Our troops are still deployed, still training, working, serving and sacrificing for you and for our country. Give of yourself to say thank you!
This is the BEST DONATION!!! This is precooked, vacuum sealed Bacon! Doesn’t need refrigeration so can be sent to troops in care packages! Help us put smiles on the faces of our troops because everyone LOVES BACON!
Here is a great idea...The goody bags, pictured below, are packed with granola bars, small packs of nuts, trail mix, sunflower seeds, drink mixes. Hot chocolate, slim Jim’s, lip balm, and various candies. Easy for individuals to do or church groups, school groups, office groups, bike clubs, etc. All it takes for this project are some baggies and the sky is the limit on what you can pack in them!
Canned goods and dry goods/boxed are also a very good idea to send to our troops.
Goody bags!
Volunteers working hard at the center! Giving of their time and talents to send goodies to our troops!!!
Thanks to everyone for the money for postage, items for our troops, specially made items, bought items, hand written cards & notes, donating your time at the center and helping us move, pack, ship, load, address, and seal with a kiss all of the packages we have sent out this year to our troops abroad. We could not have done it without you!

BIKE SAFE NC
Having seen ads for the NC Bike Safe course, I decided to sign up & see what it was about. The class I took was held at the Wilson County EMS building on Glendale Ave, here in Wilson.
story & photos: Budman
Three Motor Officers from the Wilson Police Dept. were our instructors for the day. Sgt. Benny Boykin, along with Senior Police Officers Justin Cox & Kenneth Robinson did a superb job both in the classroom & on the road. The course is sponsored by the State of North Carolina, and the classes are most often held by various Police Departments across the state. Our class was a four-part affair. We all met in the parking lot of the EMS building around 8:30 AM, were welcomed by our instructors, and got to take a close-up look at the R 1200 RT BMW bikes they ride. Then we went inside for a video presentation, question and answer period, and directions outlining our first of two rides. Before we took off on a ride around the city, the Officers checked our driver’s licenses’ for a motorcycle endorsement & our bikes to make sure the lights and horns worked. Two of us five students went first, followed by Sgt. Boykin so he could www.BikeSafeNC.com assess our riding habits. The other students also had our Motor Officers following them. We rode for maybe 20 minutes or so, ending up at Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch. When I went out to the parking lot after lunch, I found our instructors surrounded by Moms, Dads & kids of all ages admiring all the motorcycles, especially the Police Bikes. The Motor Officers activated their flashing blue and red lights much to the delight of the children and even put a few of them on the seats of their bikes! Here was some beautiful interaction of the Police and the public. Everyone was smiles, the parents were happily using their cell phones to take pictures of the excited kids as the Officers patiently explained the various workings of their ‘Motors’. I hope those photos made it to Facebook and other forms of social media, because I never see anything this positive about the Police in the major medias.
Back to the classroom for some feedback on our riding and another great video presentation. After that, we went on our long ride, around Wilson County and a short break at Buckhorn Lake. We did encounter some heavy rain on the ride home, so we cut that a bit short. After another critique session with suggestions on how to be safer riders, Sgt. Boykin presented us with certificates while Officers Cox and Robinson handed out some nifty items like Bike Safe key-rings, decals, kickstand pads & patches. It was clear to me that our instructors love to ride motorcycles, and were there to help us all become safer riders. The course gave us students a chance to ask questions we would not usually be able to ask and get a rare insight into what life is like for the men behind the badges. I hope I have encouraged some of you readers to take the course. I learned a lot and had a great time the whole day. You can find out more about the course by going to bikesafenc.com. You’ll be glad you did.

