The word “athleisure” was added this year to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. It seems the decade-long debate over a most misunderstood garment – leggings, whether they qualified as pants and should be worn in public – has been put to rest. Leggings for the win, helped along by the general casualisation of fashion and brands like P.E Nation conquering this category (with wellcut fabric and a suction quality to give you a silhouette like Kim Kardashian on an airbrushed day). Designer Pip Edwards is the queen of gym-meets-the-street. Meet her in this week’s cover story. ●

AMFF (Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival) has more than 70 events and goes from March 4 to 14. How to pick out the best? Here are some standouts.
NATIONAL GRADUATE SHOWCASE \ Sure,
newcomers to the fashion festival want to see the big names on the runway. But, often, the show with the most frisson is the one that features graduate students from across Australia. These kids aren’t usually trying to make collections that can be worn straight off the runway; they want to get noticed. Sometimes the results are spectacular, sometimes puzzling, but the fun is not knowing what to expect. Friday, March 13, 6pm. Tickets from $39.
Comedian Celeste Barber’s Instagram has been poking fun at magazine and model poses for ages (to the delight of the people she pokes fun at), but it was her bushfire relief fundraiser that really catapulted her to celebrity status. She’s already walked international runways – Tom Ford used her in 2019 for New York Fashion Week – but there are other reasons to attend. Featured designers are Aje, Ginger & Smart, Jason Grech, Manning Cartell, Viktoria + Woods, Rebecca Vallance, Rachel Gilbert, SIR and Matin. Front row tickets available. Thursday, March 12, 7pm. Tickets from $59. AUSTRALIAN FASHION SUMMIT \ If you want to do more than simply see Barber on the runway – where she will no doubt have crowds in stitches – hear her insights during the conversation, “Who Really Has Influence Today?” Also in the line-up is Australian editor-in-chief Laura Brown of US InStyle magazine. Bonus: $50 from each ticket goes towards the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. Friday, March 13, from 9am-5.30pm, $499. HOW TWO LIVE \ You might have been following lookalike fashion sisters Jess and Stef Dadon on their Instagram page. But this pair is more about influencing; they’re also fashion entrepreneurs (with their own shoe label, Twoobs) and have a podcast for which they’ve interviewed Meg Ryan, Dita Von Teese and Erin Brockovich. At VAMFF, they will live-record their podcast with a free discussion at The Plaza with industry identities. Wednesday, March 11; Thursday, March 12, 6pm.

aficionado hasn’t swooned over the frothy concoctions that Toni Maticevski always delivers? This year’s Virgin Australia Grand Showcase features a solo show by the red carpet master, which will include his current designs as well as some of his archival pieces, that will explain to the novice why he has held such an exalted place in Australian fashion for the past two decades. Plus there’s a goodie bag, with $100 in Priceline gifts. Thursday, March 12, 8.30pm. Tickets from $59. NOCTURNAL X FASHION \ Night owl? Check. The
festival’s after-dark party at the Melbourne Museum combines culture (Mojo Juju in a DJ set) and Chunky Move dance company wearing Romance Was Born threads, among other big names in the line-up: Banoffee, Rainbow Chan, Purple Sneakers
and more. There are pop-up bars, fashion films and live music. The beats go on until 11pm. Friday, March 6, 7pm. Tickets from $25, this is an over-18s event. HUGS BY HEIDE X PATRICIA PICCININI X ALPHA60 \ Wanna eavesdrop on a conversation between renowned artist Patricia Piccinini (as part of a showcased exhibition) and the duo behind quirky label Alpha60, Georgie and Alex Cleary? Even better, it’s at Heide Museum of Modern Art at twilight, as part of VAMFF’s independent program. Expect the talk to centre on the two themes of nurture and nature that are embedded in Piccinini’s artworks: conversation, wine and museum admission included. ● Sunday, March 8, 5.30-7.30pm, tickets from $30.

