Editorz Notez Doobie Sykes MARK YOUR CALENDARS The Behind Barz Presentz Bike Nightz Schedule has been set in stone! Details on page 14-15 Please note.... There are a couple of changes! As everyone knows we were hit hard by severe tornadic weather on April 16th. Many of us are actually very Blessed and did not get injured nor did we receive any damage from the storms. The National Weather Service now says the number of confirmed tornadoes on the weekend of the 16th is up to 28, which breaks the N.C. record for the size of a tornado outbreak. Keep all those who were effected by these storms in your prayers! Check the “Flight of Honor” story on pages 8-9. Very interesting read! Many of our WWII veterans are no longer with us. Anything you can do to get involved with this organization would be marvelous. My grandaddy will be flying out of South Dakota in May to go to DC for the “Flight of Honor”. I will certainly be there with him for this ‘once in a lifetime’ event. Story & photos to follow. We are now working dilagently on our 7th Anniversary commemorative 3D issue. Be on the look-out for that later this year... it will be a first ever, motorcycle mag that is entirely
in 3D! It will come with a set of 3D glasses!!!

West Virginia's Rumble in the valley Benef iting local Charities

Martinsburg, West Virginia: Martinsburg will welcome bikers from across the country this June 23 through 26, as the first annual WV Rumble in the Valley takes place. The rally will be held off Novak Drive in Martinsburg and feature live entertainment, contests, vendors, camping and more.
“We wanted to create a true motorcycle rally and attract bikers from up and down the mid-Atlantic and beyond to Martinsburg,” said Mike McBrearty, one of the Rumble coordinators. “We plan on making this one of West Virginia’s best biker rallies. More importantly, we wanted to raise money for local charities, namely Kids for Christmas, which Harley Construction, Inc. has sponsored for the last 8 years which helps provide local children and their families with Christmas gifts and meals that they would not have otherwise.” WV Rumble in the Valley is an adults-only event (ages 18 and over) and will feature national recording artists Blackfoot. Other bands to include Citizens Band Radio, the #1 Led Zepplin tribute band Kashmir, Surreal, Crossbonz, Defyance, Stoked and other bands. In addition to live music, the rally will host contests, scenic rides, wrestling, a bike rodeo and much more. The rally has just recently add the “Dirty Dollz” Dance team, The Legendary Buffalo Chip Hula Girls, Big Daddy Oil Wrestling and Horns n Hunnies. Flight of honor April 2nd Flight of Honor Benefit Ride On Saturday, April 2nd the Fire and Iron Firefighters MC Station (Chapter) 92 held a poker run to benefit the Rotary District 7680 (Gastonia, NC) Flight of Honor (FOH) Program. Many members of F&I FFMC Station 92 are also Patriot Guard Riders and have participated in FOH Missions. These emotional PGR Missions consist of standing a flagline during the departure and arrival of WWII Veterans on single day trips to Washington DC to see their WWII Memorial. The overwhelming sense of American Pride is what brought F&I FFMC Station 92 to wanting to support these Vets and this program.
story & photos: John Hilfirty
ON March 4th, 2011 Corporal Frank Buckles of West Virginia passed away at the age of 110. He lied about his age to join the military at age 16 and he served during World War One. At one point during the war, he became a POW. He spent the rest of his life as an advocate of Veterans Rights and a proponent of a National WWII Memorial. Cpl. Buckles was buried in Arlington National Cemetary on March 15th, 2011 without ever having had a National WWI Memorial. The WWII Memorial opened to the public in 2004. Realizing the need to assist our elderly WWII Vets, most living on fixed incomes and experiencing adverse health conditions, The Flight of Honor Program started in Ohio. The first flight was in 2005 and consisted of 6 small aircraft transporting 2 WWII Vets each to Washington, DC free of charge. In that year, 127 WWII Vets went to see their Memorial, free of charge. The first chartered commercial flight left Asheville, NC in 2006 with over 100 WWII Vets on board. The program has since expanded to a nationwide program and in 2010 22,149 WWII Vets that otherwise would not have had the resources to do so were flown to Washington, DC to see their Memorial, FREE OF CHARGE. The average cost to send a Vet is $500. A chartered commercial flight costs an estimated $65,000.00.

