“These really are little miracles.” Melbourne Zoo director Michelle Bruggeman, the subject of this week’s cover feature, is referring to the birth of the zoo’s grassland earless dragons, but she could also be talking about the moments that families have experienced together at every visit over its 158-year history. It’s not just children’s eyes that light up when a butterfly comes to rest on their head, or they see an elephant getting its teeth brushed. Adults will more than ever come to appreciate the rejuvenating qualities of a walk through Melbourne Zoo, where conservation and reflection meet. ●

icture cruising down the highway on a Sunday afternoon and taking in the mountainous landscape of the Grampians. Leaving from Melbourne, the first stop in this region – a bit more than a two-hour drive north-west of the CBD – has to be wine country. Montara Wines in Ararat has gorgeous views, a very friendly cellar-door team and scrumptious platters to nibble on while you taste the vino. This would also be a beaut spot for a sundowner before heading to your accommodation. Such vast landscape and paintingesque views can get distracting but the BMW 3 Series 330i has got you covered. With the steering and lane control assistant, your journey will be all smooth sailing.

The Grampians has so much on offer that it’s at least a two-night stay for those wanting to soak it all up. Aquila Eco Lodges, in Dunkeld, is supremely located for both adventure lovers and foodies. You can really check out and switch off here. Each lodge feels secluded and peaceful plus you can feel the Australiana vibes with Skippy and his little mates hopping around the grounds. Breakfast is dropped off by the lovely owners each morning, and there are walking trails on the property for those looking to fully immerse themselves in nature. Even the laziest of us can enjoy the Grampians. Halls Gap is the central hub of the region and offers great places to eat and stay, on top of the natural beauty of its surroundings.
Before taking the 20-minute drive to breathtaking Reeds Lookout, pop into Harvest Cafe and grab a latte. From the lookout it is another 10 minutes to Mackenzie Falls. There is a wheelchair-accessible path to take in the view at the Bluff platform. Then head to Pomonal Estate winery for lunch – the share platter is a must, and be sure to try a takeaway squealer (a 950-millilitre bottle) of their house-made ginger beer. Back at the Eco Lodges is the award-winning Royal Mail Hotel by executive chef Robin Wickens, offering fine dining at Wickens and more casual eating at Parker Street Project. You cannot leave the Grampians without splashing out on a meal here – you will not regret it. ●

COVER STORY
A
t the height of the COVID-19-related lockdown, Melbourne Zoo’s director Michelle Bruggeman received an email that sent her spirits soaring. It was a screenshot taken by doctors at the neighbouring Royal Children’s Hospital showing some of their sickest kids with watermelon-wide smiles, beaming with delight watching Animals at Home, a unique online program the zoo created in response to the pandemic. From the comfort of their beds, the littlies were able to take a peek inside an otter’s den, soar across the tree tops while feeding giraffes and witness the newborn fluffy snow leopard cubs taking their first public steps. “That email was such a highlight for me,” Bruggeman enthuses. “They said it was a fantastic distraction for the kids which made me so proud, because it was everything we’d worked for.” Like the rest of Victoria, the pandemic put the much-loved zoo into lockdown too, closing its gates to the public for the first time in its 158 years. But, behind the scenes it was busier than ever. With 3400 animals to care for, it was essential that the team of 100 keepers and staff maintained their daily routines, albeit in COVID-19-safe logistical team bubbles. In addition, the zoo’s catering contractor transformed its kitchens into a quarantine catering facility, preparing 500 meals every day for nursing homes and aged-care facilities in crisis. The only thing missing from the regular hum and buzz was the adoring public who’ve flooded through the zoo’s gates every day since it was first opened in 1862. In an effort to maintain their community connection, the zoo’s staff created Animals at Home and began streaming the daily lives of the animals. It was an instant hit.

