““I am Brendan Podger ” … a lost property officer for Metro Trains I’ve been a lost property officer since October
2017, but I started working part-time for the railways in 2006 on the barriers at Flinders Street just before the Commonwealth Games. That was a fun fortnight. The lost property office is attached to Flinders Street Station. When items are handed in at stations around the network, stations report their lost property to my office and I enter everything into a central system. Lost items don’t actually come to my office. Whenever you do a search of lost property for Metro Trains, it comes up with my number, so people can call my office and if something’s been handed in, I can direct them to where it is and they can go and pick it up. Somebody comes into the office at 6.45am and starts entering any lost property that came in overnight. I take over at about 8am or 9am, before going through the list to make sure I’m aware of what’s come in. I answer calls from stations and customers and ensure the databases are updated. As more people travel, we get more lost property calls. In May, 2300 items were handed in. Keeping up with it is one of the job’s biggest challenges. I enjoy connecting with people and being able to connect them with their lost items. When I start in the morning, I scan through what’s come in overnight, and I love it when I know I’ve spoken to a person and I’m going to be able to call them with good news. It’s a bit of a rush, actually. People can be distressed about losing their items, and I assure them that we’ll do our best to find them. A hard part of the job is when we need to tell them we’re unlikely to find something – they might have been calling every day for ages. It’s especially difficult when it’s something precious. I often wonder how certain things get lost. Last year, someone lost a four-foot purple gorilla during Moomba. Another time, a theodolite was handed in. I called the phone number on it multiple times for six months but no one ever claimed it. Sometimes bundles of cash in envelopes are handed in. There’s been everything from power speakers to the top half of an industrial chef’s julienning machine – no one ever called up about that either. How do you lose those things? ●

nternational best-selling author and creator of the 5:2 Diet, Dr. Michael Mosley returns to Australia for a spoken-word tour this month. The British physician and science journalist talks the benefits of fasting, reveals why rapid weight loss is good for you and how the Mediterranean diet can help you live longer. Mosley last visited our shores in 2017 and admits a lot has happened in science since when it comes to understanding the human body. His new book The Fast 800 gives dieters looking towards summer reasons to be cheerful. It promotes rapid weight loss as a good thing and, when done properly, can keep weight off as long as you follow his formula. To make life easier, it includes easy and low-carb recipes written by his wife Dr Clare Bailey and Justine Pattison. “The Fast 800 is based on a lot of human research that’s taken place in Glasgow and Newcastle where rapid weight loss can actually stay off. There’s science to prove that losing it quickly can have health benefits and isn’t as radical as it may sound,” Mosley says. Where the 5:2 Diet promoted eating normally on five days with two days restricting your calories to 500 a day, the improved version limits eaters to 800 calories with more flexibility on the other days. “I wrote the 5:2 Diet back in 2012 – a lot has happened in seven years and science moves on,” Mosley says. “Eight hundred calories seems to be low enough to do all the desirable things you want it to do in your day, and high enough to be able to stick to. “I’ve made that change because that’s where the science has pointed to be most beneficial. Once you reach where you want to be, moving onto the 5:2 and then a Mediterranean diet is something I strongly promote.” Mosley’s own diagnosis with type 2 diabetes in 2012 prompted him to research sugar and fasting, how our body responds to it and the science behind his dieting theories. “I always thought of myself as a bit slim, but when I look back at photographs from that time I wasn’t that slim,” he says. “I had slowly put on more weight and was close to 90 kilos back then. My waistline was too big. “That tipped me into becoming a diabetic like my father and I wanted to find a way to treat diabetes without medication. I lost 10 kilos and kept it off since – sometimes it’s a struggle as there is so much temptation around. I find chocolate hard to resist.” Diabetes Australia says the chronic condition is increasing at a faster rate than other diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 10 per cent of all diabetes while type 2 diabetes accounts for 85 per cent and increasing. Mosley says groundbreaking research is occuring

The science behind staying in shape in Melbourne with Professor Felice Jacka, the director of Deakin University’s Food and Mood Centre, at the forefront of this new revolution. “Dr Jacka has done a lot of research into food, weight and our moods. There’s proof that depression and anxiety is caused by inflammation in the brain and that eating with a Mediterranean diet helps reduce that,” Mosley says. “I am increasingly aware of the microbiome in the gut and its impact on mental and physical health. I touch on it in the book and the cutting edge research is happening in your city.”

