There is always a lot happening in the month of August. I guess it represents a lot of different things for different people! Did you know that August is “National Catfish Month”, “Admit You Are Happy Month”, “National Golf Month”? August 5th is “Work Like A Dog Day”! August 23rd is “Ride The Wind Day”...pretty cool! August 27th is “Just Because Day”...great day to do something on a whim! August has another special occasion for me. It is when I go to Duke for my annual check-up with my oncology doctor. The 4th of August is when I went this year. All tests were good and clear and this is my 8th year being cancer-free! Thank you all for your prayers! September has one of my favorite days on the 5th, “Be Late For Something Day”...great day to be a procrastinator! September 13th is “Uncle Sam Day”...his image was first used back in 1813. Check out our version of Uncle Sam on page 35. September 11th will always be a day burned in our brains! I am sure none of us will ever forget! Please continue to pray for all those who lost their lives! The third Friday in September is POW/MIA Recognition Day and it is a day of remembrance and hope for the speedy and safe return of American Prisoners of War, and those still Missing in Action. It also seeks the return of the remains of fallen soldiers. October is “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” check out page 15 for a great event going on to help fight breast cancer! October is also, “Eat Country Ham Month” ...I thought that was every month! October 20th specifically, is “National Brandied Fruit Day”... National Brandied Fruit Day celebrates sweet tasting fruit, soaked and marinated in brandy. This is a day that you have most certainly booked on your calendar, in eager anticipation. Well, it has finally arrived!. We are going to have to do a special article on this in a future issue! There are just so many special and fun days that are marked in each month of the year! BUT, No matter what day of the year ...get out there, get some wind therapy and make it your own!!! EVERY day is special and has September 3rd ~ Happy 94th meaning! Birthday to my Grandaddy, Joe!

Frank’s Place

Grand Opening

Frank’s Place had their Grand Opening earlier this year. It is located on Hwy 70 in LaGrange, N.C. Just up the road from the Sand Piper Seafood Restaurant. Frank had one heck of a shindig with live music, free food and prizes & drawings! He even had the Budweiser Girls stop in to say, “Hey,” and hang out a while!

They cooked a pig and had other homemade foods to go along with it! Mike & Todd entertained the crowd during the evening. Frank’s is open 7 days a week and he has the most attentive and friendliest bartenders in the area! If you are out ridin’ make sure and stop in for the coldest beer around! Frank’s even has a new bar shuffleboard! ...and, as always, Frank’s Place is BIKER FRIENDLY!!!

FRANK’S PLACE OPEN 7 Days A Week 2:00pm UNTIL ~ Ice Cold Beer ~

your Health Behind Barz

Depression It’s natural to feel down, sad, icky… sometimes, but if that feeling lingers day after day, it could signal depression. Depression may be severe enough to interrupt daily activities. Depression is NOT a sign of weakness. It is a health problem and is a treatable medical condition. Some symptoms of depression are a sad mood and/or loss of interest in life. Activities that were once pleasurable lose their appeal. People may feel guilty or worthless, have no hope, and may have recurring thoughts of death or suicide. Depression symptoms are sometimes linked to physical symptoms. These may be fatigue and decreased energy, not being able to sleep, early morning waking or excessive sleeping. You may have persistent aches or pains, headaches or digestive problems that do not seem to respond to treatment. Changes in appetite and weight may be another sign of depression. Some people develop increased appetite, while others seem to lose their appetite altogether. Without treatment depression can derail careers, hobbies, and relationships. Depressed people often find it difficult to concentrate and make decisions. They turn away from previously enjoyable activities, including sex. In severe cases, depression can become life-threatening. Who’s at Risk? Anyone can become depressed. Having family members with depression increases your chances of developing depression. Women are twice as likely as men to become depressed. What Causes Depression? Doctors aren’t sure what causes depression, but many feel it may be a chemical imbalance in the brain. Medications that treat depression help to improve communication between the brains cells, making them run more normally. Experts also think that stress may trigger depression. Other triggers could include certain medications, alcohol or substance abuse, hormonal changes, or even the season. How Can You Diagnose Depression? As of yet, there are no lab tests for depression. To make an accurate diagnosis, doctors rely on a person’s description of the symptoms. You’ll be asked about your medical history and medication use since these may contribute to symptoms of depression. Discussing moods, behaviors, and daily activities can help reveal the type of depression. This is a critical step in determining the most effective treatment. Therapy, medication, exercise, activities, riding with friends and talking to people are ways to deal with depression. If you just can’t fight that “down” feeling, go talk to a doctor, be examined, and find out what is going on. You are loved and cared for by your brothers, sisters and the Lord. Keep the shiny side up, rubber to the road, and be blessed!