f you thought athleisure wear hit fever pitch back in 2016, you can thank fashion designers Claire Tregoning and Pip Edwards (opposite) for keeping the momentum going. Together they run the successful empire P.E Nation – a brand whose DNA is as sun-kissed as the beaches you’ll find them on in their downtime. Now they’re the first Australian brand to collaborate with Swedish retailer H&M to take their sporty vision to the world. Known for their colour blocking, logo straps and chic active wear, the P.E Nation X H&M collection will be available globally from the end of February. The limited edition range comes at an affordable price and will no doubt woo their fitness loving army keen to add to their memorabilia. The new range is less about logo sharing with the Swedes and more about showing the globe how Aussies handle their active wear. But more than capturing a few gym looks fit enough for a streetwear strut, the collaboration will have a fashion component, too. Think skirts and jackets, undergarments, swimwear. And where would we be without a ’90s revival bumbag? Edwards remembers checking her emails last year and thinking she’d been pranked. “I thought it was a joke when I read the email,” she recalls of the offer to collaborate. “Then Claire and I jumped on the phone to H&M and they had 12 people on loud speaker with us. Before we knew it, the deal was done.” H&M spotted the brand via York stockist Bandier, and the rest of their success is due to the organic cotton and recycled polyester they use, taking a fitspo look from Instagram posts to the streets. It probably helped that Kim Kardashian has worn the brand and given it the thumbs up. “We designed the entire collection based on our best sellers; it’s more like a retrospective,” Edwards says of what to expect. “H&M provided us with a colour palette and we used our P.E Nation DNA,” she adds, hinting there’s plenty of pink and tan colour-ways. The friends jetted off to Sweden and China to work with the retail giant, taking in the excitement of the lucrative deal. They’re in the company of Alexander Wang and Stella
McCartney who have also collaborated with H&M, but they’re the first designers in the brand’s history to be photographed in the campaign too. “We’re the first active wear collaboration they have ever done and one of the first Aussie designers they have ever picked,” an excited Edwards says. “You work hard to get your brand out there in various markets and eventually it all falls into place. The retailer had been following us keenly and really understood our mentality. We’re a fashion active wear brand that creates performance wear that’s street credible and comfortable.” Edwards, who got her start as a fashion designer at sass & bide, Ksubi and as design director at General Pants Co, has found her creative niche with P.E Nation. She’s avidly on social media and doesn’t shy from that spotlight.
“All we wanted to do was find women with whom the brand would resonate ... It’s grown larger than we could ever imagine.” PIP EDWARDS
With more than 159,000 following her every movement on Instagram, Edwards is the perfect pin-up for her brand – a Pilates-loving beach babe who is as much at home in a new snow collection in Europe skiing as she is conditioning her tanned abs in a Pilates class. The 40-year-old mother of one (son Justice, aged nine, with former partner Dan Single who started Ksubi) says working with her best friend Tregoning works perfectly for the ambitious duo. They’ve taken part in Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Sydney, showcased at Pitti Uomo in Florence and took part in the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival last year. Now they’ve got their eye on a new snow collection for winter. “When we started out, all we wanted to do was find women with whom the brand would resonate,” Edwards says. “It’s grown larger than we could ever imagine.” Edwards doesn’t chase trends – she sets them – and the brand’s meteoric rise is proof enough the duo has the vision to take it the next level.

“We want the world to know about us,” Edwards says. “And if you thought athleisure wear was on the way out, you’re wrong. The demand is stronger than ever. “I feel it’s really a great time for our brand to shine and this opportunity to be on a world stage and be recognised globally is a huge step for us. It’s amazing for us to have this sort of global footprint.” The activewear-meets-fashion philosophy might sound like an easy coming together, but it’s the way the P.E Nation duo have made their mark that puts them in a league of their own. “We have a definite personality; a P.E Nation girl is confident and has a lot of fun,” Edwards says. “Claire and I love our fitness, health and fashion and it’s our love for these things that comes through the brand. That’s what keeps us going.” ● ● pe-nation.com ● hm.com/au

Meet Christian Kimber: the British-born menswear designer defining modern Australian style. Wo r d s

