Sam Kerr is one the best footballers in the world, occupying a place in fans’ imaginations alongside players like Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell. She plays here and in the US and Australian soccer lovers have the opportunity to watch her take flight in the green and gold in France when the Matildas contest the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In this week’s cover feature, accomplished sports journalist Peter Hanlon charts Kerr’s rise to the top of her sport through the memories and reflections of those who have known her since she was knee-high to a round ball. ●

FIRST PERSON
““I am Richard T Phan ” … and I dress barristers and judges I was a bad student – it took me two goes to finish year 12 – but I was disposed to retail quite early in my working life. My first retail job was when I was 15. It was work experience at a boutique retailer in Footscray and I realised how good it was to have money in my pocket. I left home when I was 15, so I went out on my own early. Eventually, I got a job at Georges. From there, I went to Harrolds and then I was picked up by Ludlows. That was 21 years ago now. I worked at Ludlows as an employee for 12 years before buying the business from the owners. My experience in fashion before legal regalia led me to conclusion that it was a fickle market and the opportunity to move into legal wear struck me as unique. We are the only dedicated legal-wear retailer in Australia. We supply legal regalia for advocates – essentially, the jackets, robes and wigs – [and] we supply courts nationwide and internationally. We not only make the robes, we design them, sometimes in partnership with Australian courts. For example, when the Supreme Court of Victoria abolished barristers’ wigs, it became necessary to change the robes. The robes they were wearing at the time were designed to be paired with a wig, and when you took the wig away it was quite a peculiar outfit. So, they engaged us to redesign their robes. Product development is a fun part of the job for me. No two orders are identical – almost every order is customised and the options are almost limitless. We ascertain what our customers are after very quickly. Some customers want more braiding or buttons, or buttons that are covered with velvet instead of another cloth, or shiny buttons, or maybe extra pockets. It’s also subject to the individual and about what they can carry off. You can’t have a young barrister in an ostentatious jacket, whereas a senior barrister can demand that. It’s also a great leveller. Say two people go to court – if one is wearing a $2000 suit and the other is wearing a $400 suit the perception is that the one in the more expensive suit will perform better. Legal regalia levels that playing field. ● ● ludlows.com.au

COVER STORY
Stronger and better than ever entering the World Cup, Matildas sensation Sam Kerr is rewriting record books.
A
s expressions of sporting exultation go, it has an inevitability to rival the famous Usain “Lightning” Bolt victory salute. Watch Sam Kerr play soccer, and there’s a good chance you’ll see her take flight. For Australian Sports Commission boss Kate Palmer, it’s the go-to moment that has her beaming when she’s asked if we’ve arrived at a golden era for women in sport. “When the Matildas play, you expect them to win, you expect Sam to score, you expect her to do a backflip in celebration,” Palmer says. “How fabulous.” For Mano Psanoudakis, Kerr’s first coach with Western Knights in Perth, it’s validation – on high rotation – of the vow he made at each season’s presentation night, as he routinely handed one of the two girls in his junior boys’ team the champion player trophy. “Every year I’d say to the whole club, ‘One day, you’re all going to be watching Sam on television – she’s going to play for Australia’,” Psanoudakis says. “To see her backflip after scoring, gosh, I feel proud that I knew her.”
naturals for whom foot and ball can seem attached by Velcro. What she had was an athleticism, rawness of speed and ability to read the game that made onlookers gasp. “She would stay out of the contest then come running through, take it and go. She could steal it on the run at full speed, that was her talent.” His son Nick played midfield, Kerr up front as striker. The Knights’ game plan was simple. “The team strategy was just ‘kick it long to Sam, she’s faster than everyone’,” Nick Psanoudakis says. “And it worked.” Kerr’s dad, Roger, was born in Calcutta to an English father and basketball-playing Indian mother; her mum, Roxanne, is a former high-level netballer with plenty of AFL in her family tree – as well as an uncle, jockey John Miller, who rode Galilee to victory in the 1966 Melbourne Cup. Kerr’s brother Daniel is a 220-game West Coast premiership player who was a regular at his sister’s junior soccer games, as she zipped about wearing his No.4 jersey. Sam’s contribution to the family’s sporting story will trump all if she orchestrates a

fairy tale at this year’s World Cup in France, which for Australia starts against Italy in Valenciennes on June 9. Buoyed by consistent results over the past two years, the Matildas fear no opponent on the world stage. It’s no coincidence this period has seen the realisation of Kerr’s huge potential. “It was a little bit of her falling in love with the game, to go and practise more, do some of the individual things she needed to do,” van Egmond says of her blossoming, conscious of what Kerr has often admitted – that initially, she didn’t like soccer. Since 2011, she’s lived a global footballer’s whirlwind – half the year at home playing W-League for Perth Glory, the rest in the US, where she’s now with Chicago Red Stars and is the national competition’s all-time greatest goal scorer. Van Egmond (who remembers the young Kerr not as reserved, but “cheeky as hell”) says a light-bulb