2ND Annual Ride

in honor of Clay

Clay’s Ride and poker run on July 26, 2014 started from Stoney Creek Country Club in Goldsboro, NC. This ride and day of fun was to celebrate the life of Clay Best who passed away while riding his bike on July 28, 2012. Clay’s Ride went through Wayne County, Lenoir County, Pitt County and Greene County. A stop was made at the site of his passing to remember him with a moment of silence. Clay was a man who had the biggest heart you could ever ask for. He was funny, caring, giving and never met a stranger. He loved his family and friends. Clay would know if you needed help, someone to talk to, or someone to goof around with just by looking at you. He was a man who served his country well in the United States Air Force. He was dedicated to serving children in the community with the Shriners too. Clay had a love for hats. Clay would go places and collect hats. In remembrance of Clay, many riders had a hat on their bike. Others donned a hat that he had worn in the past in remembrance of him at each stop. At the end of the ride a scrumptious Chicken BBQ and Pig Pickin’ was held. They raised $1,712 for the Shriners Children’s Hospital. The 50/50 was won by Ed Spangler (Spanky). The best hand was won by Clifford Keck (Big Daddy). The worst hand was won by Mike Kearney (Bush). There were numerous raffle winners, too many to mention.

Brother Clay, continue to RIP, you were loved. Your family and friends will share the love you gave them.

Never Judge A Bo

Atomic Paola Ames

Bikers are judged all the time simply because of the way they dress, their tattoos, maybe even because of their long hair and beards and certainly because they ride a motorcycle. It’s a fact of life that people sum up other people simply by the way they look. It’s not right. But if people can just look a little deeper, especially with bikers, they will find bikers give more to society than any other group. Many would give the shirt off their back or the last dollar in their pocket to help someone else...and they do! We are all writing our own books...the past, the present and the future is in the works. The dust jacket may be a little dirty, grungy or completely torn off but it’s what’s inside that counts! That old adage is true... Never, Ever Judge A Book By It’s Cover!

28

www.Behind

ook By It's Cover Most often these pages tell the story of a man with tattoos, and a leather vest with lots of patches & pins. A somewhat rough looking character who in reality, has a heart of gold, and a gentle soul. A guy the straights would avoid, but bikers recognize as a solid citizen, worthy of our deep respect & affection. Well, I’m going to put a different spin on things today, and introduce all y’all to a petite lady, lovely to look at, with the smile of an Angel, and the heart of a Lion. She’s a devoted wife, mother of one, rides her own motorcycle, is a Full Member of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, and likes to jump out of airplanes. Paola ‘Atomic’ Ames is an All American woman who is stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC, works for with the Army, and is a paratrooper with the legendary 82nd Airborne Division. I’ve know Atomic for almost a year, got her to write up her own biography for me, then we sat down & I interviewed her one on one. Here’s what she wrote; “ I’m from Arizona where I enlisted into the Army in 2006 as an Intelligence Analyst. While finishing up my Advanced Individual Training (AIT) I was selected to attend Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia. My first and only stateside duty assignment has been here at Ft. Bragg, NC. While stationed at Ft. Bragg I was deployed with the 82nd CAB to Kanddahar Air Base (KAB) in Afghanistan. During my 1 year deployment I briefed and debriefed Pilots on threats and areas of interest. My first jump out of Airborne School was not until after I moved to 1BCT, in October of 2010. My scariest jump was the one after having my daughter Emily ‘ Little Miss’ Ames because of the rush of emotions and fears if anything were to happen to me. I have since been a part of the Female Heritage Jump and the D-Day Remembrance Jump which have been my favorites because of the environment surrounding the jumps. I often take a moment to reflect on how things have changed, and the sacrifices that have been made to allow myself and countless others to do what we do. “ Pretty amazing stuff for a Mom who barely breaks 5 foot high I’d say! Atomic tells me that she has made 15 jumps. To us Vietnam Helicopter Crews the idea of jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft when the ride is only half over seems a bit ‘quirky’, but we all acknowledge that it take guts, and guts is enough. This has been a busy and eventful year for Atomic. On April 1st she was promoted to Staff Sergeant. She got her 1st bike this summer, a 2011 Yamaha 650cc V-Star and was elected to be the Public Relations Officer for Chapter 15-3 of the NC CVMA.

