End in 2011 before going on to Broadway and then being performed around the world. “I am hoping to develop my next musical here in Australia,” he says. “I can’t say too much about it, but it is with a local theatre company. “There is no doubt that Australians can cut it on the world stage when it comes to musicals, but with the exception of Muriel’s Wedding, which has done really well, and maybe Priscilla (Queen of the Desert) and Strictly Ballroom, we haven’t really had a huge hit that has come out of Australia yet. “I really want to be part of it, and making the world sit up and notice, so I’d like to produce one here.
Something special “I want it to be complex, multi-layered, challenging, funny and dark musical theatre, which really appeals to me.” Minchin, who grew up in Perth on the comedy circuit, now is based in Sydney with his wife Sara and their children Casper and Violet. Seven years ago he stopped touring the stand-up comedy world to concentrate on other things, and that has really paid off.
While often behind the scenes on projects like Matilda, Minchin is keen to continue to build his acting career, hence signing up for Uptight. “I think since I stopped touring seven years ago, my mission has to be, on one hand, to build my acting career,” he says. “Not exclusively, not at the cost of anything else, but just to takes role that will stretch myself, and play characters who are goodies and baddies.” ●

SPORT
In a league of their own Meet basketball’s Kestelman family: together, they live and breathe the competition.
J
ustin Kestelman calls it “my first highlight basketball memory” – being 10 years old, on the Gold Coast, hanging out with the Melbourne Tigers. Being in the company of professional athletes stirred something within him. “Talking to superstars, being part of that atmosphere; that really put the fire in my pit,” the 24-year-old says. “I love this sport and everything about it. And I love the way it makes me feel.” His millionaire businessman father, Larry Kestelman, admits that his own passion for the sport also has familial roots. As a Ukrainian migrant, he was cajoled by his cousin into giving basketball’s spectator experience a try in the 1990s, and it shocked him.
“I expected just a basketball game.” Instead, he was wowed by the accompanying entertainment, the corporate aspect, and especially the predominance of families having fun. When he first took Justin to a game he came away feeling like they’d been to a Harlem church where everybody went home with a spring in their step. “It became time with the family, an uplifting experience,” Larry says. “We used to have those awkward moments of silence where you don’t always connect. Basketball has been that connector.” Justin concurs: “Basketball isn’t a thing without him. That’s what really propelled our relationship, talking about something we both have such a passion for and a vested interest in.”

Lately, that vested interest has added another dimension – apparel group First Ever, which Justin is heading – to the suite of companies Larry Kestelman oversees from his 16th-floor penthouse office in Albert Park. Co-founding internet provider Dodo (sold in 2013 for $203 million) shot Larry into Australia’s richest 100. Buying the Melbourne Tigers in 2012, then the National Basketball League itself in 2015, has taken that “connection” to another level. “As we always do as a family, we’ve gone in boots and all,” Larry says, a backdrop of basketballs and champagne jeroboams framing his office chair. “No half measures here.” Down on level one, the office of First Ever is buzzing. NBL jerseys on hangers fill the walls, while racks of streetwear surround pods occupied by the development team, retail team and design house. “The name stems from being my first-ever business, as cliched as it is, but also that we’re the first ever professional basketball league to own its own sporting label,” Justin says. It’s happened in a hurry. Last December, his vision was being jotted on sticky notes – of producing playing gear for every basketballer from entry level to NBL, with a percentage of sales injected into junior development, and a streetwear label with the game’s youthful, be-yourself vibe. “I did the research, spent three months speaking to every association, mums and dads, and put together a business case that my father ended up

buying into,” Justin says. “How do you offer a sporting product and a streetwear product? I had a designer and a buyer, and the rest is history.” As a teenager, Justin was teased as “Dodo Boy”; what he wore became his vehicle for expression. First Ever’s slogan – “You Do You” – is a veritable declaration of identity. “The whole brand is about street individuality,” Justin says. “If you like the jumper, wear the jumper; if you like the whole outfit, you do you. It’s about showing who you are as a person.” He laughs at his father’s claim to being the brand’s ambassador – “I tell him to stay far, far away”. Larry concedes the fact he doesn’t own any apparel interests might be telling. “He’s sent me the message
that I’m not his target demographic; he reminds me often that he’s trying to make it cool again.” Justin manages the operation, briefing his father weekly. A recutting of traditional team jerseys in step with the NBL’s new era is planned, with a blue strip with a dominant ‘M’ hanging on a First Ever wall a sign of what’s to come. Larry was criticised when he rebranded the Melbourne Tigers, a force in the NBL’s boom years, as Melbourne United. Now, with grandstands filling once more, exposure on Foxtel and Channel Nine and the huge figure of Andrew Bogut returning home to play out his twilight years, not to mention stars like Ben Simmons, Patty Mills and Joe Ingles giving Australian basketball global credibility in