Motor Maid News Ride to Moncton New Brunswick for Convention: Pam Jewell and I left on Thursday June 25th to meet Sammie Wisner to head out for convention. We got to Moncton on Saturday, June 27th. Once we got a room, I called my friend Cheryl MacLaggan, who lives there. We made plans to meet for breakfast along with two other local girls. The six of us took off down the coast, taking pictures of lighthouses, covered bridges, and lobsters in a big holding tank. Sammie and Cheryl had to play with the lobsters, me, I just wanted to eat one! Two more Atlantic Canada girls joined us in Alma for a lobster lunch. Betty had been raised on an Island in a lighthouse off of Fundy Trail. The lighthouse is still there, but not in use. Betty wrote a book on lighthouses. I would like to get a copy of it, unfortunately it is no longer in print. She brought me her copy to read on the last day of convention, and I never got a chance to see it. After checking out a gift shop, I found a cute guy in a yellow rain suit to take my picture with. We did get a lot of pictures of the river it was low tide. While Sammie and Cheryl had to attend to some Motor Maids business on Monday, Pam and I put up flyers on Main Street to Welcome Motor Maids to Moncton. Tuesday found us riding on route 6 along the river to Nova Scotia. We saw an old train that is now a motel and diner. Wish we had time to stay, but we did have time for a visit to the gift shop.

Confederation Bridge
On to the Cabot Trail, we did it counter-clock wise to keep the Ocean to our right. Lots of pictures, I want to paint one on canvas (a winter project). We had lunch overlooking the ocean, another seafood restaurant, what else. We were about ¾ the way around Cabot Trail, when we stopped for the 2nd night at a motel overlooking the river, it was July 1st “Canada Day” so we were able to see the fireworks. After a great breakfast, plus a stop at another gift shop, we headed for Prince Edward Island (PEI). Crossing the Confederation Bridge into PEI is free, but it will cost you $18.25 to come back from PEI. It was so pretty there, I could have stayed. We rode to the far end of the island to the lighthouse welcome center. We got our ribbon in doing the tip to tip ride, from one tip of the island to the other. Cheryl was taking pictures of things on a grand tour like we do. One was houses made of glass bottles, a GIANT BLUEBERRY, 2 lighthouses, signs and other things. We had dinner at a lobster house on the water. Then, rode on to find a motel for the night, it was 9 PM before we found one. It was done in antiques, nice. We got up the next morning, and headed to our last stop, for the tip to tip lighthouse to get our certificate. Riding with Cheryl was great for she knows all the back roads and places to see. Then we headed back to Moncton because we had work to do before Convention. Going to Convention is the best way to get to know other Motor Maids, making friends for life from coast to coast. I have been a Motor Maid for 24 years and have been to 23 conventions. While I was District Director, our district

All Conventions have to have 2 meetings, the Road Run, and the parade, then anything you want to do. That is what makes it so much fun, the different things the districts come up with. The country side going to convention and the different places you get to see. Go one way and back another, there is so much to see in our world. Enjoy it!!!

CAMP RAINBOW On May 16th 2015 Snow Hill Moose Riders had their 5th annual Camp Rainbow ride. Riders started out at the Snowhill Moose Lodge. There were 27 bikes and 1 pickup truck on the ride going to Camp Rainbow.
story and photo: Bettyboop
Once at the camp, the group was greeted by Jacqueline Sauls, the director for camp rainbow, at Vidant Pediatric Hematology Oncology. She told the group that for one week doctors and nurses volunteered their time to help children with cancer and other chronic blood disorders. They helped them experience sailing, fishing, kayaking, swimming and so much more. But most importantly, they were understanding and helping them know that they are not alone in their fight. Once back at the lodge in Snow Hill there were door prizes, 50/50 drawings, and food but most importantly, there was socializing among the group. To all our sponsors and Individuals that donated and all the riders...
You help put a smile on a child’s face that will be able to go to Camp Rainbow! Because of you we were able to present a check for over $5,500. That will amount will send six kids to camp! For this, you have our heartfelt thanks! God bless and ride safe!