Emily van Egmond’s career has run in tandem with Kerr’s; both are 25 and long-time members of the national team. As a Matildas’ assistant, Emily’s father Gary could be excused a coach’s professional detachment when it comes to Kerr’s feats. No chance. “I’ve seen the journey, and I’m over the moon – not just from the footballing perspective, but the person she’s turned into,” Gary van Egmond says. “She’s a credit to herself, to her family, and everyone along the way who’s helped and guided her.” If the current landscape had arrived 15 years earlier, Sam Kerr would never have played soccer, let alone become Australian captain. She was “all AFL”, and only took a round-ball diversion at 12 when playing with the boys was no longer feasible. Psanoudakis remembers a youngster who rarely spoke, and who at first didn’t boast the touch of the

moment came during her stint with Western New York Flash, alongside legendary American striker Abby Wambach, who inspired her to work harder. Kerr has said of Wambach: “[She] just changed my view on when I leave football what I want people to remember me for.” She’s known an athlete’s hardship – a knee reconstruction in her teens and, in 2015, a foot fracture that sidelined her for six months. She’s emerged stronger, better – and happier.
T
his year Kerr reportedly became the first Australian female footballer to earn $1 million in a year, and trumped a host of sponsored male athletes by becoming the face of Nike Australia. In a mini-documentary produced by the sporting behemoth – Sam Kerr: Birthplace of Dreams – Kerr talks about finding love with Perth and Chicago teammate Nikki Stanton, a Seattle native. The couple laugh about Kerr being snapped out of the doldrums as doctors feared the foot injury would end her playing days. Kerr says she “had a breakdown” in a shopping centre, recalling Stanton telling her firmly, “You need to pull it together.” Kerr credits Stanton with helping her reach fulfilment. “It’s really nice to have someone in your life who challenges you to be the best you. That’s been a really big part of the change in my career – is her being herself, she’s just a safe place for me.” ASC chief Palmer is revelling in the bigger picture. She knows the likes of Kerr, Ellyse Perry, Ash Barty and Steph Gilmore – global figures all – are changing the landscape for young girls, forever. To that notion of being in a golden age for women’s sport, she happily says: no, that’s yet to come. “You have a choice now – how great is that?” she declares. “Every single little girl out there can have a choice, and can be recognised for the amazing athletes they truly are.” Having made her choice and embraced it, Kerr is shooting for the stars. Asked in Birthplace of Dreams what might happen if she scores the winning goal in the World Cup final, she pauses, thinks, visualises. Then she answers with a winning smile: “Backflip!” ●