America’s NBA, his vision is coming together. “There’ve been a few sleepless nights worrying about how to make it sustainable, but I feel we’re coming out the other end now,” Larry says. With the new NBL season underway, he looks forward to going to games as a family, including his 83-year-old mother, and seeing other clans enjoying precious hours together. His son will be there, of course, and he can think of no greater joy than their passion being shared in work and play. If Justin feels any obligation to succeed, it’s as much to himself as to his father. “He believes in me and trusts me, which is scary, but reassuring at the same time. I won’t fail him, and I won’t fail myself.” ●

Fish in crazy water Acqua pazza – the ultimate island fish dish
Serves 2 30 minutes 2 spring onions ½ a bulb of fennel 1 carrot 200g ripe mixed-colour cherry tomatoes, on the vine 3 cloves of garlic ½ a fresh red chilli 8–10 mixed olives (stone in) Olive oil 2 x 350g whole round fish, such as royal bream, trout, sea bass, red mullet, scaled, gutted, gills removed, from sustainable sources 1 bunch of mixed fresh soft herbs (30g), such as flat-leaf parsley, mint, fennel tops 150ml Greco di Tufo white wine 1 lemon Extra virgin olive oil
Method ■ Trim the spring onions and fennel (reserving any leafy tops), peel the carrot, then slice them all ½cm thick. Halve the tomatoes. Peel and finely slice the garlic and chilli. Squash and destone the olives. Put a large frying pan on a high heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Stir in the onions, fennel and carrot, followed 4 minutes later by the tomatoes, garlic, chilli and olives. Toss regularly for 2 minutes while you lightly score the fish on both sides (this will help flavour and heat to penetrate as it cooks). ■ Lay the fish on top of the veg, stuff half the herbs into the cavities, then pour over the wine and let it reduce by half. Add about 300ml of water, to come 1cm up the side of
■
the pan. Cover and leave to thunder away on a high heat for 8 minutes (boiling underneath, steaming on top means fragrant veggies). Pick the remaining herb leaves, finely grate the lemon zest over them, then chop and mix together. Uncover the fish and baste with its juices for 1 minute. To check the fish is cooked, go to the thickest part up near the head – if the flesh flakes easily away from the bone, it’s done. Remove to a plate, spoon over the veg and juices, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, scatter over the lemony herbs, then squeeze over the lemon juice. Great served with bread to mop up that irresistible sauce, or with new potatoes, couscous or rice. ●

Healthy ways to savour every meal
D
o you find yourself frequently eating beyond the point of being full? Overeating or falling into the trap of binge-eating is something that too many of us do, all too often. Check out the steps below to figure out if this is something you do, find out why you’re doing it, and most importantly, how to stop. OVEREATING: WHAT IS IT? Let’s talk about
overeating. Not to be confused with binge-eating, overeating typically occurs in public and social situations. An example could be stuffing your face when you’re absolutely starving – it’s that feeling of mindless, excessive overeating. It also happens when we have a lack of understanding, or discipline, when it comes to serving sizes, meaning that we continually consume much more food than our body actually needs.
It is when our portion sizes are out of whack and we pile up our plates, scraping the plate absolutely clean – then we are guilty of overeating. WHY IS IT DANGEROUS? While overeating is
certainly the less severe behaviour of these two, it’s dangerous because it’s so common and can quickly become an everyday habit. Our body adapts and becomes used to the large portions, so it can take a bit of adjusting for your body to get back to the right-size portions you should be having. HOW YOU CAN AVOID IT \
Eat from a smaller plate. When we eat from smaller plates our mind tricks us into thinking we are eating a larger portion. ■ Eat slowly and mindfully. Enjoy every bite of your meal, really taking in the taste, smell and texture. ■

