Miranda Tapsell is easy to fall in love with and movie-goers agree – in its first week, her new film Top End Wedding took more than $1 million at the box office. In an interview with journalist Rachelle Unreich, the Larrakia actor from West Arnhem Land shares why she co-wrote the screenplay to the Indigenous-led feature flick, explaining how she had spent plenty of money on tickets over the years to films that failed to depict diverse representations. From talking about the thrill of Sundance to marrying her beloved in real life and realising her potential, enjoy meeting the marvellous Miranda. ●

““I am Barry Du Bois ” … and I’m a TV presenter Amanda Keller says we’re like a pod of dolphins on
The Living Room. We were in love with each other as soon as we saw each other. We’re very different, the four of us on The Living Room, but we have an incredible bond. Amanda started as a researcher, and she is the ultimate TV presenter, I think. The difference with me is I’d never been on TV, didn’t want to be on TV and next minute I was going flat out. From 2000 to 2004 I got a little rocky with depression, as a lot of middle-aged men do. I was turning over $20 to $30 million a year and my mum passed away of cancer. I broke my back and I put on weight and wasn’t eating well. So at 45 I decided to retire. I could see a financial crisis coming – I cashed out and went sailing around the world. I have a close friend, Pete, who was on Better Homes and Gardens. He’d come up with this idea that we could make a TV show on the boat. He showed some footage of me and him sailing in Europe to the executive producer of The Renovators. I was very lucky to meet Amanda in that first year, and then The Living Room came about. The first time I got cancer one of the doctors said I’d be better off just to spend time with my family and that I had about three months to live. I said, “You’re off your rocker, you haven’t got a clue”. When I was going through my medical journey (Du Bois has survived two bouts of cancer), my friends were right beside me. When Chris Brown was away filming in Africa, he’d ring me every Friday. Miguel Maestre was always here cooking or bringing something to the hospital, and Amanda was always at my side. What I’ve got is not curable. But I know that an investment in positivity, in good food and exercise, is going to pay great dividends. My twins are nearly seven. They’re incredible. My wife Leonie and I had about 12 or 13 failed IVF attempts and then the twins were born on the seventh time of surrogacy in India. I work with beautiful people, I have an amazing family and I live an amazing life – there’s not a lot to be sad about. ● Barry Du Bois is the new menswear ambassador for Harris Scarfe ● harrisscarfe.com.au

COVER STORY Actor and screenwriter Miranda Tapsell dazzles in a beautifully Australian love story.
Wedded bliss
P
icture this unlikely scene: several journalists attend a private screening of the new Australian movie Top End Wedding. It’s a romantic comedy in which a cute, plucky girl (played by Miranda Tapsell, of The Sapphires movie and TV’s Love Child fame), is set to marry her beloved (Bohemian Rhapsody’s Gwilym Lee). When she discovers that her mother has disappeared (rom-com trope: obstacle alert), the couple set off to find her. But by the end of that movie, in the darkened theatrette, something unexpected occurred: many journalists sat quietly in their seats, immobile, yet moved. “What just happened?” we asked one another. The short answer is that Miranda Tapsell happened.

It wasn’t just that the movie marked a starmaking turn for the actress. Rather, it’s that she identified that well-rounded, feel-good Indigenous stories need to be told and then penned one herself, co-writing the screenplay to Top End Wedding and showcasing her birthplace, the Northern Territory, in the process. By the time the movie shifts to the Tiwi Islands – aka “island of smiles” – it’s impossible to feel unemotional. From this writer’s perspective, it feels like Australian audiences haven’t been given much access to this viewpoint of their Indigenous heritage. It’s impossible not to feel a unified pride in our land when we’re shown this segment of its beauty and culture. For Tapsell, that was the point and it’s clear she wasn’t trying to make a film with a message, but rather show that, yes, you can make an Australian romantic comedy with an Indigenous lead. “I want the fabric of storytelling [in Australia] to be different. I want more Indigenous stories to be centralised. I believe that you can’t have connections to this country without having an Indigenous aspect of it [being] a part,” she says.
But when it came to finding roles, Tapsell wasn’t seeing the kind of film that ran to her tastes being made in Australia. “[I figured that] if I told a positive story, people who may not have met an Aboriginal person before don’t have to alienate themselves from that situation,” Tapsell says. “They can empathise, and they can see these people just as people … and I think it’s really nice [to make this movie] in a time where [there’s diversity] – Crazy Rich Asians, The Incredible Jessica James, The Big Sick ... The stories that aren’t mainstream are being normalised more. “And that’s good, because I’ve spent a lot of money on watching films that aren’t about me.” She hopes to change that. Top End Wedding was accepted into the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in the US (where around 112 features get chosen from a submitted pool of 4000). “When [producer] Rosemary Blight called me and said, ‘We got into Sundance,’ I said, ‘You’re lying to me’,” she says. “When I saw that we were with films [that starred] Mindy Kaling and Lupita Nyong’o and Viola Davis – women I look up to so much – for my film, to be a part of that world, is so surreal.”
“I felt like people diluted my worth because of my height, my gender and my race. And I wanted to show them that those