Interviewed by: Blue Star Bud photos: Blue Star Bud

ndBarz.com

Atomic tells me that Paratrooper Analyst’s are in short supply, and being a female with those qualifications makes her even more unique. She has had weapons training with the M-4 rifle, and the ratio of women to men soldiers on Ft. Bragg is 10 to 1. Finally, she aspires to become a Jumpmaster, apply to Warrant Officer School for advanced training in her field and have another child. When I asked her “ Who is your personal hero?” she flashed that dazzling smile of hers and said “ There are too many.”

Been There, S Support Those

By: Chewy (Biker Dog)

three IronButts (“Charlie Mike!”), barfed on the saddle bags many times, happily slobbered for tens of thousands of miles, and watched my vomit smudge the windshield of a car that was following too closely on the highway. I’ve also met and rode with a few biker dogs: Jack (we were Raleigh HOG members together, and he went to be with his driver in Heaven), Snoopy (who I ride with often), Diesel (the biker bulldog from Rhode Island), and most recently, Kimi, a lady biker dog who is also a Patriot Rover.

I’m semi-retired with a lot fewer missions, but I’m still putting my tongue in the wind! I had another birfday, and for me, life is great. It sure beats the alternative of having been put to sleep if my driver had not adopted me. Birfdays have meaning to many humans, but to us dogs, if our humans remember our birfdays, it’s another day in which some try to make us feel more special. I don’t exactly understand the extra treats, but bring ‘em on! If the treats don’t agree with your furchild, I’m sure you’ll be smellin’ something a little later or you’ll be cleaning something up. When my driver adopted me, Doc Bailey estimated I was 18-24 months old. Doc Bailey and my driver backdated and estimated I was born in September. My parents decided to recognize my birfday on Labor Day weekends. Oftentimes while travelling, we meet people who tell us they “support” our military. My driver normally replies “Cool! How?” We see a puzzled look, so my driver asks “How do you support our military?” If the “cat’s” got the person’s tongue, my driver will expand his question with “Do you volunteer with the USO or other organizations? Do you donate? Do you stand with the Patriot Guard at military funerals? How do you support our service members?” That normally opens the doors for my driver to talk about the countless ways that people can support our men and women serving and those who served. More importantly, it opens the doors for us to tell them a small portion of our Testimony and talk about God and His Son. When I meet new friends at gas stations or rest areas, the three most common questions are: how long, how old, and how many? As of now, the answers are 6 – 12 – over 90,000, meaning I’ve been riding for 6 years, I’m about 12 years old (which is about 84 in dog years), and I have over 90,000 miles. During my riding years, I’ve ridden across the USA twice, took my driver on a trip to South Texas and to Florida, completed

I had the honor of attending the unveiling of the War on Terror Memorial in Holly Springs. In March, we participated in a fund raising event for this Memorial. The War on Terror Memorial was the idea of David Griffith and it was his Eagle Scout Project. In my doggy opinion, this was a huuuuuge pawject, and he had the support of the Village of Holly Springs and several veterans organizations, such as Americas Guardians, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Associations, American Legion and many, many more. My driver and I learned about it in March, but the path for us to find out about it started in May 2012. The west coast destination for my 2012 Ride Across the USA for Fallen Heroes was the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial in Irvine, CA, which my driver and I call the Iraq/Afghanistan War Memorial. We took a few close-up photos of the names on the pillars. One of those close-ups happened to be Samuel Griffith. At the time, we did not know who Sam was, where he lived, his branch of service, his rank, or any of his family members.

se Who Serve I always meet new friends at gas stations.

In June 2012, we attended a ceremony of Flags for Fallen Military honoring Lance Corporal Jeffrey Webb, USMC, of Garner, NC. At the event, we met Sam’s parents. Sam’s name was familiar, but my driver couldn’t exactly place Sam’s name. We didn’t attend his funeral, so it was bothering my driver that he couldn’t place his name. In a day or two, it came to us. We searched through the photos we took during my cross-country ride, and we found the close-up photo of Sam’s name. We didn’t know how to contact Sam’s parents, so we posted the photos on my Facebook page. Later, we met Sam’s sister, Kelly, who is with the USO. In early March, we were asked to attend the Americas Guardians’ event for the War on Terror Memorial. We weren’t sure about attending. We learned that the Memorial was David Griffith’s Eagle Scout Project, but we didn’t know David. Or did we? OB1 messaged us and said the name would come to us. I sat next to my driver and he searched the web for information. When he read that David is Sam’s brother, our jaws dropped. The night before the event, we printed a few of the pictures from the Memorial in California, including the close-up of Sam’s name. My driver and I also found a dog tag that travelled across the USA with us to the Memorial. At the event, we gave the photos and dog tag to David. I stayed close to my driver while he fought the tears, or allergies as he and many friends call it. We learned about the unveiling date for the Memorial, but we were already scheduled for a Flag Day event in Myrtle Beach. After we returned from our attempt to ride across the USA again (in which we broke down in West Virginia), we learned that the event in Myrtle Beach was not going to happen, so I decided to bring my driver to the War on Terror Memorial. At the unveiling, we left a roster of Fallen Heroes, and we gave David the flag that travelled with me to the Memorial in Irvine, CA. That flag travelled tens of thousands of miles. It’s a bit faded on one side and has a few spots on it from my slobber over the miles. These events reinforced to my parents that God is using my parents and me for His purpose, even if it takes over 14 dog years to happen.