Don’t let yourself get too hungry. Avoid getting to the point of being ravenous and over-compensating.
■
BINGE-EATING: WHAT IS IT? Binge-eating is usually a non-hungry behaviour dominated by food rules, and tends to be more private and secretive. It can be fuelled by shame and self-loathing. When we indulge in binge-eating, it says a lot about our relationship with food and the nutrients that we’re getting. A restrictive, hard-core diet that cuts out everything you love is likely to lead you down this dangerous path.
ISTOCK
WHY IS IT DANGEROUS? Binge-eating is the
more dangerous as it can result in guilt, shame and feelings of being out of control. It often stems from a more emotional place than mindlessly piling up your plate. When you’re in a cycle of eating poorly, your body becomes used to eating highly processed foods packed full of refined sugars. Once you take on a healthier focus and eat real food made with fresh ingredients, you’ll lose that desire to binge-eat.
HOW YOU CAN AVOID IT \ Along with making sure
your diet is healthy and packed with real, wholesome foods, binge-eating can be avoided with a little tactic called ‘‘mindful indulgences’’. ■ Choose something you absolutely love to eat. Make sure it’s your true-love food. ■ Be sensible with your portion sizes. Keep your indulgences to a small handful. ■ Enjoy it! Take in every second of your treat and make the most of every single bite. ■ Don’t feel guilty. If you’ve stuck to the tips above then you can feel confident that this indulgence won’t affect your results. ■ Get back to your normal, healthy meal plan straight after. Don’t let things snowball. The most important thing to remember? Overeating and binge-eating can happen, and that’s OK. Slip-ups like these don’t make you a terrible person, they make you human. The best thing you can do is get back on track. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

lthough Jemima Montag won gold for racewalking at this year’s Commonwealth Games, and is on track to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, there was a time last year when she seriously doubted herself. “After year 12, I found myself a little bit disorientated with my motivation for racewalking,” the 20-year-old admits. “I didn’t really believe in myself any more as having the potential to make the Australian team.” Montag put her sporting career on hold to focus on her year 11 and 12 studies. But while travelling in Japan with her family, a conversation with her mother and sister about the upcoming Tokyo Olympics rekindled her desire to make it to the top. “My mum said, ‘I think you have what it takes to represent your country, if you want it. I’m not going to put any pressure on you, I’m just saying you could believe in yourself a little more’,” says Montag, a product of Wesley College’s sports program. “From then on, there was this passion that was really starting to burn inside of me.” Montag, who was competing in just her third 20-kilometre walk at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April, took out the event when the race leader and favourite, fellow Australian Claire Tallent, was disqualified. Montag graduated from Wesley in 2016 after
completing the IB program and receiving a perfect score of 45 (equivalent ATAR of 99.95), having been awarded two years earlier the R G Menzies Scholarship, the most prestigious scholarship offered by the school. Named after Australia’s longserving Liberal prime minister, Sir Robert Menzies, the scholarship is typically awarded to students who hold leadership roles and are excelling in their academic and co-curricular studies. While she had a clear passion for racewalking, Montag was also involved in a number of other sports growing up, including ballet for 10 years. She was captain of the school’s athletics and cross country team in year 12, and was part of music ensembles and Wesley’s debating team. She says the scholarship helped her balance her commitments at school with being an elite athlete. “From a financial point of view, having the support of the R G Menzies Scholarship enabled that delicate web of excelling in sport and excelling academically at the same time.”
Montag’s most memorable experiences at Wesley include the year 9 Clunes program and the year 10 Yiramalay trip to an Indigenous community in the Kimberley, Western Australia. “Clunes is the term away where you’re living with seven other girls in a little house, and you have to cook and clean for yourself, become independent, and co-operate with others, which is tricky at that age,” she says. “Wesley has a studio school in the Kimberley in an area called Yiramalay. You can go there for three weeks and it’s a kind of cultural exchange. You just live and breathe with the local students. It was so eye-opening.” Montag is currently studying a bachelor of science at the University of Melbourne. She also works for The One Box, a charity that delivers fresh food boxes to families in need. “I think the people I met, the diversity of opportunities and the environment at Wesley was just very conducive to personal discovery and dreaming about what could be possible in the future.” ● ARIANNA LUCENTE

