Our cover this week celebrates aspects of Victorian life that connect us across the generations. A shared love of AFL binds Sarah Jones and her grandfather Jack Jones, one of the most beloved former players at the Essendon Football Club. Sarah, a football journalist, and her Pop, also a veteran of World War II, will be at the Anzac Day match between the Bombers and Collingwood at the MCG; it’s an occasion that for them carries a gravity as big as a grand final, as it does for many Victorian families. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am JJames Ketika” … and I’m a ‘garbo’ I saw this job advertised and I just wanted to get fit again, so I took it. The ad was for a bin runner, so I was the guy running behind the truck emptying the bins. I used to box when I was younger, and I missed being athletic. If you’re doing wheelie bins in the city, you’ve got to be quick because you hold up the traffic, so you just sprint from one bin to another. When you do that all day, you get fit pretty quickly. I lost about 10 kilograms when I started. Not everyone has to run; I just wanted to put in extra. What does it take to be a good garbo? It’s your work ethic. It’s easy to die off during the day, but I never complained. There’s not too many really bad smells – just at the tip, and food that’s not in a bag. But you just cop that, and it’s all right. It’s part of the job; you can’t work as a garbo and complain about the smells. I like hard, physical work. Before this I was a grave digger, and before that I was concreting. My parents were hard workers; my dad came here from Tonga, and he worked hard so I could have a relatively good life. For the past two months I’ve been driving the truck, and doing the bigger runs for all the apartment buildings. You have to have a good sense of humour to be a driver; it’s a long day. The other guys are funny – they’re all amateur comedians. I never thought in a million years I’d be driving a truck in the city, but I’ve adapted. There’s cars on both sides, going down laneways, going in and out, pedestrians and people on scooters. I start at five o’clock and I finish at three, so it’s a 10-hour shift. I love it because it’s still dark, so you still get a while before the traffic builds up. At 7am to 7.30am, that’s when it gets a bit difficult to manoeuvre, but at five in the morning it’s perfect. I like smashing it out early and enjoying the rest of the day when I get home with my two kids. I’ve got a boy who’s four and a daughter who’s two. I feel like I’ve accomplished something and contributed to society by doing this job. I had the same kind of feeling when I was grave digging, especially when the families would thank me. My son wants to be a garbo now. Whatever job I’m doing at the moment he likes. Now he’s asking to come on the job with me. ●

COVER STORY

Anzac Day footy unites veteran Jack Jones and his granddaughter Sarah.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

J

ack Jones, 94, played in seven grand finals for his beloved Essendon Football Club, while granddaughter Sarah Jones, 36, is one of the faces of Fox Footy’s AFL coverage. They share a special bond and love of the Bombers and family, highlighted on Anzac Day. As a teenager, Jack served his country in New Guinea and Bougainville as part of the 24th Infantry Battalion during World War II. It’s a Jones family tradition to walk in the march before heading into the MCG for the traditional Essendon and Collingwood match. This year, Jack will be watching from the stands while Sarah will be at ground level hosting Fox’s broadcast. “Last year, we had 35 of the family there for the march, and all had a great time together,” Jack says. “It’s a sad day when it comes around because we lost 91 in our battalion and 197 wounded. I was one of the lucky ones, with a lot of my mates, and those poor buggers never had the chance to have a family, get married or even see their parents again. “Our battalion was mainly made up of 19-yearolds – I’d never seen a gun, hand grenade or machine gun in those days. It was hard to take in for a while, but I got through it, thank God, and now I’ve got a lovely family, Sarah and all the grandkids and great-grandkids. “But when the bugler blows the Last Post, that’s when I feel it more than anything.” For Sarah, Anzac Day is about reflection and gratitude. “It’s a really special day for our whole family, and because of Pop, we see an example of someone who went to war, fought for his country and was really lucky to come back. None of us would be here if he didn’t return. “There’s gratitude that he was one of the lucky ones and a real sense of pride in what he did because for us. It’s just a world away, what those teenagers did – it’s hard to wrap your head around