“We introduced a sugar tax in the UK, and I imagine Australians must be considering that. We’ve done it with tobacco and it’s now sugar’s time.”
osley, a married father of four who lives in the UK and hosts shows on the BBC, ABC and SBS, says his wife can resist sugary foods more than he can. “Clare happily snatches a sweet out of my hands when she sees it,” he smiles. They avoid processed foods at all costs. “I eat a lot more fermented foods these days from sauerkraut to yoghurt. It’s become a big thing over the past few years and more people are making kombucha and eating kimchi. The science shows this is great for gut health,” he says. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the average life expectancy for Australians is 82 and Mosley says we should make the most of the great forecast ahead. “Australians have a good life expectancy, but what would be good is to live those extra years in good health. You can do that by making some changes to the way you live now,” Mosley says. “The biggest challenge is tackling obesity and our obsession with junk food. Research by Professor Jacka has shown that it is not enough to eat healthily 60 per cent of the time; and that eating junk undoes the good you’ve done. “We introduced a sugar tax in the UK, and I imagine Australians must be considering that. We’ve done it with tobacco and it’s now sugar’s time.” ● MICHAEL MOSLEY: WONDERS OF THE HUMAN BODY \ Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne, September 27. Tickets on sale.

elbourne-based director Daina Reid has scored her first Emmy Award nomination for The Handmaid’s Tale second season episode “Holly”. It’s also the first time she’s directed in the US and finds herself competing against the directors of Game of Thrones and Killing Eve for the top honour. Reid will be in Los Angeles for the awards ceremony on September 22, and will be taking her husband along for the red carpet ride. “I can’t wait,” she says while taking the call for this interview on a train and bus transfer. Rewind a few weeks ago and the Melbournian had no idea she’d been nominated. It was while checking her phone after waking that she saw a text message that read “congratulations”. Reid, who made a name for herself as a director for TV series such as Paper Giants, The Secret Life of Us and Stan series Romper Stomper Stomper, says working in the US has been a great experience. She spent more than four-and-a-half months there, but certainly missed her kids and husband while away. “My family came to visit, but it’s nothing like all waking up in the same house and all eating together,” Reid says. “But when the opportunity to work on an episode came up, I couldn’t say no.” Reid says being nominated is a thrilling career moment. “All those years I spent working on Australian shows and telling those stories certainly put me in a great position when I started on Handmaid’s Tale – I felt confident enough to do that job well,” she says. Reid says working in the US as opposed to Australia is vastly different.

The Melbourne director lauded for her vision of Gilead.
“The budget to do things is the biggest one and we tend to have to get things done really quickly here, [and] in the US there’s still that emphasis but not as much.” Reid’s winning style comes down to understanding the vulnerability of a character. “I always start with a script first and take notice of what it says to me,” she says. “I get that story in my head and go from there. I have always been aware of vulnerability of characters and part of my style is getting into that emotion and find out what is driving them.” Reid, who started out doing comedy on ’90s TV show Full Frontal, says she always wanted to act but chose directing instead. When she got her first gig to direct Blue Heelers
she got a taste for a career she has thoroughly enjoyed ever since. “I never did stand-up comedy, that would be the scariest thing I think, and I admire many colleagues who do that, but for me I found my feet in directing and have loved every opportunity,” she says. A five-time AACTA/AFI award nominee, Reid was also the 2017 recipient of the Australian Director’s Guild’s Michael Carson Award, presented for her overall contribution to Australian TV drama directing. “It’s exciting at this stage of my career to see things take off in the USA and I hope to do more there. I won’t say no to that.” ●