three things are just the best part of me.” Growing up in Kakadu, Tapsell’s parents aimed to give her a culturally and educationally-rich childhood, nurturing in her a great love of books and story-telling. An only child, Tapsell says her parents couldn’t have any more children after she was born, “but I was surrounded by cousins, and I was allowed to express myself in the ways that I wanted”. That included performing in the lounge room, signing up to tap dance classes and – eventually – being on stage. “Before I decided I wanted to be an actor, I felt like people could only talk to me about being short, or being brown, or being a girl. And I just wanted to show people that they were positive things,” she says. “I felt like people diluted my worth because of my height, my gender and my race. And I wanted to show them that those three things are just the best part of me.” It made sense that NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) would be the next step for Tapsell after high school.
And rewarding for someone who admits has “a very heightened sense of self-doubt”. She had another cause for celebration recently, meeting and marrying writer James Colley after she’d completed writing Top End Wedding. “I had such a wonderful time writing about love, and the kind of love that I wanted around me – I just feel like I manifested it, and met someone who [made me say], ‘Wow, this is the person I want to be with’,” she says. Early on as an actor, Tapsell says “one of the biggest rewards for me was when people would say, ‘I had no idea you had this capacity or this potential in you’. And I was like, ‘Well, that’s because you’ve never taken the time to properly talk to me’. “When I found I could do that with stories – that I could share with people the world that I see, and what I believe in – I felt so empowered.” It’s a power trip the world is watching closely. ● TOP END WEDDING \ In cinemas now.

ENTERTAINMENT Would you buy a house with a stranger? Kat Stewart’s new show puts it to the test. Wo r d s

NETWORK TEN
I
t was easy for actor Kat Stewart to say yes to the new Network 10 drama Five Bedrooms. There is a lot of buzz about the series, in which five strangers, who meet at the singles’ table at a wedding, make a snap decision to chip in and buy a house together. The show is being compared to Offspring Offspring, the huge hit in which Stewart starred as the much-loved Billie Proudman. “I’ve got little kids, so I don’t want to just be away from my family unless it is to work on something that means a lot to me, and I felt with this show it certainly did,” she says of accepting a role as one of the buyers in Five Bedrooms. “The scripts were so good, and it was a really fresh and timely idea. I mean, we are not reinventing the wheel, but I think these are characters you don’t necessarily see on commercial television. There’s a freshness to it, and an energy and generosity to it that I like, too. “The characters are not friends, but they buy this house together because they’re so stressed about not being able to afford buying into the real estate market as singles.” Five Bedrooms is set in Melbourne, where a March market report by Domain shows that, across the city, it takes a first-home buyer couple an average of five years and nine months to save a 20 per cent deposit to purchase a house. For an apartment in Melbourne, the average is four years. In some areas of Melbourne, such as Boroondara and the bayside, the time to save soars to 12 years for houses. In Sydney, it takes on average six years and two months (rising to 20 years in the eastern suburbs); four years and three months in Brisbane (seven