TALKING TO THE ANIMALS
Melbourne Zoo is open again and director Michelle Bruggeman says visitors will feel closer than ever to its natural wonders.
major changes over the past decade, transforming from what were once tourist-focused attractions to become cutting-edge centres of conservation, science and preservation where the four-legged and furry guests firmly come first. Melbourne Zoo is taking the lead. “We’ve successfully bred 16 grassland earless dragons last year,” she says. “The species was considered extinct in Victoria. Another nine hatched over the past few weeks. That’s the first time that’s happened in zoos for over 50 years. These really are little miracles.” The zoo is taking a lead role in rebuilding habitat for a variety of frogs affected by the bushfires. “Some people have a very archaic view of what zoos are, they see exhibits and ask if it’s right for animals, but what we are doing is protecting animals and fighting extinction – that’s our key role, it’s the core of our work and it’s what drives everything we do.
More than 1.5 million of us relished the rare chance to take a fly-on-the-wall look inside one of our most treasured institutions. “We wanted people to still enjoy the experience of visiting the zoo but from the safety of home,” Bruggeman says. “We know how vital the zoo is to community wellbeing, so we resolved that if people can’t come to the zoo, we’d find a way to bring the zoo to you. “All of those regular day-to-day jobs the public don’t normally see, like taking blood from tigers and weighing birds or teaching elephants how to stay still during an ultrasound, feeding seals, we were able to share online and the response was amazing. It gave everyone a new appreciation of just how skilled our staff are and how much goes on here behind the scenes, but also just how loved the zoo is.” It’s been just over 18 months since Bruggeman was appointed to the coveted position of director of the zoo, a role unlike any other executive job.
“ ... We know that reconnecting with nature and reconnecting with animals can have a huge benefit to our mental health.” Along with the task of transforming the ageing but much-loved institution, the mother of three has inherited an eclectic bunch of new workmates including a giant tortoise named Wilbur, who is believed to be more than 100 years old and something of a phenomenon at the zoo, and the adorable meerkats, whose enclosure is just outside her office. Their bobbing antics endlessly entertain staff and passers-by. The former YMCA executive who spent 20 years building a stellar career has been on a steep learning curve since she arrived, but now happily reels off information about ruffed lemurs and leopards and can wax lyrical about taxonomy and the challenges of mapping extinct species. She says zoos around the world have undergone
MICHELLE BRUGGEMAN, MELBOURNE ZOO
“The philosophy of a modern zoo is centred around conservation and that’s the message we want to get out to the public, we have a critical role to play educating people. “When a visitor comes to the zoo, we want them to connect with a species and understand why conservation is so important and what they can do about it at home, at grassroots levels such as reducing their use of plastics and palm oil.” The zoo’s Twilight program – back in 2022 – is the perfect example of how entertainment and education work hand-in-hand. It delivers more than $1 million into species protection every year. Bruggeman and her team have also been working on deepening the connection of the zoo as a place of wellbeing for the community and see the zoo

playing a vital role in the community’s postCOVID-19 recovery. “I think the zoo as a place of wellness is the heartbeat of what we are and what we do. People come to see and connect with the animals, but there’s as much in the way of beautiful gardens that you can immerse yourself in too,” she says. “It feels like you are going for a walk in the bush for an hour, you are completely away from the stresses of life and yet still in the middle of the city. “People feel better after being here, we know that, and after the year we’ve experienced, we know that reconnecting with nature and reconnecting with animals can have a huge benefit to our mental health. It is such a loved part of Melbourne and a vitally important place of recovery and resilience.” When news of the zoo’s reopening was announced, tickets were snapped up in minutes and on the first day zoo-lovers queued up waiting to get in, some with tears streaming down their cheeks as they flowed through the gates. The enthusiasm was matched by the animals, who were delighted to be welcoming back their human friends, too. “If you think about it, prior to this we’d only been closed for one morning in 158 years, so the animals are very used to having people around. Some of our species such as the orangutans and gorillas love human company, so the staff made a special point of extra visits to their enclosures during the lockdown, the giraffes and zebras, too. Needless to say, everyone is excited to be welcoming people back.” Over summer, the zoo will run a special Open Late program where patrons can enter the zoo from 4pm and experience the zoo in twilight to cater to the demand of the community wanting to reconnect. “It’s a great time of day to be in the zoo, the animals really come to life at sunset – they are animated, excited and it’s just a beautiful atmosphere to be here. We still have so much to learn from the animals. Every day I learn something new.” ● ● zoo.org.au