In July, I attended a Patriot Rover fund raiser that started in High Point and ended in Greensboro. Rather than bark about the Patriot Rovers, you can get more information by checking them out at www. patriotrovers.org. I had the honor of knowing David Cantara, the Patriot Rover’s Founder, since before they were dogficially founded.

Been There, Sniffed That I also attended an event to raise funds for the USO in Jacksonville, NC, but it was rained out. My driver and I left at o’dark thirty, and we ran into lots and lots of rain. We kept rolling because we support what the USO does: They serve those who serve us! . At the rest area and gas station, a few people offered to donate when we told them about the USO, but my driver and I almost always refuse to take cash donations while on the road. We prefer that people visit the organization’s website to donate. Sometimes, we’ll accept a check if they make it payable to the organization we’re supporting. During our return home, we slowed down a lot, not because of visibility but because of the inches of standing water on the back roads. I tucked in behind my driver and as long as we were rolling, I stayed mostly dry.

4th Annual Lupus pok

Four years ago Deborah Losoya initiated a conversation with Lee Carrillo, the Wingmen National President, about helping expand her awareness base. Lee put her in touch with our then, and now, Chapter President Wayne Clow. After having a meeting with her, Wayne pitched it to the chapter and we decided to take the Lupus Foundation as one of the charity events that we sponsor. Deborah has a vested interest in Lupus as her daughter, Elaina Starnes, was diagnosed with Lupus in her senior year of high school, nine years ago. She has come down from Virginia every year to attend the event. Deborah is the Outreach Coordinator for the Lupus Foundation of North Carolina, and along with Detria Burger, are Support Group Facilitators for the Fayetteville area. In addition to the Poker Run, a Lupus Walk has been held for the last 6 years as a way to raise funding for the Lupus Foundation. Members of the Wingmen Motorcycle Club ride along with the Fayetteville Police as outriders for the walkers. The walkers have their choice of a 3 k walk or 5 k walk. The event always begins at Festival Park in Fayetteville, and this year it will be on 13 September, starting at 3 pm. Food and music are provided by the Support Group for the people that participate. Last year they drew over 1,200 walkers. These events are totally community sponsored and all funds go directly to the Lupus Foundation. This year the Poker Run began at Legends Pub and ended at The Dog House. Intermediate stops included The Backdoor, Louie’s, and Busters. The end point featured girls in bikinis washing bikes and cages. They were probably the only comfortable people in the scorching hot weather! The Dog House donated 91lbs of Boston Butts which the Wingmen cooked and prepared. Also provided were cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, and hush puppies. These sides were provided by KFC, Miss Mary’s, the Barbecue Hut, and Bruce & Mickeys. The winning hand was won by a rider named Able with an Ace high flush! The worst hand was won by a rider named Calvin. Both of these men turned their winnings back over to the Lupus Foundation. At the end of the day, a check for $1,000 was presented to Deborah and her crew at the closing ceremonies. We hope to see many of you again for the Lupus Walk in September and for the Poker Run next year. Thank you to all who rode, worked the event, and provided the chow.