hristian Kimber may not be a name you’re very familiar with but he’s quietly been making tracks in the Australian menswear fashion space, going from strength to strength – or garment to garment – as he establishes what is fast becoming one of the country’s best boutique menswear labels. Hailing from East Sussex in the United Kingdom, the 31-year old – based in Melbourne – has immersed himself in menswear for as long as he can remember, learning from fashion courses, internships and workshops at a variety of haberdashers across London. “My background in menswear fashion is quite interesting. I have done a pattern-making course, worked in shoe design, illustration workshops, fashion PR internships, worked as a buyer and stylist – I just wanted to learn as much as I could about the industry,” Kimber says. “My journey in fashion has also been about discovering who I am as an individual. I wasn’t sure where I [fitted] in after finishing school, and although I loved men’s clothing and wanted to design, I didn’t necessarily know what skills I had to do so.” Kimber worked in and around Savile Row, London’s home of bespoke tailoring, learning the delicate art of classical men’s tailoring, as well as working for a notable shoemaker where he developed a natural affinity for the craft – the catalyst for the first Christian Kimber product. “I absolutely love shoe design because it is just so technical. The journey of making a pair of shoes from scratch is truly beautiful,” he says. It wasn’t until 2012 that he decided to take the plunge and move to Australia, where he quickly felt that the menswear scene lacked character and soul. “I started my business in 2013 after living in Australia for a year. I saw a gap in the market between casual and formal menswear and, really, I just wanted to create garments that could be worn to work or on the weekend,” Kimber says. “Shoe design was also going through a moment that saw a lot of people with the same idea: design a medium price casual shoe which had a great design.” Fast forward to 2015, when Kimber officially
The time is now launched his first line of smart-casual footwear. “I started off designing chukka boots, tassel loafers and sneakers because I wanted these three styles but couldn’t afford to buy them. So, I just made them. This whole business has been about what I have wanted to wear at the time,” Kimber says. “The Australian lifestyle is quite relaxed so sneakers, in particular, resonated really well with my customers. I have always loved sneakers and the casualness of them, but it doesn’t mean they have to be made poorly.” From its inception, Christian Kimber quickly built a loyal following. Sneakers would sell out soon after launching, and custom-made accessories such as city-based pocket chiefs were seen all around town. Menswear is now on the agenda; Kimber was
the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival National Designer Award winner last year. “As a brand, I want to reach out to guys who might not know about menswear but just want to look and feel good about themselves,” Kimber says. “My overarching goal since the beginning has been to work towards this concept of redefining Australian style and what that means. “What I’m trying to stand for, and develop, is clothing that is lifestyle-focused but can still be elegant, and I think it’s never been a cooler time in menswear because you can wear anything and everything.” ● CHRISTIAN KIMBER \ 264 Johnston Street, Fitzroy ● christiankimber.com

one are the days of chefs hiding behind closed doors. Anything other than an open kitchen is suspicious (what are they doing back there, anyway? Is it clean? Internal walls are so ’90s). It’s not a problem for Stephen Nairn at Omnia, who, despite having a gorgeous marble and emerald green-tiled open kitchen, appears omnipresent on the floor. He’s so sociable with each table that my mother comments, “It’s a wonder the food comes out at all.” Hospitality needs more Stephen Nairns. orders that don’t belong in his “section”. Perhaps it works because of the practice run at the Toorak Road pop-up before settling into luxury South Yarra development Capitol Grand. Maybe it’s the solidarity of the team, with general manager Kevin McSteen freely sharing the moment he fell in love with dining out as a child, and pastry chef John Demetrios churning out liquid centre cheesecakes with berry sorbet (though if you enjoy the earthy, medicinal flavour of marzipan, the blooming apricot and almond croustade is good, too). The price point clocks in at “fancy”, but service and food are far from stuffy. David Bromley paintings and bronze sculptures are placed throughout. Chicken liver parfait with ruby port glaze comes with the surprise addition of shiny milk buns that had me moments away from imitating @breadfaceblog (Google it). When we visit, a bicolour capsicum tart, the red and green varieties divided down the centre like an iconic black-and-white cookie, has just been added to the menu. Its short-crust pastry crumbles, its Gruyere custard oozes, and I hope it never gets benched. I’ve tried the steak with sauce bordelaise at Omnia. I’ve eaten buttery goat’s curd agnolotti and Melbourne’s prettiest ratatouille. So far, so good, but nothing compares to the duck for two. Nairn presents our plump waterfowl, sourced from Milla’s Farm in Mount Macedon and dry-aged for 14 days, before whipping it away. When it returns, the breasts have been roasted in honey and ladled with rich duck jus, while the legs have been removed, confit and scattered with coarse salt flakes.
It’s scandalously decadent and enough for three to share with starters. We refuse all offers to clear the plate until we get through most of it. When chocolate petit fours arrive, I ask for them to take away – we’re stuffed. A waitress returns with a piece of Omnia-branded greaseproof paper, origami’d by Nairn into a little baggy. Duck me, he’s good. ●

espite Melbourne’s love of bars and festivals, there’s never been a cocktail festival in our city. That sorry state of affairs is changing this month with the launch of the inaugural Melbourne Cocktail Festival. But why didn’t we have one already? That’s the question that spurred Orlando Marzo into action. Marzo, an Italian-born, Melbournebased bartender, took out the World Class Global Bartender of the Year award in 2018 and as part of his post-award “victory lap” attended multiple cocktail festivals and competitions across the world. “It was great to see people coming out to these events and going to classes and I thought to myself, I can’t believe we don’t have this in Melbourne,” he says. “Melbourne’s cocktail scene is very good and has a really strong reputation in the rest of the