The poker run sponsored by F&I FFMC Station 92 started on a sunny but blustery day at RideNow Powersports in Concord. Manager Steve Kolicko and his staff were 100% supportive of the event and provided manpower, tents, coffee, doughnuts, and door prizes. 105 Motorcycles carrying 160 riders were registered in Concord for the event. The ride was a nice easy country ride stretching 90 miles. The route took riders out of Concord and into Rowan County to the AmVets Post 485 in Rockwell, NC. AmVets Post 485 served refreshments for a donation and those funds were donated to the event along with an initial donation of $200. From there the route took riders to the Stanley County Airport. This stop was supported by the 235th Air Traffic Control Squadron of the NC Air National Guard. The 235th ATCS displayed its field radar unit. It was a drill weekend and there were C-130 Aircraft

flying. There was also a mass casualty exercise taking place deploying medical teams from across the state. The route then passed through Albemarle and RED Cross going to the American Legion Post 440 on Hwy 218 in New Salem, NC. The four county 90 mile route concluded at Tumbleweeds Bar and Grill in Monroe, NC. An additional 8-10 bikers registered at Tumbleweeds to support this event. There were vendors in place for bikers to purchase anything from parts to leathers. Tumbleweeds Bar and Grill supported the event with free food, and had additional staff and beer tubs on hand to handle the crowd. Live music was supplied by JINX and they were excellent rocking the outdoor stage with great music! Prizes for best and worst hand included tickets to the upcoming Coca-Cola 600 and Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, door prizes were plentiful and a big Thank You to Brendan Greene who donated back his portion of the 50/50. The silent auction was successful too raising over $800.00. The after party went well into the evening and for those that decided to spend the night, the Quality Inn across the street discounted rooms to ride participants.
The Fire and Iron Firefighters MC, Station 92 would like to thank all the riders who supported this ride. Thankfully there were no mishaps and there was only one breakdown that we assisted by trailer. This successful event raised over $2,250.00 for the Rotary District 7680 Flight of Honor Program. That is enough money to support four WWII Vets and a Guardian on a trip to Washington, DC to see their Memorial. We would also like to Thank all of the participating stops, vendors, WIXE Radio and the many people who helped promote the event in the weeks leading up to same. Thanks also goes out to all those businesses who donated door prizes and silent auction items!
For more information or if you wish to purchase ride tshirts or donate to this ongoing cause, please visit these websites... www.honorflight.org www.flightofhonor. com www.wwiimemorial.com and www.fireandironstation92.com The Fire and Iron FFMC Station 92 is also actively recruiting new members. If you have two consecutive years of duty as an active volunteer or career firefighter, are a retired volunteer or career firefighter and live in the area bordered by I-40, Hwy 321, the NC/SC State Line and the Yadkin River… please visit our website and contact us for more information. We also accept “Emergency Responding” EMS personnel with four consecutive years of duty. Support staff, such as dispatchers and mechanics are also welcome. There is an active Fire and Iron FFMC (Station 78) in Swannanoa, NC if you live in the mountains and we would like to start up new stations in the Triangle, Triad and Eastern parts of NC. Holly Tolson’s
Benefit Ride
Holly Tolson’s benefit ride was Saturday, March 19, and what a beautiful day it was! The weather was perfect and we had about 120 bikers. The guided ride organized by Charlene & Tim Martin started at Doug’s HarleyDavidson of Florence, S.C. The riders took the back roads of Darlington County, 56 miles in all, stopping half way for a pit stop and ending at the Darlington Moose Lodge #595. That is where Holly & non-riders were. They were out front to greet the bikers as they rolled in. Everyone then gathered inside for food and live entertainment by Southern Rain, raffles & 50/50, as well as a silent auction, which included art work by Holly, herself.
