Editorz Notez October was a tough month for our friends and neighbors...Hurricane Matthew made sure of that! This devistating storm did a number on NC with many residences and businesses under water for days and even entire towns! Twenty-six people lost their lives in NC, two in VA., and five in SC. Continued prayers to everyone dealing with the horrors that Matthew unleashed! It will take quite a while to get back to some normalcy. So many people were effected all up and down the southeastern US as well as, the Bahamas, Cuba and Haiti. Because of the storm many events were postponed or cancelled, altogether. Please check our EVENTZ listing in this issue or on our website: www.BehindBarz.com for a full listing of EVENTZ near you. Thank you to all of our advertisers for making this magazine possible! Please let them know you saw their ad here on these pages!!! Because of them BB Mag is a Fah-Ree publication! On a side note, today I had a visit witj my Oncologists office at Duke for my annual check-up. All went well. This was my ten year anniversary! When I was sick the biker community rallied around me (and Vinney), visited me in the hospital, built me a wheelchair ramp, prayed with me and for me, sent me cards of encouragement, gave me rocks (that I still have to this day!), and held benefits for me! You guys and gals were my cheer leaders and pep talkers and you were and are the epitome of what a “true biker” is! Because of you guys we do this magazine! Not because we are bikers, not because we ride but because of you, our biker family! Thank you for always being there for us! We will continue to be there for you! Vinney and Doobie

nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes Our troops will be working in some very cold environments so we need cold weather items for our troops. We need: hand and foot warmers, twin size flannel sheets, thermal underwear, olive green boot socks, coffee, teas, hot chocolate, instant soup mixes. Here’s an idea for a Christmas project for churches, schools, civic groups, bike clubs: Make goody bags for our care packages going to troops. Collect small individually wrapped snacks like granola bars, Slim Jims, small packs of nuts, trail mix, sunflower seeds, wrapped Rice Krispy Treats, small boxes of raisins, cranberries, individual wrapped packets of drink mixes to add to bottled water, hot chocolate. Organize a packing day where items are opened, and about 6-10 snacks are packed into a sandwich bag. Add a card with a message to put in the sandwich bag, along with a small ornament. The holiday decorated bags are a nice touch. Have a donation box for financial donations to help with postage.
6
These sisters collected donations from friends to purchase items to make 340 bags of “sunshine” to send to our troops. They enlisted friends to help with the cards. This was a fun way to show appreciation for our troops while easing the boredom of summer!
Stockings filled with goodies are always fun to receive!
Please email or call us for more info. Thank you so very much for your continued support!

3rd anniversary party
Oct. 15th, 2016 Bailey, NC Dixie Steel MC clubhouse The weather was perfect for the 3rd anniversary party the Dixie Steel MC held for their new clubhouse. DSMC President Grumpy greeted me when I arrived then introduced me to the members as he explained that they are a family oriented club. Everyone was cordial and happy to show me how they converted an old barn into a beautiful and unique clubhouse. A 10’ Jon boat full of ice held cold drinks and they had two grills going, a small one for wings, hot dogs & sausage, and a large one cooking up chicken for dinner. After dinner was time for a 50-50 drawing and door prizes. The DSMC had live music by the awesome Big River Band as guests arrived from the Tuscarora MC, Ghost Riders MC, Bikers for Christ, and Frog Level MC. I want to thank the Dixie Steel MC for making me feel welcome, President Grumpy for his courtesy, and Goose, Jewell & Eyes for some good conversation. I hope to see you all again. story & photos: Blue Star Bud

"Best of the Best"
Enjoying the great food... Blue Star Bud, Becky & Super Dave
Some of our favorite eateries!
These are some of our favorite restaurant eats...and some of our favorite foods from those places. The Behind Barz Crew has been all over tasting some of the South’s best foods! Skylight Inn Ayden, NC I met Beth and Ernie Byrd in Ayden, NC today so we could have lunch at the Skylight Inn. When I Googled the Skylight I found that it actually has very high national ratings. It deserves them too! The BBQ is cooked over wood, and a fellow with Hulk Hogan arms chops up the meat right behind the front counter. The owners keep the cost of their food extremely reasonable by serving the BBQ and slaw in rectangular paper ‘bowls’ usually reserved for serving french fries. A large piece of cornbread comes with the meal, which you eat with a plastic fork. Our pineapple cake came in a small Styrofoam box, making it easier to carry home if you so choose. This restaurant is all about the food, and it was positively the best BBQ I’ve ever had, and I live in Wilson. If you enjoy wood cooked BBQ with a smoky flavor, take a ride to Ayden and check out the Skylight Inn.
Dawgg’s Restaurant Wilson, NC On a sunny Friday morning I decided to have breakfast at Dawgg’s Restaurant which is right across the street from the Wilson Op’s Ctr. and the big old blue water tower on Herring Ave. / Rt. 42 by Highway 301. This is my 3rd time eating at Dawgg’s and today’s breakfast was outstanding! Miss Leigh Ann brought my food outside to the patio area and it was a real home-cooked meal. The inside of Dawgg’s is a tad ‘cozy’ for me, so I sit outside where I can enjoy the warm Wilson weather & keep an eye on my scooter. The parking lot is large enough to accommodate lots of vehicles, but it’s gravel, so exercise a bit of caution if you ride your bike. Everything I ordered was just as good as it looks in the picture, the coffee wasn’t wimpy, and I left as full as a fat baby’s diaper. Be sure to grab a cookie or 2 on your way out. I’ve had the chocolate-chip & peanut butter ones, they’re home-made & supersized, you’ll love ‘em. Blue Star Bud