just how horrendous it would’ve been. Pop did that as a young man then came home and led a really rich life back in Australia. “Anzac Day is a really special day to celebrate Pop and all the Anzacs. Having a connection with Essendon and the Anzac Day match has really amplified that.” The Joneses were born Bombers. Jack began following Essendon in 1933 and saw Dick Reynolds play his first league game. Thirteen years later he’d play alongside his hero. “I have red in one eye and black in the other,” Jack laughs. “When I came home (from the war), I played in three premierships and seven grand finals with my idol Dick Reynolds. “It was wonderful. I was successful only because I played in a great side. You’ve got to be there at the right time with all the good players.” Sarah loves that her AFL club was chosen for her. “It was in my blood and DNA that I’d barrack for the Bombers. There was no choice – I was always going to be a Bomber. When we were kids, Pop

would take us down to the rooms to meet the players, and that was really cool, and when he worked in the club’s Hall of Fame we’d go along and watch his tours,” she recalls. “Having the footy connection is great because Pop loves footy, I love footy, and a lot of that comes from him. Essendon’s a big interest for him and part of his life that keeps him going strong at 94.” Sarah was eight when her mum died in an accident, but despite living in Echuca, her Melbourne-based Nan and Pop played a very active role in her childhood, never missing a netball final or ballet concert.

T

oday, Jack is Fox Footy’s No.1 viewer, having watched Sarah enter journalism competitions as a child, later do work experience at the Herald Sun and then land her first job in television. “Sarah is very special. The grandkids are equal, and I love them all but Sarah is on television, and no matter what day she is on TV I find her and barrack for her all the time.” Now, Sarah’s heart fills with joy watching her Pop with her daughters Mila, 4, and Halle, 2. “We have a lot of shared interests and spending time with Pop is so much fun and now seeing my daughters get to have a really great relationship with their great-grandfather is something so special,” she says. “They call him ‘Old Poppy’. We visit, and Nan makes pancakes for the girls and Pop tries to steal them, and that’s an ongoing game.” Sarah says anchoring Fox’s Anzac Day football coverage is a career highlight. “Especially as a Bomber fan and someone who really loves the occasion of Anzac Day, it’s only behind finals and the grand finals as the biggest occasion in football. “You get the chill down your spine when they do the ceremony, and it’s even more special because of my connection to Pop.” ●

This new business and economic endeavour wraps up a challenging period for Kennedy, who is looking to the future and he says he will only learn from the past. “That’s life, that’s business more than anything else,” Kennedy, 40, says. “But again, it’s just another experience. that happens in your life that makes you think about what your next move is going to be, or how you function. itting in his Melbourne office, James Kennedy, the executive chairman of the Kennedy Luxury Group, is ready to put an up-and-down year behind him. His high-end goods business – he is the young Australian who shook up the otherwise traditional prestige retail scene in his 30s – came under serious pressure last year. One of the Kennedy business subsidiaries, EGI Audio Visual, which distributed Danish audio visual brand Bang & Olufsen in Australia, went into voluntary administration. Legal action ensued. Bang & Olufsen served a demand claiming the Kennedy subsidiary owed $6 million and Kennedy countersued. The matter was recently dismissed by the Victorian Supreme Court, but Kennedy has initiated legal proceedings in Denmark, seeking compensation for breach of contract. In a recent letter to his staff, Kennedy said EGI has entered an arrangement with its creditors and is embarking on an “orderly windingup and reregistration”, likely to be concluded by June 30. Kennedy’s group is also off-loading its fashion interests, parting ways with established designer brands Loewe, Kenzo and Giuseppe Zanotti. The Kennedy company is known more broadly in Melbourne for its partnership with the Victoria Racing Club (now in the middle of a fiveyear deal) and this month became a newly-minted sponsor of the AFL. As the league pushes ahead with plans to raise the game’s profile in China, Kennedy has inked a deal as an official match-day partner in China, with teams contesting the

your failures.” Kennedy Luxury Group will now focus on its watch and jewellery business, with 10 stores around Australia to soon become 12. In the first half of this financial year the company made $52.5 million in sales, according to Kennedy – an increase of 19.5 per cent on the same time last year. The Kennedy jewellery business is a modern Australian retail success; it began in Sydney in 1976 when his parents opened their first store. Kennedy had a career in finance before returning to the family business and expanding it – rapidly. “I grew up in the business,” Kennedy says. “I was always overhearing the conversations my parents were having. I always thought it was where I’d end up. “The path and timing that I took to get in to the business was probably not what you’d predict, but I don’t think you can predict that part of it. “My dad passed away, not unexpectedly, when I had my own job and my own career. When he passed away, my mum had to deal with the loss as well as trying to run the business, so it was time for me to step into the business.” Kennedy moved to Melbourne a few years ago, when he met his now-wife Jaimee Belle Kennedy. Their wedding last year in Florence was featured in Vogue. “I wouldn’t be standing here today if not for her,” Kennedy says. For the past two years, the couple have been side by side in the Birdcage at Flemington, with the Kennedy company lending its name to Oaks Day. “I’ve always been resilient and I’ll continue to be resilient,” he says. ●