Special Thanks to the many sponsors, Charlene & Tim Martin, Doug’s Harley-Davidson, and Darlington Moose Lodge #595, S.C. State Troopers and Darlington County Police.
Holly suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type I. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a motor neuron disease. The motor neurons affect the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. Approximately 1 in 6000 babies born are affected, and about 1 in 40 people are genetic carriers. Holly has already lost her ability to swallow and she now receives her formula through a feeding tube. She runs the risk of choking or getting food in her lungs if she eats anything by mouth. Additionally, Holly has several medical machines that she depends on to help keep her healthy and undergoes daily treatments and weekly therapy. Holly cannot sit, crawl, stand or hold her head up and has limited movement of her legs and arms. story & photos: Christy Tolson

supportourmarinesinc.com What started in 2005 with a few boxes of blankets and skittles to some cold Marines on the Syrian border has grown into Support Our Marines, Inc. Over 5 years and more than 5 thousand packages to over 200 Marine contacts in some of the most remote locations, we continue on. Our mission: To support Marines not getting mail and those in the most remote locations without “luxuries” such as indoor plumbing, hot meals, showers, often times electricity or PX’s from which to purchase necessities. Over the years, I’ve have found that these humble heroes often fall under the radar of “troop support” organizations and corporate donors. As such, SOM was formed to fill a very specific need. We focus on locating in the most remote locations and those not receiving mail and send them packages, simple as that. Dianne Villano , President Support Our Marines http://www.supportourmarinesinc.org/ dianne@supportourmarinesinc.org
We will be moving soon. Thank you so kindly for all of the great letters and care packages and I hope that it fills your hearts with joy to know that we are doing well and hanging in there despite the fast optempo. My Marines are doing the great things that I have trained them to do and I am so proud. Each day in the stacked odds, we over come the enemy and succeed in countless missions that help the local population. Our missions will be changing soon and our living conditions which will be putting us “bare” to say the least so mail call will be that much more of our support. As grunts, we will be moving great distances by foot and establishing new locations to operate our patrols out of and will continue to seek out the enemy here to push them back. We will be moving with only our rucks on our backs and our combat loads. The rest of our gear , we hope will be lifted to our new locations but, how knows If you know Marines, you know we always manage to make some type of home wherever we may fall and we will adapt and overcome no matter what. That is what we have been trained to do, we will find and build shelter, find protection and , above all we will survive no matte the conditions Your support and kindness is what helps these boys and what helps drive me to be able to battle the conditions and the stress by focusing on all of the reasons we are here and all the wonderful people we have at home who have not forgotten about us
Sgt, Matthew Miller
Dianne, Thanks again for all support from my guys and I hope to stay in contact with you over the years! I am sure that I will be back here in a year or so! Can’t keep a career Marine away from the sand box that long! Thanks again for everything over the past 9 months! Semper Fi, Jon
Major Jon P. Connolly Operations Officer FOB Marjeh, Afghanistan
I would like to close this email and say, truly , from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for your support and your kind letters. We are here to protect the American way of life. Thank you for being our America and our reason to stand up and fight and we will be home when this is all over. Until then, we will make you proud to be part of our family Respectfully, Sgt, Matthew Miller

at Sacred Flam The Behind Barz Presentz Bike Nightz kick-off was the biggest and baddest BB Bike Night to date! The winds howled all day but the crowds still came. The event started at 11am with free food until about 1:30pm. The Switch was on stage at noon. The vendors were set up ready to meet the masses and the winds were gusting up to and over 45 miles an hour!!! There were several other bands that were on stage after The Switch: Diggerfoot, Torn Between, Against Their Will, Slaves To Addiction, Enemy of the Public and DJ Condor. There was even a Fire Show by Caos and Surge! The Bike Show was won by . He won a one of a kind, custom plaque and trophy! There was a Corn-hole tournament with awesome custom cornholeboards and cash as prizes! Paul “Fly Boy” Jackson flew in on his chopper...even in the high winds...landed right in the parking lot - amazin’! There were several local race cars and drivers hanging out with us during the day and meeting the folks who stopped by the event. Terry and his crew from Sacred Flames held an awesome Bike Night, despite the wind. They gave away some pretty spectacular prizes...Mongoose mountain bikes, flat screen TVs, a Bud Fridge, an electric guitar and many other prizes! Sorry about the mix up on the beer. We were told to begin with that beer could be given away with raffle tickets. Then, just two days before the event, we were told that was illegal. Thanks to everyone who came out for the Bike Night. Thanks also to everyone who made it possible and who participated as a vendor, sponsor or volunteer. Thanks Terry for a KILLER Behind Barz Bike Nightz kick-off!!!