Take Care of Your Feet! When Mikey fell in love, he said he was “swept off his feet.” When Linda wasn’t sure about retiring, her sweetie said she had “cold feet.” Red Head was so sensible; her kids always said she had “both feet on the ground.” Everyone agrees it’s important to put “your best foot forward.” Be kind to your feet. Years of wear and tear can be hard on them. So can disease, bad circulation, poorly trimmed toenails, and wearing shoes that don’t fit. Foot problems can sometimes be the first sign of a more serious medical condition such as arthritis, diabetes, and nerve or circulatory disorders. Practice good foot care. Take a look at your feet often; use a mirror to look at the bottoms of your feet. If you have diabetes, be sure to check your feet every day.
Here are some foot facts! Did you know???? ~ When you put your feet up when you are sitting down that it helps the circulation in your feet. ~ Corns and calluses are caused by pressure when the bony parts of your feet rub against your shoes. ~ Warts are skin growths caused by viruses. ~ Bunions can be caused by shoes that are too small or have pointed toes. ~ Your shoe size may change as you age. ~ Most of us have one foot larger than the other so make sure your shoes fit your bigger foot. ~ Hammertoe is caused by a shortening of the tendons that control toe movements. ~ Spurs are bony bumps that grow on bones of your feet. They are caused by stress on the feet. ~ Both diabetes and peripheral artery disease can cause poor blood flow to the feet. ~ Metatarsalgia is pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot. ~ Plantar wart is a viral infection in the sole of the foot that can form a callus with a central dark spot. Walk the path you are born to walk and don’t get off on the wrong foot. If you have a problem with your feet, see your family doctor or a podiatrist.
Ride Safe, Keep the Boots on your feet and be blessed!

We Ride North Carolina Meet and Greet --- On September 19, 2015, members of We Ride NC met at Pik N Pig BBQ Restaurant in Carthage, NC for an awesome lunch, topped off with lots of laughs and fun. Following some of the best BBQ we have ever had, members lined up in an awesome display of motorcycles and hit the road for a scenic ride to Morrow Mountain State Park. New friends were made, old friends reconnected, and miles of treasured memories were added to each biker’s collection. One of the most memorable events of the day displayed the true heart of bikers in a way that none of the participants will soon forget. Jennifer Thompson is a member of the group who is unable to ride her own bike as a result of Cerebral Palsy. Jennifer loves to ride and feel the wind in her face but most of all, she says she loves the fellowship and friendship that Bikers have shown her. She says that they have always welcomed her with open arms and have never treated her any differently. Today was no exception. When asked for a volunteer to agree to let Jennifer ride on their bike so she could join us, several Bikers immediately jumped at the opportunity. When it came time to load up on the bikes, eight Bikers rushed to Jennifer’s aid and helped her get settled in on the back of Marshall Walter’s bike. The smile on Jennifer’s faced lasted the entire ride and the sparkle in her eyes Jennifer on the showed that Bikers truly are some bike with Marshall. of the most caring and giving people in the world.

from the
mind of big ed I just need to feel the wind. I just need the freedom of bending back the throttle, and my bike understands that, and it gives me the medication I need...R.P.M.s. I used to be a man that lived and breathed life on impulses. You know, like just before the bull entered the china shop or just before you pull the pin and let go of the spoon of a hand grenade right before you toss it in a rent-a-john.
Hello you Happy Riders!! Well, now that the summer is gone and the kids went back to their mother’s in Washington, I felt like it was a good time to hit two wheels to let my mind go. The kids being here was awesome and they sure do love to ride! They are also like human fish. It seems we were always in a lake or pond. We were in some sort of water every time I was off from work, I know that. But now that they are there, me and my Ol Lady, Colleen (understand, she doesn’t consider that offensive.. you know since I’m way older then her) but anyway back to what I was saying, we have been getting ready for our son, Wyatt, to be born. We’ve been painting and shopping and it seems my two wheels has been collecting dust over the past few weeks, and I got to tell ya, my bike is like one of the best shrinks you can go to! You know when you just need to relax your mind and let your soul breath and when spilling your guts to some person kicked back in a chair just ain’t your style. You see, I think my bike understands me. There’s no bitchin’ I’m doing. I’m not complaining or crying some sob story of how I may have been dropped on my head a few times as a child.
My choices in life were either going to go calm and cool or just blow up in a crap storm in my face!! But as I got older I learned to think before I acted. But, you see, when I ride its not just the wind, it’s not just the sound of my pipes, or the open highway...When I’m on the road and I dig into that throttle and the gears start spinning and one gear leads to another as oil circulates thru out the motor, my mind let’s go. I forget about the issues at work. I forget about bills. I forget about people’s drama. I just let it all go and I enjoy what God has created. I see the sun set off in the horizon. I see the sky turn into a painting of blues and oranges and purples. I feel the rush. I taste the bugs as they splatter against my teeth as I’m grinning from ear to ear. I love it people!! Its a mini vacation. A connection of machine and soul!! I’m sure you folks know what I’m saying. If you don’t then you need to stop right now, and learn to ride and experience what I’m telling you ‘cause once you feel the connection and you feel you’re at one with your bike and the freedom it possess you’ll see why we who ride on two wheels are so compassionate about this life of being a biker! We bikers are not cold hearted, tattoo covered a$$holes flipping middle fingers and cutting off people in traffic. Well, not all of us. We are people who love life. We love our bikes and we love the freedom of the open road. It’s a great life we live and that’s the best therapy money can buy! So, why not try it? We are only on this big blue ball once. And life is too short to see it in a cage. Try it. Oh...our baby is due the beginning of Nov. So, keep an eye ready for the next issue, and I’ll see you Behind Barz.