Chico’s Mexican Restaurant Rocky Mount, NC I had lunch on a Thursday at Chico’s with my friends Bob Wilber and Brenda, and everything was amazing. Our server Miss Kay brought our chips & salsa, took our drink orders, then came right back with our drinks & took our food orders. Brenda & I shared a huge Fiesta Fajitas for two, and Bob had a Taco / Burrito combo. While we were enjoying our delicious food, Mr. Todd Warren, the owner of Chico’s came by our table for a short visit. Even though I was as full as a fat baby’s diaper, I still had to have the fried ice cream desert. It comes in an edible cinnamon flavored bowl, is covered with honey, with whipped cream & a cherry on top. Save room for one when you go there. Our food was served promptly, and steaming hot by Kay, our drinks were cold, and we’re looking forward to going back again. your Health Behind Barz MUSCLES Muscles are in all of us. We use them every day to move, to ride, to walk, and to smile. Here are some interesting muscle facts for you…
Now Did You Know????? There are muscles attached to the roots of your hair…that is what helps gives you goose bumps. It takes about 17 muscles to smile and about 42 muscles to frown. The hardest working muscle is in the eye. The biggest muscle is the gluteus maximus…your behind. Muscles weigh about 40% of the weight of your body. Tendons hold the muscle in place. Every human body has 650 muscles and 187 joints. Muscles work in pairs. Muscles work to maintain your posture. There is smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. Masseters or chewing muscles are the strongest in the human body. Muscles work in a certain way just contract, that is tighten up, and relax…that’s all. Muscles can only pull they cannot push. Muscles are bundles of cells and fibers. Joints need to move to get nutrition; light exercise may help decrease muscle pain. We are truly wonderfully made. Each of us is special. If you have any kind of muscle pain, please go see your doctor to help you. Sooo move them muscles, keep them eyeballs moving, rest on your gluteus maximus as you ride safe and smile!

why i ride Gone With The Wind Name: Marian McConnell Location: Catawba, Virginia My motorcycle: 2013 Softail Deluxe “Scarlett O’Harley” Contact cell phone: 540.309.4707 MARIAN AND SCARLETT O’HARLEY Riding brings me joy, and fills me with an incredible feeling of empowerment. I started riding as a passenger behind my husband in 2003. We rode all over the USA from our home in the mountains of Virginia. I fell in love with the motorcycle world, and it changed my life. There’s so much more to riding and the biker world than I ever imagined! I am an adventurous person (I’m also a caver and we own a famous cave called the “Murder Hole” -- I’ve written a book about it and just finished a movie documentary about it); but motorcycles are my biggest passion. To be a better passenger I took the MSF course and the minute my hand twisted the throttle on that little 250cc bike in the class, I was hooked! So, I bought my first bike in 2005; a used 2003 Yamaha 650cc VStar; I was 51. Living in the mountains of Virginia made it easy to learn the basics in the parking lot of the local civic center, and then on the back roads. After putting almost 12,000 miles on my little trusty steed, (and learning about counter-steering the hard way by going down a 6-foot embankment and surviving), I traded up to a 2010 950 Yamaha V-Star. After putting over 16,000 miles on it, I bought my ultimate dream bike in 2013; a 2013 Softail Deluxe, “Scarlett O’Harley” (because we love to be gone with the wind!
So now I’m 61 and riding continues to be my passion. Facebook is a great way to meet other bikers, and there are many great groups (such as Virginia Lady Riders) to share stories, photos, events, and meet up for rides. I belong to the Free Masons Riding Club Ladies Auxiliary, as well as the Roanoke Ladies of Harley. My bike is my “mechanical soul mate” and I’ve even written a song about her!
Scarlett and I have ridden over 17,000 miles so far, and I look forward to riding the next 100,000! I ride every time I get a chance, year ‘round, and we do at least two “big” rides every year; usually to Maggie Valley, NC (we love the “Wheels Through Time” museum and have ridden the Dragon) and the Ozark Mountains in northwestern Arkansas.

ll over the US and Canada there were over 379 Motor Maids plus 135 guests headed for Santa Fe, N.M., for our 76th Convention. We had 73 red ribbons there, first time to Convention. Mileage just for the Motor Maids was 728,479 touring miles; direct miles 484,148. Total miles were 1,212,627 miles. Yes, we do love to ride! On June 24th I left for Kim’s home in Farmville, VA so we could be on the road by 5:30 Saturday morning. She had the route laid out, so I went with her after Sammie couldn’t go. She added some stops that I wanted to do and cut a couple of hers. That was a nice thing to do. Our first night was Nashville, TN, 538 miles. After cooling off and calling Goldie, we walked up the road to eat a good dinner, back for a shower and to bed early. For the next day, it was another 531 miles to Fort Smith, AK. Day 3 we stopped in Oklahoma City to see the memorial they had built for the people killed in the bombing. It was a green hillside with chairs in rows, small ones for the children, their names on each chair. There is a lot more to see, you need to go there. It was very … I don’t know the word to use on how I felt. That night we stayed in Tucumo, NM, another 525 mile day. Day 4 we rode 534 miles to William, AZ, just outside the Grand Canyon. We had dinner in an old Steak House. It had been in business since the late 1800’s. There has been only three owners, the last two working there learning for years. The food told the story of why. Great! We stayed two nights, riding in to the Grand Canyon the next morning. On her bucket list was to ride the rim of it, lots of stops to walk to and look over this beautiful place. We didn’t make it all the way for a bad lightning storm and heavy rain for 1.5 hours. After the lightning stopped the rain was light so off we went so we would get back to William before dark. On our way out we saw two large elk by the road. Now you know why we wanted off the road by dark. Number 2 off her bucket list. This was our turning around point. We did a lot of stopping on and off of Route 66 that made me think of Rose and Donnie a lot. We took pictures at the ‘standing on the corner’ sign in Winslow AZ (this is a cool stop). On to the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert… this national park was established in 1906 to protect one of the world’s largest and most colorful deposits of petrified wood. The fossil record contained in this 225 million year old geologic layer called the “Chimle formation” allowed a fascinating look at the fauna and flora of the late Triassic Period. This colorful scaliment, also known as the Painted Desert, spans the 28 mile journey through the park. I have been there twice and would go back. There we met 3 ladies headed to Vegas. So much laughing, I told them they were having way too much fun and had to take us. They said they had left the husbands home in CA and they were going to have a ball. I bet they did!