These make a lot of scents M elbourne-based founders and the creative directors of Mihan Aromatics Jules Brown and Joshua Mihan have built a cult following for their niche perfumes – a range that evokes nostalgia and good times. From their best-selling Sienna Brume (think poolside in the summer) to scents of the Australian bush (Mikado Bark) and rain and wood (Petrichor Plains), Mihan Aromatics taps into the local landscape while taking its wearer on a trip down memory lane. Mihan has introduced a new fragrance for summer. The untitled parfum was created in Melbourne’s lockdown, and it about Australia’s

surf culture of the 1970s. “It’s designed to remind people of those ’70s Holden Sandman vans, the neoprene fabric, surfboards and maybe even some sexy time in the bushes,” Brown says. “It’s an abstract parfum, a moment to reminisce about hitting the beach and unwinding by the sand. It was what we all craved during the year.” The duo likes to work with native flora – including Kakadu plum seed – as well as overseas ingredients like Calabrian bergamot, to keep the scents diverse. All parfums are 25 per cent perfume concentrate and also include Australian sugarcane. They’re cruelty-free and vegan. “We’ve found a lot of people have been craving clarity and calmness in their parfum choices during this time, so a chance to rejuvenate a memory with our range or celebrate one is the reason we’re expanding the collection,” Brown says. Mihan offers a set of six parfums, including the untitled one, in threemillilitre vials for chic minimalism and sampling. French-trained and Melbournebased botanical perfumer Nicole Thomas runs Essensorie, which has a boutique in the city’s Block Arcade. She takes inspiration from her French heritage, a love of Australian landscape and an organic philosophy. “My family owned plant nurseries so when I was a kid I didn’t have dolls, I had a cactus hothouse and I did all the herbs,” Thomas says. “I gained my strong sensibility with the scent of nature in that formative time and while I worked in graphic design and branding over the years, and marketing for Australian Conservation Foundation, I had to follow my nose and learn perfumery.” Thomas, who has a house in the south of France and in regional Victoria, has spent time visiting distilleries and volunteering on flower farms to learn more about scent. She started a French perfume house Castille de Fleur but has since morphed her business into the sensory dispensary, Essensorie.
“I use the same techniques as a French perfumer would when creating a fragrance – there is always a base note, a heart note and a building of chords,” Thomas says. Essensorie’s Lavender Grapefruit fragrance is the most popular, as well as those with citrus and herbs. “People love anything green and fruity, I always try to use Australian wherever I can like tea tree and eucalyptus as well as lavender from Australia, but I am also looking to Japan for honeysuckle, uzu and hinoki wood.”
KLEINS
Andrea Birnie, of Kleins Perfumery, will unveil 12 new fragrances in 2021 – a project she was working on during lockdown. Birnie opened Australia’s very first perfumeries on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy more than 25 years ago, and now operates in a wholesale and online format. Her new scents will come in a 10-millilitre oil range with Middle Eastern notes including Peru balsam, incense, Oud and frankincense. “I buy from France and the Middle East but all our perfumes are created in Australia,” Birnie says. “Coming back into fashion are all the granny florals; think sweet peas, tea roses, gardenia and a few citruses.” ● ● mihanaromatics.com ● essensorie.com ● kleinsperfumery.com.au

A concierge service seems such an extravagance – until you really need it. When the owner of this lustrous apartment moved into Hawksburn Place last year, the attentiveness of the concierge, Billy, struck her as amusing. But there he was, heaving the groceries out of her car. Billy graciously signed for parcels and stored them in a VIP locker dedicated to 104. What a shame she didn’t have a dog. If she had, Billy would have called an expert to the dog wash in the basement, there to pouf her pooch to the glamour required in the Malvern Road cafe scene. It’s a natural part of life in Hawksburn Place, the curvy, fivestorey building around the corner from Hawksburn village. Designed by Cox Architecture with interiors by David Hicks, the 22 apartments flew off the plan in 2017. The dream of luxurious ease certainly came true for the owner of 104, who loves her fitted dressing room and the library that pops out a queen-sized bed for her visitors. With two double bedrooms, home automation and open-plan living with a balcony, the scene is set for the next downsizer or small family. The dining and living areas glow in oak chevron beneath a coffered ceiling; step onto the full-width balcony to admire the Edwardian streetscape. Next to the living area, and behind a multifold door, is a petite library with a sofa bed. The kitchen, cool in grey marble, has Miele appliances and a butler’s pantry. Fashion fanciers will love the main bedroom, where the dressing room has two five-door wardrobes and a foot-

There’s a third bathroom, a laundry and, in a quiet corridor, a compact study with a desk and bookcases. Also on title are two car spaces plus storage, and a fitted locker with a wine fridge. Hawksburn Place has a gym, sauna, car wash and, of course, the glass-fenced dog wash, where a big steel bath, scissors, fur dryers and deluxe shampoos await the filthy beast. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au Agent: Abercromby’s, Kharla Williams 0412 064 838 Price: $1.65 million-$1.815 million Private sale: by 4pm, December 5