Biker Barn Saturday, 10 October, 2015. Spring Hope, NC
Open House
The weather prediction for the day of the Biker Barn’s annual Open House called for rain to move in about twelve to one. Even with the forcast of rain for the day, there were many motorcycles in attendance. Gary puts on this event once a year with free food, a bike show and raffle prizes. Outside, Bruce, George and all the Biker Barn Crew did an awesome job on the grills! They cooked up 100 lbs. of chicken, 300 hotdogs and 200 lbs. of porkchops! At the end of the day, there was only one tray of chops left. It’s like somebody by the name of Hammerhead or Mr. Hammer said, “You can’t touch this!” Inside the building where tables were set up for folks to eat, were several tables of nothing but desserts! The main event there is ALWAYS Miss Alma’s bannana pudding! If she could only bottle that nanner puddin’, I would buy it by the case! Lance gave out prizes all day long. You could sign up in the show room of the Biker Barn and they would give ya five tickets. By the time the trophies were given out for the Bike Show it had started raining. Several trophies were given out but Mike from Franklin County won, “Best In Show”. It was a great day and a great turn-out for Gary’s event! Thanks to everyone for coming out. It was a wet ride home but hey, well worth it! Make sure and be there next year if you missed this one! How many times have we got to tell ya, you won’t eat no better!!!

ride to remember August 18th, 2015 Shelby, NC
Story by Blue Star Bud. Photos by OB1 & Blue Star Bud
Over 80 riders attended the 8th Annual ‘Ride to Remember’ sponsored by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, Chapter 15-2 in Shelby, NC. The ride started and ended at Scooterz Saloon in Shelby with a police escort by the Shelby PD , the Cleveland Co. Sheriff’s Dept. and the great guys from the Cleveland Volunteer Fire Dept. following the pack in their fire truck. The ride was in honor of all our nations veterans who served their country from the American Revolution to the present. Mr. C.J. Sauer & Lori generously allowed the use of Scooterz Saloon for the event. We owe them a big debt of gratitude. Ride Captains ‘Doc’, ‘Oz’ & ‘Wally’ made sure we had a safe, fun ride through the rolling Cleveland County countryside. At the tops of the hills we could see Kings Mountain in the distance. Once we got back to Scooterz Saloon the crowd was fed & then Chapter 15-2 Commander Donnie ‘Maddawg’ Henderson called out the winning door prize numbers and the 50-50 drawing. Tommy Frazier won the 50-50, made a purchase from the auction, then in true biker spirit, donated the rest of his winnings back to the Chapter. $3400 was raised to help local veteran charities. After the drawings & auctions we enjoyed excellent live music by the band SOUTHERN EXPERIENCE. CVMA Chapter 15-2 was proud to ‘patch-in’ their newest member ‘Road Rash.’ Thanks for your service brother. We want to thank everyone who attended for their support, the ladies of ST12 Scooterz Riding Club, the officers from the Shelby Police Dept., the deputies from the Cleveland Co. Sheriff’s Dept. and especially the folks from the Cleveland Co. Volunteer Fire Dept. for having our 6. It was good to see my old friends OB1, Shug, Fury, OZ, Buddha, & Trophy Husband again, and to make new friends. I hope to see them all next year for the 9th Annual Ride to Remember.