Perfect strangers years and three months in the inner city), threeand-a-half years in Perth; just under four years in Adelaide; and nearly five years in Canberra. So the concept of Five Bedrooms doesn’t seem like a bad idea at all, and in property-obsessed Australia, it’s surprising that there haven’t been more dramas that explore the real estate theme. “It is so much harder than it was for previous generations,” Stewart says of buying a house. “So I think the theme of Five Bedrooms is a real potential solution.” Stewart stars alongside Stephen Peacocke, Doris Younane, Katie Robertson, Hugh Sheridan and Roy Joseph. “The cast have clicked really, really well and that was the case in Offspring too,” she says. “That is such a delight, because it doesn't always really happen.” Each episode will explore one of the main characters. Stewart plays lawyer Liz. “Liz cares what people think of her,” Stewart says. “Never in a million years did she think she would be in a situation where she was divorced and without a
house, with her finances all tied up and going into a situation where she’s going into a sharehouse in her 40s. But that’s exactly what happens.” Stewart hopes Five Bedrooms will take off in the manner of Offspring Offspring, which ran for seven seasons until 2017, and like co-star Asher Keddie, Stewart says “never say never” about the show one day returning. At this stage, though, it appears unlikely. Looking back, she thinks Offspring was a true gift to an actor – more than the average TV show. “You go into filming a pilot and you think ‘I hope it works out’,” she says of Offspring. “It was amazing to be doing it eight years later, with a hiatus in the middle. It was just the gift that kept on giving. “I made such life-long friends on Offspring and I just loved Billie. “She was like a friend that you sometimes wish who would go home, but then I was always glad to see her. I loved every minute.” ● FIVE BEDROOMS \ Premieres on Network 10 and 10 Play at 8.30pm on May 15.

elbourne folk pop sisters Byll and Beth Stephen started making music as The Little Stevies more than 14 years ago. Since then, they have released three albums, an EP and a live recording, toured the US with Bright Eyes and opened for Men At Work’s Colin Hay in San Diego. They have just released their first album in six years titled Stopped Wishing I Was Somewhere Else. The delay between recordings wasn’t intentional, but instead was
largely owed to their side project taking off – a children’s music ensemble they dubbed The Teeny Tiny Stevies. That project has seen them write songs for Sesame Street in the US, license their music videos to ABC KIDS TV and be nominated for an ARIA Award for Best Children’s Album last year. The new band has taken up the bulk of their time when not raising four children between them. “The Teeny Tiny Stevies started out

It’s hilarious to think about it as we would have been terrible at comedy.” It was while trying to help her sister figure out ways to toilet train her three-year-old that the idea to start a kids’ musical act sprung to mind. “That’s when we thought, ‘Why don’t we write the music to help our kids get through these particular challenges?’” she says. callops are one of my favourite seafoods, as they are versatile, quick and easy to cook. They also take on flavours really well and are generally best eaten just cooked. I’m using fresh scallops in this recipe, but frozen works just fine. It is important to remember to thaw the scallops completely overnight and to pat them dry so they do not release excess liquid in the cooking process. I’ve used speck to add extra richness and saltiness to the dish – substitute with bacon or kaiserfleisch. Pangrattato in Italian translates to bread crumbs – also known as poor man’s Parmesan. However, it is definitely not second best and works well with the scallops. I have also used scallop shells to serve them in. You can buy these from your local seafood supplier – I usually get my seafood from Aptus Seafoods at South Melbourne Market. Just make sure you boil the shells to ensure they are extra clean. ●

Scallops, speck with lemon & parsley pangrattato Ingredients (Makes 12) 12 large scallops 50g speck, finely diced 2 tbsp olive oil ½ cup clarified butter Pangrattato 1 cup of panko bread crumbs, or use normal bread crumbs as a substitute ½ bunch of parsley, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, minced Zest of 1 lemon ¼ cup olive oil Garnish Chives and micro sorrel leaves Method ■ Dry the scallops, removing any excess liquid. This is important to ensure that the scallops sear and do not steam in their own juices. Once the scallops are dry, season them with salt and pepper. ■ In a medium-sized pan, add some butter and place it on high heat. Heat butter to smoking point before
searing the scallops. Place the scallops flat-side down in the hot pan. Remember to not overcrowd the pan or the temperature will drop and you will not get a good sear. ■ Sear for 60-90 seconds on each side, depending on the thickness of the scallop. You may need more or less time, but you want the centre to still be slightly translucent. ■ Remove scallops and set aside. ■ In the meantime, place the olive oil and speck in another pan and fry until slightly crispy and golden brown. Reserve the extra oil in the pan to drizzle over the scallops later. ■ For the pangrattato, place the olive oil in a pan on low heat. Add the garlic, lemon zest and bread crumbs and toast until the crumbs turn golden brown. Remove from pan and add the chopped parsley. ■ To serve, place the scallops on the cleaned shells, spoon over the speck and some of the oil. Sprinkle a generous amount of pangrattato over the top of each scallop. Garnish with some chopped chives and micro sorrel leaves. ●