T
V and radio personality Yumi Stynes tackles the topic of getting your period and handling it like a “boss” alongside Dr Melissa Kang. Together they break down the myths, churn through the facts and deliver an easy-to-read guide. Stynes, who is behind the ABC podcast Ladies, We Need to Talk, first met her teen idol Dr Kang (best known as the Dolly Doctor for more than 20 years) when she interviewed her for the series. They struck a friendship and the idea to write a book together seemed like a natural next step. “Melissa works as an associate professor and has this great authority – there’s a real no-nonsense in her approach to science and health information,” Stynes says. “We found a great balance between her knowledge and my ability to ask basic questions to keep the project grounded. “We wanted to cover what a girl goes through, who is either just about to get her period, or had it for a few years but still in the dark about what’s going on.” Dr Kang’s role as Dolly magazine’s resident doctor was to answer all the questions – via mail – that young women were too afraid to ask, from relationships to their bodies. She hit cult status for anyone who bought Dolly in the ’80s and ’90s. “I was so thrilled to meet her on a personal level, a lot of women my age know of her and I immediately felt a sisterhood with her,” Stynes says. Welcome to Your Period! gives tips to young women curious about the changes happening to their body, as well as how dads can tackle the tough topics too without fear of saying the wrong thing.

For a generation of teenage girls, Dolly Doctor was the safe place to get their most personal questions answered. Dr Melissa Kang was a GP at a new Sydney youth service when a colleague, who was writing DD, asked if she wanted to take over. She said yes. ●

AFL For Andy Maher and Emma Race, football is family.
Andy Maher and Emma JOHN DONEGAN 1826
Race with their children Millie, 9, Sophie, 8 and Phoebe, 5.
Front and centre A ndy Maher and Emma Race have built a life and family on a shared love of football. Maher, anchor of Channel 7’s The Front Bar, and wife Race, host and producer of cult footy Bar podcast The Outer Sanctum, have been together 11 years and are raising three footy-head daughters. Fittingly, the Carlton and Hawthorn supporters met in 2008 when their teams played in the final home-and-away round. At the time, Maher hosted Before The Game on Network Ten and Race, who’d worked in radio and TV, was managing comedians. They worked and socialised in the same circles but hadn’t crossed paths. Enter footy serendipity. After being in the same room at the same event three weekends in a row, mutual friend Lehmo (comedian Anthony Lehmann) was out with the Before The Game crew and invited Race for a drink. “Andy and I talked until 3 o’clock in the morning.
Everyone was laughing at us, we were locked in conversation,’’ Race recalls. “It was an absolute whirlwind. We got engaged on Boxing Day, married in May and pregnant on the honeymoon so by the time we got married and were pregnant we hadn’t had a winter or a birthday together.” First, Millie arrived, Sophie 14 months later, then two years on came Phoebe. “It’s a footy love story,’’ Race says. “Football’s a cornerstone of my whole life – my family, my fun, my relationship with my sisters, it’s what I’ve always loved. And I’ve always loved when footy and funny chat intersect, Before The Game was the perfect show to me so I’ve married footy and funny. And Andy’s still carrying that torch through The Front Bar Bar.” The birth of AFLW has been a game-changer, professionally and personally, for the family. Race and her Outer Sanctum teammates kicked
off their award-winning podcast three years ago, championing women in football and talking about the game in a way it was never before discussed. This year, Maher was runner for Carlton’s AFLW team while their kids all play junior footy. When Race first started maternity leave she also started building her skill set. “Andy’s support meant I could take a big chunk of time out to stay at home with the kids which gave me the freedom to create The Outer Sanctum. Before that, I thought I was kind of done with trying to work in the media. I’d been wanting to talk about football but the world wasn’t ready for the way I wanted to talk about it. Then it changed and digital platforms emerged,’’ she says. “I’d created an app and through that did heaps of courses including one in creating podcasts. When the opportunity came up with this group of girls I’d been talking footy with, for what felt like decades, and someone said we should do a podcast I said, ‘Yep, I can do that’ and two days later we had our first episode. “Andy’s the absolute unsung hero of The Outer Sanctum because he’s allowed and enabled me to spend so much time on it. He doesn’t think about football in a vacuum, he thinks about it in an open way and our conversations are always about football and feminism and I know he’s learning a lot from me too.” Maher is in awe of his wife. “Because of the evolution of women’s footy, there’s been this whole other dialogue that’s taken place that Em’s been a part of, and led with her mates, and that’s been an education for me. For her to be able to bring up the kids the way she has and at the same time develop a niche for herself, it’s been a phenomenal achievement.” Race was this year crowned Hawthorn’s No.1 ticket-holder, but it hasn’t swayed Maher from Carlton. After all, he grew up as the navy blue sheep in a brown-and-gold supporting family. Despite talking footy for a living, the couple still chew the fat at home. Grand final week will see Maher host a bumper edition of The Front Bar from The Espy in St Kilda and Race take part in the Essendon Women’s Network’s traditional grand final comedy debate. “Footy’s been there the whole way. We’ve got three kids all playing footy. They love it, they go to the footy, they play footy, they watch footy, their world is full of footy,” Maher says. “It’s in every corner, it’s ever present, it’s part of this house and footy is very, very much part of this family.” ● ● outersanctum.com.au