Ride for the Ribbon Saturday, Oct. 10th Greenville, NC
Ride for the
I’ve never seen so much pink in my life! The parking lot of the Eastern Radiologists Breast Imaging Center in Greenville, NC was packed with motorcycles, riders, volunteers, tents, and lots of brave women who have battled breast cancer by going in swinging & coming out winners. Every one of those BC survivors is a brave warrior who any Grunt, Marine, Sailor or Flyer would be proud to fight alongside in battle. Their motto is ‘FIGHT LIKE A GIRL’. Beautiful ladies from all walks of life were there, every one of them a true hero, and once again...the motorcycling community turned out in mass to encourage & support the survivors with a showing of pink ribbons, flags and shirts. We had a great ride, covering about 100 miles with 3 stops for refreshments & to draw cards for the poker run. While the ride did have it’s own Ride Captain and road blockers, we were very lucky to have a group of guys from the Derelicts RC on their Streetfighters run interference for us. A huge thanks to Kill Switch, Kris / Big Nasty, Little Foot & the rest of the fellows for keeping our large group of riders safe. Our ride ended back in Greenville at the ERBIC. Tired riders were treated to a live band, tasty sandwiches & cold drinks, a bag of goodies, raffle drawings, and a 50-50 which Bud won. The net proceeds from this event will be used in eastern NC to support breast cancer screenings / early detection programs and provide assistance to breast cancer patients during treatment. To all those brave women fighting breast cancer, the families, friends, generous bikers, doctors, nurses & staff who support them in their battle...Bless your hearts, every last one of you. We had 80 bikes in the Ride. 70 in Greenville and 10 more started in Washington. To date, we have raised $15, 638. We will still be selling event t-shirts. Hopefully we can get to the $16,000 by the end of the year! Despite the rain, we raised just under last year’s total of $17,000. It took many generous hearts and hands to pull those funds together! I am so appreciative to all the employees that volunteered and participated in the fundraisers, the businesses that sponsored and donated, the patients who bought t-shirts and raffle tickets, and the die hard bikers who came out participated in Ride for the Ribbon regardless of the overcast skies and rain!! Thank you and congrats on winning the 50/50 raffle!! ~ Addie Best

~ Read It…Ride It…Live It ~ By David Henson Managing partner of HensonFuerst Attorneys.
“My closest friends call me Wolf.” ********************************************************* Welcome to the world of Wayne Littrell. Biker. Novelist. Safety advocate. Wayne has published two novels, The Lone Wolf Murders and Lone Wolf Rides, thrillers that center on a biker named John ‘Wolf’ Trotter. Yes, the books have all manner of excitement—mystery, murder, and mayhem. But for bikers, the best part are the wild rides through the back roads of North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. “The locations come first,” Littrell says. “I love to explore back country roads. I use various GPS settings to take me places I might not see otherwise. Then I ask, ‘What if…?’ That’s how the stories happen.” If you want to imagine riding down Alligator Alley in Florida, or find overlooked curvy roads near Rider’s Roost in North Carolina, Wayne Littrell can take you there. His descriptions are so vivid that some riding clubs have recreated portions of Wolf’s journeys. Maps are in his books. But Wayne’s strongest motivation as a writer is safety. While he has never had a motorcycle accident himself in 35 years and more than 400k miles of riding, he knows that disaster can happen in a blink, typically when everything seems to be going well. He was one of 600 bikers on a toy run when a freak accident led to a biker’s death, and he has been first at the scene of several motorcycle accidents. Those incidents helped harden his focus on safety and defensive riding. And he brings his message to his readers by beginning each chapter in Lone Wolf’s Run with a safety tip, then uses the tip during the action that follows. As Wayne says, “If my writing can save a life or prevent an accident, I’ve accomplished my primary goal.”
28
Mission accomplished. One of Wayne Littrell’s readers reported a potentially deadly accident was prevented after reading this safety tip in Chapter 1: Assume you’re invisible to others—even when stopped. Be prepared with an escape plan. The reader was on a pleasure ride when he passed a woman in a Mercedes who was texting while driving. He pulled ahead to get away from her (as per the tip for Chapter 28: Watch for signs of distracted drivers and put distance between you and them). Minutes later, the biker stopped at a traffic light, and mentally tagged the turn lane as his “escape plan.” Watching his mirror, he saw the Mercedes was not braking behind him and approaching way too fast to stop in time. The biker reacted and used his escape route…and not a second too soon. The Mercedes skidded to a stop within inches of the car he had been behind. Without the escape plan, the biker would have been sandwiched between the two cages. The safety tips are a natural fit for a biker novel. And you can’t hear them enough. As Wayne likes to say, “We do what we think and practice.” The safety information seems to have better mind-traction due to the way they are incorporated into the novels. If you want to check out Wayne Littrell’s novels, they are available from all major online shops, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon, or you can order direct (and get a signed edition) from www.WayneLittrell.com.