elbourne comedian Joel Creasey is set to divide his time between Australia and the US once his Eurovision Song Contest hosting duties are over. Creasey will front the SBS coverage of Eurovision again this year with Myf Warhurst from the Israeli city of Tel Aviv. Singer Kate Miller-Heidke is representing Australia and hits the stage in the first semi final. “I love it here,” Creasey says from his new base in Los Angeles. “I think the traditional route for Australian comedians and stand-ups is to head to London, but I think America suits my style well.” Creasey has high-profile American supporters in the comedy scene, none more so than the late Joan Rivers, who was a committed fan of his. But he isn’t saying goodbye to Melbourne, as he will keep two home bases instead. He is excited to again host Eurovision, after making international news last year in Portugal when he was praised for his comments on Twitter by none other than author JK Rowling. hoosing a school is one of the weightiest decisions that parents must make. Do you opt for a single-sex or co-ed school? Do you choose a public or private school? If your child is sports-mad or a talented musician, which school will foster those interests? If they are academic, which school will stretch their intellect? Diana Vernon, principal of Methodist Ladies’ College, says some general steps can help ensure parents make the best choice for their child. “Choosing a school is a huge decision and parents approach it in different ways. Some people are clear because of family history, or they have friends at that school,” Vernon says. “But if you’re not sure or you are new to the area, it can leave parents wondering where to go.” One key element for parents to look for in a school is an alignment with family values. As a leading Australian independent girls’ school, MLC highlights its core values of respect, responsibility and compassion. Around 2000 girls are enrolled at MLC from prep to year 12, making it a diverse learning community. Vernon says a strong academic tradition, an equally robust co-curricular program and a focus on student wellbeing are usually important factors when selecting a school. “As a parent, you will know your daughter’s interests. Find out whether the school you have in mind will be able to support her in developing these, as well as provide opportunities to explore further experiences you might not have considered yet,” Vernon says. “What she could do in the years ahead that might engage and inspire her? If your child likes music, what is on offer to progress her passion? If she has an aptitude for languages, a program like French Immersion may be of benefit. What opportunities are there for your child to go on international tours and exchange programs?” Following these considerations, Vernon says it is vital to attend school open days. MLC runs a series of open mornings during the year that give prospective families a chance to meet with teachers and current students and to explore the facilities. “You can do all the due diligence around

researching online, but without visiting a school you won’t get a real sense as to whether the school will suit your child,” she says. “I enjoy meeting families and discussing what they are looking for in a school. “A common question I’m asked is about MLC uniquely being a large school; I like to help them see that it means more opportunity and pathways for their daughters to choose from and to pursue, and how our students form friendships across multiple groups. There is truly something for everyone.” Open mornings at MLC begin with an overview presentation about the school by Vernon. Families then take student-led tours of the school
for an opportunity to learn about life at MLC through a student lens. “Prospective students also love being able to ask questions of their student guides and hear about their experiences first-hand,” Vernon says. The event finishes with a chance to ask questions of the principal and vice-principals, heads of department and admissions team over a casual morning tea. Vernon says people often return for a second tour, and says the events offer “real insight into whether this is a place where they could see their daughter being happy and thriving”. ● SARAH MARINOS

Houses by Fasham Johnson are incredible seekers of sun. This colossus, on two titles and facing north across its own tennis court, was built in 1987 and deserves that decade’s accolade: It’s totally baggin’ some rays, so BYO Wayfarers. Renovated in 2017, the property is still classic Fasham, with vaulted ceilings and full-length windows. Aloof behind its high wall, it reveals its warmth at a gentle pace. A sunken lounge, a dining room and a kitchen, meals and family area opening to pergolas above the court, pool and garden offer elegant places to relax. Five bedrooms include two main suites, plus a study and a retreat. The fully-tiled pool and spa come with a poolhouse with a kitchenette and bathroom. It’s ideal for grand final barbecues and for kids’ parties, as the floodlit tennis court doubles as an all-games, all-weather playground. The front lounge is a conversation pit to inspire creative thinking. Step down from the hall to charcoal-grey carpet, which flows to an open fireplace with a tiny door for bringing in the wood. Original timber sliding doors lead to the decked front garden and to the tennis court. The dining room is striking in slatted cedar and seats about 10. There’s a hidden coat cupboard in the hall wall. MasterChefs will foresee good times in the kitchen, new in pearl stone with a stainless steel island and Gaggenau cooktop and twin ovens. The walk-in pantry has an appliance nook. Grey-beige floor tiles unite the family room (with entertainment unit) and the meals area, which has bifolds to a poolside deck with retractable awning. There are two ground-floor bedrooms, one with a dual-