inger/songwriter Amy Shark is enjoying her pop star moment. The 32-year-old, who collected Album of the Year, Best Female Artist and Best Pop Release for Love Monster at last year's ARIA Awards, is still basking in the afterglow of her massive win. Since then, she's graced the cover of Vogue, co-directed her new video clip Mess Her Up with US indie music director Shane O'Donohue (who also directed All Loved Up Up) and admits she's OK with being a role model to young women trying to make it in the music industry. But Shark is the first to tell you her journey hasn't been a smooth one. Her survival in the fickle music business is proof that you need more than good songs and thick skin to handle the criticism. It was after her song Adore was given significant airplay on Triple J in 2016 that a record label bidding war took place. “You know I didn't ask to be a role model, but I guess I sort of have become that now,” says Shark, whose latest song is about cheating with your best friend's boyfriend. “I definitely am still going to be the person who makes mistakes and takes risks. But I have so much advice to give to young musicians. “I did it the hard way and have been knocked down so many times, but it's about not giving up, not giving in and remaining true to yourself as an artist. It's about asking yourself, is this really me?” Shark plans to spend more time working in Los Angeles, a move that is crucial to her work, even though she has bought herself a nice house on the Gold Coast. “The things you can make happen is really electric in LA,” says Shark,

CHILDHOOD \ Shark grew up with her mother Robyn and stepfather David Cushway. “I knew the words to November Rain by Guns N’ Roses at the age of two,” she says. “But I also listened to Silverchair (above), Crash Test Dummies and Alanis Morissette – it’s where I listened to beautiful voices and learnt to tell stories from a young age.” ●

onfronted by the bucolic, rolling hills of South Gippsland, city slickers like me are left wondering: How did everything get so green? The answer, of course, is rain. Lots of rain. Regular drenchings make for great dairy country but also a sublime drive to the region’s main attraction, Wilsons Promontory National Park. There’s no denying The Prom’s rugged beauty, but if things do become inclement, what then? Enter the small village of Fish Creek, turned recently into a hub for art galleries and, of all things, children’s books, with dedicated shops for much-loved authors Alison Lester ((Magic Magic Beach Beach)) and Roland Harvey ((Islands Islands In My Garden Garden). ).

A weekend Wilsons Prom is just over 50 kilometres from Fish Creek so a day trip (weather depending) should be on your cards. Maps and advice on short walks are available from the Tidal River Visitor Centre but our favourites included Squeaky Beach and Whisky Bay, where you can explore or play hide-and-seek among huge granite boulders. Look out for the local wildlife, too, including wombats, kangaroos and

A day At roughly two hours’ drive from Melbourne, make sure Lester and Harvey’s shops are open before you visit (Thursday to Monday is a safe bet). A week Extra time gives you the option to explore more of The Prom’s natural beauty – consider an overnight hike and book accommodation through Parks Victoria (but note that popular spots regularly book out months in advance, so keep an eye on the annual public ballot). The best beaches closer to Fish Creek include Waratah Bay’s Sandy Point and Walkerville South, also home to historic lime kiln ruins. More dining options are on offer in nearby Meeniyan, where you’ll find great wood-fire pizza (Trulli), bread (Pandesal Bakery) and big breakfasts (Moo’s). Airbnb offers plenty of good accommodation and we loved our two-storey beach shack in Walkerville, aptly named “By the sea all worries wash away”. ●

loud (Honour is installing sound baffles to dial it down a notch), which creates an unmistakable energy, balanced by the white minimalism, warm woods and devil’s ivy snaking along the ceiling. The menu is full of life, too, with unexpected flavour combos based on trad Japanese techniques with a mod, “putaneggonit” cafe spin. Mushrooms on toast appears as garlicky shiitake and shimenji fried in soy butter on soft, spongy triangles of milk toast with a poached egg. But wait, there’s more. Also on the (Robert Gordon) plate is a tempura enoki fan, crisp fried kale, saltbush leaves, dried cranberries, and a pate-like umami bomb of