Chapter Two We drove through vaguely familiar, yet unfamiliar areas in the direction of Collier H-D, our local Hog dealership. The shop was still there, surrounded by motorcycles as usual, and a welcome sight to all three of us. I suggested that we go inside, grab some cold drinks & discuss what happened. I wasn’t familiar with the Harley models on the showroom floor. Like the trip there, the bikes were similar, but somehow different. A salesman came up to us, introduced himself as Benny & asked if there was anything he could do for us. Suicide Sue spoke up first. “Where’s the ladies’ room Sparky? I’m about to bust.” Sue is nothing if not straightforward. I thanked Benny & said that we’d just like to look around when Zeke started tugging on my arm. “What?” I asked. Zeke pointed to the magazine rack & said “Look!” Well, there were copies of my favorite biker magazine, Behind Barz. Except….the date was wrong. The cover had July/August 2115 in the corner. As I looked around the shop I saw some calendars, all with 2115 on the top. A local newspaper on a desk had the same date. What was going on? I began to get a queasy feeling in my stomach. When Sue came out of the Ladies’ Room with a look of relief on her face, Zeke & I shared our discoveries with her. After a brief discussion, we decided to ask the most knowledgeable, personable person we could hope to find in a motorcycle dealership some questions. So we went to the service counter. The Service Manager looked up at us & asked if he could help us. I told him that the three of us were out riding and seemed to have jumped a hundred years into the future. Since there is nothing a Service Manager hasn’t heard before, the guy didn’t even blink! “Okay. I just work on bikes.” He said. “But I do know someone who would like to hear your story.”
“We call him ‘Brain’, he’s kind of a nerdy historian who rides and he’s bringing his bike in for servicing today. Why don’t you guys just chill out for a while? Brain should be here soon.” About this time someone from the front of the store tap danced through the door & said to the SM “Hey man, you gotta’ come outside & see these antique bikes!” Heck, the three of us like old bikes, so we went outside, too.
30
A small crowd had gathered around a couple of bikes in the parking lot, with oohs & ahhs being overheard. When we finally got to an open spot we saw that everyone was looking at OUR bikes! One girl in particular was snapping photos and touching the bikes as if they were some sort of holy artifacts. When it seemed that she finally had enough photos, she stepped back & turned her camera off. I asked her “What’s the fuss?” “Are you kidding me?” she exclaimed. “I’ve never seen vintage bikes in such primo condition before.” She looked at the bikes, and then gave us the once-over. “They’re your bikes, aren’t they? You guys even dress up in retro clothes & gear to go along with your rides. That is so freakin’ cool!” She stuck out her hand & said “My name’s Deborah, but my friends call me Debbie. I’m a writer too. My pen name is ‘Doobie’.
Read Chapter I by Budman in the last issue of BB, Sept-Oct 2015.
“Sure thing.” I said. “Tell me more about that magazine you write for. I’d like to hear the details.” Debbie/Doobie went on to tell me that her great grandfather had known the original Editor of Behind Barz Magazine, a very long time ago. Indeed, her Grandfather had too, and requested that his son name his first daughter Deborah. When the original Doobie retired, she gave control of the magazine to the staff, who were also her friends. Somewhere along the way the magazine went national, and then global. In the very beginning, Behind Barz was rarely found outside of motorcycle shops. But as it was distributed to more mainstream places, like insurance agencies, country stores, and some restaurants, average people began to look at the men & women who live the motorcycle life in a different light. Articles of Veterans groups riding their motorcycles in funerals to honor a person they never met touched Americans. Stories of bikers showing up for a benefit ride to raise money for a sick child’s medical treatment put the motorcycle community in a new light for people who didn’t understand the patches & tattoos. The photos and stories of Chewy the Biker Dog really got to American’s hearts. Doobie explained how Chewy the Iron Butt Mutt had attended so many ‘last rides’ for Fallen Soldiers & military Veterans that his final resting place was in a National cemetery. He was buried with honors. The same Veteran groups he rode with gave him a 21 gun salute.
I’m pretty sure my lower jaw hit the top of my boots. She went on….”My great-granddad had a Dyna like that one there. I’ve seen pictures of it. Granddad took tons of pictures. His even had a Behind Barz sticker on it, just like that one. That’s weird.” Of course, she was talking about my Dyna. It took a while for the light bulb to come on, but I finally realized that I was standing, 100 years in the future, talking to my own great-granddaughter. My head was beginning to spin. Thank goodness for Suicide Sue. Her training & experience as a Registered Nurse really paid off. After giving me a slap across the face that rattled my teeth, she said “Snap out of it meathead! You look like you’re going to faint.” The truth is, I was! “So…Debbie, who do you write for?” I asked. “Behind Barz Magazine, of course.” She said. “Best motorcycle enthusiast magazine in the world! I’m a regional Editor. If its okay with you guys, I’d like to put these photos of your bikes in the next issue.”
Chewy’s descendants still ride; some are mascots of the Patriot Guard Riders, American Legion Riders, and even the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. Since everyone can’t have a dog from Chewys bloodline, there are lots of other different breeds of dogs named Chewy who sit behind their drivers. She said that the original Chewy would be proud. His driver thought it was quite an honor for his furry little friend. Suffice it to say, that I was amazed. How one little magazine had changed the world. I grabbed a copy off the rack in the shop & looked through it. There were still stories of riders from long ago. Trailblazers who had punched through the stereotypes & made a difference, and still articles about friends helping friends, bikers helping strangers, and all of us having fun on motorcycles. I looked at the front cover, and even a hundred years later, it was still FAH-REE! I felt a tap on my shoulder, and turned around. There stood a monster of a man with an unkempt beard, long hair & massive arms covered in tats. “Hi. I’m Brain.” He said as he gave me a warm hug. “I’ve been expecting you.” Someone said you should never judge a book by its cover!