Continued from page 19... The next stop was less than 400 miles to stay two days in Albuquerque, NM. We rode to Taos, NM. It is home to the country’s oldest Pueblo community, also the highest peak in NM. We walked around seeing how they built their homes, talking to some and seeing their wares that were for sale. We rode back on a beautiful two lane country road along a river. Leaving there it was on to Roswell to see if we could see any little green men. There was a street event going on and you couldn’t move. The line to the museum was long; it was in the high 90’s. Got a picture of me with a little green man and left. No flying objects to see this time. While taking back roads to White Sands, NM we saw a sign for breakfast at a firehouse. We were getting hungry so we stopped to eat. The lady was the fire chief’s wife and the fire truck was parked outside. We stayed for over two hours talking to her, the chief and their 9 year old son. They had a board with firehouse patches on it. Kim told them they needed to start a new one with police patches. She gave them one of her State Trooper’s patches, also one when she was Chief of the Troopers at our State Capital in VA. I have an Anchorage, Alaska police patch to send them. I did a radio show in Cody, Wyoming in 2010 and the host gave me one of his Dad’s. The son wanted us to go see Lincoln. It is the town where Billy the Kid hung out. So off we went, with all 3 waving goodbye. It is a nice quiet town with a large museum, a couple of stores and old homes there. Not like the town the President at the time called the meanest town in the USA. We got to White Sands in time for dinner and to finish watching the car races. The next morning early we headed to White Sands National Monument Park. It is beautiful. White Sands is known for its gleaming white gypsum sand that has built up into an extraordinary landscape of dunes up to 60 ft. high. It is an eight mile ride on a sand road, total getting to and from the welcome center is 25 miles. Something to see but take your sunglasses. Kids can slide down the dunes. There are horseback riding and hiking trails. I was surprised they would let you do that. Again, more back roads. This time we both got worried about gas. Then there were two just in time and no more until Santa Fe. In the hot desert you worry a little. When I got to the hotel in Santa Fe my friend Ginny was waiting for me. After unloading my bike, I parked it saying no more until I left. But we got them out to ride to the HD shop 7 miles across town. After that we walked everywhere. What a beautiful town. We had lunch one day on a balcony overlooking the town square. They had a festival in the square, music, fancy dress, crafts. The Native Americans were lined up and down the wall in a walkway selling their jewelry. Beautiful. We had our meeting, parade, road run and parties, always a lot of fun, and talking with friends you only see once a year. At the dinner the last night, I was given my Silver Life Card. This year I got my 25 year card from the Motor Maids, 500,000 mile patch from HOG, and have had a lot of fun doing it. Maybe I will get my Golden Life Card (50), and my million Mile patch. Who knows? I would only be 101 years old. Gloria is still riding at 91; I can do that. Back home a week, and off to our Dresser Rally in Fairmont, WV.

CVMA State Meeting
Over 150 members of the NC Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association came to Southern Pines, NC for our annual State Meeting this weekend. On Friday night we had an informal get-together with a steak dinner, and on Saturday we attended the meeting, then rode to Rockingham Speedway with a police escort.
Southern Pines, NC story & photos: Blue Star Bud
Our meeting started off with active duty Army S/Sgt. Gregg from Ft. Bragg, NC singing our National Anthem, and a ‘patching in’ ceremony of 7 new members. Our Regional Representative ‘Spanky’ was there, and our new State Representative Jim Beck ‘Sheriff’ accepted his new job. Conspicuous by their absence were our former State Rep. Ken Briles ‘Trigger’ and his lovely wife Phyllis ‘Shug’, but we hope to see them with us in the future. ‘Harley Rose’ was our Auxiliary State Rep., but now the job has been passed on to Beth Carroll ‘Gadget Girl’. We all wish ‘Sheriff’ & ‘Gadget Girl’ the best of luck in their new positions. The NC CVMA has 7 active Chapters across the state, and all were represented at the meeting by Chapter Commanders & members, alike. The 2 largest Chapters in our state are NC 15-1 (The Mother Chapter in NC) from the Fayetteville, NC area and NC 15-6 from the Raleigh / Garner areas. Even though all of the Chapters support each other by attending rides, events & meetings, the annual State Meeting is always the Family Reunion/Homecoming event everyone wants to make. I’d like to thank some of my Brothers / Sisters / Friends for their hugs & handshakes; Marky-Mark, Tonya Martin, Big E., Pink, JC, Mark Yarnell, Fury, Butterfly, Chief Gunz, The Amazing OB1, Spanky, Tuk, Maddawg, .45, Dog Man, Mac, Hercules Boxer, Little Mama, Jed, Big-Nut, Muleskinner & Sweetpea, Nikko, Night Stalker, Ronin, Stubbs, Doc, Root (Semper Fi), Stinger, Z, Sully, Sully, Tapeworm, Atomic, Yankee, Trophy Husband, Mac, Bear & Honey, ATM, Sheriff & Flip Flops, Vader & Mamasita, Big Mac, Masterblaster, Gunny, JW, Gadget Girl, Legba, and more. ALL IS WELL