fermented mushroom mousse. Sounds wacky, yeah? But it works. Black rice bircher is vegan, soaked in coconut and genmaicha (brown rice green tea), with granola, crushed pistachios and a mango-yuzu coulis. Or try Hibiki’s okonomiyaki, a cabbage and spring onion pancake. Honour’s mum is Japanese, and he’s based the recipe on her version. “My mum used to cook traditional foods at home and I’d stand by and watch,” he says. “It’s funny how taste and memories can last for ages.” If brunching from 11.30am onwards, try a bestseller box of lotus root chips amped with Sriracha, Kewpie mayo, and a dusting of dried

seaweed. Of equal flair is the drinks list filled with fresh, zingy juices, matcha-powered smoothies, and house spritzes, such as cold-drip tonic and blood orange. Tea is from Sassafras, and coffee features local hero Industry Beans, along with roasters gaining momentum in Japan. “My brother lives in Japan and he’s helping me source some rockstar roasters from there,” Honour says. “They have a different technique to Australia. It’s a much lighter roast.” Hibiki is Japanese for “to echo” and Honour’s first solo foray into the brunch world seems set to reverberate in Melbourne’s cafe scene. ●

“It’s also about focusing on more interesting cuts of meat, using whole animals ...” his wife Jules. At Brae, nothing is wasted and everything is recycled or reused. “It is my job of course, but for Jules, my wife and I, it’s our life,” Hunter says. “I guess because it is so in tune with our personal values. “It is sometimes much easier to communicate as well because you’ve got the backdrop of the farm – you can see the food growing. “You’ve got the building and the solar panels, which suggests things are being done in a very green way. Of course you have a dialogue at the table about those issues as well. It’s certainly a lot of work, but it’s very enjoyable work and I think it’s important work as well.” It makes sense then that Hunter is throwing his support behind a new initiative by Sustainability Victoria to try to encourage restaurants to have better practices when it comes to minimising food waste. An audit by Sustainability Victoria of 195 Victorian hospitality businesses found that, on

average, a remarkable 5.6 tonnes of food waste is produced by each venue every year. The organisation has launched the Love Food Hate Waste pilot program to encourage hospitality businesses to do things better. For Hunter, sustainability is important in every sense of his business. “One of the things we aim to do in terms of waste management is have a closedloop system,” he says. “If we are growing food on the property and we are not serving it to the customers, we’re making sure it stays on the property, whether that is through composting or feeding our chickens.” Sustainability is also considered when Hunter designs the restaurant’s famous menus. “It's also about focusing on more interesting cuts of meat, using whole animals and not just ringing up your supplier and getting everything to arrive wrapped in plastic,” he says. Brae’s customers have come to appreciate this

way of thinking. “We try and have the conversations through our work and what we do, with the customers,” Hunter says. “This is very important for us.” At the end of the day, Hunter says restaurants, and households for that matter, can save a lot of money if they have better sustainability practices. “Most businesses are throwing a few tonnes of waste away a year, something crazy like that,” Hunter says. “In a small cafe or business, that can turn out to be very expensive, sometimes like $25,000 a year. “When you look at hospitality at the moment, 25 grand is the difference between you making money or closing. It’s that black and white.” ● LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE Adopt the Dan Hunter approach at home. For tips, go to ● sustainability.vic.gov.au/ campaigns/love-food-hate-waste

Stepping back in time

S

ipping a cappuccino out of a china mug, while devouring a four-layered lemon coconut cake, I overhear a group of elderly ladies at a table nearby. They are reminiscing on the beauty of old Italy and the rapidly changing times. Here, I could mistake myself for being at a grandma’s house, instead I’m tucked into a cozy corner in North Melbourne off tram route 57. It has a sweet, generous and old-soul way about it. Despite the aged buildings being converted into newer establishments, the area still feels vintage, with plenty of nostalgia – including its tastes. A “camp-fire hot chocolate” from Mork Chocolate Brew House, a specialty chocolate store, smells like a night out in the woods. It is finished with maple smoke and a torched marshmallow for a full sensory M O R K C H O C O L AT E B R E W H O U S E

experience and there’s no shame here in polishing off an indulgent plate of sweets on your own. If it’s vintage you want to experience in the clothing domain, Martin Fella sells Europeanlabelled bags, accessories and even restored lamps. It’s even by the old school word-of-mouth while browsing that I am recommended to try Willow and Wine, a bar offering classic forms of entertainment, with shelves full of board games and secondhand books. However, for the more avant-garde grandmas or grandpas of Melbourne there is Quirk & Co,an eclectic gift store which sells playful and distinctive pieces, including best-selling banana lights Now all I need is a second slice of cake, perhaps a crochet rug, and a black and white photo album to show off to my new friends, two tables over. ● B E C D I C KI N S O N

SAM WOOD \ FITNESS

Off to a flying start A positive AM routine sets the foundation for a productive day.