A matter of choice
S
chool scholarships are serious business. For the students who receive one, a scholarship can open doors that were previously closed, making private schooling affordable or entry to a selective government school for academic high-fliers a reality. Here’s a rundown on the application process for parents who think a scholarship could be an option for their child. TESTING COMMENCES \
Scholarship season has officially begun. Exams for 2020 school entry began in October and will continue over the next six months or so, peaking around February and March. Most schools host exams on their campuses, on a date of their own choosing (though some participate in what’s called a “co-operative program”, where students sit one exam for multiple schools
simultaneously). Schools will publish their scholarship details and application information online, so it’s important that parents monitor the websites of schools that they’re interested in. CHOOSING THE RIGHT FIT \
There are a range of scholarships available: general excellence for all-rounders, academic, music and sport, as well as scholarships for Indigenous students, refugees, and rural students. Fiona Sherry, operations manager at Edutest, says it’s crucial to research schools first, then see if they offer scholarships that may suit your child’s strengths. “Every school is different,” she says. “Every school has a different culture, subject offerings, different co-curricular activities. You really need to do your homework and find out if you think this school is going to be the right fit for your child.” If applying for a general excellence or academic

scholarship, the applicant will sit an exam prepared by an organisation such as Edutest or ACER. Most schools put together a shortlist of students following the exam, and then have an interview process. “Very few schools are just looking for an exam result as an entry point to a scholarship,” Sherry explains. “They are looking for intelligent students, students at the top end … but they’re also looking for students who’ll make a contribution to the school.”

SCHOLARSHIP YEAR LEVELS \
The majority of scholarship hopefuls apply for year 7 entry while undertaking grade 6, but scholarships are also available for primary school or later secondary years, such as years 9, 10 and 11. Again, what’s on offer depends on each school. Though children applying for a year 7 scholarship will be competing against a higher number of students, there may be fewer scholarships available in other year levels.
PLANNING AHEAD \
Dr Jarrod Hingston, manager of ACER’s Schools Assessment Services unit, advises against preparing for a scholarship years in advance because the exams are designed to test skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, rather than knowledge recall. They typically consist of several components testing a student’s ability in mathematics and humanities, reading comprehension and written expression. “We’re really targeting the child’s true abilities to problem solve and deal with information,” he explains. Though excessive study isn’t needed, having some practice runs can help children become familiar with the format and completing the test within a timeframe. Example tests are available online from both ACER and Edutest. ● ERIN MUNRO

pplying for a scholarship can be a daunting experience. For children, the stakes feel high and the pressure is on. It behoves parents to be mindful of what their child might be feeling throughout the process, and help find ways to reduce anxiety and stress. First, make sure you’re pursuing the best fit for your child, says Dr Kimberley O’Brien, principal psychologist at the child and adolescent psychology practice Quirky Kid Clinic. “Looking at which school is the right match for your child is really important,” Dr O’Brien says. Consider your child’s interests; if they’re not naturally academic, sitting for a scholarship at an academic-focused school isn’t a great idea, Dr O’Brien adds.

Maybe look into scholarships for other talents, such as music, performing arts or sport. If your child is applying for an academic or general excellence scholarship, they’ll have to sit a test. These are designed to determine ability rather than a student’s knowledge of curriculum, so studying isn’t necessary, but taking practice tests to become familiar with the scholarship exam format can be helpful. Vi Nguyen, the founder of tutoring service Exam Success, suggests the best approach to scholarship preparation is to start early and plan carefully. “It’s just like participating in a marathon,” she says. “You need to start your training early and make regular practice a habit.” Nguyen’s tips for successful study are to focus on improving weaknesses – areas where a child has learning gaps – focus on quality rather than quantity, and limit preparation to a regular window of time. Following these rules can provide balance and prevent a child from becoming overwhelmed. Dr O’Brien recommends making practice sessions a family activity.
“It’s just like participating in a marathon. You need to start your training early and make regular practice a habit.” VI NGUYEN
“Make it low pressure and all about the relationship, and like a shared project, so you can work through the papers together, rather than putting the child under pressure,” she says. Don’t place undue importance on the scholarship or discuss financial matters with the child; instead, frame the experience as a chance for learning. “It is not an exam that determines whether or not you’re going to be successful in life,” Nguyen says. “It’s just a way for the school to select students. “If students frame the exam in that way, it becomes less daunting.” If a student doesn’t receive a scholarship, Dr O’Brien says parents should “demonstrate resilience”: disappointment is part of the human experience, and seeing parents normalise it can be
healthy for a child. “Bounce back, don’t worry about suggesting they find out who else got the scholarship or try to question the results,” she says. “Accept it and show you can cope and move on is the best way forward, and look at the positives of the other school options available.” And for kids who do gain a scholarship? “Congratulations, it’s a time to celebrate,” says Dr O’Brien. “Visit the school, explore its offerings, and make sure your child feels comfortable talking with teachers if they need extra support.” She adds: “Make the best of that opportunity and that just means by being well rounded – socially, academically and emotionally.” ● ERIN MUNRO