Creme de la creme
C
reme catalana in Spain or creme brulee in France is a classic dessert otherwise known as burnt cream. The concept is a custard that has just set with a nice crust of burnt-sugar topping. When I see this on a menu, it is definitely something I will order. It’s light and creamy, and I love when the chef pushes the sugar a little darker to take on a slightly bitter taste. Here’s my play on a pandan-infused creme catalana. Pandan (or screwpine leaves) is used a lot in Southeast Asian cooking. It is like what vanilla is to Westerners, with a floral scent reminiscent of hay but also sweet and musky, similar to almond or vanilla. It can be used in soups, infused into a liquid, for colouring, cooking rice and in both sweet and savoury dishes. Sometimes, it is used to wrap meat, seafood and even desserts. ●

Pandan-infused creme catalana Ingredients (Serves 6) 500ml full fat milk 6 pandan leaves, tied into a knot 1 cinnamon stick ∏ tsp vanilla bean paste 7 large egg yolks ∏ cup caster sugar, extra for brulee ∏ tsp cornflour Fresh figs or raspberries (optional), for garnish
■
■
■
Method ■ Place the milk, pandan leaves, cinnamon and vanilla bean paste in a saucepan, then gently bring to the boil. ■ Remove from the heat and allow to infuse for 15 minutes. ■ Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks, sugar and cornflour together until the mixture turns pale and creamy. ■ Pass the infused milk through a sieve and discard
■
everything else. Return the milk to the clean saucepan and place over a medium heat. Just before it reaches boiling point, gradually add the egg mixture, whisking continuously for about 5-7 minutes or until it begins to thicken and coats the back of a wooden spoon. You need to ensure you keep whisking so the egg does not curdle. Remove it from the heat and pour into individual ramekins or traditional clay dishes. Cover each ramekin with a disc of greaseproof paper to prevent a skin from forming, and let it cool before putting it in the fridge. To serve, remove the greaseproof paper, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar on top of each creme catalana and use a blowtorch to caramelise. If you do not own a blowtorch, place the sugared creme catalanas on a tray under a preheated gas grill for a few minutes, until the sugar turns golden brown. Allow the sugar to harden, then serve immediately, garnished with figs or raspberries. ●

The best on show Bertie Beetle bags aside, this year’s Royal Melbourne Show will have respite dining for patient adults.
T
he Royal Melbourne Show brings a little bit of country twang to the city, but the demand to up the ante on food, plus a larger and better-designed show bag pavilion, and more entertainment to keep adults happy gives this year’s event a mighty kick in a new direction. If you’re keen to do things a little differently at the show this year (and keep your kids off the sugar highs even for a moment; go on, I dare you) head to The Meadow; an undercover pavilion which is back for a second
year with a host of Melbourne’s best eateries. You’ll find 400 Gradi, Biggie Smalls and Miso Fresh serving from food trucks while 6Ft6Wines brings its “silver bullet” caravan along. Shane Delia’s Biggie Smalls is serving chicken kebabs and share plates while Miso Fresh delivers on Japanese fusion – think chicken karaage and teriyaki tofu soba salads. For an opportunity to dine tableside, venture to the new Angus Steakhouse. This is where Angus beef celebrates 100 years in Australia.
Think sirloin steaks, Angus burgers and other chargrilled specials that change daily. There’s also a vegetarian and vegan option and a children’s menu. According to the show’s chief executive, Paul Guerra, The Meadow is a perfect chill-out zone for dining in a laidback environment. Kick back in the 140-seater classic pub-style steakhouse in between stints visiting livestock and tasting pavilions. Executive chef and head of food and beverage Neil Rocke says the Angus Steakhouse will sell new cuts and encourage diners to eat and drink well, and chill with the family. “The Steakhouse is definitely a place to sit back and relax in a more grown-up environment,” Rocke says. elebrated Broadway director Bartlett Sher is in awe of Tokyu Theatre Orb – a state-of-theart auditorium built into the Shibuya Hikarie shopping mall in the heart of Tokyo. “I don’t know anywhere in the world where they would have a skyscraper and put in a 2000-seat theatre,” he says, heading to his seat for the opening night of much-loved musical The King and II. The production has arrived in Japan after winning four Tony awards on Broadway, including best revival of a musical, followed by a spectacular run on the West End. Sher is also chuffed that the musical’s two leads, superstars Ken Watanabe and Kellie O’Hara, have travelled with him every step of the way. The entire season at Tokyu Theatre Orb, sung in English with Japanese captions, has sold out. This is a city known for its technology, but its theatrical attractions are a drawcard on par with New York City and London.