Bob's Pub On February 26 in Stantonsburg, N.C., a familiar pit stop for bikers in the area had a Grand Opening with a new name and new owners. Due to health problems former owner Wendy Bray hated having to let go of the bar Wendy Trails, but was thrilled that her friends Bob and Debra Burke decided to buy it from her. Bob’s first visit to the bar was in 2005 during a poker run. He said he really liked the place and the people that he met that day, but he never thought he would one day own the place. He always thought you had more fun on the other side of the bar, but said he has just as much fun behind the bar serving drinks. Although they took ownership in late January, Bob wanted to get a few things done before having the Grand Opening. So, on February 26, they opened the doors of Bob’s Pub. The Burkes had helped the former owner out on weekends for quite a while so they are familiar faces to all that frequent the bar. According to Bob, approximately 50 friends cane out on opening day to wish them good luck, including: CBA, Guardian Brotherhood, Southern Iron, Wilson and Edgecombe County Ghost Riders, and several independent bikers. Bob’s Pub isn’t going to try and compete with the other bars in the area, but they do want to do things a little bit different. The summer hours will be Wednesday thru Thursday 4-9pm, Friday 4-11pm, Saturday 1211pm, and Sunday 12-7pm. The bar will have Pabst Blue Ribbon in the can for $1.00 every day and on Sundays they will have something there for patrons to eat (hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, something cooked up by Bob) as well as having all can beer being a $1.00. They will have a Steak Night on Thursday (you bring your steak and the Pub will cook it for you and supply salad and potatoes). During parties and poker runs frozen t-shirt and frozen boxer shorts contests will be held if anyone is interested in participating. Bob’s will also be host to the CBA Legislative meetings on the third Wednesday night of the month at 7:30pm and the Burkes welcome anyone interested to come out to meet the members of CBA - even if you are not a member. On May 21st, Bob’s Pub will also host the CBA Poker Run & Gun Raffle. While on October 15 they will be hosting the final Behind Barz Presentz Bike Nightz. Tuscarora
Spring Thaw story & photos: Johnnie King
Every year the Tuscarora MC hosts their Spring Thaw Party which has always been considered the kickoff of the riding and party season. This party has become a tradition with many people coming from all over to come out and party with the Club. With strong winds early on in the day it didn’t stop the bikers, friends, family, and newcomers from coming out to Greene County and the Tuscarora MC Clubhouse. As always, the Club had planned for a good crowd and for the early arrivals. Hurricane had the cauldron filled with lima beans and sausage for those that couldn’t wait for the evening meal. The bar was stocked to the brim before opening the gates, but that didn’t stop extra trips to the store for extra refreshments for the growing crowd. Some of those attending were: Desperados, Brotherhood, Southern Sin, Ghost Riders (Edgecombe, Lenoir, Wayne and Wilson Counties) Veterans, Freedom Riders, DBA and Leather & Lace (which is an all female motorcycle Club). All those attending were catching up with what everyone had been doing over the winter and what the plans for the coming riding season were going to be, learning when other upcoming parties were going to be, as well as, seeing old friends and meeting new friends. The Club also had some vendors there to let guests start replenishing accessories needed for their ride, from Black Widow Accessories and pottery jewelry from Browning Pottery. At 6:30pm, Hurricane started taking up the pig for chopping, but while he was chopping up half the pig, everyone started picking at the half left on the grill not leaving much for him to chop. While he finished up with the pig the guests were already lining up to get their plates for the meal. As always, the members ladies put out a fantastic spread for the guests including: boiled potatoes, snaps, cole slaw, macaroni salad, mac and cheese, deviled eggs, green bean casserole, baked beans, cupcakes, brownies, and the best banana pudding around (if you never had any of this pudding your are definitely missing out). After everyone had eaten, Steel Standing took the stage and rocked the crowd with some really great tunes. Newest member of the band, ‘Big Mike’ Bullock, put his heart into every song making it his own. Around 11pm, Chaser took the stage for the door prizes and the big winners were Wilson Co. Ghost Riders and the ladies with the Brotherhood MC. After giving out door prizes, Chaser announced a Poker Run for Crump. Crump was a friend of the Club who was killed last year after leaving the Spring Thaw Party, when a man crossed over into his lane and hit him head on. Once all the door prizes were given out Steel Standing took the stage again and rocked the crowd for another set of songs to the enjoyment of everyone there.