JA N E R O C CA
ctor Erik Thomson became a household name as Dave Rafter in Packed to the Rafters alongside Rebecca Gibney and for the past three years played George Turner on another TV family drama, 800 Words. The New Zealand-born and Australian-based actor – who has more than 30 year’s experience in the business – also found time in his busy schedule to star in the Aussie film Storm Boy, alongside Geoffrey Rush. What’s more, he’s just finished filming with
Bono’s daughter, Irish actress Eve Hewson, for a new BBC mini-series The Luminaries which is due for release later this year. “It’s been a super busy time for me,” says Thomson, who has been commuting between New Zealand and his home in South Australia to do the bulk of his filming. “But it was great to pick up a job with Storm Boy as it was filmed locally – just up the road so to speak, and I knew the director Shawn Seet.” Storm Boy is an Australian drama based on the novella by Colin Thiele of the same name. The film adaptation also stars Jai Courtney. “We shot Storm Boy 18 months ago and I did all my parts in a week,” Thomson says. “I was approached by the producers directly to see if I would be interested in playing the role of Malcolm Downer.
“It was a great opportunity and I was home – it was a win-win situation.” Thomson won a Silver Logie for Most Popular Actor for All Saints in 2003 and a Silver Logie for Best Actor in 800 Words in 2016. He says he is disappointed 800 Words was axed after three seasons. “I really enjoyed making 800 Words. It was still popular, not only in Australia but also in New Zealand,” he says. “It had been playing in America as well. It wasn’t massive in the world, but we had a nice response to it. 800 Words occupied a nice genre on TV that no one else was doing. “It was filling that Packed to the Rafters gap and was nice family viewing. I was surprised and disappointed it was cancelled. “The whole world of commercial TV is changing quite rapidly and everyone is trying to work out what will work and sometimes I think mistakes are made and that’s one of them.” Thomson, who has to remain tight-lipped about revealing too many details surrounding The Luminaries, says he’s been enjoying every moment of filming in New Zealand. The series is based on the Man Booker Prizewinning novel of the same name, which was written by New Zealand author Eleanor Catton. “The Luminaries is set in New Zealand’s 1860s gold rush and is a big sweeping epic drama of revenge, murder, lust and greed,” Thomson says. Two of its leading actresses include Hewson and French star Eva Green, best known for her roles in James Bond’s Casino Royale, Penny Dreadful, Sin City and A Dame to Kill For For. What’s more, it’s directed by a fellow Australian – Claire McCarthy (Ophelia/The The Waiting City City). The six-hour long adaptation was co-written by Catton and McCarthy, with filming taking place in both Auckland and on the South Island’s West Coast. “This is a completely different role for me,” Thomson says. “In fact, when the credits role and people see my name up there they’ll struggle to spot me. I look so different. “I go full period with a completely different type of character to what I am used to playing. I play Dick Mannering – he’s a local colourful character but I can’t say too much.” The topic of Hewson’s famous dad didn’t come up on set. “Eve is a fantastic young Irish actress and yes, we all knew she is Bono’s daughter but I didn’t speak to her about it,” Thomson says. “It was one of those acknowledged but unsaid things on set. It was obvious I knew her background, we worked great on set but didn’t talk much music. We just got on with the job.” ● STORM BOY \ Out now on Blu-ray and DVD.

raig Foster is a man on a mission. The former Socceroo captain made international headlines earlier this year when he joined a campaign to free Melbourne-based Bahraini soccer player Hakeem al-Araibi from a Thai jail. A refugee and Australian permanent resident, al-Araibi was wrongly imprisoned for two months in Thailand after he arrived for a holiday, held while waiting for Bahrain to lodge a formal extradition request relating to an arson attack, of which he stressed his innocence. It was an inspirational campaign to free him that Foster, 50, admits he lived and breathed every single day