he last words friends and family heard from Steven “Bigun’ Harris, for in the early morning of August 27th he lost his battle with cancer. Bigun was one of those fun loving guys that loved family, friends and his brothers from Tuscarora MC. A member of the Club for 13 years he spent 4 of those years as President. Shortly before becoming President of Tuscarora, 3 years ago, Bigun married his best friend Alana Buck and was planning their future together with his new step daughter Mackenzy Buck. The future for the couple was bright and life was a dream for shortly after the couple found out they were expecting. However, sadly, it wasn’t long before they found out that Bigun had cancer. The family went on the offensive to beat this horrid disease. At one point all Bigun could think about was being able to be there to see his little girl Morrigan Harris be born, which he was. The fight continued and sadly, our friend succumbed. On August 31, 2016 friends and family gathered together at the Free Gospel Church in Shine, NC to pay their last respects to their friend, their brother and comrade as he was laid to rest. Motorcycle Clubs from all over NC came to offer their condolences to Alana, Mr. and Mrs. Harris (Bigun’s parents) and his daughters. As the parking lot filled up the iron steeds glistened side by side in rows of 3 filling the parking lot up forcing many to park in an adjoining lot. The auditorium filled up just like the parking lot with well over 350 mourners and 163 motorcycles in the parking lot. The roar of motorcycles erupted as Bigun was escorted by all his fellow bikers to his final resting place in Snow Hill, NC. The mourners were asked to return to the church after the graveside service to sit down for a meal with the family. For although our friend, Alana’s husband, Mackenzy and Morrigan, and his parents were now left to carry on without him in the flesh…All is Well for there is no pain, no sadness, no fighting for it is all gone for Bigun. He now rides a new Harley on streets of gold with all that have gone ahead of him.
All is Well Bigun, All is Well, until we meet you again on those golden streets in the clouds All is Well.

Chapter TEN X The Prince of Darkness “Ozzy?” I exclaimed with no small degree of surprise in my voice. “What are you doing here? To be sure you’re not THE prince of darkness!” “Of course not,” Ozzy explained. “I just run the show when the boss is on vacation. It seems that he didn’t particularly like me calling myself ‘the prince of darkness’ on Earth, so he let me off with a warning and I have to fill in while he’s gone. It’s not so bad really, gets me away from the bloody family for a while. Sometimes Sharon and Kelly can really get on me nerves.” He said with that unique English accent of his. “Well sir, out of idle curiosity, where does the ‘boss’ go for vacation?” I asked. “The bloomin’ USA!” Ozzy replied. “He likes to run for President during election years. Sometimes he even wins!” “That certainly explains a lot.” Sue said. “As much as we’d love to stay and chat,” I went on. “We’re here on a mission and then we’ll be on our way, if that’s okay with you.” “I know all about why you’re here,” said Ozzy. “The Oracle let me know you were coming.” Again with the Oracle! What’s the deal with that guy? I wondered. “I’m actually glad to see you three, that guy you’re here to rescue has been quite the jolly pain in my neck. We’ll all be glad to get rid of that bloke. Good riddance, I say!” Ozzy told us. “Why?” I asked. “What makes this guy so special?” Ozzy explained. “All he does day and night is run around screaming “I’m innocent. I don’t belong here. I’m a victim. I want to go home.” “It gets really annoying hearing him whine and cry all the bloody time.” “Honestly,” I said, “I’d think you’d get a lot of that around here.” “Oh sure we do.” Ozzy replied. “All the time, but it just so happens that this bloke is right, he really doesn’t belong here. We can’t torment him like the rest; all we can do is chase him around on our bikes.”
24
story: Bud Dunlap “Speaking of bikes,” I said “What’s with all the cool British iron we’ve been seeing?” “The boss said I could make myself at home, when I’m here running the show.” Ozzy explained. “And I’m fond of classic Brit sleds, I have quite a collection topside. Most folks don’t realize that. Now…let’s get that fellow you want.” “Oy, Bob.” Ozzy shouted to a nearby dragon who was just hanging around watching from the sidelines. “Go fetch that nervous whiner-baby from the first level, and bring him here.” Bob the dragon lifted his head, belched a plume of fire into the air, apologized, and said something about Mexican food with jalapeños then flew off into the dark sky.

“Well, thanks Ozzy.” I said. “It’s been a real hoot meeting all y’all and we’ll have to do this again real soon.” Sure, I was lying through my teeth, but what would you do? “Not so fast chappies.” Ozzy snarled. “We’re all glad to be shed of that bloke, but you three have seriously upset some of me lads. When you knocked them about on your way in here, you hurt some feelings, offended them and showed disrespect. Now, some reparation is going to need to be made if you want to leave here unscathed. You know what they say about payback being a nasty mistress!” I slipped into my survival mantra, the one I usually use when I spot flashing blue lights in the rearview mirror. Think fast, think fast, dang it…think faster than that! About the time I was resigning myself to a heated chase with a bad ending; Sue jumped up and said “How would you guys like some way cool T-shirts and stuff?” I’d forgotten all about those goodie bags that the Derelicts Riders had given us. So, I dismounted my sled and pulled the bag-o’-stuff out of my backpack, while Zeke did the same.
art: Tabatha Ferrell I noticed, with a bit of trepidation how the same demons that we had plowed through on the highway to here were arriving and forming a circle around us. They didn’t look especially happy either. I glanced over at Sue and Zeke, and they both shot me worried looks. This situation had the potential to get ugly. In due time, Bob came back with the CIA agent clinging tenuously to the dragon’s scaly neck. The man was wild-eyed and looked terrified. I know many of us have ridden on the Tail of the Dragon in Deals Gap, but this poor guy was riding on an actual dragon, so I guess he had a right to be scared. The agent clambered down off of Bob the Dragon and sprinted over to the three of us, hopped up behind Sue and hung on to her for dear life. Everybody wants to ride with Sue.
Now, honestly, I didn’t think there was a snowball’s chance in where we were that any of these items were actually going to fit those monsters. Here were the things that go bump-in-the-night lining up for hats, T-shirts and I didn’t know what all, and the chances of any of it fitting them were remote in the extreme. First to approach me was the giant Tasmanian Devil. “How about a nice Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson shirt there Sport?” I asked. “Yeah sure.” He replied. Much to my wonderment, as I was pulling the shirt out of the bag, it kept getting bigger and bigger, until it was a super-ultra extra large that fit the beast perfectly. Amazing! “Hey thanks mate.” The hugeish marsupial said. “Be sure to say ‘Hi’ to old Burt Monroe when you see him. Tell him Taz wishes him good luck on the salt.” “Sure will.” I said. “Be happy to.” And so it went. We kept pulling hats and shirts from Myrtle Beach H-D, CycleMax, Hometown H-D, plastic cups from the Lanier Law Group, key chains from the Biker Barn, blue Frisbees from the folks at HensonFuerst Attorneys, cool stickers from Pipe Dreams Custom Cycles and of course, lots of copies of Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine!