I

am a strong believer that your morning routine sets the tone for the day. I’m not saying you need to get up at 5am, workout, meditate, make all of your weekly meals and walk the dog, all before 8am, but there are definitely some things you can do to set yourself up for a positive and productive day. Your morning routine might be simply waking up with purpose and with a positive intention to achieve what you need to each day. I know that for me, a positive morning routine helps me to begin my day with confidence and a healthy attitude that helps me to handle whatever the day throws at me, without constantly feeling like I’m playing catch up or dealing with unnecessary stress.

To live a well-to-do retirement is one thing, to do well in retirement is another.

Instead of worrying about what others get done in the morning, focus about what you can do to ensure you start the day ahead, not behind. Lots of my 28ers find that working out first thing in the morning is the best way to kick-start their day. Why? Exercise releases endorphins, so you will begin your day with a boosted mood, not to mention a feeling of accomplishment for getting your workout done – and there is no need to stress about squeezing it in later. I also find that morning workouts give me plenty of energy, which helps with my concentration and productivity. One of my favourite quotes is, “If you don’t know

You can tell a lot about a place by its people. We all know how feeling comfortable and at home in our environment can have a huge impact on our sense of well-being. That’s why at Rylands we focus a great deal on setting the right tone, from our fully licensed restaurant and five star facilities to our selection of well appointed two and three bedroom apartments. Here you’ll enjoy access to seamless, high quality services and 24 hour on-site staff for peace of mind. But most of all, you’ll find the people here make all the difference. Welcome to Rylands, your destination for a better retirement.

day with a boosted mood ...” where you are going, that is where you will end up”. This is why I like to start my day by making sure I know what I need to tick off. I will always look at my calendar in the morning to see what meetings or appointments I have that day so that I am prepared and know what needs to get done beforehand. Practising mindfulness is another great way to start your day. For me, this involves a long walk with baby Willow in the pram and dog Hendrix on the lead. I don’t get on my phone and I really enjoy being outdoors, getting some fresh air and spending some quality one-on-one time with little Willow. I know that it might mean setting that alarm five

minutes earlier, but I definitely recommend giving yourself time to either eat or prepare a healthy breakfast for later. For me, I can’t go past a healthy smoothie. Eating a balanced breakfast will give you the brainpower and energy you need to start your day and will prevent reaching for the quick (and often unhealthy) option when the 10am tummy grumbles kick in. I’ll finish by saying that the key here is to find your own morning routine. Once you find what works for you, you’ll never look back. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

Named for the liquidambar tree in its front garden, Shady Ambers is an old-timer in the prestige Riverside Estate. This pretty pocket has recorded Balwyn North’s highest prices in the past decade. It’s cool and peaceful, with a pin-oak canopy and a wealth of ’30s and ’40s mansions. Shady Ambers looks exactly like a child’s drawing of the perfect house – mullioned windows either side of and above the arched front door, pitched roof, quaint shutters. Ha. It’s all a hilarious decoy. Shady Ambers was renovated in 2008-09 and is now a 21st-century bastion of marblefinished, practical spaces oriented toward a north-facing garden with a pool, waterfall and dine-out terrace. There are formal living and dining rooms, a study and, on the first floor, a presidential-style main bedroom suite with a stunning view. However, the main hangout is the open-plan family and meals area, which opens to the bluestone barbecue terrace and fully tiled pool. In the hardwood-floored hall, cutaways lead to the carpeted living room and its black marble fireplace. Step across the hall to the two-room study, with sitting area and desk, bookcase and cupboard. The dining room is sleek, with full-length windows sliding open to a night-lit central courtyard with a pond. Large families will enjoy the open plan, where a gas pebble fireplace takes centre stage. The white marble kitchen has a waterfall island, Miele wall and microwave ovens and a 900-millimetre gas cooktop. The butler’s pantry is effectively a second kitchen.