world, so I thought we should have this kind of celebration that puts a spotlight on Melbourne and our drinks industry.” Marzo has curated the inaugural Melbourne Cocktail Festival in collaboration with Worksmith, the co-working space and hospitality hub group where he works as beverage director. The idea was for “five days of celebration for people at all levels of expertise”, with the happiest news being that most of the events involve serious cocktail imbibing. Those after insight into the state of the industry, the current trends in bars, cocktails and distilling and what the future holds for the cocktail scene should hotfoot it to Collingwood’s The Craft & Co where the MCF Symposium kicks off the festival. few minutes from Fresko Yoghurt Bar for a Greek yoghurt break with spoon sweets (chunky jams with whole fruit). The Temple of Olympian Zeus is across the road; otherwise make your way to lunch through Anafiotika, a scenic neighbourhood on the northeastern side of the Acropolis hill with the kind of narrow walkways and charming houses usually associated with Greek islands. Your destination is Athens Central Market to eat at one of two no-frills tavernas: Epirus Tavern in the meat section where workers slurp soups or Diporto around the corner. Rejuvenate with a drink at leafy outdoor bar six d.o.g.s. Avoid the touristy main squares at dinnertime and head to Ouzeri Lesvos to sip ouzo and eat seafood beside locals. You might still have time to catch a flick at outdoor cinema Cine Paris, overlooking the Acropolis (open May to October). Arrive early to secure a good seat. ●
with a much-photographed seaside mosque. For lunch, try mayirefta (meals cooked fresh that morning). Kouzina E.P.E. is a bright and modern version, but for old-school eats try Patsas Agnos Marmaritzakis in the Municipal Market of Chania. Order dakos, a Cretan specialty of barley rusk piled with chopped tomato and local mizithra cheese at To Steno and have Cretan fried snails at Chrisostomos. Thalassino Ageri serves seafood right on the water to a backdrop of old tanneries, while meat lovers should make a beeline for To Antikristo, where proteins are skewered and cooked over fire. Rent a car to explore a different beach each day: Elafonisi Lagoon is the pick for families with a short walk from the car park, toilets and glassy aquamarine water; Balos Beach is separated from Balos Lagoon by a strip of pinktinged white sand and Seitan Limania Beach is only 30 minutes from central Chania. ●

A fortnight … add Milos
You really need two weeks in Crete, but five or six days in Chania is a good amount of time to explore the western side of the largest Greek island. The seaside town is set on the Old Venetian Harbour

the hill has views back down to town and across the ocean, characterised by windmills, the nearby Ancient Theatre and catacombs. Below it is the fishing village of Klima – most people come to seafood restaurant Astakas for dinner and a stroll, but if you have transport stay in one of the converted fishermen’s houses. On Milos’ northeastern tip is Pollonia, with more luxury, boutique accommodation. With the exception of Sarakiniko, where smooth volcanic rocks give the appearance of a moonscape, the most interesting beaches are on the southern coast. Paleochori is heated by sulphur springs, Firiplaka Bay is set against volcanic cliffs and neighbouring Tsigrado is reached by a rickety rope and ladder. Explore Plaka – the picturesque main town with jewellery shops, bars and cafes – at sunset. Buy a cocktail from Verina and sit on the wall at the adjacent church for an unbeatable view. ● NOTES FROM THE ROAD Travel tip: Be aware that Greek ferries are often cancelled due to weather conditions, so allow plenty of time if you have an international flight.

8/2 LANSELL COURT
2
Toorak’s titans love Lansell Road for many reasons, but one is quite practical: between this handsome boulevard and Melbourne Airport, there are just two sets of traffic lights. Ahh, that swift, unhindered ride home to peace and privacy. Developer Peter Gibson clearly had this in mind when he built Villa Lansell, a magnificent block of eight dwellings in a pretty court, in 2000. This penthouse seems like a French pied-a-terre in the sky. Spacious and gracious in the classic Toorak style of cream carpet and polished parquetry, it evokes the grand salons of Paris in the belle epoque. The owner is, in fact, an artist – but she’s definitely Australian, with the art collection to prove it. Her choices are displayed to stunning effect in the huge living and dining area, which opens to a north-facing terrace, and in the wide hall, where a lightwell provides natural light and breeze. The granite kitchen, oak-panelled study or lounge, marble bathrooms and three zoned bedrooms offer family-sized accommodation in a timeless (and easily updatable) style. Enter via a secure marble foyer with lifts. The top-floor landing, shared with the second penthouse, has an amusing sculpture made from industrial scales. Follow the parquet hall to the open-plan living and dining area, carpeted and with taffeta-clad french doors to the terrace. On the west side, a metal grille with a leadlight peacock creates a Juliet balcony. Bifold doors lead to the study, which has solid oak bookcases and a working open fireplace. Chefs will enjoy the country-style kitchen, where chunky brown granite tops the solid-oak cabinetry. The Smeg gas