TANK FULL OF TIME Chapter TEN continued... I could see that the demon guards were somewhat assuaged with our gifts, but they sure weren’t grinning like monkeys yet. We were still in hot water. It was Zeke to the rescue. Even though our bottomless goodie-bags were refilling themselves with all sorts of spiffy gifts, Zeke decided to look in his saddle bags and see if he had anything else. Being the kind of guy who likes to be prepared, he had stashed several bottles of Fainting Goat Brews and some ice packs for our trip to the underworld. When the demons, zombies and denizens of the dark saw those nice cool FGBs, they went ballistic with joy! As soon as Zeke started tossing the brown bottles of tasty Fainting Goat What the Buck into the cheering throngs, his saddlebag kept refilling itself with more bottles of Fainting Goat. That was a good thing too, since by now more creatures were showing up on their bikes to see what all the commotion was about. Witches were flying in on brooms, vampires started arriving on café racers, and indeed a pack of werewolves on choppers were pushing their way through the crowd to grab some frosty Fainting Goat Horny Honey Wildflower Wit. Even in the underworld they had Mods and Rockers! Yep, they all loved the Stiff Leg Belgian Tripel and the Udder Brother Pecan Maple Porter! It was really beginning to look like an extravagant ‘gay Christmas’ party, otherwise known as Halloween! When Sue popped open her saddlebags, she found them filled with bottles of Sturgis Shine, from the great folks at BLACK HILLS DISTILLERY, in South Dakota. The Apple Bliss and Amber Shine were a huge hit with the still gathering conglomeration of nightmarish creatures. I’d once heard a story in Sunday school, back in the distant days of my youth, about the multitudes being fed with a few loaves of bread, and a couple of fish. That was an example of Divinity, and while Sue, Zeke and I always tried to do the right things, we were….ah…nowhere near that level of Grace! As the party raged on, and the din grew louder, I happened to glance upwards, into the darkness and I saw a cloud passing by. In that cloud I could see the Angel Tal’ Tanya looking down at us, while giving a wink and a ‘ thumbs-up’!
32 26
Behind her were Spirit Chewy and Martin, both smiling, with knowing looks that we did indeed, have some friends On High, looking out for us. Of course all good things must come to an end and Ozzy was that end. “Wot in the bloody bollocks is going on around here?” He shouted. “Who’s running the store? Back to work with the lot of you wankers. I didn’t call for a bloomin’ block party. And remember my motto: THE FLOGGINGS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES!” With that, the crowd dispersed, but not without a great deal of muttering and grumbling. Turning his attention back to the four of us, Ozzy said “I hope you’re happy. Now they’ll be wanting a party every week!” “Sorry Ozzy.” I said, “How about if we buy a boatload of your CD’s once we get home? Will that put things square with you sir”? I can lay it on pretty thick when I need to. “Just point us in the right direction and we’ll be….outtahere!” “Not to worry mates.” Ozzy said. “I can send you back in the blink of an eye. This gig comes with a few perks. Now just tap your boots against your foot pegs or floor boards and repeat ‘There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home’.” “Really?” Zeke asked, being the somewhat gullible type at times. “No!” Ozzy laughed, and then snapped his fingers. Instantly we were surrounded in a red glitter dust as we disappeared from the underworld only to appear in the warm night air, under a streetlight near the Oracle’s house. “Wow!” Sue exclaimed. “That was intense. I thought we were in some hot water back there.” “True dat.” Zeke said. “Let’s not go back there for a while. It’s too scary.” “You have no idea what scary is.” Said the agent as he dismounted the saddle of Sue’s bike. “I’ll be in therapy for the rest of my life!” Even as we looked toward the sound of a door closing, the Oracle stepped out of his house and walked towards us. “Good job people. You got our man back. The Company will be happy about this. Speaking to the agent, the Oracle said “Now go in the house, fix a drink then call your supervisor and your family. People have been worried about you during your absence.”
behindbarz.com
The agent gave us a quick “Thanks, ‘preciate it.” Then shot into the house without another word. “Okay folks, take some time off and resume your lives. Since you did a difficult job for the agency, they’ve put you on the payroll. Direct deposit, insurance, the whole package. Keep me in the loop as to your whereabouts and possible destinations. We may have other missions for you.” No doubt, I thought. “There’s just one little thing, maybe you can help us with.” I asked. “When we travel into the past, we can’t buy anything with our modern currency. Can you possibly fix us up with some older cash and coin?” “That’s easy enough.” The Oracle replied. “I’ll have the Wizard send some to you tomorrow. When you let me know of your travel plans, I’ll have her send circa-specific monies to you. For now, I’ll just have her send you an assortment from years gone by to get you started.” And with that, we made our way to our own homes for some much needed down-time. Travelling through time, space, and alternate dimensions can really take it out of you. As Zeke and I rested over the next few days, Sue had plans of her own. She would strike out on her own adventure to meet the Motor Maids, present and past.
Our next chapter will cover The Chronicles of Sue, When Times collide. In the meantime, dear readers, ride easy and live the Behind Barz Life. No parole.