ozing opulence and grace, La Pyrenee brings to life the elegance of classical French Baroque in a palatial five-bedroom home design from Signature by Metricon. Classical French-inspired design is always prized by home buyers and La Pyrenee delivers a fresh take on the characteristic symmetrical facade with matched pairs of tall, multi-paned windows, Corinthian columns, wrought-iron Juliet balconies and a central portico. La Pyrenee has been created by Australia’s largest home builder for discerning knock-down-new-build customers seeking space and style; it features three-metre ceiling heights on both levels of its 638.68-square-metre floor plan. Metricon design manager Ricky D’Alesio says La Pyrenee is a home that not only impresses, but performs, with an intelligent floorplan designed for versatile living. “La Pyrenee is designed for families without any compromise on space, everything about it is generous. We know that today’s homes need to support a shift in the way many families are choosing to live. Grandparents may move in to help, and we’re seeing adult children stay home longer to complete education or save for a house,” D’Alesio says. The layout includes grandparent-friendly ground-level accommodation with an en suite, walk-in wardrobe and an adjacent lounge; upstairs four en suite bedrooms include an expansive 33-square-metre main suite with a walk-in wardrobe sized to satisfy the most avid fashionista. Further highlights include a spectacular cast iron spiral staircase, an enormous kitchen with natural marble benchtops and a fully-equipped butler’s pantry and several living and relaxation zones. ● LIZ MCLACHLAN

Live the ultimate leisurely lifestyle in this surprisingly minimal ’80s property complete with a pool and tennis court. Unlike most houses of its era, this property does away with excessive colour and ornamentation to instead feature floor-to-ceiling glass at every opportunity. The interiors contain mostly curved walls, creating a unique design statement reminiscent of an art gallery. The two-storey floorplan is zoned to include living spaces on the ground floor with all bedrooms above. An entrance foyer with a high domed ceiling leads to a formal living room (carpeted) followed by the dining, sitting and family rooms (each with timber floors). These living rooms adjoin the open-plan kitchen and meals area with an island bench and breakfast bar before a sunroom curving around the floor’s rear. Double doors off this space open to a paved outdoor dining area. Also on the ground floor opposite the living rooms is a study, laundry (with external access) and powder room. Glass bricks surround the staircase connecting to the upper floor. The main bedroom has its own rear wing, allowing private access to a balcony overlooking the backyard along with an en suite (with a bath, separate vanities and toilet) and walk-in wardrobe. Three further bedrooms on this storey are positioned around a bathroom with shower and double vanity. The property’s backyard is undoubtedly one of its shining features, with a solar-heated pool, tennis court and generous lawn. ’Milawa’ the Victorian mansion built in 1888 for the family of Sir Isaac Isaacs at the high point of the famed Urquhart Estate in Hawthorn is suffused with history. Isaacs became an agitator for Federation, the Solicitor General, the Attorney General, High Court Judge, and finally, the first Australian Governor General of Australia. When built it was surrounded by market gardens and had views over the city, Mount Macedon and back to The Dandenongs, and still enjoys long views across the city. A six bedroom, two storey home of private and shared spaces that verge on grand but never become intimidating, ´Milawa´ boasts superb ornamentation: marble fireplaces, ornate cornices and roses, Anaglypta wallpapers and stained glass windows that run from the original Victorian to Art Deco. Twenty years ago the current owners accomplished a major renovation, realizing a stunning synthesis of antiquity and modernity. Now, with hydronic heating flowing through her veins and new light flooding her spaces ´Milawa´ is a rare Victorian beauty. Land size 845sqm (approx).

Not your ordinary home designer and builder. Designed to be distinctive since 1958. With all our experts – architects, interior designers, quantity surveyors and builders – housed under one roof, we work more like a five-star hotel. The entire process from brief to build is managed in-house – so there’s no to-ing and fro-ing between contractors. Because the tighter, smarter and more streamlined the process, the more we can focus on the most important challenge: how your space looks, feels and functions.