Reaching the back row Watanabe, performing in English in his home country for the first time, is a self-confessed perfectionist focused on connecting with the Japanese audiences who are perhaps more familiar with his Hollywood outings such as Memoirs of a Geisha and Godzilla. He reveals that after each performance, he tweaks the Japanese subtitles to ensure maximum resonance, understanding and relatability.
The writer travelled to Tokyo as a guest of Trafalgar Entertainment.

And while the Tokyo Theatre Orb is also planning to host musicals such as Singing in the Rain and The Bodyguard, it’s at the historic Kabuki-za Theatre in the city’s Ginza area you find traditional Kabuki performances. It is a joy to witness the artists in their exquisite costumes, presenting the tales-of-old in the expansive venue. There’s dance, aerial stunts, impressive staging and a great deal of drama. If you don’t want to sit through an entire show (average length about four hours), there are tickets to single acts that run about an hour. And for those who miss out on a seat, there’s also standing room only tickets for about $15.

Bartlett Sher is astounded by the work ethic of the Japanese theatrical crew and the exquisite meals have thrilled him. But, he seems most impressed with his workplace, a bar on the 14th floor looking onto the hectic Shibuya Crossing. “We’re sitting here looking down on the Times Square of Japan and we’re in the lobby of a beautiful theatre.” ●

The ‘why’ chromosome How to sustain exercise motivation through life’s ebb and flow.
S
omething that people often don’t understand and really struggle with on their quest to get into shape is that motivation is temporary. At the beginning of a new regime, motivation and adherence is high and we are feeling good. This very seldom lasts. To ensure that when motivation fluctuates your workouts and healthy eating don’t, you need to go deeper. It’s not just about setting a goal. It’s about uncovering your why. Why is getting in shape so important to you? Why is being healthy so important to you? Why are you going to get up and move your body, even if it’s dark, it’s cold and you don’t feel like it? Let me explain: Your why cannot be wrong

because it is yours. Your why will be different from my why. In fact, your why may change as you do. I know this from personal experience. In my early 20s, my why was all about vanity. It was all about a six-pack and biceps. Now, at nearly 40, I look back and I’m almost a little embarrassed about that because today it is so different. Now, it is about moving my body because I know it makes me feel better. It is about practising what I preach with my job and most importantly it is about being a good role model to my children. Because my why is so clear and so strong, I am consistent and healthy all year round. I am not training for an event, I have a strong ‘why’ and I am

training for life. The challenge for you is to discover your own why. This must come from within. It cannot be what your friends are doing or what your partner is doing. It will not work if it isn’t 100 per cent specific and undisputedly important to you. The reason this is so important is your why gives your goals power and direction, and your actions a deeper purpose. Don’t just think it – own it. Be sure it is right for you, write it down in big bold letters and put it somewhere that you see regularly because it is when we start to forget our why or our why begins to fade that we start to lose track. If we constantly remind ourselves why we started, we are far more likely to finish the job. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