Winterville, N.C.
Scott was known by many and loved by everyone. On 15 September 2013, Scott lost his battle with cancer. The 2nd Annual Scott Eaker Memorial Ride was held at Hometown HD in Winterville. Scott was a former employee and more than that to everyone there, he was family. Many bikers, friends and family were on hand to show their support for Scott and his family. Thanks to everyone who came out in support and also thanks to those who donated their time, money and gifts for this event!

What a day! 8 October 2016 will go down in the history books, for sure! Hurricane Matthew was screaming down upon us! ...but Gary and the Crew at The Biker Barn have one event a year ~ Open House...and Matthew wasn’t screamin’ loud enough to stop it! As always, the Biker Barn has free food...and plenty of it! Bruce, George and the boys weathered the wind and rain under a shelter and through all the ferociosness grilled up over 200 pounds of porksckops, 60 pounds of chicken and 250 hotdogs for the event! There were several side dishes to choose from and numerous desserts ( 8 bannana puddings )! Over 100 people stopped by and ate. They socialized and enjoyed the raffle drawings held by Lance. Many prizes were given away. Even though it was raining cats and dogs outside the Biker Barn, inside was nice and dry with plenty of food and friends! Two folks rode their bikes in for the bike show but Travis Carter won “Best in Show”! Brave fellas! Thanks to everyone who made the day possible and a big thanks to everyone who came out in the wind and rain. The event was cut a little short so that everyone could get home safely but it was still a great event, as always! Thanks Gary and the Biker Barn Crew for all you do throughout the year for your customers!

The outdoor chapel at the YMCA Camp Greenville, called “Pretty Place,” offers a breathtaking view from the top of Standing Stone Mountain. It is a quiet, serene place of beauty that is breath taking! This is actually a YMCA summer camp but the outdoor chapel can be used a worship venue (perfect for sunrise services) or it can be used for weddings. More than 100 couples are married each year at this chapel, which is closed to the public during weddings and camp functions. So, we suggest you call ahead of time to check before going to make sure it is not reserved for an event. Visit the Pretty Place blog at www.prettyplacechapel.blogspot.com for more info on that. The view from standing outside the door of the chapel with the beautiful cross that overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains makes for one beautiful image! Inside of the rock walls of the chapel are plagues every where with a different scripture on it and each plague is in memory of someone. It tells who at the bottom of each scriptured plague. Take time to read them, they are really neat. Symmes Chapel located five miles off of US Highway 276 Cleveland, S.C. (on YMCA Camp Rd/Solomon Jones Rd.) at the SC/NC State line. It is in very close proximity to many natural recreation areas! (North of Caesars Head State Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Pisgah National Forest, Its northern property boundary is the North Carolina state line and is near Cedar Mtn, N.C.
The mountain top campus is situated at 3200 feet above sea level and includes well over 1600 acres of property. Set on the eastern ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Camp Greenville provides excellent panoramic views of the South Carolina upstate area. The camp also has a small little waterfall, a fairly large swimming lake for the campers, with a zipline across the lake and a slide also. On its southern side the camp property adjoins Jones Gap State Park and the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area – opening up thousands of additional acres for recreational opportunities. A network of easy to strenuous hiking trails in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area links Caesars Head and Jones Gap state parks. Registering with the park before using these trails is mandatory. The trails close one hour before dark, year round. There are also numerous picnic areas and great fishing spots!

Motor Maids UNO Weekend
story: Pam J. photo: Ellen T.
Motor Maids Meet in Clarksville, VA., for Uno Weekend. Know what you get when you put Motor Maids and a deck of Uno cards together? A weekend of riding, eating, telling tall tales, and just maybe a little card playing! Since the mid ’90s, the Virginia and North Carolina Motor Maids districts have been getting together every September for what has become our Uno Tournament weekend. (Don’t let the name fool you – we actually spend very little time playing cards.) These neighboring districts take turns hosting this annual event. Since last year’s event was held in N.C., the Virginia/ West Virginia District took this year’s event to the charming town of Clarksville, Va., close to the N.C. state line and overlooking the Roanoke River and John Kerr Reservoir. As it happened, our tournament coincided with the East Coast Hell’s Angels meeting in Clarksville for a “mandatory run.” The town of Clarksville was rockin’ that weekend! Motor Maids started showing up at the Magnusson Hotel on the Lake around 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Some of the ladies took a direct route from their homes, and some of them stopped along the way to visit fabric and quilt shops – a favorite pastime of several of our members, and a couple of ladies had time to make a few purchases at the local shops. A few of us had dinner at the Lamplighter, along with a few Hell’s Angels, or at the local pizza restaurant.
On Saturday, it was more shopping for some of us, while others took off on their motorcycles to explore the area. A group of us rode to Kerr Dam, did some goofing around and then headed to South Hill for lunch via a scenic route then straight down Rt. 58 to South Hill. A few of us made it back to the hotel in time to enjoy the pool for the rest of the afternoon – totally refreshing. Dinner at the Lake House Restaurant was the perfect way to wrap up the day. We loved seeing the Motor Maids who couldn’t spend the weekend with us, but were able to join us for dinner. Finally, back at the hotel – let the games begin on Saturday night! It’s Sunday morning and another great Uno Weekend comes to an end. The Hell’s Angels have roared out of town – and now it’s the Motor Maids’ turn to leave. We said our goodbyes, filled our gas tanks and promised to make it to next year’s event, to be hosted by the N.C. Motor Maids. Wonder where we are going! For more information about the Motor Maids, go to www.motormaids.org or visit the Virginia Motor Maids website at www.vawvmotormaids.com/ or the North Carolina Motor Maids website at www.ncmotormaids. com/.