4th Annual
Lupus Foundation poke After a week of continuous thunderstorms, hardy bikers from Fayetteville and surrounding areas, braved the threatening weather and rode under cloud covered skies to donate their time and money for a worthwhile cause. On 12 September, The Lupus Foundation of North Carolina once again received assistance from the biker community with $3,100 raised with a poker run and auction. Deborah Losoya, the Facilitator for The Lupus Support Group, was on hand for the event and for the first time, rode in the event, getting an inside look on how a poker run works. Pam Griffen, a wonderful supporter who owns Louies Pub, hosted the event. It was the first and last stop of the Poker Run, and chow was provided to the participants. The other stops were 22 Klicks, Crazy Ds, and the Doghouse. The Lupus Foundation has been making great strides in North Carolina, and have gone through several changes in the past year. Information, like any other illness, is key to winning the battle. There is a support system in Cumberland County staffed with volunteers who work for the Lupus Foundation. Their website is: www.Lupusnc.org and can be reached at 877-849-8271. Deborah Losoya and Detria Adkins Burger are both Coordinators and Facilitators for the Lupus Foundation. Deborah Losoya can be reached at: dlosoya245@yahoo.com. The Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter can be found on Facebook. Stop in and check out their page, it is a wealth of information and contact numbers. The Cumberland County Support Group meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 6 pm to 7.30pm at the Berkshire Hathaway Real-estate Company. Everyone is welcome to come and attend their meetings for education and support. There is a quarterly meeting which consists of speakers, doctors, and patients dealing with the problems of Lupus. The doctors come from Duke and Chapel Hill. Every year there is a

er run major symposium given in Charlotte, NC in October. The dates can be found on the Facebook page. The 7th Annual Walk to End Lupus Now was recently held, and the next walk is scheduled for 14 May 2016. The auction was a great success because of donations made by local businesses. The donators included, but were not limited to: Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson, Hooters Fayetteville NC, Hot Hog Leather; Hog Country LLC, M & M Leather, Valhol Vapors, Pinky's Chop Shop, Blackstone Steakhouse, Shooting Star Tattoo, Smokin Guns Tattoo, Fire & Ice Tattoo, Elite Tattoo, Baker American Cycles and John Humphries. Laura from The American Sisters won the poker run with the highest hand; a flush. Nobody but bikers would come out in bad weather and expose themselves to the elements voluntarily to support those in need. As such, we would like to thank, in alphabetical order, the bike clubs that participated, as they provided the lion’s share of riders: American Sisters, Confederate Riders, Infidels, Nam Knights, Silent Heroes, Section 8, Southern Riders, Veterans, Vietnam Veterans, and the Wingmen. I want to thank you personally for fighting the good fight.