Learning to shape the world
LEIGH HENNINGHAM
T
he childhood home of St Madeleine Sophie Barat is nestled in the vineyards and hills of Joigny, a small town outside Paris. The house where the foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart grew up is a popular pilgrimage site for students, teachers and alumni of Sacre Coeur. “Her home is now a retreat and many of our girls have visited. They see the room where St Madeleine Sophie was born and learn about her childhood,” says Janine Hogan, head of junior school at the independent Catholic school for girls in Glen Iris. “I visited last year and as I leafed through the visitor’s book, I saw familiar names from our school. It is a very special place.” Sacre Coeur’s junior school is named Joigny and it’s a place where St Madeleine Sophie’s vision is very much alive. “The mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart was to educate young women so they could be empowered to shape their world. It was quite radical then,” says principal Anna Masters. Hogan says: “Early years of education are pivotal and doing that well means knowing each child and their individual needs and letting them challenge themselves. We want to educate girls so they can move beyond the school gates and be active participants in the world. They do that by learning their strengths and dealing with challenges, and that journey begins in their junior school years.” There are around 180 prep to year six students. “Our junior school is small by design, so girls get to know each other and their teachers. It’s quite intimate,” says Hogan. “There is great capacity to know the students thoroughly and to have a team of people who can support students with personalised learning programs. “At the same time, the girls have opportunities to connect with the older girls and to see the potential of what is to come for them.” Sacre Coeur offers a broad curriculum. Apart from the fundamentals of literacy and numeracy, junior girls study subjects including music, French, PE and visual arts, and there is a compulsory strings program in year 2. A wellness program is also a core part of the curriculum and covers everything from cyber safety

and healthy eating to mindfulness, self-reflection and how to regulate emotions. Extra-curricular opportunities see girls become part of the Garden Gang, join a robotics club or be part of the Huff and Puff exercise program. Year 6 sees all girls complete a leadership program and take on a leadership role in committees in areas such as sustainability, public speaking and arts. “They learn that leadership is about working with other people collaboratively and supporting each other, it’s not a person standing up front with a badge,” says Hogan. Masters says: “Our school environment provides girls with a real sense of belonging and of being valued. They establish their sense of capacity and their ability to embrace mistakes because they know
the people around them. That sense of self, sense of confidence and trust in taking responsible risks must happen for girls to stretch themselves.” Summing up the spirit of Sacre Coeur, Masters says the sense of pride and community is palpable. “Our parents say there is simply a feeling here that is hard to describe,” she says. “From the earliest years there is an authenticity about the students here. They are comfortable in their own skin. “They seek out learning opportunities and recognise their strengths and how to apply them to learn as much as they can. They embrace challenges that build character and empathy and they’re willing to work hard to excel.” ● SARAH MARINOS

If this house were a rose it would be a rambler, sprawling high and low and peeping over fences into the Maling Road shops around the corner. Built in 1900 on a quarter-acre, the winsome weatherboard became secretly sprawly in 2008 when it gained new living, dining and rumpus rooms, a stone kitchen, zoned bedrooms and a dine-out terrace by the pool and garden, all nestled in a two-storey extension behind the original single level. A hidden highlight is the north-facing courtyard, fringed with blossoming trees in spring. It was a mighty renovation by the owners, who have lived here 25 years. “Our home has been very malleable as our family has grown,” these heritage-lovers say. “Being close to Maling Road and the station is wonderful; we feel we’re in the heart of the community.” Four living rooms, including a library, offer rare choice for entertaining or just musing. As well as being rich in beauty, the house works superbly on a practical level. Every detail a busy family could wish for is here, from the mudroom to the laundry chute. Discreet technology includes an office nook, ethernet cabling, surround sound in the rumpus room and automated blinds. The Baltic pine central hall opens to four original rooms with high, corniced ceilings and tiled open fireplaces. The box-bay main bedroom, in red brocade curtains, has a walkin wardrobe and an updated en suite. Across the hall, the library has bookcases. Bevelled-glass doors lead to bedroom two and to the north-facing, chandelier-lit living room. A staircase marks the hall’s end. Go up to three sunny

(The pool is fenced off from the garden.) Kids will enjoy the rumpus – but the under-house workshop, dark and sprawly, might hold unexpected thrills. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au Agent: RT Edgar, Nick Walker 0417 330 650 Price: $2.96 million-$3.25 million Auction: 2.30pm, September 21

If Shakespeare were in Melbourne, this might be the house he’d write a sonnet to – an elevated, Tudor-style manor, magnificent in clinker brick, with quiet rooms for writing and two enormous living and dining areas for feasts and entertainment. Built in 1937, it’s an arts and crafts masterpiece. The polished timber doors and staircase give visual warmth to the interior, where a curvaceous, bricktapestry open fireplace presides over the formal living room. The hardwood-floored family area, added in 2004, opens east to the terrace, lawn and Tudor-style cubby.