Susan Woodring
Susan (Sue) was known in the motorcycling community for quite some time. She and Gary rode motorcycles for many years. We first met them at the Last Resort in Smithfield over ten years ago. They have been our friends ever since. Sue loved her family dearly and had a very special place in her heart for her grandson, Austin. He rode with Gary and Sue even when he was a little fella! Sue fought a valiant fight against cancer and never missed a day of work. We thought she had that horrid disease beaten but we were all shocked to hear that she had taken a turn for the worst and passed away on September 1st. She will be missed by all of her family and friends.
Patsy Ann Bullock
An Angel An angel lived among us, A gift from God above. She showered us with kindness And shared with us her love. She cherished every moment With the man who was her life; Walking hand in hand together, Facing life with all its strife. She loved her children dearly, Each one in a different way, Nestled close within her heart, Though, now, she’s far away. She’s gone to live with Jesus. But, she’s here with us, today, Smiling down on every one of us, And telling us she’s OK.

from the
mind of big ed I’m not going to lie, I was very discouraged over it. But Duck said, “Hey bro, your heart was in a great place.” then I thought back to a conversation Steven Shirey and I had about helping your fellow man and that God noticed your good works. Then I thought...my good works? Heck, my good works through out my life are going to look like the kernals of corn in a huge pile of dookie! HA HA HA!!!
photo: Moe
Hello you Happy Riders!!! Trying to be good to my fellow man is like cleaning the waste bucket in a crap factory. Yesterday we had a ride to go to at Spikes in Goldsboro, NC, to support an MC. While waiting for Duck ( Russell Thompson ) at the BP station at the cross roads of 70 and 111 a black man walked up and complimented my bike. I told hime, “Thank you.” as I waited...Then he asked me for a dollar. I said, “Bro I don’t carry cash on me but if you’re hungry, I’ll get you a sandwich from inside the store.” He said that was good and we both walked in. He grabbed a sandwich from the cooler and asked could he also get a drink. “Sure.” I said. As I waited at the cash register he brought back a beer. I wasn’t down with a beer but I thought to myself, whatever, and paid for it.
But it’s sad that I want to help people but the world is so messed up and you really don’t know if you’re helping or not, or if you even want to or not. Heck, I need my money just as bad as anyone else! That reminds me of the people who’s house caught on fire and I went out and asked folks to help me get them supplies. They were just as ungrateful for the stuff and then wanted me to buy thier kids Ipads and stuff...like WTF!!! My kids don’t even have that! I have a good heart from what people say. But it’s getting raw and tired of being used and it sucks because when someone that truly needs my help comes along I feel I might tell them to start kicking rocks cause I don’t give a rats a-hole. The world is starting to change me...I can feel it. I guess we live and we learn. Well, anyhow, I wanted to share this and maybe there is hope for humanity, and I hope I find it. Keep those wheels spinning and I will see you on the black top Behind Barz!
Big Ed aka 2Timer
I walked outside and he said, “Thank you.” As I kept waiting for Duck for another 7 or 8 minutes, I saw the man sitting on a curb by the car wash eating his sandwich and I noticed another black man riding a bicycle rolling up beside him. I watch as they talked but not putting too much focus on it. Then Duck arrived. I greeted Duck and as we spoke the man on the bicycle rolled up to my Harley and now he, too, started complimented my bike...Now I know what’s up. It’s safe to assume that he, too, wanted the same thing but learning my lesson about the beer for the first guy I told him thanks for the compliment and got on my sled and rolled off as I could tell he wanted to talk more.

Clever Container In July 2006, two friends – one a professional organizer, the other a stay-at-home mom – had a light bulb moment: Why not bring organizing tools and techniques to those who need it most in a format that’s both fun and informative? The idea for Clever Container was born! One thing I do not have is organization skills! So, I totally love these Clever compression container bags! They are a quality product that adds to your storage space! If you travel at all, you will want these for your luggage or your saddle bags on your motorcycle! You can pack so many more items just by using them! You simply fold your clothes to be placed in the bag. Open bag and insert them. Then roll the bag from one end to the other to get the air out. That is it! All the air is removed and your items stay wrinkle free and take up less space! They are also great for storing seasonal clothes, or if you want to tote wet items after a day at the beach, these easy-roll bags will give you the space you need without a vacuum. I do not have saddle bags on my bike so, they give me the added room to carry other things in my backpack or to pack more clothes! A set of five compression bags comes with 3 medium bags and two large. Check out Debora’s website for many more organizing items!
Great product and at a great price, too!

History of Veterans Day World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"
Armistice Day became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.
capt. bob On September 16th the Tippetts Mill family lost an incredible man. Bob Eiermann left us to be with his true love Maggie. I sat for the longest time trying to put together words for this article with much trouble. After many rewrites I realized what was wrong. Bob was a person that enjoyed just sitting and talking to people. So, with the help of customers, we figured a goodbye letter was the answer. Dear Bob, We will all truely all miss you at the Mill. Seeing you walk into the store with your Navy hat and "shiney" cowboy boots always made people shout, "BOB!!!!!" If you were not here for a few days people would always ask where you were. People enjoyed you being here. You were and will always be that big of a part of Tippetts Mill. We used to laugh so hard when people would come in and call you sir and thank you for your service. Your response was always just call me Bob. You have sat down with so many of us to just listen to our problems and offer advice. We all knew don't ask you if we did not want to hear the truth. We would always joke about putting up a sign saying “Dr. Bob is in! In turn, we got the pleasure of hearing you talk about Maggie and watch your face light up. It was easy to see that you were one of the lucky few to actually find your soul mate and true love. Many afternoons we would sit and you would talk about your kids and what they were doing. You were so proud of the work Debra did as a nurse. Proud of her time in Alaska yet worried that she was ok. She was very much like you. As you called her " Your Nurse."