Robert E. Lee Day
Robert E. Lee Day at Tippett’s Mill in Zebulon, N.C.
The 3rd Annual Robert E. Lee Celebration was a huge success, even despite the heavy deluge of rain throughout the day. The annual event is to honor the life and legacy of one of the greatest generals in American history. This day was also a very special day for two wonderful people, Wayne and Penny, who said their vows and tied the knot overlooking the lake. The day started at 8:30am with the Boxcar Races, followed by the wedding at 12:30 and then the Blue Flame Band took the stage at 3pm. All day long, the 13 NC Latham’s Battery shot off the cannon and even had a night fire. If you have never experienced this, I can tell you that it is totally amazing visually and every sinew in your body feels the vibration of the gunpowder exploding as the recoil of the barrel bounces back!
13 NC Latham’s Battery
Blue Flame Band
At 3pm The Blue Flame Band took the stage and rocked, I mean ROCKED the crowd! They are one heck of a band that plays various Southern Rock songs including Skynyrd. Bill, owner of Tippett’s Mill cooked BBQ plates all day long. There were also a few vendors on hand. Bobby had his tap shoes on and danced on the table. He also played a few chords for the crowd on his harmonica.
Bobby and Penny having a blast dancing on the table!
Despite the rain, everyone pulled together and made the R. E. Lee Celebration a huge success! Congrats to Wayne & Penny on your wedding and may you forever be on your Honeymoon! Stop by Tippett’s Mill while out riding. It’s a beautiful setting with great folks who treat you like family. See their ad on page 7 in this issue.

11 November 2015
History of Veterans Day World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”
40
In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"
Armistice Day became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

Duke Children’s Hospital Charity Ride
On September 5th 2015, Oglaigh na Heireann (Translated means Warriors of Ireland) conducted our first Duke Children’s Hospital Charity Ride. We left out from Tir Na Nog in Raleigh, NC and rode out to Duke Children’s Hospital. We went around the parking garage in front of the hospital and headed back to Tir Na Nog with 15 bikes and one lonely car.
story & photos: Bobby Irish President Oglaigh na Heireann MC
Tir na Nog served a great Irish breakfast before the ride which was included in the price of the entry fee. We had a raffle drawing and a 50/50 drawing. The pub donated a few shirts and a couple of gift cards, and the local HD shop donated a 1 day free rental which was worth $350. After everything was said and done, we raised little over 1,000 dollars. Now, the reason for the ride...10 years ago on September 1st, my son, Christian, was born with Spina Bifida at Duke. The second day of his life started his surgeries and everything else that came with it. On the 4th Day of his life he had a Shunt installed to relieve the fluid on his brain. He spent the first 30 days of his life at Duke and I thank them for saving his life. So, this ride we put on was in honor of him as close to his birthday as I could get. He did not know about this ride and so I wanted to surprise him with this donation in his name to the hospital that helped him be here today!

Art of the Pick
Book Review
By Mike Wolfe photo and review by Vinney Pickers
Art of the Pick, by Mike Wolfe. Mike has been a picker all of his life, starting when he was a little boy. In Art of the Pick he brings together some of his collection, including motorcycles! Here you will find killer photographs of classic motorbikes, advertising signs, classic tricycles and beloved toys of children from long ago. I cannot even begin to explain the photography on these pages! I could not put it down until I had read and drooled over every single page! We want to thank Mike Wolfe for sending us his book and the opportunity to do this book review. This has been one of the most interesting book reviews we have done to date! Most of all, I want to thank Mike for his title of “Picker” and what it is he actually does. Up to the time that his show, American Pickers, first aired, hardly anybody knew what a “Picker” was. Now, thanks to Mike, everybody knows what a picker is and does!