~ Beware The Scam ~

By David Henson Managing partner of HensonFuerst Attorneys. Think you or your loved ones are too smart to get scammed? Think again. Here’s a note from one of our brilliant attorneys, Anne Duvoisin Fisher, sent to all of us at the firm: “My elderly father was the victim of a particularly nefarious phone scam, run by an international crime group through a Jamaican call center. They prey on the frail elderly and convince them they have won a bunch of money and a Mercedes or similar luxury car (in his case, $4.5 million and a Mercedes). Then, they arrange for you to pay them taxes, shipping, and handling in order to ‘retrieve’ the Mercedes they will supposedly deliver to your house. “Once an elderly person appears on their ‘vulnerable to scams’ list, as my Dad apparently has, then they are after you. If you don’t cough up the account numbers so they can clean out all your money electronically, they switch to threats of murder and violence against you and your family. I spent the entire weekend trying to block these criminals from harassing my Dad to no avail, including involving the local Sheriff’s Department, and had to ultimately change his phone number. “In this case, and in many cases, it starts with a fake Publisher’s Clearing House award, and they get you to send in a $20 check to collect your prize, and then they move forward. You can Google ‘Jamaican 876 scam’ for more details, but my point in sending this email is to alert you so

you can warn elderly relatives and clients NOT to answer calls from this area code and NOT to give any information to anyone who calls from this area code.” We’ve probably all heard about this type of scam and think we could never fall victim, but the scammers are very well trained and highly convincing. It doesn’t just happen to the elderly, but older folks are at greater risk because they often live alone, which means that they don’t have anyone immediately available to discuss the call with. They also often are lonely, and having a friendly voice on the phone is comforting. The scammers want you to think of them as a friend, and then they rob you blind. Plus, if your elderly loved one is having memory problems, he or she may forget that money was already sent, and forget to tell you about this new “friend” in Jamaica, Nigeria, or wherever. For scammers, this is a way of life. This is all they do, all day long. Some scammers will talk with the same individual for months, forming a relationship, creating a bond. Eventually, they ask for money—usually a small amount at first so the victim doesn’t get scared away. Once the hook is set, they could ask for the moon and their new “friend” would try to find a way to deliver it.

What to Do ********************************************************* The old adage is still the best: If it’s too good to be true, it’s not true. Here are some tips to pass along to people you care about: · You cannot win a contest or lottery you did not enter, and especially not internationally—it is illegal to play foreign lotteries from the United States. · Valid prizes never require you to pay for your prize in any way, including for “shipping and handling,” or for taxes. (Yes, you have to pay taxes on winnings, but it is part of your regular income tax form.) · Any requests for information about your bank account, credit card accounts, stocks, previous investments, pensions, or anything else related to finances should automatically make you suspicious.

38

·

Never send money to someone you don’t know.

· If you do get scammed, contact the authorities. Don’t try to recover you money on your own, or seek revenge— no matter how nice the person on the phone seems, these are criminals, and sometimes quite dangerous. · If you suspect you have been a victim of a scam, stop sending money and stop communicating with the scammer. You may think you want to talk more to gain closure for this terrible event, or to try to get your money back. Scammers don’t care whether you sent your last dime and are now on your way to being homeless…and they don’t care about your peace of mind. At best, they will hang up on you; at worst, they could make threats or try to scam you out of more money. Let it go. · If the scammer won’t stop calling, use a call-blocking service, or change your phone number.

hello my happy riders from the mind of big ed

Hello you happy people!! Its been one of those summers.. where I do more wrenching than riding. But, if you’re going to have fun on two wheels and love the sound of a Harley, then wrenching is a part of life! I think what kills me tho, is watching them custom ride shows that come on T.V. for all us gear heads. They show you how to add more horse power to an old relic like a Mopar or they drag some old rusty cage out of the junk yard and show you how to install some power house motor that in a million years your baby crap check will not ever afford! But while watching these shows...do you notice the same thing I do? Everything is clean!!! They have all the tools for the job and every body is happy and not a cuss word is said. Not to mention there is no blue tarp to keep the rain off your head but a climate controlled shop! This is bull crap!!! This is not reality!! And I end up flipping the channel! You want my attention Mr.T.V. Gear head show? Show me the real deal...the unedited, uncensored, busted knuckles and greasy rags hanging every where! I want to see a tool box with every draw opened! I want to see the half naked girlie poster stuck to the wall with two thumb tacks and a dart and a survival knife. I want to hear the mechanic tell me that he had a hell of a time with that piece of chit clutch assembly!! But after he used evey cheap a$$ crowbar and a hammer he has, he got that basturd out!

Not some smiley face on TV who hasn’t used a wrench yet but got an unseen helper getting it done for him during the commercials. I want to see a wrench get slung across the shop cause the wrench is a china made piece of sheet and it broke while in use.. This is real wrenching to me people.. A half a$$ made shop...no cement...no A/C unit...and assorted tools from American made to China crap. This is how us poor boy bikers do it! So...give me a hell yea!!! If you see it the way I do! Take it easy and I will be seeing you in the wind Behind Barz... Big Ed (aka 2Timer)