“Politicians have acted in a humane, compassionate and a fair way without the divisive hyperbole.”
From p13
al-Araibi was in jail. “It was incredibly intense,” Foster says. “It was the most intense few months I’ve ever experienced because of a number of factors – the time involved, the uncertainty. “The dynamics kept changing every day.” Al-Araibi was detained for 76 days, and said he feared being tortured and killed if sent back to Bahrain. The pressure took its toll not only on the young soccer player but the entire support team who were trying to get him out. “I don’t know how much longer we could have all kept it up, but of course we would have,” Foster says. “We were committed to the degree that we were never going to stop. “But I think it would have come to the point where we may have, perhaps, just collapsed.” The day in February and the few hours after al-Araibi was released from prison, until he flew out of Bangkok around midnight, were some of the more tense hours. Only when the plane was airborne could al-Araibi’s supporters breathe easier. “When he hit the air on the way to Australia it was a very, very, nice moment,” Foster reflects. “It wasn’t excitement, it wasn’t triumph, and it wasn’t pleasure. “It was just an absolute incredible sense of elation and just extraordinary relief.” Now Foster wants more, telling Domain Review that he hasn’t ruled out a future stint in politics. He is as committed as ever to fighting as a human rights’ campaigner and not just within the sporting world. Foster is focused on improving circumstances for
refugees, Indigenous Australians in sport and everyday life, and he firmly believes Australia needs to do more to combat climate change. “I think it’s possible down the track,” he says of entering politics. “I think we need to change the focus of our national discussion. “Look at other countries like New Zealand, how public figures [like Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern] have acted and reacted to major social issues like climate change, refugees and asylum seekers. “Politicians have acted in a humane, compassionate and a fair way without the divisive hyperbole.” While many Australians unfamilar with the round ball game grew to know Foster through the #SaveHakeem campaign, football fans know him as one of the sport’s most prominent figures, who retired from professional football in 2003.
As well as a decorated national player, Foster is a face of the game on Australian television. As the long-time chief football analyst for SBS, he is key to the station’s coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019, which kicks off in France on June 8. Growing up in Lismore in New South Wales and playing for Australia, Foster always knew he had an activist in him. “To be quite honest, when I was in the Socceroos I was involved in various charities and always took the time, particularly to help kids’ charities and NGOs,” he says. His family – wife Lara and their three children – have been supportive every step of the way, including during the gruelling campaign to bring al-Araibi home. The plight of others who are less fortunate has always been a topic of
discussion around the Fosters’ dinner table in Sydney. A few months after the dramatic release from prison, things are looking up for al-Araibi. The 25-year-old recently took up a position at Football Victoria as a community and human rights advocate. “Hakeem is really thriving,” Foster says. “I think perhaps he has this new energy because he feels supported by the entire country. “He recently became an Australian citizen. He keeps saying to me that he wants to contribute to the country, he feels very strongly that he needs to give something back and I think that’s very exciting, to be a role model for young people.” As for Australia’s Matildas, who begin their World Cup campaign against Italy in Valenciennes on June 9, Foster has high hopes. Foster will be part of SBS’s coverage alongside Tracey Holmes, Joey Peters, and David Basheer and Sarah Walsh, who will be on the ground in France. “I think the Australian women’s national team has an affection from this country now that is at a new high and the players are very focused both on and off the field,” Foster says. He is also excited that after all the hard work, the Matildas, and women’s sport in general, are gaining the recognition they deserve. “The rise of women’s sport generally has been really heartening to see,” Foster says. “It’s been too long coming.” ● FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP FRANCE 2019 \ Starts June 8. ith every ring of the phone my heart rate increases. I’m calling Marco Pierre White at 10.30pm London time. He was the first celebrity chef, the first Brit to win three Michelin stars and he made Gordon Ramsay cry, so I am wondering how a journalist calling at bedtime will fare. “Hello you,” says a cool English voice, “how are you?” Today you’re more likely to see White on television than in a kitchen, but he has more than 35 restaurants across the United Kingdom under five different brands. Right now he’s in Melbourne for Good Food Month, where he joins Phil Wood from Point Leo Estate for a dinner on June 5, Andrew McConnell for a Sunday lunch on June 9, and is mentoring the Young Chefs’ Lunch. When I ask if there’s still a place for toughness in the kitchen, he doesn’t exactly say no. “You have to remember that chefs scream orders so people hear those orders. When I was cooking I had 30 chefs in my kitchen. I can’t just take an order and say, ‘In your own time boys and girls, could I have two salads of crab and one beef.’ It doesn’t work like that,” he says. “Service is service; it’s not personal.” Despite his currency, White has a tendency to start his considered sentences with “When I was a young man” – an indicator of how the industry has changed. When he started cooking being a chef was a job. Now it’s a passion to be followed. “I think what’s interesting with young chefs is that they’re more inquisitive than my generation … they’re more interested in food and they want to push the boundaries and express themselves more. They’re refining and making food more exciting,” he says. I suggest his own inquisitiveness
Yes, chef! could be responsible for his success. “Well, I’m just naturally inquisitive, that’s my problem,” he says. When I tell him he should have been a journalist, he admits his dyslexia would have made that impossible but points out similarities: cooks deliver food of a certain standard within a certain time frame, journalists deliver stories to a deadline. Both are yelled at. With a reputation for yelling himself, White refutes the notion of the customer always being right. But it’s not about ego; it’s about respecting others. “Rudeness is not
correct, is it? They don’t have the right to be rude to staff, what they should do is speak with the manager,” he says. If you ever find yourself across the table from White, make sure it’s not at a degustation. And if you wait on him, for the love of England, don’t ask if he’s enjoying his meal two minutes after it’s served. “I don’t want to be told what I’m going to eat. I don’t want a set menu and tiny little plates of food. If you ask your friends, ‘What’s your favourite restaurant?’ none of them will say Michelin-starred
restaurants, or three-hatted restaurants, in your case.” According to White the best restaurants have a comfortable environment and uncomplicated service delivered to a high standard at a good price point. “Feed people and give them something that’s real rather than something that is visually attractive but has no substance. The restaurants I mentioned [see ‘Marco Pierre White’s Melbourne], they feed you at a good price point and that’s the future. They’re the trendsetters,” he says. ●