Then, bringing Bob Jr. and Greg to the mill to meet everyone. You were so proud to have them here. The way you spoke of your family made them our family. We will continue to be there for them. The Mill family will miss watching you play pool especially with Bobby Driver and listening to you both give each other a hard time and talking smack. As we continue to play pool you will always be #1 on the sign up. We will dearly miss your singing. Introducing us all to Frank Sinatra and the like. In all we are going to miss you something fierce. On a personal note. Bob you have become such an important part of my life and my family. Bill, Anna, Joseph, and I will have a hard time mending the whole your leaving has made in our family. I will miss our afternoon talks. Thanks for always being there for us. I can't believe my two-step partner is gone. Damn who is going to serenade me now? You became such a father figure to me. We are sheading many tears and yes I know you would say "Give me a break, Stop that shit." We are happy you are with Maggie, but us at the Mill are left to mourn the loss of a good friend and family member so you will have to allow us some time. They are tears of laughter and joy. We will always talk of Capt. Bob stories like that canoe ride incident. So, from all of us at Tippetts Mill Goodbye friend. You will be missed. In the words of Frank Sinatra You Did It Your Way. We Love You Capt. Bob!

Never Judge A Bo Bikers are judged all the time simply because of the way they dress, their tattoos, maybe even because of their long hair and beards and certainly because they ride a motorcycle. It’s a fact of life that people sum up other people simply by the way they look. It’s not right. But if people can just look a little deeper, especially with bikers, they will find that bikers give more to society than any other group. Many would give the shirt off their back or the last dollar in their pocket to help someone else...and they do!

We are all writing our own books...the past, the present and the future is in the works. The dust jacket may be a little dirty, grungy or completely torn off but it’s what’s inside that counts! That old adage is true... Never, Ever Judge A Book By It’s Cover!

Book By Its Cover Steel Cowgirl You know that saying, “What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger!” Well this definitely holds true for this Biker chick! Meet Curve, aka Wendy Rhoades.....Until recently, Curve’s life had been a long uphill battle. Her life has been one of many struggles. She was raised in a dysfunctional family setting by her Mother and Stepfather. Her parents divorced when she was only 2 months old. She didn’t meet her biological Father until she was 32 years old. After leaving home, she lived in an abusive relationship, where she was constantly beaten and raped. When she finally got out in April 1994, she found herself alone and pregnant with her son. She went and stayed at the Royal Home Ministries until her son was born. After her son was born, she found herself on her own again. She did finally meet someone and married, but after 13 years of his infidelity, betrayals, lies, and being treated as an object and not as a human being, she decided to end the marriage in 2013. Once again, Curve was on her own. In May of 2014, Curve’s son was kidnapped, beaten, robbed, pistol whipped, run over and left in a ditch to die. Her son survived but he has permanent damage to his right leg and suffers from PTSD, but he lives life to the fullest and now has a child of his own. In May of 2016, the company where she worked at for 19 years shut its doors. The loneliness, depression and worthlessness had a tight grip on her. She was offered another position in Memphis, Tennessee, but that meant leaving her home and her family behind to start over. Before time to move, she met David Rhoades, the love of her life, in July 2015. Also in July 2015 she was surfing the web and found the Chrome Angelz RC website. Being an avid Biker, she inquired about a Chapter she could join in NC. Since there wasn’t one, Curve decided to start a Chapter in NC. She had found her purpose in life once again. The Steel Cowgirlz NC Chapter of the Chrome Angelz RC was born. She serves as President of the NC Chapter and she is also the Board Marketing Director for Chrome Angelz International RC. Curve turned Memphis down, moved to Willow Springs with David in August 2015, became engaged in November 2015 and married August 27, 2016. “The Chrome Angelz saved my life. They helped me to understand that I am somebody. I am a part of something big. A drama free, all women’s riding club. My self-confidence and self-worth had finally started to shine.” “I have learned one valuable thing about myself. You can shake me all you want, but no one can ever break ME!!!!!”

8th annual
you are not alone day
sponsored by exiled mc bracey, va. story & photos: Budman
Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 Wings Transport Bracey, VA Today I had the great privilege to see the motorcycle community at it’s best. My PGR pal, Mark Driver and I rode to Bracey, VA so we could attend the 8th You Are Not Alone Day, sponsored by the EXILED MC. For the past 8 years the Exiled MC has helped kids & adults from area families with severe medical issues by hosting a Yard Sale, Bake Sale, Poker Run & Auction. This year they did something different and original...they had a Scavenger Hunt! I spent some time with the EXILED MC President, Robbie Dunn and he graciously gave me this story. “The EXILED MC organizes this event sure, but the real credit goes to the local business’ and people from the community who generously support the You Are Not Alone Day. They helped us raise $20,000 last year, and we hope to achieve that goal this year too. Families we have helped in the past return to support the families we’re helping this year. Our motto is ‘Never let a brother or member of our community stand alone in time of need.’ You are not alone.” This year the families of Johnathan Treakle and Emberlyn Wray were surrounded by amazing folks in orange ‘You Are Not Alone Day’ T-shirts and Bikerz wearing leather vests sporting patches from many different clubs. Bikerz and supporters came from Richmond, all over VA, NC, Maryland, SC, even Salt Lake City, Utah to attend this event. A rough estimate would be that over 300 people came, and over 100 bikerz made the trip. Robbie asked me to thank some of the people who made this event such a success. Jessica Treakle, Ashley, Bruce & Everette Wray, Andy Dorrier, Clark Martin, V.P. Justin Steffrey, all the sweet people who tirelessly manned the yard & bake sale tables, the Lake Gaston Fire Dept., Papa John’s, The Pointe at Lake Gaston, Collier H-D, Wildwood Nursery, Virginia Ave. Mall, The Copper Kettle, Lucky’s Dairy Bar, Brian’s Steakhouse, Risin’ Smoke, Top This Pizza, Huddle House, Debbie’s Drive-In, Boyd Honda, Total Image Solutions, Hardee Ford, The Martin Collection, Rosemont Winery, and Whitby’s Country Store, and Behind Barz Mag! Bless your hearts!