Steel Standing
Once again Tuscarora pulled off an awesome party with GREAT food, OUTSTANDING hospitality and a FANTASTIC band to the pleasure of all those attending. These guys out do themselves every year from party to party. So if you didn’t make it to the Spring Thaw, the guys have an Anniversary party in September. So, go on and make plans to be there because you definitely won’t be disappointed. As always……AWESOME…..party guys. You are all going to have to plan something extra special for the next one to outdo yourselves.

Been There, Sniffed That By: Chewy (Biker Dog) If you follow me on my website or on Facebook, then you know I ride a lot. Last year, I rode 18,000 miles and most of that was with the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) to honor our Fallen Heroes, Wounded Warriors, those serving now, and those who served. In March 2011, for example, I rode 3,300 miles – almost all of it was on PGR missions. Do you know what a Gold Star Mother and Blue Star Mother is? If not, that’s OK – you’re among the majority. Most of the people I sniff don’t know what the Blue Star and Gold Star represents. Blue Star Moms are mothers who now have, or have had, children honorably serving in the military. If you are serving now in the military or you are a veteran, thank you for your service. Your service made your mother a Blue Star Mom. Gold Star Moms are mothers who lost a son or daughter in the service of our country. In January, I was nominated and was honored to become an Honorary Member of the American Gold Star Mothers – Dogwood Chapter. My driver and I had the honor of standing for and escorting a number of Fallen Heroes and meeting their Gold Star Families. Our men and women in uniform know that they could be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Let’s honor and remember our Fallen Heroes, and let’s respect our men and women defending or who have defended our freedoms. On April 2, I took a break from supporting our military and attended the kick-off event of the Behind Barz Bike Nightz at Sacred Flames Tattoos in Wilson, NC. I was there for a couple of hours, but sniffed (met) lots of people. The band sounded great, but I had to move away because my ears are more sensitive than people’s ears – the music was loud and my driver loved it! There were race cars there and lots of bikes and food. I sat in the driver’s seat of Crow Whitley’s race car. I didn’t pee on the tires, but I thought about doing it. I also sniffed Elizabeth and John. We are friends on Facebook, but had never met. I appreciate that Elizabeth went to the event just to meet me. I will try to attend as many Bike Nightz as possible, even if I’m only there for a couple of hours. Doobie, my driver, and I talked about me writing occasional short articles for Behind Barz, so please let us know what you think.
Here I am sitting in the drivers seat of Crow Whitley’s race car!!! Crow is in the photo with me!
Here I am with some of the members of the Dogwood Chapter of the Gold Star Mothers.
Meanwhile, what’s coming up? Memorial Day. It seems like more and more Americans view this day as a 3-day weekend or the start of summer vacation. What will you be doing on Memorial Day? Let’s all please remember that this day is intended to honor and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. If you know a Gold Star Mom, thank her for her child’s service and sacrifice. You can keep up with me at www.bikerdoggie.com, where you can find a link to my Facebook Fan Page. Ride safe and keep your tongue in the wind!