MICHAEL ROWL AND \ BOOK CLUB
Eye of the social media storm T H E R E VI E W
B
en Elton, the man who gave the world The Young Ones and Blackadder Blackadder, has found a fresh comic target in the form of the outrage chamber that is social media. Old-school London detective Mick Matlock is investigating a series of suspicious murders in the build-up to a referendum on whether England should leave the United Kingdom (Brexit is but a bad memory). All the victims had engaged in some form of identity politics and poor Matlock finds himself battling the “PC Fun Police” as he tries desperately not to offend hyper-sensitive interest groups and permanently furious tweeters. The book begins with Matlock being hauled over the coals for some unintentional victim-blaming. “Why did everything have to be so tricky?” is his
constant lament. The detective has to navigate his way through a verbal minefield, where one misplaced word could mean career death. Elton cleverly builds a suspenseful thriller laced with so many delicious real-world scenarios. There are the eerily familiar Brexit-style hostilities (“a battle between latte-sipping snowflakes and commonsense patriots”); a succession of #MeToo scandals; and an all-too-realistic sub-plot involving Russian meddling in British politics.
Michael Rowland is the co-host of ABC News Breakfast, weekdays from 6am on ABC TV

But it’s the vortex of Twitter that Elton particularly delights in skewering: “The entire population appears to be itching for a fight because everybody afforded them insufficient respect.” Sound familiar? Identity Crisis is Ben Elton’s 16th novel and, for this long-time fan, one of his best! ●

olin Hay left Melbourne for the US in 1989, chasing his dream as the front man of Men At Work. Now at 65, he reflects on the city that inspired him to write some of his biggest hits. “I still vividly remember the Men at Work tour we did before we became successful back in 1981,” says Hay, who lives in Los Angeles with his wife Cecilia Noel. “It was as if the audience knew something big was going to happen to us. They gave us their good will
and sent us off to take on the world,” he recalls of promoting their debut album Business As Usual. “The memory is really imprinted in my mind strongly,” he says. “And as a musician, that’s what you continually try to go for – those moments that seem to give you a feeling of euphoria.” Hay, who returned to Australia to perform at the Byron Bay Blues Festival, as well as shows in Melbourne with his band The Immigrants, says he never really

I am back on the road again with him this year.” ● ● colinhay.com

made peace with any members of Men At Work after they disbanded. “The band never really broke up, some guys got sacked and the rest left except for me. I turned around and everybody was gone,” he says. “I don’t think of Men at Work with any negativity. “I have a sense of deep sadness when I think about it because it was such terrible communication between people that never ended up being resolved. “I don’t think it will ever will be.” Hay, who says his latest album Fierce Mercy is his best yet, writes songs on acoustic guitar and fleshes them out until they’re complete. He sings about love, loss, despair and getting older. “The album took a lot out of me,” he says. “There’s a couple of emotional high points for me on this record. It may be only 15 years old, but fast forward to the early 22nd century and this house will probably snare a heritage listing. Such elegant elevation! City glimpses, sunshine, wonderful wide halls and spacious rooms make this a masterpiece that encapsulates Toorak life in a compact footprint. It certainly suited Sir Donald Trescowthick, Swann Insurance founder; longtime Geelong Football Cub No.1 ticketholder and Olympic Games supporter, who with his wife Lady Trescowthick recently downsized and are now selling their home. Designed by Charles Salter, the property commands the first floor of a two-dwelling building in a quiet court off Orrong Road. Close to Toorak Village, it gets top marks for walkability; on a Saturday morning the area is full of fit bods striding out. This residence catches that spirit, with its open-plan living and dining, a lounge and two double bedrooms with en suites offer a beautiful home for couples or a small, schoolaged family keen to minimise the maintenance. You can also minimise the walking; the lift will whisk weary feet from the foyer to first-floor seclusion and to basement parking. The apartment has Victorian ash parquetry, whose golden zigzags point the way to a lounge opening west to a balcony. Dark grey carpet and solid timber bookcases and an entertainment unit make for stylish cosiness. The main living and dining area spans almost 12 metres, creating a superb place for dancing and entertaining. Fulllength windows and sliding doors lead to twin balconies.

Number 47 is a recent build; a family home with a comfortable, contemporary feel. The main bedroom by the entry has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with double vanity. Down the hallway, there’s a living area-meets-home office, thanks to a built-in, walllength desk. The spacious kitchen has a wide kitchen island, and flows to a meals area and lounge.
